Alonso et al., We summarise the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Finally, we present a first draft of a possible road-map for achieving these goals, that we propose for discussion by the interested cold atom, Earth Observation, fundamental physics and other prospective scientific user communities, together with the European Space Agency (ESA) and national space and research funding agencies., We thank the CERN Quantum Technology Initiative for their support of the workshop that laid the basis for this paper.

Bayesian estimation is a powerful theoretical paradigm for the operation of the approach to parameter estimation. However, the Bayesian method for statistical inference generally suffers from demanding calibration requirements that have so far restricted its use to systems that can be explicitly modeled. In this theoretical study, we formulate parameter estimation as a classification task and use artificial neural networks to efficiently perform Bayesian estimation. We show that the network’s posterior distribution is centered at the true (unknown) value of the parameter within an uncertainty given by the inverse Fisher information, representing the ultimate sensitivity limit for the given apparatus. When only a limited number of calibration measurements are available, our machine-learning-based procedure outperforms standard calibration methods. Our machine-learning-based procedure is model independent, and is thus well suited to “black-box sensors”, which lack simple explicit fitting models. Thus, our work paves the way for Bayesian quantum sensors that can take advantage of complex nonclassical quantum states and/or adaptive protocols. These capabilities can significantly enhance the sensitivity of future devices.

International audience; Excited-state quantum phase transitions extend the notion of quantum phase transitions beyond the ground state. They are characterized by closing energy gaps amid the spectrum. Identifying order parameters for excited-state quantum phase transitions poses, however, a major challenge. We introduce a topological order parameter that distinguishes excited-state phases in a large class of mean-field models and can be accessed by interferometry in current experiments with spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. Our work opens a way for the experimental characterization of excited-state quantum phases in atomic many-body systems.

We explore the possibility to overcome the standard quantum limit (SQL) in a free-fall atom interferometer using a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in either of the two relevant cases of Bragg or Raman scattering light pulses. The generation of entanglement in the BEC is dramatically enhanced by amplifying the atom-atom interactions via the rapid action of an external trap focusing the matter-waves to significantly increase the atomic densities during a preparation stage -- a technique we refer to as delta-kick squeezing (DKS). The action of a second DKS operation at the end of the interferometry sequence allows to implement a non-linear readout scheme making the sub-SQL sensitivity highly robust against imperfect atom counting detection. We predict more than 30 dB of sensitivity gain beyond the SQL for the variance, assuming realistic parameters and $10^6$ atoms., 4 pages, 4 figues

We study the particle-entanglement dynamics witnessed by the quantum Fisher information (QFI) of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate governed by the kicked rotor Hamiltonian. The dynamics is investigated with a beyond mean-field approach. We link the time scales of the validity of this approximation in, both, classical regular and chaotic regions, with the maximum Lyapunov exponents of the classical system. This establishes an effective connection between the classical chaos and the QFI. We finally study the critical point of a quantum phase transition using the beyond mean-field approximation by considering a two-mode bosonic Josephson junction with attractive interparticle interaction.

