Identifying forage species that are responsive in regions with marked water deficits is one of the greatest challenges for the sustainable development of agriculture. However, information is still lacking about the persistence response of those pastures and their abilities to produce new tissues at the times of water scarcity. We hypothesized that Brachiaria grass has a tillering capacity during water-stress periods. This study thus examined the tillering capacity and structural characteristics of four Brachiaria brizantha cultivars (Xaraés, Piatã, Marandu, and Paiaguás) and one Brachiaria decumbens cultivar (Basilisk) in the Brazilian semi-arid region during the dry season (September to March). The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with repeated measures over time in which five treatments were tested in four replicates. Tillering parameters, pasture production, and structural variables were evaluated. There was no interaction effect of cultivar × evaluation period on the tiller appearance (p= 0.1774), mortality (p= 0.1952) or survival (p= 0.4469) rates. The highest tiller appearance and mortality rates were observed in Marandu, while the highest survival rates were found in Marandu and Paiaguás. The index of tiller population stability was higher than or equal to 1.0 in all cultivars. Cultivar Basilisk showed the highest herbage mass yield (4448.0 kg DM ha-1), whereas Basilisk exhibited the highest yields of leaf (1845.9 kg DM ha-1), stem (1676.9 kg DM ha-1), and dead material (925.2 kg DM ha-1). The highest leaf:stem ratio (1.8) was found in Marandu. Cultivar Xaraés had the highest canopy (70.8 cm). The B. brizantha and B. decumbens cultivars evaluated in this study have the potential for cultivation in areas with marked water deficits, as is the case of the Brazilian semi-arid region. Cultivars Marandu, Basilisk, and Paiaguás exhibited the greatest tillering dynamics as well as the highest herbage-mass yield.

The low quality of tropical grasses in the dry season justifies the use of dietary supplements to meet the nutritional needs of sheep. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementation with high-protein feed on mutton sheep performance and yield in Massai grass pastures during the dry season. The treatments corresponded to four supplements, namely Leucaena leucocephala leaf hay, Gliricidia sepium leaf hay, soybean meal, and a treatment that received only multiple mixture (protein salt) ad libitum. The pasture was evaluated for canopy height, forage supply, and chemical composition of leaf blade, stem and dead material. Average daily gain, weight gain per area, and the stocking rate were also evaluated. There were four grazing cycles because the grazing method was rotational stocking with seven days of occupation and 35 days of rest. The interaction between supplements and grazing cycles was not significant, and no effects of the supplements were found for any of the variables. The highest forage and leaf blade offerings were observed in the first grazing cycle. The highest levels of crude protein and lower neutral detergent fibre and lignin of pasture components were observed in cycles 3 and 4. The highest average daily gains per animal and per area were observed in cycles 1 and 2. Protein supplementation of sheep in Massai grass pastures promotes satisfactory gains during the dry season, and Leucaena and Gliricidia hays can be used as protein sources instead of soybean meal. The objective was to evaluate the productive and structural characteristics of tropical grasses and the performance of sheep supplemented during the dry season. The treatments consisted of Marandu, Piata, Massai and Aruana cultivars managed under intermittent stocking with seven occupation days and 35 d of rest, with a variable stocking rate. The evaluated variables were the forage masses, the morphological components, the chemical composition of the pasture and sheep performance. The forage mass was similar among the cultivars, while the leaf blade mass and percentage were higher in the Massai cultivar. There were differences between the cultivars for the NDF, ADF, ADL and ash contents in the two grazing cycles. The lowest gains per animal and gain per area were observed in the Aruana grass pastures, while there were no differences for these variables among the other cultivars. Massai, Marandu and Piata cultivars can be used as a forage option for the dry period when associated with protein supplementation for sheep being raised for meat.

Studies on the rearing of ewe lambs in the Cerrado are scarce, so the objective was to evaluate the effects of protein-energy supplementation with 1.6 and 2.4% BW on the productive and reproductive performance of ewe lambs raised on pastures of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu. Twenty-four Texel ewe lambs, with a mean age of 5 months, were distributed in two treatments with provision of energy protein supplementation at levels of 1.6 and 2.4% BW, formulated for average daily gains of 150 and 200 g/day for ewe lambs weighing 20 kg, respectively. The experimental delineation adopted was the completely randomized design, with fifteen repetitions per treatment. The performance of the ewe lambs was evaluated by weight at the beginning and end of the breeding season (BS), average daily gain (ADG), and total weight gain (TWG). The count of fecal eggs was performed monthly. The evaluation of the ewe lambs reproductive organs took place at 8 months of age. The fertility of the ewe lambs was detected by transrectal ultrasonography at the end of the BS. The supplementation level of 2.4% BW was higher for ADG and TWG; however, it did not influence the other performance characteristics. There was no effect of supplementation on the reproductive characteristics, parasite load, and nutrients of the pasture. Pasture nutrients were influenced by the month of use. Supplementation levels were not effective to ensure the reproductive success of 8-month-old ewe lambs.

