The photochemistry of metal-organic compounds in solution is determined by both intra- and inter-molecular relaxation processes after photoexcitation. Understanding its prime mechanisms is crucial to optimise the reactive paths and control their outcome. Here we investigate the photoinduced dynamics of aqueous ferrioxalate ([Fe-III(C2O4)(3)](3-)) upon 263 nm excitation using ultrafast liquid phase photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). The initial step is found to be a ligand-to-metal electron transfer, occuring on a time scale faster than our time resolution (less than or similar to 30 fs). Furthermore, we observe that about 25% of the initially formed ferrous species population are lost in similar to 2 ps. Continuous photolysis experiments and transient absorption spectroscopy were performed in combination with other techniques including HRTEM, XPS, Raman, TGA, and ESR spectroscopy, to investigate the role of residual metals and amorphous carbon on the photochemical process taking place after 350–355 nm light irradiation of as obtained commercial multi-walled carbon nanotubes, denoted as pCNT. The results indicate that 350–355 nm photolysis of pCNT leads to the oxidation of surface oxygen-containing groups and defects which in turn are eliminated leading to more graphitic –like multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). Residual metal catalysts and oxygen containing amorphous carbon and oxidized C-functionalities of MWCNT play an important role in the generation of MWCNT photoinduced charge-separated states. The process of 350 nm excitation of pCNT leads to exciton formation followed by hole transfer to metal oxides and further oxidation of C-O functionalities. A plausible mechanism explaining the elimination of oxidized groups attached to pCNT graphene walls and amorphous carbon and leading to more graphite-like CNTs is discussed. Different perylene-3,4:9,10-bis(dicarboximide) (abbreviated as perylenebisimides, or simply PBI) compounds (MT-PBI, DT-PBI, MP-PBI and DP-PBI) with thienyl and phenyl substituents at the bay position were prepared to study the effect of substitution on the photophysical properties, especially the intersystem crossing (ISC) efficacy. We found that the derivative with a monothienyl substituent (MT-PBI) shows efficient ISC (singlet oxygen quantum yield ΦΔ = 72%) and longer triplet state lifetime (τT = 64.4 μs) as compared to reference compounds (derivative with monophenyl substituent at bay position, MP-PBI, ΦΔ = 23% and τT = 48.5 μs). Theoretical computations reveal that the ISC efficiency is dependent on the magnitude of the spin orbit couplings (SOC) between the singlet and triplet excited states, and the SOC matrix element is up to 2 cm−1 for compound showing the highest ISC efficiency. Femtosecond transient absorption spectra show the ISC rate constant of 8 × 109 s−1 for MT-PBI, and no charge transfer exists. Photo-driven electron transfer was observed with the PBI derivatives in the presence of sacrificial electron donor triethanolamine (TEOA), and reversible formation of PBI radical anion (PBI−•) was observed, which shows absorption in the range of 600 nm–800 nm and 900 nm–1000 nm. Delayed fluorescence (P-type) in MT-PBI was also observed (τT = 31.0 μs). These finding are useful for the design of PBI-derived heavy atom-free compounds to be used as triplet photosensitizers.

[EN] Pterin (Ptr) is a model photosensitizer that acts mainly through type I mechanism and is able to photoinduce the one-electron oxidation of purine and pyrimidine nucleobases. However, under anaerobic conditions Ptr reacts with thymine (T) to form photoadducts (Ptr-T) but does not lead to the photodegradation of guanine (G), which is the nucleobase with the lowest ionization potential. Accordingly, G is thermodynamically able to reduce the radicals of the other nucleobases and has been described in this sense as the "hole sink" of the DNA double helix. Here we analyze by steady-state and time-resolved studies the effect of G in the anaerobic photosensitization of T by Ptr, using nucleotides and oligonucleotides of different sequences. We demonstrated that G is able to reduce T radicals but does not prevent the formation of Ptr-T adducts. Our results suggest that after the encounter between the excited Ptr and T, and completion of the electron transfer step, part of the radicals escape from the solvent cage, to further react with other species. However, a proportion of radicals do not escape and evolve to photoadducts before separation. The structure-function relationship is at the heart of biology, and major protein deformations are correlated to specific functions. For ferrous heme proteins, doming is associated with the respiratory function in hemoglobin and myoglobins. Cytochrome c (Cyt c) has evolved to become an important electron-transfer protein in humans. In its ferrous form, it undergoes ligand release and doming upon photoexcitation, but its ferric form does not release the distal ligand, while the return to the ground state has been attributed to thermal relaxation. Here, by combining femtosecond Fe K-alpha and K-beta X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) with Fe K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), we demonstrate that the photocycle of ferric Cyt c is entirely due to a cascade among excited spin states of the iron ion, causing the ferric heme to undergo doming, which we identify. We also argue that this pattern is common to a wide diversity of ferric heme proteins, raising the question of the biological relevance of doming in such proteins.