Quantum phase estimation (QPE) is one of the most important subroutines in quantum computing. In general applications, current QPE algorithms either suffer an exponential time overload or require a set of - notoriously quite fragile - GHZ states. These limitations have prevented so far the demonstration of QPE beyond proof-of-principles. Here we propose a new QPE algorithm that scales linearly with time and is implemented with a cascade of Gaussian spin states (GSS). GSS are renownedly resilient and have been created experimentally in a variety of platforms, from hundreds of ions up to millions of cold/ultracold neutral atoms. We show that our protocol achieves a QPE sensitivity overcoming previous bounds, including those obtained with GHZ states, and is robustly resistant to several sources of noise and decoherence. We propose a hybrid quantum-classical atomic clock protocol where the interrogation of an ensemble of uncorrelated atoms in a spin-coherent state is used to feedback one (or more) spin-squeezed atomic ensembles toward their optimal phase sensitivity point. This protocol overcomes the stability of a single Ramsey clock and it reaches a Heisenberg-limited stability while avoiding non-destructive measurements. Time in quantum mechanics is peculiar: it is an observable that cannot be associated to an Hermitian operator. As a consequence it is impossible to explain dynamics in an isolated system without invoking an external classical clock, a fact that becomes particularly problematic in the context of quantum gravity. An unconventional solution was pioneered by Page and Wootters (PaW) in 1983. PaW showed that dynamics can be an emergent property of the entanglement between two subsystems of a static Universe. In this work we first investigate the possibility to introduce in this framework a Hermitian time operator complement of a clock Hamiltonian having an equally-spaced energy spectrum. An Hermitian operator complement of such Hamiltonian was introduced by Pegg in 1998, who named it "Age". We show here that Age, when introduced in the PaW context, can be interpreted as a proper Hermitian time operator conjugate to a "good" clock Hamiltonian. We therefore show that, still following Pegg's formalism, it is possible to introduce in the PaW framework bounded clock Hamiltonians with an unequally-spaced energy spectrum with rational energy ratios. In this case time is described by a POVM and we demonstrate that Pegg's POVM states provide a consistent dynamical evolution of the system even if they are not orthogonal, and therefore partially un-distinguishables., 13 pages

Quantum coherence is a crucial resource for quantum information processing. By employing the language of coherence orders largely applied in NMR systems, quantum coherence has been currently addressed in terms of multiple quantum coherences (MQCs). Here we investigate the $\alpha$-MQCs, a novel class of multiple quantum coherences which is based on $\alpha$-relative purity, an information-theoretic quantifier analogous to quantum fidelity and closely related to R\'{e}nyi relative entropy of order $\alpha$. Our framework enables linking $\alpha$-MQCs to Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew information (WYDSI), an asymmetry monotone finding applications in quantum thermodynamics and quantum metrology. Furthermore, we derive a family of bounds on $\alpha$-MQCs, particularly showing that $\alpha$-MQC define a lower bound to quantum Fisher information (QFI). We illustrate these ideas for quantum systems described by single-qubit states, two-qubit Bell-diagonal states, and a wide class of multiparticle mixed states. Finally, we investigate the time evolution of the $\alpha$-MQC spectrum and the overall signal of relative purity, by simulating the time reversal dynamics of a many-body all-to-all Ising Hamiltonian and comment on applications to physical platforms such as NMR systems, trapped ions, and ultracold atoms., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures. We study the nonlinear interaction between two species of Bose gases having a large mass imbalance. It is presented the situation, when at low temperature, one of gas component, with smallest mass, is Bose–Einstein condensed, while the other gas is not. We show that the new interaction Hamiltonian with temperature dependent potential part takes into account all binary exchange energy between the atoms of the smallest mass component through the virtual states of non-condensate components. The modification of the traditional phase transition representation of the number of atoms in the condensate as a function of the temperature is described by an anomaly in the low temperature branch of this dependence. This anomaly have the tendency of the increasing of the numbers of atoms in condensate with increasing of temperature for a small value of the relative parameter T ∕ T c , where T c is the critical temperature of the phase transition.

We propose to use ultracold-fermionic atoms in optical lattices to quantum-simulate electronic transport in quantum-cascade-laser structures. The parallelism between the two systems is discussed.

A closed-trajectory evolution of a quantum state generally imprints a phase that contains both dynamical and geometrical contributions. While dynamical phases depend on the reference system, geometric phase factors are uniquely defined by the properties of the outlined trajectory. Here, we generate and measure geometric phases in a Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{87}$Rb using a combination of dynamical quantum Zeno effect and measurement-free evolution. We show that the dynamical quantum Zeno effect can inhibit the formation of a geometric phase without altering the dynamical phase. This can be used to extract the geometric Aharonov-Anandan phase from any closed-trajectory evolution without requiring knowledge or control of the Hamiltonian., 4+3 pages, 4+3 figures

