Abstract: Two-particle correlations in invariant mass are studied separately for like-sign and unlike-sign charged particles produced in deep inelastic positron-proton scattering in a new kinematical domain. The data were taken with the H1 detector at the HERA storage ring in 1994, in which 27.5 GeV positrons collided with 820 GeV protons at a centre of mass energy sqrt{s}=300 GeV. The observed enhancement of the like-sign correlations at low invariant masses is related to the dimensions of the hadronic source. The data are compared to different QCD models where the hadronization is performed with the string-fragmentation model. Results are presented for the first time separately for diffractive and non-diffractive scattering, in domains of four-momentum transfer, Bjorken-x, and hadronic center of mass energy, and in intervals of charged particle multiplicity. The observed source radii do not differ strongly from those measured in lower energy lepton-nucleon inelastic scattering, and e^+e^- annihilation., 36 pages, 10 Figures

Abstract: Results are presented on the photoproduction of isolated prompt photons, inclusively and associated with jets, in the gamma p center of mass energy range 142 < W < 266 GeV. The cross sections are measured for the transverse momentum range of the photons 5 < E_T^gamma < 10 GeV and for associated jets with E_T^jet > 4.5 GeV. They are measured differentially as a function of E_T^gamma, E_T^jet, the pseudorapidities eta^gamma and eta^jet and estimators of the momentum fractions x_gamma and x_p of the incident photon and proton carried by the constituents participating in the hard process. In order to further investigate the underlying dynamics, the angular correlation between the prompt photon and the jet in the transverse plane is studied. Predictions by perturbative QCD calculations in next to leading order are about 30% below the inclusive prompt photon data after corrections for hadronisation and multiple interactions, but are in reasonable agreement with the results for prompt photons associated with jets. Comparisons with the predictions of the event generators PYTHIA and HERWIG are also presented., 21 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: Jet production in charged and neutral current events in the kinematic range of Q^2 from 640 to 35000 GeV^2 is studied in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering at HERA. The measured rate of multi-jet events and distributions of jet polar angle, transverse energy, dijet mass, and other dijet variables are presented. Using parton densities derived from inclusive DIS cross sections, perturbative QCD calculations in NLO are found to give a consistent description of both the neutral and charged current dijet production. A direct, model independent comparison of the jet distributions in charged and neutral current events confirms that the QCD dynamics of the hadronic final state is independent of the underlying electroweak scattering process., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: Characteristics of hadron production in diffractive deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering are studied using data collected in 1994 by the H1 experiment at HERA. The following distributions are measured in the centre-of-mass frame of the photon dissociation system: the hadronic energy flow, the Feynman-x (x_F) variable for charged particles, the squared transverse momentum of charged particles (p_T^{*2}), and the mean p_T^{*2} as a function of x_F. These distributions are compared with results in the gamma^* p centre-of-mass frame from inclusive deep-inelastic scattering in the fixed-target experiment EMC, and also with the predictions of several Monte Carlo calculations. The data are consistent with a picture in which the partonic structure of the diffractive exchange is dominated at low Q^2 by hard gluons., 16 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett. B

Abstract: Low x deep-inelastic ep scattering data, taken in 1994 at the H1 detector at HERA, are analysed in the Breit frame of reference. The evolution of the peak and width of the current hemisphere fragmentation function is presented as a function of Q and compared with e+e- results at equivalent centre of mass energies. Differences between the average charged multiplicity and the multiplicity of e+e- annihilations at low energies are analysed. Invariant energy spectra are compared with MLLA predictions. Abstract: Deep inelastic e^+ scattering data, taken with the H1 detector at HERA, are used to study the event shape variables thrust, jet broadening and jet mass in the current hemisphere of the Breit frame over a large range of momentum transfers Q between 7 GeV and 100 GeV. The data are compared with results from e^+e^- experiments. Using second order QCD calculations and an approach to relate hadronisation effects to power corrections an analysis of the Q dependences of the means of the event shape parameters is presented, from which both the power corrections and the strong coupling constant are determined without any assumption on fragmentation models. The power corrections of all event shape variables investigated follow a 1/Q behaviour and can be described by a common parameter alpha_0., Comment: 19 pages, latex, 4 Figures