Plants of the genus Brachiaria, used in several countries as forage, are poisonous to some livestock species. Their toxic principle is protodioscin, and the main form of clinical presentation of the toxicosis is hepatogenous photosensitization. Here we compare protodioscin levels in B. decumbens and B. brizantha and review the literature on the concentrations and methodologies of collection and analysis of the toxic principle in Brachiaria spp. and the risk of contamination of pastures by more toxic species that may facilitate poisoning by plants of this genus in sheep. The experiment was conducted in pastures originally formed by B. brizantha, with many B. decumbens invasion points. The occurrence of cases of poisoning by Brachiaria spp. was the criterion for confirming pasture toxicity. The forage samples were collected at ten random points every 28 days through manual grazing simulation. The samples were analyzed for protodioscin by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with light scattering by evaporation (ELSD) after being dried and crushed. In the flock of 69 sheep, five poisoning cases occurred, three sheep died, and two recovered. The protodioscin levels found in the evaluated pastures ranged from 0.70 to 0.45%; higher levels appeared in B. decumbens (7.09%) compared to 1.04% in B. brizantha. We suggest that Brachiaria spp. should be avoided in pastures where sheep are grazing. RESUMO: Plantas do gênero Brachiaria, utilizadas em vários países como forragem, são tóxicas para várias espécies pecuárias. Seu princípio tóxico é a protodioscina, e a principal forma de apresentação clínica da toxicose é a fotossensibilização hepatógena. Este estudo teve como objetivo comparar os níveis de protodioscina em B. decumbens e B. brizantha e revisar a literatura sobre as concentrações e metodologias de coleta e análise do princípio tóxico em Brachiaria spp. e o risco de contaminação das pastagens por espécies mais tóxicas que podem facilitar a intoxicação por plantas desse gênero em ovinos. O experimento foi conduzido em pastagens originalmente formadas por B. brizantha, com diversos pontos de invasão por B. decumbens. Ocorrência de casos de intoxicação por Brachiaria spp. foi o critério para confirmação da toxicidade da pastagem. As amostras de forragem foram coletadas a cada 28 dias em dez pontos aleatórios por meio de simulação de pastejo manual. As amostras foram analisadas para protodioscina por cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência (HPLC) com dispersão de luz por evaporação (ELSD) após serem secadas e trituradas. No rebanho de 69 ovelhas, cinco desenvolveram a intoxicação, três morreram e duas se recuperaram. Os níveis de protodioscina encontrados nas pastagens avaliadas variaram de 0,70 a 0,45%; níveis mais elevados apareceram em B. decumbens (7,09%) em comparação com 1,04% em B. brizantha. Sugerimos que Brachiaria spp. deve ser evitada no pasto de ovelhas em pastejo.

Thirty-two Santa Inês male lambs, not castrated, were distributed in a randomized block design to evaluate the effects of different tropical forage cultivars (two Panicum maximum (Syn. Megathyrsus maximus): Aruana and Massai, and two Brachiaria brizantha (Syn. Urochloa brizantha) Marandu and Piatã) on carcass characteristics, quality, physical composition, and meat chemistry. The data were subjected to an analysis of variance, and the means compared using the Tukey test at 5% significance. There was no effect of cultivars on body weight, slaughter weight, and biometric measurements of the carcass. The Aruana and Piatã cultivars provided higher weights of hot and cold carcasses when compared to the Massai and the Marandu had no significant differences compared to the others. The animals kept in the pasture of the Aruana cultivar showed higher shank yields. However, forage cultivars did not affect the ribeye area or subcutaneous fat thickness. There was also no effect of cultivar on pH, temperature, cooking losses, cooling losses, and meat shear strength. The cultivars did not change the quality and composition of the meat. However, the Aruana, Piatã, and Marandu cultivars were the ones that provided higher carcass weights and ham yields.

Protodioscin poisoning of Brachiaria spp. has been a serious problem for lambs in grazing systems. The defoliation process can stimulate the appearance of new leaves and, the younger leaves have a lower concentration of protodioscin. Thus, it was aimed to assess the effect of different leaf offerings on the protodioscin content in forage and if protodioscin can interfere with the dry matter intake (DMI) and on metabolic and productive parameters of lambs. Twelve tester lambs (average weight 17.5 ± 3.48 kg) were divided into four groups of different levels of dry leafy matter (60, 75, 90, or 105 g/kg body weight). In addition to these, 33 regulator lambs were used as needed to adjust the leaf offerings of pasture. The animals were divided and kept in 12 paddocks, each with a tester lamb. The DMI was estimated using chromic oxide as an external marker. In vitro digestibility and degradation kinetics and ruminal, blood, and urinary parameters were measured in the forage sampled by the hand plucking method. The protodioscin concentration in forage was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. The DMI increased linearly as a result of the supply of leaves. However, the protodioscin content and its consumption showed a quadratic behavior. There was no effect of leaf supply on in vitro digestibility, in vitro degradation kinetics of forage, and on ruminal, blood, and urinary parameters of lambs. However, a negative correlation was observed between the DMI and the concentration of protodioscin at the highest level of leaf supply. This is due to the fact that in the most intense grazing, there is a stimulus for greater regrowth; therefore, there was an increase in the concentration of protodioscin in forages in older forages. Protodioscin poisoning was confirmed by urinary and blood parameters.

