1. The problem of mathematical finite element modeling of inhomogeneous deformable solids using scanning

Abstract: Introduction.In the mathematical finite element modeling, an average value of the mechanical characteristics of the deformable solid material is used. In aircraft, machine building, construction engineering, medicine and other fields, polymer composite materials and materials of natural origin are increasingly used. In the latter case, the actual change in the mechanical characteristics differs significantly from the averaged change; therefore, when using the averaged parameters to build and analyze finite element models, the results can be significantly distorted. This paper describes the creation of mathematical methods for studying changes in the mechanical characteristics of a material of inhomogeneous deformable solids. The results obtained in this way are used to construct finite element models and analyze their stress-strain state.Materials and Methods. Naturally occurring materials and composites are considered as inhomogeneous deformable solids. To study the changes in the mechanical characteristics of the material, a method was developed based on the use of two components: the pixel characteristics of raster images scanned by a computer tomograph and the experimental data of field tests of standard samples.Research Results.A complex of mathematical methods has been developed for modeling the interpretation of scanning raster images by a computer tomograph, which allows for the study of any complicated structures of real deformable solids. The results are used in the construction of finite element models of such bodies considering the heterogeneity of the mechanical characteristics of the material. The analysis of the stress-strain state of finite element models of test samples has proved the accuracy and convergence of the numerical solution of the finite element method in modeling the property of heterogeneity of the mechanical characteristics of the material.Discussion and Conclusions. The developed approach can be applied to any physical principles of scanning (X-ray, ultrasound, laser, etc.) and for any types of materials if the data obtained as a result of scanning is developed in the form of a digital (raster) image.

Abstract: The Data Acquisition System for the CDMS II dark matter experiment was designed and built when the experiment moved to its new underground installation at the Soudan Lab. The combination of remote operation and increased data load necessitated a completely new design. Elements of the original LabView system remained as stand-alone diagnostic programs, but the main data processing moved to a VME-based system with custom electronics for signal conditioning, trigger formation and buffering. The data rate was increased 100-fold and the automated cryogenic system was linked to the data acquisition. A modular server framework with associated user interfaces was implemented in Java to allow control and monitoring of the entire experiment remotely.

Abstract: The expected final reach of the Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) search experiment CDMS-II by the end of 2007 is a WIMP-nucleon cross-section sensitivity of 2.1×10−44 cm2. To proceed further in our search, we have proposed the SuperCDMS Phase A project that would deploy 42 1-inch thick Ge detectors, at a site deeper than the location of CDMS II, and reach a desired sensitivity goal of 1.3×10−45 cm2. These cross-sections are of interest and are complementary to Supersymmetry searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and future linear colliders.

Abstract: Mutations in the gene for polycystin 2 (Pkd2) lead to polycystic kidney disease, however the main cause of mortality in humans is cardiac related. We previously showed that 5 month old Pkd2+/- mice have altered calcium-contractile activity in cardiomyocytes, but have preserved cardiac function. Here, we examined 1 and 9 month old Pkd2+/- mice to determine if decreased amounts of functional polycystin 2 leads to impaired cardiac function with aging. We observed changes in calcium handling proteins in 1 month old Pkd2+/- mice, and these changes were exacerbated in 9 month old Pkd2+/- mice. Anatomically, the 9 month old Pkd2+/- mice had thinner left ventricular walls, consistent with dilated cardiomyopathy, and the left ventricular ejection fraction was decreased. Intriguingly, in response to acute isoproterenol stimulation to examine β-adrenergic responses, the 9 month old Pkd2+/- mice exhibited a stronger contractile response, which also coincided with preserved localization of the β2 adrenergic receptor. Importantly, the Pkd2+/- mice did not have any renal impairment. We conclude that the cardiac-related impact of decreased polycystin 2 progresses over time towards cardiac dysfunction and altered adrenergic signaling. These results provide further evidence that polycystin 2 provides a critical function in the heart, independent of renal involvement.

Abstract: The published CDMS analyses have used the shape of the phonon signal rising edge to reject low-ionization-yield surface events which produce acoustic phonons more quickly than bulk events do. To achieve better WIMP sensitivity with future larger exposures, we are using a simplified model of phonon production and propagation to construct event position estimators that help us to find more efficient surface event rejection cuts. We describe this model and the resulting new cuts, and summarize the surface event leakage rates and the sensitivity figures of merit of the five surface event rejection methods developed in the second CDMS II Soudan run data analysis.

