The Voyager spacecraft are the first man-made objects to cross the termination shock (TS), where the solar wind becomes sub-fast magnetosonic due to the interaction with the local interstellar medium. Voyager 2 observations revealed that classical single-fluid magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) or multispecies single-fluid MHD models are not sufficient to describe the microstructure of the TS and the observed nonlinear waves downstream the TS. Consequently, more sophisticated physical models, like multifluid, hybrid or fully kinetic solar wind models, are needed to capture nonlinear waves, dispersive shock waves, and ion-ion instabilities, where each ion species (and electrons) can move independently with their own bulk velocities, and the fluctuating parts of the ion velocities are often comparable to the mean velocity of the collective plasma fluid. The multifluid simulation of the TS by Zieger et al. [2015] shows a remarkable agreement with high-resolution Voyager 2 observations, reproducing not only the microstructure of the third TS crossing (TS3) but also the energy partitioning among thermal ions, pickup ions (PUI), and electrons across the shock. It was demonstrated that TS3 is a subcritical dispersive shock wave with low fast magnetosonic Mach number and high plasma ß. Here we present multifluid, hybrid, and particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of the second TS crossing (TS2) by Voyager 2, which was somewhat stronger than TS3, with an observed compression ratio of 2.2. All three types of simulations confirm the dispersive nature of the TS in agreement with Voyager 2 observations. We conclude that TS2, just as TS3, is a subcritical dispersive shock wave with a soliton (overshoot) at the leading edge of the shock and a quasi-stationary nonlinear wave train downstream of the shock front. We compared the cross-shock electric field in the multifluid, hybrid, and PIC simulations and found a reasonable agreement. We show that the Hall electric field is dominating over the convective and ambipolar electric fields, which indicates that electrons play an important role in the shock transition. Finally, we demonstrate that the microstructure of the termination shock is controlled by dispersion rather than ion reflection, and only slightly affected by reflected solar wind ions in the hybrid and PIC simulations, which validates the multifluid model on fluid scale. The dispersive nature of the termination shock has important implications for the transition and acceleration of PUIs across the termination shock, which is revealed in the PUI distributions in our hybrid [Giacalone et al., 2021] and PIC simulations.

Recent observations have shown that in many large solar energetic particle (SEP) events the event-integrated differential spectra resemble double power laws. We perform numerical modeling of particle acceleration at coronal shocks propagating through a streamer-like magnetic field by solving the Parker transport equation, including protons and heavier ions. We find that for all ion species the energy spectra integrated over the simulation domain can be described by a double power law, and the break energy depends on the ion charge-to-mass ratio as $E_B \sim (Q/A)^\alpha$, with $\alpha$ varying from 0.16 to 1.2 by considering different turbulence spectral indices. We suggest that the double power law distribution may emerge as a result of the superposition of energetic particles from different source regions where the acceleration rates differ significantly due to particle diffusion. The diffusion and mixing of energetic particles could also provide an explanation for the increase of Fe/O at high energies as observed in some SEP events. Although further mixing processes may occur, our simulations indicate that either power-law break or rollover can occur near the Sun and predict that the spectral forms vary significantly along the shock front, which may be examined by upcoming near-Sun SEP measurements from Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

The acceleration of charged particles by interplanetary shocks (IPs) can drain a nonnegligible fraction of the plasma pressure. In this study, we have selected 17 IPs observed in situ at 1 au by the Advanced Composition Explorer and the Wind spacecraft, and 1 shock at 0.8 au observed by Parker Solar Probe. We have calculated the time-dependent partial pressure of suprathermal and energetic particles (smaller and greater than 50 keV for protons and 30 keV for electrons, respectively) in both the upstream and downstream regions. The particle fluxes were averaged for 1 hr before and 1 hr after the shock time to remove short timescale effects. Using the MHD Rankine–Hugoniot jump conditions, we find that the fraction of the total upstream energy flux transferred to suprathermal and energetic downstream particles is typically ≲16%, in agreement with previous observations and simulations. Notably, by accounting for errors on all measured shock parameters, we have found that for any given fast magnetosonic Mach number, M f < 7, the angle between the shock normal and average upstream magnetic field, θ Bn, is not correlated with the energetic particle pressure; in particular, the partial pressure of energized particles does not decrease for θ Bn ≳ 45°. The downstream electron-to-proton energy ratio in the range ≳ 140 eV for electrons and ≳ 70 keV for protons exceeds the expected ∼1% and nears equipartition (>0.1) for the Wind events.

We propose a model for interpreting highly variable ion composition ratios in solar energetic particles (SEP) events recently observed by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) at $0.3 - 0.45$ astronomical unit. We use numerical simulations to calculate SEP propagation in a turbulent interplanetary magnetic field with a Kolmogorov power spectrum from large scale down to the gyration scale of energetic particles. We show that when the source regions of different species are offset by a distance comparable to the size of the source regions, the observed energetic particle composition He/H can be strongly variable over more than two orders of magnitude, even if the source ratio is at the nominal value. Assuming a $^3$He/$^4$He source ratio of $10 \%$ in impulsive $^3$He-rich events and the same spatial offset of the source regions, the $^3$He/$^4$He ratio at observation sites also vary considerably. The variability of the ion composition ratios depends on the radial distance, which can be tested by observations made at different radial locations. Energetic particle transport in the interplanetary medium is known to be affected by magnetic structures. It has been demonstrated for solar energetic particles in near-Earth orbit studies, and also for the more energetic cosmic rays. In this paper, we show observational evidence that intensity variations of solar energetic particles can be correlated with the occurrence of helical magnetic flux tubes and their boundaries. The analysis is carried out using data from Parker Solar Probe orbit 5, in the period 2020 May 24 to June 2. We use FIELDS magnetic field data and energetic particle measurements from the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS⊙IS) suite on the Parker Solar Probe. We identify magnetic flux ropes by employing a real-space evaluation of magnetic helicity, and their potential boundaries using the Partial Variance of Increments method. We find that energetic particles are either confined within or localized outside of helical flux tubes, suggesting that the latter act as transport boundaries for particles, consistent with previously developed viewpoints.

