Abstract: The low-lying structure of 15C has been investigated via the neutron-removal d(16C, t) reaction. The experiment was performed at GANIL using a secondary 16C beam produced by fragmentation in the LISE spectrometer at 17.2 MeV/nucleon with an intensity of 5 × 104 pps and 100% purity. The angle and energy of the light ejectile were detected by three MUST2 telescopes. The missing mass technique was used to reconstruct the excitation energy of 15C. In this spectrum, two bound states were observed (gs and the first excited state) and two unbound resonant states above the neutron separation threshold (S n = 1.218 MeV). From the differential cross sections, information on the angular momentum of the transferred nucleon and spectroscopic factors were deduced. The excitation energies and the deduced spectroscopic factors of the negative parity states placed above the neutron separation energy are an important measurement of the 2p-1h configurations in 15C. Our results show good agreement with shell-model calculations with the YSOX interaction and show a sensitivity to the N=8 shell gap.

Abstract: The Large Hadron-Electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy-recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operations. This report represents an update to the LHeC's conceptual design report (CDR), published in 2012. It comprises new results on the parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, and electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics by extending the accessible kinematic range of lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to its enhanced luminosity and large energy and the cleanliness of the final hadronic states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, this report contains a detailed updated design for the energy-recovery electron linac (ERL), including a new lattice, magnet and superconducting radio-frequency technology, and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described, and the lower-energy, high-current, three-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented, which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution, and calibration goals that arise from the Higgs and parton-density-function physics programmes. Abstract: Among reactions with strong impact on classical novae model predictions, 30P(p,γ)31S is one of the few remained that are worthy to be measured accurately, because of their rate uncertainty, as like as 18F(p,α)15O and 25Al(pγ)26Si. To reduce the nuclear uncertainties associated to this reaction, we performed an experiment at ALTO facility of Orsay using the 31P(3He,t)31S reaction to populate 31S excited states of astrophysical interest and detect in coincidence the protons coming from the decay of the populated states in order to extract the proton branching ratios. After a presentation of the astrophysical context of this work, the current situation of the 30P(p,γ)31S reaction rate will be discussed. Then the experiment set-up of this work and the analysis of the single events will be presented.

Abstract: Numerous domains, in fundamental research as well as in applications, require the study of reactions induced by neutrons with energies from few MeV up to few tens of MeV. Reliable measurements also are necessary to improve the evaluated databases used by nuclear transport codes. This energy range covers a large number of topics like transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors. A new facility called Neutrons For Science (NFS) is being built for this purpose on the GANIL site at Caen (France). NFS is composed of a pulsed neutron beam for time-of-flight facility as well as irradiation stations for cross-section measurements. Neutrons will be produced by the interaction of deuteron and proton beams, delivered by the SPIRAL-2 linear accelerator, with thick or thin converters made of beryllium or lithium. Continuous and quasi-mono-energetic spectra will be available at NFS up to 40 MeV. In this fast energy region, the neutron flux is expected to be up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than at other existing time-of-flight facilities. In addition, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will allow performing cross-section measurements by the activation technique. After a description of the facility and its characteristics, the experiments to be performed in the short and medium term will be presented.

Abstract: The n_TOF neutron time-of-flight facility at CERN is used for high quality nuclear data measurements from thermal energy up to hundreds of MeV. In line with the CERN open data policy, the n_TOF Collaboration takes actions to preserve its unique data, facilitate access to them in standardised format, and allow their re-use by a wide community in the fields of nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics and various nuclear technologies. The present contribution briefly describes the n_TOF outcomes, as well as the status of dissemination and preservation of n_TOF final data in the international EXFOR library.

Abstract: The 235U neutron-induced cross section is widely used as reference cross section for measuring other fission cross sections, but in the resonance region it is not considered as an IAEA standard because of the scarce experimental data covering the full region. In this work, we deal with a new analysis of the experimental data obtained with a detection setup based on parallel plate ionization chambers (PPACs) at the CERN n_TOF facility in the range from 1 eV to 10 keV. The relative cross section has been normalised to the IAEA value in the region between 7.8 and 11 eV, which is claimed as well-known. Comparison with the ENDF/B-VII evaluation and the IAEA reference file from 100 eV to 10 keV are provided.

Abstract: The 238U fission cross section is an international standard beyond 2 MeV where the fission plateau starts. However, due to its importance in fission reactors, this cross-section should be very accurately known also in the threshold region below 2 MeV. The 238U fission cross section has been measured relative to the 235U fission cross section at CERN – n_TOF with different detection systems. These datasets have been collected and suitably combined to increase the counting statistics in the threshold region from about 300 keV up to 3 MeV. The results are compared with other experimental data, evaluated libraries, and the IAEA standards.