Abstract: In the muon ( g - 2 ) experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the spin precession frequency ω a is obtained from a standard χ 2 minimization fit applied to the time distribution of decay electrons. The unusually high accuracy ( ∼ 0.5 ppm ) of the experiment puts stringent requirements on the quality of the fit and the level of understanding of the statistical properties of the fitted parameters. We discuss the properties of the fits and their implications on the derived value for ω a , including estimates of the effect of an imperfect fit function, methods of including additional external information to reduce the error, the effects of splitting the data into many smaller subsets of data, applying different weighting methods to the data using energy information, and various tests of data suitability.

Abstract: In the past year and a half, the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) collaboration has been active at the Soudan mine in installing a system for running ZIP detectors that will be used to search for dark matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles. Presently, there is an operating cryogenic system, working electronics, a functional data acquisition and analysis system, passive shielding, an active muon veto, and 12 ZIP detectors. Six of the 12 ZIP detectors have been tested in situ and are fully operational with acceptable noise profiles. CDMS is in the process of commissioning the experiment and expects to be making a background measurement by the end of summer 2003.

Abstract: The status of the muon g — 2 experiment at the AGS facility of Brookhaven National Laboratory is discussed. Data obtained in 1999 with positive muons has been analyzed and published. The final data set contained 0.95 × 10 9 events and had an accuracy of 1.3 ppm . Approximately four times more data with positive muons and three times more data with negative muons were obtained in 2000 and 2001, respectively. These data were obtained with a more uniform magnetic field and with different storage ring tunes. An accuracy of the order of 0.5 ppm is anticipated.

Abstract: The measurement of the (g−2) value of leptons provides a unique test of theory since it is the only quantity (unlike charge and mass) calculable in the framework of the Standard Model of elementary particles. The muon (g−2) experiment E821 is currently in progress at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Four data taking runs for positive muons and one run for negative muons were successfully accomplished in 1997–2000 and 2001, respectively. Results of the 1997–2000 runs have been published, thus completing our experiment for μ+. Data analysis for the 2001 run for μ− is currently in progress. To provide measurement of $a_\mu = \tfrac{1} {2}(g - 2)_{\mu ^ - }$ at the same level of accuracy as for $a_{\mu ^ + } = \tfrac{1} {2}(g - 2)_{\mu ^ + }$, we need to have one more data taking run.

Abstract: A precise measurement of the anomalous g value, a(mu)(+) = (g - 2)/2, for the positive muon has been made at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The result a(mu)(+) = 11 659 202(14)(6) x 10(-10) (1.3 ppm) is in good agreement with previous measurements and has an error one third that of the combined previous data. The current theoretical value from the standard model is a(mu) (SM)= 11 659 159.6(6.7) x 10(-10) (0.57 ppm) and a(mu)(exp)-a(mu)(SM) = 42(16) x 10(-10) in which a(mu)(exp) is the world average experimental value.

Abstract: By the end of an excellent data taking in 1999, we collected approximate to1 billion decay positrons with energy greater than 2 GeV and 30 mus after injection. The analysis of the 1999 data set were performed in parallel by various teams in the collaboration and each team provides a different approach to the analysis. The projected errors are expected to be of order 1.3 ppm statistical and below 0.5 ppm systematic. The data obtained in the 2000 run contains,approximate to4 times more decay positrons compared to 1999.

Abstract: The muon (g-2) experiment at Brookhaven completed a first run in June and July 1997. The main components of the experiment, which include the superconducting inflector, the superferric storage ring, the electrostatic quadrupoles and the lead-scintillating fiber electron calorimeters, have been commissioned satisfactorily. Our first measurement of the ratio R of the spin precession frequency of the positive muon relative to that of a free proton, R=(3.707219/spl plusmn/0.000048)/spl times/10/sup -3/, is in good agreement with the previous CERN measurements for /spl mu//sup +/ and /spl mu//sup -/, and has approximately the same uncertainty as each of these measurements. In spring 1998 a muon kicker was installed and successfully tested in the storage ring magnet and a significant improvement in the knowledge of the muon g-factor is expected from upcoming runs in August 1998 and January 1999.

