BACKGROUND: Since 2002 approximately 1,700 US military service members have experienced trauma related amputations from injuries incurred in Afhanistan and Iraq (Fisher, 2015). OBJECTIVE: This study explores the variables of resilience, individual characteristics, and employment status of a sample of these Veterans who served in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and sustained an amputation. METHODS: Veterans identified through the VA Corporate Data Warehouse (N = 165) completed a survey on their experiences following amputation. RESULTS: Results indicate that several variables were significantly related to resilience, to include employment status, pain status, and prosthetic use. Purpose: To examine the recent labor market indicators of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) versus non-STEM college graduates with disabilities. Method: The sample included bachelor of science (B.S.)/B.S.-level college graduates including 1,567,527 with a disability and 32,512,446 without a disability. Data were derived from the American Community Survey public use microdata files 2009–2011 inclusive. Three measures of labor market activity were used: labor force participation rate, unemployment ratio, and employment-to-population ratio. Results: Nonparametric tests of proportion with stringent alpha levels indicated that overall labor market participation was much lower for graduates with disabilities. Indicators improved somewhat for STEM graduates with disabilities perhaps because they persisted longer in their job search efforts. Within the sample of STEM graduates with disabilities, Whites experienced greater labor market participation than ethnic minorities. It was also found that supply-side interventions to improve STEM employment (i.e., government investment) have been markedly less effective than demand-side interventions (i.e., expanded recruitment of foreign STEM degree holders). Conclusion: Recent labor economics data and the expanded recruitment of foreign STEM degree holders bring into question whether or not a true STEM crisis exists today. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction The purpose of this study is to examine the possible interactions of predictor variables pertaining to perceived disability claims contained in a large governmental database. Specifically, it is a retrospective analysis of US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) data for the entire population of workplace discrimination claims based on the 'regarded as disabled' prong of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) definition of disability. Methods The study utilized records extracted from a 'master database' of over two million charges of workplace discrimination in the Integrated Mission System of the EEOC. This database includes all ADA-related discrimination allegations filed from July 26, 1992 through December 31, 2008. Chi squared automatic interaction detection (CHAID) was employed to analyze interaction effects of relevant variables, such as issue (grievance) and industry type. The research question addressed by CHAID is: What combination of factors are associated with merit outcomes for people making ADA EEOC allegations who are 'regarded as' having disabilities? Results The CHAID analysis shows how merit outcome is predicted by the interaction of relevant variables. Issue was found to be the most prominent variable in determining merit outcome, followed by industry type, but the picture is made more complex by qualifications regarding age and race data. Although discharge was the most frequent grievance among charging parties in the perceived disability group, its merit outcome was significantly less than that for the leading factor of hiring. This article documents the employment discrimination experienced by Americans with a record of disability but no current disability, utilizing the Integrated Mission System of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Decisions by the EEOC in favor of charging parties with historical disabilities disproportionately exceeded those in favor of charging parties with current disabilities. This finding suggests that discrimination against persons who have only a record of disability persists in the workplace, and that this additional aspect of the definition of the term 'disability' is viable. Data available in the Integrated Mission System (IMS) maintained by the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) were analyzed with respect to comparisons in the employment discrimination experiences of youth with epilepsy (N = 555) and youth in a general disability comparison group (i.e., GENDIS; N = 12,663). Both groups of youth were employed in industries associated with entry level positions such as retail trades, manufacturing, health care and social assistance, and accommodation and food services, and the majority of allegations for both groups pertained to post-hire issues, e.g., unlawful discharge and failure to provide reasonable accommodations. Youth with epilepsy were more likely to file allegations regarding unlawful discharge and were more likely to receive a merit rating of their allegations from the EEOC. Findings suggest a connection between poverty and likelihood of a diagnosis of epilepsy, the need to target certain industries for disability awareness training, the relationship between a seizure at work and termination for disability rather than cause, and the importance of worksite interventions addressing identification of barriers to productivity and accommodation planning.
