We present a novel, to the best of our knowledge, remote gas detection and identification technique based on correlation spectroscopy with a piezoelectric tunable fiber-optic Fabry–Perot filter. We show that the spectral correlation amplitude between the filter transmission window and gas absorption features is related to the gas absorption optical depth, and that different gases can be distinguished from one another using their correlation signal phase. Using a previously captured telluric-corrected high-resolution near-infrared spectrum of Venus, we show that the radial velocity of Venus can be extracted from the phase of higher order harmonic lock-in signals. This correlation spectroscopy technique has applications in the detection and radial velocity determination of weak spectral features in astronomy and remote sensing. We experimentally demonstrate a remote C O 2 detection system using a lock-in amplifier, fiber-optic Fabry–Perot filter, and single channel avalanche photodiode.

Modern design of photonic devices is quickly and steadily departing from classical geometries to focus more and more on non-trivial structures and metamaterials. These devices are governed by a multitude of parameters and the optimal design requires to simultaneously consider different figure of merits. In this invited talk we will present our recent work on the application of machine learning tools to the multi-objective optimization of multi-parameter photonic devices. In particular, we will demonstrate the potentiality of dimensionality reduction for the analysis of the complex design space of subwavelength metamaterials devices.

We present an integrated photonic correlation filter for the detection of remote HCN gas. Subwavelength engineered metamaterial waveguides and devices are considered as fundamental building blocks for the next generation of integrated photonic circuits. Here we present an overview of recent advances in this surging field.

Spectral pattern recognition is used to measure temperature and generate calibrated wavelength/frequency combs using a single silicon waveguide ring resonator. The ring generates two incommensurate interleaving TE and TM spectral combs that shift independently with temperature to create a spectral pattern that is unique at every temperature. Following an initial calibration, the ring temperature can be determined by recognizing the spectral resonance pattern, and as a consequence the wavelength of every resonance is also known. Two methods of pattern based temperature retrieval are presented. In the first method, the ring is locked to a previously determined temperature set-point defined by the coincidence of only two specific TE and TM cavity modes. Based on a prior calibration at the set-point, the ring temperature and hence all resonance wavelengths are then known and the resulting comb can be used as a wavelength calibration reference. In this configuration, all reference comb wavelengths have been reproduced within a 5 pm accuracy across an 80 nm range by using an on-chip micro-heater to tune the ring. For more general photonic thermometry, a spectral correlation algorithm is developed to recognize a resonance pattern across a 30 nm wide spectral window and thereby determine ring temperature continuously to 50 mK accuracy. The correlation method is extended to simultaneously determine temperature and to identify and correct for wavelength calibration errors in the interrogating light source. The temperature and comb wavelength accuracy is limited primarily by the linewidth of the ring resonances, with accuracy and resolution scaling with the ring quality factor., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

Subwavelength metamaterial structures in silicon waveguides open new degrees of freedom to control on-chip light propagation. They have been applied to many silicon photonic devices such as fiber-chip couplers, waveguide crossings, microspectrometers, ultra-fast optical switches, athermal waveguides, evanescent field sensors, polarization rotators and colorless interference couplers [1]. Here we report a demonstration of a metamaterial coupler and an InAs-on-InP quantum dash buried heterostructure laser optimized for mutual integration by direct facet-to-facet coupling with -1.2 dB coupling efficiency, coupled laser relative intensity noise (RIN) of -150 dB/Hz and 152 kHz linewidth. An accurate model for the silicon refractive index including its temperature and wavelength dependence is critically important for many disciplines of science and technology. Currently, such a model for temperatures above 22°C in the optical communication bands is not available. The temperature dependence in the spectral response of integrated echelle grating filters made in silicon-on-insulator is solely determined by the optical properties of the slab waveguide, making it largely immune to dimensional uncertainties. This feature renders the echelle filters a reliable tool to evaluate the thermo-optic properties of silicon. Here we investigate the temperature dependence of silicon echelle filters for the wavelength range of both O and C bands, measured between 22°C to 80°C. We show that if a constant thermo-optic coefficient of silicon is assumed for each band, as is common in the literature, the predictions show an underestimate of up to 10% in the temperature-induced channel wavelength shift. We propose and assess a model of silicon refractive index that encompasses both the wavelength and temperature dependence of its thermo-optic coefficients. We start from literature data for bulk silicon and further refine the model using the echelle filter measurement results. This model is validated through accurate predictions of device channel wavelengths and their temperature dependence, including the quadratic term, over a wide wavelength and temperature range. This work also demonstrates a new high-precision method for characterizing the optical properties of a variety of materials.