Abstract: The muon g-2 experiment at Brookhaven has successfully completed two exploratory runs using pion injection and direct muon injection for checkout and initial data taking. The main components of the experiment, which include the pion beam line, the superconducting storage ring and inflector magnets, the muon kicker and the lead-scintillating fiber calorimeters have been satisfactorily commissioned. First results on the anomalous magnetic moment of the positive muon from pion injection are in good agreement with previous experimental results for a(mu+) and a(mu-) from CERN and of comparable accuracy (13 ppm). Analysis of the 1998 muon injection run is in progress and expected to improve the precision to about 4 ppm. A first production run is scheduled for January 1999 with the goal of reaching the 1 ppm error level.

Abstract: Presently the CDMS-II collaboration's Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) search at the Soudan Underground Laboratory sets the most stringent exclusion limits of any WIMP cold dark matter direct-detection experiment. To extend our reach further, to WIMP-nucleon cross-sections in the range 10 - 46 - 10 - 44 cm 2 , we propose SuperCDMS, which would take advantage of a very deep site. One promising site is the recently approved SNOLab facility in Canada. In this paper we will present our overall program and focus on phase A of SuperCDMS.

Abstract: Results are presented from a reanalysis of the entire five-tower data set acquired with the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS II) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory, with an exposure of 969 kg-days. The analysis window was extended to a recoil energy of 150 keV, and an improved surface-event background-rejection cut was defined to increase the sensitivity of the experiment to the inelastic dark matter (iDM) model. Three dark matter candidates were found between 25 keV and 150 keV. The probability to observe three or more background events in this energy range is 11%. Because of the occurrence of these events the constraints on the iDM parameter space are slightly less stringent than those from our previous analysis, which used an energy window of 10-100 keV., 10 pages, 10 figures, minor changes to match published version, conclusion unchanged

Abstract: We report results from a reanalysis of data from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS II) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. Data taken between October 2006 and September 2008 using eight germanium detectors are reanalyzed with a lowered, 2 keV recoil-energy threshold, to give increased sensitivity to interactions from Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with masses below ~10 GeV/c^2. This analysis provides stronger constraints than previous CDMS II results for WIMP masses below 9 GeV/c^2 and excludes parameter space associated with possible low-mass WIMP signals from the DAMA/LIBRA and CoGeNT experiments., 9 pages, 8 figures. Abstract: News from the Dark Side? Dark matter is thought to represent 85% of all matter in the universe and to have been responsible for the formation of structure in the early universe, but its nature is still a mystery. Ahmed et al. (p. 1619 , published online 11 February; see the Perspective by Lang ) describe the results from the completed Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS II) experiment, which searched for dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP). Two candidate signals were observed, whereas only one background event was expected. The probability of having two or more events from the background would have been 23%. The results of this analysis cannot be interpreted with confidence as evidence for WIMP interactions, but, at the same time, neither event can be ruled out as representing signal.

Abstract: The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search experiment (CDMS) is using Phonon+Ionization detectors to search for Dark Matter in the form of Weakly Interactive Massive Particles (WIMPs). We report on new results from the operation of CDMS five “towers” at Soudan underground laboratory. With new and more massive detectors, SuperCDMS project has been started since March 2009. We report on the current status of SuperCDMS and its perspective.

Abstract: The newly commissioned SuperCDMS Soudan experiment aims to search for WIMP dark matter with a sensitivity to cross sections of 5×10^(−45)cm^2 and larger (90% CL upper limit). This goal is facilitated by a new set of germanium detectors, 2.5 times more massive than the ones used in the CDMS-II experiment, and with a different athermal phonon sensor layout that eliminates radial degeneracy in position reconstruction of high radius events. We present characterization data on these detectors, as well as improved techniques for correcting position-dependent variations in pulse shape across the detector. These improvements provide surface-event discrimination sufficient for a reach of 5×10^(−45)cm^2.

Abstract: The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with cryogenic germanium particle detectors. These detectors discriminate between nuclear‐recoil candidate and electron‐recoil background events by collecting both phonon and ionization energy from interactions in the crystal. Incomplete ionization collection results in the largest background in the CDMS detectors as this causes electron‐recoil background interactions to appear as false candidate events. Two primary causes of incomplete ionization collection are suface and bulk charge trapping. Recent work has been focused on reducing surface trapping through the modification of fabrication methods for future detectors. Analyzing data taken with test devices shows that hydrogen passivation of the amorphous silicon blocking layer does not reduce the effects of surface trapping. Other data shows that the iron‐ion implantation used to lower the critical temperature of the tungsten transition‐edge sensors increases surface trapping, causing a degradation of the ionization collection. Using selective implantation on future detectors may improve ionization collection for events near the phonon side detector surface. Bulk trapping is minimized by neutralizing ionized lattice impurities. Detector investigations at testing facilities and at the experimental site in Soudan, MN have provided methods to optimize the neutralization process and monitor running conditions to maintain maximal ionization collection.

