The future high luminosity (Hi-Lumi) upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will include eight (plus two spares) 10.2 m-long Cryo-assemblies which will be components of the triplets for two LHC insertion regions. Each cold mass in the Cryo-assemblies will consist of two 4.2 m-long Nb3Sn high gradient quadrupole magnets, designated MQXFA, with aperture 150 mm and operating gradient 132.2 T/m, for a total of twenty magnets. Before assembling and testing the final cold masses at Fermilab, the component quadrupoles are being tested first at the vertical superconducting magnet test facility of the Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), in superfluid He at 1.9 K and up to 18.0 kA, in accordance with operational requirements of the LHC. The tests of the first two full-length prototype quadrupole magnets MQXFAP1 and MQXFAP2 at BNL have been reported previously. The first two pre-series magnets, the first two that will be used in the LHC, have also now been tested. This paper reports on the quench test and training results of these two magnets. The test results of these magnets will be important for validating the final MQXFA design for operational magnets.

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, together with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, is building a new High Field Vertical Magnet Test Facility (HFVMTF) to be situated in the Magnet Test Facility at Fermilab. The HFVMTF is jointly funded by the US DOE Offices of Science, High Energy Physics, and Fusion Energy Sciences, and will serve as a superconducting cable test facility for both communities. The background magnetic field for test samples is 15 T and will be produced by a magnet provided by LBNL operating at 1.9 K in superfluid helium. The samples will be placed in the background magnetic field, cooled to between 4.5 K and a user-specified upper limit, and will be powered with a superconducting transformer at up to 100 kA. Additionally, this facility will be used to test high-field superconducting magnet models and demonstrators, including hybrid magnets, produced by the US Magnet Development Program. Currently, the various tasks of the project are at different stages of execution, from conceptual to ready-for-construction designs. This paper describes the parameters and design status of the pit construction, cryostat, heat exchanger, lambda plate, power system, and quench protection and monitoring systems of the facility.

The timing characteristics of scintillators must be understood in order to determine which applications they are appropriate for. Polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) and polyethylene teraphthalate (PET) are common plastics with uncommon scintillation properties. Here, we report the timing characteristics of PEN and PET, determined by exciting them with 120 GeV protons. The test beam was provided by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, and the scintillators were tested at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility. PEN and PET are found to have dominant decay constants of 34.91 ns and 6.78 ns, respectively., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The magnet system of the Muon to electron (Mu2e) experiment at Fermilab consists of three solenoid magnets: the Production Solenoid (PS), the Transport Solenoid (TS), and the Detector Solenoid (DS). The S-shaped TS contains 52 coils grouped into modules, which are typically 2 coils shrink fitted into Al shells. These modules are further grouped into units made of 1-3 modules. As part of the acceptance process for these units, the magnetic center of all coils and critical dimensions of the Al shells are measured. The magnetic model is updated with these as-built values to ensure the magnetic requirements for the experiment are met. In addition, units are tested to 120% of nominal current at liquid helium temperatures to study quench performance and splice resistance. Results from the first units will be presented.

The US Accelerator Upgrade for the HiLumi-LHC (US-HL-LHC AUP) project and CERN are designing and fabricating superconducting quadrupole magnets for the interaction regions of the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The triplet is made of three optical elements: Q1, Q2, and Q3. The Nb3Sn quadrupole magnets operate in superfluid He at 1.9 K with a nominal field gradient of 132.6 T/m. The three inner triplet elements are connected together with superconducting buses. The design and fabrication of the through and local buses is carried out at Applied Physics and Superconducting Technology Division (APS-TD) at Fermilab (FNAL). This paper reports the characterization of the bus-bar thermo-electric properties. The bus was tested with a short Nb3Sn magnet (MQXFS1e) in the vertical test facility of the APS-TD at FNAL. The test demonstrated that the bus design is adequate since no spontaneous quench took place up to 17.89 kA current value. Quench propagation velocities were investigated over a range of currents that is typical for accelerator superconducting magnets. Temperature margins were found above that required for the Hi-Lumi triplet bus. The design guarantees the protection of the bus at operational current value according to the quench detection voltage threshold (100 mV) established for the Hi-Lumi LHC interaction region.

