Abstract: The authors present a measurement of the left-right cross-section asymmetry (ALR) for Z boson production by e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} collisions. The measurement includes the final data taken with the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC) during the period 1996--1998. Using a sample of 383,487 Z decays collected during the 1996-1998 runs they measure the pole-value of the asymmetry, A{sub LR}{sup 0}, to be 0.15056 {+-} 0.00239 which is equivalent to an effective weak mixing angle of sin{sup 2}Sigma{sub W}{sup eff} = 0.23107 {+-} 0.00030. The result for the complete 1992--1998 dataset comprising 537 thousand Z decays is sin{sup 2}Sigma{sub W}{sup eff} = 0.23097 {+-} 0.00027.

Abstract: We present final measurements of the Z boson-lepton coupling asymmetry parameters Ae, Amu, and Atau with the complete sample of polarized Z bosons collected by the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. From the left-right production and decay polar angle asymmetries in leptonic Z decays we measure Ae = 0.1544 +- 0.0060, Amu = 0.142 +- 0.015, and Atau = 0.136 +- 0.015. Combined with our left-right asymmetry measured from hadronic decays, we find Ae = 0.1516 +- 0.0021. Assuming lepton universality, we obtain a combined effective weak mixing angle of sin**2 theta^{eff}_W = 0.23098 +- 0.00026., 13 pages latex, including 1 figure. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett

Abstract: We have made the first direct symmetry tests in the decays of polarized Z0 bosons into fully identified bbg states, collected in the SLD experiment at SLAC. We searched for evidence of parity violation at the bbg vertex by studying the asymmetries in the b-quark polar- and azimuthal-angle distributions, and for evidence of T-odd, CP-even or CP-odd, final-state interactions by measuring angular correlations between the three-jet plane and the Z0 polarization. We found results consistent with standard model expectations and set 95% C. limits on anomalous contributions.

Abstract: The authors have made the first direct measurement of the parity-violating coupling of the Z{sup 0} boson to the strange quark, A{sub s}, using {approximately}550,000 e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} --> Z{sup 0} --> hadrons event produced with a polarized electron beam and recorded by the SLD experiment. Z{sup 0} s anti-s events were tagged by the absence of B or D hadrons and the presence in each hemisphere of a high-momentum K{sup {+-}} or K{sub s}{sup 0}. From the polar angle distributions of the strangeness-signed thrust axis, the authors obtained A{sub s} = 0.895{+-}0.066(stat.){+-}0.062(syst.). The analyzing power and u anti-u + d anti-d background were constrained using the data.

Abstract: The authors have developed a new technique for inclusive reconstruction of the energy of B hadrons. The excellent efficiency and resolution of this technique allow them to make the most precise determination of the b-quark fragmentation function, using e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} {r{underscore}arrow} Z{sup 0} decays recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC. The authors compared their measurement with the predictions of a number of fragmentation models. The authors excluded several of these models and measured the average scaled energy of weakly-decaying B hadrons to be (x{sub B}) = 0.714{+-}0.005(stat){+-}0.007(syst){+-}0.002 (model-dependence).

Abstract: The parity violation parameters Ab and Ac of the Zb anti-b and Zc anti-c couplings have been measured directly, using the polar angle dependence of the Z0-pole polarized cross sections. Bottom and charmed hadrons were tagged via semileptonic decays. Both the muon and electron identification algorithms take advantage of new multivariate techniques, incorporating for the first time information from the SLD Cerenkov Ring Imaging Detector. Based on the 1993-95 SLD sample of 150,000 Z0 decays produced with highly polarized electron beams, we measure: Ab = 0.910 ± 0.068(stat) ± 0.037(syst) Ac = 0.642 ± 0.110(stat) ± 0.063(syst).

Abstract: We present a direct measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A{sub b} in the Z{sup 0} to b anti-b coupling using a new technique to distinguish the b and anti-b quarks using charged kaons from B decays. The Z{sup 0} bosons are produced in e{sup +}e{sup -} collisions at the SLC with longitudinally polarized electrons. b anti-b events are selected using a secondary vertex mass tag and A{sub b} is determined from the left-right forward-backward asymmetry. From the 1994-1995 data sample, selected from 100,000 hadronic Z{sup 0} decays, we obtain A{sub b} = 0.855 {+-} 0. 088{sub stat} {+-} 0.102{sub sys}.

