Search

Quasar absorption systems encode a wealth of information about the abundances, ionization structure, and physical conditions in intergalactic and circumgalactic media. Simple (often single-phase) photoionization models are frequently used to decode such data. Using five discrete absorbers from the COS Absorption Survey of Baryon Harbors (CASBaH) that exhibit a wide range of detected ions (e.g., Mg II, S II--S VI, O II--O VI, Ne VIII), we show several examples where single-phase ionization models cannot reproduce the full set of measured column densities. To explore models that can self-consistently explain the measurements and kinematic alignment of disparate ions, we develop a Bayesian multiphase ionization modeling framework that characterizes discrete phases by their unique physical conditions and also investigates variations in the shape of the UV flux field, metallicity, and relative abundances. Our models require at least two (but favor three) distinct ionization phases ranging from $T \approx 10^{4}$ K photoionized gas to warm-hot phases at $T \lesssim 10^{5.8}$ K. For some ions, an apparently single absorption "component" includes contributions from more than one phase, and up to 30% of the H I is not from the lowest ionization phase. If we assume that all of the phases are photoionized, we cannot find solutions in thermal pressure equilibrium. By introducing hotter, collisionally ionized phases, however, we can achieve balanced pressures. The best models indicate moderate metallicities, often with sub-solar N/$��$, and, in two cases, ionizing flux fields that are softer and brighter than the fiducial Haardt & Madau UV background model., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Quasar outflows are fundamental components of quasar environments that might play an important role in feedback to galaxy evolution. We report on the emergence of a remarkable new outflow absorption-line system in the quasar PG1411+442 (redshift ~0.089) detected in the UV and visible with the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph, respectively. This new "transient'' system contains thousands of lines, including FeII and FeII* from excited states up to 3.89 eV, HI* Balmer lines, NaI D 5890,5896, and the first detection of HeI* 5876 in a quasar. The transient absorber is spatially inhomogeneous and compact, with sizes ~~ 23.4 and an intense radiation field ~~ 7 based on FeII*, HI*, and HeI* but they might reach log n_H(cm^-3) >~ 10 based on NaI D. The transient lines appear at roughly the same velocity shift, v ~ -1900 km/s, as a "mini-BAL'' outflow detected previously, but with narrower Doppler widths, b ~ 100 km/s, and larger column densities in more compact outflow structures. We propose that the transient lines identify a clumpy outflow from the broad emission-line region that, at its current speed and location, is still gravitationally bound to the central black hole., 21 pages, submitted to MNRAS

We present new measurements of the flux power-spectrum P(k) of the z < 0.5 H i Lyman-α Forest spanning scales $k \sim 0.001\!-\!0.1\, \mathrm{s \, km}^{-1}$. These results were derived from 65 far-ultraviolet quasar spectra (resolution $R \sim 18\, 000$) observed with the Cosmic Origin Spectrograph (COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The analysis required careful masking of all contaminating, coincident absorption from H i and metal–line transitions of the Galactic interstellar medium and intervening absorbers as well as proper treatment of the complex COS line-spread function. From the P(k) measurements, we estimate the H i photoionization rate ($\Gamma _{\rm H\,{\small I}}$) in the z < 0.5 intergalactic medium. Our results confirm most of the previous $\Gamma _{\rm H\,{\small I}}$ estimates. We conclude that previous concerns of a photon underproduction crisis are now resolved by demonstrating that the measured $\Gamma _{\rm H\,{\small I}}$ can be accounted for by ultraviolet emission from quasars alone. In a companion paper, we will present constraints on the thermal state of the z < 0.5 intergalactic medium from the P(k) measurements presented here.

We present an HST Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) spectrum of the QSO SDSS J095109.12+330745.8 ($z_{em} = 0.645$) whose sightline passes through the SMC-like dwarf galaxy UGC 5282 ($M_B = -16.0$, $cz = 1577$ km s$^{-1}$ ), 1.2 kpc in projection from the central HII region of the galaxy. Damped Ly$\alpha$ (DLA) absorption is detected at the redshift of UGC 5282 with $\log$[$N$(HI) cm$^{-2}\:$] = 20.89$^{+0.12}_{-0.21}\:\:$. Analysis of the accompanying SII, PII and OI metal lines yields a neutral gas metallicity, $Z_{HI}$, of [S/H] $\simeq$ [P/H] $= -0.80\pm0.24$. The metallicity of ionized gas from the central HII region, $Z_{HII}\:$, measured from its emission lines is [O/H]$= -0.37\pm0.10$, a difference of $+0.43\pm 0.26$ from $Z_{HI}\:$. This difference $\delta$ is consistent with that seen towards HII regions in other star-forming galaxies and supports the idea that ionized gas near star forming regions shows systematically higher metallicities than exist in the rest of a galaxy's neutral interstellar medium (ISM). The positive values of $\delta$ found in UGC 5282 (and the other star forming galaxies) is likely due to infalling low metallicity gas from the intergalactic medium that mixes with the galaxy's ISM on kpc scales. This model is also consistent with broad Ly$\alpha$ emission detected at the bottom of the DLA absorption, offset by $\sim 125$ km s$^{-1}$ from the absorption velocity. Models of galaxy evolution that attempt to replicate population characteristics, such as the mass-metallicity relation, may need to start with a galaxy metallicity represented by $Z_{HI}$ rather than that measured traditionally from $Z_{HII}\:$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. Modern cosmology predicts that matter in our Universe has assembled today into a vast network of filamentary structures colloquially termed the Cosmic Web. Because this matter is either electromagnetically invisible (i.e., dark) or too diffuse to image in emission, tests of this cosmic web paradigm are limited. Wide-field surveys do reveal web-like structures in the galaxy distribution, but these luminous galaxies represent less than 10% of baryonic matter. Statistics of absorption by the intergalactic medium (IGM) via spectroscopy of distant quasars support the model yet have not conclusively tied the diffuse IGM to the web. Here, we report on a new method inspired by the Physarum polycephalum slime mold that is able to infer the density field of the Cosmic Web from galaxy surveys. Applying our technique to galaxy and absorption-line surveys of the local Universe, we demonstrate that the bulk of the IGM indeed resides in the Cosmic Web. From the outskirts of Cosmic Web filaments, at approximately the cosmic mean matter density (rho_m) and approx. 5 virial radii from nearby galaxies, we detect an increasing H I absorption signature towards higher densities and the circumgalactic medium, to approx. 200 rho_m. We present initial results from the \textit{COS and Gemini Mapping the Circumgalactic Medium} (\mbox{CGMCGM} $\equiv$ CGM$^{2}$) survey. The CGM$^{2}$ survey consists of 1689 galaxies, all with high-quality Gemini GMOS spectra, within 1 Mpc of twenty-two $z \lesssim 1$ quasars, all with S/N$\sim$10 {\emph{HST/COS}} G130M$+$G160M spectra. For 572 of these galaxies having stellar masses $10^{7} M_{\odot} < M_{\star} < 10^{11} M_{\odot}$ and $z \lesssim 0.5$, we show that the \ion{H}{1} covering fraction above a threshold of \NHI$>10^{14} $cm$^{-2}$ is $\gtrsim 0.5$ within 1.5 virial radii ($R_{\rm vir} \sim R_{200m}$). We examine the \ion{H}{1} kinematics and find that the majority of absorption lies within $\pm$ 250 km s$^{-1}$ of the galaxy systemic velocity. We examine \ion{H}{1} covering fractions over a range of impact parameters to infer a characteristic size of the CGM, $R^{14}_{\rm CGM}$, as a function of galaxy mass. $R^{14}_{\rm CGM}$ is the impact parameter at which the probability of observing an absorber with \NHI $>$ 10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ is $>$ 50\%. In this framework, the radial extent of the CGM of $M_{\star} > 10^{9.9} M_{\odot}$ galaxies is $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 346^{+57}_{-53}$ kpc or $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 1.2R_{\rm vir}$. Intermediate-mass galaxies with $10^{9.2} < M_{\star}/M_{\odot} < 10^{9.9}$ have an extent of $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 353^{+64}_{-50}$ kpc or $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 2.4R_{\rm vir}$. Low-mass galaxies, $M_{\star} < 10^{9.2} M_{\odot}$, show a smaller physical scale $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 177_{-65}^{+70}$ kpc and extend to $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 1.6R_{\rm vir}$. Our analysis suggests that using $R_{\rm vir}$ as a proxy for the characteristic radius of the CGM likely underestimates its extent., 30 pages, 14 figures. Submitted to ApJ, Comments welcome