At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collider, high-mass electron-neutrino ($e\nu$) pairs are produced predominantly in the process $p \bar{p} \rightarrow W(\rightarrow e\nu) + X$. The asymmetry of the electron and positron yield as a function of their pseudorapidity constrain the slope of the ratio of the $u$- to $d$-quark parton distributions versus the fraction of the proton momentum carried by the quarks. This paper reports on the measurement of the electron-charge asymmetry using the full data set recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 2001--2011 and corresponding to 9.1~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The measurement significantly improves the precision of the Tevatron constraints on the parton-distribution functions of the proton. Numerical tables of the measurement are provided.

The role and mitigation of space charge effects are important aspects of the beam physics research to be performed at the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) at Fermilab. The impact of nonlinear integrability (partial and complete) on space charge driven incoherent and coherent resonances will be a new feature of this accelerator and has the potential to influence the design of future low energy proton synchrotrons. In this report we model transverse space charge effects using the PIC code pyORBIT. First we benchmark the single particle tracking results against MADX with checks on symplecticity, tune footprints, and dynamic aperture in a partially integrable lattice realized with a special octupole string insert. Our space charge calculations begin with an examination of the 4D symplecticity. Short term tracking is done first with the initial bare lattice and then with a matching of the rms values with space charge. Next, we explore slow initialization of charge as a technique to establish steady state and reduce emittance growth and beam loss following injection into a mismatched lattice. We establish values of space charge simulation parameters so as to ensure numerical convergence. Finally, we compare the simulated space charge induced tune shifts and footprints against theory.

We study the sensitivity of the Fermilab Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) experiments, MicroBooNE, ICARUS, and SBND, to MeV- to GeV-scale inelastic dark matter interacting through a dark photon mediator. These models provide interesting scenarios of light thermal dark matter, which, while challenging to probe with direct and indirect detection experiments, are amenable to accelerator-based searches. We consider production of the dark sector states with both the Fermilab Booster 8 GeV and NuMI 120 GeV proton beams and study the signatures of scattering and decay of the heavy excited dark state in the SBN detectors. These distinct signatures probe complementary regions of parameter space. All three experiments will be able to cover new ground, with an excellent near-term opportunity to search for cosmologically motivated targets explaining the observed dark matter abundance., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

We analyze data triggered in time with the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beam spill, with an exposure of 1.93 x 10(20) protons on target. We look for monoenergetic scalars that come from the direction of the NuMI hadron absorber, at a distance of 100 m from the detector, and decay to electron-positron pairs. We observe one candidate event, with a standard model background prediction of 1.9 +/- 0.8. We set an upper limit on the scalar-Higgs mixing angle of theta < (3.3 - 4.6) x 10(-4) at the 95% confidence level for scalar boson masses in the range (100-200) MeV/c(2). We exclude, at the 95% confidence level, the remaining model parameters required to explain the central value of a possible excess of K-L(0) -> pi(0)nu(nu) over bar decays reported by the KOTO collaboration. We describe a method for precisely regulating the gradient magnet power supply at the Fermilab Booster accelerator complex using a neural network trained via reinforcement learning. We demonstrate preliminary results by training a surrogate machine-learning model on real accelerator data to emulate the Booster environment, and using this surrogate model in turn to train the neural network for its regulation task. We additionally show how the neural networks to be deployed for control purposes may be compiled to execute on field-programmable gate arrays. Any observation of charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) implies the existence of new physics beyond the SM in charged lepton sector. CLFV interactions may also contribute to the muon magnetic moment and explain the discrepancy between the SM prediction and the recent muon $g-2$ precision measurement at Fermilab. We consider the most general SM gauge invariant Lagrangian of $\Delta L=0$ bileptons with CLFV couplings and investigate the interplay of low-energy precision experiments and colliders in light of the muon magnetic moment anomaly. We go beyond previous work by demonstrating the sensitivity of the LHC, the MACE experiment, a proposed muonium-antimuonium conversion experiment, and a muon collider. Calabazas Creek Research, Inc. (CCR), in collaboration with Fermilab and Communications and Power Industries, LLC (CPI), developed a 100-kW peak, 10-kW average, 1300-MHz, magnetron-based, RF system with amplitude and phase control for driving accelerators. Phase locking was achieved using an approach originated at Fermilab that uses phase modulation of the locking signal to control the amplitude and phase into a superconducting cavity on a fast time scale. Experimental results, including demonstration of phase locking and amplitude control, are reported.

