We present a framework of sequential action control (SAC) for stabilization of systems of partial differential equations which can be posed as abstract semilinear control problems in Hilbert spaces. We follow a late-lumping approach and show that the control action can be explicitly obtained from variational principles using adjoint information. Moreover, we analyse the closed-loop system obtained from the SAC feedback for the linear problem with quadratic stage costs. We apply this theory to a prototypical example of an unstable heat equation and provide numerical results as the verification and demonstration of the framework. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study problems of optimal boundary control with systems governed by linear hyperbolic partial differential equations. The objective function is quadratic and given by an integral over the finite time interval (0, T) that depends on the boundary traces of the solution. If the time horizon T is sufficiently large, the solution of the dynamic optimal boundary control problem can be approximated by the solution of a steady state optimization problem. We show that for T → ∞ the approximation error converges to zero in the sense of the norm in L2(0, 1) with the rate 1/T, if the time interval (0, T) is transformed to the fixed interval (0, 1). Moreover, we show that also for optimal boundary control problems with integer constraints for the controls the turnpike phenomenon occurs. In this case the steady state optimization problem also has the integer constraints. If T is sufficiently large, the integer part of each solution of the dynamic optimal boundary control problem with integer constraints is equal to the integer part of a solution of the static problem. We consider model adaptivity for gas flow in pipeline networks. For each instant in time and for each pipe in the network a model for the gas flow is to be selected from a hierarchy of models in order to maximize a performance index that balances model accuracy and computational cost for a simulation of the entire network. This combinatorial problem involving partial differential equations is posed as an optimal switching control problem for abstract semilinear evolutions. We provide a theoretical and numerical framework for solving this problem using a two stage gradient descent approach based on switching time and mode insertion gradients. The convergence analysis for methods solving partial differential equations constrained optimal control problems containing both discrete and continuous control decisions based on relaxation and rounding strategies is extended to the class of first order semilinear hyperbolic systems in one space dimension. The results are obtained by novel a priori estimates for the size of the relaxation gap based on the characteristic flow, fixed-point arguments, and particular regularity theory for such mixed-integer control problems. We consider networked transport systems defined on directed graphs: the dynamics on the edges correspond to solutions of transport equations with space dimension one. In addition to the graph setting, a major consideration is the introduction and propagation of discontinuities in the solutions when the system may discontinuously switch modes, naturally or as a hybrid control. This kind of switching has been extensively studied for ordinary differential equations, but not much so far for systems governed by partial differential equations. In particular, we give well-posedness results for switching as a control, both in finite horizon open loop operation and as feedback based on sensor measurements in the system. Mixed-integer optimal control problems require taking discrete and continuous control decisions for the optimization of a dynamical system. We consider dynamics governed by partial differential equations of evolution type and assess the problem by relaxation and rounding strategies. For this solution approach, we present a priori estimates for semilinear evolutions on Banach spaces concerning the optimality gap. The theoretical results show that the gap can be made arbitrary small. We demonstrate the numerical performance of the approach on benchmark problems of parabolic type motivated from thermal manufacturing and of hyperbolic type motivated from traffic flow control.