We describe the survey for galaxies in the fields surrounding 9 sightlines to far-UV bright, z~1 quasars that define the COS Absorption Survey of Baryon Harbors (CASBaH) program. The photometry and spectroscopy that comprise the dataset come from a mixture of public surveys (SDSS, DECaLS) and our dedicated efforts on private facilities (Keck, MMT, LBT). We report the redshifts and stellar masses for 5902 galaxies within ~10 comoving-Mpc (cMpc) of the sightlines with a median of z=0.28 and M_* ~ 10^(10.1) Msun. This dataset, publicly available as the CASBaH specDB, forms the basis of several recent and ongoing CASBaH analyses. Here, we perform a clustering analysis of the galaxy sample with itself (auto-correlation) and against the set of OVI absorption systems (cross-correlation) discovered in the CASBaH quasar spectra with column densities N(O^+5) >= 10^(13.5)/cm^2. For each, we describe the measured clustering signal with a power-law correlation function xi(r) = (r/r_0)^(-gamma) and find that (r_0,gamma) = (5.48 +/- 0.07 h_100^-1 Mpc, 1.33 +/- 0.04) for the auto-correlation and (6.00 +/- 1 h^-1 Mpc, 1.25 +/- 0.18) for galaxy-OVI cross-correlation. We further estimate a bias factor of b_gg = 1.3 +/- 0.1 from the galaxy-galaxy auto-correlation indicating the galaxies are hosted by halos with mass M_halo ~ 10^(12.1 +/- 0.05) Msun. Finally, we estimate an OVI-galaxy bias factor b_OVI = 1.0 +/- 0.1 from the cross-correlation which is consistent with OVI absorbers being hosted by dark matter halos with typical mass M_halo ~ 10^(11) Msun. Future works with upcoming datasets (e.g., CGM^2) will improve upon these results and will assess whether any of the detected OVI arises in the intergalactic medium., 25 pages, 27 figures. Using Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph G140M spectroscopy, we investigate an absorption-line system at $z$=0.07489 in the spectrum of the quasi-stellar object PG 1543+489 ($z_{QSO}$=0.401). The sightline passes within $\rho = 66$ kpc of an edge-on $2L^*$ disk galaxy at a similar redshift, but the galaxy belongs to a group with four other galaxies within $\rho =160$ kpc. We detect H I [log $N$(H I/$cm^{-2}$) = 19.12$\pm$0.04] as well as N I, Mg II, Si II, and Si III, from which we measure a gas-phase abundance of [N/H] = $-1.0\pm 0.1$. Photoionization models indicate that the nitrogen-to-silicon relative abundance is solar, yet magnesium is underabundant by a factor of $\approx$ 2. We also report spatially resolved emission-line spectroscopy of the nearby galaxy, and we extract its rotation curve. The galaxy's metallicity is $\approx 8 \times$ higher than [N/H] in the absorber, and interestingly, the absorber velocities suggest that the gas at $\rho =$ 66 kpc is corotating with the galaxy's stellar disk, possibly with an inflow component. These characteristics could indicate that this sub-damped Ly$\alpha$ absorber system arises in a "cold-accretion" flow. However, the absorber abundance patterns are peculiar. We hypothesize that the gas was ejected from its galaxy of origin (or perhaps is a result of tidal debris from interactions between the group galaxies) with a solar nitrogen abundance, but that subsequently mixed with (and was diluted by) gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) or group. If the gas is bound to the nearby galaxy, this system may be an example of the gas "recycling" predicted by theoretical galaxy simulations. We present the first results from a study of OVI absorption around galaxies at $z 2\times10^{-17}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$) at 0.680.68, we find 5 OVI absorption systems along the line of sight with identified galaxies lying at impact parameters of $b\approx100-350$ kpc (proper), whilst we find a further 13 galaxies with no significant associated OVI absorption (i.e. $N({\rm OVI}), Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, 4 tables, submitted to MNRAS 14th Sept 2018

