1. Study of highly excited states in 16O with 3He+13C reactions at low energies

Abstract

We report some preliminary experimental results on 13C(3He,α)12C reactions at low bombarding energies, in the range 1.4 – 2.2 MeV. The reconstruction of kinematic quantities in the final channel was performed by using a high-performance, low-threshold hodoscope, allowing for the particle identification even for low energy ejectiles. We succeeded in measuring detailed angular distributions, in absolute values, even for the transition leading to the emission of 12C in the Hoyle state, then resulting into 4 α particles in the final channel. The analysis of angular distributions as a function of energy suggests the occurrence of two low-spin resonant states, respectively with Jπ = 1− and 2+, at excitation energies of ≈ 24.1 and 24.5 MeV.

2. A new experiment on 19F(p, α)16O reaction at low energies and the spectroscopy of 20Ne at large excitation energies

Abstract

In these proceedings, we present new data for the p + 19F reaction, obtained for the 19F(p, α0)16Ogs and 19F(p, απ)16O6.05 channels. The experiment was performed at the Singletron accelerator in Catania, with proton beam energies in the 1.1-1.3 and 1.6-1.7 MeV energy regions. This allowed us to provide new data for the απ channel around 1.3 MeV projectile energy and to shed light on the ambiguities existing between previous data sets in the absolute value and in the peak shape of a particular resonance, in the α0 channel, at around 1.6 MeV projectile energy.

3. Understanding heavy-ion fusion cross section data using novel artificial intelligence approaches

Abstract

We modeled an unprecedentedly large dataset of complete fusion cross section data using a novel artificial intelligence approach. Our analysis aims especially to unveil, in a data-driven way, nuclear structure effects on the fusion between heavy ions and to suggest a universal formula capable to describe all previously available data. The study focused on light-to-mediummass nuclei, where incomplete fusion phenomena are more difficult to occur and less likely to contaminate the data. The method used to derive the models exploits a state-of-the-art hybridization of genetic programming and artificial neural networks and is capable to derive an analytical expression that serves to predict integrated cross section values. For the first time, we analyzed a comprehensive set of nuclear variables, including quantities related to the nuclear structure of projectile and target. In this manuscript, we describe the derivation of two computationally simple models that can satisfactorily describe, with a reduced number of variables and only a few parameters, a large variety of lightto- intermediate-mass collision systems in an energy domain ranging approximately from the Coulomb barrier to the oncet of multi-fragmentation phenomena. The underlying methods are particularly innovative and are of potential use for a broad domain of applications in the nuclear field.

4. A new experiment on 19F(p,α)16O reaction at low energies

Abstract

19F(p,α) reactions are important both in nuclear astrophysical field and for the study of the inner structure and the cluster behaviour in light nuclei. The available cross section data on such reaction, although being in reasonable agreement over a wide energy range, still show some discrepancies for both α0 and απ channels. In this work we discuss the preliminary results of a new experiment aimed to solve the disagreement around 1.6 MeV for the 19F(p,α0) absolute cross section. The excellent resolution of the detection device allowed us also to resolve the απ peak in the spectra obtained in the 1.0-1.5 MeV beam energy range, where very few data where previously reported in the literature.

5. Universal Models for Heavy-Ion Fusion Cross Section Above-Barrier

Abstract

The paper discusses a recent re-investigation of a large body of heavy-ion fusion cross section data with the aim of deriving a simple phenomenological model able to describe data from the Coulomb barrier up to the onset of nuclear multifragmentation. To this end, we adopted two complementary approaches: a first universal phenomenological model was derived exploiting a novel artificial intelligence tool for the formal modelling of large datasets. This tool is capable of advanced feature selection and is ideal to drive the discovery process even using traditional methods. A second phenomenological model was derived using a sum-of-difference approach and achieved an unprecedented accuracy in describing above-barrier fusion excitation functions data. Future perspectives and opportunities arising from the present models are also discussed in the text.

6. Analysis of excited states in 13C and their cluster structure

Abstract

An accurate understanding of the spectroscopy of 13C is key to understand clustering phenomena in light nuclear systems. In this nucleus, many theoretical models predict the existence of α-cluster configurations, stabilized by the presence of an extra neutron. Despite of its importance, the spectroscopy of13C is still affected by ambiguities, demanding for new data against which benchmarking the models. We improve the knowledge on the 13C level scheme by means of a comprehensive R-matrix analysis of several experimental data sets. Our new spectroscopic information contributes to solve existing ambiguities in 13C structure and will serve a valid benchmark for theoretical models attempting to describe clustering in neutron rich systems.

