We construct dynamical black hole solutions to Einstein Equations in presence of matter in the large D limit. The matter stress tensors that we consider are weak in the sense that they source asymptotic spacetimes with internal curvatures of the order of $$ \mathcal{O} $$ O (D0). Apart from this, we work with a generic stress tensor demanding only that the stress tensor satisfies the conservation equations. The black hole solutions are obtained in terms of the dual non-gravitational picture of membranes propagating in spacetimes equivalent to the asymptotes of the black holes. We obtain the metric solutions to the second sub-leading order in 1/D. We also obtain the equations governing the dual membranes up to the first sub-leading order in 1/D.

We use the recipe of arXiv:1003.2974 to find half-BPS near-horizon geometries in the t$^3$ model of $N=2$, $D=4$ gauged supergravity, and explicitely construct some new examples. Among these are black holes with noncompact horizons, but also with spherical horizons that have conical singularities (spikes) at one of the two poles. A particular family of them is extended to the full black hole geometry. Applying a double-Wick rotation to the near-horizon region, we obtain solutions with NUT charge that asymptote to curved domain walls with AdS$_3$ world volume. These new solutions may provide interesting testgrounds to address fundamental questions related to quantum gravity and holography., Comment: 23 pages, 2 figures. v2: minor corrections, references added

Dispersion analysis of Lamb waves propagating in anisotropic functionally graded plates with transverse inhomogeneity reveals that the high frequency asymptotes associated with the interfacial Stoneley waves disappear, while in stratified plates the corresponding high frequency asymptotes exist. The analysis utilizes a variant of the Cauchy sextic formalism coupled with the exponential fundamental matrices for constructing explicit dispersion equation.

We present an example of demonstration for the basin boundaries in classical rearrangement scattering with particular emphasis on the breakup channel. Whereas the basin boundaries of the other arrangement channels are given by stable manifolds of periodic orbits in the interaction region, the basin boundary of the breakup channel is given by the stable manifold of a particular subset in the set of final asymptotes. The geometry of this boundary surface is presented in detail. Further, we discuss the transition to chaos at the energetic threshold of the breakup channel and the related basin boundary metamorphosis.

Visualizations of reduced-order representations of stratified wakes of Reynolds number $$Re \in \{5,25,100\}\times 10^3$$ are presented at a fixed internal Froude number. The reduced-order representations are constructed by applying proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) to numerical datasets that are high-resolution, three-dimensional and time-dependent. Due to the transient nature of the flow, the dynamics to be represented are highly non-stationary, posing a challenge for the effectiveness of POD. The translational symmetry inherent in the computational configuration is utilized for the POD analysis. This technique turns out to be effective in terms of improving the convergence of energy content represented by the POD modes and enhancing the interpretability of the temporal dynamics. Individual POD modes representing distinct dynamics of various scales are visualized. In the turbulent region, visualizations of the reconstructed vertical vorticity fields suggest that the dominant length scale of flow structures decreases with the modal index. For internal wave motions, visualizations of the reconstructed vertical velocity fields show the opposite trend, as the wavelength of internal waves observed in the wake’s ambient increases with the modal index. The temporal coefficients for a given mode are observed to vary minimally between $$Re = 2.5\times 10^4$$ and $$10^5$$ , suggesting a potential asymptote of the large-scale temporal dynamics in terms of Reynolds number.

A relation connecting stress intensity factors (SIF) with displacement intensity factors (DIF) at the crack front is derived by solving a pseudodifferential equation connecting stress and displacement discontinuity fields for a plane crack in an elastic anisotropic medium with arbitrary anisotropy. It is found that at a particular point on the crack front, the vector valued SIF is uniquely determined by the corresponding DIF evaluated at the same point.

Passive magnetic channel is a kind of beam focusing elements in a cyclotron. It consists of several soft iron bars that are magnetized by the main field in a cyclotron. In this paper, we proposed a topology optimization method to design the pole shape in passive magnetic channel, this method does not require any fixed geometry pattern or initial design. The nonlinear static magnetic finite-element analysis model is used to calculate the objective magnetic field function. Persuade iron material with variable density is used to describe the iron distribution during the iteration. Method of Moving Asymptotes (MMA) is used to optimize the control variable of iron density distribution on magnetic channel cross-section. In three numerical examples, magnetic channels for a 250 MeV superconducting cyclotron is provided, where the design goal is to provide the given magnetic field gradient and bending angle. The relationship between the design goal and the pole shape pattern is discussed. It reveals that magnetic channel pattern with only 2 iron bars is possible for some design goals.