This study was undertaken to determine whether equations for prediction of dry matter intake (DMI) by meat sheep are valid for animals raised solely on tropical pastures and to propose a new equation to predict the DMI of sheep raised on tropical pastures. The DMI prediction from published equations was evaluated by regressing the predicted and observed values, using the F test, for the identity of the parameters (β0 = 0 and β1 = 1) of the regression of predicted on observed data. If the null hypothesis is not rejected, the tested equation accurately estimates DMI. The proposed equation was evaluated in the same way as the published equations. Correct pasture management associated with the adjustment of grazing intensity determines pasture persistence and the level of production per animal and per land area. The objective of this review was to examine the effect of grazing intensity in tropical pastures on the performance and productivity of beef cattle by a meta-analytical approach. The review followed a protocol developed and tested based on the PICOS strategy to formulate the guiding question: population (beef cattle), intervention (high grazing intensities), comparison (low grazing intensities), outcome (animal performance and productivity), and study design (experimental). Data were collected from papers published in the electronic databases of SCOPUS (Elsevier), Web of Science (Main collection), SpringerLink, Wiley Online Library, and Science Direct (Elsevier) by a single cross-reference search. The selected studies were considered relevant when they: (1) were primary research published in the format of a research article; (2) included grazing intensities as a management strategy; and (3) evaluated average daily gain (ADG, kg/animal per day), stocking rates (SR, animal unit (AU)/ha; AU = 450 kg), and weight gain per area (WGH, kg/ha). Thirteen manuscripts were selected due to their methodological strength for data extraction. The means under continuous stocking were 0.67 kg/animal per day for ADG, 518.12 kg/ha for WGH, and 4.19 AU/ha for SR. Under intermittent stocking, the means were 0.62 kg/animal per day for ADG, 980.18 kg/ha for WGH, and 5.10 AU/ha for SR. In tropical forages, the heights of 20 to 40 cm for pastures under continuous stocking and the defoliation intensities of 40 to 50% for those under intermittent stocking result in greater individual performance and animal productivity per land area.

There is little information about whether the increased secondary productivity observed in pastures fertilized with high nitrogen rates is attributable to fluctuations in the nutritional value or pasture structural characteristics, or both. This study aimed to identify a set of factors (structural and nutritional characteristics) that best explain the performance of beef steers grazing Mombasa grass pastures under residual effects of nitrogen fertilizer. The data were collected in Mombasa grass pastures fertilized with increasing rates of nitrogen (N) (100, 200 and 300 kg ha-1) from 2015 to 2017. In 2018, nitrogen fertilization was not used in order to characterize a residual effect of the nutrient. Variables related to pasture structural characteristics such as forage accumulation rate (FAR), canopy height, forage mass (FM) and morphological components were evaluated. The study also evaluated the nutritional value of leaf blades and the performance of beef steers based on average daily gain (ADG) and stocking rate. Principal component analysis was performed using the dataset available. Most of the variance (99.6%) was explained by only two principal components (PCs), of which 90.0% corresponded to PC1. The most influential parameters for PC1, in order of priority, were: FAR, FM, leaf blade and stem masses. These variables were positively associated with stocking rate. Conversely, ADG was not associated with any variable. ADG was the most relevant variable for the second PC; however, this PC explained less variance (9.6%). The structural characteristics of the pasture (FAR, FM and morphological components mass) better explain the fluctuations in the performance of cattle on pastures of Mombasa grass under residual effects of nitrogen fertilizer. The stocking rate is an efficient parameter to support decision-making in managed pastures with variable stocking.

Panicum maximum grasses are among the most used in Brazil because they have high forage production potential, nutritional value and adaptation to different climate conditions and in poor soils, which have been improved by the application of dolomitic limestone and nitrogen fertilizers and K2O, P2O5. The aim was to evaluate the tillering capacity and structural characteristics of six cultivars of Panicum maximum in the Brazilian semiarid region. The test was configured as a randomized block design with six treatments&mdash, the cultivars Aruana, Massai, Momba&ccedil, a, Tamani, Tanz&acirc, nia, and Zuri&mdash, and four replications. The studied variables included tiller population dynamics, tiller population density (TPD), appearance rate (ApR), mortality (MorB), tiller survival (SuvP), tiller stability index, height, light interception (LI), forage mass (FM), and morphological constituents. As to the population dynamics of tillers, seven generations were evaluated, and the largest number of tillers was observed in the first generation, regardless of the cultivar. Furthermore, the Massai cultivar demonstrated the highest TPD in all generations. Interaction between the cultivar and evaluation period was noted for ApR: the cultivars Tamani and Tanz&acirc, nia indicated higher ApR at 122 and 137 days after establishment. The cultivar (P = 0.380) and evaluation period (P = 0.4469) had no effect on SuvP, however, higher MorB was detected in the cultivars Aruana and Tamani compared to Momba&ccedil, a and Zuri, with intermediate values detected in the other cultivars. The highest FM was observed in the cultivars Massai, Momba&ccedil, a, and Tamani, as well as in the leaf blade of Massai and Momba&ccedil, a. The cultivars Massai, Momba&ccedil, nia, and Zuri have the potential to be cultivated in areas with marked water deficit and high temperatures, such as the Brazilian semiarid region. The cultivar Massai has a rapid recovery after a period of water scarcity. The cultivar Aruana is not recommended for use in the Brazilian semiarid region under rainfed conditions.