Time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy and computational analysis of D-pi-A complexes comprising Fe-II donors and Ti-IV acceptors with the general formula (Cp2Ti)-Cp-R(C(2)Fc)(2) (where RCp = Cp*, Cp, and Cp-MeOOC) and (Cp2Ti)-Cp-TMS(C(2)Fc)(C2R) (where R = Ph or CF3) are reported. The transient absorption spectra are consistent with an Fe-III/Ti-III metal-to-metal charge-transfer (MMCT) excited state for all complexes. Thus, excited-state decay is assigned to back-electron transfer (BET), the lifetime of which ranges from 18.8 to 41 ps. Though spectroscopic analysis suggests BET should fall into the Marcus inverted regime, the observed kinetics are not consistent with this assertion. TDDFT calculations reveal that the singlet metal-to-metal charge-transfer ((MMCT)-M-1) excited state for the Fe-II/Ti-IV complexes is not purely MMCT in nature but is contaminated with the higher-energy (1)Fc (d-d) state. For the diferrocenyl complexes, (Cp2Ti)-Cp-R(C(2)Fc)(2), the ratio of MMCT to Fc centered character ranges from 57:43 for the Cp* complex to 85:15 for the Cp-MeOOC complex. For the diferrocenyl and monoferrocenyl complexes investigated herein, the excited-state lifetimes decrease with increased (1)Fc character. The effect of Cu-I coordination was also analyzed by time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy and reveals the elongation of the excited-state lifetime by 3 orders of magnitude to 63 ns. The transient spectra and TDDFT analysis suggest that the long-lived excited state in Cp2Ti(C(2)Fc)(2).CuX (where X is Cl or Br) is a triplet iron species with an electron arrangement of Ti-IV-Fe-3(II)-Cu-I.

A mechanism based on the sequential absorption of two photons by the components of a redox couple has been recently proposed for catalysis of the energetically demanding reduction of aryl halides. Here, we analyze the suggested photochemical mechanism of this reaction, which employs perylenediimide (PDI) as a photocatalyst, on the basis of spectroscopic, electrochemical and electron paramagnetic resonance data. Our results indicate that the photoexcited PDI radical anion (*PDI˙−) cannot play the role of a photosensitizer in the aforementioned process. Instead, the reduction of 4′-bromoacetophenone likely involves *PDI˙− decomposition products. The extremely short lifetime of the photoexcited transient species, as *PDI˙−, is a major general limitation for photocatalytic schemes based on sequential two-photon excitation. In order to better understand the potential of such schemes, we discuss them in the context of the Z-scheme in natural photosynthesis.

The deposition of perylene diimide-based aggregates (PDI) onto wide band gap n-type Sb-doped SnO2 (ATO) was investigated with the aim of finding efficient and versatile dye-sensitized platforms :for photoelectrochemical solar fuel generation. These ATO-PDI photoanodes displayed hydrolytic stability in a wide range of pH (from 1 to 13) and revealed superior perforthances (up to 1 mA/cm(2) net photocurrent at 1 V vs SCE) compared to both WO3-PDI and: undoped SnO2-PDI when used in a photoelectrochemical setup for HBr splitting. Although ATO, SnO2, and WO3 are endowed with similar conduction band edge energetics, in ATO the presence-of a:significant density of intrabandgap states, whose occupancy Varies with the applied potential, plays a substantial role in tuning the efficiency of photoinduced charge separation and collection. Furthermore, the investigation of the charge injection kinetics confirmed that, even in the absence of applied bias, ATO and WO3 are the best substrates for the-oxidative quenching of poorly reducing PDI excited states, with at least a fraction of them injecting within

We report an efficient molecular light-driven system to oxidize water to oxygen and a kinetic analysis of the factors determining the efficiency of the system. The system comprises a highly active molecular catalyst ([RuIV(tda)(py)2(O)]), [RuII(bpy)(bpy-COOEt)2]2+ (RuP), as sensitizer and Na2S2O8 as sacrificial electron acceptor. This combination exhibits a high quantum yield (25%) and chemical yield (93%) for photodriven oxygen evolution from water. The processes underlying this performance are identified using optical techniques, including transient absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence quenching. A high catalyst concentration is found to be required to optimize the efficiency of electron transfer between the oxidized sensitizer and the catalyst, which also has the effect of improving sensitizer stability. The main limitation of the quantum yield is the relatively low efficiency of S2O82– as an electron scavenger to oxidize the photoexcited ruthenium sensitizer RuP* to 2 RuP+, mainly due to competing back electron transfers to the RuP ground state. The overall rate of light-driven oxygen generation is determined primarily by the rate of photon absorption by the molecular sensitizer under the incident photon flux. As such, the performance of this efficient light-driven system is limited not by the properties of the molecular water oxidation catalyst, which exhibits both good kinetics and stability, but rather by the light absorption and quantum efficiency properties of the sensitizer and electron scavenger. We conclude by discussing the implications of these results for further optimization of molecular light-driven systems for water oxidation.

Charge-transfer complexes involving tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) derivatives are engineered in a 2D arrangement onto a carbon surface through the exposure of immobilized TTF units to TCNQ compounds. TTF molecules were immobilized as robust monolayers on carbon surfaces using the electrografting method followed by a click chemistry coupling. When the TTF monolayer is exposed to TCNQ, TCNQF2 (2,5-difluoro-TCNQ), and TCNQF4 (2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-TCNQ), strong donor–acceptor complexes are formed onto the surface. A considerable decrease of the electrochemical response accompanies the formation of the charge-transfer complex. This observation is rationalized by the analysis of original crystal samples using an ultramicroelectrode cavity, confirming that charge-transfer complexes are electrochemically silent. A fine control of the degree of charge transfer with the judicious choice of different acceptors is evidenced through electrochemical and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XP...