This paper incorporates hyperelastic materials, nonlinear kinematics, and preloads in eigenfrequency constrained density–based topology optimization. The formulation allows for initial finite deformations and subsequent small harmonic oscillations. The optimization problem is solved by the method of moving asymptotes, and the gradients are calculated using the adjoint method. Both simple and degenerate eigenfrequencies are considered in the sensitivity analysis. A well-posed topology optimization problem is formulated by filtering the volume fraction field. Numerical issues associated with excessive distortion and spurious eigenmodes in void regions are reduced by removing low volume fraction elements. The optimization objective is to maximize stiffness subject to a lower bound on the fundamental eigenfrequency. Numerical examples show that the eigenfrequencies drastically change with the load magnitude, and that the optimization is able to produce designs with the desired fundamental eigenfrequency.

A planar system has been proposed in the paper Rankin et al. (Nonlinear Dyn 66:681–688, 2011) to understand the canard explosion detected in a 6D aircraft ground dynamics model. A specific feature of this minimal 2D system is a critical manifold with a single fold and an asymptote. In this paper, we provide a high-order analytical prediction (in fact, up to any wanted order) of the canard explosion in this system. Using a nonlinear time transformation method, we are able to approximate not only the critical parameter value, but also the critical manifold in the phase space. The comparison of our theoretical results with the corresponding numerical continuations shows a very good agreement.

Observance of Stoneley waves at the guided wave dispersion in stratified plates containing layers with alternating contrast physical properties is analyzed by applying Cauchy sextic formalism coupled with the exponential fundamental matrix method. Additional high-frequency asymptotes related to appearing interfacial Stoneley waves are detected and analyzed. Comparison with the case when Stoneley waves do not exist is presented.

We show that kinematics of charged particles allows us to model the growth of particles' energy by consecutive particle-splits, once a spherical mirror as a perfectly reflective boundary is placed outside a charged black hole. We consider a charged version of the Penrose process, in which a charged particle decays into two fragments, one of them has negative energy and the other has positive energy that is larger than that of the parent particle. The confinement system with the mirror makes the particles' energy amplified each time a split of the parent particle occurs. Thus, the energy is a monotonically increasing function of time. We construct new families of $\text{AdS}_2 \times S^2 \times S^2$ solutions with 4 supercharges in Type II supergravities. We show that subclasses of these solutions can be interpreted in terms of defect branes embedded in 4d $\mathcal{N} = 4 $ SYM, or orbifolds thereof. This is explicitly realised by showing that the solutions asymptote locally to $\text{AdS}_5 \times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_n$, in Type IIB, or its T-dual background, in Type IIA. The latter is a Gaiotto-Maldacena geometry realised on an intersection of D4 and NS5 branes. We extend the Type IIA solutions to include D6 branes, and interpret them as describing backreacted baryon vertices within 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ CFTs living in D4-NS5-D6 intersections. We propose explicit quiver quantum mechanics in which the defect branes play the role of colour branes, with the D4 branes of the D4-NS5-D6 intersection becoming flavour branes. These quivers are used to compute the degeneracies of the ground states of the dual super conformal quantum mechanics, that are shown to agree with the holographic expressions., 40 pages, 3 figures

We present analytical formulae for the first and second derivatives of the Helmholtz free energy of non-relativistic ideal Fermi-gas. Important thermodynamic quantities such as heat capacity, sound velocity, heat capacity ratio and others can be easily expressed through the derivatives. We demonstrate correct ideal Boltzmann gas and low--temperature Fermi-gas asymptotes and derive corrections to thermodynamic functions for these limiting cases. Numerical computations of thermodynamic properties of ideal Fermi-gas can be accurately performed using the developed freely available Python module ifg.

Entropy is intrinsic to the geographical distribution of a biological species. A species distribution with higher entropy involves more uncertainty, i.e., is more gradually constrained by the environment. Species distribution modelling tries to yield models with low uncertainty but normally has to reduce uncertainty by increasing their complexity, which is detrimental for another desirable property of the models, parsimony. By modelling the distribution of 18 vertebrate species in mainland Spain, we show that entropy may be computed along the forward-backwards stepwise selection of variables in Logistic Regression Models to check whether uncertainty is reduced at each step. In general, a reduction of entropy was produced asymptotically at each step of the model. This asymptote could be used to distinguish the entropy attributable to the species distribution from that attributable to model misspecification. We discussed the use of fuzzy entropy for this end because it produces results that are commensurable between species and study areas. Using a stepwise approach and fuzzy entropy may be helpful to counterbalance the uncertainty and the complexity of the models. The model yielded at the step with the lowest fuzzy entropy combines the reduction of uncertainty with parsimony, which results in high efficiency.

