Search

Several supersonic runaway pulsar wind nebulae (sPWNe) with jet-like extended structures have been recently discovered in X-rays. If these structures are the product of electrons escaping the system and diffusing into the surrounding interstellar medium, they can produce a radio halo extending for several arcmin around the source. We model the expected radio emission in this scenario in the Lighthouse Nebula sPWN. We assume a constant particle injection rate during the source lifetime, and isotropic diffusion into the surrounding medium. Our predictions strongly depend on the low- and high-energy cutoffs given in the particle distribution. Our results indicate that extended radio emission can be detected from the Lighthouse Nebula without the need to invoke extreme values for the model parameters. We provide synthetic synchrotron maps that can be used to constrain these results with observations by current highly sensitive radio instruments., Accepted for publication in A&A

Binary systems of Population III can evolve to microquasars when one of the stars collapses into a black hole. When the compact object accretes matter at a rate greater than the Eddington rate, powerful jets and winds driven by strong radiation pressure should form. We investigate the structure of the jet-wind system for a model of Population III microquasar on scales beyond the jet-wind formation region. Using relativistic hydrodynamic simulations we find that the ratio of kinetic power between the jet and the disk wind determines the configuration of the system. When the power is dominated by the wind, the jet fills a narrow channel, collimated by the dense outflow. When the jet dominates the power of the system, part of its energy is diverted turning the wind into a quasi-equatorial flow, while the jet widens. From the results of our simulations, we implement semi-analytical calculations of the impact of the quasi-equatorial wind on scales of the order of the size of the binary system. Our results indicate that Population III microquasars might inject gamma rays and relativistic particles into the early intergalactic medium, contributing to its reionization at large distances from the binary system., PSC is Fellow of CONICET and PhD student at Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP). Binary systems that host a massive star and a non-accreting pulsar can be powerful non-thermal emitters. The relativistic pulsar wind and the non-relativistic stellar outflows interact along the orbit, producing ultrarelativistic particles that radiate from radio to gamma rays. To properly characterize the physics of these sources, and better understand their emission and impact on the environment, careful modelling of the outflow interactions, spanning a broad range of spatial and temporal scales, is needed. Full 3-dimensional approaches are very computationally expensive, but simpler approximate approaches, while still realistic at the semi-quantitative level, are available. We present here the results of calculations done with a quasi 3-dimensional scheme to compute the evolution of the interacting flows in a region spanning in size up to a thousand times the size of the binary. In particular, we analyze for the first time the role of different eccentricities in the large scale evolution of the shocked flows. We find that the higher the eccentricity, the closer the flows behave like a one-side outflow, which becomes rather collimated for eccentricity values $\gtrsim 0.75$. The simulations also unveil that the pulsar and the stellar winds become fully mixed within the grid for low eccentricity systems, presenting a more stochastic behavior at large scales than in the highly eccentric systems., 18 pages, 11 figures

