Background: Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is a broad-spectrum organophosphorus pesticide widely used to control tea geometrid (Ectropis oblique) and tea green leafhoppers (Empoasca pirisuga Matsumura) in tea trees. The major metabolite of CPF in water, plants, and animals is 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol, which is more toxic than CPF. However, the dissipation pattern of CPF in tea is unknown., Results: An optimized QuEChERS sample preparation method combined with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was applied to determine the residues of chlorpyrifos and its metabolite in tea during tea planting and green tea processing. During tea planting, the sum of chlorpyrifos and its metabolite dissipated rapidly with a half-life of 1.93 days for tea shoots. The residues of chlorpyrifos and its metabolite in made green tea were 96.89 and 35.88 μg kg -1 on the seventh day. The values for processing factors of chlorpyrifos and its metabolite were all less than 1, showing that each green tea manufacturing step was responsible for the reduction. The transfer rates of chlorpyrifos and its metabolite from made green tea to its infusion were 0.68-4.62% and 62.93-71.79%, respectively., Conclusion: The risk of chlorpyrifos was negligible to human health based on the hazard quotient, which was 7.4%. There are few studies for risk assessment of cartap and its metabolites, although cartap is easily transformed into metabolites which could induce higher toxicity. This study aimed to investigate the dissipation pattern of cartap and its metabolites during tea planting, manufacturing and brewing for evaluating the safety of cartap pesticide. Cartap metabolites were identified using Q-Exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometry. Half-lives of cartap in fresh tea leaves ranged from 0.49 to 0.59 days. Cartap decreased rapidly with time, and it was degraded into nereistoxin and cartap monothiol during tea production chain. Cartap monothiol residues dissipated rapidly by 98% in three days during tea planting. Nereistoxin had a longer residual period than cartap and it dominated the total residue in made tea after tea manufacturing. Transfer rates of nereistoxin during tea brewing ranged from 78.24% to 121.56%. The incompatibility of most organic solvents with acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition assay normally limits pesticide extraction efficiency in sample pretreatment, which might cause false negatives in real world sample assessment. Herein, a novel method has been developed for an improved AChE inhibition assay via organic solvent extraction combined spontaneous in situ solvent evaporation on microfluidic paper-based analytical devices. Enzyme pre-immobilization procedure was spared and AChE was added to the system after sampling step until a complete in-situ solvent evaporation process was performed on chip. IC 50 levels of the six investigated organophosphate and carbamate pesticides indicated a completely eliminated influence of solvents on AChE behavior with the new method. Most importantly, analytical performances were significantly improved in food sample measurements. Reduction in matrix effect was observed when acetonitrile was adopted for lettuce sample pretreatment instead of water. Studies on different pesticides suggested a remarkably decreased discrimination effect on recoveries from sample pretreatment with the new developed method. The recovery level for phoxim spiked head lettuce samples reached (107.5 ± 14.2) %, in comparison with that of (18.6 ± 1.4) % from water-based extraction. Spiked water and apple juice samples with carbaryl concentration of as low as 0.02 mg L -1 were also successfully recognized with the present method by visual detection. This study aimed to determine the residues of fipronil, metabolites, and enantiomers in tea (Camellia sinensis) during tea planting and green tea manufacture. An AD-RH chiral column was used to separate the fipronil enantiomers. During tea planting, the half-lives of the sum of fipronil and metabolites were similar to those of fipronil, which were 2.37 and 3.88 days for tea shoots and mature leaves, respectively. The residues of fipronil and its metabolites increased 2.3-3.6-fold during green tea manufacture. The values for the processing factors of fipronil and metabolites ranged from 1.0 to 2.1. A slightly significant enantioselectivity of (R)- and (S)-fipronil was observed during tea planting and green tea manufacturing. The residue pattern indicated that fipronil should not be applied in tea gardens due to its long persistence. The maximum residual limits of fipronil and metabolites at 2 μg kg -1 were considered optimal.

Amine-functional reduced graphene oxide (amine-rGO) with different carbon chain length amino groups were successfully synthesized. The graphene oxides (GO) reduction as well as amino grafting were achieved simultaneously in one step via a facile solvothermal synthetic strategy. The obtained materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to confirm the modification of GO with different amino groups. The adsorption performance of catechins and caffeine from tea acetonitrile extracts on different amine functional rGO samples were evaluated. It was found that tributylamine-functional rGO (tri-BuA-rGO) exhibited the highest adsorption ability for catechins and caffeine compared to GO and other amino group functional rGO samples. It was worth to note that the adsorption capacity of catechins on tri-BuA-rGO was 11 times higher than that of GO (203.7mgg -1 vs 18.7mgg -1 ). Electrostatic interaction, π-π interaction and surface hydrophilic-hydrophobic properties of tri-BuA-rGO played important roles in the adsorption of catechins as well as caffeine. The gravimetric analysis confirmed that the tri-BuA-rGO achieved the highest efficient cleanup preformance compared with traditional dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE) adsorbents like primary-secondary amine (PSA), graphitized carbon black (GCB) or C18. A multi-pesticides analysis method based on tri-BuA-rGO is validated on 33 representative pesticides in tea using gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry or high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. The analysis method gave a high coefficient of determination (r 2 >0.99) for each pesticide and satisfactory recoveries in a range of 72.1-120.5%. Residues of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in green tea and tea infusion were determined using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to study their dissipation pattern during green tea processing and infusion. Concentration and evaporation of PAHs during tea processing were the key factors affecting PAH residue content in product intermediates and in green tea. PAH residues in tea leaves increased by 2.4-3.1 times during the manufacture of green tea using the electric heating model. After correction to dry weight, PAH residue concentrations decreased by 33.5-48.4% during green tea processing because of PAH evaporation. Moreover, spreading and drying reduced PAH concentrations. The transfer rates of PAH residues from green tea to infusion varied from 4.6% to 7.2%, and PAH leaching was higher in the first infusion than in the second infusion. These results are useful for assessing exposure to PAHs from green tea and in formulating controls for the maximum residue level of PAHs in green tea.

