Beam halo is one of the crucial issues limiting the machine performance and causing radioactivation in high-intensity accelerators. A clear picture of beam-halo formation is of great importance for successful suppression of the undesired beam loss. We present numerical and experimental studies of transverse and longitudinal halos in the KEK Accelerator Test Facility. The fair accordance between predictions and observations in various conditions indicates that the Touschek scattering is the dominant mechanism forming the horizontal and momentum halos.

For future linear colliders, a nanometer-scale beam size at the interaction point (IP) is one of the most challenging technical aspects. To explore the feasibility of a final focus system with a high chromaticity level, comparable to that of the Compact Linear Collider, the ultralow ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{*}$ optics has been proposed and tuned at the KEK Accelerator Test Facility 2. In this paper, the recent experimental results are presented, which demonstrate the capability of achieving and stabilizing a vertical average beam size of 60 nm and below at the virtual IP. The observed vertical beam size is about 20 nm above the numerical predictions in the presence of static and dynamic imperfections. We interpret this discrepancy as beam size growth due to multipole fields, beam jitters and wakefield effects, and diagnostic errors.

A compact accelerator based super-radiant THz source is under development at Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi. The facility is based on the principle of pre-bunched Free Electron Laser (FEL) which will produce THz radiation in the range of ∼ 0.18 to 3 THz from a modulated electron beam. A photocathode electron gun will generate a short train of micro-bunches (a “comb” beam) driven by a fibre laser system capable of producing multi micro-pulse laser beam with variable separation (“comb” laser pulse). Upon acceleration, the electron beam will be injected in to a compact undulator magnet tuned to the same frequency as the separation of the electron micro-bunches. The paper discusses the process of enhancement of super-radiant emission of radiation due to modulation in the comb beam and the conditions required to achieve maximum enhancement of the radiation power. The feasibility study of generating a comb beam at the photocathode and its transport through the beamline while preserving its temporal structure has been reported. To evaluate the characteristics of the radiation emitted from the comb beam, a C + + based particle tracker and Liẽnard–Wiechert field solver has been developed. The conceptual understanding of the emission of radiation from comb beam is shown to conform with the numerical results. The code has been used to calculate the radiation pulse energy emitted into the central cone of undulator for various comb beam configurations.

We consider a charged particle bunch passing along the axis of a semi-infinite open-ended circular vacuum waveguide placed into a collinear infinite waveguide with larger radius. The rigorous solution of this problem is constructed using residue-calculus technique. Analytical expressions for the Fourier harmonics of the field components are obtained in each domain of the structure. Numerical integration over frequency is also performed and time-domain field dependencies are obtained. The analytical results are compared with the results of the numerical simulation and an excellent agreement is observed. In particular, we report on the effect of a “bunch image,” a radiation pulse is generated in the coaxial area and has the form of the transverse electric field correlating with the longitudinal charge distribution within the bunch.

This paper numerically and experimentally demonstrates the influence of the space charge forces in short electron bunches on the spectrum of coherent transition radiation. To estimate and optimize dimensions of a short electron bunches produced by the KEK LUCX RF gun, ASTRA software was employed. Obtained results indicate that the modification of the femtosecond UV laser pulse transverse profile allows to decrease the space charge forces. The simulation results were confirmed experimentally with the good agreement.

A project to construct a compact pre-bunched Free Electron Laser by using a normal conducting photocathode electron gun has been undertaken at Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi, India. In this facility, the short laser pulses from a high power laser system will be split into many pulses (2–16) commonly known as ‘Comb beam’ and will strike the photocathode material (metal and semiconductor) to produce electron beam bunches. The electrons will be accelerated up to an energy of ∼8 MeV by a copper cavity operated at a frequency of 2860 MHz and the beam will be injected into a compact, planar permanent undulator magnet to produce THz radiation. The radiation frequency designed to be tuned in the range of 0.15–3 THz by varying the magnetic field of the undulator and/or changing the energy of the electron. The separation of the laser micro-pulses will be varied by adjusting the path length difference to alter the separation of the electron micro-bunches and to maximise the radiation intensity.