Abstract: We report a new measurement of Rb = Gamma(Z0->b-bbar) / Gamma(Z0->hadrons) using a double tag technique, where the b hemisphere selection is based on the reconstructed mass of the B hadron decay vertex. The measurement was performed using a sample of 130k hadronic Z0 events, collected with the SLD at the SLC. The method utilizes the 3-D vertexing abilities of the CCD pixel vertex detector and the small stable SLC beams to obtain a high b-tagging efficiency and purity. We obtain Rb=0.2142+/-0.0034(stat.)+/-0.0015(syst.)+/-0.0002(R_c)., 11 pages including 3 eps files

Abstract: This paper describes the design, construction, and initial operation of SLD's upgraded vertex detector which comprises 96 two-dimensional charge-coupled devices (CCDs) with a total of 307 Mpixel. Each pixel functions as an independent particle detecting element, providing space point measurements of charged particle tracks with a typical precision of 4 μm in each co-ordinate. The CCDs are arranged in three concentric cylinders just outside the beam-pipe which surrounds the e+e− collision point of the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC). The detector is a powerful tool for distinguishing displaced vertex tracks, produced by decay in flight of heavy flavour hadrons or tau leptons, from tracks produced at the primary event vertex. The requirements for this detector include a very low mass structure (to minimize multiple scattering) both for mechanical support and to provide signal paths for the CCDs; operation at low temperature with a high degree of mechanical stability; and high speed CCD readout, signal processing, and data sparsification. The lessons learned in achieving these goals should be useful for the construction of large arrays of CCDs or active pixel devices in the future in a number of areas of science and technology.

Abstract: We have measured the $B$ hadron energy distribution in ${Z}^{0}$ decays using a sample of semileptonic $B$ decays recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC. The energy of each tagged $B$ hadron was reconstructed using information from the lepton and a partially reconstructed charm-decay vertex. We compared the scaled energy distribution with several models of heavy quark fragmentation. The average scaled energy of primary $B$ hadrons was found to be $〈{x}_{{E}_{B}}〉=0.716\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.011(\mathrm{stat}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.022}^{+0.021}(\mathrm{syst})$.

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the tau neutrino helicity, hnu and the tau Michel parameters rho, eta, xi and the product delta xi. The analysis exploits the highly polarized SLC electron beam to extract these quantities directly from a measurement of the tau decay spectra, using the 1993-1995 SLD data sample of 4328 e+e- --> Z0 --> tau+tau- events. From the decays tau --> pi nu(tau) and tau --> rho nu(tau) we obtain a combined value hnu=-0.93+/-0.10+/-0.04. The leptonic decay channels yield combined values of rho=0.72+/-0.09+/-0.03, xi=1.05+/-0.35+/-0.04 and delta xi=0.88+/-0.27+/-0.04.

Abstract: During the past year, the SLD collaboration completed the construction and began the operation of a new vertex detector (VXD3) employing 307 million pixels. This detector, based on 96 CCDs of 13 cm/sup 2/ area each, is an upgrade of the original vertex detector of SLD (VXD2), made possible by advances in the technology of CCD detectors. Its improved impact parameter resolution, larger solid angle coverage and virtually error-free track linking will enhance the SLD measurement of the polarization-enhanced forward-backward asymmetry for b and c-quarks, increase the precision of the measurement of the b-fraction in hadronic Z decays, and open the possibility to observe B/sub s//sup 0/-mixing. Full separation of primary, secondary and tertiary vertices is accessible. A description of the mechanics and electronics of VXD3 are presented along with results from the first data.

