The study examined factors that affect parental intention-to-vaccinate adolescent daughters with HPV vaccine in Mysore district, India. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1609 parents of adolescent girls attending schools in Mysore District between February 2010 and October 2011. A validated questionnaire was used to assess parental attitudes, beliefs related with HPV infection, cervical cancer, HPV vaccine and vaccination in general. Structural equation modeling was used to estimate parameters and assess whether a model based on the integrative behavior theory would fit the current data. More than two-thirds (78.0%) of parents would accept vaccinating their daughters with HPV vaccine. Intention to HPV vaccination significantly increased with increase in the perception of parents about the benefits (standardized regression coefficient (β) = 0.39) or sources of information about HPV vaccine (β = 0.24), but intention decreased significantly with an increase in the perception about barriers to HPV vaccination β = -0.44). The effect of beliefs about severity of HPV infection or cervical cancer (β = 0.20), and beliefs about benefits (β = 0.20) or barriers (β = -0.25) to vaccination in general on intention to HPV vaccination were significantly mediated by parental attitudes and source of information about the vaccine. Geographical location significantly moderated the awareness about HPV on beliefs about severity of HPV infection or cervical cancer (β = 0.33), and the effect of religion on norms related to HPV vaccination (β = 0.19). Fit of the model to the data was acceptable. This study identified modifiable parental attitudes about HPV vaccine and beliefs related with HPV infection, cervical cancer and vaccination, which predicted parental intention-to-vaccinate their daughters with HPV vaccine in India. Health education interventions tailored to counter parental negative attitudes and beliefs about HPV vaccine and vaccination in general would be important for the community to promote HPV vaccination., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Study Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine factors predicting human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine acceptability among parents of adolescent girls in a rural area in Mysore district, India., Design: Cross-sectional., Setting: Mysore, India., Participants: Parents of school-going adolescent girls., Interventions: Parents completed a validated self-administered questionnaire., Main Outcome Measures: Parental willingness to vaccinate their daughters with HPV vaccine., Results: Of the 831 parents who participated in this study, 664 (79.9%) were willing to vaccinate their daughter with HPV vaccine sometime soon if they were invited to receive it. Higher odds of parental willingness to vaccinate their daughters with HPV vaccine was observed among those who believed that HPV vaccine is safe (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.11; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-4.45); their daughter might become sexually active (aOR, 1.84; 95% CI, 1.08-3.13); they have support of other family members to vaccinate their daughter (aOR, 2.86; 95% CI, 1.47-5.57); and that HPV infection causes severe health problems (aOR, 1.64; 95% CI, 1.04-2.57). In contrast, parents who believed that there is low risk that their daughter will get cervical cancer (aOR, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.29-0.95); that the family will disapprove of getting their daughter vaccinated (aOR, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.22-0.76); that the injection might cause pain (aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.31-0.89), and were older-age parents (aOR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.93-0.99) had lower odds of willingness to vaccinate daughters with HPV vaccine., Conclusion: Acceptance of HPV vaccination for daughters was high among rural parents in Mysore, India. However, health education to reduce the belief that injection is painful and that daughters are at low risk to get cervical cancer is important to further improve parental HPV vaccine acceptability in Mysore. Aim: This study examined the determinants of attitudes and beliefs about human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, cervical cancer and HPV vaccine among parents of adolescent girls in Mysore, India., Methods: A random sample of 800 parents who had at least one adolescent-aged daughter attending school were recruited for a survey., Results: Most parents (n = 778; 97.3%) completed the survey. Compared to Hindus, Muslims were more likely to perceive that their daughters are susceptible to HPV infection (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 4.94; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.87, 8.49) or cervical cancer (aOR: 2.73; 95% CI: 1.55, 4.80). However, the likelihood of perceiving that daughters are susceptible to HPV infection (aOR: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.90, 0.98) or cervical cancer (aOR: 0.95; 95% CI: 0.92, 0.99) decreased with an increase in the age of the parents. Perceived severity of HPV infection (aOR: 0.36; 95% CI: 0.14, 0.97) and cervical cancer (aOR: 0.33; 95% CI: 0.15, 0.74) was lower among Muslims than Hindus. Muslims had lower odds of believing that HPV vaccine is safe (aOR: 0.47; 95% CI: 0.25, 0.89) or could protect against cervical cancer (aOR: 0.27; 95% CI: 0.16, 0.48), but were more likely to feel that HPV vaccination may cause girls to become more sexually active (aOR: 1.92; 95% CI: 1.09, 3.39). The odds of believing that HPV vaccine is effective increased with an increase in the age of the parents (aOR: 1.03; 95% CI: 1.003, 1.06)., Conclusion: Among Indian parents, age and religion of parents are associated with parental attitudes and beliefs about the threat of HPV and cervical cancer as well as the risks and benefits of HPV vaccine., (© 2018 Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.)