We provide analysis of a coronal mass ejection (CME) that passed over Parker Solar Probe (PSP) on January 20, 2020 when the spacecraft was at just 0.32 AU. The Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun instrument suite measures energetic particle populations associated with the CME before, during, and after its passage over the spacecraft. We observe a complex evolution of energetic particles, including a brief ~2 h period where the energetic particle fluxes are enhanced and the nominal orientation of the energetic particle streaming outward from the Sun (from 30 to 100 keV nuc−1 ) abruptly reverses inward toward the Sun. This transient and punctuated evolution highlights the importance of magnetic field structures that connect the spacecraft to different acceleration sites, one of which is likely more distant from the Sun than PSP during the evolution of the CME. We discuss these characteristics and what they tell us about the source of the energetic particles. During this period, PSP was radially aligned with the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory A (STEREO-A), which measured the same CME when it passed 1 AU. The magnetic field measurements at both spacecraft are remarkably similar, indicating that the spacecraft are likely encountering the same portion of the magnetic structure that has not evolved significantly in transit. The energetic particle observations on the other hand, are quite different at STEREO-A, showing how transport effects have acted on the energetic particle populations and obscured the detailed properties present earlier in the development of the CME. This event provides a unique case study in how energetic particle populations evolve as CMEs propagate through the heliosphere.

Context. In 2020 May-June, six solar energetic ion events were observed by the Parker Solar Probe/IS⊙IS instrument suite at ≈0.35 AU from the Sun. From standard velocity-dispersion analysis, the apparent ion path length is ≈0.625 AU at the onset of each event. Aims. We develop a formalism for estimating the path length of random-walking magnetic field lines to explain why the apparent ion path length at an event onset greatly exceeds the radial distance from the Sun for these events. Methods. We developed analytical estimates of the average increase in path length of random-walking magnetic field lines, relative to the unperturbed mean field. Monte Carlo simulations of field line and particle trajectories in a model of solar wind turbulence were used to validate the formalism and study the path lengths of particle guiding-center and full-orbital trajectories. The formalism was implemented in a global solar wind model, and the results are compared with ion path lengths inferred from IS⊙IS observations. Results. Both a simple estimate and a rigorous theoretical formulation are obtained for field-lines’ path length increase as a function of path length along the large-scale field. From simulated field line and particle trajectories, we find that particle guiding centers can have path lengths somewhat shorter than the average field line path length, while particle orbits can have substantially longer path lengths due to their gyromotion with a nonzero effective pitch angle. Conclusions. The long apparent path length during these solar energetic ion events can be explained by (1) a magnetic field line path length increase due to the field line random walk and (2) particle transport about the guiding center with a nonzero effective pitch angle due to pitch angle scattering. Our formalism for computing the magnetic field line path length, accounting for turbulent fluctuations, may be useful for application to solar particle transport in general.

We analyze an energetic proton event associated with a stream interaction region (SIR) that was observed at Parker Solar Probe on day 320 of 2018 when the spacecraft was just 0.34 AU from the Sun. Using the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun instrument suite, we perform a spectral analysis of the event and show how the observed spectra evolve over the course of the event. We find that the spectra from the first day of the event are much more consistent with local acceleration at a weak compression, while spectra from later on are more typical of SIR-related events in which particles accelerated at distant shocks dominate. After the first day, the spectra remain approximately constant, which indicates that the modulation of energetic particles during transit from the presumed source region is weaker than previously thought. We argue that these observations can be explained by a sub-Parker spiral magnetic field structure connecting the spacecraft to a source region in the SIR that is relatively close to the Sun. We further propose that acceleration at weak, pre-shock compressions likely plays an important role in observations of SIR-related events in the inner heliosphere and that future modelling of such events should consider acceleration all along the compression region, not just at the distant shock region.

Early observations from the first orbit of Parker Solar Probe (PSP) show recurrent stream interaction regions that form close to the Sun. Energetic particle enhancements were observed on the 320th–326th day of the year 2018, which corresponds to ~1–7 days after the passage of the stream interface between faster and slower solar wind. Energetic particles stream into the inner heliosphere to the PSP spacecraft near 0.33 au (71 solar radii) where they are measured by the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS⊙IS). The large 6-day time interval over which energetic particles are observed after the stream passage provides a unique perspective on the development of stream interactions within the heliosphere. The long duration of energetic particle enhancements suggests that particles stream in through the inner heliosphere more directly along magnetic field lines that form a sub-Parker spiral structure due to magnetic footpoint motion at the Sun and shearing of the magnetic field in the rarefaction region behind the stream interface. The strong build-up of energetic particle fluxes in the first 3 days after the passage of the stream interface indicates that suprathermal populations are enhanced near the interaction region through compression or other acceleration processes in addition to being diffusively accelerated. The early increases in energetic particle fluxes (in the first 3 days) in the formation of these events allows for the characterization of the acceleration associated with these suprathermal seed populations. Thus, we show that the time history of energetic particle fluxes observed by IS⊙IS provides a new view of particle acceleration at stream interaction regions throughout the inner heliosphere.

A number of double coronal X-ray sources have been observed during solar flares by RHESSI, where the two sources reside at different sides of the inferred reconnection site. However, where and how are these X-ray-emitting electrons accelerated remains unclear. Here we present the first model of the double coronal hard X-ray (HXR) sources, where electrons are accelerated by a pair of termination shocks driven by bi-directional fast reconnection outflows. We model the acceleration and transport of electrons in the flare region by numerically solving the Parker transport equation using velocity and magnetic fields from the macroscopic magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a flux rope eruption. We show that electrons can be efficiently accelerated by the termination shocks and high-energy electrons mainly concentrate around the two shocks. The synthetic HXR emission images display two distinct sources extending to $>$100 keV below and above the reconnection region, with the upper source much fainter than the lower one. The HXR energy spectra of the two coronal sources show similar spectral slopes, consistent with the observations. Our simulation results suggest that the flare termination shock can be a promising particle acceleration mechanism in explaining the double-source nonthermal emissions in solar flares., Accepted for publication in ApJ

The topic of this review paper is on the influence of solar wind turbulence on shock propagation and its consequence on the acceleration and transport of energetic particles at shocks. As the interplanetary shocks sweep through the turbulent solar wind, the shock surfaces fluctuate and ripple in a range of different scales. We discuss particle acceleration at rippled shocks in the presence of ambient solar-wind turbulence. This strongly affects particle acceleration and transport of energetic particles (both ions and electrons) at shock fronts. In particular, we point out that the effects of upstream turbulence is critical for understanding the variability of energetic particles at shocks. Moreover, the presence of pre-existing upstream turbulence significantly enhances the trapping near the shock of low-energy charged particles, including near the thermal energy of the incident plasma, even when the shock propagates normal to the average magnetic field. The acceleration of charged particles by interplanetary shocks can drain a non-negligible fraction of the upstream ram pressure. For a sample of shocks observed in-situ at 1 AU by the ACE and Wind spacecraft, time-series of the non-Maxwellian components (supra-thermal and higher-energy) of the ion and electron energy spectra were acquired for each event. These were averaged for one hour before and after the time of the shock passage to determine their partial pressure. Using the MHD Rankine-Hugoniot jump conditions, we find that the fraction of the total upstream energy flux transferred to non-Maxwellian downstream particles is typically about 2-16%. Notably, our sample shows that neither the fast magnetosonic Mach number nor the angle between the shock normal and average upstream magnetic field are correlated with non-Maxwellian particle pressure.