The present Fermilab proton Booster is an early example of a rapid-cycling synchrotron (RCS). Built in 1960s, it features a design in which the combined-function dipole magnets serve as vacuum chambers. Such a design is quite cost-effective, and it does not have the limitations associated with the eddy currents in a metallic vacuum chamber. However, an important drawback of that design is a high impedance, as seen by a beam, because of the magnet laminations. More recent RCS designs (e.g. J-PARC) employ large and complex ceramic vacuum chambers in order to mitigate the eddy-current effects and to shield the beam from the magnet laminations. Such a design, albeit very successful, is quite costly because it requires large-bore magnets and large-bore RF cavities. In this paper, we consider an RCS concept with a thin-wall metallic vacuum chamber as a compromise between the chamber-less Fermilab Booster design and the large-bore design with ceramic chambers.

The new LCLS-II Superconducting Linear Accelerator Cryomodules are under construction at Fermilab. Installed inside each Super Conducting Radio Frequency (SCRF) Cryomodule is a superconducting magnet package to focus and steer an electron beam. The iron-dominated magnet package has conductively cooled racetrack-type coils with both quadrupole and dipole windings. For ease of installation, the magnet is splittable in the vertical plane. To confirm magnet specifications, we performed a quality acceptance in a liquid helium bath for quench testing, and we performed high-precision magnetic field measurements. The magnetic and mechanical center alignment was investigated using the vibrating wire technique. Several prototypes and all production units have been tested. This paper summarizes the magnetic measurements and quench test results of all tested units, including comparison of performance and repeatability between different units.

SOI detector SOFIST is a pixel sensor optimized for the International Linear Collider vertex detector. SOFIST stores both position and timing information of charged particles. Our aim is to achieve 3 μ m single-point resolution with a 20 × 20 μ m 2 pixel. The first prototype sensor SOFIST Ver.1 was evaluated with a 120 GeV proton beam at the FermiLab Test Beam Facility. The position resolution was about 1.3 μ m . We are currently evaluating the next version of sensor, SOFIST Ver.2, which has an in-pixel comparator and timestamp.

This paper presents expected THz radiation spectra emitted by micro-bunched electron beams produced using a slit-mask placed within a magnetic chicane in the FAST (Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology) electron injector at Fermilab. Our purpose is to generate tunable narrow-band THz radiation with a simple scheme in a conventional photo-injector. Using the slit-mask in the chicane, we create a longitudinally micro-bunched beam after the chicane by transversely slicing an energy chirped electron bunch at a location with horizontal dispersion. In this paper, we discuss the theory related to the micro-bunched beam structure, the beam optics, the simulation results of the micro-bunched beam and the bunching factors. Energy radiated at THz frequencies from two sources: coherent transition radiation and from a wiggler is calculated and compared. We also discuss the results of a simple method to observe the micro-bunching on a transverse screen monitor using a skew quadrupole placed in the chicane., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures

We describe the installation, commissioning, and characterization of the new injection kicker system in the Muon $g-2$ Experiment (E989) at Fermilab, which makes a precision measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly. Three Blumlein pulsers drive each of the 1.27-m-long non-ferric kicker magnets, which reside in a storage ring vacuum (SRV) that is subjected to a 1.45 T magnetic field. The new system has been redesigned relative to Muon $g-2$'s predecessor experiment, and we present those details in this manuscript.