Abstract: In the present study, the effects of rotating a circular cylinder on the vortex shedding are investigated by Particle Image Velocimetry measurement. The experiments were conducted for flow past a circular cylinder of aspect ratio 25 in a recirculating water channel at Reynolds numbers in the range of 200 to 1000. The rotational to translational speed ratio α varies from 0 to 5. The present results show the existence of a critical α value in the range of 2 to 3, above which the vortex shedding is suppressed as reported in the literature. The critical α appears to decrease with increase in flow Reynolds number. Below this critical α, the Karman vortex street is observed. When α increases, both flow separation positions move in the direction of cylinder rotation; and vortex shedding is increasingly deflected towards the rotation direction of the cylinder. Above the critical α, vortex shedding disappears, and a closed streamline is formed around the cylinder. At higher α, only counter clockwise (same direction as cylinder rotation) vorticity was observed around the cylinder. Through this investigation, it is hoped that we can better understand the effects of cylinder rotation on the flow past a slender circular cylinder.

Abstract: Three independent searches for an electric dipole moment (EDM) of the positive and negative muons have been performed, using spin precession data from the muon g-2 storage ring at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Details on the experimental apparatus and the three analyses are presented. Since the individual results on the positive and negative muon, as well as the combined result, d=-0.1(0.9)E-19 e-cm, are all consistent with zero, we set a new muon EDM limit, |d| < 1.9E-19 e-cm (95% C.L.). This represents a factor of 5 improvement over the previous best limit on the muon EDM., 19 pages, 15 figures, 7 tables

Abstract: We report on the analysis of the low-energy electron-recoil spectrum from the CDMS II experiment using data with an exposure of 443.2 kg-days. The analysis provides details on the observed counting rate and possible background sources in the energy range of 2 - 8.5 keV. We find no significant excess in the counting rate above background, and compare this observation to the recent DAMA results. In the framework of a conversion of a dark matter particle into electromagnetic energy, our 90% confidence level upper limit of 0.246 events/kg/day at 3.15 keV is lower than the total rate above background observed by DAMA by 8.9$\sigma$. In absence of any specific particle physics model to provide the scaling in cross section between NaI and Ge, we assume a Z^2 scaling. With this assumption the observed rate in DAMA differs from the upper limit in CDMS by 6.8$\sigma$. Under the conservative assumption that the modulation amplitude is 6% of the total rate we obtain upper limits on the modulation amplitude a factor of ~2 less than observed by DAMA, constraining some possible interpretations of this modulation., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: We report on the first axion search results from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. An energy threshold of 2 keV for electron-recoil events allows a search for possible solar axion conversion into photons or local Galactic axion conversion into electrons in the germanium crystal detectors. The solar axion search sets an upper limit on the Primakov coupling $g_{a\gamma\gamma}$ of 2.4$ \times 10^{-9}$ GeV$^{-1}$ at the 95% confidence level for an axion mass less than 0.1 keV/c$^2$. This limit benefits from the first precise measurement of the absolute crystal plane orientations in this type of experiment. The Galactic axion search analysis sets a world-leading experimental upper limit on the axio-electric coupling $g_{a\bar{e}e}$ of 1.4$ \times 10^{-12}$ at the 90 % confidence level for an axion mass of 2.5 keV/c$^2$. This analysis excludes an interpretation of the DAMA annual modulation result in terms of Galactic axion interactions for axion masses above 1.4 keV/c$^2$., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: SuperCDMS employs 1‐inch thick germanium crystals operated below 50mK in a dilution cryostat. Each detector produces ionization and phonon signals. Ionization signals are amplified by JFETs operating at 150K within an assembly mounted on the 4K cryostat stage. These high impedance signals are carried to the FETs by superconducting “vacuum coaxes” which minimize thermal conductivity, stray capacitance, and microphonics. Transition edge sensors produce low‐impedance phonon signals, amplified by SQUID arrays mounted on a 600mK stage. Detectors are mounted in a six‐sided wiring configuration called a “tower”, which carries signals from 40mK to 4K. A flex circuit 3 meters in length carries amplified signals for each detector from 4K to a vacuum bulkhead. We describe the methods used to support the detectors, wiring and amplifier elements at various thermal stages, minimizing electrical noise and thermal loads.