Context LS 5039 is a powerful high-mass gamma-ray binary that probably hosts a young non-accreting pulsar. However, despite the wealth of data available, the means by which the non-thermal emitter is powered are still unknown. Aims. We use a dynamical-radiative numerical model, and multiwavelength data, to constrain the properties of a hypothetical pulsar wind that would power the non-thermal emitter in LS 5039. Methods. We ran simulations of an ultrarelativistic (weakly magnetized) cold e±-wind that Compton scatters stellar photons and that dynamically interacts with the stellar wind. The effects of energy losses on the unshocked e±-wind dynamics, and the geometry of the two-wind contact discontinuity, are computed for different wind models. The predicted unshocked e±-wind radiation at periastron, when expected to be the highest, is compared to LS 5039 data. Results. The minimum possible radiation from an isotropic cold e±-wind overpredicts the X-ray to gamma-ray fluxes at periastron by a factor of ∼3. In the anisotropic (axisymmetric) wind case X-ray and ≳ 100 MeV data are not violated by wind radiation if the wind axis is at ≲ 20-40° from the line of sight (chance probability of ≲ 6-24%), depending on the anisotropic wind model, or if the wind Lorentz factor ∈ 102 - 103, in which case the wind power can be higher, but it requires e±-multiplicities of ∼106 and 109 for a 10-2 s and 10 s pulsar period, respectively. Conclusions. The studied model predicts that a weakly magnetized cold pulsar e±-wind in LS 5039 should be strongly anisotropic, with either a wind Lorentz factor ∈ 102 - 103 and very high multiplicities or with a fine-tuned wind orientation. A weakly magnetized, cold baryon-dominated wind would be a possible alternative, but then the multiplicities should be rather low, while the baryon-to-e± energy transfer should be very efficient at wind termination. A strongly magnetized cold wind seems to be the most favorable option as it is consistent with recent research on pulsar winds and does not require fine-tuning of the pulsar wind orientation, and the wind multiplicity and Lorentz factor are less constrained., Acknowledgements. [Context]: Gamma-ray binaries are systems that emit nonthermal radiation peaking at energies above 1 MeV. One proposed scenario to explain their emission consists of a pulsar orbiting a massive star, with particle acceleration taking place in shocks produced by the interaction of the stellar and pulsar winds. [Aims]: We develop a semi-Analytical model of the nonthermal emission of the colliding-wind structure, which includes the dynamical effects of orbital motion. We apply the model to a general case and to LS 5039. [Methods]: The model consists of a one-dimensional emitter, the geometry of which is affected by Coriolis forces owing to orbital motion. Two particle accelerators are considered: one at the two-wind standoff location and the other one at the turnover produced by the Coriolis force. Synchrotron and inverse Compton emission is studied taking into account Doppler boosting and absorption processes associated to the massive star. [Results]: If both accelerators are provided with the same energy budget, most of the radiation comes from the region of the Coriolis turnover and beyond, up to a few orbital separations from the binary system. Significant orbital changes of the nonthermal emission are predicted in all energy bands. The model allows us to reproduce some of the LS 5039 emission features, but not all of them. In particular, the MeV radiation is probably too high to be explained by our model alone, the GeV flux is recovered but not its modulation, and the radio emission beyond the Coriolis turnover is too low. The predicted system inclination is consistent with the presence of a pulsar in the binary. [Conclusions]: The model is quite successful in reproducing the overall nonthermal behavior of LS 5039. We conducted an observational campaign towards one of the most massive and luminous colliding wind binaries in the Galaxy, HD~93129A, close to its periastron passage in 2018. During this time the source was predicted to be in its maximum of high-energy emission. Here we present our data analysis from the X-ray satellites \textit{Chandra} and \textit{NuSTAR} and the $\gamma$-ray satellite \textit{AGILE}. High-energy emission coincident with HD~93129A was detected in the X-ray band up to $\sim$18~keV, whereas in the $\gamma$-ray band only upper limits were obtained. We interpret the derived fluxes using a non-thermal radiative model for the wind-collision region. We establish a conservative upper limit for the fraction of the wind kinetic power that is converted into relativistic electron acceleration, $f_\mathrm{NT,e} < 0.02$. In addition, we set a lower limit for the magnetic field in the wind-collision region as $B_\mathrm{WCR} > 0.3$~G. We also argue a putative interpretation of the emission from which we estimate $f_\mathrm{NT,e} \approx 0.006$ and $B_\mathrm{WCR} \approx 0.5$~G. We conclude that multi-wavelength, dedicated observing campaigns during carefully selected epochs are a powerful tool for characterising the relativistic particle content and magnetic field intensity in colliding wind binaries., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The persistent gamma-ray source 4FGL J0647.7−4418 is tentatively associated in the latest Fermi catalogue with the subdwarf O-type X-ray binary HD 49798. However, an active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidate is also mentioned as an alternative identification in updated versions of the catalogue accompanying paper. If the first association were correct, this would add HD 49798 to the handful of currently known gamma-ray binaries, and therefore represent a significant breakthrough not only because of a new member addition, but also because of the apparent white dwarf companion in this system. [Context] Dark matter may consist, at least partially, of primordial black holes formed during the radiation-dominated era. The radiation produced by accretion onto primordial black holes leaves characteristic signatures on the properties of the medium at high redshift, before and after hydrogen recombination. Therefore, reliable modeling of accretion onto these objects is required to obtain robust constraints on their abundance., [Aims] We investigate the effect of mechanical feedback, that is, the impact of outflows (winds and– or –jets) on the medium, on primordial black hole accretion, and thereby on the associated radiation., [Methods] Using analytical and numerical calculations, we studied for the first time the possibility that outflows can reduce the accretion rate of primordial black holes with masses similar to those detected by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration., [Results] Despite the complexity of the accretion rate evolution, mechanical feedback is useful in to significantly reducing the primordial black hole accretion rate, at least by one order of magnitude, when outflows are aligned with the motion of the compact object. If the outflow is perpendicular to the direction of motion, the effect is less important, but it is still non-negligible., [Conclusions] Outflows from primordial black holes, even rather weak ones, can significantly decrease the accretion rate, effectively weakening abundance constraints on these objects. The gamma-ray emission detected from several microquasars can be produced by relativistic electrons emitting through inverse Compton scattering. In particular, the GeV emission detected from Cygnus X-3, and its orbital phase dependence, strongly suggest that the emitting electrons are accelerated in a relativistic jet, and that the optical companion provides the dominant target. Here, we study the effects related to particle transport in the framework of the relativistic jet scenario. We find that even in the most compact binary systems, with parameters similar to Cygnus X-3, particle transport can have a substantial influence on the GeV lightcurve unless the jet is slow, $\beta < 0.7$. In more extended binary systems, strong impact of particle transport is nearly unavoidable. Thus, even for a very compact system such as Cygnus X-3, particle transport significantly affects the ability of one-zone models to infer the properties of the gamma-ray production site based on the shape on the GeV lightcurve. We conclude that a detailed study of the gamma-ray spectrum can further constrain the structure and other properties of the gamma-ray emitter in Cygnus X-3, although such a study should account for gamma-gamma attenuation, since it may strongly affect the spectrum above $5\rm\,GeV$., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, MNRAS in press

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are bright flashes observed typically at GHz frequencies with millisecond duration, whose origin is likely extragalactic. Their nature remains mysterious, motivating searches for counterparts at other wavelengths. FRB 121102 is so far the only source known to repeatedly emit FRBs and is associated with a host galaxy at redshift $z \simeq 0.193$. We conducted simultaneous observations of FRB 121102 with the Arecibo and MAGIC telescopes during several epochs in 2016--2017. This allowed searches for millisecond-timescale burst emission in very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays as well as the optical band. While a total of five FRBs were detected during these observations, no VHE emission was detected, neither of a persistent nature nor burst-like associated with the FRBs. The average integral flux upper limits above 100 GeV at 95% confidence level are $6.6 \times 10^{-12}~\mathrm{photons\ cm^{-2}\ s^{-1}}$ (corresponding to luminosity $L_{\rm VHE} \lesssim 10^{45}~\mathrm{erg\ s^{-1}}$) over the entire observation period, and $1.2 \times 10^{-7}~ \mathrm{photons\ cm^{-2}\ s^{-1}}$ ($L_{\rm VHE} \lesssim 10^{49}~\mathrm{erg\ s^{-1}}$) over the total duration of the five FRBs. We constrain the optical U-band flux to be below 8.6 mJy at 5-$\sigma$ level for 1-ms intervals around the FRB arrival times. A bright burst with U-band flux $29~\mathrm{mJy}$ and duration $\sim 12$ ms was detected 4.3 s before the arrival of one FRB. However, the probability of spuriously detecting such a signal within the sampled time space is 1.5% (2.2 $\sigma$, post-trial), i.e. consistent with the expected background. High-mass microquasars (HMMQs) are systems from which relativistic jets are launched. At the scales of several times the binary system size, the jets are expected to follow a helical path caused by the interaction with a strong stellar wind and orbital motion. Such a trajectory has its influence on the non-thermal emission of the jets, which also depends strongly on the observing angle due to Doppler boosting effects. We explore how the expected non-thermal emission of HMMQ jets at small scales is affected by the impact of the stellar wind and the orbital motion on the jet propagation. We studied the broadband non-thermal emission, from radio to gamma rays, produced in HMMQ jets up to a distance of several orbital separations, taking into account a realistic jet trajectory, different model parameters, and orbital modulation. The jet trajectory is computed by considering momentum transfer with the stellar wind. Electrons are injected at the position where a recollimation shock in the jets is expected due to the wind impact. Their distribution along the jet path is obtained assuming local acceleration at the recollimation shock, and cooling via adiabatic, synchrotron, and inverse Compton processes. The synchrotron and inverse Compton emission is calculated taking into account synchrotron self-absorption within the jet, free-free absorption with the stellar wind, and absorption by stellar photons via pair production. Asymmetric light curves are obtained owing to the helical trajectory of the jets. The presence of helical shaped jets could be inferred from asymmetries in the light curves, which become noticeable only for large jet Lorentz factors and low magnetic fields. AGN jets have an impact on the galaxy that hosts them, and in turn the galaxy can have an influence on the jet itself. In this work, we give a brief overview of previous studies regarding the interaction of an AGN jet and its environment. We then focus on recent results regarding the possibility of stars introducing stellar-wind and ISM material into the jet at the moment of penetration, and on whether this phenomenon can have a significant impact on the jet, be it dynamically or through emission of non-thermal radiation.