Abstract: We present evidence for leading particle production in hadronic decays of the Z{sup 0} boson to light-flavor jets. A polarized electron beam was used to tag quark and antiquark jets, and a vertex detector was employed to reject heavy-flavor events. Charged hadrons were identified with a Cherenkov ring imaging detector. In the quark jets, more high-momentum p, L, K{sup -}, and {bar K}{sup *0} were observed than their antiparticles, and vice versa for antiquark jets, providing direct evidence that the higher-momentum particles in jets are more likely to carry the primary quark or antiquark from the Z{sup 0} decay, and that s{bar s} production is suppressed in fragmentation. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the left-right cross section asymmetry (ALR) for Z boson production by e+e- collisions. The measurement was performed at a center-of-mass energy of 91.28 GeV with the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC). The luminosity-weighted average polarization of the SLC electron beam was (77.23+-0.52)%. Using a sample of 93,644 Z decays, we measure the pole-value of the asymmetry, ALR0, to be 0.1512+-0.0042(stat.)+-0.0011(syst.) which is equivalent to an effective weak mixing angle of sin**2(theta_eff)=0.23100+-0.00054(stat.)+-0.00014(syst.).

Abstract: We have measured the distributions of the jet energies in {ital e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}q{bar q}g} events, and of the three orientation angles of the event plane, using hadronic {ital Z{sup 0}} decays collected in the SLD experiment at SLAC. We find that the data are well described by perturbative QCD incorporating vector gluons. Abstract: We present the first measurement of the left-right charge asymmetry ${A}_{Q}^{\mathrm{obs}}$ in hadronic $Z$ boson decays. This was performed at ${E}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}91.27\mathrm{GeV}$ with the SLD at the SLAC Linear Collider with a polarized electron beam. Using 89 838 events we obtain ${A}_{Q}^{\mathrm{obs}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.225\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.056\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.019$, which leads to a measurement of the electron left-right asymmetry parameter, ${A}_{e}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.162\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.041\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.014$, and ${sin}^{2}{\ensuremath{\theta}}_{W}^{\mathrm{eff}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.2297\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0052\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0018$. Also, the ${A}_{Q}^{\mathrm{obs}}$ measurement combined with the left-right cross section asymmetry determines ${A}_{e}$ independent of the value of the electron-beam polarization.

Abstract: Exploiting the manipulation of the SLAC Linear Collider electron-beam polarization, we present precise direct measurements of the parity-violation parameters A(c) and A(b) in the Z-boson-c-quark and Z-boson-b-quark coupling. Quark-antiquark discrimination is accomplished via a unique algorithm that takes advantage of the precise SLAC Large Detector charge coupled device vertex detector, employing the net charge of displaced vertices as well as the charge of kaons that emanate from those vertices. From the 1996-1998 sample of 400 000 Z decays, produced with an average beam polarization of 73.4%, we find A(c)=0.673+/-0.029(stat)+/-0.023(syst) and A(b)=0.919+/-0.018(stat)+/-0.017(syst).

Abstract: We present improved measurements of the differential production rates of stable charged particles in hadronic Z{sup 0} decays, and of charged pions, kaons and protons identified over a wide momentum range using the SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector. In addition to flavor-inclusive Z{sup 0} decays, measurements are made for Z{sup 0} decays into light (u, d, s), c and b primary flavors, selected using the upgraded Vertex Detector. Large differences between the flavors are observed that are qualitatively consistent with expectations based upon previously measured production and decay properties of heavy hadrons. These results are used to test the predictions of QCD in the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation, with the ansatz of Local Parton-Hadron Duality, and the predictions of three models of the hadronization process. The light-flavor results provide improved tests of these predictions, as they do not include the contribution of heavy-hadron production and decay; the heavy-flavor results provide complementary model tests. In addition we have compared hadron and antihadron production in light quark (as opposed to antiquark) jets. Differences are observed at high momentum for all three charged hadron species, providing direct probes of leading particle effects, and stringent constraints on models.