The addition of a compact titanium dioxide (TiO2) layer between the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass substrate and the mesoporous TiO2 layer in the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) based on the iodide/triiodide redox couple (I-/I-3(-)) is known to improve its current-voltage characteristics. The compact layer decreases the recombination of electrons extracted through the FTO layer with I-3(-) around the maximum power point. Furthermore, the short-circuit photocurrent was improved, which previously has been attributed to the improved light transmittance and/or better contact between TiO2 and FTO. Here, we demonstrate that the compact TiO2 layer has another beneficial effect: it blocks the reaction between charge carriers in the FTO and photogenerated diiodide radical species (I-2(-center dot)). Using photomodulated voltammetry, it is demonstrated that the cathodic photocurrent found at bare FTO electrodes is blocked by the addition of a compact TiO2 layer, while the anodic photocurrent due to reaction with I-2(-center dot) is maintained. A donor acceptor dyad composed of a BF2-chelated dipyrromethene (BODIPY) and a C-60 fullerene has been newly synthesized and characterized. The two moieties are linked by direct addition of an azido substituted BODIPY on the C-60, producing an imino fullerene BODIPY adduct. The photoinduced charge transfer process in this system was studied by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. Electron transfer toward the fullerene was found to occur selectively exciting both the BODIPY chromophore at 475 nm and the C-60 unit at 266 nm on a time scale of a few picoseconds, but the dynamics of charge separation was different in the two cases. Eletrochemical studies provided information on the redox potentials of the involved species and spectroelectrochemical measurements allowed to unambiguously assign the absorption band of the oxidized BODIPY moiety, which helped in the interpretation of the transient absorption spectra. The experimental studies were complemented by a theoretical analysis based on DFT computations of the excited state energies of the two components and their electronic couplings, which allowed identification of the charge transfer mechanism and rationalization of the different kinetic behavior observed by changing the excitation conditions.

Quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations are employed to assign previously recorded experimental spectroscopic signatures of the intermediates occurring during the photo-induced repair of (6-4) photolesions by photolyases to specific molecular structures. Based on this close comparison of experiment and theory it is demonstrated that the acting repair mechanism involves proton transfer from the protonated His365 to the N3' nitrogen of the lesion, which proceeds simultaneously with intramolecular OH transfer along an oxetane-like transition state.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) oxidize guanosines in DNA to form 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG), a biomarker for oxidative stress. Herein we describe a novel 64-microwell electrochemiluminescent (ECL) array enabling sensitive multiplexed detection of 8-oxodG in dsDNA without hydrolysis. Films of Nafion and reduced graphene oxide containing ECL dye [Os(bpy)(2)(phen-benz-COOH)](2+) (OsNG, {bpy= 2,2'-bipyridine and phen-benz-COOH = (4-(1,10-phenanthrolin-6-yl)benzoic acid)}) were assembled into microwells on a pyrolytic graphite wafer to detect 8-oxodG in oligonucleotides by electrochemiluminescence (ECL). DNA oxidation by Fenton's reagent or by ROS formation during redox cycles involving NADPH, Cu-II, and model metabolites was monitored. UPLC-MS/MS of oxidized DNA samples were used for calibration. Detection limit for the fluidic arrays was one 8-oxodG per 670 intact nucleobases, or 0.15%. The method is sensitive enough to evaluate DNA oxidation from biologically relevant ROS-generating reactions of Cull, NADPH, and model metabolites.

With an excess of a strong acid, 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-quinone (DDQ) is shown to promote metal-free intermolecular oxidative dehydrogenative (ODH) 3,3'-coupling of 2-aryl-benzo[b]furans and 2-aryl-benzo[b]thiophenes up to 92% yield as demonstrated with 9 substrates. Based on the analysis of oxidation potentials and molecular orbitals combined with EPR, NMR and UV-Vis observations, the studied reaction is initiated by a DDQ-substrate charge transfer complex and presumably proceeds via oxidation of the substrate into an electrophilic radical cation that further reacts with another molecule of a neutral substrate. The coupling reactivity can easily be predicted from the oxidation potential of the substrate and the morphology of its frontier molecular orbitals. The intermolecular ODH coupling reaction allowed a concise total synthesis of the natural product shandougenine B.

The oxidation of the C-H and C=C bonds of hydrocarbons with H2O2 catalyzed by non-heme iron complexes with pentadentate ligands is widely accepted as involving a reactive Fe-IV=O species such as [(N4Py)Fe-IV=O](2+) formed by homolytic cleavage of the O-O bond of an Fe-III-OOH intermediate (where N4Py is 1,1-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)methanamine). We show here that at low H2O2 concentrations the Fe-IV=O species formed is detectable in methanol. Furthermore, we show that the decomposition of H2O2 to water and O-2 is an important competing pathway that limits efficiency in the terminal oxidant and indeed dominates reactivity except where only sub-/near-stoichiometric amounts of H2O2 are present. Although independently prepared [(N4Py)Fe-IV=O](2+) oxidizes stoichiometric H2O2 rapidly, the rate of formation of Fe-IV=O from the Fe-III-OOH intermediate is too low to account for the rate of H2O2 decomposition observed under catalytic conditions. Indeed, with excess H2O2, disproportionation to O-2 and H2O is due to reaction with the Fe-III-OOH intermediate and thereby prevents formation of the Fe-IV=O species. These data rationalize that the activity of these catalysts with respect to hydrocarbon/alkene oxidation is maximized by maintaining sub-/near-stoichiometric steady-state concentrations of H2O2, which ensure that the rate of the H2O2 oxidation by the Fe-III-OOH intermediate is less than the rate of the O-O bond homolysis and the subsequent reaction of the Fe-IV=O species with a substrate.