Abstract: The CERN Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n_TOF) facility is well suited to measure low cross sections as those of neutron-induced fission in subactinides. The cross section ratios of natPb and 209Bi relative to 235U and 238U were measured using PPAC detectors and a fragment coincidence method that allows us to identify the fission events. The present experiment provides first results for neutron-induced fission up to 1 GeV. Good agreement is found with previous experimental data below 200 MeV. The comparison with proton-induced fission indicates that the limiting regime where neutron-induced and proton-induced fission reach equal cross sections is close to 1 GeV.

Abstract: We present a review of the fission cross section measurements made by the CENBG collaboration over the last years using the surrogate reaction method. For example the neutron-induced fission cross sections of 233Pa(T1/2 = 27 d), 242Cm(T1/2 d) and 243Cm(T1/2 y) have been obtained by our group with this technique. The advantages and the difficulties of the surrogate method are discussed. Special attention is paid to the comparison between cross sections measured with the surrogate method and those obtained directly with neutrons at low energies. This comparison provides information on possible differences between the spin-parity distributions achieved in the two methods.

Abstract: The n-TOF neutron time-of-flight facility at CERN is used for high quality nuclear data measurements from thermal energy up to hundreds of MeV. In line with the CERN open data policy, the n-TOF Collaboration takes actions to preserve its unique data, facilitate access to them in standardised format, and allow their re-use by a wide community in the fields of nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics and various nuclear technologies. The present contribution briefly describes the n-TOF outcomes, as well as the status of dissemination and preservation of n-TOF final data in the international EXFOR library. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2017.

Abstract: A few years ago, the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF was built at CERN to address some of the urgent needs of high-accuracy nuclear data for Accelerator Driven Systems and other advanced nuclear energy systems, as well as for nuclear astrophysics and fundamental nuclear physics. Thanks to the characteristics of the neutron beam, and to state-of-the-art detection and acquisition systems, high quality neutron cross-section data have been obtained for a variety of isotopes, many of which radioactive. Following an important upgrade of the spallation target and of the experimental area, a new measurement campaign has started last year. After a brief review of the most important results obtained so far at n_TOF, the new features of the facility are presented, together with the first results on the commissioning of the neutron beam. The plans for future measurements, in particular related to nuclear technology are finally discussed.

Abstract: Neutron-induced ssion cross-sections of minor actinides have been measured using the n TOF white neutron source at CERN, Geneva, as part of a large experimental program aiming at collecting new data relevant for nuclear astrophysics and for the design of advanced reactor systems. The measurements at n TOF take advantage of the innovative features of the n TOF facility, namely the wide energy range, high instantaneous neutron ux and good energy resolution. Final results on the ssion cross-section of 233U, 245Cm and 243Am from thermal to 20 MeV are here reported, together with preliminary results for 241Am. The measurement have been performed with a dedicated Fast Ionization Chamber (FIC), a ssion fragment detector with a very high e ciency, relative to the very well known cross-section of 235U, measured simultaneously with the same detector.

Abstract: International audience; The future SPIRAL-2 facility is mainly composed of a high-power superconducting driver LINAC, delivering a high-intensity deuteron, proton and heavy ions beams. The first two beams are particularly well suited to the construction of a neutron beam and irradiation facility called Neutrons for Science (NFS). Thick C and Be target-converters with incident deuteron beam will produce an intense white neutron spectrum, while thin 7Li target and incident proton beam allows generating quasi-monoenergetic neutrons. The 1–40MeV neutron energy range will be covered and characterized by very intense fluxes available. The primary ion beam characteristics (energy, time resolution, intensity, etc.) are adequate to create a neutron time-of-flight facility. Irradiation stations for neutron, proton and deuteron induced reactions could also be built in order to perform cross-sections measurements by activation techniques. In this paper we will discuss the potential of this new installation to investigate numerous topics, both in fundamental and applied physics. In particular, cross section measurements could be performed for different purposes like nuclear data evaluation, fission and fusion technology, Accelerator Driven Systems, nuclear medicine, astrophysics, etc.

Abstract: The n_TOF facility at CERN has been designed for the measurement of neutron capture, fission and (n; n) crosssections with high accuracy. This requires a flexible and—due to the high instantaneous neutron flux—almost dead time free data acquisition system. A scalable and versatile data solution has been designed based on 8-bit flash-ADCs with sampling rates up to 2GHz and 8 Mbyte memory buffer. The software is written in C and Cþþand is running on PCs equipped with RedHat Linux.

Abstract: The U-238 fission cross section is an international standard beyond 2 MeV where the fission plateau starts. However, due to its importance in fission reactors, this cross-section should be very accurately known also in the threshold region below 2 MeV. The U-238 fission cross section has been measured relative to the U-235 fission cross section at CERN - n_TOF with different detection systems. These datasets have been collected and suitably combined to increase the counting statistics in the threshold region from about 300 keV up to 3 MeV. The results are compared with other experimental data, evaluated libraries, and the IAEA standards.