We survey the highly ionized circumgalactic media (CGM) of 29 blindly selected galaxies at 0.49 < z_(gal) < 1.44 based on high-S/N ultraviolet spectra of z > 1 QSOs and the galaxy database from the COS Absorption Survey of Baryon Harbors (CASBaH). We detect the Ne VIII doublet in nine of the galaxies, and for gas with N(Ne VIII) > 10^13.3 cm^-2 (> 10^13.5 cm^-2), we derive a Ne VIII covering fraction f_c = 75 +15/-25% (44 +22/-20%) within impact parameter (rho) < 200 kpc of M_* = 10^(9.5-11.5) Msol galaxies and f_c = 70 +16/-22% (f_c = 42 +20/-17%) within rho < 1.5 virial radii. We estimate the mass in Ne VIII-traced gas to be M_gas(Ne VIII) > 10^9.5 Msol (Z/Zsol)^-1, or 6-20% of the expected baryonic mass if the Ne VIII absorbers have solar metallicity. Ionizing Ne VII to Ne VIII requires 207 eV, and photons with this energy are scarce in the CGM. However, for the median halo mass and redshift of our sample, the virial temperature is close to the peak temperature for the Ne VIII ion, and the Ne VIII-bearing gas is plausibly collisionally ionized near this temperature. Moreover, we find that photoionized Ne VIII requires cool and low-density clouds that would be highly underpressured (by approximately two orders of magnitude) relative to the putative, ambient virialized medium, complicating scenarios where such clouds could survive. Thus, more complex (e.g., non-equilibrium) models may be required; this first statistical sample of Ne VIII absorber/galaxy systems will provide stringent constraints for future CGM studies., Published in ApJL, Volume 877, Issue 2, Article L20

We have initiated a programme to study the physical/dynamical state of gas in galaxy clusters and the impact of the cluster environment on gaseous halos of individual galaxies using X-ray imaging and UV absorption line spectroscopy of background QSOs. Here we report results from the analysis Chandra and XMM-Newton archival data of five galaxy clusters with such QSOs, one of which has an archival UV spectrum. We characterize the gravitational masses and dynamical states, as well as the hot intracluster medium (ICM) properties of these clusters. Most clusters are dynamically disturbed clusters based on the X-ray morphology parameters, the X-ray temperature profiles, the large offset between X-ray peak and brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). The baryon contents in the hot ICM and stars of these clusters within $r_{500}$ are lower than the values expected from the gravitational masses, according to the standard cosmology. We also estimate column densities of the hot ICM along the sightlines toward the background QSOs as well as place upper limits on the warm-hot phase for the one sightline with existing UV observations. These column densities, compared with those of the warm and warm-hot ICM to be measured with UV absorption line spectroscopy, will enable us to probe the relationship among various gaseous phases and their connection to the heating/cooling and dynamical processes of the clusters. We analyze the intracluster medium (ICM) and circumgalactic medium (CGM) in 7 X-ray detected galaxy clusters using spectra of background QSOs (HST-COS/STIS), optical spectroscopy of the cluster galaxies (MMT/Hectospec and SDSS), and X-ray imaging/spectroscopy (XMM-Newton and Chandra). First, we report a very low covering fraction of H I absorption in the CGM of these cluster galaxies, f_c = 25% +25%/-15%, to stringent detection limits (log N(H I) < 13 cm^-2). As field galaxies have an H I covering fraction of ~100% at similar radii, the dearth of CGM H I in our data indicates that the cluster environment has effectively stripped or overionized the gaseous halos of these cluster galaxies. Second, we assess the contribution of warm-hot (10^5 - 10^6 K) gas to the ICM as traced by O VI and broad Ly-alpha (BLA) absorption. Despite the high signal-to-noise of our data, we do not detect O VI in any cluster, and we only detect BLA features in the QSO spectrum probing one cluster. We estimate that the total column density of warm-hot gas along this line of sight totals to ~3% of that contained in the hot T > 10^7 K X-ray emitting phase. Residing at high relative velocities, these features may trace pre-shocked material outside the cluster. Comparing gaseous galaxy halos from the low-density 'field' to galaxy groups and high-density clusters, we find that the CGM is progressively depleted of H I with increasing environmental density, and the CGM is most severely transformed in galaxy clusters. We analyze new far-ultraviolet spectra of 13 quasars from the z~0.2 COS-Halos survey that cover the HI Lyman limit of 14 circumgalactic medium (CGM) systems. These data yield precise estimates or more constraining limits than previous COS-Halos measurements on the HI column densities NHI. We then apply a Monte-Carlo Markov Chain approach on 32 systems from COS-Halos to estimate the metallicity of the cool (T~10^4K) CGM gas that gives rise to low-ionization state metal lines, under the assumption of photoionization equilibrium with the extragalactic UV background. The principle results are: (1) the CGM of field L* galaxies exhibits a declining HI surface density with impact parameter Rperp (at >99.5%$ confidence), (2) the transmission of ionizing radiation through CGM gas alone is 70+/-7%; (3) the metallicity distribution function of the cool CGM is unimodal with a median of 1/3 Z_Sun and a 95% interval from ~1/50 Z_Sun to over 3x solar. The incidence of metal poor (99.9% confidence) and, therefore, also with increasing Rperp. The high metallicity at large radii implies early enrichment; (5) A non-parametric estimate of the cool CGM gas mass is M_CGM_cool = 9.2 +/- 4.3 10^10 Msun, which together with new mass estimates for the hot CGM may resolve the galactic missing baryons problem. Future analyses of halo gas should focus on the underlying astrophysics governing the CGM, rather than processes that simply expel the medium from the halo., 26 pages with figures. We have initiated a program to study the baryon content and dynamic state of galaxy clusters. Here we present results primarily from XMM-Newton observations of two optically-selected galaxy clusters, A1095 ($z \simeq 0.210$) and A1926 ($z \simeq 0.136$). We find that both of them are actually cluster pairs at similar redshifts. We characterize the temperatures of these individual clusters through X-ray spectral fits and then estimate their gravitational masses. We show a rich set of substructures, including large position offsets between the diffuse X-ray centroids and the brightest galaxies of the clusters, which suggests that they are dynamically young. For both A1095 and A1926, we find that the mass required for the cluster pairs to be bound is smaller than the total gravitational mass. Thus both cluster pairs appear to be ongoing major mergers. Incorporating SDSS and NVSS/FIRST data, we further examine the large-scale structure environment and radio emission of the clusters to probe their origins, which also leads to the discovery of two additional X-ray-emitting clusters ($z \simeq 0.097$ and $z \simeq 0.147$) in the field of A1926. We estimate the hot gas and stellar masses of each cluster, which compared with the expected cosmological baryonic mass fraction, leave ample room for warm gas., 21 pages, 12 figures, MNRAS accepted