We present recent achievements in the application of optical diffraction radiation (ODR) to the measurement of the transverse beam size of a 1.3 GeV micrometer-size electron beam performed with an instrument installed in the extended extraction line of the KEK Accelerator Test Facility. ODR is a recent technique for the measurement of the transverse size and emittance of highly relativistic particle beams. ODR has the advantage of being a noninvasive and relatively inexpensive technique and is a candidate for the operation of linear particle accelerators, where no simple alternatives (e.g., synchrotron radiation) are available. In an effort to improve the resolution and performance, we establish an alternative target microfabrication technology, adopt solutions to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, and perform an experiment in the UV spectrum at 250 nm. With such a configuration, a transverse beam size as low as $3\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$ is measured, drastically improving on past measurements reported in the literature. In light of these results, ODR, when combined with a high-resolution optical-transition-radiation monitor, represents a credible diagnostics solution for low-emittance high-intensity particle beams.

When a relativistic charged particle travels at a short distance from the surface of dielectric material Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation (ChDR) is produced inside the dielectric. Recent observation of incoherent ChDR in the visible spectrum has opened the possibility of using this radiation for non-invasive beam size and position measurements. An experimental test to study this technique for highly directional beam position measurement has been initiated on the CLEAR facility at CERN, whilst another experimental investigation is underway at the Accelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2) at KEK, Japan, to measure the resolution limit of ChDR for beam imaging diagnostics. Energy modulated electron beams have a wide range of applications in accelerator physics, for example they can serve as drivers in resonant wakefield acceleration schemes. A strong wakefield induced energy modulation can be produced using a dielectric lined waveguide, the resultant micro-bunched beam is capable of producing coherent terahertz radiation *. We report on observation of energy modulation due to self-wakefields in a few picosecond duration and ~1 nC charge electron bunches of LUCX facility at KEK. To produce the modulation, we used a corrugated dielectric waveguide with an inner radius of 2 mm and a period of corrugation of 10 mm. In this case, the period of corrugation is longer than the wavelength of the main accelerating mode. We show electromagnetic simulations of on-axis electric fields leading to an optimisation of the corrugation period allowing to enhance the accelerating/decelerating fields compared to dielectric lined waveguides with a constant inner radius., Proceedings of the 10th Int. We present recent results on non-invasive beam profile measurement techniques based on Diffraction Radiation (DR) and Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation (ChDR). Both methods exploit the analysis of broadband electromagnetic radiation resulting from polarization currents produced in, or at the boundary of, a medium in close proximity of a charged particle beam. To increase the resolution of DR, measurements were performed in the UV range at a wavelength of 250 nm. With such configurations, sensitivity to the beam size of a 1.2 GeV electron beam below 10 um was observed at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK, Japan. In the case of the ChDR, a proof of principle study was carried out at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) where beam profiles were measured in 2017 on a 5.3 GeV positron beam. At the time of writing an experiment to measure the resolution limit of ChDR has been launched at ATF where smaller beam sizes are available. During the last three years, the emission of Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation (ChDR), appearing when a relativistic charged particle moves in the vicinity of a dielectric medium, has been investigated with the aim of providing non-invasive beam diagnostics. ChDR has very interesting properties, with a large number of photons emitted in a narrow and well-defined solid angle, providing excellent conditions for detection with very little background. This contribution will present a collection of recent beam measurements performed at several facilities such as the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, the Advanced Test Facility 2 at KEK, the Diamond light source in the UK and the CLEAR test facility at CERN. Those results, complemented with simulations, suggest that the use of both incoherent and coherent emission of Cherenkov diffraction radiation could open up new beam instrumentation possibilities for relativistic charged particle beams., Proceedings of the 8th International Beam Instrumentation Conference, IBIC2019, Malmö, Sweden

Accelerator-based terahertz (THz) radiation has been expected to realize a high-power broadband source. Employing a low-emittance and short-bunch electron beam at a high repetition rate, a scheme of coherent diffraction-radiation in an optical cavity layout is proposed. The scheme's stimulated radiation process between bunches can greatly enhance the efficiency of the radiation emission. We performed an experiment with a superconducting linac constructed as an energy recovery linac (ERL) test facility. The electron beam passes through small holes in the cavity mirrors without being destroyed. A sharp THz resonance signal, which indicates broadband stimulated radiation correlated with beam deceleration, was observed while scanning the round-trip length of the cavity. This observation proves the efficient beam-to-radiation energy conversion due to the stimulated radiation process., Comment: 13 pages , 20 figures