The innermost parts of powerful jets in active galactic nuclei are surrounded by dense, high-velocity clouds from the broad-line region, which may penetrate into the jet and lead to the formation of a strong shock. Such jet-cloud interactions are expected to have measurable effects on the $\gamma$-ray emission from blazars. We characterise the dynamics of a typical cloud-jet interaction scenario, and the evolution of its radiative output in the 0.1-30~GeV energy range, to assess to what extent these interactions can contribute to the $\gamma$-ray emission in blazars. We use semi-analytical descriptions of the jet-cloud dynamics, taking into account the expansion of the cloud inside the jet and its acceleration. Assuming that electrons are accelerated in the interaction and making use of the hydrodynamical information, we then compute the high-energy radiation from the cloud, including the absorption of $\gamma$-rays in the ambient photon field through pair creation. Jet-cloud interactions can lead to significant $\gamma$-ray fluxes in blazars with a broad-line region, in particular when the cloud expansion and acceleration inside the jet are taken into account. This is caused by 1) the increased shocked area in the jet, which leads to an increase in the energy budget for the non-thermal emission; 2) a more efficient inverse Compton cooling with the boosted photon field of the broad-line region; and 3) an increased observer luminosity due to Doppler boosting effects. For typical broad-line region parameters, either (i) jet-cloud interactions contribute significantly to the persistent $\gamma$-ray emission from blazars or (ii) the broad-line region is far from spherical or the fraction of energy deposited in non-thermal electrons is small., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures. Blazars in elliptical hosts have a population of red giants surrounding their jet. These stars can carry large wind-blown bubbles into the jets, leading to gamma-ray emission through bubble-jet interactions. We study the interaction dynamics and the gamma-ray emission produced when the bubbles formed by red giant winds penetrate the jet of a blazar in an elliptical galaxy. First, we characterized the masses and penetration rates of the red giant wind bubbles that enter the jet. Then, the dynamical evolution of these bubbles under the jet impact was analysed analytically and numerically, and the radiation losses of the particles accelerated in the interaction were characterised. Finally, the synchrotron and the inverse Compton contributions above 100 MeV were estimated under different jet magnetic fields, powers, and Lorentz factors. We find that an analytical dynamical model is a reasonable approximation for the red giant wind bubble-jet interaction. The radiation produced by these wind bubbles interacting with a jet can have a duty cycle of up to 1. For realistic magnetic fields, gamma rays could be detectable from sources within the local universe, preferentially from those with high Lorentz factors (of about 10), and this could be a relatively common phenomenon for these sources. For magnetic fields in equipartition with the jet power, and high acceleration rates, synchrotron gamma rays may be detectable even for modest Lorentz factors (of about 3), but with a much lower duty cycle., 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in A&A

Core-collapse supernovae are found in galaxies with ongoing star-formation. In a starburst galaxy hosting an active galactic nucleus with a relativistic jet, supernovae can take place inside the jet. The collision of the supernova ejecta with the jet flow is expected to lead to the formation of an interaction region, in which particles can be accelerated and produce high-energy emission. We study the non-thermal radiation produced by electrons accelerated as a result of a supernova explosion inside the jet of an active galactic nucleus within a star-forming galaxy. We first analyzed the dynamical evolution of the supernova ejecta impacted by the jet. Then, we explored the parameter space using simple prescriptions for the observed gamma-ray lightcurve. Finally, the synchrotron and the inverse Compton spectral energy distributions for two types of sources, a radio galaxy and a powerful blazar, are computed. For a radio galaxy, the interaction between a supernova and a jet of power $\sim 10^{43}-10^{44}$~erg~s$^{-1}$ can produce apparent gamma-ray luminosities of $\sim 10^{42}-10^{43}$~erg~s$^{-1}$, with an event duty cycle of supernova remnant (SNR) interacting with the jet close to one for one galaxy. For a blazar with a powerful jet of $\sim 10^{46}$~erg~s$^{-1}$, the jet-supernova ejecta interaction could produce apparent gamma-ray luminosities of $\sim 10^{43}-10^{44}$~erg~s$^{-1}$, but with a much lower duty cycle. The interaction of supernovae with misaligned jets of moderate power can be relatively frequent, and can result in steady gamma-ray emission potentially detectable for sources in the local universe. For powerful blazars much farther away, the emission would be steady as well, and it might be detectable under very efficient acceleration, but the events would be rather infrequent., 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