Abstract: In this document, we present the nal result obtained at the n TOF experiment for the neutron- induced ssion cross section of the 237Np, from the ssion threshold up to 1 GeV. The method applied to get this result is brie y discussed. n TOF data are compared to the last experimental measurements using other TOF facilities or the surrogate method, reported experiments performed with monoenergetic sources and the FISCAL systematic, including a discussion about the existing discrepancies.

Abstract: The CERN Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n-TOF) facility is well suited to measure small neutron-induced fission cross sections, as those of subactinides. The cross section ratios of {sup nat}Pb and {sup 209}Bi relative to {sup 235}U and {sup 238}U were measured using PPAC detectors. The fragment coincidence method allows to unambiguously identify the fission events. The present experiment provides the first results for neutron-induced fission up to 1 GeV for {sup nat}Pb and {sup 209}Bi. A good agreement with previous experimental data below 200 MeV is shown. The comparison with proton-induced fission indicates that the limiting regime where neutron-induced and proton-induced fission reach equal cross section is close to 1 GeV.

Abstract: The $^{235}$U neutron-induced cross section is widely used as reference cross section for measuring other fission cross sections, but in the resonance region it is not considered as an IAEA standard because of the scarce experimental data covering the full region. In this work, we deal with a new analysis of the experimental data obtained with a detection setup based on parallel plate ionization chambers (PPACs) at the CERN n_TOF facility in the range from 1 eV to 10 keV. The relative cross section has been normalised to the IAEA value in the region between 7.8 and 11 eV, which is claimed as well-known. Comparison with the ENDF/B-VII evaluation and the IAEA reference file from 100 eV to 10 keV are provided.

Abstract: The neutron-induced fission cross section of 245Cm was measured at n-TOF in a wide energy range and with high resolution. The energy dependence, measured in a single measurement from 30 meV to 1 MeV neutron energy, has been determined with 5% accuracy relative to the 235U(n,f) cross section. In order to reduce the uncertainty on the absolute value, the data have been normalized at thermal energy to recent measurements performed at ILL and BR1. In the energy range of overlap, the results are in fair agreement with some previous measurements and confirm, on average, the evaluated cross section in the ENDF/B-VII.0 database, although sizable differences are observed for some important resonances below 20 eV. A similar behavior is observed relative to JENDL/AC-2008, a reactor-oriented database for actinides. The new results contribute to the overall improvement of the databases needed for the design of advanced reactor systems and may lead to refinements of fission models for the actinides. Abstract: The neutron capture cross section of 237Np was measured between 0.7 and 500 eV at the CERN n-TOF facility using the 4π BaF2 Total Absorption Calorimeter. The experimental capture yield was extracted minimizing all the systematic uncertainties and was analyzed together with the most reliable transmission data available using the sammy code. The result is a complete set of individual as well as average resonance parameters [D0=0.56(2) eV, Γγ=40.9(18) meV, 104S0=0.98(6), R ′=9.8(6) fm]. The capture cross section obtained in this work is in overall agreement with the evaluations and the data of Weston and Todd, thus showing sizable differences with respect to previous data from Scherbakov and large discrepancies with data Kobayashi. The results indicate that a new evaluation combining the present capture data with reliable transmission data would allow reaching an accuracy better than 4%, in line with the uncertainty requirements of the nuclear data community for the design and operation of current and future nuclear devices. Abstract: The decay from excited levels in medium and heavy nuclei can be described in a statistical approach by means of Photon Strength Functions and Level Density distributions. The study of electromagnetic cascades following neutron capture based on the use of high e ciency detectors has been shown to be well suited for probing the properties of the Photon Strength Function of heavy (high level density) and/or radioactive (high background) nuclei. In this work we have investigated for the rst time the validity of the recommended PSF of actinides, in particular 235U, 238Np and 241Pu. Our study includes the search for resonance structures in the PSF below Sn and draws conclusions regarding their existence and their characteristics in terms of energy, width and electromagnetic nature.

Abstract: The neutron-induced fission cross-section of 241Am has been measured relative to the standard fission cross-section of 235U between 0.5 and 20MeV. The experiment was performed at the CERN n_TOF facility. Fission fragments were detected by a fast ionization chamber by discriminating against the α- particles from the high radioactivity of the samples. The high instantaneous neutron flux and the low background of the n_TOF facility enabled us to obtain uncertainties of ≈ 5%. With the present results it was possible to resolve discrepancies between previous data sets and to confirm current evaluations, thus providing important information for design studies of future reactors with improved fuel burn-up. © The Author(s) 2013.

Abstract: See paper for full list of authors.; The ratio of the neutron-induced fission cross-sections of 243Am and 235U was measured in the energy range from 0.5 to 20 MeV with uncertainties of ≈ 4%. The experiment was performed at the CERN n_TOF facility using a fast ionization chamber. With the good counting statistics that could be achieved thanks to the high instantaneous flux and the low backgrounds, the present results are useful for resolving discrepancies in previous data sets and are important for future reactors with improved fuel burn-up.