Accelerator-based terahertz (THz) radiation has been expected to realize a high-power broad-band source. Employing a low-emittance and short-bunch electron beam at a high repetition rate, a scheme to resonantly excite optical cavity modes of THz spectrum range via coherent diffraction radiation has been proposed. The confocal cavity design is the special case that resonance conditions of all the eigen modes coincide, resulting in realizing broad-band excitation. But in general cases of non-confocal cavities, the resonance condition depends on the mode, and the resonance peak becomes wide and weak. We performed an experiment with a non-confocal cavity as a follow-up experiment of that we have done with a confocal cavity. The main objective of the project is to build a high resolution time-profile monitor for femtosecond electron beams, based on the spectral analysis of coherent Smith-Purcell radiation (cSPr). The monitor will be capable of determining the electron bunch time profile non-destructively and on a shot-by-shot basis. The results of recent experimental and theoretical studies are presented, and the conceptual design of the monitor is discussed.

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a TeV-scale high-luminosity linear $e^+e^-$ collider under development at CERN. Following the CLIC conceptual design published in 2012, this report provides an overview of the CLIC project, its current status, and future developments. It presents the CLIC physics potential and reports on design, technology, and implementation aspects of the accelerator and the detector. CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments and system tests have resulted in an increased energy efficiency (power around 170 MW) for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate at the level of 6 billion CHF. The detector concept has been refined using improved software tools. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. A wide range of CLIC physics studies has been conducted, both through full detector simulations and parametric studies, together providing a broad overview of the CLIC physics potential. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. The construction of the first CLIC energy stage could start by 2026. To study the mechanisms of beam halo formation and its dynamics, a YAG/OTR monitor has been developed and tested at the KEK-ATF. The monitor has four ceramic Ce:YAG screens for the visualization of the beam core and beam halo and an OTR target to provide complementary measurements of beam core. A high dynamic range (DNR>10⁵) and a high resolution (10 um) have been demonstrated through the optimization of light detection, reduction of background and suppression of scintillation saturation. Measurements using this monitor are consistent with previous results and theoretical modeling of beam halo at ATF, and have allowed further progress in the characterization of the driving mechanisms., Proceedings of the 7\textsuperscript{th} Int. With a low emittance and short-bunch electron beam at a high repetition rate realized by a superconducting linac, stimulated excitation of an optical cavity at the terahertz spectrum range has been shown. The electron beam passed through small holes in the cavity mirrors without being destroyed. A sharp resonance structure which indicated wide-band stimulated emission via coherent diffraction radiation was observed while scanning the round-trip length of the cavity.

We investigated a corrugated mm-scale capillary as a compact accelerating structure in the driver-witness acceleration scheme, and suggested a methodology to measure the acceleration of the witness bunch. The accelerating fields produced by the driver bunch and the energy spread of the witness bunch in a corrugated capillary and in a capillary with a constant inner radius were measured and simulated for both on-axis and off-axis beam propagation. Our simulations predicted a change in the accelerating field structure for the corrugated capillary. Also, an approximately twofold increase of the witness bunch energy gain on the first accelerating cycle was expected for both capillaries for the off-axis beam propagation. These results were confirmed in the experiment, and the maximum measured acceleration of $170\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{keV}/\mathrm{m}$ at 20 pC driver beam charge was achieved for off-axis beam propagation. The driver bunch showed an increase in energy spread of up to 11%, depending on the capillary geometry and beam propagation, with a suppression of the longitudinal energy spread in the witness bunch of up to 15%.

In this paper, numerical estimation and Monte Carlo simulations of this process at the ATF of KEK are presented. Experimental measurements of beam halo in the ATF2 beam line using a diamond sensor detector are also described, which clearly demonstrates the influence of the beam-gas scattering process on the transverse halo distribution.

Micro-bunched particle beams are used for a wide range of research including tunable sources of THz radiation. In most of the applications accurate and non-destructive monitoring of the bunch-to-bunch separation is required. We present the results of proof-of-principle experiments on measuring the distance between two micro-bunches via the analysis of the coherent Smith-Purcell signal amplitude modulation. The proposed monitor can be used to provide feedback to control the sum-millimeter distances between the femtosecond long micro-bunches to stabilize the operation of a THz oscillator or to position the witness bunch into the right phase of the wakefield.

