Abstract

The ALEPH detector at LEP has been used to measure the momentum spectrum and charge ratio of vertical cosmic ray muons underground. The sea-level cosmic ray muon spectrum for momenta up to 2.5 TeV/c has been obtained by correcting for the overburden of 320 meter water equivalent (mwe). The results are compared with Monte Carlo models for air shower development in the atmosphere. From the analysis of the spectrum the total flux and the spectral index of the cosmic ray primaries is inferred. The charge ratio suggests a dominantly light composition of cosmic ray primaries with energies up to 10^15 eV., 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Abstract

CosmoALEPH is an experiment operated in conjunction with the ALEPH detector. The ALEPH experiment took data from 1989 until the year 2000 at the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP) at CERN. It provides, among others, high resolution tracking and calorimetry. CosmoALEPH used this e + e − detector for cosmic ray studies. In addition, six scintillator telescopes were installed in the ALEPH pit and the LEP tunnel. The whole experiment operated underground at a vertical depth of 320 meter water equivalent. Data from ALEPH and the scintillator telescopes provide informaton on the lateral distribution of energetic cosmic ray muons in extensive air showers. The decoherence curve of these remnant air shower muons is sensitive to the chemical composition of primary cosmic rays and to the interaction characteristics of energetic hadrons in the atmosphere. An attempt is made to extract the various interdependencies in describing the propagation of primary and secondary cosmic rays through the atmosphere and the rock overburden, and comparing the data with results from Monte Carlo (MC) calculations. Results on the multiplicity distributions of remnant air shower muons in ALEPH are also compared with expectations based on MC simulations. Data on the cosmic ray muon spectrum and charge ratio up to momenta of 3 TeV/c as obtained with the time projection chamber in ALEPH's strong magnetic field are presented. The large number of events also allowed to unambiguously observe muon tridents and to estimate the cross section for this process.

Abstract

The WA95/CHORUS experiment at CERN is a dedicated nu(mu)-nu(tau) oscillation search experiment. Using the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN-SPS accelerator, with an exposure of 2.4 X 10(19) protons on the target, this experiment will explore the domain of small mixing angles down to sin(2) 2 theta(mu tau) approximate to 3 X 10(-4) for mass differences Delta m(2) > 1 eV(2), more than one order of magnitude better than the current limits. The conceptual design of the CHORUS experiment and data on the detector performances are reported.

Abstract

The ALEPH detector at LEP has been supplemented with five scintillator telescopes to measure the muon component of cosmic ray air showers underground. The emphasis of the present analysis of a new data set is to measure coincidences over distances up to about 1 km which are sensitive to the forward production of hadronic interactions and the chemical composition of primary cosmic rays in the energy range around 1015 eV. First results indicate that the observed decoherence curve of muons is compatible with a light primary composition and the arrival directions of muons show no obvious clustering in galactic coordinates.

Abstract

Test-beam studies of the ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) straw tube performance in terms of electron–pion separation using a time-over-threshold method are described. The test-beam data are compared with Monte Carlo simulations of charged particles passing through the straw tubes of the TRT. For energies below 10 GeV , the time-over-threshold method combined with the standard transition-radiation cluster-counting technique significantly improves the electron–pion separation in the TRT. The use of the time-over-threshold information also provides some kaon–pion separation, thereby significantly enhancing the B-physics capabilities of the ATLAS detector.

The experimental data are compared to theoretical expectations and results from other experiments.

Abstract

Data from a dedicated cosmic ray run of the ALEPH detector were used in a study of muon trident production, i.e., muon pairs produced by muons. Here the overburden and the calorimeters are the target materials while the ALEPH time projection chamber provides the momentum measurements. A theoretical estimate of the muon trident cross section is obtained by developing a Monte Carlo simulation for muon propagation in the overburden and the detector. Two muon trident candidates were found to match the expected theoretical pattern. The observed production rate implies that the nuclear form factor cannot be neglected for muon tridents.

The ALEPH-experiment at the LEP e+e- storage ring at CERN has been used to measure the momentum spectrum of cosmic ray muons. A strong magnetic field of 1.5 Tesla provides the basis of the momentum measurement. About 1.4 Million triggers with single and multiple muon events have been analysed. The obtained muon momentum spectrum and the charge ratio in the range from 80 to 2500 GeV/c is presented. After corrections for energy loss in the overburden the muon spectrum at surface is obtained. The results are compared to results from other experiments.

Abstract

A decommissioned LHC test magnet is being prepared as the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) experiment. The magnet has a field of 9.6 Tesla and length of 10 meters. It is being mounted on a platform to track the sun over ?8\erdeg ; vertically and ?45\erdeg ; , horizontally. A sensitivity in axion-photon coupling g_a^gamma gamma < 5×10-11 GeV^-1 can be reached for ma < 10^-2 eV, and with a gas filled tube can reach g_a gamma gamma < 10^-10 GeV^-1 for axion masses m_a < 2 eV.

The existence of 4th SM family results in an essential enhancement of the gluon fusion channel of Higgs boson production at hadron colliders. In this case, the SM Higgs boson could be seen at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) via the golden mode H->4l even at L_{int} ~ fb^{-1}.

Abstract

The potential for measuring the $W^\prime$WZ coupling with the ATLAS detector at LHC is investigated in this note. Different decay channels are considered and the corresponding discovery limits are estimated. It is shown that, for an integrated luminosity of $300~fb^{-1}$, the $W^\prime~\to~WZ$ channel allows observation of a $W^\prime$ boson with sequential model couplings up to masses of 2.5 TeV.

A first look at the cosmic ray data taken in dedicated runs with the CosmoALEPH experiment shows agreement of under ground muon data with gross features based on expectations from the muon content of extensive air showers in the atmosphere.

Abstract

A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for $\nu_{\mu}~\rightarrow~\nu_{\tau}$ oscillation, has been successfully constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

Abstract

Observation of J/? production by neutrinos in the calorimeter of the CHORUS detector exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band ?µ beam is reported. A spectrum-averaged cross section ?J/? = (6.3 ± 3.0) × 10-41 cm2 is obtained for 20 GeV ? E? ? 200 GeV. The data are compared with the theoretical model based on the QCD Z-gluon fusion mechanism. © 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