Abstract

The study of the emitted particles, comparing pre-equilibrium and thermal components, is a useful tool to examine the nuclear structure of emitters. Possible clustering effects, which may change the expected decay chain probability, could be highlighted on the competition between different reaction mechanisms. The NUCL-EX collaboration (INFN, Italy) has carried out an extensive research campaign on pre-equilibrium emission of light charged particles from hot nuclei. In this framework, the reactions 16O+30Si, 18O+28Si, 19F+27Al at 7 AMeV and 16O+30Si at 8 AMeV have been carried out using the GARFIELD+RCo array at Legnaro National Laboratories. Some anomalies in the α-particle emission channels have been evidenced in the measurement reported above, showing in an exclusive way the observed effects related to the entrance channels. The experimental results are compared to model prediction, for which the same filtering and complete event selection have been applied.

Abstract

The 32S(3He,d)33Cl one-proton transfer reaction is a powerful tool to investigate the spectroscopy of low-lying states in the proton-rich 33Cl nucleus. However, the extraction of firm differential cross-section data at various angles to benchmark and constrain theoretical models is made challenging by the presence of competitive reactions on target contaminants. In this paper we report on arecent measurement using a new generation hodoscope of silicon detectors, capable to detect and identify emitted deuterons down to energies of the order of 2 MeV. The high angular segmentation of our hodoscope combined with a suitable target to control possible contaminants, allowed to unambiguously disentangle the contribution of various states in 33Cl, in particular the 2.352 MeV state lying just few tens of keV above the proton separation energy.

Abstract

The spectroscopy of 13C excited states above the alpha emission threshold has been investigated by studying data on 9Be(α,α)9Be and 9Be(α,n)12C collisions at bombarding energies in the range Eα ≈2-10 MeV. A multichannel R-matrix fit allowed us to better constrain the spectroscopy of 13C states above the α threshold (10.65 MeV). Preliminary results on this analysis will be discussed.

Abstract

The 10B(p,α)7Be reaction is the main responsible for the 10B destruction in stellar interior [1]. In such environments this p-capture process occurs at a Gamow energy of 10 keV and takes places mainly through a resonant state (Ex = 8.701 MeV) of the compound 11C nucleus. Thus a resonance right in the region of the Gamow peak is expected to significantly influence the behavior of the astrophysical S(E)-factor. The 10B(p,α)7Be reaction was studied via the Trojan Horse Method (THM) applied to the 2H(10B,α7Be)n in order to extract the astrophysical S(E)-factor in a wide energy range from 5 keV to 1.5 MeV.

Abstract

The study of nuclear cluster states bound by valence neutrons is a field of recent large interest. In particular, it is important to study the pre-formation of α-clusters in α-conjugate nuclei and the dynamical condensation of clusters during nuclear reactions [1–5]. The NUCL–EX collaboration has recently initiated an experimental campaign of exclusive measurements of fusion–evaporation reactions with light nuclei as interacting partners. In collisions involving light systems, the low expected multiplicity of fragments increases the probability of achieving a quasi-complete reconstruction of the event. In particular the formation and decay modes of an excited 24Mg system have been studied through two different reactions, 12C (95 MeV)+ 12C and 14N (80.7 MeV)+ 10B, which have been used to produce fused systems with nearly the same mass and excitation energy (~60 MeV). In particular, even the de-excitation of the Hoyle state in 12C have been studied, both in peripheral (projectiles de-excitation) and in central collisions (six α-particles channel). Moreover, a research campaign studying pre-equilibrium emission of light charged particles and cluster properties of light and medium-mass nuclei has been carried out. For this purpose, a comparative study of the three nuclear systems 18O+28Si, 16O+30Si and 19F+27Al has been recently studied using the GARFIELD+RCo 4π setup [6]. The experimental data are compared with the predictions of simulated events generated with the statistical models (GEMINI++ and HFl) and through dynamical models like Stochastic Mean Field (SMF) and Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics (AMD) and filtered with a software replica of our apparatus in order to take into account the experimental conditions.

Abstract

The kinematical coincidence method is used to extract angular distribution of elastic scattering and transfer reactions. The detected light particle energy spectra are used to extract the angular distribution with around 1° resolution in the Center of Mass (CM) system. Examples with 10Be beam are presented. In the case of proton scattering, γ-ray coincidences are used to discriminate excited levels population from elastic scattering.