Abstract: A new measurement of the proton structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$ is reported for momentum transfers squared $Q^2$ between 1.5 GeV$^2$ and 5000 GeV$^2$ and for Bjorken $x$ between $3\cdot 10^{-5}$ and 0.32 using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1994. The data represent an increase in statistics by a factor of ten with respect to the analysis of the 1993 data. Substantial extension of the kinematic range towards low $Q^2$ and $x$ has been achieved using dedicated data samples and events with initial state photon radiation. The structure function is found to increase significantly with decreasing $x$, even in the lowest accessible $Q^2$ region. The data are well described by a Next to Leading Order QCD fit and the gluon density is extracted., Comment: 35 pages, latex, 12 Figures (3 bitmapped)

Abstract: We have measured the total normalized cross section R for the process e+e− → hadrons at centre-of-mass energies between 14.0 and 46.8 GeV based on an integrated luminosity of 60.3 pb−1. The data are well described by the standard SU(3)c⊗SU(2)L⊗U(1) model with the production of the five known quarks. No open production of a sixth quark with charge 2/3 or 1/3 occurs below a centre-of-mass energy of 46.6 or 46.3 GeV, respectively. A fitting procedure which takes the correlations between measurements into account was used to determine the electroweak mixing angle sin2θw and the strong coupling constant αs(S) in second-order QCD. We applied this procedure to the CELLO data and in addition included the data from other experiments at PETRA and PEP. Both fits give consistent results. The fit to the combined data yields αs(342 GeV2) = 0.165±0.030, and sin2θw = 0.236±0.020. Fixing sin2θw at the world average value of 0.23 yields αs(342GeV2) = 0.169±0.025.

Abstract: In this Letter, a measurement of inclusive muon production (p/sub u/>2 GeV/c) in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation into hadrons at center-of-mass energies from ..sqrt..s-bar=12 to 31.6 GeV is reported. The results agree with the expected semileptonic decays from charmed and bottom mesons.

Abstract: We present the first data on photon-photon annihilation into hadrons for CM energies > 1 GeV obtained with the detector PLUTO at the e+e− storage ring PETRA. Cross sections are extracted using an inelastic eγ scattering formalism. The results are compared to expectations from Regge-like models.

Abstract: Using the solenoidal magnetic detector PLUTO, we have measured the total cross section for e+e− annihilation into hadrons. Results are presented for center of mass energies between 3.6 and 4.8 GeV, and in the regions of the J ψ (3.1) and ψ(3.7) resonances. We also present results for the 2 prong cross section in the energy range 3.6 to 4.8 GeV.

Abstract: A study is presented of the process gamma p -->XY, where there is a large rapidity gap between the systems X and Y. Measurements are made of the differential cross section as a function of the invariant mass mx of the system produced at the photon vertex. Results are presented at centre of mass energies of W_gp = 187 GeV and W_gp = 231 GeV, both where the proton dominantly remains intact and, for the first time, where it dissociates. Both the centre of mass energy and the mx^2 dependence of HERA data and those from a fixed target experiment may simultaneously be described in a triple-Regge model. The low mass photon dissociation process is found to be dominated by diffraction, though a sizable subleading contribution is present at larger masses. The pomeron intercept is extracted and found to be alpha_pom(0) = 1.068 \pm 0.016 (stat.) \pm 0.022 (syst.) \pm 0.041 (model), in good agreement with values obtained from total and elastic hadronic and photoproduction cross sections. The diffractive contribution to the process gamma p --> Xp with mx^2 / W_gp^2 < 0.05 is measured to be 22.2 \pm 0.6 (stat.) \pm 2.6 (syst.) \pm 1.7 (model) % of the total gamma p cross section at W_gp = 187 GeV., 29 pages, latex, 6 Figures

Abstract: We present measurement of the π0γ*γ, ηγ*γ and η′γ*γ form factors. The π0-form factor is for the first time observed in the space-like region. The transition form factor of the η-meson is determined from its decay modes π+π-π0, π+π-γ and the neutral decay mode γγ. The decay of the η′ is observed in the decay channels ργ, ηπ+π- with η→γγ and in the four charged prong final state stemming from ηπ+π- with the η decaying into π+π-(π0/γ). All form factors agree well with a simple ρ-pole predicted by the vector meson dominance model and also with the QCD inspired Brodsky-Lepage model. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.