The objective was to evaluate the effect of different cultivars of Brachiaria brizantha on the dynamics and concentration of the larval stages of gastrointestinal nematodes in the soil and forage strata, as well as their effects on the performance of naturally infected lambs. Overall, 48 90-day-old lambs with an initial weight of 19.04 ± 0.96 kg were observed. Moreover, a randomised block factorial design with four cultivars of Brachiaria brizantha (Marandu, Xaraés, Piatã and Paiaguás grasses) under intermittent stocking (with a pre-grazing canopy height of 40 cm and post-grazing canopy height of 20 cm) for two grazing cycles was used. The following variables were analysed: faecal egg counting, faecal culture, mean corpuscular volume, FAMACHA© score, weight and body condition score, the recovery of larvae from pasture and soil samples, nutritional value and the production and structural components of forage. Lambs grazing Marandu grass demonstrated the highest level of nematode infection (P < 0.05). However, the nutritional value did not differ between cultivars. Marandu grass had the highest pasture density (P < 0.05), while Paiaguás grass had the highest percentage of dead material (P < 0.05). The various genera of gastrointestinal nematodes found in the faecal cultures, regardless of the cultivars, include Haemonchus (92.01%), Trichostrongylus (4.55%), Strongyloides (3.06%) and Oesophagostomum (0.37%). Lambs grazing Xaraés grass had the lowest body weight (P < 0.05). Furthermore, larvae concentrations were highest in Marandu and Paiaguás pastures; infective Haemonchus and Trichostrongylus larvae were recovered from pasture and soil samples. The different cultivars of Brachiaria brizantha produce diverse and relevant microclimatic conditions to contaminate soil, pastures and animals. Animal performance was not compromised despite the Marandu and Paiaguás cultivars having the highest levels of contamination and infection. Based on parasitological aspects, the Brachiaria brizantha cultivars Xaraés and Piatã are recommended for grass-based sheep production systems over the other cultivars since they contribute to the reduction of larval contamination and infection.

A ovinocultura se faz atuante em praticamente todos os continentes, a ampla difusão da espécie se deve principalmente a seu poder de adaptação. Devido aos fatores geoclimáticos, os países tropicais e subtropicais se destacam e se estabelecem no cenário agropecuário, e o Brasil não se torna exceção nesse mercado. O Brasil por possuir parte considerável do rebanho produzido em pasto, que se constitui em uma das formas econômicas e práticas de produzir e oferecer volumoso aos ruminantes, é um dos principais produtores de carne a um dos menores custos de produção. Os climas tropicais e subtropicais além de favorecer condições ideais para a produção e desenvolvimento dos setores agrícolas e pecuários como, por exemplo, o cultivo de pastagens e a criação de ruminantes, também proporciona condições favoráveis para o desenvolvimento e sobrevivência dos nematoides gastrintestinais, que por sua vez atuam negativamente no desempenho dos animais, em especial, os ovinos. Os nematoides gastrintestinais quando não controlados podem causar prejuízos de 30 a 40% no desempenho animal, principalmente o comprometendo no desenvolvimento de animais jovens e de matrizes em período reprodutivo que são as categorias mais sensíveis, e que estão intimamente ligados ao crescimento do plantel. Os principais nematoides que acometem os pequenos ruminantes e de maior importância econômica para e exploração de ovinos são: Haemonchus contortus e Trichostrongylus axei, ambos localizados no abomaso; Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Strongyloides papillousus, Cooperia sp. e Bunostomum trigonocephalum, no intestino delgado e Oesophagostomum columbianum, Trichuris ovis, T. globulosa e Skrjabinema sp., no intestino grosso. Características morfofisiológicas das plantas forrageiras como a estrutura foliar, hábito de crescimento e produção de massa verde, associados a fatores climáticos, podem ser fatores que influenciam a permanência dos diferentes estágios de vida livre dos nematoides gastrintestinais no ambiente, pastos que não proporcionam incidência de raios solares no estrato inferior das touceiras e solos, propiciam sombreamento e umidade podendo potencializar a reinfecção dos animais.