A cosmic no-hair theorem for all initially contracting, spatially homogeneous, orthogonal Bianchi Cosmologies is derived - which shows that all such Universes asymptote to a spatially flat, isotropic Universe with the inclusion of a shear viscous stress. This establishes a new mechanism of isotropisation in a contracting Universe, which does not take recourse to an ekpyrosis-like mechanism using an effective ultra-stiff equation of state fluid, that is, one in which the pressure is much greater than the energy density., 9 pages

Consider a sequence of $n$ random variables $\mathrm{X}\ {\buildrel \triangle\over=} (X_{1},\cdots, X_{n})$ forming a random field (RF). This paper addresses the following two questions. 1) Given a target classification reliability, what is the minimum number of samples, on average, required to classify X? 2) What is an optimal sequence of sampling the random variables such that a classification decision can be formed with the fewest number of samples? This paper addresses these questions in the asymptote of large $n$ .

The modern definition of enzymology is synonymous with the Michaelis-Menten equation instituted by Leonor Michaelis and Maud Menten. Most textbooks, or chapters within, discussing enzymology start with the derivation of the equation under the assumption of rapid equilibrium (as done by Michaelis-Menten) or steady state (as modified by Briggs and Haldane) conditions to highlight the importance of this equation as the bedrock on which interpretation of enzyme kinetic results is dependent. However, few textbooks or monographs take the effort of placing the equation within its right historical context and discuss the assumptions that have gone into its institution. This guide will dwell on these in substantial detail. Further, this guide will attempt to instil a sense of appreciation for the mathematical curve rectangular hyperbola, its unique attributes and how ubiquitous the curve is in biological systems. To conclude, this guide will discuss the limitations of the equation, and the method it embodies, and trace the journey of how investigators are attempting to move beyond the steady-state approach and the Michaelis-Menten equation into full progress curve, pre-steady state and single-turnover kinetic analysis to obtain greater insights into enzyme kinetics and catalysis.

We analyze a one-dimensional XXZ spin chain in a disordered magnetic field. As the main probes of the system's behavior we use the sensitivity of eigenstates to adiabatic transformations, as expressed through the fidelity susceptibility, in conjunction with the low frequency asymptotes of the spectral function. We identify a region of maximal chaos -- with exponentially enhanced susceptibility -- which separates the many-body localized phase from the diffusive ergodic phase. This regime is characterized by slow transport and we argue that the presence of such slow dynamics is incompatible with the localization transition in the thermodynamic limit. Instead of localizing, the system appears to enter a universal subdiffusive relaxation regime at moderate values of disorder, where the spectral function of the local longitudinal magnetization is inversely proportional to the frequency, corresponding to logarithmic in time relaxation of its auto-correlation function.

We classify AdS$_3$ solutions preserving $\mathcal{N}=(8,0)$ supersymmetry in ten and eleven dimensions and find the local form of each of them. These include the AdS$_3\times$S$^6$ solution of \cite{Dibitetto:2018ftj} and the embeddings of AdS$_3$ into AdS$_4\times$S$^7$, AdS$_5\times$S$^5$, AdS$_7/\mathbb{Z}_k\times$S$^4$ and its IIA reduction within AdS$_7$. More interestingly we find solutions preserving the superconformal algebras $\mathfrak{f}_4$, $\mathfrak{su}(1,1|4)$, $\mathfrak{osp}(4^*|4)$ on certain squashings of the 7-sphere. The most important unanswered questions in turbulence regard the nature of turbulent flow in the limit of infinite Reynolds number. The Princeton superpipe (PSP) data comprise 26 velocity profiles that cover three orders of magnitude in the Reynolds number from $Re=19\,639$, to $Re=20\,088\,000$ based on pipe radius and pipe centreline velocity. In this paper classical mixing length theory is combined with a new mixing length model of the turbulent shear stress to solve the streamwise momentum equation and the solution is used to approximate the PSP velocity profiles. The model velocity profile is uniformly valid from the wall to the pipe centreline and comprises five free parameters that are selected through a minimization process to provide an accurate approximation to each of the 26 profiles. The model profile is grounded in the momentum equation and allows the velocity derivative, Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy production to be studied. The results support the conclusion that logarithmic velocity behaviour near the wall is not present in the data below a pipe Reynolds number somewhere between $Re=59\,872$, and $Re=87\,150$. Above $Re=87\,150$, the data show a very clear, nearly logarithmic, region. But even at the highest Reynolds numbers there is still a weak algebraic dependence of the intermediate portion of the velocity profile on both the near-wall and outer flow length scales. One of the five parameters in the model profile is equivalent to the well-known Kármán constant, $k$. The parameter $k$ increases almost monotonically from $k=0.4034$ at $Re=87\,150$ to $k=0.4190$ at $Re=20\,088\,000$, with an average value, $k=0.4092$. The variation of the remaining four model parameters is relatively small and, with all five parameters fixed at average values, the model profile reproduces the entire velocity data set and the wall friction reasonably well. With optimal values of the parameters used for each model profile, the fit to the PSP survey data is very good. Transforming the model velocity profile using the group, $u/u_{0}\rightarrow ku/u_{0}$, $y^{+}\rightarrow ky^{+}$ and $R_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}\rightarrow kR_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}$ where $R_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}$ is the friction Reynolds number, leads to a reduced expression for the velocity profile. When the reduced profile is cast in outer variables, the physical velocity profile is expressed in terms of $\ln (y/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF})$ and a new shape function $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}(y/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF})$. In the limit of infinite Reynolds number, the velocity profile asymptotes to plug flow with a vanishingly thin viscous wall layer and a continuous derivative everywhere. The shape function evaluated at the pipe centreline is used to produce a new friction law with an additive constant that depends on the Kármán constant and a wall damping length scale.