Pesticide residues could be transferred from tea into its infusion and by-products, and subsequently consumed by humans. Extra extraction conditions may induce more pesticide leaching into the infusion and by-products of tea and cause greater damage to humans. The aim of this study is to evaluate the infusion of multiple pesticides from green tea into hot water via pressurized liquid extraction. The results showed that pesticides in spiked samples generally have higher leaching (0.8-45.0%) than those in the positive samples. There was a marked rise of transfer rates when water solubility increased from 20mgL(-1) to 450mgL(-1) and LogKow decreased from 6 to 4. All pesticides had more leaching into hot water using pressurized liquid extraction than traditional tea brewing. The residues of 16 phthalate esters (PAEs) in fresh tea leaves and made tea were determined via gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to study their distribution and degradation characteristics during tea planting and processing. Five PAEs were detected in all fresh tea leaves, and higher concentrations were detected in mature leaves. The distribution of PAEs in fresh tea leaves ranged from 69.7 to 2244.0 μg/kg. The degradative percentages of ∑ 5 PAEs during green tea manufacturing ranged from 61 to 63% and were significantly influenced by the drying process. The transfer rates of PAEs-D 4 ranged from 5.2 to 100.6%. PAEs with a high water solubility showed the highest transfer coefficient in the range of 91.8-100.6%, whereas PAEs with a high log K ow showed a low leaching efficiency below 11.9%. These results benefit the risk evaluation and establishment of a maximum residue limit for PAEs in tea.

Determining the transfer rate of pesticides during tea brewing is important to identify the potential exposure risks from pesticide residues in tea. In this study, the transfer rates of 19 typical pesticides from tea to brewing were investigated using gas chromatography tandem mass and ultraperformance liquid chromatography tandem mass. The leaching rates of five pesticides (isocarbophos, triazophos, fenvalerate, buprofezin, and pyridaben) during tea brewing were first reported. The pesticides exhibited different transfer rates; however, this result was not related to residual concentrations and tea types. Pesticides with low octanol-water partition coefficients (Logkow) and high water solubility demonstrated high transfer rates. The transfer rates of pesticides with water solubility > 29 mg L(-1) (or <15 mg L(-1)) were >25% (or <10%), and those of pesticides with LogKow < 1.52 (or >2.48) were >65% (or <35%). This result indicates that water solubility at approximately 20 mg L(-1) and LogKow at approximately 2.0 could be the demarcation lines of transfer rate. The results of this study can be used as a guide in the application of pesticides to tea trees and establishment of maximum residue limits of pesticides in tea to reduce pesticide exposure in humans.

A number of 100 Pu-erh tea samples from the 2013 harvest in Yunnan Province (China) were analysed for 74 pesticides. A total of 11 pesticides were detected. At least one pesticide was detected in 56% of the samples. None of these samples contained the 74 monitored pesticides at concentrations above the Chinese maximum residual levels. Imidacloprid, bifenthrin and acetamiprid were most frequently found, with percentages of 53%, 46% and 31%, respectively. These were also the top three pesticides with maximum concentrations of 140, 246 and 672 μg kg⁻¹, respectively. Residual levels of the monitored pesticides showed no significant correlation with the production time or area of Pu-erh tea. Whereas a high incidence of pesticide residues was detected in Pu-erh tea, the contamination levels observed do not pose any serious health risks.

A multi-residue method for the determination of 88 pesticides in tea using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was developed. The target compounds were extracted with acetonitrile by accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), and the extracts were cleaned up by solid phase extraction (SPE) with a Carbon/NH2 cartridge and eluted with acetonitrile-toluene (3:1, v/v) before the identification and quantification of the residues by GC-MS/MS. Performance characteristics, such as accuracy, precision, linear range, limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs), for each pesticide were determined. At low concentration level spiked (6.4 microg/kg), the average recoveries were in the range of 70%-100% for 87.5% analytes and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were lower than 15% for 87.5% analytes. The quantification of analytes was carried out using the most sensitive transition for every compound and by matrix-matched standards calibration. The LOQs (S/N = 10) were less than 10 microg/kg for 86.4% analytes. The method is sensitive, accurate, reliable and suitable for the simultaneous determination of multi-residue pesticides in green tea, Woolong tea, black tea and Puer tea.