Average daily gain (ADG – kg animal-1 day-1), stocking rate (in animal units [AU] = 30 kg of body weight) and weight gain per area (kg ha-1 day-1) were measured. There was no cultivar effect (p > 0.05) on the structural characteristics of the pasture. The highest crude protein content in the leaf blade (11.8%) were found in cultivar Marandu. Average daily gain was higher in the animals that grazed on cultivar Marandu (0.08 kg animal-1 day-1) as compared with cultivars Xaraés (0.05 kg animal-1 day-1) and Piatã (0.04 kg animal-1 day-1), whereas the ewes that grazed on cultivar Paiaguás showed intermediate ADG values (0.06 kg animal-1 day-1). There was no difference between the cultivars for stocking rate (9.2 AU). Weight gain per area was highest in cultivar Marandu (0.33 kg ha-1 day-1) and lowest in cv. Piatã (0.16 kg ha-1 day-1). Brachiaria brizantha cultivars Piatã, Marandu, Paiaguás and Xaraés proved to be forage options for the post-weaning phase of ewes supplemented with concentrate in the dry season. In swards of tall, tufted, tropical grasses like Mombaça guinea grass (Panicum maximum (Jacq.)), post-grazing heights promote changes in sward structure, which influence animal performance. This study evaluated changes in sward structure in response to grazing management at two post-grazing heights (30 and 50 cm), associated ith 90 cm pre-grazing height. Each treatment was allocated to experimental unit (1.5 ha) in three replicated blocks. Pastures were evaluated pre- and post-grazing to estimate herbage mass, percentages of leaf (LP), stem (SP) and dead material (DP), and nutritive value (VN). Stocking rate was adjusted twice a week “using the put-and-take approach,” and animals were weighed every 28 days. Forage accumulation rate was greater for pasture managed at 30 cm (64.8 vs. 55.1 kg ha -1 day -1) than 50 cm. A greater number of days were required after grazing 30-cm residual pasture to achieve the pre-grazing target height, resulting in 25% decrease in number of grazing cycles compared with pastures managed at 50 cm. Regardless of post-grazing height targets, SP and DP decreased, whereas LP and NV increased from soil level to top of canopy. Stocking rate was greater in pastures managed to 30 cm than in those managed to 50 cm residual height (4.7 vs. 3.4 AU ha -1). This study aimed to evaluate the agronomic and structural characteristics of massai grass under grazing by sheep supplemented in the dry season. The treatments were supplements offered to sheep in massai grass pastures: multiple mixture, leucaena hay, gliricidia hay and soybean meal. The pastures were evaluated regarding: canopy height; forage accumulation and mass; accumulation, mass and percentage of morphological constituents; leaf:stem and green mass:dead material ratio; and pre- and post-grazing forage bulk density. Higher pre-grazing heights were observed (27.4 cm) in pasture occupied by animals supplemented with multiple mixture. No effects of supplement types for forage mass (average of 4426.6 kg ha−1 of dry matter) or of morphological constituents in pre-grazing were observed; however, a grazing cycle effect was observed for these variables, with decreased forage mass in the order of 20% between the first and fourth pasture cycle. Involvement of dead material in forage mass increased by 45 and 23% in the pre and post-grazing, respectively, from the first to the third grazing cycle. Using protein supplements in sheep's diet was not able to modify massai grass structure in the dry season. Massai grass is alternative forage for supplemented sheep production systems in pastures during the dry season, supporting grazing in 150 mm rainfall conditions for 6 months.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of pasture height at pre-grazing of Massai grass on the quality of available forage, forage intake and the performance of lambs raised for meat production. The treatments consisted of four pre-grazing canopy heights (35, 40, 45 and 50 cm). Pastures were managed by the intermittent stocking method and 32 sheep were used. Dry matter intake (DMI) was estimated by Lipe® indicator. Green forage allowance was not affected by pre-grazing heights. There was no effect of heights on the chemical composition of the stem or the leaf blades, except for crude protein content of leaf blades, which showed an inverse linear effect. Grazing time had a quadratic response in function of canopy height. The minimum point was at 42.6 cm, with 502.9 min/day. DMI increased linearly with increasing pasture height. Average daily weight gain (ADG) and stocking rate (SR) responded linearly to pre-grazing heights. Weight gain per hectare was not affected by height as a result of the compensation between SR and ADG. The increase from 35 to 50 cm in Massai grass canopy height reduces its nutritional value and individual performance and increases DMI of sheep intended for meat production. Grazing strategy is a key element in the determination of sward structure, herbage nutritive value and animal performance. We aimed to compare the herbage characteristics and performance of livestock in pastures of Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania managed, using two rotational stocking strategies, which provided either a fixed-length rest period (FRP) of 35 days in the spring and fall and 30 days in the summer, or a variable-length rest period (VRP), determined by the time required for the canopy to achieve 70 cm in height. The pastures were evaluated in the pregrazing condition for forage mass (FM); leaf (LP), stem (SP) and dead matter (DP) percentages; and nutritive value (NV). The animals were weighed every 28 days. Pastures managed with the FRPs exhibited greater FMs, SPs and DPs and lower LPs and NVs than those managed with the VRPs. The average daily livestock weight gain was greater during the spring and summer for the VRP than for the FRP pastures, resulting in an average animal weight gain per area of 990 and 860 kg ha?1 wet period?1 for the pastures managed with the VRPs and FRPs, respectively. Thus, pasture rest periods that were maintained after the sward reached 70 cm in height reduced the animal performance on Tanzania guinea grass. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of organic and mineral fertilizers on the structure and production of Panicum maximum cv. Massai forage. The experiment was conducted at the teaching farm of Instituto Federal de Educacao, Ciencia e Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Norte, Apodi Campus. The treatments evaluated were organic sources of nitrogen (wastes of pig, poultry and sheep farming) and a mineral source (urea), set at 150 kg N/ha. Forage production, morphological components, pasture height, light interception, leaf area index, and chlorophyll content were evaluated in samples obtained at intervals of 60 days. Canopy height was affected by the type of fertilizer applied and the greatest height was observed for pasture fertilized with urea (50.97 cm). The highest light interception by the canopy was observed for pastures receiving urea, but 95% light interception was not reached. The leaf area index was higher for pastures fertilized with urea compared to the other treatments and the values obtained for pastures receiving organic fertilizers were considered very low. Forage, leaf blade, stem and dead material mass was affected by the type of fertilizer and was higher for pastures receiving urea. The total chlorophyll content of leaf blades did not differ between the types of fertilizer evaluated. Forage structure or production in massai grass pastures is not affected by the type of animal manure used as nitrogen source. The efficiency of these organic fertilizers as a nitrogen source is lower than that of mineral fertilization. The animal manures evaluated can be used as nitrogen sources for massai grass pastures to reduce costs and environmental impacts.