A phononic crystal (PnC) is an artificially engineered periodic structure that exhibits extraordinary phenomena, such as a phononic band gap. The phononic band gap refers to a certain range of frequencies within which mechanical waves cannot propagate through the PnC. The main purpose of this paper is to propose a topology optimization formulation for phononic band gap maximization that simultaneously takes into account a target driving frequency. In the proposed topology optimization formulation, a relative band gap is considered as an objective function to be maximized. In addition, an equality constraint is imposed on the central frequency of the band gap. The topology optimization problem is solved using the globally convergent method of moving asymptotes, which is a gradient-based optimization algorithm. Numerical examples are computed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed topology optimization formulation.

We present 2.5-D global, ideal MHD simulations of magnetically and rotationally driven protostellar jets from Keplerian accretion discs, wherein only the initial magnetic field strength at the inner radius of the disc, $B_{\rm i}$, is varied. Using the AMR-MHD code AZEUS, we self-consistently follow the jet evolution into the observational regime ($>10^3\,\mathrm{AU}$) with a spatial dynamic range of $\sim6.5\times10^5$. The simulations reveal a three-component outflow: 1) A hot, dense, super-fast and highly magnetised 'jet core'; 2) a cold, rarefied, trans-fast and highly magnetised 'sheath' surrounding the jet core and extending to a tangential discontinuity; and 3) a warm, dense, trans-slow and weakly magnetised shocked ambient medium entrained by the advancing bow shock. The simulations reveal power-law relationships between $B_{\rm i}$ and the jet advance speed, $v_{\rm jet}$, the average jet rotation speed, $\langle v_\varphi\rangle$, as well as fluxes of mass, momentum, and kinetic energy. Quantities that do not depend on $B_{\rm i}$ include the plasma-$\beta$ of the transported material which, in all cases, seems to asymptote to order unity. Jets are launched by a combination of the 'magnetic tower' and 'bead-on-a-wire' mechanisms, with the former accounting for most of the jet acceleration---even for strong fields---and continuing well beyond the fast magnetosonic point. At no time does the leading bow shock leave the domain and, as such, these simulations generate large-scale jets that reproduce many of the observed properties of protostellar jets including their characteristic speeds and transported fluxes., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures. In this paper, new, exact expressions for the probability density functions and the cumulative distribution functions of the ratio of random envelopes involving the $\alpha $ - $\mu $ , $\eta $ - $\mu $ , and $\kappa $ - $\mu $ fading distributions are derived. The expressions are obtained in terms of easily computable infinite series and also in terms of the multivariable Fox H-function. Some special cases of these ratios, namely, Hoyt/Hoyt, $\eta $ - $\mu $ /Nakagami- ${m}$ , $\kappa $ - $\mu $ /Nakagami- ${m}$ , $\kappa $ - $\mu / \eta $ - $\mu $ with an integer $\mu $ for the $\eta $ - $\mu $ variate, $\eta $ - $\mu / \eta $ - $\mu $ with an integer $\mu $ for only one of the $\eta $ - $\mu $ , and their reciprocals are found in novel exact closed-form expressions . In addition, simple closed-form expressions for the asymptotes of the probability density functions and cumulative distribution functions of all ratios, both for the lower and upper tails of the distributions are derived. In the same way, asymptotes for the bit error rate on a binary signaling channel are obtained in closed-form expressions. To demonstrate the practical utility of these new formulations, an application example is provided. In particular, the secrecy capacity of a Gaussian wire-tap channel used for device-to-device and vehicle-to-vehicle communications is characterized using data obtained from field measurements conducted at 5.8 GHz.