Abstract

We discuss experimental data concerning 40,48Ca+ 40,48Ca reactions at 25 MeV/nucleon; the 4π multi-detector Chimera has been used as detection device. Effects that can be attributed to the neutron to proton ratios (N/Z) degree of freedom have been investigated. From the analysis of experimental data it seems that the neutron richness of the interacting system plays an important role on the evolution of fusion-like sources formed in semi-central collisions. In particular, it is observed that the larger is the neutron content and the larger is the emission of heavy residues. Experimental data have been compared with CoMD-II model calculations; a moderately stiff symmetry energy should be used to reproduce satisfactorily the data. A thermodynamical analysis on fusion-like sources has been also performed. In semi-peripheral collisions, isospin diffusion signals have been found. They have been investigated by analyzing isobaric emission ( 7Li/7Be) of quasi-projectile sources. Experimental data indicate that an incomplete N/Z mixing is reached during the interaction phase.

Abstract

We discuss results concerning the behavior of hot nuclear sources formed in 40 ,48Ca+40 ,48Ca reactions at 25 MeV/nucleon. A correlation between the neutron-to-proton ratio of the total systems and heavy residue production is found. This correlation underlines the strong role played by the neutron-to-proton ratio degree of freedom on the behavior of hot nuclei at intermediate energies. Comparisons of our data with Constrained Molecular Dynamics calculations confirm that a moderately stiff behavior of the symmetry potential must be used to reproduce experimental data. These findings open the way for future investigations with exotic beams at radioactive ion beam facilities. © 2012 American Physical Society.

A multichannel R -matrix fit allowed us to better constrain the spectroscopy of 13 C states above the α threshold (10.65 MeV). Preliminary results on this analysis will be discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The study of nuclear cluster states bound by valence neutrons is a field of recent large interest. In particular, it is important to study the pre-formation of α-clusters in α-conjugate nuclei and the dynamical condensation of clusters during nuclear reactions [1–5]. The NUCL–EX collaboration has recently initiated an experimental campaign of exclusive measurements of fusion–evaporation reactions with light nuclei as interacting partners. In collisions involving light systems, the low expected multiplicity of fragments increases the probability of achieving a quasi-complete reconstruction of the event. In particular the formation and decay modes of an excited 24Mg system have been studied through two different reactions, 12C (95 MeV)+ 12C and 14N (80.7 MeV)+ 10B, which have been used to produce fused systems with nearly the same mass and excitation energy (~60 MeV). In particular, even the de-excitation of the Hoyle state in 12C have been studied, both in peripheral (projectiles de-excitation) and in central collisions (six α-particles channel). Moreover, a research campaign studying pre-equilibrium emission of light charged particles and cluster properties of light and medium-mass nuclei has been carried out. For this purpose, a comparative study of the three nuclear systems 18O+28Si, 16O+30Si and 19F+27Al has been recently studied using the GARFIELD+RCo 4π setup [6]. The experimental data are compared with the predictions of simulated events generated with the statistical models (GEMINI++ and HFl) and through dynamical models like Stochastic Mean Field (SMF) and Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics (AMD) and filtered with a software replica of our apparatus in order to take into account the experimental conditions.

Abstract

Background: In heavy ion collision at the Fermi energies Isospin equilibration processes occur- ring when nuclei with different charge/mass asymmetries interacts have been investigated to get information on the nucleon-nucleon Iso-vectorial effective interaction. Purpose: In this paper, for the system 48Ca +27 Al at 40 MeV/nucleon, we investigate on this process by means of an observable tightly linked to isospin equilibration processes and sensitive in exclusive way to the dynamical stage of the collision. From the comparison with dynamical model calculations we want also to obtain information on the Iso-vectorial effective microscopic interaction. Method: The average time derivative of the total dipole associated to the relative motion of all emitted charged particles and fragments has been determined from the measured charges and velocities by using the 4? multi-detector CHIMERA. The average has been determined for semi- peripheral collisions and for different charges Zb of the biggest produced fragment. Experimental evidences collected for the systems 27Al+48Ca and 27Al+40Ca at 40 MeV/nucleon used to support this novel method of investigation are also discussed., Submitted for publication on Phys. Abstract

