SmithKline Beecham Corp. has changed its $1.6-bil defined-benefit pension plan to a cash balance plan, which is a system that can be more expensive for a company, but can attract employees more effectively. Major pharmaceutical company earnings were mixed for 1st qtr 1993. For example, Merck and Co had 1st qtr 1993 sales of $2.38 billion and earnings of $613.8 million. However, American Cyanamid Inc posted a net loss of $433.7 million due to a one-time charge for accounting standards changes. SmithKline Beecham (SB) announced that it's financial performance for FY 1992 was extremely satisfactory. SB reported that it achieved net earnings of 755 million pounds sterling, or 27.3 pence per share, out of a total gross revenue of 5.2 billion pounds sterling.