The role of relative concentrations of energy donors (fluorescein, D), acceptors (rhodamine, A) and silica on Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency and dynamics in dye silica conjugates has been studied, as a part of our initial attempts to ascertain the potential of dye-silica nanoconjugates as light harvesting nanoantennae. Two types of dye-silica nanoconjugates, prepared by the co-condensation method, have been examined. The first is based on silica nanoshells (SNS-dye) while the second is based on silica nanoparticles (SNP-dye). Both these nanostructures have a diameter of approximately 25 nm. Efficient energy transfer (91% and 97%, respectively) has been observed in both, for total fluorophore concentration upto 5-6 mmol, irrespective of the D : A ratio. The lower efficiency at dye concentrations greater than these has been rationalized by the competitive self-quenching of D. A risetime of approximately 500 fs is observed in the A emission in SNS-dye, but there is no such feature in SNP-dye. The shape and size dependence of the FRET efficiency and dynamics has been rationalized as follows: the initial step of dye rich core formation in nanoparticles results in high proximity of dye molecules to each other, leading to highly efficient FRET than in nanoshells. In larger SNP-dye nanoconjugates of 65 nm in diameter, the FRET efficiency decreases to 85%, while a risetime in D emission emerges. This provides support to the proposed correlation between efficiency and packing. Hence, it is inferred that total fluorophore concentration, rather than D : A ratios, governs the FRET dynamics and efficiency in these systems.

International audience; Solvent effects in beta-phosphorylated nitroxides show that nitrogen and phosphorus hyperfine coupling constants a(N) and a(p), increase and decrease with increasing polarity, polarizity, and Hydrogen Bond Donor effects of solvents, respectively. In a series of articles, it was shown that the driving interaction controlling the change in a(p) is the maximization of the N+center dot O-center dot center dot center dot center dot center dot center dot P+-O- dipole - dipole interaction. In this work, we show that the steric strain in Spiro beta-phosphotylated nitroxides affords the opposite trend for a(p) that is, a(p) increases with increasing solvent properties features. Light-induced chemical reactions on bulk metal surfaces have been explored for more than 50 years. Light absorption at the metal surface plays a key role in inducing photochemical transformations of adsorbed molecules. Our current ability to control both the absorption cross-sections and the energy of absorbed light by metal plasmonic nanoparticles opens new pathways for the manipulation of photochemical reactions. Physical phenomena associated with the localized surface plasmon resonances, such as energetic surface states and intensified electric fields, force us to revisit our traditional understanding of photochemical reactions at metal surfaces. Long standing goals in the field – such as bond selectivity and increased efficiency of photocatalytic processes – might now be achievable, assisted by plasmonic nanoparticles. This Progress Report intends to examine some of the elementary concepts and mechanisms behind these processes in the context of the most recent advancements in the fields of plasmonic-assisted chemistry, charge transfer at the nanoscale, and surface photochemistry.

Small push pull molecules attract much attention as prospective donor materials for organic solar cells (OSCs). By chemical engineering, it is possible to combine a number of attractive properties such as broad absorption, efficient charge separation, and vacuum and solution processabilities in a single molecule. Here we report the synthesis and early time photophysics of such a molecule, TPA-2T-DCV-Me, based on the triphenylamine (TPA) donor core and dicyanovinyl (DCV) acceptor end group connected by a thiophene bridge. Using time-resolved photoinduced absorption and photoluminescence, we demonstrate that in blends with [70]PCBM the molecule works both as an electron donor and hole acceptor, thereby allowing for two independent channels of charge generation. The charge-generation process is followed by the recombination of interfacial charge transfer states that takes place on the subnanosecond time scale as revealed by time-resolved photoluminescence and nongeminate recombination as follows from the OSC performance. Our findings demonstrate the potential of TPA-DCV-based molecules as donor materials for both solution-processed and vacuum-deposited OSCs.

The reduction of an aryl iodide is generally believed to involve a clean-cut two-electron: reduction to produce an aryl anion and iodide. This is in contradiction to what is observed if a highly efficient grafting agent, such as an aryldiazonium salt, is employed. The difference in behavior is explained by the much more extreme potentials required for reducing an aryl iodide; which facilitates the further reduction of the aryl radical formed as an intermediate. However, in this study we disclose that electrografting of aryl iodides is indeed possible upon extended voltammetric cycling. This implies that even if the number of aryl radicals left unreduced at the electrode surface is exceedingly small, a functionalization of the surface may still be promoted. In fact,, the grafting efficiency is found to increase during the grafting process, which may be explained by the inhibiting effect the growing film exerts on the competing reduction of the aryl radical. The, slow buildup of the organic film results in a well-ordered structure as shown by the well-defined electrochemical response frond a grafted film containing ferrocenylmethyl groups. Hence, the reduction of aryl Iodides allows a precisely controlled, albeit slow, growth of thin organic films.

A mononuclear hexa-coordinated iron carbonyl complex [Fe(mu-bdt)(CO)(2)(PTA)(2)](1) (bdt = 1,2-benzenedithiolate; PTA = 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane) with two bulky phosphine ligands in the trans position was synthesized and characterized by X-ray structural analysis coulometry data, FTIR, electrochemistry and electronic structure calculations. The complex undergoes a facilitated two-electron reduction 1/1(2-) and shows an inverted one-electron reduction for 1/1(-) at higher potentials. Electrochemical investigations of 1 are compared to the closely related [Fe(bdt)(CO)(2)(PMe3)(2)] compound. A mechanistic suggestion for the hydrogen evolution reaction upon proton reduction from acid media is derived. The stability of 1 in both weak and strong acids is monitored by cyclic voltammetry.