[Context]: Cosmic reionization put an end to the dark ages that came after the recombination era. Observations seem to favor the scenario of massive-star photons generated in low-mass galaxies being responsible for the bulk of reionization and, whereas a possible contribution from AGN accretion disks has been widely considered, they are currently thought to have had a minor role in reionization. [Aims]: We aim to study the possibility of AGN having contributed to reionization not only through their accretion disks, but also through ionizing photons coming from the AGN jets interacting with the intergalactic medium. Methods. We adopt an empirically derived AGN luminosity function at z ≃ 6, use X-ray observations to correct it for the presence of obscured sources, and estimate the density of jetted AGN. We then use analytical calculations to derive the fraction of jet energy that goes into ionizing photons. Finally, we compute the contribution of AGN jets to the H II volume filling factor at redshifts z ≃ 15-5. [Results]: We show that the contribution of the AGN jet lobes to the reionization of the Universe at z ∼ 6 might have been as high as ? 10% of that of star-forming galaxies, under the most favorable conditions of jetted and obscuration fraction. The reionization of the Universe ends the dark ages that started after the recombination era. In the case of H, reionization finishes around $z\sim 6$. Faint star-forming galaxies are the best candidate sources of the H-ionizing radiation, although active galactic nuclei may have also contributed. We have explored whether the termination regions of the jets from active galactic nuclei may have contributed significantly to the ionization of H in the late reionization epoch, around $z\sim 6-7$. We assumed that, as it has been proposed, active galactic nuclei at $z\sim 6$ may have presented a high jet fraction, accretion rate, and duty cycle, and that non-thermal electrons contribute significantly to the pressure of jet termination regions. Empirical black-hole mass functions were adopted to characterize the population of active galactic nuclei. From all this, estimates were derived for the isotropic H-ionizing radiation produced in the jet termination regions, at $z\sim 6$, through inverse Compton scattering off CMB photons. We find that the termination regions of the jets of active galactic nuclei may have radiated most of their energy in the form of H-ionizing radiation at $z\sim 6$. For typical black-hole mass functions at that redshift, under the considered conditions (long-lasting, common, and very active galactic nuclei with jets), the contribution of these jets to maintain (and possibly enhance) the ionization of H may have been non-negligible. Microquasars are binary systems consisting of a compact object and a star that present relativistic jets. When the companion is a high-mass star, significant interaction between the stellar wind and the jets is expected. In this work, an overview of the different effects that a strong stellar wind may have in microquasar jets is given. Both analytical estimates and numerical simulations performed in the last years are reviewed. The results of a model for the non-thermal emission of such jets at large scales are also shown and discussed. e-ASTROGAM (enhanced ASTROGAM) is a breakthrough Observatory space mission, with a detector composed by a Silicon tracker, a calorimeter, and an anticoincidence system, dedicated to the study of the non-thermal Universe in the photon energy range from 0.3 MeV to 3 GeV - the lower energy limit can be pushed to energies as low as 150 keV for the tracker, and to 30 keV for calorimetric detection. The mission is based on an advanced space-proven detector technology, with unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, combined with polarimetric capability. Thanks to its performance in the MeV-GeV domain, substantially improving its predecessors, e-ASTROGAM will open a new window on the non-thermal Universe, making pioneering observations of the most powerful Galactic and extragalactic sources, elucidating the nature of their relativistic outflows and their effects on the surroundings. With a line sensitivity in the MeV energy range one to two orders of magnitude better than previous generation instruments, e-ASTROGAM will determine the origin of key isotopes fundamental for the understanding of supernova explosion and the chemical evolution of our Galaxy. The mission will provide unique data of significant interest to a broad astronomical community, complementary to powerful observatories such as LIGO-Virgo-GEO600-KAGRA, SKA, ALMA, E-ELT, TMT, LSST, JWST, Athena, CTA, IceCube, KM3NeT, and LISA.

Relativistic hydrodynamical simulations of the eccentric gamma-ray binary HESS J0632$+$057, show that the energy of a putative pulsar wind should accumulate in the binary surroundings between periastron and apastron, being released by fast advection close to apastron. To assess whether this could lead to a maximum of the non-thermal emission before apastron, we derive simple prescriptions for the non-thermal energy content, the radiation efficiency, and the impact of energy losses on non-thermal particles, in the simulated hydrodynamical flow. These prescriptions are used to estimate the non-thermal emission in radio, X-rays, GeV, and TeV, from the shocked pulsar wind in a binary system simulated using a simplified 3-dimensional scheme for several orbital cycles. Lightcurves at different wavelengths are derived, together with synthetic radio images for different orbital phases. The dominant peak in the computed lightcurves is broad and appears close to, but before, apastron. This peak is followed by a quasi-plateau shape, and a minor peak only in gamma rays right after periastron. The radio maps show ejection of radio blobs before apastron in the periastron-apastron direction. The results show that a scenario with a highly eccentric high-mass binary hosting a young pulsar can explain the general phenomenology of HESS J0632$+$057: despite its simplicity, the adopted approach yields predictions that are robust at a semi-quantitative level and consistent with multiwavelength observations., 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to MNRAS