Context. Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs) with energy in the GeV range can propagate to Earth from their acceleration region near the Sun and produce Ground Level Enhancements (GLEs). The traditional approach to interpreting and modelling GLE observations assumes particle propagation only parallel to the magnetic field lines of interplanetary space, i.e. it is spatially 1D. Recent measurements by PAMELA have characterised SEP properties at 1 AU for the ~100 MeV-1 GeV range at high spectral resolution. Aims. We model the transport of GLE-energy solar protons through the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) using a 3D approach, to assess the effect of the Heliospheric Current Sheet (HCS) and drifts associated to the gradient and curvature of the Parker spiral. The latter are influenced by the IMF polarity. We derive 1 AU observables and compare the simulation results with data from PAMELA. Methods. We use a 3D test particle model including a HCS. Monoenergetic populations are studied first to obtain a qualitative picture of propagation patterns and numbers of crossings of the 1 AU sphere. Simulations for power law injection are used to derive intensity profiles and fluence spectra at 1 AU. A simulation for a specific event, GLE 71, is used to compare with PAMELA data. Results. Spatial patterns of 1 AU crossings and the average number of crossings are strongly influenced by 3D effects, with significant differences between periods of A+ and A- polarities. The decay time constant of 1 AU intensity profiles varies depending on the polarity and position of the observer, and it is not a simple function of the mean free path as in 1D models. Energy dependent leakage from the injection flux tube is particularly important for GLE energy particles, in many cases resulting in a roll-over in the fluence spectrum., Comment: Accepted by A&A (revised version, 9 pages, 6 figures)

The heliosheath (HSH) radial speeds at Voyager 2 (V2) derived from the plasma instrument (PLS) and from particle instruments using the Compton–Getting (CG) effect are different. At V2 the CG speeds are more variable than the plasma speeds and decrease about 2 yr before the heliopause. We use magnetic flux conservation to differentiate between these two speed profiles at V2, comparing the magnetic flux observed at 1 au and in the HSH. For V2 the PLS speed profile is significantly more consistent with magnetic flux conservation than the CG speeds. For Voyager 1 (V1), we present new V_R derivations from the Cosmic Ray Subsystem (CRS) using the CG method that agree reasonably well with those previously obtained from the low energy charged particle (LECP) instrument. If we use the V2 PLS speed profile to calculate the magnetic flux at V1, we again find much better agreement than if we use the V1 CG speeds. These results suggest that the radial speeds derived from particle anisotropy observations in the HSH are not reliable.

A series of solar energetic particle (SEP) events were observed at Parker Solar Probe (PSP) by the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS☉IS) during the period from April 18, 2019 through April 24, 2019. The PSP spacecraft was located near 0.48 au from the Sun on Parker spiral field lines that projected out to 1 au within ∼25° of near Earth spacecraft. These SEP events, though small compared to historically large SEP events, were amongst the largest observed thus far in the PSP mission and provide critical information about the space environment inside 1 au during SEP events. During this period the Sun released multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs). One of these CMEs observed was initiated on April 20, 2019 at 01:25 UTC, and the interplanetary CME (ICME) propagated out and passed over the PSP spacecraft. Observations by the Electromagnetic Fields Investigation (FIELDS) show that the magnetic field structure was mostly radial throughout the passage of the compression region and the plasma that followed, indicating that PSP did not directly observe a flux rope internal to the ICME, consistent with the location of PSP on the flank of the ICME. Analysis using relativistic electrons observed near Earth by the Electron, Proton and Alpha Monitor (EPAM) on the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) demonstrates the presence of flare-accelerated seed populations during the events observed. The energy spectrum of the IS☉IS observed seed population below 1 MeV is consistent with the superposition of acceleration processes near the limit of plasma stability. IS☉IS observations reveal the compression and acceleration of seed populations during the passage of the ICME, which is likely a key part of the pre-acceleration process that occurs close to the Sun and pre-conditions the energetic particle acceleration process.

We present an analysis of Parker Solar Probe (PSP) IS⊙IS observations of ~30–300 keV n⁻¹ ions on 2018 November 11 when PSP was about 0.25 au from the Sun. Five hours before the onset of a solar energetic particle (SEP) event, a coronal mass ejection (CME) was observed by STEREO-A/COR2, which crossed PSP about a day later. No shock was observed locally at PSP, but the CME may have driven a weak shock earlier. The SEP event was dispersive, with higher energy ions arriving before the lower energy ones. Timing suggests the particles originated at the CME when it was at ~7.4R_⊙. SEP intensities increased gradually from their onset over a few hours, reaching a peak, and then decreased gradually before the CME arrived at PSP. The event was weak, having a very soft energy spectrum (−4 to −5 spectral index). The earliest arriving particles were anisotropic, moving outward from the Sun, but later, the distribution was observed to be more isotropic. We present numerical solutions of the Parker transport equation for the transport of 30–300 keV n⁻¹ ions assuming a source comoving with the CME. Our model agrees well with the observations. The SEP event is consistent with ion acceleration at a weak shock driven briefly by the CME close to the Sun, which later dissipated before arriving at PSP, followed by the transport of ions in the interplanetary magnetic field.

International audience; The magnetometer instrument on the Solar Orbiter mission is designed to measure the magnetic field local to the spacecraft continuously for the entire mission duration. The need to characterise not only the background magnetic field but also its variations on scales from far above to well below the proton gyroscale result in challenging requirements on stability, precision, and noise, as well as magnetic and operational limitations on both the spacecraft and other instruments. The challenging vibration and thermal environment has led to significant development of the mechanical sensor design. The overall instrument design, performance, data products, and operational strategy are described.

We draw a comparison between a solar energetic particle event associated with the release of a slow coronal mass ejection close to the sun, and the energetic particle population produced in high current density field-aligned current structures associated with auroral phenomena in planetary magnetospheres. We suggest that this process is common in CME development and lift-off in the corona, and may account for the electron populations that generate Type III radio bursts, as well as for the prompt energetic ion and electron populations typically observed in interplanetary space., Accepted for publication ApJ

The Parker Solar Probe was launched on 2018 August 12 and completed its second orbit on 2019 June 19 with perihelion of 35.7 solar radii. During this time, the Energetic particle Instrument-Hi (EPI-Hi, one of the two energetic particle instruments comprising the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun, ISOIS) measured seven proton intensity increases associated with stream interaction regions (SIRs), two of which appear to be occurring in the same region corotating with the Sun. The events are relatively weak, with observed proton spectra extending to only a few MeV and lasting for a few days. The proton spectra are best characterized by power laws with indices ranging from -4.3 to -6.5, generally softer than events associated with SIRs observed at 1 au and beyond. Helium spectra were also obtained with similar indices, allowing He/H abundance ratios to be calculated for each event. We find values of 0.016-0.031, which are consistent with ratios obtained previously for corotating interaction region events with fast solar wind < 600 km s-1. Using the observed solar wind data combined with solar wind simulations, we study the solar wind structures associated with these events and identify additional spacecraft near 1 au appropriately positioned to observe the same structures after some corotation. Examination of the energetic particle observations from these spacecraft yields two events that may correspond to the energetic particle increases seen by EPI-Hi earlier.