Multi-nuclear cobalt cores have been proposed as molecular analogues of the natural oxygen evolving complex, enabling water oxidation for artificial photosynthesis schemes and the production of solar fuels. In particular, cobalt containing polyoxometalates (Co-POMs) display a record activity as water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) in terms of the turnover number, turnover frequency, and quantum yield, when combined in a light activated oxygen evolving cycle with Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) as the photosensitizer. The unique behavior of high-nuclearity cobalt clusters is addressed herein by employing Co-POMs with Co >= 9 as molecular WOCs. The temporal dissection of the catalytic events is framed herein to investigate the initial photo-induced electron transfer (ET) occurring in the micro-to-millisecond time domain, and followed by the oxygen evolution kinetics taking place within a minute-to-hours regime. In particular, flash photolysis shows ET from the Co-POM to photogenerated Ru(bpy)(3)(3+) with well-behaved diffusional kinetics (bimolecular rate constants in the range k(ET) = 2.1-5.0 x 10(9) M-1 s(-1)) and counting up to 32 ET events in a 60 ms timeframe. The evolution of the Co-POMs is then traced under oxygenic conditions, where infrared and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) indicate that POM based structures are competent catalysts under the photo-assisted turnover regime.

International audience; In this work, we show that a dithienylethene (DTE) modified dipicolinic amide ligand can be a versatile tool to modulate Eu(III) and Yb(III) luminescence using light as an external stimulus. The nature of the modulation depends on the lanthanide emitter: with the europium ion, the DTE ligand quenches the red luminescence upon ring closure, whereas with the ytterbium ion, ring closure can be used to turn on the luminescence in the NIR range.

International audience; An expedient synthesis of the first examples of iron-carbonyl complex-coumarin conjugates is reported. 7-Amino/7-hydroxycoumarin derivatives have been readily derivatized through an easily implemented single-step reaction involving the tricarbonyl(eta(5)-cyclohexadienyl)iron(1+) cation [(C6H7)Fe(CO)(3)](+). The scope and limitations of this N-/O-alkylation reaction were also investigated. The fluorescence properties of these novel metal-carbonyl complexes have been studied and support their further use as valuable building blocks in the design of bimodal contrast agents for combined vibrational and fluorescence imaging. Three porphyrin-cobaloxime dyads, suitable for application in photoinduced hydrogen generation with sacrificial donors, are characterized by ultrafast spectroscopy in order to clarify the primary photochemical events.

A metal organic framework (MOF) based on the [Cu(4)I(4)DABCO(2)] cluster (DABCO = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane), MOF 1, shows bright emission with a maximum at 556 nm and an emission quantum yield of 0.53 in the solid state. When the large cavities of the MOF are loaded during the synthesis with different amounts of ferrocene {FeCp2, [((5)-C5H5)(2)Fe-II]}, the luminescence of MOF 1 decreases with the increase in the ferrocene content, reaching an almost complete quenching for 3.5 wt.-% of cage loading, corresponding to the complete filling of the MOF cavities. When an electric potential is applied to the FeCp2@MOF 1 deposited onto an ITO glass, the (FeCp2)-Cp-II is oxidised to (FeCp2+)-Cp-III, and the MOF 1 emission is partially switched on again, indicating that a photoinduced electron-transfer reaction is contributing to the quenching process.

The electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties of a bis-pyrid-4-yl functionalised vinylenedithio-TFF derivative, 1, in solution are reported. The compound was immobilised on a Pt electrode and the resulting layers formed were investigated using electrochemical techniques. Two oxidation processes were observed for 1, typical of TTF derivatives. A solvent dependence study revealed that the stabilisation of the radical cation intermediate, 1(center dot+), towards further oxidation is achieved in solvents with a low Gutmann donor number such as dichloromethane. Analysis of 1(2+) in solution under aerobic and anaerobic conditions reveal that its stability is compromised in the presence of oxygen and therefore the stability of monolayers of 1 is greatly enhanced under anaerobic conditions. Time dependent OFT calculations of the compound in several oxidation states are discussed to obtain information on the location of the various redox processes. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. International audience; Electrochemical and photophysical analysis of new donoracceptor systems 2 and 3, in which a benzothiadiazole (BTD) unit is covalently linked to a tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) core, have verified that the lowest excited state can be ascribed to an intramolecular-charge-transfer (ICT) (TTF)(benzothiadiazole) transition. Owing to better overlap of the HOMO and LUMO in the fused scaffold of compound 3, the intensity of the 1ICT band is substantially higher compared to that in compound 2. The corresponding CT fluorescence is also observed in both cases. The radical cation TTF+. is easily observed through chemical and electrochemical oxidation by performing steady-state absorption experiments. Interestingly, compound 2 is photo-oxidized under aerobic conditions.