The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) has measured the muon anomalous precession frequency $\omega_a$ to an uncertainty of 434 parts per billion (ppb), statistical, and 56 ppb, systematic, with data collected in four storage ring configurations during its first physics run in 2018. When combined with a precision measurement of the magnetic field of the experiment's muon storage ring, the precession frequency measurement determines a muon magnetic anomaly of $a_{\mu}({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.46 ppm). This article describes the multiple techniques employed in the reconstruction, analysis and fitting of the data to measure the precession frequency. It also presents the averaging of the results from the eleven separate determinations of \omega_a, and the systematic uncertainties on the result., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures. Detrimental beam dynamics effects limit the performance of high-intensity rapid cycling synchrotrons (RCSs) such as the 8 GeV proton Fermilab Booster. Here we report the results of comprehensive experimental studies of various beam intensity dependent effects in the Booster. In the first part, we report the dependencies of the Booster beam intensity losses on the total number of protons per pulse and on key operational parameters, such as the machine tunes and chromaticities. Then we cross check two methods of the beam emittance measurements (the MultiWires proportional chambers and the ionization profile monitors). Finally, we used the intensity dependent emittance growth effects to analyze the ultimate performance of the machine in the present configuration, with the maximum space-charge tuneshift parameter $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{Q}_{\mathrm{SC}}\ensuremath{\sim}0.6$, and after its injection energy is upgraded from 0.4 to 0.8 GeV.

Electron-cooling offers a relatively simple scheme to enable high-luminosity collisions in future electron-ion and hadron colliders. Contemplated TeV-energy hadron colliders require relativistic (sub 100 MeV) high-charge [${\cal O}(\mbox{nC})$] electron beams with a specific transverse eigenemittance partition. This paper discusses the generation of high-charge ($Q\le 3.2$~nC) 40 MeV electron bunches with eigenemittance partition consistent with requirements associated with electron-cooling option for future electron-ion colliders. The supporting experiment was performed at the FAST facility at FermiLab. The data are compared with numerical simulations and the results discussed in the context of beam requirement for future electron-ion colliders.

The NOvA experiment is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment designed to measure the rates of electron neutrino appearance and muon neutrino disappearance. It uses the NuMI beam that has recently been upgraded to 700 kW as the neutrino beam source. The NOvA Near Detector (ND) is placed onsite at Fermilab, 800 m from the NuMI target while the far detector is placed 810 km away at a site near Ash River, Minnesota, both the detectors being functionally identical and 14.6 mrad off-axis w.r.t the NuMI beam. The primary physics goal of the experiment include precise measurement of \(\theta _{23}\), CP violating phase \(\delta _{CP}\) and the neutrino mass hierarchy. In addition to oscillation physics, the NOvA experiment provides an excellent opportunity to study neutrino-nucleus cross-sections at the ND as it is situated close to the neutrino source and observes an intense rate of neutrino interactions. This work is a proceeding to a talk showing the status of the charged pion production in muon neutrino introduced charged current interactions at the NOvA ND based on the exposure equivalent to \(8.85 \times 10^{20}\) for the neutrino beam using convolutional neural networks (CNN).

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for evidence of charged lepton flavor violation by observing the conversion of a negative muon into an electron in the Coulomb field of a nucleus without emission of neutrinos and will probe effective new-physics mass scales in the 103 􀀀 104 TeV range. One of the main parts of the Mu2e experimental setup is its target station in which negative pions are generated in interactions of the 8 GeV primary proton beam with a tungsten target, which will be capable of producing 2 1017 negative muons per year. Mu2e can be extended by a next generation experiment, Mu2e-II, with a sensitivity improved by another factor of 10 or more as enabled by the PIP-II accelerator upgrade project. PIP-II is a 250-meter-long linac capable of accelerating a 2 mA proton beam to a kinetic energy of 800 MeV corresponding to 1.6 MW of power. To achieve another factor of ten improvement in sensitivity, Mu2e-II will require about 100 kW of proton beam on target, and the added power requires a new target design. We will present our progress in RD of a target station conceptual design for Mu2e-II, using the MARS15 and G4beamline Monte-Carlo codes toward a selection between granular, conveyor, and rotating cylindrical target options.