Beam driven dielectric wakefield accelerators (DWAs) [*] typically operate in the terahertz frequency range, which pushes the plasma breakdown threshold for surface electric fields into the multi GV/m range. DWA technique allows one to accommodate a significant amount of charge per bunch, and opens access to conventional fabrication techniques for the accelerating structures. Resonant excitation of coherent Cherenkov radiation in DWA by a multi-bunch beam was used for selective resonant mode excitation [**] and enhancement of accelerating wakefield [***]. We investigate the resonant excitation of Cherenkov Smith-Purcell radiation [****] in a corrugated cylindrical waveguide by a multi-bunch electron beam. The accelerating field is calculated using Particle in Cell simulations and some basic post-processing is done in order to estimate the possible enhancement of the accelerating field. The development of a compact light source facility, Delhi Light Source (DLS), based on a pre-bunched free electron laser, has been initiated at Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC).* A photocathode-based normal conducting RF gun will generate a low-emittance 'comb' electron beam with a maximum energy of ~8 MeV which when injected into ~ 1.5 metre compact undulator magnet (~0.4 < K_{rms} < ~2) will produce intense THz radiation in the frequency range of 0.15 THz to 3.0 THz.** Each microbunch of the electron beam is expected to emit super-radiant radiation, and an enhancement in the overall spectral power can be achieved if the frequency (inverse of the spatial separation) of the electron microbunches coincides with that of the THz radiation being emitted. There will be provisions to vary the spatial separation between the successive microbunches of the 'comb' beam so that by varying the undulator magnetic field and/or electron energy, the THz frequency range can be tuned. The results of the beam optics for the entire range of frequencies mentioned above along with the detailed information of the radiation to be generated from the facility will be presented in the paper., Proceedings of the 38th Int. Quasi-monochromatic X-rays with high brightness have a broad range of applications in fields such as life sciences, bio-, medical applications, and microlithography. One method for generating such X-rays is via inverse Compton scattering (ICS). X-ray generation experiments using ICS were carried out at the superconducting RF test facility (STF) accelerator at KEK. A new beam line, newly developed four-mirror optical cavity system, and new X-ray detector system were prepared for experiments downstream section of the STF electron accelerator. Amplified pulsed photons were accumulated into a four-mirror optical cavity and collided with an incoming 40 MeV electron beam. The generated X-rays were detected using a microchannel plate (MCP) detector for X-ray yield measurements and a new silicon-on-insulator (SOI) detector system for energy measurements. The detected X-ray yield by the MCP detector was 1756.8±272.2 photons/(244 electron bunches). To extrapolate this result to 1 ms train length under 5 Hz operations, 4.60×10 5 photons/1%-bandwidth were obtained. The peak X-ray energy, which was confirmed by the SOI detector, was 29 keV, and this is consistent with ICS X-rays.

Micro-bunched particle beams are used for a wide range of research including wakefield-based particle acceleration and tunable sources of radiation. In all applications, accurate and non-destructive monitoring of the bunch-to-bunch separation is required. With the development of femtosecond lasers, the generation of micro-bunched beams directly from a photocathode becomes routine; however, non-destructive monitoring of the separation is still a challenge. We present the results of proof-of-principle experiments conducted at the Laser Undulator Compact X-ray accelerator measuring the distance between micro-bunches via the amplitude modulation analysis of a monochromatic radiation signal. Good agreement with theoretical predictions is shown; limitations and further improvements are discussed.

For Accelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2), as well as other high-intensity accelerators, beam halo has been an important aspect reducing the machine performance and activating the components. It is imperative to clearly understand the mechanisms that lead to halo formation and to test the avail- able theoretical models with an adequate experiment setup. In this paper, the experimental measurement of the beam halo formation from beam gas scattering is presented. Optical Transition Radiation (OTR) appearing when a charged particle crosses a boundary between two media with different dielectric properties has widely been used as a tool for transverse profile measurements of charged particle beams in numerous facilities worldwide. The resolution of the conventional monitors is defined by the dimensions of the Point Spread Function (PSF) distribution, i.e. the source distribution generated by a single electron and projected by an optical system onto a detector. The PSF form significantly depends on various parameters of the optical system like diffraction of the OTR tails, spherical and chromatic aberrations. The beam image is a convolution of the PSF with a transverse electron distribution in a beam. In our experiment we designed and built a system that can measure the transverse electron beam size through the analysis of the PSF distribution shape. In this paper we present the hardware, data analysis, calibration technique, a discussion on the main source of uncertainties and initial measurements of a micron-scale electron beam size with sub-micrometre resolution.