Cyclotriphosphazene and cyclotetraphosphazene appended with six and eight covalently linked porphyrin-ferrocene conjugates respectively were synthesized by treating N3P3Cl6 and N4P4Cl8 with appropriate equivalents of ferrocene linked porphyrin containing meso-hydroxyphenyl group in THF in the presence of Cs2CO3 followed by column chromatographic purification. NMR and absorption studies indicated a weak interaction between adjacent porphyrin-ferrocene conjugates. Electrochemical studies supported electrochemical equivalence of ferrocenyl and porphyrinyl moieties in these multiporphyrin-ferrocene conjugate assemblies. The fluorescence studies showed significant quenching of porphyrin fluorescence due to photo-induced electron transfer from ferrocene to singlet state of porphyrin unit in these assemblies. In this paper, we investigate the synthetic tailoring of the spectral response and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of beta-enaminones through bandgap modulation. Two donor/acceptor substituted beta-enaminones, namely, 3-(4-methoxyphenylamino)-2-cyclohexen-1-one (OACO) and 3-(4nitrophenylamino)- 2-cyclohexen-1-one (NACO) have been synthesized along with their unsubstituted counterpart, 3-(phenylamino)-2-cyclohexen-1-one (PACO). Steady state as well as time resolved spectroscopic techniques with picosecond resolution are used to record their spectral responses. Substitution of the donor group (-OCH3) mildly enhances the charge transfer from the phenyl ring to the enaminone moiety, while substitution of the acceptor group (-NO2) jeopardizes the charge transfer through mutual electron withdrawing effects of PNA and enaminone moieties. Combined experimental and quantum chemical investigations reveal that the ground state photophysics of OACO and NACO in water are controlled by both microscopic and macroscopic solvation with dominant contribution from the former. Time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations predict that the HOMO to [LUMO+1] transition gives rise to the absorption spectra of OACO in water, while the absorption by the enaminone moiety of NACO arises as a result of a HOMO to LUMO transition. A crossing between the first (S-1) and the second excited (S-2) states takes place in the microclusters of PACO, OACO and NACO with water. The intersystem crossing (ISC) has been found to be the major reason for low quantum yields in these molecules. The band gap modulation through waxing and waning of the conjugation strength is expected to throw light on many ICT-driven processes and provides means of tuning the properties depending on it.

Phosphorus complexes of porphyrinoids such as porphyrins, corroles, [Formula: see text]-fused porphyrins, [Formula: see text]-fused expanded porphyrins and expanded porphyrins can be prepared readily by treating the porphyrinoid with phosphorylating agents such as PX3, PX5and POX3(X [Formula: see text] Cl or Br) under standard reaction conditions. In phosphorus porphyrinoids, the phosphorus is generally high valent [Formula: see text]5 oxidation state and the coordination number is varied from four to six. The insertion of P(V) into porphyrinoids alters the structure and electronic properties of the macrocycle significantly. Specially, the phosphorus binding mode is different from one porphyrinoid to another. The oxophilicity nature of P(V) in P(V) porphyrinoids is very useful to change variety of axial ligands and also helps to synthesize multi-porphyrin arrays by axial bonding approach. This review summarizes the phosphorus complexes of five different porphyrinoids and discusses their structure and electronic properties as well as their applications in the synthesis of more elaborate P(V) porphyrinoid based architectures.

The present work describes ultrafast thermalized and hot hole transfer processes from photo-excited CdSe quantum dots (QDs) and CdSe/ZnS core–shell QDs (CSQDs) to newly synthesized thiols. Three thiols namely 2-mercapto-N-phenylacetamide (AAT), 3-mercapto-N-phenylpropanamide (APT) and 3-mercapto-N-(4-methoxyphenyl) propanamide (ADPT) were synthesized and their interaction with both CdSe QDs and CdSe/ZnS CSQDs was monitored. Steady state absorption study suggests the exciton delocalization from CdSe QDs in the presence of the thiols. However similar features were not observed in the presence of a ZnS shell over a CdSe core, instead a broadening in the excitonic peak was observed with both APT and ADPT but not with AAT. This exciton delocalization and broadening in the excitonic peak was also confirmed by ultrafast transient absorption studies. Steady state and time resolved emission studies show hole transfer from photo-excited QDs and CSQDs to the thiols. A signature of hot hole extraction was observed in transient absorption studies which was confirmed by fluorescence upconversion studies. Both hot and thermalized hole transfer rates from CdSe QDs and CdSe/ZnS CSQDs to the thiols were determined using the fluorescence up-conversion technique. Experiments with different ZnS shell thicknesses have been carried out which suggest that hole transfer is possible till 2.5 monolayer of the ZnS shell. To the best of our knowledge we are reporting for the first time the extraction of hot holes from CdSe/ZnS type I CSQDs by a molecular adsorbate.

Paper describes chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements in algal cells, and intact plant leaves and isolated chloroplasts. It focuses on amplitude and 10 μs-resolved kinetics of variable fluorescence responses upon excitation with fluorescence-saturating pulses (SP) and with 25 μs saturating single turnover flashes (STF) which are exposed before, during and after a 100 s actinic illumination (AL) of low and high intensity. In addition to the amply documented suppression of the maximal variable fluorescence from Fm to F m ′ , the relative proportion of the distinguished O–J-, J–I- and I–P-phases of an SP-induced response is shown to be distinctly different in dark- and light-adapted leaves. The O–J-phase in the 0.01–1 ms time range is much less sensitive to light adaptation than the other phases in the 1–200 ms range. In algae and chloroplasts, the amplitude F m STF of the STF-induced response is hardly affected by a shift from the dark- to the light-activated steady state. The results support the hypothesis that the maximal variable fluorescence Fm induced by a multiple-turnover, fluorescence-saturating pulse (SP), is associated with the release of photochemical and photoelectrochemical quenching. It is argued that the OJIPMT- or Kautsky induction curve of variable chlorophyll fluorescence in the 0–100 s time range is the reflection of the release of photochemical quenching supplemented with a temporary Photosystem I (PSI)-dependent photoelectric stimulation and transient release of photoelectrochemical quenching of radiative energy loss in the Photosystem II (PSII) antennas, rather than solely of a decrease in PSII photochemical activity as is usually concluded.

Dynamic control over the formation of H- or J-type aggregates of chromophores is of fundamental importance for developing responsive organic optoelectronic materials. In this study, the first example of photoswitching between a nonstacked and an intramolecularly H-stacked arrangement of perylenebisimides (PBI) is demonstrated. The system is composed of a central switching unit (overcrowded alkene) tethered to two PBI chromophores. cis-trans isomerization of the switching unit, induced by alternate irradiation at 312 and 365 nm, can drive two PBI chromophores reversibly between an intramolecularly "aggregated" and "nonaggregated" state. Distinct changes in UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra are observed following photoisomerization. This approach allows for efficient control of intramolecular H-stack formation with no significant intermolecular interactions spanning over at least 4 orders of magnitude of concentration (from 10(-8) to 10(-4) M) and a range of solvents and temperatures.