Metamaterial engineered waveguide structures are emerging as fundamental building blocks for integrated photonics. We report on the design of an ultra-compact integrated wavelength demultiplexer in echelle configuration for the optical O-band realized on silicon-on-insulator technology. The device has four channels with channel spacing of 800 GHz and a small footprint of 260 &times, 83 &mu, m2. Channel crosstalk lower than &minus, 28 dB across the four channels is experimentally demonstrated along with insertion losses of &minus, 1.5 dB.

Optical antennas are key components in optical phased arrays for light detection and ranging technology requiring long sensing range and high scanning resolution. To achieve a narrow beam width in the far-field region, antenna lengths of several millimeters or more are required. To date, such long antennas have been impossible to achieve in silicon waveguides because currently demonstrated technologies do not allow accurate control of grating strength. Here, we report on a new type of surface-emitting silicon waveguide with a dramatically increased antenna length of L = 3.65 m m . This is achieved by using a subwavelength metamaterial waveguide core evanescently coupled with radiative segments laterally separated from the core. This results in a far-field diffracted beam width of 0.025°, which is a record small beam divergence for a silicon photonics surface-emitting device. We also demonstrate that by using a design with L -shaped surface-emitting segments, the radiation efficiency of the antenna can be substantially increased compared to a conventional design, with an efficiency of 72% at the wavelength of 1550 nm.

Athermal design of integrated photonic devices can reduce the need for active temperature stabilization and consequently the energy required to operate photonic integrated circuits. For silicon photonic filters such as AWGs which employ wire or ridge waveguides, temperature insensitivity can be achieved using cladding materials with negative thermo-optic coefficients. On the other hand, in echelle grating filters the inteference takes place in the slab free-propagation region, and therefore the modal overlap with the cladding is small, rendering this method ineffective. In this work we present an approach to design an athermal echelle grating filter exploiting a temperature-synchronized Mach-Zehnder interferometer as input. This reduces the spectral shift over a temperature range of 20 K to less than ±45 pm compared to the 1.6 nm shift for the same echelle grating with a conventional waveguide input. Furthermore, the proposed design relies exclusively on a standard fabrication process for silicon-on-insulator photonic devices and exhibits a good tolerance to fabrication uncertainties.

Subwavelength grating (metamaterial) waveguide devices are becoming established as key building blocks for advanced integrated photonic circuits. In this talk we will present an overview of our recent advances in this surging field.

Girona, Spain, 2-6 July 2017, We report our advances in development of on-chip Fourier-transform spectrometers. Specifically, we present applications of subwavelength engineered waveguides in a new type of a compressive-sensing Fourier-transform spatial heterodyne spectrometer chip. The spectrometer is implemented as an array of Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) integrated on a photonic chip, in a spatial heterodyne configuration [1]. The signal from a set of MZIs comprises an undersampled discrete Fourier interferogram, which is inverted using L1-norm minimization technique to retrieve a sparse input spectrum. To implement this technique we use a subwavelength-engineered Fourier-transform spectrometer on a chip comprising 32 independent MZIs [2]. We successfully demonstrate the retrieval of sparse input signals by collecting data from restricted sets (8 and 14) of MZIs and applying common compressive-sensing reconstruction techniques to this data. We show that this retrieval maintains the full resolution and bandwidth of the original device despite a sampling factor as low as 1/4th of a conventional (non-compressive) design [3].