The stellar wind in high-mass microquasars should interact with the jet. This interaction, coupled with orbital motion, is expected to make the jet follow a helical, nonballistic trajectory. The jet energy dissipated by this interaction, through shocks for example, could lead to nonthermal activity on scales significantly larger than the system size. We calculate the broadband emission from a jet affected by the impact of the stellar wind and orbital motion in a high-mass microquasar. We employ a prescription for the helical trajectory of a jet in a system with a circular orbit. Subsequently, assuming electron acceleration at the onset of the helical jet region, we compute the spatial and energy distribution of these electrons, and their synchrotron and inverse Compton emission including gamma-ray absorption effects. For typical source parameters, significant radio, X- and gamma-ray luminosities are predicted. The scales on which the emission is produced may reduce, but not erase, orbital variability of the inverse Compton emission. The wind and orbital effects on the radio emission morphology could be studied using very long baseline interferometric techniques. We predict significant broadband emission, modulated by orbital motion, from a helical jet in a high-mass microquasar. This emission may be hard to disentangle from radiation of the binary itself, although the light curve features, extended radio emission, and a moderate opacity to very high-energy gamma rays, could help to identify the contribution from an extended (helical) jet region., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. The binary systems that have been detected in gamma rays have proven very useful to study high-energy processes, in particular particle acceleration, emission and radiation reprocessing, and the dynamics of the underlying magnetized flows. Binary systems, either detected or potential gamma-ray emitters, can be grouped in different subclasses depending on the nature of the binary components or the origin of the particle acceleration: the interaction of the winds of either a pulsar and a massive star or two massive stars; accretion onto a compact object and jet formation; and interaction of a relativistic outflow with the external medium. We evaluate the potentialities of an instrument like the Cherenkov telescope array (CTA) to study the non-thermal physics of gamma-ray binaries, which requires the observation of high-energy phenomena at different time and spatial scales. We analyze the capability of CTA, under different configurations, to probe the spectral, temporal and spatial behavior of gamma-ray binaries in the context of the known or expected physics of these sources. CTA will be able to probe with high spectral, temporal and spatial resolution the physical processes behind the gamma-ray emission in binaries, significantly increasing as well the number of known sources. Gamma-ray observations of microquasars at high and very-high energies can provide valuable information of the acceleration processes inside the jets, the jet-environment interaction and the disk-jet coupling. Two high-mass microquasars have been deeply studied to shed light on these aspects: Cygnus X-1 and Cygnus X-3. Both systems display the canonical hard and soft X-ray spectral states of black hole transients, where the radiation is dominated by non-thermal emission from the corona and jets and by thermal emission from the disk, respectively. Here, we report on the detection of Cygnus X-1 above 60 MeV using 7.5 yr of Pass8 Fermi-LAT data, correlated with the hard X-ray state. A hint of orbital flux modulation was also found, as the source is only detected in phases around the compact object superior conjunction. We conclude that the high-energy gamma-ray emission from Cygnus X-1 is most likely associated with jets and its detection allow us to constrain the production site. Moreover, we include in the discussion the final results of a MAGIC long-term campaign on Cygnus X-1 that reaches almost 100 hr of observations at different X-ray states. On the other hand, during summer 2016, Cygnus X-3 underwent a flaring activity period in radio and high-energy gamma rays, similar to the one that led to its detection in the high-energy regime in 2009. MAGIC performed comprehensive follow-up observations for a total of about 70 hr. Context. The stellar winds of the massive stars in high-mass microquasars are thought to be inhomogeneous. The interaction of these inhomogeneities, or clumps, with the jets of these objects may be a major factor in gamma-ray production. Aims. Our goal is to characterize a typical scenario of clump-jet interaction, and calculate the contribution of these interactions to the gamma-ray emission from these systems. Methods. We use axisymmetric, relativistic hydrodynamical simulations to model the emitting flow in a typical clump-jet interaction. Using the simulation results we perform a numerical calculation of the high-energy emission from one of these interactions. The radiative calculations are performed for relativistic electrons locally accelerated at the jet shock, and the synchrotron and inverse Compton radiation spectra are computed for different stages of the shocked clump evolution. We also explore different parameter values, such as viewing angle and magnetic field strength. The results derived from one clump-jet interaction are generalized phenomenologically to multiple interactions under different wind models, estimating the clump-jet interaction rates, and the resulting luminosities in the GeV range. Results. If particles are efficiently accelerated in clump-jet interactions, the apparent gamma-ray luminosity through inverse Compton scattering with the stellar photons can be significant even for rather strong magnetic fields and thus efficient synchrotron cooling. Moreover, despite the standing nature or slow motion of the jet shocks for most of the interaction stage, Doppler boosting in the postshock flow is relevant even for mildly relativistic jets. Conclusions. For clump-to-average wind density contrasts greater than or equal to ten, clump-jet interactions could be bright enough to match the observed GeV luminosity in Cyg X-1 and Cyg X-3 when a jet is present in these sources, with required non-thermal-to-total available power fractions greater than 0.01 and 0.1, respectively., Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas, Instituto Argentino de Radioastronomía

Galaxies hosting an active galactic nucleus may present interactions between relativistic jets, if present, and the surrounding medium, especially if the central regions are rich in stars and gas. In particular, the presence of stars with strong winds entering into the jets can lead to the formation of shocks in which particles can be accelerated up to relativistic energies. Galaxies with ongoing starbursts in the innermost regions will present a significant amount of young OB stars close to the central engine, whereas in older galaxies like M87 the population responsible for most of the jet-star interactions will be formed by red giants. In this work, we develop prescriptions for the spatial and mass distributions of different populations of stars inside AGN jets, and for the mass-loss properties of these stars. Our final objective is to explore the consequences of such interactions for jet dynamics and radiation.

The microquasar Cygnus X-1 displays the two typical soft and hard X-ray states of a black hole transient. During the latter, Cygnus X-1 shows a one-sided relativistic radio-jet. Recent detection of the system in the high energy (HE; E greater than or similar to 60 MeV) gamma-ray range with FermiLAT associates this emission with the outflow. Former MAGIC observations revealed a hint of flaring activity in the very high-energy (VHE; E greater than or similar to 100 GeV) regime during this X-ray state. We analyse ~ to 97 h of Cygnus X-1 data taken with the MAGIC telescopes between July 2007 and October 2014. To shed light on the correlation between hard X-ray and VHE gamma rays as previously suggested, we study each main X-ray state separately. We perform an orbital phase-folded analysis to look for variability in the VHE band. Additionally, to place this variability behaviour in a multiwavelength context, we compare our results with Fermi-LAT, AGILE, Swift-BAT, MAXI, RXTE-ASM, AMI and RATAN-600 data. We do not detect Cygnus X-1 in the VHE regime. We establish upper limits for each X-ray state, assuming a power-law distribution with photon index Γ = 3.2. For steady emission in the hard and soft X-ray states, we set integral upper limits at 95 %per cent confidence level for energies above 200 GeV at 2.6 x 10⁻¹² photons cm⁻² s⁻¹ and 1.0 x 10⁻¹¹ photons cm⁻² s ⁻¹, respectively. We rule out steady VHE gamma-ray emission above this energy range, at the level of theMAGIC sensitivity, originating in the interaction between the relativistic jet and the surrounding medium, while the emission above this flux level produced inside the binary still remains a valid possibility.