High-velocity clouds (HVC), fast-moving ionized and neutral gas clouds found at high galactic latitudes, may play an important role in the evolution of the Milky Way. The extent of this role depends sensitively on their distances and total sky covering factor. We search for HVC absorption in HST high resolution ultraviolet spectra of a carefully selected sample of 133 AGN using a range of atomic species in different ionization stages. This allows us to identify neutral, weakly ionized, or highly ionized HVCs over several decades in HI column densities. The sky covering factor of UV-selected HVCs with |v_LSR|>90 km/s is 68%+/-4% for the entire Galactic sky. We show that our survey is essentially complete, i.e., an undetected population of HVCs with extremely low N(H) (HI+HII) is unlikely to be important for the HVC mass budget. We confirm that the predominantly ionized HVCs contain at least as much mass as the traditional HI HVCs and show that large HI HVC complexes have generally ionized envelopes extending far from the HI contours. There are also large regions of the Galactic sky that are covered with ionized high-velocity gas with little HI emission nearby. We show that the covering factors of HVCs with 90 170 km/s are largely associated with the Magellanic Stream at b 0 as well as other large known HI complexes. Therefore there is no evidence in the Local Group that any galaxy shows a population of HVCs extending much farther away than 50 kpc from its host, except possibly for those tracing remnants of galaxy interaction.

We analyze the equivalent widths of HI Ly-$\alpha$ ($W_{Ly\alpha}$) absorption from the inner (R < 160 kpc) circumgalactic medium (CGM) of 85 galaxies at $z \sim 0$ with stellar masses $M*$ ranging $\rm{8 \leq log M* / M_{\odot} \leq 11.6}$. Across three orders of magnitude in stellar mass, the CGM of present-day galaxies exhibits a very high covering fraction of cool hydrogen gas ($f_C = 87\pm 4$\%) indicating that the CGM is ubiquitous in modern, isolated galaxies. When HI Ly-$\alpha$ is detected, its equivalent width declines with increasing radius regardless of the galaxy mass, but the scatter in this trend correlates closely with $M*$. Using the radial and stellar mass correlations, we construct a planar surface describing the cool CGM of modern galaxies: $\log W^{\rm{s}}_{HI 1215} \; = \; (0.34 \pm 0.02) -( 0.0026 \pm 0.0005)\times (R) + (0.286 \pm 0.002) \times \log (M*/M_{\odot})$. The RMS scatter around this bivariate relation is $\sim$0.2 dex. We interpret the explicit correlation between $W_{Ly\alpha}$ and $M*$ to arise from the underlying dark matter halo mass ($M_{halo}$), thereby suggesting a CGM fundamental plane between $W_{Ly\alpha}$, $R$ and $M_{halo}$. We present an analysis of the Ly-a forest toward 3C 273 from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph at ~7 km/s resolution, along with re-processed data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. The high UV flux of 3C 273 allows us to probe the weak, low z absorbers. The main sample consists of 21 HI absorbers that we could discriminate to a sensitivity of log NHI~ 12.5. The redshift density for absorbers with 13.1 = 12.5, it is consistent with numerical model predictions. The Doppler parameter distribution is consistent with other low z samples. We find no evidence for a break in the column density power-law distribution to log NHI=12.3. A broad Ly-a absorber (BLA) is within Delta v = = 12.6, consistent with the level predicted from hydrodynamical simulations, and indication for a Ly-a forest void at 0.09

The circumgalactic medium (CGM) around galaxies is believed to record various forms of galaxy feedback and contain a significant portion of the "missing baryons" of individual dark matter halos. However, clear observational evidence for the existence of the hot CGM is still absent. We use intervening galaxies along 12 background AGNs as tracers to search for X-ray absorption lines produced in the corresponding CGM. Stacking Chandra grating observations with respect to galaxy groups and different luminosities of these intervening galaxies, we obtain spectra with signal-to-noise ratios of 46-72 per 20-mA spectral bin at the expected OVII Kalpha line. We find no detectable absorption lines of CVI, NVII, OVII, OVIII, or NeIX. The high spectral quality allows us to tightly constrain upper limits to the corresponding ionic column densities (in particular log[N(OVII)(cm^{-2})], 10 pages, 7 figures, and 5 tables. To search for low-redshift damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) and sub-DLA quasar absorbers, we have conducted a 21cm absorption survey of radio-loud quasars at small impact parameters to foreground galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Here we present the first results from this survey based on observations of SDSS J104257.58+074850.5 ($z_{QSO}$ = 2.66521), a quasar at an angular separation from a foreground galaxy ($z_{gal}$ = 0.03321) of 2.5" (1.7 kpc in projection). The foreground galaxy is a low-luminosity spiral with on-going star formation (0.004 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$) and a metallicity of $-0.27 \pm 0.05$ dex. We detect 21cm absorption from the galaxy with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), the Very Large Array (VLA), and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). The absorption appears to be quiescent disk gas corotating with the galaxy and we do not find any evidence for outflowing cold neutral gas. The width of the main absorption line indicates that the gas is cold, $T_{k} < 283$ K, and the HI column is surprisingly low given the impact parameter of 1.7 kpc; we find that N(HI) $\leq 9.6 \times 10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ (GBT) and N(HI) $\leq 1.5 \times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ (VLBA). VLBA marginally resolves the continuum source and the absorber, and a lower limit of 27.1 $\times$ 13.9 pc is derived for the size of the absorbing cloud. In turn, this indicates a low density for a cold cloud, n(HI) $