International audience; CPD photolyase enzymatically repairs the major UV-induced lesion in DNA, the cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD), by photoreversion of the damage reaction. An enzyme-bound reduced flavin (FADH(-)) cofactor functions its photosensitizer. Upon excitation, it transiently transfers an electron to the CPD, triggering scission of the interpyrimidine bonds. After repair completion, the electron returns to the flavin to restore its functional reduced form. A major difficulty for time-resolved spectroscopic monitoring of the enzymatic repair reaction is that absorption changes around 265 nm accompanying pyrimidine restoration are obscured by the strong background absorption of the nondimerized bases in DNA. Here we present it novel substrate for CPD photolyase that absorbs only weakly around 265 nm: a modified thymidine 10-mer with a central CPD and all bases, except the one at the 3' end, replaced by 5,6-dihydrothymine which virtually does not absorb around 265 run. Repair of this substrate by photolyases from Anacystis nidulans and from Escherichia coli was compared with repair of two conventional substrates: a 10-mer of unmodified thymidines containing a central CPD and an acetone-sensitized thymidine 18-mer that contained in average six randomly distributed CPDs per strand. In all cases, the novel substrate was repaired with an efficiency very similar to that of the conventional substrates (quantum yields in the order of 0.5 upon excitation of FADH(-)). Flash-induced transient absorption changes at 267 nm could be recorded on a millisecond time scale with a single subsaturating flash and yielded very similar signals for all three substrates. Because of its low background absorption around 265 nm and the defined structure, the novel substrate is a promising tool for fast and ultrafast transient absorption studies on pyrimidine dimer splitting by CPD photolyase.

Ultrafast visible-pump/IR-probe spectroscopy is applied to study the wavelength dependence of charge photogeneration in materials based on donor-acceptor charge-transfer complexes (CTCs) of the conjugated polymer MEH-PPV. In binary polymer-acceptor blends, photoexcitation in the absorption band of either CTC or polymer results in similar dynamics of the charge-associated transient absorption. Likewise, in polymer/CTC-acceptor/fullerene ternary blends, where charge separation occurs via a two-step pathway, the photophysics is also independent of excitation wavelength. These similarities in charge dynamics indicate that CTC excited states serve as an intermediate for charge photogeneration. Voltammetry of cytochrome P450 (cyt P450) enzymes in ultrathin films with polyions was related for the first time to electronic and secondary structure. Heterogeneous electron transfer (hET) rate constants for reduction of the cyt P450s depended on heme iron spin state, with low spin cyt P450cam giving a value 40-fold larger than high spin human cyt P450 1A2, with mixed spin human P450 cyt 2E1 at an intermediate value. Asymmetric reduction-oxidation peak separations with increasing scan rates were explained by simulations featuring faster oxidation than reduction. Results are consistent with a square scheme in which oxidized and reduced forms of cyt P450s each participate in rapid conformational equilibria. Rate constants for oxidation of ferric cyt P450s in films by t-butyl hydroperoxide to active ferryloxy cyt P450s from rotating disk voltammetry suggested a weaker dependence on spin state, but in the reverse order of the observed hET reduction rates. Oxidation and reduction rates of cyt P450s in the films are also likely to depend on protein secondary structure around the heme iron.

Smart surfaces, surfaces that respond to an external stimulus in a defined manner, hold considerable potential as components in molecular-based devices, not least as discrete switching elements. Many stimuli can be used to switch surfaces between different states, including redox, light, pH, and ion triggers. The present review focuses on Molecular switching through die electronic excitation of molecules on surfaces with light. In developing light-responsive surfaces, investigators face several challenges, not only in achieving high photostationary states and fully reversible switching, but also in dealing with fatigue resistance and the effect of immobilization itself on molecular properties. The immobilization of light-responsive molecules requires the design and synthesis of functional molecular components both to achieve light switching and to anchor the molecular entity onto a surface. This review discusses several demonstrative examples of photoswitchable molecular systems in which the photochemistry has been explored in the immobilized State under ambient conditions and especially on electroactive surfaces, including self-assembled monolayers, bilayers, and polymer films.