A search for sterile neutrinos was performed by looking for muon neutrino disappearance using the MINOS/MINOS+ detectors. The two detectors are at baselines of 1.04 km and 735 km from the neutrino production target of the NuMI neutrino beam at Fermilab. The data exposure consists of $10.56 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target from a beam configuration with a neutrino energy distribution peaked at 3 GeV and a further $5.8 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target in a higher energy configuration with a beam peak energy of 7 GeV. A simultaneous analysis of the $\nu_{\mu}$ charged-current and neutral- current neutrino energy spectra in the two detectors, using a $3+1$ sterile neutrino model, yields no evidence of sterile neutrino mixing. A world-leading limit on the sterile mixing angle $\sin^2 \theta_{24}$ is set for many values of the sterile neutrino mass-splitting $\Delta m^2_{41} \gt 10^{-4}\,$eV$^2$. The NuMI target facility produces an intense muon neutrino beam for long baseline neutrino experiments. A muon monitor which measures muon beam profile, is a key beam element to maintain the quality of muon neutrino beam. Three arrays of muon monitors located in the downstream of the hadron absorber provide the measurements of the primary beam quality. We studied the response of muon monitors with the proton beam profile changes and focusing horn current variations. The responses of muon monitors have been used to implement Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to monitor the beam quality. Applications of ML techniques have shown the capabilities of identifying incidents, predicting the beam parameters and horn current with a significant accuracy. I will present the current status, recent results and future plans from our muon monitor data studies.

ICARUS T600 is an experiment that uses the liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber detector. It took data at the underground Laboratori Nazionali Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy. After its successful operation in LNGS, the detector was refurbished at CERN and was moved to Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in the US in 2017. ICARUS T600 will function as the far detector at the Fermilab’s Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program which utilizes Fermilab’s booster beam line with high intensity 8GeV protons for neutrino experiments within the Fermilab campus. The primary goals of ICARUS T600 are addressing the anomalies observed in neutrino measurements and search for sterile neutrinos at low energy regime. The detector is in its final stage of installation, and the commissioning will begin shortly after filling the detector with liquid argon. This report discusses the current status and plan of the experiment for physics data taking, as well as its physics prospects.

Mu2e is a new experiment under construction at Fermilab, which will search for coherent neutrinoless conversion of muons to electrons. In order to reach its projected single-event sensitivity of \(3 \times 10^{-17}\), Mu2e will create the most intense muon beam ever developed, with \(10^{10}\) muons per second stopping in the stopping target. Optimization of this muon beam for Mu2e will be discussed.

The Muon $g\textrm{-}2$ Experiment (E989) at Fermilab has a goal of measuring the muon anomaly ($a_\mu$) with unprecedented precision using positive muons. This measurement is motivated by the difference between the previous Brookhaven $a_\mu$ measurement and Standard Model prediction exceeding three standard deviations, which hints at the possibility of physics beyond the Standard Model. Muons are circulated in a storage ring, and the measurement requires a precise determination of the muon anomalous precession frequency (spin precession relative to momentum) from the resulting decay positron time and energy measurements collected with calorimeters. The average magnetic field seen by the muons needs to be known with high precision, and so the storage ring magnetic field is shimmed to be very uniform and is continually monitored with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probes. Detailed Muon Campus beamline and muon storage ring simulations are also required for quantifying beam dynamics and spin-related systematic effects in the determination of the muon anomalous precession frequency, e.g. muon losses during the measurement window. At the time of the conference, the experiment has recently commenced Run-3, and the release of Run-1 physics results is planned for 2020.

The Muon g-2 experiment measures the anomalous magnetic moment of muon. The previous measurement at Brookhaven National Laboratory, experiment E821, completed in 2001 found a greater than 3σ discrepancy from the predicted value. The new generation Muon g-2 experiment at Fermi National Laboratory is expected to accumulate 21 times more statistics and achieve a factor of four improvement in the precision with an upgraded apparatus and reduced systematic uncertainties. With both improvements from experiments and theoretical calculations, a more precise test of the Standard Model value will be made. The experiment construction was completed and the commissioning run successfully finished in Summer 2017. The physics data taking will begin in early 2018.