Study Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the parental attitudes and beliefs about human papillomavirus (HPV), cervical cancer, and HPV vaccine between urban and rural areas, India., Design: Cross-sectional., Setting: Mysore, India., Participants: Parents of school-going adolescent girls., Interventions: Parents completed a self-administered questionnaire., Main Outcome Measures: Attitudes and beliefs about HPV, cervical cancer, and HPV vaccine., Results: A total of 1609 parents from urban (n = 778) and rural (n = 831) areas participated in this study. Most of the parents had never heard about HPV (73.6%), did not know that their daughters could get an HPV infection (62.7%) or cervical cancer (64.1%) in the future, and believed that HPV vaccine was not effective (67.1%). Parents living in the urban area were more likely to believe that HPV infection (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.69; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.43-5.06) and cervical cancer (aOR, 2.68; 95% CI, 1.83-3.91) could cause serious health problems than those living in the rural area. The odds of agreeing that HPV vaccination will make girls sexually active was lower among urban than rural parents (aOR, 0.55; 95% CI, 0.33-0.94). There was no significant difference among parents in the urban and rural areas in their beliefs about susceptibility of their daughter to HPV infection or cervical cancer, and beliefs about the safety and ability of HPV vaccine to protect against cervical cancer., Conclusion: Rural parents might be reluctant to recommend behaviors that can help prevent HPV infection and cervical cancer such as HPV vaccination for their daughters., (Copyright © 2018 North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. Context: Some parents believe human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination increases the chance of risky sexual behaviors among adolescents. This review summarizes the evidence available on adolescent girls and women engaging in risky sexual activity following HPV vaccination., Evidence Acquisition: Systematic review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines was conducted in 2014 and updated in 2015. Literature was searched for articles published between 2004 and 2015 in MEDLINE, PsycInfo, CINAHL, Cochrane Database, Web of Science, and EMBASE without language limits. Studies were screened according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Methodologic quality of the included articles was assessed., Evidence Synthesis: The search resulted in 21 articles to be included in the review, with 527,475 participants. Included studies were conducted in 12 different countries using experimental and observational study designs. The review included data on girls aged as young as 11 years to women aged 40 years. Studies measured changes in sexual behaviors using a variety of outcomes, including age at sexual debut; risky sexual behaviors; use of condoms and contraception; and clinical indicators such as rates of sexually transmitted infections, HIV, and pregnancy terminations. Available data showed either no association between vaccination status and the outcomes of interest or a positive association between safer sexual behaviors, such as condom use and receipt of HPV vaccination. Methodologic quality of all but one study was moderate or weak., Conclusions: This review did not find sufficient evidence to support compensatory sexual risk behaviors following HPV vaccination among adolescent girls or women., (Copyright © 2016 American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Background: More than half of the over 18 million incompletely vaccinated children worldwide in 2011 lived in India (32%), Nigeria (14%) and Indonesia (7%). Overall immunization coverage in India was 61% in 2009. Few studies have explored the role of parental attitudes in children's vaccination., Objectives: To explore the correlates of completion of routine vaccination among children in Mysore City, India., Methods: A two-stage probability sample of 800 girls aged 11-15 years was selected from 12 schools in Mysore to take home questionnaires to be completed by their parents. The questionnaire elicited information on socio-demographic characteristics, attitudes and practices relevant to vaccination. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors independently associated with completion of routine vaccination., Results: Of the 797 (99.6%) parents who completed questionnaires, 29.9% reported completing all routine vaccinations for their children. Parents who had obtained optional vaccinations for their children (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 4.56; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.09-6.74), who believed in vaccines' effectiveness (2.50; 1.19-5.28) and who asked doctors or nurses about vaccination (2.07; 1.10-3.90) were significantly more likely to report complete vaccination, after controlling for all other factors. Belief that the disease was more protective than vaccination was independently associated with lower likelihood of vaccination series completion (0.71; 0.52-0.96). No other attitudinal or socio-demographic factors were associated with vaccine completion., Conclusion: Interest and belief in vaccine effectiveness are important facilitators motivating parents to obtain full vaccination for their children in India., (Copyright © 2014 King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences. Objective: Worldwide, 530,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 275,000 die annually. India bears the greatest burden of the disease with 132,000 cases and 74,000 deaths yearly. Widespread uptake of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine could reduce incidence and mortality by two-thirds. This study explored obstacles and facilitators of parental acceptability of HPV vaccine., Methods: In 2010, questionnaires were sent home with a random sample of 800 girls attending 12 schools in Mysore city to be completed by a parent. Data were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression with generalized estimating equation to account for potential clustering by school., Results: Of the 797 completed surveys; 71% reported willingness to accept HPV vaccine for their daughters. The adjusted odds of acceptance was higher among participants who received recommendation from their parents, perceived cervical cancer as a serious disease, believed that HPV vaccine was safe, or felt that vaccination was a good way to protect against cervical cancer. Parents who had concerns about vaccine side-effects or thought that it would cause pain had lower odds of acceptance., Conclusion: Future promotion of vaccine should emphasize safety of immunization and involve promotion to the extended family, so that they actively recommend immunization of young adolescent girls., (Copyright © 2014. Purpose: This qualitative study investigated physician intention-to-recommend the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to parents of adolescent girls in India. There are currently no data on attitudes to HPV vaccination among healthcare providers in India., Methods: Between June and August 2008, 20 semistructured qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted among physicians from a range of specialties and practice settings in Mysore District, India. Physicians were interviewed about their specialty and the types of patients they saw in their practice, attitudes toward recommending HPV vaccination to parents of adolescent girls, perceived subjective norms surrounding the promotion of vaccines in their work settings, and their perceptions regarding self-efficacy in recommending the HPV vaccine., Results: The study found that knowledge about HPV infection and its relationship to cervical cancer was low among physicians across specialties. While most physicians expressed positive attitudes toward vaccination in general, and HPV vaccination in particular, the overwhelming majority believed that few of their patients would react positively to a vaccine recommendation. Physicians were concerned about talking to parents about their adolescent daughters' reproductive lives. Certain specialties, particularly obstetrician/gynecologists, suggested that recommending immunization was not appropriate in their work setting., Conclusion: With the HPV vaccine recently being approved in India, there is a strong need to provide more education for physicians about the relationship of HPV infection and cervical cancer and the benefits of vaccinating adolescent girls to prevent cervical cancer in the future., (Copyright 2010 Society for Adolescent Medicine. This study investigates attitudes toward human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination among parents of adolescent girls in Mysore, India. Seven focus group discussions were held among parents of adolescent girls stratified by sex, religion and region to explore attitudes about cervical cancer and HPV vaccination. The study found that while parents have limited knowledge about HPV or cervical cancer, most are still highly accepting an HPV vaccine. In addition, high acceptability levels appear to reflect positive attitudes toward the government universal immunization program in general, rather than to the HPV vaccine in particular. The results highlight the need for additional education and health promotion regarding HPV and cervical cancer prevention in India.