A general quantum-mechanical formalism is reviewed for double electron capture from heliumlike atomic systems by fast nuclei. The development is carried out with and without the distorted wave theory by fulfilling the correct boundary conditions. These refer to the required asymptotic behaviors of the total scattering wave functions and their appropriate connections to the perturbation interactions that produce the transitions from the initial to the final states of the system. In this general formulation any choice is allowed for the pairs of the distorting potentials and the related distorted wave functions as long as the correct boundary conditions are satisfied. This is the case with the four-body versions of several most frequently used methods (continuum distorted wave: CDW-4B, boundary-corrected continuum intermediate state: BCIS-4B, Born distorted wave: BDW-4B, continuum distorted wave initial/final state: CDW-EIS/EFS-4B, and the boundary-corrected first Born: CB1-4B). A comparative analysis of these methods makes in evidence both their similarities and differences. For example, the most illustrative is the juxtaposition of the post BDW-4B and CDW-EIS-4B methods. They share the same distorting potential in the exit channel. The only difference is in the coordinates from the Coulomb logarithmic phases in the initial distorted wave functions. This difference is completely negligible in the asymptotic scattering regions. Yet, for e.g. double electron capture from helium by alpha particles, the total cross sections from these two methods differ by 1–3 orders of magnitudes. The BDW-4B method is in agreement with experimental data at high impact energies. In sharp contrast, within its validity domain of impact energies, the CDW-EIS-4B method underestimates the measured data by orders of magnitude. This shows that what matters is not solely the correct asymptotes of distorted wave functions, but rather how they affect the contributions to the integrals over the entire regions in the T-matrix elements for total cross sections. Such insights help understand the assessment of the overall validity and relative performance of various methods, and can provide a versatile guidance for improving the existing approximations for double charge exchange in fast ion–atom collisions.

The problem of propagation of acoustic waves in a liquid with gas bubbles covered by a viscoelastic shell has been considered. The dependence of the wave number on the perturbation frequency has been found. The low-frequency asymptotes for the phase velocity and the attenuation coefficient have been deduced. The dependence of the equilibrium sound velocity on the perturbation frequency and size of covered bubbles has been established and illustrated. A comparison of the theory with the known experimental data is presented.

How different are the results of constant-rate resetting of anomalous-diffusion processes in terms of their ensemble-averaged versus time-averaged mean-squared displacements (MSDs versus TAMSDs) and how does the process of stochastic resetting impact nonergodicity? These are the main questions addressed in this study. Specifically, we examine, both analytically and by stochastic simulations, the implications of resetting on the MSD-and TAMSD-based spreading dynamics of fractional Brownian motion (FBM) with a long-time memory, of heterogeneous diffusion processes (HDPs) with a power-law-like space-dependent diffusivityD(x) =D0|x|γ, and of their “combined” process of HDP-FBM. We find, i.a., that the resetting dynamics of originally ergodic FBM for superdiffusive choices of the Hurst exponent develops distinct disparities in the scaling behavior and magnitudes of the MSDs and mean TAMSDs, indicating so-called weak ergodicity breaking (WEB). For subdiffusive HDPs we also quantify the nonequivalence of the MSD and TAMSD, and additionally observe a new trimodal form of the probability density function (PDF) of particle’ displacements. For all three reset processes (FBM, HDPs, and HDP-FBM) we compute analytically and verify by stochastic computer simulations the short-time (normal and anomalous) MSD and TAMSD asymptotes (making conclusions about WEB) as well as the long-time MSD and TAMSD plateaus, reminiscent of those for “confined” processes. We show that certain characteristics of the reset processes studied are functionally similar, despite the very different stochastic nature of their nonreset variants. Importantly, we discover nonmonotonicity of the ergodicity breaking parameter EB as a function of the resetting rater. For all the reset processes studied, we unveil a pronounced resetting-induced nonergodicity with a maximum of EB at intermediaterand EB ∼ (1/r)-decay at largervalues. Together with the emerging MSD-versus-TAMSD disparity, this pronouncedr-dependence of the EB parameter can be an experimentally testable prediction. We conclude via discussing some implications of our results to experimental systems featuring resetting dynamics.

We show that certain characteristics of these reset processes are functionally similar despite a different stochastic nature of their nonreset variants. Importantly, we discover nonmonotonicity of the ergodicity-breaking parameter EB as a function of the resetting rate $r$. For all reset processes studied we unveil a pronounced resetting-induced nonergodicity with a maximum of EB at intermediate $r$ and $\mathrm{EB}\ensuremath{\sim}(1/r)$-decay at large $r$. Alongside the emerging MSD-versus-TAMSD disparity, this $r$-dependence of EB can be an experimentally testable prediction. We conclude by discussing some implications to experimental systems featuring resetting dynamics.