The central regions of galaxies are complex environments, rich in evolved and/or massive stars. For galaxies hosting an active galactic nucleus (AGN) with jets, the interaction of the jets with the winds of the stars within can lead to particle acceleration, and to extended high-energy emitting regions. We compute the non-thermal emission produced by the jet flow shocked by stellar winds on the jet scale, far from the jet-star direct interaction region. First, prescriptions for the winds of the relevant stellar populations in different types of galaxies are obtained. The scenarios adopted include galaxies with their central regions dominated by old or young stellar populations, and with jets of different power. Then, we estimate the available energy to accelerate particles in the jet shock, and compute the transport and energy evolution of the accelerated electrons, plus their synchrotron and inverse Compton emission, in the shocked flow along the jet. A significant fraction of the jet energy, $\sim 0.1-10$\%, can potentially be available for the particles accelerated in jet-wind shocks in the studied cases. The non-thermal particles can produce most of the high-energy radiation on jet scales, far from the jet shock region. This high-energy emission will be strongly enhanced in jets aligned with the line of sight due to Doppler boosting effects. The interaction of relativistic jets with stellar winds may contribute significantly to the persistent high-energy emission in some AGNs with jets. Colliding-wind binaries have long been expected to be a class of γ-ray sources; however, up to date only η-Carinae has been firmly confirmed as such, and recently WR 11 was also associated with a Fermi source. In this work we study the possible high-energy emission arising from the binary stellar system HD 93129A, one of the most massive binaries in the Galaxy. This system presents non-thermal radio emission produced in the wind-collision region (WCR). We developed a broadband non-thermal radiative model for the WCR taking into account the evolution of the accelerated particles streaming along the shocked region, their emission by different radiative processes, and the attenuation of this radiation propagating through the local matter and electromagnetic fields. Our model is able to reproduce the radio data and it predicts that the non-thermal emission in hard X-rays and γ-rays from HD 93129A will increase in the near future, as the system approaches periastron. Powerful jets in high-mass microquasars (HMMQs) are likely to be crossed by dense inhomogeneities (clumps) from the stellar winds, which may lead to particle acceleration and thus non-thermal emission in X-rays and γ-rays. We characterize a typical clump-jet interaction scenario and compute the contribution to the high-energy emission of these systems. We use hydrodynamical simulations of a single clump-jet interaction and we use this result to compute its non-thermal (synchrotron and inverse Compton) radiation. We present several radiative calculations for a number of clump states, as the clump is disrupted over time, letting different parameters vary (viewing angle, magnetic field). We obtain significant amounts of non-thermal radiation from jet-clump interactions in high-mass microquasars.

HESS J0632+057 is an eccentric gamma-ray Be binary that produces non-thermal radio, X-rays, GeV, and very high-energy gamma rays. The non-thermal emission of HESS J0632+057 is modulated with the orbital period, with a dominant maximum before apastron passage. The nature of the compact object in HESS J0632+057 is not known, although it has been proposed to be a young pulsar as in PSR B1259-63, the only gamma-ray emitting high-mass binary known to host a non-accreting pulsar. In this Letter, we present hydrodynamical simulations of HESS J0632+057 in the context of a pulsar and a stellar wind interacting in an eccentric binary, and propose a scenario for the non-thermal phenomenology of the source. In this scenario, the non-thermal activity before and around apastron is linked to the accumulation of non-thermal particles in the vicinity of the binary, and the sudden drop of the emission before apastron is produced by the disruption of the two-wind interaction structure, allowing these particles to efficiently escape. In addition to providing a framework to explain the non-thermal phenomenology of the source, this scenario predicts extended, moving X-ray emitting structures similar to those observed in PSR B1259-63., 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted by MNRAS Letters

