Abstract

The NT1000 deep-water neutrino telescope with an effective volume of ∼2 km3 is currently being developed at Lake Baikal by the BAIKAL collaboration. The telescope will be composed of functionally independent setups—clusters of strings of optical modules based on photomultiplier tubes (with eight strings in each cluster). Since 2011, field tests of the basic elements and systems of the future telescope included in autonomous measuring complexes—prototypes of the NT1000 cluster—have been performed at Lake Baikal. The basic elements and the layout of one of the currently considered versions of the acoustic positioning system for the NT1000 telescope are described, and results of tests of the system prototype included as a component in the experimental cluster of the year 2012 are presented.

Abstract

We review the status of high-energy acoustic neutrino detection activities in Lake Baikal. The Baikal collaboration constructed a hydro-acoustic device which may be regarded as a prototype subunit for a future underwater acoustic neutrino telescope. The device is capable of common operation with the Baikal neutrino telescope NT200+, and is operating at a depth of about 150 m on the “NT200+ instrumentation string”. Our measurements show that the integral noise power in the frequency band 20–40 kHz can reach levels as low as about 1 mPa, i.e. one of the lowest noise levels measured at the currently considered acoustic neutrino sites. At the same time, short acoustic pulses with different amplitudes and shapes have been observed. Low sound absorption in Baikal freshwater and absence of strong acoustic noise sources do motivate further activities towards a large-scale acoustic neutrino detector in Lake Baikal.

Abstract

We review the status of the Lake Baikal Neutrino Experiment. The Neutrino Telescope NT200 has been operating since 1998 and has been upgraded to the 10 Mton detector NT200+ in 2005. We present selected astroparticle physics results from long-term operation of NT200. Also discussed are activities towards acoustic detection of UHE-energy neutrinos, and results of associated science activities. Preparation towards a km3-scale (Gigaton volume) detector in Lake Baikal is currently a central activity. Abstract

We review the status of the Baikal Neutrino Experiment. The Neutrino Telescope NT200 is operating in Lake Baikal since 1998 and has been upgraded to the 10 Mton detector NT200+ in 2005. We present selected results concerning astroparticle physics as well as results of environmental studies. We describe the strategy of creating a Gigaton (km3) scale neutrino detector at Lake Baikal. First steps of activities towards a km3 Baikal neutrino telescope, including the development of acoustic high energy neutrino detection method are discussed.

Abstract

The main physical results obtained with the Baikal neutrino telescope NT200 during the period 1998–2003 are reviewed: the limits for the diffuse flux of high-energy neutrinos, high-energy muons, and magnetic monopoles and the results of search for neutrinos from the center of the Earth due to annihilation of weakly interacting massive particles and from local neutrino sources. In April, 2005, the neutrino telescope NT200 was extended by introduction of three new strings, located at a distance of 100 m from the NT200 center. The new deep-water complex NT200+ has an effective volume for detecting cascades from high-energy neutrinos larger than that of NT200 by a factor of 4. At a cascade energy of 10 PeV, the effective volume of the new complex is 107 m3. Further development of the Baikal neutrino experiment is related to the design and fabrication of a detector with a volume of about 1 km3.

Abstract

The 10 Mton scale Neutrino telescope NT 200 + is operating in Lake Baikal since April, 2005. It's main physics goal is the detection of high energy neutrino cascades in the 10 2 – 10 5 TeV energy range. The NT 200 + sensitivity to astrophysical diffuse neutrinos is four times that of it's predecessor NT200 the telescope that has been operating since 1998, yielding a variety of physics results. A km-scale (Gigaton Volume) Neutrino telescope in Lake Baikal is planned, the R&D phase has started in 2006. We give the basic layout of this Baikal km3-detector, which will be made of building blocks similar to NT 200 + .

Abstract

The hydroacoustic coordinate-measuring system of the NT-200 Baikal neutrino telescope is described. It is a ranging long-base hydroacoustic system constantly operating in an automated or interactive mode and capable of measuring the coordinates of the detecting modules of the NT-200 to within 20 cm. Special attention is given to the justification of the estimate of the coordinate measurement errors. As an illustration, some results of measuring the coordinates of the elements of the NT-200 and the hydrophysical characteristics of lake Baikal are presented.

