Detailed structural and magnetic investigations have been performed on two equally Fe-doped MnCoGe alloys of nominal compositions Mn 0.875 Fe 0.125 CoGe and MnCo 0.875 Fe 0.125 Ge. The presence of martensitic phase transition (MPT) in both alloys is clear from the temperature variation of structural and magnetic properties. The nature of MPT is found to be complete in the Mn site Fe-doped alloy. On the other hand, a partial nature of the MPT is observed for the Co site Fe-doped alloy. The application of external hydrostatic pressure hardly affects the magnetic and structural transition temperatures. Both alloys show a significant amount of the magnetocaloric effect in ambient as well as in high pressure situation around their magnetic and structural transition regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have studied the structure of a monolayer of C21H43OH on water, in the region near close packing, by grazing incidence in-plane x-ray diffraction. For all temperatures studied the isotherms in the πa plane show a kink, signaling a phase transition. Along an isotherm, and for pressures above the kink, we observe that the transverse structure factor has one peak which has constant position, width, and intensity; below the kink the diffraction peak shifts to smaller scattering vector (larger separation) and the amplitude decays as the surface pressure decreases, but the width of the peak remains constant. We rationalize these observations in terms of the influence on the transverse structure factor of gauche configurations in the amphiphile tails, with the kink representing the point at which the last of the gauche configurations is squeezed out of the chain. Along an isobar which is at higher pressure than the kink pressures of all isotherms crossed, the transverse structure factor has a single peak above a transition temperature and two peaks below that temperature; for π=30 dyn/cm the transition temperature is in the range 16.3

A three dimensional, transient model is developed for studying heat transfer, fluid flow and mass transfer for the case of a single-pass laser surface alloying process. The numerical study is performed in a co-ordinate system fixed to the laser which moves with a constant scanning speed. The coupled momentum, energy and species conservation equations are solved using a finite volume technique. Phase change processes are modelled using a fixed-grid enthalpy-porosity technique, which is capable of predicting the continuously evolving solid-liquid interface. The three-dimensional model is able to predict the species concentration distribution inside the molten pool during alloying, as well as in the entire cross section of the solidified alloy. Corresponding experimental results show a good qualitative agreement with the numerical predictions with regard to pool shape and final composition distribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lifetime measurements have been carried out for high spin states in 123Cs and 124Ba using the Doppler shift attenuation method. The transition quadrupole moments Q, measured in the present work show a loss of collectivity after the alignment of neutron h11/2 orbitals. The experimental results are compared with the existing theoretical calculations within the framework of the cranked shell model. The results are consistent with the evolution of triaxial shape due to the alignment of vh11/2 orbitals. However, larger deformation parameters β2 have been measured compared with the values predicted by the model calculations in both the nuclei. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with phase change material (PCM), used in conjunction with thermal conductivity enhancer (TCE), as a means of thermal management of electronic systems. Eicosane is used as PCM, while aluminium pin or plate fins are used as TCE. The test section considered in all cases is a 42x42 mm² base with a TCE height of 25 mm. An electrical heater at the heat sink base is used to simulate the heat generation in electronic chips. Various volumetric fractions of TCE in the conglomerate of PCM and TCE are considered. The case with 8% TCE volume fraction was found to have the best thermal performance. With this volume fraction of TCE, the effects of fin dimension and fin shape are also investigated. It is found that a large number of small cross-sectional area fins is preferable. A numerical model is also developed to enable an interpretation of experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