Dense stellar winds may mass-load the jets of active galactic nuclei, although it is unclear on what time and spatial scales the mixing takes place.Aims. Our aim is to study the first steps of the interaction between jets and stellar winds, and also the scales on which the stellar wind mixes with the jet and mass-loads it.Methods. We present a detailed 2D simulation – including thermal cooling – of a bubble formed by the wind of a star designed to study the initial stages of jet-star interaction. We also study the first interaction of the wind bubble with the jet using a 3D simulation in which the star enters the jet. Stability analysis is carried out for the shocked wind structure to evaluate the distances over which the jet-dragged wind, which forms a tail, can propagate without mixing with the jet flow.Results.The 2D simulations point to quick wind bubble expansion and fragmentation after about one bubble shock crossing time. Three-dimensional simulations and stability analysis point to local mixing in the case of strong perturbations and relatively low density ratios between the jet and the jet dragged-wind, and to a possibly more stable shocked wind structure at the phase of maximum tail mass flux. Analytical estimates also indicate that very early stages of the star jet-penetration time may be also relevant for mass-loading. The combination of these and previous results from the literature suggests highly unstable interaction structures and efficient wind-jet flow mixing on the scale of the jet interaction height.Conclusions. The winds of stars with strong mass loss can efficiently mix with jets from active galactic nuclei. In addition, the initial wind bubble shocked by the jet leads to a transient, large interaction surface. The interaction between jets and stars can produce strong inhomogeneities within the jet. As mixing is expected to be effective on large scales, even individual asymptotic giant branch stars can significantly contribute to the mass-load of the jet and thus affect its dynamics. Until April 2007 the MAGIC telescope used a 300 MSamples/s FADC system to sample the shaped PMT signals produced by the captured Cherenkov photons of air showers. Different algorithms to reconstruct the signal from the read-out samples (extractors) have been implemented and are described and compared. Criteria based on the obtained charge and time resolution/bias are defined and used to judge the different extractors, by applying them to calibration, cosmic and pedestal signals. The paper describes the different methods, used in the MAGIC experiment, to unfold experimental energy distributions of cosmic ray particles (gamma-rays). Questions and problems related to the unfolding are discussed. Various procedures are proposed which can help to make the unfolding robust and reliable. The blazar Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) was observed at energies above 0.10 TeV with the MAGIC telescope from May through July 2005. The high sensitivity of the instrument enabled the determination of the flux and spectrum of the source on a night-by-night basis. Throughout our observational campaign, the flux from Mrk 501 was found to vary by an order of magnitude. Intra-night flux variability with flux-doubling times down to 2 minutes was observed during the two most active nights, namely June 30 and July 9. These are the fastest flux variations ever observed in Mrk 501. The ~20-minute long flare of July 9 showed an indication of a 4 +/- 1 min time delay between the peaks of F(1.2 TeV), which may indicate a progressive acceleration of electrons in the emitting plasma blob. The flux variability was quantified for several energy ranges, and found to increase with the energy of the gamma-ray photons. The spectra hardened significantly with increasing flux, and during the two most active nights, a spectral peak was clearly detected at 0.43 +/- 0.06 TeV and 0.25 +/- 0.07 TeV, respectively for June 30 and July 9. There is no evidence of such spectral feature for the other nights at energies down to 0.10 TeV, thus suggesting that the spectral peak is correlated with the source luminosity. These observed characteristics could be accommodated in a Synchrotron-Self-Compton (SSC) framework in which the increase in gamma-ray flux is produced by a freshly injected (high energy) electron population.

During its first data cycle, between 2005 and the beginning of 2006, the fast repositioning system of the MAGIC telescope allowed the observation of nine different gamma-ray bursts as possible sources of very high energy gamma-rays. These observations were triggered by alerts from Swift, HETE-2, and INTEGRAL; they started as quickly as possible after the alerts and lasted for several minutes, with an energy threshold varying between 80 and 200 GeV, depending on the zenith angle of the burst. No evidence for gamma signals was found, and upper limits for the flux were derived for all events using the standard analysis chain of MAGIC. For the bursts with measured redshifts, the upper limits are compatible with a power-law extrapolation, when the intrinsic fluxes are evaluated taking into account the attenuation due to the scattering in the metagalactic radiation field.

The MAGIC telescope took data of very high energy ?-ray emission from the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) between 2004 November and 2005 April. We present a combined analysis of data samples recorded under different observational conditions, down to ?-ray energies of 100 GeV. The flux was found to vary between 0.5 and 2 crab (integrated above 200 GeV), considered a low state when compared to known data. Although the flux varied day by day, no short-term variability was observed, although there is some indication that not all nights show an equally quiescent state. The results at higher energies were found to be consistent with previous observations. A clear correlation is observed between ?-ray and X-ray fluxes, whereas no significant correlation between ?-ray and optical data is seen. The spectral energy distribution between 100 GeV and 3 TeV shows a clear deviation from a power law, more clearly and at lower flux than previous observations at higher energies. The deviation persists after correcting for the effect of attenuation by the extragalactic background light, and most likely is source-inherent. There is a rather clear indication of an inverse Compton peak around 100 GeV. The spectral energy distribution of Mrk 421 can be fitted by a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model, suggesting once again a leptonic origin of the very high energy ?-ray emission from this blazar. ispartof: Astrophysical Journal vol:663 issue:1 pages:125-138 status: published

The discovery of very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitting X-ray binaries has triggered an intense effort to better understand the particle acceleration, absorption, and emission mechanisms in compact binary systems, which provide variable conditions along eccentric orbits. Despite this, the nature of some of these systems, and of the accelerated particles producing the VHE emission, is unclear. To answer some of these open questions, we conducted a multiwavelength campaign of the VHE gamma-ray emitting X-ray binary LS I +61 303 including the MAGIC telescope, XMM-Newton, and Swift during 60% of an orbit in 2007 September. We detect a simultaneous outburst at X-ray and VHE bands, with the peak at phase 0.62 and a similar shape at both wavelengths. A linear fit to the simultaneous X-ray/VHE pairs obtained during the outburst yields a correlation coefficient of r=0.97, while a linear fit to all simultaneous pairs provides r=0.81. Since a variable absorption of the VHE emission towards the observer is not expected for the data reported here, the correlation found indicates a simultaneity in the emission processes. Assuming that they are dominated by a single particle population, either hadronic or leptonic, the X-ray/VHE flux ratio favors leptonic models. This fact, together with the detected photon indices, suggests that in LS I +61 303 the X-rays are the result of synchrotron radiation of the same electrons that produce VHE emission as a result of inverse Compton scattering of stellar photons., To appear in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. 6 pages, 2 figures

The high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object Markarian~180 (Mrk~180) was observed to have an optical outburst in 2006 March, triggering a Target of Opportunity observation with the MAGIC telescope. The source was observed for 12.4 hr and very high energy $\gamma$-ray emission was detected with a significance of 5.5 $\sigma$. An integral flux above 200 GeV of $(2.3\pm0.7)\times10^{-11} {cm}^{-2} {s}^{-1}$ was measured, corresponding to 11% of the Crab Nebula flux. Aims. We probe the high-energy (>60 MeV) emission from the black hole X-ray binary system, Cygnus X-1, and investigate its origin.Methods. We analyzed 7.5 yr of data by Fermi -LAT with the latest Pass 8 software version.Results. We report the detection of a signal at ~8σ statistical significance that is spatially coincident with Cygnus X-1 and has a luminosity of 5.5 × 1033 erg s-1 , above 60 MeV. The signal is correlated with the hard X-ray flux: the source is observed at high energies only during the hard X-ray spectral state, when the source is known to display persistent, relativistic radio-emitting jets. The energy spectrum, extending up to ~20 GeV without any sign of spectral break, is well fit by a power-law function with a photon index of 2.3 ± 0.2. There is a hint of orbital flux variability, with high-energy emission mostly coming around the superior conjunction.Conclusions. We detected GeV emission from Cygnus X-1 and probed that the emission is most likely associated with the relativistic jets. The evidence of flux orbital variability indicates the anisotropic inverse-Compton on stellar photons as the mechanism at work, thus constraining the emission region to a distance 1011 –1013 cm from the black hole.