Abstract: The structure of three-jet e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} b{bar b}g events has been studied using hadronic Z{sup 0} decays recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC. Three-jet final states were selected and the CCD-based vertex detector was used to identify two of the jets as b or {bar b}; the remaining jet in each event was tagged as the gluon jet. Distributions of the gluon energy and polar angle with respect to the electron beam were measured over the full kinematic range, and used to test the predictions of perturbative QCD. We find that beyond-leading-order QCD calculations are needed to reproduce the features seen in the data. The energy distribution is sensitive to an anomalous b chromomagnetic moment {kappa} at the b{bar b}g vertex. We measured {kappa} to be consistent with zero and set 95% C.L. limits on its value, -0.06 < {kappa} < 0.04.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the b-quark inclusive fragmentation function in ${Z}^{0}$ decays using a novel kinematic B-hadron energy reconstruction technique. The measurement was performed using 350 000 hadronic ${Z}^{0}$ events recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC between 1997 and 1998. The small and stable SLC beam spot and the charge-coupled-device--based vertex detector were used to reconstruct B-decay vertices with high efficiency and purity, and to provide precise measurements of the kinematic quantities used in this technique. We measured the B energy with good efficiency and resolution over the full kinematic range. We compared the scaled B-hadron energy distribution with models of b-quark fragmentation and with several ad hoc functional forms. A number of models and functions are excluded by the data. The average scaled energy of weakly decaying B hadrons was measured to be $〈{x}_{b}〉=0.709\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.003(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.003(\mathrm{syst})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.002(\mathrm{model}).$

Abstract: The parity violation parameters A(b) and A(c) of the Zb(b) and Zc(c) couplings have been measured directly, using the polar angle dependence of the polarized cross sections at the Z(0) pole. Bottom and charmed hadrons were tagged via their semileptonic decays. Both the electron and muon analyses take advantage of new multivariate techniques to increase the analyzing power. Based on the 1993-1998 SLD sample of 550,000 Z(0) decays produced with highly polarized electron beams, we measure A(b) = 0.919+/-0.030(stat)+/-0.024(syst), and A(c) = 0.583+/-0.055(stat)+/-0.055(syst).

Abstract: We have measured gluon splitting into bottom quarks, g -> b bbar, in hadronic Z0 decays collected by SLD between 1996 and 1998. The analysis was performed by looking for secondary bottom production in 4-jet events of any primary flavor. 4-jet events were identified, and in each event a topological vertex-mass technique was applied to the two jets closest in angle in order to identify them as b or bbar jets. The upgraded CCD vertex detector gives very high B-tagging efficiency, especially for B hadrons with the low energies typical of this process. We measured the rate of g -> b bbar production per hadronic event, g_bb, to be (2.44+-0.59 (stat) +-0.34 (syst)) X10**-3., 21 pages, 11 figures; submitted to Physics Letters B

Abstract: We present a direct measurement of the parity-violation parameter A{sub c} in the coupling of the Z{sup 0} to c-quarks with the SLD detector. The measurement is based on a sample of 530k hadronic Z{sup 0} decays, produced with a mean electron-beam polarization of |P{sub e}| = 73%. The tagging of c-quark events is performed using two methods: the exclusive reconstruction of D*{sup +}, D{sup +}, and D{sup 0} mesons, and the soft-pions ({pi}{sub s}) produced in the decay of D*{sup +} {yields} D{sup 0}{pi}{sub s}{sup +}. The large background from D mesons produced in B hadron decays is separated efficiently from the signal using precision vertex information. The combination of these two methods yields A{sub c} = 0:688 {+-} 0:041.

Abstract: The structure of e+e- -> b bbar g events was studied using Z0 decays recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC. Three-jet final states were selected and the CCD-based vertex detector was used to identify two of the jets as b or bbar. Distributions of the gluon energy and polar angle were measured over the full kinematic range for the first time, and compared with perturbative QCD predictions. The energy distribution is potentially sensitive to an anomalous b chromomagnetic moment kappa. We measured kappa to be consistent with zero and set the first limits on its value, -0.17 < kappa < 0.11 at 95% c.l.

Abstract: We have made the first measurement of the double-inclusive B/Bbar energy distribution in e+e- annihilations, using a sample of 400,000 hadronic Z0 decay events recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC between 1996 and 1998. The small and stable SLC beam spot and the CCD-based vertex detector were used to reconstruct B/Bbar decay vertices with high efficiency and purity, and to provide measurements of the kinematic quantities used to calculate the B energies in this novel technique. We measured the B/Bbar energies with good efficiency and resolution over the full kinematic range. We measured moments of the scaled energies of the B and Bbar hadrons vs. the opening angle between them. By comparing these results with perturbative QCD predictions we tested the ansatz of factorisation in heavy-quark production.
