Perfluoropolyalkylethers derived from hexafluoropropylene oxide were functionalized with maleimide groups. Irradiated by UV‐light, the new maleimide macromonomers demonstrated very fast polymerization kinetics with a curing time as fast as 8 s. The effect on photopolymerization of different features such as the molecular weight of the fluorinated chain and the chain length of the hydrogenated spacer were studied, as well as the influence of the type of photoinitiator and the presence of air. Thermal and surface properties of the UV‐cured polymers were examined and were typical to fluoropolymers in view of water–oil repellent coatings. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A photoinitiator-free acceptor-donor copolymerization between a mixture of bismaleimides containing oligo(propyleneglycol)s as acceptor monomers and divinyl ether as the donor monomer under UV is described. The copolymerization without any photoinitiator is faster than homopolymerization of the sole maleimide, thanks to an acceptor-donor charge-transfer complex. The thermal and mechanical properties of the cured materials depend essentially on the cross-linking densities and on the number of repeated units in the bismaleimide backbone. Most copolymerizations produce elastomers with remarkable rubbery properties on a large temperature scale. The simple chemistry presented here can easily compete with acrylate photochemistry since neither photoinitiator nor oxygen removal is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The syntheses of original fluorinated maleimide and telechelic bismaleimide bearing C6F13 and C6F12 groups, respectively, and their use as reactive additives in photopolymerizable formulations of telechelic poly(propylene glycol) bismaleimide (PPGBMI) are presented. Fluorinated maleimide was synthetized in five steps in 63% overall yield from C6F13C2H4I precursor, whereas the fluorinated bismaleimide was prepared in six steps in 14% overall yield from IC6F12I. These latter led to fluorinated azido and diazido intermediates that were reduced into the fluorinated amine and diamines in two steps. The condensation of amine and diamine onto maleic anhydride offered an amic acid and a diamic acid, which were subsequently cyclized into fluorinated maleimide and bismaleimide. Formulations of telechelic PPGBMI containing a low concentration of these fluorinated maleimide and bismaleimide were UV cured and the surface properties of the resulting films were investigated. A deep modification of the surface properties was noted when the monomaleimide was used. In all the cases, a selective enrichment of the fluorinated monomer at the film surface was observed. The dependence of the surface properties on the fluorinated maleimide and bismaleimide concentrations were also studied, and showed an asymptotic behavior of the contact angle with only 1.5 wt % of fluorinated maleimide additive, whatever the conditions. This monomaleimide led to better hydrophobic and oleophobic properties of the resulting material than that containing the telechelic one. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Patterned coatings based on biodegradable crosslinked poly(ester/carbonate) have been prepared by photo-induced ring-opening polymerization of a liquid bifunctional trimethylene carbonate-based monomer using poly(ε-caprolactone) triol as initiator and a guanidine superbase photogenerator activated by irradiation at 385 nm. The influence of various parameters on gel time such as components molar ratios, irradiation time or reaction temperature, has been evaluated by photorheometry. The formulation and experimental conditions offering the shortest gel times were then employed to produce a patterned coating by stereolithography. Sample thickness proves to be independent of irradiation time, but increases with reaction time, thus attesting of a dark polymerization. Abstract: This review aims to cover the state of the art of renewable feedstock use in materials production using photopolymerization processes. This area of investigation is an emerging field of research, and it combines biosourced molecules with a cheap and rapid radiative processing method that avoids any emission of volatile organic compounds. The main classes of naturally occurring molecules and macromolecules such as lipids, amino acids, carbohydrates, polyenes, etc. are detailed. The way they are used or integrated in photopolymerizable systems are described in relation to their applications: coatings, biomaterials, biodegradable drug delivery systems, microelectronics or optoelectronics. This critical review takes into account the reactivity of the various compounds as well as their cytotoxicity, biodegradability and finally their end uses. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