This study examines the residual effect of nitrogen (N) doses on the carbon (C) and N stocks and on soil quality in an area cultivated with guinea grass. The pastures received three annual doses of N (100, 200 and 300 kg ha&minus, 1) from 2015 to 2017. In 2018, N fertilization was not applied so the residual effect of the nutrient could be characterized. Soil chemical attributes, C and N stocks, density and penetration resistance and root system characteristics were evaluated at different depths. No difference was observed between the N doses for soil density, which averaged 1.22 and 1.25 g cm&minus, 3 under and between the tussocks of guinea grass, respectively. Penetration resistance was affected by the N doses post-grazing, with the highest value (1.9 MPa) observed in pastures that received 300 kg ha&minus, 1 of N for three consecutive years. Root dry mass was not affected by the N doses. There was no effect of N doses on the average (19.7 mg ha&minus, 1) or total (134.3 mg ha&minus, 1) C stock in the soil. The total N stock did not change (11.3 mg ha&minus, 1) in response to the N doses, however, the average N stock was higher in the soil cultivated with guinea grass under the N dose of 300 kg ha&minus, 1 (1.7 mg ha&minus, 1). The N doses had little interference with the soil chemical and physical aspects. Regardless of the dose, high C and N stocks were observed in the soil cultivated with guinea grass. Therefore, when properly managed, intensive pasture-based animal production systems become important allies of the environment.

This study aimed to evaluate productive and structural parameters of Piatã and Marandu cultivars submitted to two grazing intensities. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with treatments in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement (Marandu and Piatã palisadegrass x 25 and 30 cm residual heights). Intermittent stocking grazing method was used. Non-defined breed sheep were used as defoliation agents. Interaction between cultivars and height was not significant for any of the variables. In pastures managed at 25 cm post-grazing, a greater regrowth period was observed. Forage mass was on average 27% higher in Marandu palisadegrass in relation to Piatã palisadegrass, regardless of height. Dead material accumulation was higher in the Marandu cultivar. There was no difference in mass between the cultivars and heights for leaf blade or stem before and after grazing. The highest population density of tillers was observed in pastures lowered to 25 cm post-grazing height, with no difference between cultivars. In the third generation the appearance of tillers was higher in pastures managed at 25 cm. Post-grazing heights of 25 and 30 cm do not change pasture structure in Piatã and Marandu cultivars in pre-grazing; however, it is possible to obtain a shorter regrowth period if managed at 30 cm. Objetivou-se avaliar parâmetros produtivos e estruturais das cultivares Piatã e Marandu submetidas a duas intensidades de pastejo. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, com os tratamentos em arranjo fatorial 2 x 2 (Marandu e Piatã x 25 e 30 cm de alturas de resíduo). O método de pastejo empregado foi o de lotação intermitente. Como agentes de desfolhação foram utilizados ovinos sem padrão racial definido. A interação entre cultivar e altura não foi significativa para nenhuma das variáveis. Nos pastos manejados a 25 cm de altura no pós-pastejo foi observado maior período de rebrotação. A massa de forragem foi em média, 27% maior no capim-Marandu em relação ao capim-piatã, independentemente da altura. O acúmulo de material morto foi maior na cultivar Marandu. Não houve diferença nas massas entre as cultivares e alturas para de lâmina foliar e colmo no pré e pós-pastejo. A maior densidade populacional de perfilhos foi observada em pastos rebaixados a 25 cm de altura pós-pastejo, sem diferença entre as cultivares. Na terceira geração o aparecimento de perfilhos foi superior nos pastos manejados a 25 cm. As alturas de pós-pastejo de 25 e 30 cm não modificam a estrutura dos pasto das cultivares de Piatã e Marandu no pré-pastejo, porém manejados a 30 cm é possível obter menor tempo de rebrotação.

This study aimed to examine the weaning age (60 and 90 days) of lambs supplemented while grazing on Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu pasture. Production performance, incidence of worm infections, intoxication, and production cost of lambs, beside that body condition and occurrence of single or twin births in the ewes were evaluated, by two consecutive years. There was no effect of year. Lambs weaned at 90 days consumed more supplement (281.0 g/day) than those weaned at 60 days (210.2 g/day) and showed a higher total weight gain (20.76 kg vs. 14.97 kg). Weaning age did not influence the occurrence of worm infections and intoxication by Urochloa spp. in the lambs, dam weight or body condition score (BCS). Ewes with single-born showed a better BCS (1.8 points) than those ewes had twin-born (1.4 points). The costs of supplementing the lambs and the effective operating cost were higher when the lambs were weaned at 90 days of age. There was no difference for intake, lamb performance between the weaning age groups. We recommend to wean lambs at 90 days in a creep feeding system.