Four novel π-conjugated chromophores with an azobenzene core (1-4) have been synthesized exploiting Pd-catalysed cross-coupling reactions between ethynyl-bearing azobenzene cores and suitably-designed peripheral groups. While in molecules 2 and 3 the azobenzene core is equipped, respectively, with ethynyl and 1,3-butadiyne spacers terminated with a substituted aniline, molecule 4 is an homologue of derivative 2 in which the terminal moieties are replaced by meso-substituted Zn-porphyrins. X-Ray crystallographic studies of substituted azobenzene 2 reveal a nearly planar arrangement of the four phenyl rings and the trans configuration of the NN central unit. The UV-Vis absorption spectrum of molecule 1 in cyclohexane (CHX) is very similar to that of unsubstituted azobenzenes; upon irradiation at the maximum of the intense π-π absorption feature (360 nm), 1 undergoes trans → cis photoisomerization reaching a photostationary state. The process is fully reversible both photochemically and thermally (ca. 120 min in the dark). The UV-Vis electronic absorption features of 2-4 are dramatically different compared to those of 1, but the photochemical process can still be traced and exhibits full reversibility in CHX. Also in the case of compound 4, where the photoreactive azobenzene excited states might be quenched by the low-lying porphyrin electronic levels, the photoreaction does occur. Extensive STM investigations of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 2 and 3 at the solid/liquid interface were performed by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). It is evidenced that only the trans isomer can be physisorbed on the surface whereas the cis form, either produced under illumination in situ or prepared by irradiation of the solution prior to deposition (ex-situ), is never observed on the surface. The smallest azobenzene 1 and the bisporphyrin system 4 did not physisorb onto the surface because of the very small size and the bulky 3,5-di(tert-butyl) phenyl groups hindering flat adsorption on HOPG, respectively. © 2009 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Highly fluorescent organic nanoparticles with size of about 300 nm were prepared by nanosecond laser ablation of micrometer-sized powder of dendronized perylenediimide dispersed in water. The nanoparticle colloidal solution provided a fluorescence quantum yield of 0.58. The absorption and emission spectral studies demonstrated that the bulky dendron groups at the side bays of perylenediimide chromophore efficiently suppress the interchromophoric interactions in the nanoparticles. Fluorescence measurement on several single nanoparticles underlines that the prepared nanoparticles are bright and photo-stable enough to be a useful probe for single particle fluorescence investigation.

A periodic density functional theory method using the B3LYP hybrid exchange-correlation potential is applied to the Prussian blue analogue RbMn[Fe(CN)(6)] to evaluate the suitability of the method for studying, and predicting, the photomagnetic behavior of Prussian blue analogues and related materials. The method allows correct description of the equilibrium structures of the different electronic configurations with regard to the cell parameters and bond distances. In agreement with the experimental data, the calculations have shown that the low-temperature phase (LT; Fe2+(t(2g)(6), S = 0)-CN-Mn-3+(t(2g)(3)e(g)(1), S = 2)) is the stable phase at low temperature instead of the high-temperature phase (HT; Fe3+(t(2g)(5), S = 1/2)-CN-Mn2+(t(2g)(3)e(2)g, S = 5/2)). Additionally, the method gives an estimation for the enthalpy difference (HT double left right arrow LT) with a value of 143 J mol(-1) K-1. The comparison of our calculations with experimental data from the literature and from our calorimetric and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements on the Rb0.97Mn[Fe(CN)(6)](0.98)center dot 1.03H(2)O compound is analyzed, and in general, a satisfactory agreement is obtained. The method also predicts the metastable nature of the electronic configuration of the high-temperature phase, a necessary condition to photoinduce that phase at low temperatures. It gives a photoactivation energy of 2.36 eV, which is in agreement with photoinduced demagnetization produced by a green laser.

Although the desirability of developing synthetic molecular machine systems that can function on surfaces is widely recognized, to date the only well-characterized examples of electrochemically switchable rotaxane-based molecular shuttles which can do so are based on the tetracationic viologen macrocycle pioneered by Stoddart. Here, we report on a [2]rotaxane which features succinamide and naphthalene diimide hydrogen-bonding stations for a benzylic amide macrocycle that can shuttle and switch its net position both in solution and in a monolayer. Three oxidation states of the naphthalene diimide unit can be accessed electrochemically in solution, each one with a different binding affinity for the macrocycle and, hence, corresponding to a different distribution of the rings between the two stations in the molecular shuttle. Cyclic voltammetry experiments show the switching to be both reversible and cyclable and allow quantification of the translational isomer ratios (thermodynamics) and shuttling dynamics (kinetics) for their interconversion in each state. Overall, the binding affinity of the naphthalene diimide station can be changed by 6 orders of magnitude over the three states. Unlike previous electrochemically active amide-based molecular shuttles, the reduction potential of the naphthalene diimide unit is sufficiently positive (−0.68 V) for the process to be compatible with operation in self-assembled monolayers on gold. Incorporating pyridine units into the macrocycle allowed attachment of the shuttles to an acid-terminated self-assembled monolayer of alkane thiols on gold. The molecular shuttle monolayers were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and their electrochemical behavior probed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and double-potential step chronoamperometry, which demonstrated that the redox-switched shuttling was maintained in this environment, occurring on the millisecond time scale.

The effect of deuteriation on the photophysical properties of two series of regioselectively deuteriated Ru(II) complexes ([Ru(bipy)(x)(ph(2)phen)(3-x)](2+), where x = 0-3 and ph(2)phen is 4,7-diphenyt-1,10-phenanthroline and [Ru(biPY)(2)(dcbipy(2-))], where H(2)dcbipy is 4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridyl) is reported. Although overall, deuteriation results in an increase in emission lifetime for all complexes, the effect of substitution of hydrogen for deuterium shows strong regioselectivity both in terms of the ligand and the position on individual ligands that are exchanged. Non-covalent porphyrin dyads and triads containing N 3 S porphyrin and RuN 4 porphyrin subunits were synthesized by treating meso-pyridyl-21-thiaporphyrin with RuTPP(CO)(EtOH) in toluene at refluxing temperature. The dyads and triads were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and the properties were compared with the reported dyad containing N 4 and RuN 4 porphyrin subunits. The 1 H NMR study of dyads and triads indicated that the inner NH , β-heterocycle and meso-pyridyl protons of the 21-thiaporphyrin unit experienced large upfield shifts as compared to their corresponding monomeric meso-pyridyl-21-thiaporphyrins due to the ring current effect of RuTPP(CO) subunit. The singlet state photophysical properties of N 3 S porphyrin subunit in dyads and triads showed 50-80% quenching of fluorescence as observed previously for N 4- RuN 4 dyad due to heavy ruthenium ion(s).