To obtain high-brightness quasi-monochromatic X-rays via inverse Compton scattering (ICS), an optical cavity for intensifying laser beams was designed and implemented in a new beam line at the KEK Superconducting RF Test Facility (STF) accelerator. The optical cavity adopts a planar configuration consisting of 4 mirrors. This confocal type resonator provides stable laser storage even with a long mirror distance, enabling head-on collision with the electron beams. To overcome the well-known astigmatism problems of the planar-type optical cavity, two forcibly bendable cylindrical mirrors were introduced instead of flat mirrors. With this new function for laser profile adjustment, an almost round laser profile at the waist point in the accelerator environment was successfully achieved. Estimated waist sizes were 43.7 μm for the horizontal and 50.8 μm for the vertical dimensions. The feedback control of this 4-mirror optical cavity worked with a stiff plate supporting all 4 mirrors. 1.7×10 3 finesse and 2.8-kW stored power for a 1-ms duration with 5 Hz were achieved.

Investigation of coherent Smith-Purcell Radiation (SPR) spectral characteristics was performed both experimentally and by numerical simulation. The measurement of SPR spectral line shapes of different diffraction orders was carried out at KEK LUCX facility. A pair of room-temperature Schottky barrier diode (SBD) detectors with sensitivity bands of $60-90$~GHz and $320-460$~GHz was used in the measurements. Reasonable agreement of experimental results and simulations performed with CST Studio Suite justifies the use of different narrow-band SBD detectors to investigate different SPR diffraction orders. It was shown that monochromaticity of the SPR spectral lines increases with diffraction order. The comparison of coherent transition radiation and coherent SPR intensities in sub-THz frequency range showed that the brightnesses of both radiation mechanisms were comparable. The conceptual design for a single-shot longitudinal bunch profile monitor using coherent Smith-Purcell radiation (cSPr) has recently been completed. The exploitation of the directionality and the polarization of cSPr to reduce the length of the monitor and to eliminate background radiation are discussed. The linear polarization of cSPr will be used to separate the signal from background radiation and experiments to test this design will be presented. Alongside the conceptual design an investigation to optimize the number of detection channels needed to produce high quality longitudinal bunch profile reconstructions has been carried out. It has been determined that the number of detection channels can be reduced compared to previous experiments if measurement uncertainty and background radiation are minimized effectively., Proceedings of the 8th Int. We study a bright THz light source generated by a wiggler radiation at KEK LUCX THz experiment, where an injected four pre-micro-bunched electron beam with few hundreds femto-seconds separation plays a crucial role. The energy of pre-bunched beam reaches few MeV at an S-band 3.6 cell RF Gun, and hence the space-charge effect is not negligible. We simulate the beam optics by ASTRA code, a charged beam optics simulator with space-charge effect, and then the resultant particle distribution is passed to GENESIS, a FEL simulator to deal with the wiggler radiation. We also present an experimental result at KEK LUCX. In this report we present experimental investigations of THz radiation generated from a corrugated and a non-corrugated capillary with reflectors, using a femtosecond electron beam of LUCX accelerator at KEK, Japan. We discuss measurements of radiation angular distributions and their comparison with Particle In Cell simulations, and also investigate an off-central propagation of the beam in the capillaries based on experimental measurements and simulations., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

In this paper, we investigate a corrugated mm-scale capillary as a compact accelerating structure in a drive-witness acceleration scheme, and suggest a methodology to measure acceleration of a witness bunch. Two typical measurements and the energy gain in a witness bunch as a function of the distance between bunches are discussed. An Energy Recovery Linac can produce a low emittance and short bunch beam at a high repetition rate. A test accelerator, compact-ERL, has been operating in KEK for development works of technologies related to ERL and CW-Superconducting accelerators. In a special beam operation mode of bunch compression, a short bunch beam of ~150 fs at the repetition rate of CW 1.3 GHz can be realized in the return-loop. One of the promising applications of such a short bunch beam is a high power THz radiation source produced by a coherent radiation. When a charged particle beam passes close to a conductive target, a radiation called diffraction radiation is produced. If the target mirrors form an optical cavity which fundamental frequency matches the repetition frequency of the beam, the radiation resonates in the cavity, resulting in extracting a huge radiation power determined by the loss of the cavity. We plan to perform an experiment of the resonant coherent diffraction mechanism in the return-loop of the compact-ERL to test the feasibility to be a wide band high power THz source. A compact prototype four-mirror optical cavity is being constructed at KEK-ATF to measure lowemittance electron beams in the damping ring. Four-mirror-resonators reduce the sensitivity to the misalignment of mirrors in comparison to two mirror-resonators. The aspect ratio is important when constructing a compact resonator with a very small beam waist of less than 5 mm. The total cavity length of a four-mirror resonator is matched according to the pulse repetition of mode-locked laser oscillator. Minimum beam waist is obtained in the sagittal plane using an IR pulsed laser. The advantage of such types of compact four-mirror-resonators is the total scanning time for measurement of the beam profile is much shorter in comparison to a CW laser wire system. By using a pulsed green laser that has been converted to the second harmonics from an IR pulsed laser, a minimum beam waist that has half the beam waist when using an IR laser oscillator can be obtained. Therefore, it is possible to obtain the beam waist of less than 5 m m( s value) that is required for effective photon–electron collision. We report on the development and performance studies for such types of compact fourmirror laser wire systems.