4 pags., 5 figs., We present two techniques for mitigating the effects of temperature drifts in waveguide spatial heterodyne Fourier-transform on-chip spectrometers. In high-resolution devices, large optical path length differences result in an increased sensitivity to temperature variations and impose stringent requirements on the thermal stabilization system. In order to overcome this limitation, here we experimentally demonstrate two new temperature mitigation techniques based on a temperature-sensitive calibration and phase error correction. The spectrometer chip under analysis comprises an array of 32 Mach¿Zehnder interferometers fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The optical path delays are implemented as microphotonic spirals of linearly increasing length up to 3.779 cm, yielding a spectral resolution of 17 pm. Waveguides structured at the subwavelength scale frustrate diffraction and behave as optical metamaterials with controllable refractive index. These structures have found widespread applications in silicon photonics, ranging from sub-decibel efficiency fibre-chip couplers to spectrometers and polarization rotators. Here, we briey describe the design foundations for sub-wavelength waveguide devices, both in terms of analytic effective medium approximations, as well as through rigorous Floch-Bloquet mode simulation. We propose a robust polarization rotator based on the mode-evolution mechanism. The polarization rotation in a silicon wire waveguide is achieved by forming an amorphous silicon (a-Si) overlayer and an SiO2 spacer on top of the waveguide. A strip pattern of a constant width is designed to be etched through the overlayer at a specific angle with respect to the Si waveguide. The asymmetry in the a-Si overlayer affects the waveguide mode by rotating the modal axis. This polarization rotator design is amenable to comparatively simple fabrication compatible with standard silicon photonic processing for integration. The length of the rotation section is 17 μm, and the broadband operation is achieved with a rotation efficiency higher than 90% for a wavelength range exceeding 135 nm. A maximum polarization rotation efficiency of 99.5% is predicted by calculation.

Bragg gratings are fundamental building blocks for integrated photonic circuits. In the high-index contrast silicon-on-insulator material platform, it is challenging to accurately control the grating strength and achieve narrow spectral bandwidths. Here we demonstrate a novel Bragg grating geometry utilizing a silicon subwavelength grating (SWG) waveguide with evanescently coupled periodic Bragg loading segments placed outside the SWG core. We report experimental 3 dB filter bandwidths in a range from 8 nm to 150 pm by adjusting the distance of the Bragg loading segments from the core and the relative phase shift of the segments on the two sides of the waveguide, with a structure that has a minimum feature size of 100 nm.

A planar waveguide Fourier-transform spectrometer with densely arrayed Mach-Zehnder interferometers is demonstrated. Subwavelength gratings are used to produce an optical path difference without waveguide bends. The fabricated device comprises of an array of 32 Mach-Zehnder interferometers, which produce a spatial interferogram without any moving parts, yielding a spectral resolution of 50 pm and a free-spectral range of 0.78 nm. As a result of similar propagation losses in subwavelength grating waveguides and conventional strip waveguides, loss imbalance is minimized and high interferometic extinction ratio of -25 to -30 dB is obtained. Furthermore, phase and amplitude errors arising from normal fabrication variation are compensated by the spectral retrieval process using calibration measurements.

This tutorial will cover the principles, design, fabrication and applications of subwavelength metamaterial structures in integrated optics, including a comprehensive overview of recent advances in implementations of these structures in silicon photonics.

We report our advances in development of subwavelength engineered structures for integrated photonics, specifically high-efficiency fiber-chip couplers, broadband surface grating couplers and ultra-broadband nanophotonic beam splitters.