We show that matter-wave interference fringes formed by two overlapping atomic clouds can yield information about the non-local Bell correlations. To this end, we consider a simple atomic interferometer, where the clouds are released from the double-well potential and the relative phase is estimated from the density fit to this interference pattern. The Bell correlations can be deduced from the sensitivity of the phase obtained in this way. We examine the relation between these two quantities for a wide range of ground states of the double-well, scanning through the attractive and the repulsive interactions. The presented analysis includes the effects of finite temperature, when excited states are thermally occupied. We also consider the impact of the spatial resolution of the single-atom detectors and the fluctuations of the energy mismatch between the wells. These results establish a link between the fundamental (non-locality) and application-oriented (quantum metrology) aspects of entanglement., 5 pages, 2 figures

Sensitivity bounds for a generic interferometric phase estimation problem are the shot noise and the Heisenberg limits. The shot noise is the highest sensitivity that can be reached with separable states, while the Heisenberg limit is the ultimate bound in sensitivity which can be saturated with entangled states. The scaling of these bounds with the number of particles $N$ entering the interferometer depends on the specific Hamiltonian governing the same interferometer. In typical cases, the Hamiltonian is linear, and the shot-noise and Heisenberg limits scale with ${N}^{\ensuremath{-}1/2}$ and with ${N}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, respectively. With interferometers described by generic, nonlinear Hamiltonian, the scalings with the number of particles can be rather different. Here we study the shot-noise and Heisenberg limits of Ising-like Hamiltonians in the presence of longitudinal and transverse fields, both in the nearest-neighbor and in the fully connected spin interaction cases. We provide the explicit forms of the states saturating the shot-noise and Heisenberg limits. These results can be relevant not only for precision measurement purposes but also to characterize quantum phase transitions and, more generally, the witnessing of multipartite entanglement.

We periodically modulate the lattice trapping potential of a $^{87}$Sr optical clock to Floquet engineer the clock transition. In the context of atomic gases in lattices, Floquet engineering has been used to shape the dispersion and topology of Bloch quasi-energy bands. Differently from these previous works manipulating the external (spatial) quasi-energies, we target the internal atomic degrees of freedom. We shape Floquet spin quasi-energies and measure their resonance profiles with Rabi spectroscopy. We provide the spectroscopic sensitivity of each band by measuring the Fisher information and show that this is not depleted by the Floquet dynamical modulation. The demonstration that the internal degrees of freedom can be selectively engineered by manipulating the external degrees of freedom inaugurates a novel device with potential applications in metrology, sensing and quantum simulations., 6 pages, 4 figures, including supplementary material, comments are welcome and more information at http://cqutp.org/users/xfzhang/

Quantum mechanics predicts the existence of correlations between composite systems that, although puzzling to our physical intuition, enable technologies not accessible in a classical world. Notwithstanding, there is still no efficient general method to theoretically quantify and experimentally detect entanglement of many qubits. Here we propose to detect entanglement by measuring the statistical response of a quantum system to an arbitrary nonlocal parametric evolution. We witness entanglement without relying on the tomographic reconstruction of the quantum state, or the realization of witness operators. The protocol requires two collective settings for any number of parties and is robust against noise and decoherence occurring after the implementation of the parametric transformation. To illustrate its user friendliness we demonstrate multipartite entanglement in different experiments with ions and photons by analyzing published data on fidelity visibilities and variances of collective observables.

The quantum noise of the vacuum limits the achievable sensitivity of quantum sensors. In non-classical measurement schemes the noise can be reduced to overcome this limitation. However, schemes based on squeezed or Schrödinger cat states require alignment of the relative phase between the measured interaction and the non-classical quantum state. Here we present two measurement schemes on a trapped ion prepared in a motional Fock state for displacement and frequency metrology that are insensitive to this phase. The achieved statistical uncertainty is below the standard quantum limit set by quantum vacuum fluctuations, enabling applications in spectroscopy and mass measurements., Quantum metrology allows surpassing the standard quantum limit, but methods relying on squeezing require to know the orientation of the squeezed quadrature with respect to the signal. Here, instead, the authors propose a phase-insensitive Fock-state-based protocol, and demonstrate it using trapped ions.