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a multi-TeV high-luminosity linear e+e- collider under development. For an optimal exploitation of its physics potential, CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in a staged approach with three centre-of-mass energy stages ranging from a few hundred GeV up to 3 TeV. The first stage will focus on precision Standard Model physics, in particular Higgs and top-quark measurements. Subsequent stages will focus on measurements of rare Higgs processes, as well as searches for new physics processes and precision measurements of new states, e.g. states previously discovered at LHC or at CLIC itself. In the 2012 CLIC Conceptual Design Report, a fully optimised 3 TeV collider was presented, while the proposed lower energy stages were not studied to the same level of detail. This report presents an updated baseline staging scenario for CLIC. The scenario is the result of a comprehensive study addressing the performance, cost and power of the CLIC accelerator complex as a function of centre-of-mass energy and it targets optimal physics output based on the current physics landscape. The optimised staging scenario foresees three main centre-of-mass energy stages at 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV for a full CLIC programme spanning 22 years. For the first stage, an alternative to the CLIC drive beam scheme is presented in which the main linac power is produced using X-band klystrons. The KEK Accelerator test facility (ATF) extraction line laser-wire system has recently been upgraded allowing the measurement of micron scale transverse size electron beams. We report on the hardware upgrades, including focusing lens, laser diagnostics and mechanical systems. The first measurements using the new system from recent operation at the ATF are presented.

The demand for the photon beams for basic research is growing in India. To address the requirements, a project to develop a compact Light Source based on the principle of Free Electron Laser has been initiated at the Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC). In the first phase of the project, a normal conducting RF gun will be used to produce electron beam of energy ~ 8 MeV by using copper photocathode and subsequently by Cs2Te photocathode. A high power fiber laser with short pulse length is planned to be used to produce the pre-bunched electron beam by splitting the single laser pulse in to 16 pulses ("comb beam"). The electron beam will be injected in to a compact, variable gap undulator magnet to produce the THz radiation whose frequency can be tuned by varying the undulator field strength and the time separation of the comb beam. In the second and third phases of the project, superconducting RF gun and superconducting accelerating structure will be used to increase the energy of the electron beam up to ~ 40 MeV which will be used to produce IR radiation by using long undulator magnets and to produce X-rays by colliding the electron beam with another high power laser beam., Proceedings of the 7th Int. A fast room temperature microwave detection system based on the Schottky Barrier-diode detector was created at the KEK ATF (Accelerator Test Facility). It was tested using Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) generated by the 1.28 GeV electron beam in the damping ring. The speed performance of the detection system was checked by observing the CSR from a multi-bunch (2.8 ns bunch separation time) beam. The theoretical estimations of CSR power yield from an edge of bending magnet as well as new injection tuning method are presented. A very high sensitivity of CSR power yield to the longitudinal electron distribution in a bunch is discussed.

Optical transition radiation (OTR) has become a commonly used method for 2D beam imaging measurements. In the Accelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2) at KEK, beam sizes smaller than the OTR point spread function have been measured. Simulations of the OTR imaging system have been performed using the ZEMAX software to study the effects of optical errors such as aberrations, diffraction, and misalignments of optical components. This paper presents a comparison of simulations of the OTR point spread function with experimental data obtained at ATF2. It shows how the quantification and control of optical errors impacts on optimizing the resolution of the system. We also show that the OTR point spread function needs to be predicted accurately to optimize any optical system and to predict the error made on measurement.