Crystals were used at Fermilab accelerators for slow extraction and halo collimation in the Tevatron collider, and for channeling radiation generation experiments at the FAST electron linac facility. Here we overview past experience and major outcomes of these studies and discuss opportunities for new crystal acceleration R&D program.

The potentially realizable beam power at the Fermilab long-baseline neutrino program has motivated a reinvigorated design and optimization effort for a rapid-cycling synchrotron (RCS) intensity upgrade of the Fermilab proton complex. We examine areas of technological development with the potential for high-impact on the Fermilab RCS design - low-loss slip-stacking, advanced neutrino-target R\&D, laser-stripping H$^{-}$ injection, fast-ramping super-ferric magnets, nonlinear integrable optics, electron lens devices, and next-generation halo monitors. A brief overview is given on the Fermilab Accelerator Science \& Technology (FAST) facility, where the latter three technologies will undergo comprehensive beam tests.

Measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment (muon g-2) is a sensitive tool for testing the Standard Model (SM) and searching for new physics. It is an important and complementary tool to probe the high energy frontier. In this talk, I will provide an overview on the Fermilab Muon g-2 experiment, which aims to perform the measurement the muon g-2 with a precision goal of 140 parts per billion, a fourfold improvement over the previous BNL measurement. The first physics run finished in 2018 collecting a data sample with similar size of the BNL measurement. The current experimental status and prospects of the experiment will also be discussed.

In the Fall of 2017, two photon detector designs for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) Far Detector were installed and tested in the TallBo liquid argon (LAr) cryostat at the Proton Assembly (PAB) facility, Fermilab. The designs include two light bars developed at Indiana University and a photon detector based on the ARAPUCA light trap engineered by Colorado State University and Fermilab. The performance of these devices is determined by analyzing 8 weeks of cosmic ray data. The current paper focuses solely on the ARAPUCA device as the performance of the light bars will be reported separately. The paper briefly describes the ARAPUCA concept, the TallBo setup, and focuses on data analysis and results.

We analyze the differences between the $pp$ and $p\bar{p}$ differentia l elastic cross section measurements by the D0 and TOTEM Collaborations at the Tevatron, Fermilab, and the LHC, CERN that lead to a significance larger than 3$\sigma$ of the existence of the colourless $C$-odd three-gluon state, the odderon., Comment: Proceedings of the ICHEP 2020 conference, Prague, Czech Republic (online), 28 July - August 6 2020

Participation of a Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) team in the research program at the Tevatron at Fermilab is described. In their work on the upgraded CDF Run II detector, the emphasis was placed on top quark physics. The JINR team was fully engaged in the data analysis of the CDF experiment, particularly, in measuring the top quark mass in the dilepton and lepton–jet modes, in measuring the top quark charge, and in searching for the Higgs boson. The JINR team made a decisive contribution to the operation of the scintillation counter subsystem of the CDF muon trigger, to the trigger based on the vertex silicon detector for selection of events with secondary vertices and to the preshower detector of the electromagnetic calorimeter. The team was involved in the construction, upgrading, and operation of the system of scintillation counters and developed a system for the online monitoring of their parameters to ensure their effective operation in Run II. The work of the JINR researchers was highly appreciated by the international CDF collaboration.

In the following years the Fermilab Muon Campus will deliver highly polarized muon beams to the storage ring of the Muon g-2 Experiment. The transmission fraction of the storage ring has been shown to depend strongly on the transverse optics of the injected beam. Unfortunately, the current diagnostics in the Muon Campus allow only measurement of the beam configuration space which limits how well propagation can be predicted. This paper demonstrates an experimental technique based on a conventional magnet scan to obtain the Twiss parameters at a point, using only beam profiles such that installation of new equipment is not required. A proof-of-principle experiment is presented which shows that this new method is applicable to the Muon Campus, offering a viable approach to optimization of injection in the Muon g-2 Experiment.