Understanding the distribution of quantum entanglement over many parties is a fundamental challenge of quantum physics and is of practical relevance for several applications in the field of quantum information. The Fisher information is widely used in quantum metrology since it is related to the quantum gain in metrology measurements. Here, we use methods from quantum metrology to microscopically characterize the entanglement structure of multimode continuous-variable states in all possible multi-partitions and in all reduced distributions. From experimentally measured covariance matrices of Gaussian states with 2, 3, and 4 photonic modes with controllable losses, we extract the metrological sensitivity as well as an upper separability bound for each partition. An entanglement witness is constructed by comparing the two quantities. Our analysis demonstrates the usefulness of these methods for continuous-variable systems and provides a detailed geometric understanding of the robustness of cluster-state entanglement under photon losses.

We use an exact quantum phase model to study the dynamical generation of particle-entanglement in a bosonic Josephson junction composed by two coupled and interacting Bose-Einstein condensates. Using analytical arguments, we show that linear coupling can accelerate the creation of entanglement with respect to the well known one-axis twisting model where coupling is absent. Furthermore, with a numerical analysis of optimal control schemes, we identify the optimal parameters for the fast generation of metrologically useful entanglement on short time scales: the optimal evolution is generated for a specific ratio between the coupling and the interaction strength., new version, 12 pages, 10 figures

We present sensitivity limits for a multimode interferometer as matrix bounds for the covariance matrix. Quantum strategies to improve the precision beyond classical limits may consist in entanglement among the modes or among the particles.

We identify precision limits for the simultaneous estimation of multiple parameters in multimode interferometers. Quantum strategies to enhance the multiparameter sensitivity are based on entanglement among particles, modes or combining both. The maximum attainable sensitivity of particle-separable states defines the multiparameter shot-noise limit, which can be surpassed without mode entanglement. Further enhancements up to the multiparameter Heisenberg limit are possible by adding mode entanglement. Entanglement-enhanced atom interferometry has the potential of surpassing the standard quantum limit and eventually reaching the ultimate Heisenberg bound. The experimental progress is, however, hindered by various technical noise sources, including the noise in the detection of the output quantum state. The influence of detection noise can be largely overcome by exploiting echo schemes, where the entanglement-generating interaction is repeated after the interferometer sequence. Here, we propose an echo protocol that uses two-axis counter-twisting as the main nonlinear interaction. We demonstrate that the scheme is robust to detection noise and its performance is superior compared to the already demonstrated one-axis twisting echo scheme. In particular, the sensitivity maintains the Heisenberg scaling in the limit of a large particle number. Finally, we show that the protocol can be implemented with spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. We theoretically analyse a multi-modes atomic interferometer consisting of a sequence of Kapitza-Dirac pulses (KD) applied to cold atoms trapped in a harmonic trap. The pulses spatially split the atomic wave-functions while the harmonic trap coherently recombines all modes by acting as a coherent spatial mirror. The phase shifts accumulated among different KD pulses are estimated by measuring the number of atoms in each output mode or by fitting the density profile. The sensitivity is rigorously calculated by the Fisher information and the Cramer-Rao lower bound. We predict, with typical experimental parameters, a temperature independent sensitivity which, in the case of the measurement of the gravitational constant g can significantly exceed the sensitivity of current atomic interferometers.

The well known metrological linear squeezing parameters (such as quadrature or spin squeezing) efficiently quantify the sensitivity of Gaussian states. Yet, these parameters are insufficient to characterize the much wider class of highly sensitive non-Gaussian states. Here, we introduce a class of metrological nonlinear squeezing parameters obtained by analytical optimization of measurement observables among a given set of accessible (possibly nonlinear) operators. This allows for the metrological characterization of non-Gaussian quantum states of discrete and continuous variables. Our results lead to optimized and experimentally-feasible recipes for high-precision moment-based estimation of a phase parameter and can be used to systematically construct multipartite entanglement and non-classicality witnesses for complex quantum states., Comment: 6+2 pages, 1 figure