Abstract

The Baikal neutrino telescope NT200 is in operation since April, 1998. We present physics results obtained with this detector during 1998–2002. Since April 2005, the upgraded 10-Mton scale telescope NT200+ is operating. For a km3-scale neutrino telescope in Lake Baikal, the R&D phase has started in 2006.

Abstract

A project of the NT1000 deep-water neutrino telescope with an effective volume of ∼1 km3 is currently being developed by the BAIKAL collaboration. The telescope will be located in Lake Baikal in close vicinity of the NT200+ detector, which is currently in operation. The telescope will be composed of 12 clusters with 8 similar strings of optical modules in each (each string has two sections of the NT1000 optical modules). The section of the NT1000 optical modules has been developed using higher-efficiency photomultiplier tubes and state-of-the-art electronics. The field tests of the experimental string consisting of two sections with six optical modules in each have been performed. The results of these investigations are used in the project of the NT1000 neutrino telescope and in the hydrological study of Lake Baikal.

Abstract

We review the status of the Lake Baikal Neutrino Experiment. Preparation towards a km3-scale Gigaton Volume Detector (GVD) in Lake Baikal is currently a central activity. As an important milestone, a km3-prototype string comprising 6 optical modules and based on a completely new technology, has been installed and was put into operation together with NT200+ in April, 2008. An upgraded version of the prototype string, which comprises 12 optical modules, was put into operation in April 2009. We also present new results from the long-term operation of NT200, including an improved limit on the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux.

Abstract

We review the status of the Baikal neutrino telescope, which is operating in Lake Baikal since 1998 and has been upgraded to the 10 Mton detector NT 200 + in 2005. We present selected physics results on searches for upward going neutrinos, relativistic magnetic monopoles and for very high-energy neutrinos. We describe the strategy of creating a detector on the Gigaton ( km 3 ) scale at Lake Baikal. First steps of activities towards a km 3 Baikal neutrino telescope are discussed.

Abstract

We review the status of the Baikal Neutrino Telescope, which has recently been upgraded to the 5 Mton detector NT200+. We present results on searches for upward going atmospheric neutrinos and relativistic magnetic monopoles, obtained from 1998-2002 with the predecessor detector NT200. A search for very high energy neutrinos yields an upper limit on the extraterrestrial diffuse neutrino flux for 20 TeV < E < 50 PeV. We describe the strategy of upgrading NT200 to NT200+ and creating a detector on the Gigaton (km3) scale at lake Baikal. R&D activities on that next stage detector have been started.

Abstract

High-frequency noise of Lake Baikal is investigated using a submersible self-contained instrument to determine the noise background for the acoustic detection of superhigh-energy neutrinos. It is found that, under stationary and uniform meteorological conditions, the integral noise power in the frequency band 1–50 kHz is virtually independent of depth and is 10–200 mPa or more, depending on the specific conditions. The noise itself contains multiple short pulses of different amplitudes and shapes.

Abstract

We review the ongoing work of the Baikal Collaboration on acoustic detection of super high energy neutrinos. Some results of the study of high frequency acoustic noise in Lake Baikal are presented. A lot of short impulses with different amplitudes and shapes were detected, which should be considered as a background for acoustic neutrino detection. However, most of the short impulses appear to be due to noise sound waves interference and can be eliminated by a correlation analysis. Only a few detected bipolar impulses probably were produced by quasi local sources.

We present the results of a search for high energy extraterrestrial neutrinos with the Baikal underwater Cherenkov detector NT200, based on data taken in 1998 - 2002. Upper limits on the diffuse fluxes of $\nu_e+\nu_{\mu}+\nu_{\tau}$, predicted by several models of AGN-like neutrino sources, are derived. Abstract

We review the present status of the Baikal Neutrino Project and present results of a search for upward going atmospheric neutrinos, WIMPs and magnetic monopoles obtained with the detector NT-200. Also, the results of a search for very high energy neutrinos are presented. An upper limit on the v e+v μ+v T neutrino diffuse flux of E 2 · F(E) < 1.3 · 10 -6 cm-2 s-1 sr-1 GeV within a neutrino energy range 104 ÷ 107 GeV is obtained, assuming an E -2 behaviour of the neutrino spectrum and flavor ratio v e+v μ+v T = 1: 1: 1- We describe the moderate upgrade of NT-200 planned for the next years and discuss a possible detector on the Gigaton scale.