We present a high signal-to-noise spectrum of a bright galaxy at z = 4.9 in 14 h of integration on VLT FORS2. This galaxy is extremely bright, i_850 = 23.10 +/- 0.01, and is strongly-lensed by the foreground massive galaxy cluster Abell 1689 (z=0.18). Stellar continuum is seen longward of the Ly-alpha emission line at ~7100 \AA, while intergalactic H I produces strong absorption shortward of Ly-alpha. Two transmission spikes at ~6800 Angstroms (A) and ~7040 A are also visible, along with other structures at shorter wavelengths. Although fainter than a QSO, the absence of a strong central ultraviolet flux source in this star forming galaxy enables a measurement of the H I flux transmission in the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the vicinity of a high redshift object. We find that the effective H I optical depth of the IGM is remarkably high within a large 14 Mpc (physical) region surrounding the galaxy compared to that seen towards QSOs at similar redshifts. Evidently, this high-redshift galaxy is located in a region of space where the amount of H I is much larger than that seen at similar epochs in the diffuse IGM. We argue that observations of high-redshift galaxies like this one provide unique insights on the nascent stages of baryonic large-scale structures that evolve into the filamentary cosmic web of galaxies and clusters of galaxies observed in the present universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL (corrected typos)

To probe the distribution and physical characteristics of interstellar gas at temperatures T ~ 3e5 K in the disk of the Milky Way, we have used the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) to observe absorption lines of OVI toward 148 early-type stars situated at distances 1 kpc. After subtracting off a mild excess of OVI arising from the Local Bubble, combining our new results with earlier surveys of OVI, and eliminating stars that show conspicuous localized X-ray emission, we find an average OVI mid-plane density n_0 = 1.3e-8 cm^-3. The density decreases away from the plane of the Galaxy in a way that is consistent with an exponential scale height of 3.2 kpc at negative latitudes or 4.6 kpc at positive latitudes. Average volume densities of OVI along different sight lines exhibit a dispersion of about 0.26 dex, irrespective of the distances to the target stars. This indicates that OVI does not arise in randomly situated clouds of a fixed size and density, but instead is distributed in regions that have a very broad range of column densities, with the more strongly absorbing clouds having a lower space density. Line widths and centroid velocities are much larger than those expected from differential Galactic rotation, but they are nevertheless correlated with distance and N(OVI), which reinforces our picture of a diverse population of hot plasma regions that are ubiquitous over the entire Galactic disk. The velocity extremes of the OVI profiles show a loose correlation with those of very strong lines of less ionized species, supporting a picture of a turbulent, multiphase medium churned by shock-heated gas from multiple supernova explosions., Accepted for publication in ApJS. The total contribution of diffuse halo gas to the galaxy baryon budget strongly depends on its dominant ionization state. In this paper, we address the physical conditions in the highly ionized circumgalactic medium (CGM) traced by OVI absorption lines observed in COS-Halos spectra. We analyze the observed ionic column densities, absorption-line widths and relative velocities, along with the ratios of NV/OVI for 39 fitted Voigt profile components of OVI. We compare these quantities with the predictions given by a wide range of ionization models. Photoionization models that include only extragalactic UV background radiation are ruled out; conservatively, the upper limits to NV/OVI and measurements of N$_{\rm OVI}$ imply unphysically large path lengths > 100 kpc. Furthermore, very broad OVI absorption (b > 40 km s$^{-1}$) is a defining characteristic of the CGM of star-forming L* galaxies. We highlight two possible origins for the bulk of the observed OVI: (1) highly structured gas clouds photoionized primarily by local high energy sources or (2) gas radiatively cooling on large scales behind a supersonic wind. Approximately 20% of circumgalactic OVI does not align with any low-ionization state gas within $\pm$50 km s$^{-1}$ and is found only in halos with M$_{\rm halo}$ < 10$^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$. We suggest that this type of unmatched OVI absorption traces the hot corona itself at a characteristic temperature of 10$^{5.5}$ K. We discuss the implications of these very distinct physical origins for the dynamical state, gas cooling rates, and total baryonic content of L* gaseous halos., 25 pages, 13 figures. QSO absorption lines are sensitive to very low density gas, and consequently, QSO spectroscopy provides a powerful tool for measuring the distribution, physical conditions, and metal enrichment of baryons in the intergalactic medium and in “dark galaxies”. However, ultraviolet spectroscopy is required to study QSO absorbers in the nearby universe where the connections between the absorbing gas and galaxies/environment can be probed. This talk reviewed several recent studies of low-zQSO absorbers in order to demonstrate the value of combining high-resolution ultraviolet spectroscopy with complementary information on the absorber environment, e.g., mapping of 21 cm emission in the vicinity of the absorbers; some notes on these examples are presented in this paper. The absorbers probed range from high-N(H I) damped Lyman α absorbers down to very low-column Lyα forest clouds with logN(H I) < 13.5. The high-N(H I) systems are candidate “dark galaxies” – these systems are more metal enriched than the high-zIGM, possibly due to in-situ star formation, and some of the absorbers are highly metal enriched. However, we have obtained follow-up 21cm emission mapping with the VLA and deep optical imaging, and while we do find H I clouds associated with the absorbers in 21cm emission, we often do not find any evidence of in-situ stars. At this juncture, it seems more likely that these low-zabsorbers were enriched with metals within galaxies and were subsequently transported out into the IGM, e.g., by tidal stripping or galactic winds. This contribution also summarizes some recent results on the search for lost baryons in the “warm-hot” (shock-heated) low-redshift IGM.

The ground electronic state of neutral atomic carbon has three fine-structure levels. In the interstellar medium, the relative populations of the upper two levels are established by collisional excitations (and de-excitations) balanced against spontaneous radiative decay. Consequently, the fractions of C I in the upper two levels indicate acceptable combinations of local temperature and density, which in turn indicate the approximate thermal pressures of the medium. We can measure the values of these fractions and how they vary from one location to the next by observing the multiplets of C I seen in absorption in the ultraviolet spectra of hot stars.We have identified 102 stars for which the HST MAST archive has E140H STIS spectra that are suitable for measuring the absorption features of C I at velocity resolutions of 3 kms−1(or better). A special analysis method developed by Jenkins & Tripp (2001) permits determinations of the amounts of C I in each of the three levels as a function of radial velocity over a wide dynamic range in column density, since several multiplets of vastly different strengths can be considered simultaneously.The C I data reveal that the much of the diffuse, cold, neutral medium has pressures that are distributed in an approximately log-normal fashion, spread over a range 1000 < p/k < 104 cm−3 K (FWHM), but with low level tails outside this range. The dispersion of pressures increases slightly for gases that have radial velocities outside the expected range for quiescent material along each line of sight. This link to the kinematics of the gas is consistent with the picture that pressure fluctuations are driven by the dynamics of a turbulent medium. If the gas is a single medium that is being driven by turbulent forces, its barytropic index (slope of log p vs. log n) is more than 0.9, which is inconsistent with the value 0.72 for material that is expected to be in thermal equilibrium. Slightly less than one part in a thousand of the gas is at pressures of order or greater than ~105cm−3 K and seems to nearly always accompany the gas at normal pressures.