Abstract: The CDMS collaboration utilizes Ge detectors for their Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) search at the Soudan mine, Minnesota. The final data run of CDMS II is complete and a detector upgrade for SuperCDMS has commenced. A SuperTower of five 1‐inch thick Ge crystals has been installed and undergoing commissioning. Its surface‐event rejection capability should allow SuperCDMS to continue to run background free for the next proposed phases: 15 kg Ge deployment at Soudan, and up to 150 kg Ge deployment at SNOLAB. Recent detector advances to allow a 1 tonne Ge experiment are also discussed.

Abstract: We report results from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search at the Soudan Underground Laboratory (CDMS II) featuring the full complement of 30 detectors. A blind analysis of data taken between October 2006 and July 2007 sets an upper limit on the weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) nucleon spin-independent cross section of 6.6x10;{-44} cm;{2} (4.6x10;{-44} cm;{2} when combined with previous CDMS II data) at the 90% confidence level for a WIMP mass of 60 GeV/c;{2}. This achieves the best sensitivity for dark matter WIMPs with masses above 44 GeV/c;{2}, and significantly restricts the parameter space for some favored supersymmetric models.

Abstract: The spin precession frequency of muons stored in the $(g-2)$ storage ring has been analyzed for evidence of Lorentz and CPT violation. Two Lorentz and CPT violation signatures were searched for: a nonzero $\Delta\omega_{a}$ (=$\omega_{a}^{\mu^{+}}-\omega_{a}^{\mu^{-}}$); and a sidereal variation of $\omega_{a}^{\mu^{\pm}}$. No significant effect is found, and the following limits on the standard-model extension parameters are obtained: $b_{Z} =-(1.0 \pm 1.1)\times 10^{-23}$ GeV; $(m_{\mu}d_{Z0}+H_{XY}) = (1.8 \pm 6.0 \times 10^{-23})$ GeV; and the 95% confidence level limits $\check{b}_{\perp}^{\mu^{+}}< 1.4 \times 10^{-24}$ GeV and $\check{b}_{\perp}^{\mu^{-}} < 2.6 \times 10^{-24}$ GeV., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters, Modified to answer the referees suggestions

Abstract: We present the final report from a series of precision measurements of the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a(mu)=(g-2)/2. The details of the experimental method, apparatus, data taking, and analysis are summarized. Data obtained at Brookhaven National Laboratory, using nearly equal samples of positive and negative muons, were used to deduce a(mu)(Expt)=11659208.0(5.4)(3.3)x10(-10), where the statistical and systematic uncertainties are given, respectively. The combined uncertainty of 0.54 ppm represents a 14-fold improvement compared to previous measurements at CERN. The standard model value for a(mu) includes contributions from virtual QED, weak, and hadronic processes. While the QED processes account for most of the anomaly, the largest theoretical uncertainty, approximate to 0.55 ppm, is associated with first-order hadronic vacuum polarization. Present standard model evaluations, based on e(+)e(-) hadronic cross sections, lie 2.2-2.7 standard deviations below the experimental result.

Abstract: Modest improvements in the level and/or discrimination of backgrounds are needed to keep backgrounds negligible during the three phases of SuperCDMS. By developing production designs that require only modest testing, detector production rates may be improved sufficiently to allow an exposure of 500 ton d within a reasonable time and budget. Overall, the improvement estimates described above are conservative. Previous development efforts have shown that some areas prove easier and provide larger factors while others prove more difficult. The conservative estimates together with the broad approach reduce the risk and give us confidence that we will succeed, providing the surest way to probe to WIMP-nucleon cross sections of 10{sup -46} cm{sup 2}.

Abstract: We report new results from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS II) at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. Two towers, each consisting of six detectors, were operated for 74.5 live days, giving spectrum-weighted exposures of 34 kg-d for germanium and 12 kg-d for silicon targets after cuts, averaged over recoil energies 10-100 keV for a WIMP mass of 60GeV/c{sup 2}. A blind analysis was conducted, incorporating improved techniques for rejecting surface events. No WIMP signal exceeding expected backgrounds was observed. When combined with our previous results from Soudan, the 90% C.L. upper limit on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section is 1.6 x 10{sup -43} cm{sup 2} from Ge, and 3 x 10{sup -42} cm{sup 2} from Si, for a WIMP mass of 60GeV/c{sup 2}. The combined limit from Ge (Si) is a factor of 2.5 (10) lower than our previous results, and constrains predictions of supersymmetric models.