The gamma decay of the first excited 4.44 MeV 2+level of 12C, populated by inelastic scattering of proton and 16O beams at various energies was studied in order to test γ-ray detection efficiency and the quality of angular distribution information given by the CsI(Tl) detectors of the 4π CHIMERA array. The γ-decay was measured in coincidence with ejectile scattered particles in an approximately 4π geometry allowing to extract the angular distribution in the reference frame of recoiling 12C target. The typical sin2 (2θ) behavior of angular distribution was observed in the case of 16O beam. Besides that, for the proton beam, in order to explain the observed distribution, the addition of an incoherent flat contribution was required. This latter is the effect of proton spin flip events allowing the population of M=±1 magnetic substates, that is not possible in reactions induced by 16O beam. A comparison with previously collected data, obtained measuring only in and out of plane proton-γ-ray coincidences, confirms the good quality of the angular distribution information given by the apparatus. Possible applications with radioactive beams are outlined. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

In a recent experiment performed in Naples by using the TTT-3 tandem accelerator, the 19F(p, α0) reaction has been investigated at low bombarding energies, Ep = 0.6–1 MeV. Excitation functions and angular distributions have been obtained by using several solid state detectors preceded by thin aluminium absorbers. By analysing angular distributions in terms of Legendre and cosine polynomials, a few spectroscopic ambiguities concerning the excited states of the compound nucleus, 20Ne, in the excitation energy region E* = 13.4–13.8 MeV, have been solved. Moreover, this reaction plays an important role for the description of the fluorine nucleosynthesis. For this reason, the astrophysical S-factor has also been extracted and the results have been compared with the literature data.

Abstract

We study nuclear stopping in central collisions for heavy-ion induced reactions in the Fermi energy domain, between $15$ and $100$ A\,\textrm{MeV}. Using the large dataset of exclusive measurements provided by the $4\pi$ array \emph{INDRA}, we determine the relative degree of stopping as a function of system mass and bombarding energy. We show that the stopping can be directly related to the transport properties in the nuclear medium. By looking specifically at free nucleons (here protons), we present for the first time a comprehensive body of experimental results concerning the mean free path, the nucleon-nucleon cross-section and in-medium effects in nuclear matter. It is shown that the mean free path exhibits a maximum at $\lambda_{NN}=9.5 \pm 2$ \textrm{fm}, around $E_{inc}=35-40$ A\,\textrm{MeV} incident energy and decreases toward an asymptotic value $\lambda_{NN}= 4.5 \pm 1$ \textrm{fm} at $E_{inc} = 100$ A\,\textrm{MeV}. After accounting for Pauli blocking of elastic nucleon-nucleon collisions, it is shown that the effective in-medium \emph{NN} cross section is further reduced compared to the free value in this energy range. Therefore, in-medium effects cannot be neglected in the Fermi energy range. Abstract

Semi-peripheral collisions of ^{64}Ni + ^{124}Sn in direct and inverse kinematics, at 35 A MeV incident energy, are studied to characterize the dynamical origin and align-ments properties of fragments emission at midrapidity. This emission is partly due to the fragmentation of a transient neck joining the projectile and target in the early stages of the reaction. Recently we exploited observable from neck fragmentation to constraint the density dependence of the symmetry energy. In this contribution we focus on the density evolution of the mid-rapidity source. An experimental survey is suggested to check if data are consistent with the formation of neck fragments in a dilute density region in contact with the projectile-like and target-like spectators at normal saturation density.

In past experiments, mass asymmetric projectile-target combinations 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni were investigated at ELab(112,124Sn)=35 A.MeV beam energy by using the 4π multi-detector CHIMERA. From a quantitative comparison of cross sections associated to Statistical and Dynamical Fission of the Projectile-Like Fragments, it resulted that Dynamical Fission process is about two times more probable in the neutron rich 124Sn+64Ni system than in the 112Sn +58 Ni neutron poor one. In contrast, no sizable difference was found for Statistical Fission mechanism. The observed difference in the strength of the Dynamical effects could arise from the difference in entrance channel Isospin (N/Z) content. In order to disentangle Isospin effects from effects due to the different masses of the two systems, a new experiment 124Xe+64Zn at 35 A.MeV beam energy has been recently carried out.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL; International audience; Decay modes of excited compound systems 118Ba and 134Ba, produced respectively in the 78Kr+40Ca and 86Kr+48Ca collisions at 10 A*MeV, are investigated. In particular, the competition between the various disintegration path of medium mass compound nuclei, formed by fusion processes, the production of the so referred Intermediate Mass Fragments (IMF), and the isospin dependence of the decay process are studied. Data were taken at the INFN-Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) by using the CHIMERA array. Data analysis is in progress; a first indication on the average-energy angular distributions suggests pre-equilibrium effects affecting the data and the presence of isotopical effects.