In this article, a design method of multi-material compliant mechanism is studied. Material distribution with different elastic modulus is used to meet the rigid and flexible requirements of compliant mechanism at the same time. The solid isotropic material with penalization (SIMP) model is used to parameterize the design domain. The expressions for the stiffness matrix and equivalent elastic modulus under multi-material conditions are proposed. The least square error (LSE) between the deformed and target displacement of the control points is defined as the objective function, and the topology optimization design model of multi-material compliant mechanism is established. The oversaturation problem in the volume constraint is solved by pre-setting the priority of each material, and the globally convergent method of moving asymptotes (GCMMA) is used to solve the problem. Widely studied numerical examples are conducted, which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This contribution presents an asymptotic formulation for the stick-slip behaviour of incomplete contacts under oscillatory variation of normal load, moment, shear load and differential bulk tension. The asymptotic description allows us not only to approximate the size of the slip zones during the steady-state of a cyclic problem without knowledge of the geometry or contact law, but provides a solution when all known analytical solutions for incomplete contacts reach their limitations, that is, in the presence of a varying moment and a differential bulk tension large enough to reverse the direction of slip at one end of the contact. The three-dimensional turbulence structure of the canonical daytime atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) reflects the balance between shear and buoyancy turbulence production characterized by ), roll coherence decreases and the vertical scales asymptote to the canonical moderately convective ABL.

We study the approach to scaling in axion string networks in the radiation era, through measuring the root-mean-square velocity $v$ as well as the scaled mean string separation $x$. We find good evidence for a fixed point in the phase-space analysis in the variables $(x,v)$, providing a strong indication that standard scaling is taking place. We show that the approach to scaling can be well described by a two parameter velocity-one-scale (VOS) model, and show that the values of the parameters are insensitive to the initial state of the network. The string length has also been commonly expressed in terms of a dimensionless string length density $\zeta$, proportional to the number of Hubble lengths of string per Hubble volume. In simulations with initial conditions far from the fixed point $\zeta$ is still evolving after half a light-crossing time, which has been interpreted in the literature as a long-term logarithmic growth. We show that all our simulations, even those starting far from the fixed point, are accounted for by a VOS model with an asymptote of $\zeta_*=1.20\pm0.09$ (calculated from the string length in the cosmic rest frame) and $v_* = 0.609\pm 0.014$., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. v2: Minor changes, matches published version

A central question regarding Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) is whether they are a separate category to Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies, or just their natural continuation towards low stellar masses. In this letter, we show that the rotation curve of the gas rich UDG AGC 242019 is well fit by a dark matter halo with inner slope that asymptotes to -0.54, and that such fit provides a concentration parameter that matches theoretical expectations. This finding, together with previously works in which shallow inner profiles are derived for UDGs, shows that the structural properties of these galaxies are like other observed LSBs. UDGs show slowly rising rotation curves and this favours formation scenarios in which internal processes, such as SNae driven gas outflows, are acting to modify UDGs profiles., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We calculate Sorkin's spacetime entanglement entropy of a Gaussian scalar field for complementary regions in the 2d cylinder spacetime and show that it has the Calabrese-Cardy form. We find that the cut-off dependent term is universal when we use a covariant UV cut-off. In addition, we show that the relative size-dependent term exhibits complementarity. Standard scattering theory (SST) in atomic, molecular, and optical physics is incomplete in that it does not adequately describe the behavior of the wave function at macroscopic distances from the scattering reaction volume, nor does it describe the manipulation of ejected particles in fields applied after the collision or the operation of modern detectors which employ external steering fields. Here, we extend formal scattering theory by incorporating semiclassical wave function propagation to and from macroscopic distances. This theory then is applicable to modern detection methods and to the pre- and post-collision manipulation by external static fields or time-varying laser fields. Furthermore, the standard approach is time independent but the increasing use of projectiles (particles, photons) defining a time-dependent scattering potential demands an overtly time-dependent approach. Here such a time-dependent theory describing the complete experimental procedure is developed and, by consistent use of semiclassical approximations in the asymptotic zones, is connected explicitly to the well-known time-independent equations of SST. Interference of matter waves in the continuum has been studied intensively and can be considered also as a scattering problem. Our semiclassical approach allows us to make direct contact to analogous interference experiments with classical light.

We study the dynamics near the central singularity in spherically symmetric collapse of a massless scalar field toward Schwarzschild black hole formation. The equations of motion take different simplified forms in the early and late stages of the singularity curve. We present a simple criterion to determine if the graph of a rational function of the form $ f(x)=\frac{ax+b}{cx+d} $ includes a reflection of the reciprocal function $ r(x)=\frac{1}{x} $ over the $ x $-axis. In addition, we determine an algebraic expression for the factor by which the graph of $ y=r(x) $ is stretched vertically to produce the graph of $ y=f(x) $.