The objective of this study was to evaluate animal performance in Mombaça guineagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq.) pastures under intermittent grazing associated with two post-grazing heights (30 and 50 cm) and a pre-grazing height of 90 cm. A completely randomised block experimental design was employed, with two treatments and three replicates. The pastures were evaluated pre- and post-grazing grazing, to determine the herbage mass, percentage of leaf, stem and dead material and nutritive value. The stocking rate (expressed in animal unit, AU = 450 kg liveweight) was adjusted twice a week, and the animals were weighed every 28 days. The average grazing frequencies were 33 and 40 days, respectively, for 50 cm and 30 cm of residue pastures to reach the pre-grazing target (90 cm). The forage accumulation rate and pre-grazing herbage mass were similar for pastures with post-grazing heights of 30 and 50 cm. However, 50 cm of residue in the pasture resulted in greater pre-grazing leaf percentage and nutritive value and a lower percentage of dead material than did 30 cm of residue, and, consequently, a greater herbage intake (2.6 and 2.0 kg of dry matter/100 kg liveweight, respectively). The stocking rate was greater in the pastures with 30 cm of residue (6.7 AU/ ha) than in those with 50 cm (5.1 AU/ha). However, the average daily gain was greater for the 50-cm (655 g/steer.day) than for the 30-cm (390 g/steer.day) post-grazing height, resulting in a greater animal production of 1070 versus 635 kg/ha, respectively. Thus, under intermittent grazing, Mombaça guineagrass should be managed using a 50-cm post-grazing height.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o valor nutritivo, a estrutura do dossel, a ingestão de forragem e a produção animal em pastos de capim-xaraés (Urochloa brizantha cv. Xaraés), manejados a 15, 30 e 45 cm de altura, sob lotação contínua, durante o período das águas. Mensalmente, foram realizadas amostragens para estimar as características dos pastos e determinar o peso dos animais. A produção de forragem decresceu com o aumento da intensidade de pastejo; no entanto, o pasto com 15 cm de altura apresentou o maior valor nutritivo. O consumo de matéria seca foi menor no pasto com 15 cm (1,89% peso vivo - PV) do que nos com 30 cm (2,26% PV) e 45 cm (2,34% PV). O ganho médio diário foi semelhante entre as diferentes alturas de manejo, em média, 730 g por novilho. As taxas de lotação foram menores para os pastos com 45 cm (2,0 UA ha-1) e 30 cm (2,5 UA ha-1) do que para o com 15 cm (3,5 UA ha-1). Houve maior ganho por área no pasto com 15 cm (678 kg ha-1) do que no com 45 cm (324 kg ha-1). The objective of this work was to evaluate the nutritive value, sward structure, herbage intake and animal performance on xaraés palisade grass (Urochloa brizantha cv. Xaraés) pastures with 15, 30 and 45 cm sward heights, under continuous stocking, during rainy season. Monthly, the pastures were sampled for estimating the sward characteristics and the animals were weighted. Forage production decreased with the increase of grazing intensity; however, the 15-cm sward height pasture showed the greatest nutritive value. Dry matter intake was lower in the 15-cm pasture (1.89% live weight - LW) than in the 30 cm (2.26% LW) and 45 cm (2.34% LW) pastures. The average daily gain was similar among the different sward heights, with 730 g per steer average. The stocking rates were lower for the 45 cm (2.0 AU ha-1) and 30 cm (2.5 AU ha-1) pastures than for the 15 cm (3.5 AU ha-1) pasture. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a produção animal e sua relação com as características dos pastos de Brachiaria brizantha cultivares Marandu, Xaraés e Piatã. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso, com três tratamentos e duas repetições. Os piquetes com 2 ha foram subdivididos em dois e submetidos ao pastejo alternado, com 28 dias de utilização e 28 dias de descanso. Foram utilizados três novilhos teste, por piquete, e novilhos reguladores para manter resíduos pós pastejo em torno de 3 Mg ha-1 de matéria seca. Mensalmente, os pastos foram avaliados para se estimar o valor nutritivo da forragem. Os animais foram pesados, e as taxas de lotação foram ajustadas duas vezes por semana. No pasto da cv. Xaraés, apesar do menor ganho médio diário (GMD) dos animais, a taxa de lotação foi maior, o que resultou em maior produtividade da cv. Xaraés, em comparação às cvs. Marandu e Piatã. No pasto da cv. Piatã, houve aumento do GMD, o que indica que as cvs. Xaraés e Piatã são novas alternativas para a diversificação dos pastos no Cerrado. Assim, a escolha da forragem deve se dar em razão da meta do sistema de produção, ou seja, a produção por animal ou por área. The objectives of this work were to evaluate animal production and its relationship with pasture characteristics of Brachiaria brizantha cultivars Marandu, Xaraés and Piatã. The experiment had a randomized complete block design, with three treatments and two replicates. Two-ha paddocks were divided into two and submitted to alternated grazing, with 28 days of grazing and 28 days of rest. Three tester steers were kept in each paddock; additional steers were placed in each paddock by the put and take technique, to assure post grazing residues of about 3 Mg ha-1 of dry matter. The pastures were sampled monthly to estimate the nutritive value of the forage. The animals were weighted, and the stocking rate was adjusted twice a week. Despite the lower average daily gain (ADG), in the cv. Xaraés pasture, the stocking rate was greater, which resulted in greater productivity, in comparison with cvs. Marandu and Piatã. The pasture with cv. Piatã had the highest ADG. These results indicate that cvs. Xaraés and Piatã are new alternatives for Cerrado pastures. The choice of the forage cultivar should fit the animal and production system targets.

The objectives were to: 1) evaluate the potential of the animal performance on Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça (mombaça guinea grass) pasture during dry season, and 2) determine the effects of protein or protein-energy supplementation on liveweight gain of steers grazing guinea grass pasture. A complete randomized block design was employed with three treatments and three replicates. Treatments included non-supplemented animals (NS) and animals supplemented with protein (PS) or protein-energy (PES), provided at 0.15% or 0.6% of body weight for 115 days, during dry period. We used 36 weaned calves from initial bodyweigh (LW) of 192 kg (±5 kg) on nine plots of mombaça guinea grass (1.25 ha each). Each month, animals were weighed and pastures sampled to estimate forage characteristics. The average daily gain (ADG) was greater (P = 0.0001) for cattle fed supplement than for cattle fed no supplement (250 g steer-1), and greater for protein-energy supplement (770 g steer-1) than for protein supplement (460 g steer-1). Mombaça guinea grass pastures with 45 cm height at the end of the wet season have enough forage mass for maintenance throughout the dry season about 1.4 AU ha-1 (AU = 450 kg BW), and reasonable nutritive value (average of 8,1% of crude protein and 55,3% of in vitro organic matter digestibility) to provide small gains. Considering the nutritive value of Mombaça guinea grass during the dry period, protein and energy supplementation is required for weaned calves to optimize their performance.

