Light emitters are bound to strongly interact with light through enhanced absorption and scattering, which imposes limitations on the design and performance of photonic devices such as solar cells, nanoantennas, and (nano) lasers. Overcoming these limitations forces the use of ineffective nonreciprocity approaches or separation of radiation and scattering in the frequency or time domain. A design that combines the properties of an efficient emitter in one state and the property of being invisible in another state is vital for various applications. In this work, we propose a nanolaser design based on a semiconductor nanoparticle with gain coated by a phase transition material (Sb2S3), switchable between lasing and cloaking (nonscattering) states at the same operating frequency without change in pumping. The operation characteristics of the nanolaser are rigorously investigated. The designed nanolaser can operate with optical or electric pumping and possesses attributes of a thresholdless laser due to the high beta-factor and strong Purcell enhancement in the strongly confined Mie resonance mode. We design a reconfigurable metasurface composed of lasing-cloaking metaatoms that can switch from lasing to a nonscattering state in a reversible manner.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have recently become attractive semiconductor materials for several optoelectronic applications, such as photodetection, light harvesting, phototransistors, light-emitting diodes, and lasers. They are particularly appealing because their bandgap lies in the visible and near-IR range, and they possess strong excitonic resonances, high oscillator strengths, and valley-selective response. Coupling these materials to optical nanocavities enhances the quantum yield of exciton emission, enabling advanced quantum optics and nanophotonic devices. Here, we review state-of-the-art advances on hybrid exciton-polariton structures based on monolayer TMDCs coupled to plasmonic and dielectric nanocavities. We first generally discuss the optical properties of 2D WS2, WSe2, MoS2 and MoSe2 materials, paying special attention to their energy and photoluminescence/absorption spectra, excitonic fine structure, and to the dynamics of exciton formation and valley depolarization. We then discuss light-matter interactions in hybrid exciton-polariton structures. Finally, we focus on weak and strong coupling regimes in monolayer TMDCs-based exciton-polariton systems, envisioning research directions and future opportunities based on this novel material platform.

Two-dimensional semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are extremely attractive materials for optoelectronic applications in the visible and near-IR range. Here, we address for the first time to the best of our knowledge the issue of resonance coupling in hybrid exciton-polariton structures based on single Si nanoparticles coupled to monolayer WS2. We predict a transition from weak to strong coupling regime , with a Rabi splitting energy exceeding 200 meV for a Si nanoparticle covered by monolayer WS 2 at the magnetic optical Mie resonance. This large transition is achieved due to the symmetry of magnetic dipole Mie mode and by changing the surrounding dielectric material from air to water. The prediction is based on the experimental estimation of TMDC dipole moment variation obtained from measured photoluminescence (PL) spectra of WS2 monolayers in different solvents. An ability of such a system to tune the resonance coupling is realized experimentally for optically resonant spherical Si nanoparticles placed on a WS2 monolayer. The Rabi splitting energy obtained for this scenario increases from 49.6 meV to 86.6 meV after replacing air by water. Our findings pave the way to develop high-efficiency optoelectronic, nanophotonic and quantum optical devices.

High-index dielectric nanoparticles have become a powerful platform for modern light science, enabling various fascinating applications, especially in nonlinear nanophotonics for which they enable special types of optical nonlinearity, such as electron-hole plasma photoexcitation, which are not inherent to plasmonic nanostructures. Here, we propose a novel geometry for highly tunable all-dielectric nanoantennas, consisting of a chain of silicon nanoparticles excited by an electric dipole source, which allows tuning their radiation properties via electron-hole plasma photoexcitation. We show that the slowly guided modes determining the Van Hove singularity of the nanoantenna are very sensitive to the nanoparticle permittivity, opening up the ability to utilize this effect for efficient all-optical modulation. We show that by pumping several boundary nanoparticles with relatively low intensities may cause dramatic variations in the nanoantenna radiation power patterns and Purcell factor. We also demonstrate that ultrafast pumping of the designed nanoantenna allows unidirectional launching of surface plasmon-polaritons, with interesting implications for modern nonlinear nanophotonics.

Photoconductive antennas are promising sources of terahertz radiation that is widely used for spectroscopy, characterization, and imaging of biological objects, deep space studies, scanning of surfaces, and detection of potentially hazardous substances. These antennas are compact and allow for generation of both ultrabroadband pulses and tunable continuous wave terahertz signals at room temperatures, with no need for high-power optical sources. However, such antennas have relatively low energy conversion efficiency of femtosecond laser pulses or two close pump wavelengths (photomixers) into the pulsed and continuous terahertz radiation, correspondingly. Recently, an approach to solving this problem that involves known methods of nanophotonics applied to terahertz photoconductive antennas and photomixers has been proposed. This approach comprises the use of optical nanoantennas for enhancing the absorption of pump laser radiation in the antenna gap, reducing the lifetime of photoexcited carriers, and improving the antenna thermal efficiency. This Review is intended to systematize the main results obtained by researchers in this promising field of hybrid optical-to-terahertz photoconductive antennas and photomixers. We summarize the main results on hybrid THz antennas, compare the approaches to their implementation, and offer further perspectives of their development including an application of all-dielectric nanoantennas instead of plasmonic ones.

Various clusters of metallic or dielectric nanoparticles can exhibit sharp Fano resonances originating from at least two modes interference of different spectral width. However, for practical applications such as biosensing or nonlinear nanophotonics, the fine-tuning of the Fano resonances is generally required. Here, we propose and demonstrate a novel type of hybrid oligomers consisting of asymmetric metal-dielectric (Au/Si) nanoparticles with a sharp Fano resonance in visible range, which has a predominantly magnetic origin. We demonstrate both, numerically and experimentally, that such hybrid nanoparticle oligomers allow fine-tuning of the Fano resonance via fs-laser induced melting of Au nanoparticles at the nanometer scale. We show that the Fano resonance wavelength can be changed by fs-laser reshaping very precisely (within 15~nm) being accompanied by a reconfiguration of its profile.