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe mission1 recently plunged through the inner heliosphere of the Sun to its perihelia, about 24 million kilometres from the Sun. Previous studies farther from the Sun (performed mostly at a distance of 1 astronomical unit) indicate that solar energetic particles are accelerated from a few kiloelectronvolts up to near-relativistic energies via at least two processes: ‘impulsive’ events, which are usually associated with magnetic reconnection in solar flares and are typically enriched in electrons, helium-3 and heavier ions2, and ‘gradual’ events3,4, which are typically associated with large coronal-mass-ejection-driven shocks and compressions moving through the corona and inner solar wind and are the dominant source of protons with energies between 1 and 10 megaelectronvolts. However, some events show aspects of both processes and the electron–proton ratio is not bimodally distributed, as would be expected if there were only two possible processes5. These processes have been very difficult to resolve from prior observations, owing to the various transport effects that affect the energetic particle population en route to more distant spacecraft6. Here we report observations of the near-Sun energetic particle radiation environment over the first two orbits of the probe. We find a variety of energetic particle events accelerated both locally and remotely including by corotating interaction regions, impulsive events driven by acceleration near the Sun, and an event related to a coronal mass ejection. We provide direct observations of the energetic particle radiation environment in the region just above the corona of the Sun and directly explore the physics of particle acceleration and transport. The Parker Solar Probe mission has reached the inner heliosphere of the Sun and made measurements of energetic particle events in the near-Sun radiation environment.

A solar energetic particle event was detected by the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (ISOIS) instrument suite on Parker Solar Probe (PSP) on 2019 April 4 when the spacecraft was inside of 0.17 au and less than 1 day before its second perihelion, providing an opportunity to study solar particle acceleration and transport unprecedentedly close to the source. The event was very small, with peak 1 MeV proton intensities of ~0.3 particles (cm^2 sr s MeV)^-1, and was undetectable above background levels at energies above 10 MeV or in particle detectors at 1 au. It was strongly anisotropic, with intensities flowing outward from the Sun up to 30 times greater than those flowing inward persisting throughout the event. Temporal association between particle increases and small brightness surges in the extreme-ultraviolet observed by the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory, which were also accompanied by type III radio emission seen by the Electromagnetic Fields Investigation on PSP, indicates that the source of this event was an active region nearly 80 degrees east of the nominal PSP magnetic footpoint. This suggests that the field lines expanded over a wide longitudinal range between the active region in the photosphere and the corona.

Long Duration Gamma-Ray Flares (LDGRFs) are characterized by delayed and long-duration gamma-ray emission above $\sim$50 MeV. Despite dozens of observations in the last decade with $\it{Fermi}$/LAT, the nature of this emission has been a challenge to explain. The highest energy emission has generally been attributed to the decay of pions produced by the interaction of high-energy protons with ambient solar material. The fact that the $\gamma$-ray emission is delayed from the onset of the initial eruption and that the emission is, in some cases, unusually long in duration suggests that particle acceleration occurs within large volumes extending to high altitudes, either by stochastic acceleration within large coronal loops or by back-precipitation from CME-driven shocks. We have tested these models by a making direct comparisons between the properties of the accelerated ion population at the flare derived from the observations of $\it{Fermi}$/LAT and those of solar energetic particles detected at Earth by PAMELA at comparable high energies. We investigated 27 high-energy gamma ray events (from \cite{ref:SHARE2018}), and for 14 events we compare the two populations (SEPs in space and the interacting population at the Sun) and discuss the implications in terms of potential sources of the LDGRFs.

The effects of turbulence in the very local interstellar medium (VLISM) have been proposed by Giacalone & Jokipii (2015) to be important in determining the structure of the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) ribbon via particle trapping by magnetic mirroring. We further explore this effect by simulating the motion of charged particles in a turbulent magnetic field superposed on a large-scale mean field, which we have considered to be either spatially-uniform or a mean field derived from a 3D MHD simulation. We find that the ribbon is not double-peaked, in contrast to Giacalone & Jokipii (2015). However, the magnetic mirror force still plays an important role in trapping particles. Furthermore, the ribbon$'$s thickness is considerably larger if the large-scale mean field is draped around the heliosphere. Voyager 1 observations in the VLISM show a turbulent field component that is stronger than previously thought, which we test in our simulation. We find that the inclusion of turbulent fluctuations at scales ${\gtrsim}$100 au and power consistent with Voyager 1 observations produces a ribbon whose large-scale structure is inconsistent with IBEX observations. However, restricting the fluctuations to ${\sim}$10 au or smaller produces a smoother ribbon structure similar to IBEX observations. Different turbulence realizations produce different small-scale features ${\lesssim}10��$ in the ribbon, but its large-scale structure is robust if the maximum fluctuation size is ${\sim}$10 au. This suggests that the magnetic field structure at scales ${\lesssim}$10 au is determined by the heliosphere$'$s interaction with the VLISM and cannot entirely be represented by homogeneous interstellar turbulence., Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

Little is known about the origin of the high-energy and sustained emission from solar Long-Duration Gamma-Ray Flares (LDGRFs), identified with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO), the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM), and now Fermi. Though Fermi/Large Area Space Telescope (LAT) has identified dozens of flares with LDGRF signature, the nature of this phenomenon has been a challenge to explain both due to the extreme energies and long durations. The highest-energy emission has generally been attributed to pion production from the interaction of >300 MeV protons with the ambient matter. The extended duration suggests that particle acceleration occurs over large volumes extending high in the corona, either from stochastic acceleration within large coronal loops or from back precipitation from coronal mass ejection driven shocks. It is possible to test these models by making direct comparison between the properties of the accelerated ion population producing the gamma-ray emission derived from the Fermi/LAT observations, and the characteristics of solar energetic particles (SEPs) measured by the Payload for Matter-Antimatter Exploration and Light Nuclei Astrophysics (PAMELA) spacecraft in the energy range corresponding to the pion-related emission detected with Fermi. For fourteen of these events we compare the two populations -- SEPs in space and the interacting particles at the Sun -- and discuss the implications in terms of potential sources. Our analysis shows that the two proton numbers are poorly correlated, with their ratio spanning more than five orders of magnitude, suggesting that the back precipitation of shock-acceleration particles is unlikely the source of the LDGRF emission., Accepted for publication in ApJ