We present FUSE and HST/STIS observations of the absorption line system near the emission redshift of the radio-quiet, X-ray bright quasar HE0226-4110 (z = 0.495, V=15.2). The spectra cover the rest-frame wavelength range 610--1150 A, and we detect a wide range of ionization species, including four adjacent stages of oxygen (O III-VI), which reveal a striking change in gas kinematics with ionization. Examination of the O VI 1031, 1037 doublet profiles reveals no evidence for partial coverage or unresolved saturated structure. O III is only detected in a narrow feature which is also traced by H I and C III, suggesting that they arise in the same gas. Absorption at the same velocity is also present in other species N IV, O IV-VI, S IV, and possibly N VIII, but the kinematics differ from the O III, implying production in separate gaseous phases. The H I, O II-IV, and C III information in yield an estimate of both the photoionization parameter and metallicity of the O III-bearing gas: [O/H]=+0.12(-0.03/+0.16), log U=-2.29(-0.23/+0.02). We discuss two possible locations for the gas in this associated absorption-line system: the narrow emission line region of the quasar, and the halo of the quasar host galaxy. An additional narrow (thus, photoionized) component that is only detected in O VI appears 58 km/s redward of the O III-bearing gas with -0.35 < log U < 0.02. Additional structure is detected in the associated absorber in the form of two broad components which only appear in moderate to high ionization species. We present STIS 7km/s resolution data of the Ly-a forest toward PKS0405-123 (z=0.574). We make two samples. The strong sample (60 systems) has column density logNHI>13.3 over 0.002 13.1 at 0.020 14.0. For 13.1 13.3, consistent with a numerical model. There is a void in the strong sample at 0.0320 13.5-14.0. The strength is similar to that of the galaxy-galaxy correlation for our sample, implying that such Ly-a systems have mass log M/Msun= 11.3+1.0-0.6. Including lower column density systems in the sample shows correlations only out to Delta v

We discuss physical properties and baryonic content of broad Ly alpha absorbers (BLAs) at low redshift. These absorption systems, recently discovered in high-resolution, high-signal to noise quasar absorption line spectra, possibly trace the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) in the temperature range between 10^5 and 10^6 K. To extend previous BLA measurements we have analyzed STIS data of the two quasars H 1821+643 and PG 0953+415 and have identified 13 BLA candidates along a total (unblocked) redshift path of dz=0.440. Combining our measurements with previous results for the lines of sight toward PG 1259+593 and PG 1116+215, the resulting new BLA sample consists of 20 reliably detected systems as well as 29 additional tentative cases, implying a BLA number density of dN/dz=22-53. We estimate that the contribution of BLAs to the baryon density at z=0 is Omega_b(BLA)>0.0027 h_70^-1 for absorbers with log (N/b)>11.3. This number indicates that WHIM broad Ly alpha absorbers contain a substantial fraction of the baryons in the local Universe. High resolution FUSE and STIS observations of the bright QSO HE 0226-4110 (zem = 0.495) reveal the presence of a multi-phase absorption line system at zabs(O VI) = 0.20701 containing absorption from H I (Ly alpha to Ly theta), C III, O III, O IV, O VI, N III, Ne VIII, Si III, S VI and possibly S V. Single component fits to the Ne VIII and O VI absorption doublets yield logN(Ne VIII) = 13.89+/-0.11 and logN(O VI) = 14.37+/-0.03. The Ne VIII and O VI doublets are detected at 3.9 sigma and 16 sigma significance levels, respectively. This represents the first detection of intergalactic Ne VIII, a diagnostic of gas with temperature in the range from 5x10(5) to 1x10(6) K. The O VI and Ne VIII are not likely created in a low density medium photoionized solely by the extragalactic background at z = 0.2 since the required path length of ~11 Mpc implies the Hubble flow absorption line broadening would be ~10 times greater than the observed line widths. A collisional ionization origin is therefore more likely. Assuming [Ne/H] and [O/H] = -0.5, the value N(Ne VIII)/N(O VI) = 0.33+/-0.10 is consistent with gas in collisional ionization equilibrium near T=5.4x10(5) K with logN(H)= 19.9 and N(H)/N(H I) = 1.7x10(6). The observations support the basic idea that a substantial fraction of the baryonic matter at low redshift exists in hot very highly ionized gaseous structures.

Current measurements indicate that the deuterium abundance in diffuse interstellar gas varies spatially by a factor of ~4 among sight lines extending beyond the Local Bubble. One plausible explanation for the scatter is the variable depletion of D onto dust grains. To test this scenario, we have obtained high signal-to-noise, high- resolution profiles of the refractory ion Ti II along seven Galactic sight lines with D/H ranging from 0.65 to 2.1 × 10-5. These measurements, acquired with the recently upgraded Keck/HIRES spectrometer, indicate a correlation between Ti/H and D/H at the better than 95% confidence level Therefore, our observations support the interpretation that D/H scatter is associated with differential depletion. We note, however, that Ti/H values taken from the literature do not uniformly show the correlation. Finally, we identify significant component-to-component variations in the depletion levels among individual sight lines and discuss complications arising from this behavior.