Abstract

We will discuss new experimental data concerning the elastic resonant scattering of α- particles on 9Be nuclei at bombarding energies from 3.5 MeV up to 9.9 MeV. Several excitation functions have been obtained at different polar angles, mainly in the backward hemisphere in the centre of mass frame. Excitation functions show various anomalies that can be linked to the presence of various excited states in the 13C compound nucleus. In the literature, some of these states have been proposed to belong to rotational bands built on deformed a-cluster excited state. Unfortunately, up to date the spin-parity assignment of many of these states is doubtful. The set of excitation functions we obtained from the present experiment can contribute to improve spectroscopy of highling excited states of 13C.

Abstract

The investigation of the 19F(p, α0) reaction at low bombarding energies allows the study of the spectroscopy of the 20Ne compound nucleus in an energy region where the existence of quartet excitations has been suggested in the literature. Moreover, this reaction plays a major role in the fourth branch of the CNO cycle since it is relevant for the correct description of the hydrogen burning of fluorine in stars. For these reasons, we decided to investigate the 19F(p, α0) reaction in the Ep ≃ 0.6-1 MeV energy range. The analysis of angular distributions and excitation functions allows one to improve the 20Ne spectroscopy in an excitation energy region where some ambiguities concerning Jπ assignments exist in the literature. In particular, the present data suggest a Jπ = 0 + assignment to the Ex = 13.642 MeV resonance. For this state, both partial and reduced widths for the α0 channel have been deduced. The trend of the astrophysical factor has been obtained from the integrated cross section. A comparison of the present results with data reported in the literature is also discussed.

Abstract

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich Heavy-Ion at intermediate energies has been recently proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear equation of state (EOS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration in May 2011. © Owned by the authors, 2012.

Abstract

At the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania (Italy), light radioactive ion beams have been produced through the In Flight Fragmentation method, using 18O and 13C at 55 MeV/A as primary beams impinging on a 9Be production target. Elastic scattering angular distributions of 16C+p and 16C+d at 50 MeV/A, 10Be+p at 56 MeV/A and 13B+d at 52 MeV/A systems were measured by using the CHIMERA (Charge Heavy Ion Mass and Energy Resolving Array) multidetector and kinematical coincidence technique. Abstract

Isospin dependence of dynamical and thermodynamical properties observed in reactions 40Ca+ 40,48Ca and 40Ca + 46Ti at 25 MeV/nucleon has been studied. We used the CHIMERA multi-detector array. Strong isospin effects are seen in the isotopic distributions of light nuclei and in the competition between different reaction mechanisms in semi-central collisions. We will show also preliminary results obtained in nuclear collision 48Ca + 48Ca at 25MeV/nucleon, having very high N/Z value in the entrance channel (N/Z = 1. 4). The enhancement of evaporation residue production confirms the strong role played by the N/Z degree of freedom in nuclear dynamics.

Abstract

We discuss results on the emission of light clusters in nuclear reactions 40 Ca + 40,48 Ca ,46 Ti at 25 MeV/nucleon. They were detected and identified in mass and charge by means of the CHIMERA 4π array. Inclusive emission at forward angles shows that isotopic yields of Li and Be nuclei are related to the N/Z values of entrance channels. Moreover, structure effects and even-odd staggering in charge distributions of intermediate mass fragments emitted at forward angles will be shown. In agreement with previous experimental findings, odd-even effects are clearly visible in N ≈ Z systems, while are less pronounced in the neutron rich collision 40 Ca +48 Ca . These experimental findings are compared to preliminary data obtained in 40 Ca +48 Ca . collision at 25 MeV/nucleon.

Abstract

We discuss the preliminary results obtained by studying the α+9Be elastic scattering at bombarding energies from 3.5 to 10 MeV. Experimental spectra show the presence of elastic and inelastic scattering phenomena. Elastic scattering excitation functions have been obtained at various angles; their shape is in good agreement with data at backward angles reported in the literature.

Abstract

Effects related to the neutron to proton ratio (N/Z) degree of freedom in 40, 48Ca+40, 48Ca reactions at 25 MeV/nucleon have been investigated. Isotopic effect and even-odd staggering characterize the emission of light fragments at forward angles. The study of isobaric ratio 7Li/7Be for quasi-projectile source in semi-peripheral event of reactions allows moreover to investigate isospin diffusion effects in heavy ion collisions. © Owned by the authors, 2012.