We present optical, X-ray, high energy ($\lessapprox 30$ GeV) and very high energy ($\gtrapprox 100$ GeV; VHE) observations of the high-frequency peaked blazar Mrk 421 taken between 2008 May 24 and June 23. A high energy $\gamma$-ray signal was detected by AGILE with \sqrt{TS}=4.5 on June 9--15, with $F(E>100 \mathrm{MeV})= 42^{+14}_{-12}\times 10^{-8}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. This flaring state is brighter than the average flux observed by EGRET by a factor of $\sim$3, but still consistent with the highest EGRET flux. In hard X-rays (20-60 keV) SuperAGILE resolved a 5-day flare (June 9-15) peaking at $\sim$ 55 mCrab. SuperAGILE, RXTE/ASM and Swift/BAT data show a correlated flaring structure between soft and hard X-rays. Hints of the same flaring behavior are also detected in the simultaneous optical data provided by the GASP-WEBT. A Swift/XRT observation near the flaring maximum revealed the highest 2-10 keV flux ever observed from this source, of 2.6 $\times 10^{-9}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (i.e. > 100 mCrab). A peak synchrotron energy of $\sim$3 keV was derived, higher than typical values of $\sim$0.5-1 keV. VHE observations with MAGIC and VERITAS on June 6-8 show the flux peaking in a bright state, well correlated with the X-rays. This extraordinary set of simultaneous data, covering a twelve-decade spectral range, allowed for a deep analysis of the spectral energy distribution as well as of correlated light curves. Gamma-ray binaries are binary systems that show non-thermal broadband emission from radio to gamma rays. If the system comprises a massive star and a young non-accreting pulsar, their winds collide producing non-thermal emission, most likely from the shocked pulsar wind. Thermal X-rays are expected from the shocked stellar wind, with a spectrum akin to the one observed in massive star binaries. The goal of this work is, through the study of the thermal X-ray emission from the shocked stellar wind in pulsar gamma-ray binaries, constrain the pulsar spin-down luminosity and the stellar wind properties. A semi-analytic model is developed to compute the thermal X-ray emission from the shocked stellar wind in pulsar gamma-ray binaries. The model results are compared with XMM-Newton observations of LS 5039, a candidate pulsar gamma-ray binary with a strong stellar wind. Exploring the range of possible values for the stellar mass-loss rate and orbital inclination, we obtain an upper limit on the pulsar spin-down luminosity of 6 × 1036 erg s-1. We conclude that, to explain the non-thermal luminosity of LS 5039 in the pulsar wind scenario, a non-thermal to spin-down luminosity ratio very close to unity may be required.

Several binary systems that contain a massive star have been detected in both the radio band and at very high energies. In the dense stellar photon field of these sources, gamma-ray absorption and pair creation are expected to occur, and the radiation from these pairs may contribute significantly to the observed radio emission. We aim at going deeper in the study of the properties, and in particular the morphology, of the pair radio emission in gamma-ray binaries. We apply a Monte-Carlo code that computes the creation location, the spatial trajectory and the energy evolution of the pairs produced in the binary system and its surroundings. The radio emission produced by these pairs, with its spectral, variability and spatial characteristics, is calculated as it would be seen from a certain direction. A generic case is studied first, and then the specific case of LS 5039 is also considered. We find that, confirming previous results, the secondary radio emission should appear as an extended radio structure of a few milliarcseconds size. This radiation would be relatively hard, with fluxes up to ~ 10 mJy. Modulation is expected depending on the gamma-ray production luminosity, system eccentricity, and wind ionization fraction, and to a lesser extent on the magnetic field structure. In gamma-ray binaries in general, the pairs created due to photon-photon interactions can contribute significantly to the core, and generate an extended structure. The active galactic nucleus PG 1553+113 was observed by the MAGIC telescope in July 2006 during a multiwavelength campaign, in which telescopes in the optical, X-ray, and very high energies participated. Although the MAGIC data were affected by strong atmospheric absorption (calima), they were analyzed after applying a correction. In 8.5 hours, a signal was detected with a significance of 5.0 sigma. The integral flux above 150 GeV was (2.6 +/- 0.9)*10^{-7} ph/s/m^2. By fitting the differential energy spectrum with a power law, a spectral index of -4.1 +/- 0.3 was obtained., 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Non-blazar AGN have been recently established as a class of gamma-ray sources. M87, a nearby representative of this class, show fast TeV variability on timescales of a few days. We suggest a scenario of flare gamma-ray emission in non-blazar AGN based on a red giant interacting with the jet at the base. We solve the hydrodynamical equations that describe the evolution of the envelope of a red giant blown by the impact of the jet. If the red giant is at least slightly tidally disrupted by the supermassive black hole, enough stellar material will be blown by the jet, expanding quickly until a significant part of the jet is shocked. This process can render suitable conditions for energy dissipation and proton acceleration, which could explain the detected day-scale TeV flares from M87 via proton-proton collisions. Since the produced radiation would be unbeamed, such an events should be mostly detected from non-blazar AGN. They may be frequent phenomena, detectable in the GeV-TeV range even up to distances of $\sim 1$ Gpc for the most powerful jets. The counterparts at lower energies are expected to be not too bright.} {M87, and nearby non-blazar AGN in general, can be fast variable sources of gamma-rays through red giant/jet interactions.