This paper presents X-ray spectra of channeling radiation expected at the FAST (Fermi Accelerator Science and Technology) facility in Fermilab. Our purpose is to produce high brightness quasi-monochromatic X-rays in an energy range from 40 keV to 110 keV. We will use a diamond crystal and low emittance electrons with an energy of around 43 MeV. The quality of emitted X-rays depends on parameters of the electron beam at the crystal. We present simulations of the beam optics for high brightness and high yield operations for a range of bunch charges. We estimate the X-ray spectra including bremsstrahlung background. We discuss how the electron beam distributions after the diamond crystal are affected by channeling. We discuss an X-ray detector system to avoid pile-up effects during high charge operations.

The Accelerator Neutrino Neutron Interaction Experiment (ANNIE) aims to make a unique measurement of neutron yield from neutrino-nucleus interactions and to perform R&D for the next generation of water-based neutrino detectors. In this paper, we characterize beam-induced neutron backgrounds in the experimental hall at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. It is shown that the background levels are sufficiently low to allow the next stage of the experiment to proceed. These measurements are relevant to other Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) experiments located adjacent to ANNIE Hall, where dirt neutrons and sky-shine could present similar backgrounds.

Fermilab, in collaboration with CERN, has developed a double-aperture 11-T Nb3Sn dipole suitable for the high-luminosity LHC upgrade. During 2012–2014, a 2-m-long single-aperture dipole demonstrator and three 1-m-long single-aperture dipole models were fabricated by FNAL and tested at its Vertical Magnet Test Facility. Collared coils from two of the 1-m-long models were then used to assemble the first double-aperture dipole demonstrator. This magnet had extensive testing in 2015–2016, including quench performance, quench protection, and field quality studies. This paper reports the results of measurements of dynamic effects in the single-aperture and double-aperture 11-T Nb 3Sn dipoles and compares them with similar measurements in previous NbTi magnets.

Nb3Sn magnets with a nominal operation field of ∼15 T are being considered for the large hadron collider (LHC) energy upgrade high-energy large hadron collider (HE-LHC) and a post-LHC future circular collider. To demonstrate the feasibility of 15-T accelerator quality dipole magnets, the U.S. magnet development program is developing a single-aperture 15-T Nb3Sn dipole demonstrator based on a 4-layer graded cos-theta coil with 60 mm aperture and cold iron yoke. The main design challenges for 15-T accelerator magnets include large Lorentz forces at this field level. To counteract them, an innovative mechanical structure based on a vertically split iron yoke, locked by large aluminum IC-clamps and supported by a thick stainless steel skin, has been developed at Fermilab. To study the performance of the structure, a parametric multiphysics finite element analysis (FEA) model has been set up. This paper describes the numerical model as well as the results of a sensitivity analysis of the effect of geometrical tolerances and assembly parameters.

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab is designed to search for charged-lepton flavor violation by looking for muon to electron conversions in the field of the nucleus. The concept of the experiment is to generate a low momentum muon beam, stopping the muons in a target and measuring the momentum of the outgoing electrons. The implementation of this approach utilizes a complex magnetic field composed of graded solenoidal and toroidal fields. Monitoring coil movements of the solenoids during cool down and magnet excitation and cool down is needed. A novel design of a Cold Mass Position Monitor System (CMPS) that will be implemented for the Mu2e experiment has been developed and a prototype CMPS has been built and tested. This paper describes the Mu2e Solenoid System CMPS including the description of the calibration, mounting effort and the CMPS DAQ.