We report our advances in development of subwavelength engineered structures for integrated photonics. This unique technology allows synthesis of an effective photonic medium with an unprecedented control of material properties, constituting a powerful tool for a designer of photonic integrated circuits. By locally engineering the refractive index of silicon by forming a pattern of holes at the subwavelength scale it is possible to manipulate the flow of light in silicon photonic waveguides. We have demonstrated a number of subwavelength engineered devices operating at telecom wavelengths, including fiber-chip couplers, waveguide crossings, WDM multiplexers, ultra-fast optical switches, athermal waveguides, evanescent field sensors, polarization rotators, transceiver hybrids and colorless interference couplers. The subwavelength metamaterial concept has been adopted by industry (IBM) for fiber-chip coupling and subwavelength engineered structures are likely to become key building blocks for the next generation of integrated photonic circuits. In this review, we summarize and discuss our recent studies of subwavelength grating (SWG) structures for engineering the refractive index of silicon microphotonic waveguides. The SWG effect allows control of the effective refractive index of a waveguide core over a range spanning the values of the cladding material and silicon by lithographic patterning. We demonstrate this effect with the example of segmented photonic wire waveguides, which are shown to exhibit low propagation loss, and can be used to make highly efficient waveguide crossings and in-plane fiber-chip coupling structures. Other applications of SWG structures in silicon photonic waveguide devices include surface grating couplers with enhanced performance and simplified fabrication requirements, as well as a novel curved waveguide sidewall grating micro-spectrometer, in which an SWG structure fulfills a dual purpose by acting as an effective slab waveguide for diffracted light and as a lateral cladding for a channel waveguide.

First implementations of subwavelength gratings (SWGs) in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides are discussed and demonstrated by experiment and simulations. The subwavelength effect is exploited for making antireflective and highly reflective waveguide facets as well as efficient fiber-chip coupling structures. We demonstrate experimentally that by etching triangular SWGs into SOI waveguide facets, the facet power reflectivity can be reduced from 31% to 94% facet reflectivity can be achieved with square SWGs for 5 μm thick SOI waveguides. Finally, SWG fiber-chip couplers for SOI photonic wire waveguides are introduced, including design, simulation, and first experimental results.

We review the use of the oxide cladding stress-induced photoelastic effect to modify the polarization dependent properties in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguide components, and highlight characteristics particular to this high index contrast (HIC) systems. The birefringence in SOI waveguides has its origin in the electromagnetic boundary conditions at the waveguide boundaries, and can be further modified by the presence of stress in the waveguiding materials. With typical stress levels in SiO2 films, which are often used as the upper cladding, the waveguide effective index can be altered anisotropically up to the order of 10−3 for ridges with heights ranging from 1 μm to 5 μm. This effect can be used effectively to counter the waveguide geometrical birefringence, allowing the waveguide cross-section profiles to be optimized for design criteria other than null geometrical birefringence. Design strategies are developed for using stress engineering to achieve a variety of functions. Polarization insensitive arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs), polarization insensitive ring resonators, and polarization splitters and filters are demonstrated using these design principles.

The devices comprise waveguide arrays of Mach-Zehnder interferometers with linearly increasing optical path differences, enabling scan-less spectral retrieval with large radiant throughput. Resolutions down to 40pm are experimentally demonstrated. Spatial heterodyne Fourier-transform (SHFT) spectrometry is an interferometric technique which circumvents the need of moving elements and provides an increased έtendue. The SHFT scheme can be implemented with a waveguide array of Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI) with linearly increasing optical path differences. The high refractive index contrast of the SOI platform and the waveguide bend radius of ~ 5 μm readily allow achieving high resolutions in a reduced footprint. We report three alternative implementations of the SHFT principle in SOI waveguides. Firstly, a SHFT chip with Si-wire microphotonic spirals, reaching a resolution of 40 pm at a central wavelength near 1.5 μm. Secondly, a SHFT micro-spectrometer with subwavelength gratings for refractive index engineering of the optical delay lines. Finally, an extension of the SHFT scheme to the mid-infrared, addressing specific challenges of this spectral region such as efficient coupling and power splitting structures, and robust performance over a substantially broader free spectral range. SHFT spectrometers are promising for a wide range of applications, including chemical and biological sensing, astronomy, communications, hand-held spectroscopy, and sensing from satellites or planetary rowers. Furthermore, the resolution of these devices can be readily scaled up to very long optical delays, opening a new pathway toward possibly overcoming current resolution limits of state-of-the-art spectroscopic instruments.