Dynamic states with intermittent oscillations consist of a chaotic mixture of large amplitude relaxation oscillations grouped in bursts, and between them, small-amplitude sinusoidal oscillations, or even the quiescent parts, known as gaps. In this study, intermittent dynamic states were generated in Bray–Liebhafsky (BL) oscillatory reaction in an isothermal continuously-fed, well-stirred tank reactor (CSTR) controled by changes of specific flow rate. The intermittent states were found between two regular periodic states and obtained for specific flow rate values from 0.020 to 0.082 min−1 . Phenomenological analysis based on the quantitative characteristics of intermittent oscillations, as well as, the largest Lyapunov exponents calculated from experimentally obtained time series, both indicated the same type of behavior. Namely, fully developed chaos arises when approaching to the vertical asymptote which is somewhere between two bifurcations. Hence, this study proposes described route to fully developed chaos in the Bray-Liebhafsky oscillatory reaction as an explanation for experimentally observed intermittent dynamics. This is in correlation with our previously obtained results where the most chaotic intermittent chaos was achieved between the periodic oscillatory dynamic state and stable steady state, generated in BL under CSTR conditions by varying temperature and inflow potassium iodate concentration. Moreover, it was shown that, besides the largest Lyapunov exponent, analysis of chaos in experimentally obtained intermittent states can be achieved by a simpler approach which involves using the quantitative characteristics of the BL reaction evolution, that is, the number and length of gaps and bursts obtained for the various values of specific flow rates.

In the study of dispersion forces, nonretarded, retarded and thermal asymptotes with their distinct scaling laws are regarded as cornerstone results governing interactions at different separations. Here, we show that when particles interact in a medium, the influence of retardation is qualitatively different, making it necessary to consider the non-monotonous potential in full. We discuss different regimes for several cases and find an anomalous behaviour of the retarded asymptote. It can change sign, and lead to a trapping potential.

We present a study of the impact of the expansion of deconfined medium on single-gluon emission spectra and the jet suppression factor ($Q_{AA}$) within the BDMPS-Z formalism. These quantities are calculated for three types of media (static medium, exponentially decaying medium and Bjorken expanding medium). The distribution of medium-induced gluons and the jet $Q_{AA}$ are calculated using the evaluation of in-medium evolution with splitting kernels derived from the gluon emission spectra. Scaling behavior of splitting kernels is derived for low-x and high-x regimes in the asymptote of large times and its impact on the resulting jet $Q_{AA}$ is discussed. A classic problem of the motion of a projectile thrown at an angle to the horizon is studied. Air resistance force is taken into account. The quadratic law for the resistance force is used. An analytic approach applies for the investigation. Equations of the projectile motion are solved analytically for an arbitrarily large period of time. The constructed analytical solutions are universal. As a limit case of motion, the vertical asymptote formula is obtained. The value of the vertical asymptote is calculated directly from the initial conditions of motion. There is no need to study the problem numerically. The found analytical solutions are highly accurate over a wide range of parameters. We estimate the impact of the fixation of the total number of sources (quark&ndash, gluon strings) on the long-range rapidity correlations between different observables. In our approach this condition models the fixation of the collision centrality class, what is the usual practice in modern collider experiments, like Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and so on. The estimates are obtained under the assumption of the translational invariance in rapidity, which is usually assumed in mid-rapidity region at high energies. Based on these assumptions, we are developing a technique for the analytical calculation of various average values of extensive and intense variables at high string densities on the transverse lattice, taking into account the effects of string fusion, leading to the formation of string clusters. Using this technique we calculate the asymptotes of the correlations coefficients both between the multiplicities and between the multiplicity and the event-mean transverse momentum of particles in two separated rapidity intervals. As a result, we found that fixing the total number of strings has a significant effect on the behavior of both types of correlations, especially in the case of a uniform distribution of strings in the transverse plane.

Accurate jet-surface interaction noise prediction remains an important aspect of the aircraft design process. This is particularly true for the next generation aircraft configurations, one of which could see the exhaust system tightly integrated to the airframe. Use of Rapid- distortion theory of turbulence (RDT) to determine the radiated sound represents one such approach to model the sound generation/propagation process. Recent work on the application of RDT to the canonical problem of a jet flow interacting with a flat plate trailing edge gave accurate predictions across the frequency and acoustic Mach number range. In this paper we ascertain whether an RDT based model that uses the unsteady surface pressure spectrum as the source term can also be utilized to determine accurate edge noise predictions. Surface pressure based models have been widely used in the Amiet formulation of trailing edge noise. The upstream boundary condition in the RDT formulation enters via a streamwise convected quantity, ω ̃c(τ − y1/U(yT ), yT ), that is an arbitrary function of its arguments. But since the pressure fluctuation possesses an upstream asymptote that decays algebraically faster than curl of the out-of-plane vorticity fluctuation in the local hydrodynamic relation given by Eq. 3.9 in Goldstein, Leib & Afsar (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 824, pp. 477-512, 2017), this latter relation cannot be used to determine the surface pressure near the trailing edge. In this paper we show to obtain this relation using an inversion of Fourier transforms similar to that used in our earlier paper Goldstein, Afsar & Leib (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 736, pp. 532-569, 2013). The relation we obtain shows how the surface pressure spectrum can therefore be related to the velocity fluctuation correlation function.