The extraordinarily bright quasar PHL 1811 at a redshift z = 0.192 provides an attractive opportunity to use ultraviolet absorption-line spectroscopy to study the properties of gas systems in the local universe. An R = 20,000 far-UV spectrum recorded by FUSE revealed 7 extragalactic absorption systems, one of which is a Lyman limit system at z = 0.08093 accompanied by three systems having redshifts which differ from it by less than 0.008. The abundance of O with respect to Fe in the Lyman limit system is not much different from the solar abundance ratio. Supplementary low resolution spectra recorded by STIS (on HST) at longer wavelengths helped to substantiate our identifications of systems in the FUSE spectrum and suggested the presence of an additional 4 systems that could be detected only through their Ly-alpha features. Spectroscopy at visible wavelengths of 7 galaxies within approximately 2' of PHL 1811 indicated that 2 of them are near the redshift of the quasar and 4 have redshifts within 850 km/s of the extragalactic absorption systems. The Lyman limit system is likely associated with an L* galaxy lying 23" from the sightline. Finally, in addition to prominent features at very low velocities arising from the disk of our Galaxy, the strong resonance transitions of C II and Mg II show evidence for material at v = -200 km/s; the column densities of these two species suggest that 17.7 < log N(H I) < 18.1 if the material has a solar composition., 47 pages, 5 figures, to appear in the June 2003 issue of the Astronomical Journal

(Abridged) We present a new high-resolution (7 km/s FWHM) echelle spectrum of 3C 351 obtained with STIS. 3C 351 lies behind the low-latitude edge of high-velocity cloud Complex C, and the new spectrum provides accurate measurements of O I, Si II, Al II, Fe II, and Si III absorption lines at the velocity of the HVC. We use collisional and photoionization models to derive ionization corrections; in both models we find that the overall metallicity Z = 0.1 - 0.3 Z_{solar} in Complex C, but nitrogen must be underabundant. The iron abundance indicates that Complex C contains very little dust. The absorbing gas probably is not gravitationally confined. The gas could be pressure-confined by an external medium, but alternatively we may be viewing the leading edge of the HVC, which is ablating and dissipating as it plunges into the Milky Way. O VI column densities observed with FUSE toward nine QSOs/AGNs behind Complex C support this conclusion: N(O VI) is highest near 3C 351, and the O VI/H I ratio increases substantially with decreasing latitude, suggesting that the lower-latitude portion of the cloud is interacting more vigorously with the Galaxy. The other sight lines through Complex C show some dispersion in metallicity, but with the current uncertainties, the measurements are consistent with a constant metallicity throughout the HVC. However, all of the Complex C sight lines require significant nitrogen underabundances. Finally, we compare the 3C 351 sight line to the sight line to the nearby QSO H1821+643 to search for evidence of outflowing Galactic fountain gas that could be mixing with Complex C. We find that the intermediate-velocity gas detected toward 3C 351 and H1821+643 has a higher metallicity and may well be a fountain/chimney outflow from the Perseus spiral arm., Submitted to AJ. Using Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations of 89 QSO sightlines through the Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint, we study the relationships between C IV absorption systems and the properties of nearby galaxies as well as large-scale environment. To maintain sensitivity to very faint galaxies, we restrict our sample to 0.0015 < z < 0.015, which defines a complete galaxy survey to L > 0.01 L* or stellar mass log M_* > 8 Msun. We report two principal findings. First, for galaxies with impact parameter rho < 1 rvir, C IV detection strongly depends on the luminosity/stellar mass of the nearby galaxy. C IV is preferentially associated with galaxies with log M_* > 9.5 Msun; lower mass galaxies rarely exhibit significant C IV absorption (covering fraction f = 9 +12-6% for 11 galaxies with log M_* < 9.5 Msun). Second, C IV detection within the log M_* > 9.5 Msun population depends on environment. Using a fixed-aperture environmental density metric for galaxies with rho < 160 kpc at z < 0.055, we find that 57+/-12% (8/14) of galaxies in low-density regions (regions with fewer than seven L > 0.15 L* galaxies within 1.5 Mpc) have affiliated C IV absorption; however, none (0/7) of the galaxies in denser regions show C IV. Similarly, the C IV detection rate is lower for galaxies residing in groups with dark-matter halo masses of log Mhalo > 12.5 Msun. In contrast to C IV, H I is pervasive in the CGM without regard to mass or environment. These results indicate that C IV absorbers with log N(C IV) > 13.5 cm^-2 trace the halos of log M_* > 9.5 Msun galaxies but also reflect larger scale environmental conditions., 26 pages, 13 figures. Using high S/N STIS echelle spectra (FWHM=7 km/s) of 3C 273, we constrain the metallicities of two Lya clouds in the vicinity of the Virgo cluster. We detect C II, Si II, and Si III absorption lines in the Lya absorber at z = 0.00530. Previous observations with FUSE have revealed Ly beta - Ly theta lines at this redshift, thereby accurately constraining N(H I). We model the ionization of the gas and derive [C/H] = -1.2^{+0.3}_{-0.2}, [Si/C] = 0.2+/-0.1, and log n_{H} = -2.8+/-0.3. The model implies a small absorber thickness, ~70 pc, and thermal pressure p/k ~ 40 cm^{-3} K. It is most likely that the absorber is pressure confined by an external medium because gravitational confinement would require a very high ratio of dark matter to baryonic matter. Based on Milky Way sight lines in which carbon and silicon abundances have been reliably measured in the same interstellar cloud (including new measurements presented herein), we argue that the overabundance of Si relative to C is not due to dust depletion. Instead, this probably indicates that the gas has been predominately enriched by Type II supernovae. Such enrichment is most plausibly provided by an unbound galactic wind, given the absence of galaxies within a projected distance of 100 kpc and the presence of galaxies capable of driving a wind at larger distances. We also constrain the metallicity and physical conditions of the Virgo absorber at z = 0.00337 based on detections of O VI and H I and an upper limit on C IV. If this absorber is collisionally ionized, the O VI/C IV limit requires T > 10^{5.3} K. For either collisional ionization or photoionization, we find that [O/H] > -2.0 at z = 0.00337.