Coupling of light to and from integrated optical circuits has been recognized as a major practical challenge since the early years of photonics. The coupling is particularly difficult for high index contrast waveguides such as silicon-on-insulator, since the cross-sectional area of silicon wire waveguides is more than two orders of magnitude smaller than that of a standard single-mode fiber. Here, we experimentally demonstrate unprecedented control over the light coupling between the optical fiber and silicon chip by constructing the nanophotonic coupler with ultra-high coupling efficiency simultaneously for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations. We specifically demonstrate a subwavelength refractive index engineered nanostructure to mitigate loss and wavelength resonances by suppressing diffraction effects, enabling a coupling efficiency over 92% (0.32 dB) and polarization independent operation for a broad spectral range exceeding 100 nm.

Fiber-chip edge couplers are extensively used in integrated optics as one of the key structures for coupling of light between planar waveguide circuits and optical fibers. In this work, a new fiber-chip edge coupler concept with large mode size for coupling to submicrometer silicon photonic wire waveguides is presented. The coupler allows direct coupling to conventional SMF-28 optical fiber and circumvents the need for lensed fibers. We demonstrate by simulations a 95% mode overlap between the mode at the chip facet and a high numerical aperture single mode optical fiber with 6 μm mode field diameter (MFD). We also demonstrate a modified design with 89% overlap between the mode at the chip facet and a standard SMF-28 fiber with 10.4 μm MFD. The coupler is designed for 220 nm silicon-oninsulator (SOI) platform. An important advantage of our coupler is that large mode size is obtained without the need to increase buried oxide (BOX) thickness, which in our design is set to 3 μm. This remarkable feature is achieved by implementing in the SiO2 upper cladding two thin high-index Si3N4 layers. The high-index layers increase the effective refractive index of the upper cladding layer near the facet and are gradually tapered out along the coupler to provide adiabatic mode transformation to the silicon wire waveguide. Simultaneously, the Si-wire waveguide is inversely tapered along the coupler. The mode overlap at the chip facet is studied using a vectorial 2D mode solver and the mode transformation along the coupler is studied by 3D Finite-Difference Time-Domain simulations. This paper presents an overview of our recent work on several fundamental optical elements and their integration on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguide platform. Theory, design and experimental results are presented for monolithically integrated asymmetric graded-index waveguide couplers, as well as output couplers based on total internal reflection mirrors. Design strategies for dispersive elements on SOI, for example, ring resonators and arrayed waveguide gratings, are discussed with special emphasis on methods to eliminate the polarization sensitivity. Finally, the properties and applications of evanescent fields in SOI waveguides are reviewed

Periodic structures with a sub-wavelength pitch have been known since Hertz conducted his first experiments on the polarization of electromagnetic waves. While the use of these structures in waveguide optics was proposed in the 1990s, it has been with the more recent developments of silicon photonics and high-precision lithography techniques that sub-wavelength structures have found widespread application in the field of pho- tonics. This review first provides an introduction to the physics of sub-wavelength structures. An overview of the applications of sub-wavelength structures is then given including: anti-reflective coatings, polarization rotators, high-efficiency fiber-chip cou- plers, spectrometers, high-reflectivity mirrors, athermal waveg- uides, multimode interference couplers, and dispersion engi- neered, ultra-broadband waveguide couplers among others. Particular attention is paid to providing insight into the design strategies for these devices. The concluding remarks provide an outlook on the future development of sub-wavelength structures and their impact in photonics.