The controlled generation and identification of quantum correlations, usually encoded in either qubits or continuous degrees of freedom, builds the foundation of quantum information science. Recently, more sophisticated approaches, involving a combination of two distinct degrees of freedom have been proposed to improve on the traditional strategies. Hyperentanglement describes simultaneous entanglement in more than one distinct degree of freedom, whereas hybrid entanglement refers to entanglement shared between a discrete and a continuous degree of freedom. In this work we propose a scheme that allows to combine the two approaches, and to extend them to the strongest form of quantum correlations. Specifically, we show how two identical, initially separated particles can be manipulated to produce Bell nonlocality among their spins, among their momenta, as well as across their spins and momenta. We witness multipartite entanglement in the Kitaev chain -- a benchmark model of one dimensional topological insulator -- also with variable-range pairing, using the quantum Fisher information. Phases having a finite winding number, both for short- and long-range pairing, are characterized by a power-law diverging finite-size scaling of multipartite entanglement. Moreover the occurring quantum phase transitions are sharply marked by the divergence of the derivative of the quantum Fisher information, even in the absence of a closing energy gap., 5 pages, 3 figures + supplemental materials

We introduce a multi-mode squeezing coefficient to characterize entanglement in $N$-partite continuous-variable systems. The coefficient relates to the squeezing of collective observables in the $2N$-dimensional phase space and can be readily extracted from the covariance matrix. Simple extensions further permit to reveal entanglement within specific partitions of a multipartite system. Applications with nonlinear observables allow for the detection of non-Gaussian entanglement., 11 pages, 2 figures

Symmetry-breaking quantum phase transitions play a key role in several condensed matter, cosmology and nuclear physics theoretical models(1-3). Its observation in real systems is often hampered by finite temperatures and limited control of the system parameters. In this work we report, for the first time, the experimental observation of the full quantum phase diagram across a transition where the spatial parity symmetry is broken. Our system consists of an ultracold gas with tunable attractive interactions trapped in a spatially symmetric double-well potential. At a critical value of the interaction strength, we observe a continuous quantum phase transition where the gas spontaneously localizes in one well or the other, thus breaking the underlying symmetry of the system. Furthermore, we show the robustness of the asymmetric state against controlled energy mismatch between the two wells. This is the result of hysteresis associated with an additional discontinuous quantum phase transition that we fully characterize. Our results pave the way to the study of quantum critical phenomena at finite temperature(4), the investigation of macroscopic quantum tunnelling of the order parameter in the hysteretic regime and the production of strongly quantum entangled states at critical points(5).

By using a renormalization group analysis, we study the effect of interparticle interactions on the critical temperature at which the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition occurs for Bose-Einstein condensates loaded at finite temperature in a 2D optical lattice. We find that the critical temperature decreases as the interaction energy decreases; when U/J=36/\pi one has a vanishing critical temperature, signaling the possibility of a quantum phase transition of BKT type.

The dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a periodic potential is governed by a discrete nonlinear equation. The interplay/competition between discreteness (introduced by the lattice) and nonlinearity (due to the interatomic interaction) manifests itself on nontrivial dynamical regimes which disappear in the continuum (translationally invariant) limit, and have been recently observed experimentally. We review some recent efforts on this highly interdisciplinary field, with the goal of stimulating interexchanges among the communities of condensed matter, quantum optics, and nonlinear physics.

We report on the observation of the Josephson effect between two strongly interacting fermionic superfluids coupled through a thin tunneling barrier. We prove that the relative population and phase are canonically conjugate dynamical variables, coherently oscillating throughout the entire crossover from molecular Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluids. We measure the plasma frequency and we extract the Josephson coupling energy, both exhibiting a non-monotonic behavior with a maximum near the crossover regime. We also observe the transition from coherent to dissipative dynamics, which we directly ascribe to the propagation of vortices through the superfluid bulk. Our results highlight the robust nature of resonant superfluids, opening the door to the study of the dynamics of superfluid Fermi systems in the presence of strong correlations and fluctuations., Comment: 12 pages, 11 Figures

