The authors argue that regulatory action, targeted interphysician collaborations, and educational training for medical students is needed in order to make patients with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) and other disabilities feel as home in America's health care system as of 2016. Physician-patient relations are examined, along with the concerns of SCI patients and the authors' experiences in developing a medical home for people with SCI.

The author offers his thoughts on grace at work in the medical profession. He relates his relationship with a medical student and some of his patients. He cites that he is grateful when his students find time to chat with him online as it reminds him that his role as a mentor is meaningful. He states that patients and their families who expressed appreciation of his care have given him a sense of worth. He believes that grace is at work when he receive kind words from a patient, among others.