Aims. The Parker Solar Probe (PSP) orbit provides an opportunity to study the inner heliosphere at distances closer to the Sun than previously possible. Due to the solar minimum conditions, the initial orbits of PSP yielded only a few solar energetic particle (SEP) events for study. Recently during the fifth orbit, at distances from 0.45 to 0.3 au, the energetic particle suite on PSP, Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS⊙IS), observed a series of six SEP events, adding to the limited number of SEP events studied inside of 0.5 au. Variations in the H and He spectra and the He/H abundance ratio are examined and discussed in relation to the identified solar source regions and activity. Methods. IS⊙IS measures the energetic particle environment from ~20 keV to >100 MeV/nuc. Six events were selected using the ~1 MeV proton intensities, and while small, they were sufficient to calculate proton and helium spectra from ~1 to ~10 MeV/nuc. For the three larger events, the He/H ratio as a function of energy was determined. Using the timing of the associated radio bursts, solar sources were identified for each event and the eruptions were examined in extreme ultraviolet emission. Results. The largest of the selected events has peak ~1 MeV proton intensities of 3.75 (cm2 sr s MeV)−1. Within uncertainties, the He and H spectra have similar power law forms with indices ranging from −2.3 to −3.3. For the three largest events, the He/H ratios are found to be relatively energy independent; however, the ratios differ substantially with values of 0.0033 ± 0.0013, 0.177 ± 0.047, and 0.016 ± 0.009. An additional compositional variation is evident in both the 3He and electron signatures. These variations are particularly interesting as the three larger events are likely a result of similar eruptions from the same active region.

We estimate the intensity of interstellar pickup protons accelerated to ∼50 keV at various locations along the solar-wind termination shock, using two-dimensional hybrid simulations. Parameters for the solar wind, interstellar pickup ions (PUIs), and magnetic field just upstream of the termination shock at one flank of the heliosphere, and at the location in the downwind (or tail-ward) direction are based on a solar-wind/pickup-ion/turbulence model. The parameters upstream of the shock where Voyager 2 crossed are based on observations. The simulation is limited in size, and therefore cannot accurately model the distribution to energies much beyond ∼50 keV. This is sufficient to study the origin of the high-energy tail of the distribution, which is the low-energy portion of the anomalous cosmic-ray spectrum. We also extrapolate our results to other locations along the termination shock, such as the other flank, and the poles of the heliosphere. We find that the intensity of ∼10–50 keV accelerated pickup protons is remarkably similar at all three locations we simulated, suggesting that particles in this energy range are relatively uniformly distributed along the termination shock, and are likely quite uniform throughout the entire heliosheath. In addition, we find significant differences in the distribution in the 0.5–1 keV energy range for energetic neutral atoms coming from the tail region of the heliosphere compared to that at the nose or flank look directions. This is because the peak in the PUI distribution is at a higher energy there.

Solar energetic particles, or SEPs, from suprathermal (few keV) up to relativistic (\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\sim $$\end{document}∼few GeV) energies are accelerated near the Sun in at least two ways: (1) by magnetic reconnection-driven processes during solar flares resulting in impulsive SEPs, and (2) at fast coronal-mass-ejection-driven shock waves that produce large gradual SEP events. Large gradual SEP events are of particular interest because the accompanying high-energy (\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${>}10$$\end{document}>10s MeV) protons pose serious radiation threats to human explorers living and working beyond low-Earth orbit and to technological assets such as communications and scientific satellites in space. However, a complete understanding of these large SEP events has eluded us primarily because their properties, as observed in Earth orbit, are smeared due to mixing and contributions from many important physical effects. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the current state of knowledge of these important phenomena, and summarizes some of the key questions that will be addressed by two upcoming missions—NASA’s Solar Probe Plus and ESA’s Solar Orbiter. Both of these missions are designed to directly and repeatedly sample the near-Sun environments where interplanetary scattering and transport effects are significantly reduced, allowing us to discriminate between different acceleration sites and mechanisms and to isolate the contributions of numerous physical processes occurring during large SEP events.

A fast-mode shock can form in the front of reconnection outflows and has been suggested as a promising site for particle acceleration in solar flares. Recent development of magnetic reconnection has shown that numerous plasmoids can be produced in a large-scale current layer. Here we investigate the dynamical modulation of electron acceleration in the looptop region when plasmoids intermittently arrive at the shock by combining magnetohydrodynamics simulations with a particle kinetic model. As plasmoids interact with the shock, the looptop region exhibits various compressible structures that modulate the production of energetic electrons. The energetic electron population varies rapidly in both time and space. The number of 5$-$10 keV electrons correlates well with the area with compression, while that of $>$50 keV electrons shows good correlation with strong compression area but only moderate correlation with shock parameters. We further examine the impacts of the first plasmoid, which marks the transition from a quasi-steady shock front to a distorted and dynamical shock. The number of energetic electrons is reduced by $\sim 20\%$ at 15$-$25 keV and nearly 40\% for 25$-$50 keV, while the number of 5$-$10 keV electrons increases. In addition, the electron energy spectrum above 10 keV evolves softer with time. We also find double or even multiple distinct sources can develop in the looptop region when the plasmoids move across the shock. Our simulations have strong implications to the interpretation of nonthermal looptop sources, as well as the commonly observed fast temporal variations in flare emissions, including the quasi-periodic pulsations., accepted for publication in ApJL

Nonthermal loop-top sources in solar flares are the most prominent observational signature that suggests energy release and particle acceleration in the solar corona. Although several scenarios for particle acceleration have been proposed, the origin of the loop-top sources remains unclear. Here we present a model that combines a large-scale magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a two-ribbon flare with a particle acceleration and transport model for investigating electron acceleration by a fast-mode termination shock at the looptop. Our model provides spatially resolved electron distribution that evolves in response to the dynamic flare geometry. We find a concave-downward magnetic structure located below the flare termination shock, induced by the fast reconnection downflows. It acts as a magnetic trap to confine the electrons at the looptop for an extended period of time. The electrons are energized significantly as they cross the shock front, and eventually build up a power-law energy spectrum extending to hundreds of keV. We suggest that this particle acceleration and transport scenario driven by a flare termination shock is a viable interpretation for the observed nonthermal loop-top sources., Comment: submitted to ApJL

The Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) is a revolutionary mission that simultaneously investigates two of the most important overarching issues in Heliophysics today: the acceleration of energetic particles and interaction of the solar wind with the local interstellar medium. While seemingly disparate, these are intimately coupled because particles accelerated in the inner heliosphere play critical roles in the outer heliospheric interaction. Selected by NASA in 2018, IMAP is planned to launch in 2024. The IMAP spacecraft is a simple sun-pointed spinner in orbit about the Sun-Earth L1 point. IMAP’s ten instruments provide a complete and synergistic set of observations to simultaneously dissect the particle injection and acceleration processes at 1 AU while remotely probing the global heliospheric interaction and its response to particle populations generated by these processes. In situ at 1 AU, IMAP provides detailed observations of solar wind electrons and ions; suprathermal, pickup, and energetic ions; and the interplanetary magnetic field. For the outer heliosphere interaction, IMAP provides advanced global observations of the remote plasma and energetic ions over a broad energy range via energetic neutral atom imaging, and precise observations of interstellar neutral atoms penetrating the heliosphere. Complementary observations of interstellar dust and the ultraviolet glow of interstellar neutrals further deepen the physical understanding from IMAP. IMAP also continuously broadcasts vital real-time space weather observations. Finally, IMAP engages the broader Heliophysics community through a variety of innovative opportunities. This study examines the probable sources of sharp changes in the flux of energetic particles (EPs) in the solar wind. Data acquired by the ACE Low Energy Magnetic Spectrometer sensors during 1999 were used to identify EP boundaries that were not located at interplanetary shocks or caused by intermittent connection to the Earth's bow shock. It was found that at least 68%, and probably 80%, of such boundaries occur at significant changes in the plasma and magnetic field in the solar wind. Those changes are consistent with crossing preexisting tangential discontinuities or flux tube boundaries rather than by local MHD turbulence or time-dependent bursts of acceleration. Because some of the EP boundaries would not have been detected by Borovsky's (2008) analysis of flux tube boundaries, it is concluded that such boundaries in the solar wind are at least 30% more prevalent than previously suggested. The result can also be used to explain some observations of localized variations in EP flux both ahead of and behind the interplanetary shocks where particle acceleration occurred without requiring local acceleration.

We investigate the spatial distribution of charged particles accelerated by non-relativistic oblique fast collisionless shocks using three-dimensional test-particle simulations. We find that the density of low-energy particles exhibit a localised enhancement at the shock, resembling the "spike" measured at interplanetary shocks. In contrast to previous results based on numerical solutions to the focused transport equation, we find a shock spike for any magnetic obliquity, from quasi-perpendicular to parallel. We compare the pitch-angle distribution with respect to the local magnetic field and the momentum distribution far downstream and very near the shock within the spike; our findings are compatible with predictions from the scatter-free shock drift acceleration (SDA) limit in these regions. The enhancement of low-energy particles measured by Voyager 1 at solar termination shock is comparable with our profiles. Our simulations allow for predictions of supra-thermal protons at interplanetary shocks within ten solar radii to be tested by Solar Probe Mission. The Energetic Particle Instrument–Low Energy (EPI-Lo) experiment has detected several weak, low-energy (~30–300 keV nucleon⁻¹) solar energetic particle (SEP) events during its first two closest approaches to the Sun, providing a unique opportunity to explore the sources of low-energy particle acceleration. As part of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS⊙IS) suite, EPI-Lo was designed to investigate the physics of energetic particles; however, in the special lowest-energy "time-of-flight only" product used in this study, it also responds to solar photons in a subset of approximately sunward-looking apertures lacking special light-attenuating foils. During the first three perihelia, in a frame rotating with the Sun, PSP undergoes retrograde motion, covering a 17° heliographic longitudinal range three times during the course of the ~11-day perihelion passes, permitting a unique spatial and temporal study into the location, correlation, and persistence of previously unmeasurable SEPs. We examine the signatures of these SEPs (during the first PSP perihelion pass only) and the connection to possible solar sources using remote observations from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO), and the ground-based Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG). The orientation of the Sun relative to STEREO, SDO, and GONG makes such identifications challenging, but we do have several candidates, including an equatorial coronal hole at a Carrington longitude of ~335°. To analyze observations from EPI-Lo, which is a new type of particle instrument, we examine instrumental effects and provide a preliminary separation of the ion signal from the photon background.

The Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS⊙IS) instrument suite on the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) spacecraft is making in situ observations of energetic ions and electrons closer to the Sun than any previous mission. Using data collected during its first two orbits, which reached perihelion distances of 0.17 au, we have searched for ³He-rich solar energetic particle (SEP) events under very quiet solar minimum conditions. On 2019-110–111 (April 20–21), ³He-rich SEPs were observed at energies near 1 MeV nucleon ⁻¹ in association with energetic protons, heavy ions, and electrons. This activity was also detected by the Ultra-Low-Energy Isotope Spectrometer and the Electron, Proton, and Alpha Monitor instruments on the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft located near Earth, 0.99 au from the Sun. At that time, PSP and ACE were both magnetically connected to locations near the west limb of the Sun. Remote sensing measurements showed the presence of type III radio bursts and also helical jets from this region of the Sun. This combination of observations is commonly associated with ³He-rich SEP acceleration on the Sun. AR 12738, which was located at Carrington coordinates from which numerous X-ray flares were observed over a period of more than 6 months, was identified as the source of the ³He-rich events. This region was also the source of several other SEP events detected at PSP or ACE. Aside from the period in 2019 April, IS⊙IS did not observe any other ³He-rich SEPs during orbits 1 and 2.

Recent observations have shown that coronal shocks driven by coronal mass ejections can develop and accelerate particles within several solar radii in large solar energetic particle (SEP) events. Motivated by this, we present an SEP acceleration study including the process that a fast shock propagates through a streamer-like magnetic field with both closed and open field lines in the low corona region. The acceleration of protons is modeled by numerically solving the Parker transport equation with spatial diffusion both along and across the magnetic field. We show that particles can be sufficiently accelerated to up to several hundred MeV within 2-3 solar radii. When the shock propagates through a streamer-like magnetic field, particles are more efficiently accelerated compared to the case with a simple radial magnetic field, mainly due to perpendicular shock geometry and the natural trapping effect of closed magnetic fields. Our results suggest that the coronal magnetic field configuration is an important factor for producing large SEP events. We further show that the coronal magnetic field configuration strongly influences the distribution of energetic particles, leading to different locations of source regions along the shock front where most of high energy particles are concentrated. This work may have strong implications to SEP observations. Energetic particles constitute an important component of the heliospheric plasma environment. They range from solar energetic particles in the inner heliosphere to the anomalous cosmic rays accelerated at the interface of the heliosphere with the local interstellar medium. Although stochastic acceleration by fluctuating electric fields and processes associated with magnetic reconnection may account for some of the particle populations, the majority are accelerated by the variety of shock waves present in the solar wind. This review focuses on “gradual” solar energetic particle (SEP) events including their energetic storm particle (ESP) phase, which is observed if and when an associated shock wave passes Earth. Gradual SEP events are the intense long-duration events responsible for most space weather disturbances of Earth’s magnetosphere and upper atmosphere. The major characteristics of gradual SEP events are first described including their association with shocks and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), their ion composition, and their energy spectra. In the context of acceleration mechanisms in general, the acceleration mechanism responsible for SEP events, diffusive shock acceleration, is then described in some detail including its predictions for a planar stationary shock, shock modification by the energetic particles, and wave excitation by the accelerating ions. Finally, some complexities of shock acceleration are addressed, which affect the predictive ability of the theory. These include the role of temporal and spatial variations, the distinction between the plasma and wave compression ratios at the shock, the injection of thermal plasma at the shock into the process of shock acceleration, and the nonlinear evolution of ion-excited waves in the vicinity of the shock.