We analyze families of measures for the quantum statistical speed which include as special cases the quantum Fisher information, the trace speed, i.e., the quantum statistical speed obtained from the trace distance, and more general quantifiers obtained from the family of Schatten norms. These measures quantify the statistical speed under generic quantum evolutions and are obtained by maximizing classical measures over all possible quantum measurements. We discuss general properties, optimal measurements, and upper bounds on the speed of separable states. We further provide a physical interpretation for the trace speed by linking it to an analog of the quantum Cram\'{e}r-Rao bound for median-unbiased quantum phase estimation., Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure

Since the pioneering work of Ramsey, atom interferometers are employed for precision metrology, in particular to measure time and to realize the second. In a classical interferometer, an ensemble of atoms is prepared in one of the two input states, whereas the second one is left empty. In this case, the vacuum noise restricts the precision of the interferometer to the standard quantum limit (SQL). Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel clock configuration that surpasses the SQL by squeezing the vacuum in the empty input state. We create a squeezed vacuum state containing an average of 0.75 atoms to improve the clock sensitivity of 10,000 atoms by 2.05 dB. The SQL poses a significant limitation for today's microwave fountain clocks, which serve as the main time reference. Recent experiments have demonstrated the generation of entanglement by quasi-adiabatically driving through quantum phase transitions of a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a tunable quadratic Zeeman shift. We analyze, in terms of the Fisher information, the interferometric value of the entanglement accessible by this approach. In addition to the Twin-Fock phase studied experimentally, we unveil a second regime, in the broken axisymmetry phase, which provides Heisenberg scaling of the quantum Fisher information and can be reached on shorter time scales. We identify optimal unitary transformations and an experimentally feasible optimal measurement prescription that maximize the interferometric sensitivity. We further ascertain that the Fisher information is robust with respect to non-adiabaticity and measurement noise. Finally, we show that the quasi-adiabatic entanglement preparation schemes admit higher sensitivities than dynamical methods based on fast quenches., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We formulate a general family of entanglement criteria for multipartite systems. Fisher information criteria compare the sensitivity to unitary rotations with the variances of suitable local observables. Generalized squeezing-type criteria provide lower bounds that are less stringent but only require measurements of second moments. The enhancement due to local access to the individual subsystems is studied in detail for the case of $N$ spin-$1/2$ particles. Quantum technologies exploit entanglement to revolutionize computing, measurements, and communications. This has stimulated the research in different areas of physics to engineer and manipulate fragile many-particle entangled states. Progress has been particularly rapid for atoms. Thanks to the large and tunable nonlinearities and the well developed techniques for trapping, controlling and counting, many groundbreaking experiments have demonstrated the generation of entangled states of trapped ions, cold and ultracold gases of neutral atoms. Moreover, atoms can couple strongly to external forces and light fields, which makes them ideal for ultra-precise sensing and time keeping. All these factors call for generating non-classical atomic states designed for phase estimation in atomic clocks and atom interferometers, exploiting many-body entanglement to increase the sensitivity of precision measurements. We provide a method to construct entanglement criteria for arbitrary multipartite systems of discrete or continuous variables and hybrid combinations of both. While any set of local operators generates a sufficient condition for entanglement of arbitrary quantum states, a suitable set leads to a necessary and sufficient criterion for pure states. The criteria are readily implementable with existing technology and reveal entanglement that remains undetected by the respective state-of-the-art methods for discrete and continuous variables., 6 pages, 2 figures

We study analytically the superfluid flow of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring geometry in presence of a rotating barrier. We show that a phase transition breaking a parity symmetry among two topological phases occurs at a critical value of the height of the barrier. Furthermore, a discontinuous (accompanied by hysteresis) phase transition is observed in the ordered phase when changing the angular velocity of the barrier. At the critical point where the hysteresis area vanishes, chemical potential of the ground state develops a cusp (a discontinuity in the first derivative). Along this path, the jump between the two corresponding states having a different winding number shows strict analogies with a topological phase transition. We finally study the current-phase relation of the system and compare some of our calculations with published experimental results., 5 pages, 5 figures

