Evidence of comparative benefits of long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics in Asian patients with schizophrenia has been inconsistent. This scoping review aimed to synthesize the current evidence in the past ten years and provide an overview of efficacy, safety, treatment adherence, patient attitudes, and healthcare resource utilization of LAI in this population. A systematic search was conducted with a pre-defined search strategy in six electronic databases including Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and PsycArticles. A total of 46 studies were included, including 15 cohort studies, 13 single-arm trials, 10 randomized controlled trials, four mirror-image studies, three cross-sectional studies, and one controlled clinical trial. Paliperidone palmitate once-monthly injection (27/46) and risperidone LAI (14/46) were the most frequently investigated LAIs. Compared with oral antipsychotic medications (OAMs), LAIs demonstrated a lower rate of relapse/hospitalization and comparable improvement in efficacy. Adverse events (AEs) were similar between LAIs and OAMs, although types and incidence varied. Significant reduction in the length of hospitalization and number of outpatient visits/inpatient admission was observed after initiation of LAIs. These findings suggest that LAI demonstrated comparable efficacy and safety among Asian populations with schizophrenia in comparison to OAMs. Better adherence and lower relapse were observed in patients receiving LAIs from published evidence. Background: Schizophrenia is a chronic, complex, and severe mental disorder and caregivers having knowledge about it can help improve patient adherence to treatment. This study aims to translate the Knowledge About Schizophrenia Test (KAST) into a Chinese Mandarin version and test it among caregivers to validate its reliability and reproducibility, as well as to determine its associated sociodemographic factors and clinical factors. Methods: The project surveyed 160 patients with schizophrenia and their caregivers at four community health facilities in Beijing, China, from January 2022 to February 2022. All patients and caregivers completed the sociodemographic questionnaire, and caregivers also completed the Chinese-version KAST, and 143 of these caregivers completed the Chinese-version KAST again 2–4 weeks later. Results: The mean (SD) of the caregiver score was 11.49 (± 3.13). After item analysis, there was acceptable internal consistency among the 17 items in the Chinese version (KR-20 coefficient 0.702). The intraclass correlation coefficient in the retest (0.686) was statistically significant. Gender, educational attainment, marital status, relationship with the patient, and occupational status were associated with the KAST score. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that the Chinese-version KAST is a reliable and reproducible instrument that can measure knowledge about schizophrenia and is valid to be applied in schizophrenia research. Objective: Nonadherence to antipsychotic medication is a major health concern. Identification of risk factors associated with nonadherence is a useful initial step toward designing an effective intervention. This study compared the characteristics of medication-adherent and -nonadherent outpatients with schizophrenia in a Chinese community setting.Methods: In a naturalistic, multicenter, and cross-sectional design, 601 outpatients with schizophrenia served by the National Continuing Management and Intervention Program for Psychoses (the "686 program") were surveyed from June 2013 to January 2014 in four Chinese cities. On the basis of self-reported behavior, the patients were divided into medication-adherent and -nonadherent groups. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify potential risk factors associated with nonadherence.Results: The analyses included 554 patients, 20% of whom were considered to be nonadherent. Compared with the adherent group, the nonadherent group had a longer period of untreated psychosis (odds ratio [OR]=1.09), lower body mass index (OR=.94), higher rate of rural residency (OR=2.01), and lower monthly household income per capita (OR=.94/100 renminbi) (p<.05 by hierarchical analysis). Other characteristics (age, gender, occupation, education, marital status, living with family, age at initial presentation of symptoms, duration of illness, and type of antipsychotic medication) did not differ significantly between the groups.Conclusions: Medication-adherent and -nonadherent groups differed significantly in some social and treatment characteristics.