Subwavelength grating structures with a pitch smaller than the Bragg resonance length can be used for engineering the refractive index in silicon photonic waveguides. High contrast structures with a sub-wavelength pitch, small enough to suppress diffraction, exhibit extraordinary optical properties: depending on the design they may behave as perfect mirrors, anti-reflective interfaces, homogenous materials with controllable refractive index, or strongly dispersive materials. Here we discuss on the design possibilities such structures offer in planar waveguide devices in silicon-on-insulator. We briefly review the application of sub-wavelength structures in a variety of waveguide devices. Electron–hole pairs produced during optical second harmonic generation (SHG) at a Si(001) electrode in an electrochemical cell perturb the electric field-induced second harmonic response of the silicon surface. Photogenerated carriers screen the electric field in the space-charge region and enhance the SHG efficiency in the depletion regime. For SHG induced by a Ti:Sapphire laser at λ =790 nm, the screening effect results in a nearly parabolic dependence of the SHG efficiency on the potential applied to the electrode in the region of the minimum of the response. Model calculations give good agreement with experimental results.

Polarization control is essential in applications ranging from optical communications to interferometric sensors. The implementation of integrated polarization controllers is challenging as they require polarization rotating waveguides with stringent fabrication tolerances. Here, we present a fully integrated polarization controller scheme that significantly relaxes the requirements on the rotating waveguides, alleviating fabrication tolerances. We analytically establish a technology-independent, easily measurable tolerance condition for the rotating waveguides. We report a spatial heterodyne Fourier-transform spectrometer implemented with an array of optical fiber interferometers. This configuration generates a wavelength-dependent stationary interferogram from which the input spectrum is retrieved in a single shot without scanning elements. Furthermore, fabrication and experimental deviations from the ideal behavior of the device are corrected by spectral inversion algorithms. The spectral resolution of our system can be readily scaled up by incorporating longer optical fiber delays, providing a pathway toward surpassing current spectroscopy resolution limits. © 2013 Optical Society of America.

We report a spatial heterodyne Fourier-transform spectrometer consisting of an array of Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI) implemented in silicon microphotonics. Optical path differences between the MZI arms increase linearly along the array, generating a wavelength-dependent interferogram which enables the retrieval of the source spectrum with a single measurement. Optical delays were implemented with Si-wire waveguides arranged in tightly coiled spirals to achieve a high resolution in a reduced footprint. Our spectral retrieval algorithm compensates phase and amplitude errors arising from fabrication imperfections by using a transformation matrix based on the calibration data. Recently developed subwavelength structures in silicon waveguides are presented. Subwavelength grating photonic structures are discussed along with emerging practical components that exploit the principle of subwavelength refractive index engineering, including polarization-independent athermal silicon waveguides, ultra-broadband and compact multimode interference couplers, fabrication tolerant polarization rotators and interferometer arrays with subwavelength optical delay lines.

Integrated polarization rotators suffer from very high sensitivity to fabrication errors. A polarization rotator scheme that substantially increases fabrication tolerances is proposed. In the proposed scheme, two tunable polarization phase shifters are used to connect three rotator waveguide sections. By means of properly setting the polarization phase shifters, fabrication errors are compensated and perfect polarization rotation is achieved. Analytical conditions are shown that determine the maximum deviation that can be corrected with the proposed scheme. A design example is discussed, where the thermo-optic effect is used to provide the required tunable polarization phase shifting. In most integrated optics platforms, including silicon-on-insulator, only minor modifications in refractive index are possible. The geometry of the waveguiding structure is thus the only degree of freedom for the design of devices. The use of sub-wavelength gratings (SWGs), i.e. structures that are small enough to suppress diffraction effects, enables local engineering of both refractive index and dispersion, thereby opening new possibilities for device design. We review our recent results on subwavelength grating structures for engineering the refractive index of silicon waveguides. Various applications are presented, such as fiber-chip coupling, waveguide crossings and athermal waveguides with a polymer-silicon hybrid core.