We propose a versatile Loschmidt echo protocol to detect and quantify multiparticle entanglement. It allows us to extract the quantum Fisher information for arbitrary pure states, and finds direct application in quantum metrology. In particular, the protocol applies to states that are generally difficult to characterize, as non-Gaussian states, and states that are not symmetric under particle exchange. We focus on atomic systems, including trapped ions, polar molecules, and Rydberg atoms, where entanglement is generated dynamically via long-range interaction, and show that the protocol is stable against experimental detection errors.

We sudy the creation of nonlocal states with ultracold atoms trapped in an optical lattice. We show that these states violate Bell inequality by measuring one- and two-body correlations. Our scheme only requires beam splitting operations and global phase shifts, and can be realized within the current technology, employing single-site addressing. Since the pioneering work of Ramsey, atom interferometers are employed for precision metrology, in particular to measure time and to realize the second. In a classical interferometer, an ensemble of atoms is prepared in one of the two input states, whereas the second one is left empty. In this case, the vacuum noise restricts the precision of the interferometer to the standard quantum limit (SQL). Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel clock configuration that surpasses the SQL by squeezing the vacuum in the empty input state. We create a squeezed vacuum state containing an average of 0.75 atoms to improve the clock sensitivity of 10,000 atoms by 2.05 dB. The SQL poses a significant limitation for today's microwave fountain clocks, which serve as the main time reference. We evaluate the major technical limitations and challenges for devising a next generation of fountain clocks based on atomic squeezed vacuum. Very recently, the validity of the concept of negative temperature has been challenged by several authors since they consider Boltzmann's entropy (that allows negative temperatures) inconsistent from a mathematical and statistical point of view, whereas they consider Gibbs' entropy (that does not admit negative temperatures) the correct definition for microcanonical entropy. In the present paper we prove that for systems with equivalence of the statistical ensembles Boltzmann entropy is the correct microcanonical entropy. Analytical results on two systems supporting negative temperatures, confirm the scenario we propose. In addition, we corroborate our proof by numeric simulations on an explicit lattice system showing that negative temperature equilibrium states are accessible and obey standard statistical mechanics prevision., Comment: To appear in Annals of Physics

The unavoidable interaction between a quantum system and the external noisy environment can be mimicked by a sequence of stochastic measurements whose outcomes are neglected. Here we investigate how this stochasticity is reflected in the survival probability to find the system in a given Hilbert subspace at the end of the dynamical evolution. In particular, we analytically study the distinguishability of two different stochastic measurement sequences in terms of a new Fisher information measure depending on the variation of a function, instead of a finite set of parameters. We find a novel characterization of Zeno phenomena as the physical result of the random observation of the quantum system, linked to the sensitivity of the survival probability with respect to an arbitrary small perturbation of the measurement stochasticity. Finally, the implications on the Cram\'er-Rao bound are discussed, together with a numerical example. These results are expected to provide promising applications in quantum metrology towards future, more robust, noise-based quantum sensing devices., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Quantum mechanics predicts that our physical reality is influenced by events that can potentially happen but factually do not occur. Interaction-free measurements (IFMs) exploit this counterintuitive influence to detect the presence of an object without requiring any interaction with it. Here we propose and realize an IFM concept based on an unstable many-particle system. In our experiments, we employ an ultracold gas in an unstable spin configuration, which can undergo a rapid decay. The object—realized by a laser beam—prevents this decay because of the indirect quantum Zeno effect and thus, its presence can be detected without interacting with a single atom. Contrary to existing proposals, our IFM does not require single-particle sources and is only weakly affected by losses and decoherence. We demonstrate confidence levels of 90%, well beyond previous optical experiments., The inherent strangeness of quantum mechanics means it is possible to detect objects using single-quantum particles even if they do not interact directly. Peise et al. realize such an ‘interaction-free measurement' by exploiting the quantum Zeno effect in a BEC, obviating the need for single-particle sources.