Studies of plant responses to defoliation are important to develop pasture management strategies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the population density of basal, aerial and reproductive tillers, tiller appearance and mortality rates, forage accumulation and sward structure in Marandu grass pastures under different grazing intensities. The experimental period was from January to June 2006, divided in three seasons: summer, autumn and winter. The pastures were continuously grazed using variable stocking rates. The grazing intensities corresponded to 15, 30 and 45 cm of sward height. The experiment was arranged in a complete randomized block design with three treatments and two replicates. The sward heights were measured twice a week. The response variables were: forage accumulation, forage mass and its morphological components; and population densities of basal (TPDb), aerial (TPDa) and reproductive (TPDr) tillers. The highest TPDb (P > 0.05) was recorded for the shortest sward pasture, and the highest TPDr (P 0.05) among the grazing intensities. Pasture with a sward height of 35 cm had 94% of sun light interception. The highest variations in forage accumulation and sward structure were more influenced by seasonal differences than by grazing intensities. Pastures of Marandu grass showed large flexibility in grazing management, which allowed it to be maintained at sward heights between 15 and 35 cm. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar a densidade populacional de perfilhos basilares, aéreos e reprodutivos, as taxas de aparecimento e de mortalidade de perfilhos, o acúmulo de forragem e a estrutura do dossel em pastos de capim-marandu, submetidos a três intensidades de pastejo. O período experimental foi de janeiro a junho de 2006, dividido em três estações do ano: verão, outono e inverno. O sistema de pastejo utilizado foi o de lotação contínua, com taxa de lotação variável. As intensidades de pastejo corresponderam a 15, 30 e 45 cm de altura do dossel. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados, com três tratamentos e duas repetições. As alturas do pasto foram monitoradas duas vezes por semana. As variáveis respostas foram: o acúmulo de forragem, a massa de forragem e seus componentes morfológicos e as densidades populacionais de perfilhos basilares (DPPb), aéreos (DPPa) e reprodutivos (DPPr). A DPPb foi maior (P0,05) entre as intensidades de pastejo. Pastos manejados com 35 cm de altura apresentaram 94% de interceptação da luz solar incidente. As maiores variações no acúmulo de forragem e na estrutura do dossel foram mais influenciadas pelas estações do ano do que pela intensidade de pastejo. O capim-marandu apresenta grande flexibilidade de manejo, podendo ser manejado, sob lotação contínua, com alturas entre 15 e 35 cm, sem prejuízo para a sua estrutura.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the supplementation with mineral salt (SALT), proteic and mineral salt (PMS) and energetic-proteic supplement (EPS), respectively, provided ad libitum, 0.2% and 0.8% of body weight (BW) on dry matter forage intake (DMFI), grazing time and performance of cattle during the dry season (June to August). The performance was evaluated in 48 steers with an average initial BW of 310 + 50 kg, distributed in 15 paddocks of Brachiaria decumbens , with the DMFI and grazing time evaluated in 18 steers. This study aimed to evaluate the use of wastewater from the cassava processing as organic fertilizer on pastures of Brachiaria brizantha cv. ‘Marandu’. The treatments were wastewater doses (0, 15, 30, 60 and 120 m3 ha-1), in a randomized block design with four replicates. The structural characteristics and morphological composition of the pastures were evaluated, from July 2013 to January 2014. The addition of wastewater promoted a positive linear increase in the three cuts for the canopy height, light interception and leaf area index. The maximum dry matter (DM) production was obtained with 120 m3 ha-1 of wastewater (2796 kg ha-1 of DM in the second cut). The mass of senescent material in the second and third cuts fitted to positive linear equation. The increase in wastewater doses promoted the reduction of undesirable plants. The recommended dose of residual water in pastures of ‘Marandu’ grass is 120 m3 ha-1, which promotes a higher mass of forage and lower of undesirable plants. RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar o uso de água residuária do processamento da mandioca como fertilizante orgânico em pastos de Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu. Os tratamentos utilizados foram doses de água residuária (0, 15, 30, 60 e 120 m3 ha-1), em blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. Foram avaliadas as características estruturais e a composição morfológica dos pastos, de julho de 2013 a janeiro de 2014. A adição de água residuária promoveu aumento linear positivo nos três cortes, para altura do dossel, interceptação de luz e índice de área foliar. A máxima produção de matéria seca (MS) foi obtida com 120 m3 ha-1 de água residuária (2796 kg ha-1 de MS no segundo corte). A massa de material senescente nos segundo e terceiro cortes se ajustaram à equação linear positiva. O aumento das lâminas da água residuária promoveu a diminuição de plantas indesejáveis. A dose de água residuária recomendada em pastos de capim-marandu é de 120 m3 ha-1, a qual promove maior massa de forragem e menor de plantas indesejáveis.