Integrated polarization rotators are known to exhibit stringent fabrication tolerances, which severely handicap their practical application. Here we present a general polarization rotator scheme that enables both the compensation of fabrication errors and wavelength tunability. The scheme is described analytically, and a condition for perfect polarization conversion is established. Simulations of a silicon-on-insulator polarization rotator show polarization extinction ratios in excess of 40 dB even in the presence of large fabrication errors that in a conventional rotator configuration degrade the extinction ratio to below 5 dB. Additionally, wavelength tuning over ±30 nm is shown.

We investigate the picosecond switching capabilities of a planar waveguide interferometric photonic device when used for all-optical wavelength conversion of one picosecond pulses. Our device comprises a subwavelength grating waveguide arm and a photonic wire waveguide arm in a Mach–Zehnder configuration, fabricated on the silicon-on-insulator material platform. No detrimental effects of pulse broadening for transient pulses were observed.

We describe the development of a waveguide Fourier-transform spectrometer for space-borne high-resolution sensing. A prototype device is designed to monitor the water vapor absorption band near 1,364 nm with a resolution of 0.05 nm. It has no moving parts and is based on a unique concept of arrayed interferometers implemented in silicon-on-insulator planar waveguide chip. The optical input is formed by many independent waveguides, providing a significantly increased light gathering capability (etendue) compared to single-waveguide input configurations. Enhancements of the spectrometer capabilities are achieved by stacking planar waveguide layers and by using surface gratings to couple light into the waveguides.

Grating couplers have shown promising performance in terms of coupling efficiency and alignment tolerances as an interface between optical fibers and nanometric silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides. In this paper we review our previous work, where the implementation of a fiber to chip grating coupler in micrometric rib SOI waveguide was demonstrated for the first time, showing measured coupling efficiency of -2.2dB for transverse-electric (TE) polarization. The use of grating couplers in high index contrast waveguides like silicon on insulator (SOI) offers several advantages over other coupling approaches, including better alignment tolerances and allowing for wafer-scale testing. The grating couplers were developed for nanometric SOI waveguides (Si-wires), and recently also for micrometric rib waveguides. In this paper we review our work in fiber-to-chip grating couplers for thick SOI rib waveguides, where a coupling efficiency of −2.2 dB was demonstrated experimentally. We also discuss the use of grating couplers to improve optical throughput (etendue) of a planar waveguide Fourier-Transform (FT) spectrometer implemented in thick rib waveguides.

We report on the experimental demonstration and analysis of a new waveguide principle using subwavelength gratings. Unlike other periodic waveguides such as line-defects in a 2D photonic crystal lattice, a subwavelength grating waveguide confines the light as a conventional index-guided structure and does not exhibit optically resonant behaviour. Subwavelength grating waveguides in silicon-on-insulator are fabricated with a single etch step and allow for flexible control of the effective refractive index of the waveguide core simply by lithographic patterning. Experimental measurements indicate a propagation loss as low as 2.1 dB/cm for subwavelength grating waveguides with negligible polarization and wavelength dependent loss, which compares favourably to conventional microphotonic silicon waveguides. The measured group index is nearly constant n(g) ~1.5 over a wavelength range exceeding the telecom C-band.

Silicon photonic wire waveguides are usually highly birefringent, so they are generally designed to operate for one particular polarization. For commonly used waveguides with a silicon thickness of 220 nm, TE polarization is preferred since TM is only weakly guided. For waveguides with a silicon thickness larger than 250 nm, both TE and TM polarizations have been employed. Overall, the choice of polarization has largely appeared arbitrary. In this presentation we review the pertinent polarization-dependent waveguide properties, including losses, back-reflection, polarization conversion and fabrication tolerances, with the intent to suggest guidelines for choosing the proper polarization.