This paper reviews our current understanding of the acceleration mechanism of anomalous cosmic rays (ACRs). ACRs were first discovered in the early 1970s and soon afterwards it was recognized that they were accelerated interstellar pickup ions that obtained most of their energization in the outer heliosphere. Their observed composition and charge state suggest they are accelerated to over 200 MeV total energy in about a year. Diffusive shock acceleration at the solar-wind termination shock, which provided a natural explanation for spacecraft observations prior to the Voyager crossings of the termination shock in 2004 and 2007, was the long-held paradigm for the acceleration mechanism. But when both Voyagers crossed the shock, the ACR energy spectrum remained modulated, suggesting a source more distant than the shock. While shock acceleration remains a popular mechanism, other ideas have emerged recently to explain the observations. This review focuses on three main acceleration mechanisms that have been proposed: (a) acceleration at the termination shock including new effects such as the global blunt-shape of the shock and large-scale turbulence, (b) acceleration by magnetic reconnection in the heliosheath, and (c) acceleration by diffusive compression acceleration in the heliosheath.

We present solar energetic particle events observed at 1 AU from the Sun for which the proton energy spectra at energies between ~50 keV to ~1 MeV flatten during a period of at least ~12 hours prior to the passage of the associated interplanetary shock. The flattening of the proton energy spectra occurs when the source of the particles (presumably the traveling interplanetary shock) is still downwind from the spacecraft and particle intensities are still continuously increasing. The arrival of the shock at the spacecraft is then characterized by a steepening of the spectra, where low-energy proton intensities show a more pronounced enhancement than the high-energy proton intensities. We discuss the mechanisms that may result in this flattening of the spectra in terms of current models presented in the literature.

We study the physics of electron acceleration at collisionless shocks that move through a plasma containing large-scale magnetic fluctuations. We numerically integrate the trajectories of a large number of electrons, which are treated as test particles moving in the time dependent electric and magnetic fields determined from 2-D hybrid simulations (kinetic ions, fluid electron). The large-scale magnetic fluctuations effect the electrons in a number of ways and lead to efficient and rapid energization at the shock front. Since the electrons mainly follow along magnetic lines of force, the large-scale braiding of field lines in space allows the fast-moving electrons to cross the shock front several times, leading to efficient acceleration. Ripples in the shock front occuring at various scales will also contribute to the acceleration by mirroring the electrons. Our calculation shows that this process favors electron acceleration at perpendicular shocks. The current study is also helpful in understanding the injection problem for electron acceleration by collisionless shocks. It is also shown that the spatial distribution of energetic electrons is similar to in-situ observations (e.g., Bale et al. 1999; Simnett et al. 2005). The process may be important to our understanding of energetic electrons in planetary bow shocks and interplanetary shocks, and explaining herringbone structures seen in some type II solar radio bursts., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures, accepted by ApJ

We address the origin of the enhancement of ~40 keV to 5 MeV ions at the solar wind termination shock. Using self-consistent two-dimensional hybrid simulations (kinetic proton, fluid electron) of a shock moving through a plasma similar to that observed in the outer heliosphere, we conclude that the observed ion enhancements are consistent with accelerated "core" interstellar pickup ions (those that have not previously undergone any significant energization) by the termination shock via a combination of shock drift acceleration and particle scattering in meandering magnetic fields in the vicinity of the shock. In addition to the consequences for our understanding of anomalous cosmic rays, this work is also relevant to the more-general long-standing problem of accelerating low-energy particles by shocks that move nearly normal to a mean magnetic field.

Observations of impulsive solar energetic particles provide unique insight into the process of particle acceleration in the solar atmosphere. X-ray and γ-ray observations of precipitating particles from solar flares have shown offsets between the ion and the electron emission. We present Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) observations of interplanetary energetic ion and suprathermal electron events with intensity variations related to connection or lack thereof to the particle source. These results indicate an offset between the acceleration regions of ions and electrons of the same order of magnitude as that observed in the γ-ray events. However, if the particle event originates at the magnetic footpoints of an interplanetary coronal mass ejection, the ACE observations do not exhibit this offset, suggesting that different magnetic geometry or acceleration processes may be present in those regions.

We present an analysis of dispersionless flux dropouts in solar energetic particles (SEPs) associated with impulsive solar flares observed by ACE/ULEIS and Wind/STEP. These flux dropouts are thought to be caused by an observer encountering magnetic field lines that are populated with particles or unpopulated, depending on their connection to the source. Since ACE and Wind typically have spatial separations less than or of order a correlation scale of the turbulent component of the interplanetary magnetic field (Lc ~ 106 km), they are ideal for studying the effects of the turbulent magnetic field on impulsive SEP events, especially those that exhibit intensity dropouts. By examining the timing of the dropout events seen by each spacecraft and accounting for the convection of frozen-in magnetic fields by the solar wind, we have found that both spacecraft generally see the same event features when they are separated by less than Lc and different features when they are separated by more than Lc. This is consistent with the propagation of impulsive SEPs along random walking magnetic lines of force. We find that dropouts occur in approximately half of the impulsive SEP events in our sample, indicating that this is a fairly common phenomenon. Moreover, we find that there is not a clear correspondence between the timing of these events and changes in the local interplanetary magnetic field more often than random coincidence. This supports the idea that intensity dropouts are mostly caused by field line mixing rather than by localized magnetic structures.

Using simple analytic considerations, numerical simulations, and data analysis, we discuss the physics of charged-particle acceleration by turbulent, rippled, collisionless shocks. The standard theory of diffusive shock acceleration predicts that the energetic-particle energy spectrum, in the region of shocked plasma, is a function of the plasma density jump. But because of the interaction of the shock with plasma turbulence, the jump in plasma density varies in time and from place to place on the shock front. Here we show that for reasonable parameters, the shape of the energetic-particle energy spectra downstream of any given shock is nearly independent of location along the shock front, even though the density jump varies. This is because energetic particles are mobile and sample many turbulent fluctuations during their acceleration. This result holds for shocks having smaller scale ripples than the large-scale radius of curvature (Dc) of the shock. Thus, it applies to the interpretation of spacecraft observations of traveling interplanetary shocks provided the spacecraft separation is less than Dc. This result is confirmed with simple analytic considerations and numerical simulations that solve the combined magnetohydrodynamic equations for a plasma and energetic test particles using the well-known Parker transport equation. This conclusion is further supported by our analysis of ACE and Geotail observations of a few interplanetary shocks.