Analytical expression between the stress intensity factor and displacement intensity factor is derived for an arbitrary shaped plane crack with a smooth crack front. The crack is placed in a medium with an arbitrary elastic anisotropy. The analysis is based on constructing the outer and inner asymptotes for the corresponding surface tractions and displacement discontinuity fields at the crack front. The closed-form pseudodifferential operator of the crack theory along with the associated amplitudes and symbols is constructed.

The high frequency (instantaneous) shear modulus of three-dimensional Yukawa systems is evaluated in a wide parameter range, from the very weakly coupled gaseous state to the strongly coupled fluid at the crystallization point (Yukwa melt). This allows us to quantify how shear rigidity develops with increasing coupling and inter-particle correlations. The radial distribution functions (RDFs) needed to calculate the excess shear modulus have been obtained from extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. MD results demonstrate that fluid RDFs appear quasi-universal on the curves parallel to the melting line of a Yukawa solid, in accordance with the isomorph theory of Roskilde-simple systems. This quasi-universality, allows to simplify considerably calculations of quantities involving integrals of the RDF (elastic moduli represent just one relevant example). The calculated reduced shear modulus grows linearly with the coupling parameter at weak coupling and approaches a quasi-constant asymptote at strong coupling. The Scale-Invariant Vacuum (SIV) theory is based on Weyl's Integrable Geometry, endowed with a gauge scalar field. The main difference between MOND and the SIV theory is that the first considers a global dilatation invariance of space and time, where the scale factor $\lambda$ is a constant, while the second opens the likely possibility that $\lambda$ is a function of time. The key equations of the SIV framework are used here to study the relationship between the Newtonian gravitational acceleration due to baryonic matter $g_{\mathrm{bar}}$ and the observed kinematical acceleration $g_{\mathrm{obs}}$. The relationship is applied to galactic systems of the same age where the Radial Acceleration Relation (RAR), between the $g_{\mathrm{obs}}$ and $g_{\mathrm{bar}}$ accelerations, can be compared with observational data. The SIV theory shows an excellent agreement with observations and with MOND for baryonic gravities $g_{\mathrm{bar}}>10^{-11.5}$ m s$^{-2}$. Below this value, SIV still fully agrees with the observations, as well as with the horizontal asymptote of the RAR for dwarf spheroidals, while this is not the case for MOND. These results support the view that there is no need for dark matter and that the RAR and related dynamical properties of galaxies can be interpreted by a modification of gravitation., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

A limiting temperature of a species can cause the Universe to asymptote to it yielding a deSitter (dS) phase due to macroscopic emergent behavior. The limiting temperature is generic for theories slightly shifted from their conformal point. We demonstrate such behavior in the example of unparticles/Banks-Zaks theory. The unparticles behave like radiation at high energies reducing the Hubble tension, and a cosmological constant (CC) at low energies yielding a model that follows closely {\Lambda}CDM model but due to collective phenomenon. It is technically natural and avoids the no-dS conjecture. We consider a massive particle driven with a constant force in a periodic potential and subjected to a dissipative friction. As a function of the drive and damping, the phase diagram of this paradigmatic model is well known to present a pinned, a sliding, and a bistable regime separated by three distinct bifurcation lines. In physical terms, the average velocity $v$ of the particle is nonzero only if either (i) the driving force is large enough to remove any stable point, forcing the particle to slide, or (ii) there are local minima but the damping is small enough, below a critical damping, for the inertia to allow the particle to cross barriers and follow a limit cycle; this regime is bistable and whether $v > 0$ or $v = 0$ depends on the initial state. In this paper, we focus on the asymptotes of the critical line separating the bistable and the pinned regimes. First, we study its behavior near the "triple point" where the pinned, the bistable, and the sliding dynamical regimes meet. Just below the critical damping we uncover a critical regime, where the line approaches the triple point following a power-law behavior. We show that its exponent is controlled by the normal form of the tilted potential close to its critical force. Second, in the opposite regime of very low damping, we revisit existing results by providing a simple method to determine analytically the exact behavior of the line in the case of a generic potential. The analytical estimates, accurately confirmed numerically, are obtained by exploiting exact soliton solutions describing the orbit in a modified tilted potential which can be mapped to the original tilted washboard potential.
