A strategy for oxidative kinetic resolution of racemic indolines was developed, employing salicylaldehyde derivative as the pre-resolving reagent and chiral phosphoric acid as the catalyst. Described herein are differences in behavior between a Hantzsch ester and a benzothiazoline as hydrogen donors in the chiral phosphoric acid catalyzed asymmetric reductive amination of ketones with p-anisidine. The asymmetric reductive amination of ketones with a Hantzsch ester as a hydrogen donor provided the corresponding chiral amines exclusively, regardless of the structures of the ketones, whereas a similar transformation with a benzothiazoline provided chiral amines and p-methoxyphenyl-protected primary amines in variable yields, depending on the structures of both the ketones and benzothiazolines. Because a benzothiazoline has an N,S-acetal moiety that is vulnerable to p-anisidine, the primary amine can be formed through transimination of the benzothiazoline with p-anisidine followed by reduction of the resulting aldimine with remaining benzothiazoline. A chiral Brønsted acid catalyzed dehydrogenative kinetic resolution of tetrahydroquinoline derivatives, which are representative of cyclic secondary amines, based on their hydrogen transfer to aromatic imines was efficiently achieved with high enantioselectivities. Abstract: 1,3‐Dipolar cycloadditions (1,3‐DC) between imino esters (as precursors of N‐metallated azomethine ylides) and π‐deficient alkenes are promoted by cooperative asymmetric Lewis acid/Brønsted base catalysis. The components of these catalytic pairs are silver salts derived from enantiopure commercially available BINOL‐based phosphoric acids and Cinchona alkaloids. Chiral phosphoric silver(I) salts promote HOMO raising of in situ formed 1,3‐dipoles, whereas protonated cinchona alkaloids generate a LUMO lowering for the dipolarophiles resulting in a global acceleration of the 1,3‐DC. The best results were obtained with BINOL‐derived silver phosphate and hydrocinchonine. Matching between both cooperative metallo‐ and organocatalyst results in an enhanced enantiomeric excess, superior to that reached by both separate components. NOESY experiments and DFT calculations are compatible with a non‐covalent interaction (hydrogen bond) between both catalysts, which results in close contacts and mutually coupled chiral environments. Mannich-type reaction of ketene silyl acetals with aldimines proceeded catalytically by means of a phosphoric acid diester, derived from (R)-BINOL, as a chiral Brønsted acid to afford β-amino esters with good diastereoselectivity in favor of the syn isomer and high enantioselectivity (up to 96% ee). The highest enantioselectivity was achieved by the phosphoric acid diester bearing 4-nitrophenyl groups on the 3,3′-positions of BINOL. The N-2-hydroxyphenyl group of aldimine was found to be essential for the present Mannich-type reaction. In combination with these experimental investigations, two possible monocoordination and dicoordination pathways were explored using density functional theory calculations (BHandHLYP/6-31G*). The present reaction proceeds via a dicoordination pathway through the zwitterionic and nine-membered cyclic transition state (TS) consisting of the aldimine and the phosphoric acid. The re-facial selectivity was also well-rationalized theoretically. The nine-membered cyclic structure and aromatic stacking interaction between the 4-nitrophenyl group and N-aryl group would fix the geometry of aldimine on the transition state, and the si-facial attacking TS is less favored by the steric hindrance of the 3,3′-aryl substituents.