Cosmic rays are ubiquitous in space, and the essential similarity of their energy spectra in many different regions places significant general constraints on the mechanisms for their acceleration and confinement. Diffusive shock acceleration is at present the most successful acceleration mechanism proposed, and, together with transport in Kolmogorov turbulence, can account for the universal specta. A unique laboratory for studying the acceleration and transport of charged particles is the outer heliosphere, including the solar wind termination shock and heliosheath. A widely accepted paradigm for the transport and acceleration of energetic particles in the heliosphere has evolved over the last few decades. This picture has successfully explained many features of the modulation of galactic cosmic rays and the transport and acceleration of anomalous cosmic rays at the solar-wind termination shock. Recent Voyager observations near and beyond the termination shock have revealed new, and in some cases, unexpected phenomena which have led to questions concerning the established paradigm. The physical interpretation of the observations requires a blunt termination shock, rapid inward motion of the shock and temporal variations over time scales ranging from hours to 22 years. Incorporation of these into the physics has promise of explaining most, if not, all of the observed phenomena while retaining the advantages of the termination shock paradigm for both galactic and anomalous cosmic rays.

We present ACE/ULEIS and Wind/STEP observations of a new and unusual feature of energetic ions between 0.02 and 3 MeV nucleon-1 associated with impulsive solar flares. In addition to the usual velocity dispersion associated with the transit in the heliospheric magnetic field of energetic particles from a small localized source on the Sun, these events also show intermittent behavior that may be related to the magnetic flux tube structure of the solar wind. These are anomalous bursts of low-energy particles, which we call "tassels." Tassels are enhancements of ions extending to much lower energies than those associated with the main event. In one year of data from 2000 June to 2001 July, we have identified two events with tassels, both of which occur simultaneously with interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs). The tassels may be a superposition of two events, either gradual and impulsive or two impulsive events. Since the tassels could be interpreted as ions arriving earlier than those with the same energy in the main velocity dispersion, we suggest that the tassels occur when the spacecraft intercepts a flux tube with a relatively shorter path length. The decrease in path length may be caused by a decrease in scattering or a shorter travel distance, since flux tubes may be distorted by the passage of the ICME. These tassel events may allow us to infer some of the structure of the ICME.

We address the physics of intensity and anisotropy variations in energetic particles near the solar wind termination shock. We show that rapid, large-amplitude, and highly anisotropic particle events seen upstream of the shock can be understood in terms of the passage across the spacecraft of different filled and unfilled magnetic flux tubes. These are created by large-scale magnetic irregularities that are advected passed the spacecraft and compress as they cross the termination shock. We find significant streaming anisotropies of 50 keV-1 MeV protons in the unshocked solar wind, with front-to-back intensity ratios exceeding a factor of 2, for 5 day averaged values. In contrast, downstream of the shock, our results indicate that the particle distributions are much more uniform and isotropic. However, there is a large-scale, nonzero azimuthal particle anisotropy downstream of the shock. This is caused by the nonradial heliosheath plasma flow necessitated by the nonspherical shock. Our results are consistent with recent Voyager 1 observations.

We present the results of numerical simulations of solar energetic particles (SEPs) moving in a model heliospheric magnetic field. We find that the onset time of a given SEP event can be sooner than estimated by assuming that particles move along the usual Parker spiral, which is generally believed to be the earliest time. This is because for a random magnetic field, some magnetic field lines are shorter than the nominal (Parker spiral) length. This is important with regard to the physics of injection and/or acceleration at the origin of the particle event.

We show that two widely used but apparently different models of the turbulent interplanetary magnetic field are closely related. One of these is the so-called quasi-static turbulence model, in which interplanetary magnetic field fluctuations are generated at a source surface near the Sun by random transverse plasma motions (such as supergranulation at the solar photosphere or perhaps reconnection) and are thereafter carried outward at a uniform constant speed in a radial solar wind. The other model of heliospheric magnetic turbulence is known as the two-component model, in which the random part of the field is decomposed into components along the field (slab fluctuations) and normal to it. Both models have provided us with useful simplified parameterizations of interplanetary fluctuations, and both enter into calculations that show good agreement with observations. Here we show that by properly choosing the temporal and spatial dependence of the transverse velocity field at the solar source surface in the quasi-static model, we can generate a two-component model (as well as many others). In particular, the anisotropy observed in the turbulence can be incorporated into both models. This study provides us with important insights that increase our understanding of turbulence and energetic particle transport in the heliosphere.

The physics of charged-particle acceleration from near-thermal to much higher energies by collisionless shocks is investigated using large-scale self-consistent plasma simulations. The focus here is on acceleration at shocks that move normal to the average magnetic field. It is shown that a fraction of thermal protons incident on a perpendicular shock are readily accelerated to energies much higher than the ram energy of the incident plasma. This indicates that there is not an injection problem at perpendicular shocks. It is found that some (initially) thermal protons are reflected by the shock and move upstream along magnetic field lines that are multiply connected to other locations on the shock. This leads to efficient acceleration and results in a distribution function, averaged over a large spatial region downstream of the shock, having a high-energy tail that originates directly from the thermal population. It can be concluded from our results that perpendicular shocks are important sites of particle acceleration in a wide variety of astrophysical plasmas.

We discuss the physics associated with the motion of the radial magnetic field footpoints at the Sun and its relation to the heliospheric magnetic field. Using the observed photospheric convection spectrum, we construct a model for the heliospheric magnetic field and relate it to observations made by Ulysses in the outer heliosphere in the fast solar wind during solar minimum. We find excellent agreement between both the magnitude and the radial variation of the large-scale transverse magnetic variance observed by Ulysses compared to the model calculations using the observed supergranulation velocity spectrum. This suggests that the model represents the physics well. We then calculate the spatial diffusion coefficient associated with the observed magnetic footpoint motion at the solar photosphere. The calculations are based on the motion of passive additives embedded within the transverse photospheric flows. Two different models for the temporal evolution of the transverse velocity are considered. We find that the diffusion coefficient associated with these motions is in the range κ ≈ 1500-1920 km2 s-1. This is approximately 3 times larger than is commonly used in models of the long-term solar magnetic field. It is also larger than is inferred from actual measurements of the dispersion of magnetic features on the Sun. The cause of this discrepancy is not yet clear.