Using the pre-bunched electron beam of 5 MeV linear accelerator the coherent Smith–Purcell radiation (CSPR) from a flat periodic target (made of conductive layers separated by dielectric gaps) in millimeter wavelength region has been investigated. The angular distribution of this radiation was measured with a narrow-band detector and experimental data agree with our theoretical calculations for similar kind of targets. Such properties of Smith–Purcell radiation as strong dependence of radiation wavelength on the observation angle overlapping with coherent radiation effect may be used for a noninvasive bunch length measurement. The possibility of using the room temperature detectors for single bunch measurements is demonstrated.

The design of free-electron lasers (FELs) based on submillimeter-range undulators involves difficulties associated with the fabrication of undulators with a very small period. To do this also requires accelerators with high-energy electron beams (>50 MeV). It should also be taken into account that these facilities use precision and expensive magnetic systems. In some works, an alternative FEL mechanism based on the use of the Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) was considered. To realize the feedback in such an FEL, one must use a basically different cavity scheme. This work reports the results of experimental study on the stimulated SPR in a “transverse” cavity.

We present the first-principles theory of Smith-Purcell effect from the concave dotted grating consisting of bent chains of separated micro- or nanoparticles. The numerical analysis demonstrates that the obtained spectral-angular distributions change significantly depending on the structure of the grating.

An energy recovery linac test accelerator, cERL, has been developing at KEK. It can produce a high repetition rate short bunched electron beam in a continuous operation mode. We propose to develop a high power THz radiation source at the return loop of the cERL. Coherent diffraction radiation of THz regime is emitted when an electron bunch passes through a conductive mirror with a beam hole at the center. If we form an optical cavity using two mirrors facing each other and the cavity length coincides with the bunch repetition rate, the coherent diffraction radiation of multiple bunches adds up coherently in the cavity. By extracting the power through transmission of one of the mirrors, we can realize a high power and high efficiency THz source. Success in design and construction of a compact, high-brightness accelerator system is strongly related to the production of ultra-short electron beams. Recently, the approach to generate short electron bunches or pre-bunched beams in RF guns directly illuminating a high quantum efficiency semiconductor photocathode with femtosecond laser pulses has become attractive. The measurements of the photocathode response time in this case are essential. With an approach of the interferometer-type pulse splitter deep integration into a commercial Ti:Sa laser system used for RF guns, it has become possible to generate pre-bunched electron beams and obtain continuously variable electron bunch separation. In combination with a well-known zero-phasing technique, it allows us to estimate the response time of the most commonly used Cs2Te photocathode. It was demonstrated that the peak-to-peak rms time response of Cs2Te is of the order of 370 fs, and thereby, it is possible to generate and control a THz sequence of relativistic electron bunches by a conventional S-band RF gun. This result can also be applied for investigation of other cathode materials and electron beam temporal shaping and further opens a possibility to construct wide-range tunable, table-top THz free electron laser.

A theoretical model and results of experiments on optical polarization radiation of relativistic electrons from conducting targets performed on the synchrotron and microtron of Nuclear Physics Institute at Tomsk Polytechnic University are reported. The measurements of spectral characteristics of resonance polarization radiation in periodic targets over a wide range of electron energies (both in the Smyth–Purcell geometry and for different angles between the targets and the direction of the electron beam) show reasonable agreement with theoretical estimates.

TUCYB2; Laser-Compton scattering has become an important technique for beam diagnostics of the latest accelerators. In order to develop technologies for low emittance beams, an Accelerator Test facility (ATF) was built at KEK. It consists of an electron linac, a damping ring in which beam emittance is reduced, and an extraction line. For emittance measurement we are developing a new type of beam profile monitor which works on the principle of inverse Compton scattering between electron and laser light. In order to achieve effective collision of photon and electron, a pulsed and very thin size laser is required. Laser wire is one technique of measuring a small beam size. With green lasers, which are converted to second harmonics from IR pulsed laser, minimumbeam waist is half of the beam waist obtained using infrared (IR) laser oscillator. Therefore, it is possible to obtain beam waist less than 5 &m using green laser pulse, which is required for effective photon-electron collision. First, pulsed IR seed laser is amplified with 1.5 meter long PCF based amplifier system. This pulsed IR laser is converted to second harmonics with a non-linear crystal. Pulsed green laser is injected inside four mirror optical cavity to obtain very small beam waist at interaction point (IP). Using a pulsed compact laser wire, we can measure 10 um electron beams in vertical directions. We report the development of the pulsed green laser and parameters of compact four mirror optical cavity for effective inverse Compton scattering.