The Fermilab Mu2e experiment [1] , [2] , currently under construction at Fermilab, has the goal of measuring the rare process of direct muon to electron conversion in the field of a nucleus. The experiment features three large superconducting solenoids: the production solenoid (PS), the transport solenoid (TS), and the detector solenoid (DS). The TS is an “S-shaped” solenoid that sits in between the PS and the DS producing a magnetic field ranging between 2.5 and 2.0 T. This paper describes the various steps that led to the successful procurement of over 740 km of superconducting wire and 44 km of Al-stabilized Rutherford cable needed to build the 52 coils that constitute the Mu2e TS cold mass. The main cable properties and results of electrical and mechanical test campaigns are summarized and discussed. Critical current measurements of the Al-stabilized cables are presented and compared to expected critical current values as measured on extracted strands from the final cables after chemical etching of the aluminum stabilizer. A robust and reliable approach to cable welding is presented, and the effect of cable bending on the transport current is also investigated and presented.

A total of ten jacketed single-spoke resonators type 1 (SSR1) have been fabricated for Fermilab’ injection experiment (PIP2IT). PIP2IT is a test bed for Fermilab’s future accelerator named proton improvement plan II that is currently under development. SSR1 cavities operate at 325 MHz to accelerate a proton beam at a relative (to speed of light) velocity ( $\beta = 0.22$ ). In this paper, we present Fermilab’s experience in developing those spoke resonators starting from the design and analysis phase, to fabrication and extensive testing to qualify cavities for cryomodule assembly.

A high-brilliance ($\sim10^{24}$~photon.s$^{-1}$.mm$^{-2}$.mrd$^{-2}$/0.1\%) gamma-ray source experiment is currently being planned at Fermilab ($E_\gamma\simeq 1.1$~MeV)~[1]. The source implements a high-repetition-rate inverse Compton scattering by colliding electron bunches formed in a 300-MeV superconducting linac with a high-intensity laser pulse. This paper describes the design rationale along with some of technical challenges associated to producing high-repetition-rate collision. Five solenoid-based focusing lenses designed for use inside the SSR1 cryomodule of the PXIE test stand at Fermilab have been fabricated and tested. In addition to a focusing solenoid, each lens is equipped with a set of windings that generate magnetic field in the transverse plane and can be used in the steering dipole mode or as a skew quadrupole corrector. The lenses will be installed between superconducting cavities in the cryomodule, so getting sufficiently low fringe magnetic field was one of the main design requirements. Beam dynamics simulations indicated a need for high accuracy positioning of the lenses in the cryomodule, which triggered a study towards understanding uncertainties of the magnetic axis position relative to the geometric features of the lens. This report summarizes the efforts towards certification of the lenses, including results of performance tests, fringe field data, and uncertainty of the magnetic axis position.

The Muon g−2 experiment at Fermilab will measure the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon to a precision of 140 ppb, reducing the experimental uncertainty by a factor of 4 compared to the previous measurement at BNL (E821). The measurement technique adopts the storage ring concept used for E821, with magic-momentum muons stored in a highly uniform 1.45 T magnetic dipole field. The spin precession frequency is extracted from an analysis of the modulation of the rate of higher-energy positrons from muon decays, detected by 24 calorimeters and 3 straw tracking detectors. Compared to the E821 experiment, muon beam preparation, storage ring internal hardware, field measuring equipment, and detector and electronics systems are all new or significantly upgraded. Herein, I report on the status of the experiment as of Sept. 2016, presenting the magnetic field uniformity results after the completion of the first round of shimming and outlining the construction progress of the main detector systems.

The muon-to-electron conversion experiment (Mu2e) at Fermilab is designed to explore charged lepton flavor violation. It is composed of three large superconducting solenoids: the production solenoid, the transport solenoid (TS), and the detector solenoid. The TS is formed by two magnets: TS upstream and TS downstream. Each has its own cryostat and power supply. Tolerance sensitivity studies of the position and angular alignment of each coil in this magnet system were performed in the past with the objective to demonstrate that the magnet design meets all the field requirements. The alignment of the cold masses is critical to maximize the transmission of muons and to avoid possible backgrounds that would reduce the sensitivity of the experiment. Each TS magnet cold mass can be individually aligned. In this paper, we discuss the implications of the alignment of the TS cold masses in terms of the displacement of the magnetic center. Consideration of the practical mechanical limits is also presented.