Abstract: The CDMS‐II collaboration’s Cold Dark Matter search presently sets the most competitive exclusion limit in the world for the direct detection of the hypothesized Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) that constitute the cold dark matter of the Universe. Our experiment utilizes Ge (and Si) crystals as the target detectors, each with a mass of 250 g (100 g) and cooled to 30 mK. To eliminate natural radioactive sources as background the experiment is conducted in a well‐shielded environment in the Soudan Mine, Minnesota, and has been operating for the last two years. To aid in the identification of a possible WIMP‐candidate event, the detectors are designed to measure both the ionization and athermal phonon signals produced by each candidate event. The athermal phonon signal is measured using superconducting aluminum films on the crystal surface connected to tungsten transition edge sensors. The latest WIMP‐search results from Soudan will be presented, along with projections for the future.

Abstract: The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS-II) employs low-temperature Ge and Si detectors to seek Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) via their elastic scattering interactions with nuclei. Simultaneous measurements of both ionization and phonon energy provide discrimination against interactions of background particles. For recoil energies above 10 keV, events due to background photons are rejected with >99.99% efficiency. Electromagnetic events very near the detector surface can mimic nuclear recoils because of reduced charge collection, but these surface events are rejected with >96% efficiency by using additional information from the phonon pulse shape. Efficient use of active and passive shielding, combined with the the 2090 m.w.e. overburden at the experimental site in the Soudan mine, makes the background from neutrons negligible for this first exposure. All cuts are determined in a blind manner from in situ calibrations with external radioactive sources without any prior knowledge of the event distribution in the signal region. Resulting efficiencies are known to ~10%. A single event with a recoil of 64 keV passes all of the cuts and is consistent with the expected misidentification rate of surface-electron recoils. Under the assumptions for a standard dark matter halo, these data exclude previously unexplored parameter space for both spin-independent and spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering. The resulting limit on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic-scattering cross-section has a minimum of 4x10^-43 cm^2 at a WIMP mass of 60 GeV/c^2. Abstract: We report the first results from a search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. Four Ge and two Si detectors were operated for 52.6 live days, providing 19.4 kg-d of Ge net exposure after cuts for recoil energies between 10--100 keV. A blind analysis was performed using only calibration data to define the energy threshold and selection criteria for nuclear-recoil candidates. Using the standard dark-matter halo and nuclear-physics WIMP model, these data set the world's lowest exclusion limits on the coherent WIMP-nucleon scalar cross-section for all WIMP masses above 15 GeV, ruling out a significant range of neutralino supersymmetric models. Abstract: The anomalous magnetic moment of the negative muon has been measured to a precision of 0.7 parts per million (ppm) at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. This result is based on data collected in 2001, and is over an order of magnitude more precise than the previous measurement of the negative muon. The result a_mu= 11 659 214(8)(3) \times 10^{-10} (0.7 ppm), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is sytematic, is consistend with previous measurements of the anomaly for the positive and negative muon. Abstract: Using improved Ge and Si detectors, better neutron shielding, and increased counting time, the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) experiment has obtained stricter limits on the cross section of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) elastically scattering from nuclei. Increased discrimination against electromagnetic backgrounds and reduction of neutron flux confirm WIMP-candidate events previously detected by CDMS were consistent with neutrons and give limits on spin-independent WIMP interactions which are >2X lower than previous CDMS results for high WIMP mass, and which exclude new parameter space for WIMPs with mass between 8-20 GeV/c^2., 4 pages, 4 figures

The current theoretical value from the standard model is a_mu(SM)=11 659 159.6(6.7) X 10^{-10} (0.57 ppm) and a_mu(exp)-a_mu(SM)=43(16) X 10^{-10} in which a_mu(exp) is the world average experimental value., 5 pages and 5 figures. Abstract: The muon g-2 experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory is described, including its motivation, goal and present status. The latest result based on 1998 data is aμ+=g−2/2=11 659 191(59)×10−10 (5 ppm), where the error is primarily statistical. This value agrees with the present theoretical value. Data obtained thus far and now being analyzed should have a statistical error of about 0.5 ppm.

Abstract: This article discusses tests of CPT and Lorentz invariance with data from the muon g-2 experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. According to an extension of the Standard Model by Kostelecky et al., CPT/Lorentz violating terms in the Lagrangian induce a shift of the anomaly frequency omega_a of muons in a magnetic field. This shift is predicted to be different for positive and negative muons and to oscillate with the Earth's sidereal frequency.