High-resolution far-UV spectra of the O-type subdwarf BD +28°4211 were obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) to measure the interstellar deuterium, nitrogen, and oxygen abundances in this direction. The interstellar D I transitions are analyzed down to Lyι at 920.7 A. The star was observed several times at different target offsets in the direction of spectral dispersion. The aligned and co-added spectra have high signal-to-noise ratios (S/N = 50-100). D I, N I, and O I transitions were analyzed with curve-of-growth and profile fitting techniques. A model of interstellar molecular hydrogen on the line of sight was derived from H2 lines in the FUSE spectra and used to help analyze some features where blending with H2 was significant. The H I column density was determined from high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph spectra of Lyα to be log N(H ) = 19.846 ± 0.035 (2 σ), which is higher than is typical for sight lines in the local interstellar medium (ISM) studied for D/H. We found that D/H = (1.39 ± 0.21) × 10-5 (2 σ) and O/H = (2.37 ± 0.55) × 10-4 (2 σ). O/H toward BD +28°4211 appears to be significantly below the mean O/H ratio for the ISM and the Local Bubble.

We present measurements of the column densities of interstellar D I and O I made with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and of H I made with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) toward the sdOB star Feige 110 [(l,b) = (7409, - 5907); d = 179 pc; z = -154 pc]. Our determination of the D I column density made use of curve-of-growth fitting and profile fitting analyses, while our O I column density determination used only curve-of-growth techniques. The H I column density was estimated by fitting the damping wings of the interstellar Ly? profile. We find log N(D ) = 15.47 ? 0.06, log N(O ) = 16.73 ? 0.10, and log N(H ) = 20.14 (all errors 2 ?). This implies D/H = (2.14 ? 0.82) ? 10-5, D/O = ? 10-2, and O/H = (3.89 ? 1.67) ? 10-4. Taken with the FUSE results reported in companion papers and previous measurements of the local interstellar medium (LISM), this suggests the possibility of spatial variability in D/H for sight lines exceeding ~100 pc. This result may constrain models which characterize the mixing timescales and length scales of material in the LISM.

Observations obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) have been used to determine the column densities of D I, O I, and N I along seven sight lines that probe the local interstellar medium (LISM) at distances from 37 pc to 179 pc. Five of the sight lines are within the Local Bubble and two penetrate the surrounding H I wall. Reliable values of N(H I) were determined for five of the sight lines from HST data, IUE data, and published EUVE measurements. The weighted mean of D I/H I for these five sight lines is (1.52 +/- 0.08) x10-5 (1 sigma uncertainty in the mean). It is likely that the D I/H I ratio in the Local Bubble has a single value. The D I/O I ratio for the five sight lines within the Local Bubble is (3.76 +/- 0.20) x10-2. It is likely that the O I column densities can serve as a proxy for H I in the Local Bubble. The weighted mean for O I/H I for the seven FUSE sight lines is (3.03 +/-0.21) x10-4, comparable to the weighted mean (3.43 +/- 0.15) x10-4 reported for 13 sight lines probing larger distances and higher column densities (Meyer et al. 1998, Meyer 2001). The FUSE weighted mean of N I/H I for the five sight lines is half that reported by Meyer et al. (1997) for seven sight lines with larger distances and higher column densities. This result combined with the variability of O I/N I (six sight lines) indicates that at the low column densities found in the LISM, nitrogen ionization balance is important. Thus, unlike O I, N I cannot be used as a proxy for H I or as a metallicity indicator in the LISM. We present an HST Space Telescope Imaging System (STIS) spectrum of the He II Gunn-Peterson effect toward HE 2347-4342. Compared to the previous HST Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph data obtained by Reimers et al. the STIS spectrum has a much improved resolution. The two-dimensional detector also allows us to better characterize the sky and dark background. We confirm the presence of two spectral ranges of much reduced opacity, the opacity gaps, and provide improved lower limits on the He II Gunn-Peterson opacity τ in the high-opacity regions. We use the STIS spectrum together with a Keck-HIRES spectrum covering the corresponding H I Lyα forest to calculate a one-dimensional map of the softness S of the ionization radiation along the line of sight toward HE 2347-4342, where S is the ratio of the H I to He II photoionization rates. We find that S is generally large but presents important variations, from ~30 in the opacity gaps to a 1 σ lower limit of 2300 at z 2.86, in a region that shows an extremely low H I opacity over a 6.5 A spectral range. We note that a large softness parameter naturally accounts for most of the large Si IV/C IV ratios seen in other quasar absorption line spectra. We present a simple model that reproduces the shape of the opacity gaps in absence of large individual absorption lines. We extend the model described in Heap et al. to account for the presence of sources close to the line of sight of the background quasar. As an alternative to the delayed reionization model suggested by Reimers et al., we propose that the large softness observed at z 2.86 is due to the presence of bright soft sources close to the line of sight, i.e., for which the ratio between the number of H I to He II ionizing photons reaching the intergalactic medium is large. We discuss these two models and suggest ways to discriminate between them.

We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) observations of the intergalactic medium toward the bright QSO PG 0953+415 (zem = 0.239). The FUSE spectra extend from 905 to 1187 A and have a resolution of 25 km s-1, while the STIS spectra cover 1150-1730 A and have a resolution of 7 km s-1. Additional STIS observations at 30 km s-1 are obtained in selected wavelength ranges. An O VI system at z = 0.06807 is detected in H I Lyα, Lyβ, Lyγ, O VI λλ1031.93, 1037.62, N V λλ1238.82, 1242.80, C IV λλ1548.20, 1550.77, and C III λ977.02. The observed column densities can be modeled as a low-density intervening gas with a metallicity of 0.4 times solar in photoionization equilibrium with the ionizing extragalactic background radiation. The best fit is achieved with an ionization parameter, log U = -1.35, which implies nH ~ 10-5 cm-3 and a path length of ~80 kpc through the absorbing gas. H I Lyα absorption at z = 0.14232 spans a velocity range of 410 km s-1 with the strongest components near 0 and 80 km s-1 in the z = 0.14232 rest frame. In this system, O VI λλ1031.93, 1037.62 absorption is strong near 0 km s-1 and not detected at 80 km s-1. C III λ977.02 absorption is marginally detected at 80 km s-1 but is not detected at 0 km s-1. The observations place constraints on the properties of the z = 0.14232 system but do not discriminate between collisional ionization in hot gas versus photoionization in a very low density medium with an ionization parameter log U > -0.74. The z = 0.06807 and 0.14232 O VI systems occur at redshifts where there are peaks in the number density of intervening galaxies along the line of sight determined from WIYN redshift measurements of galaxies in the ~1° field centered on PG 0953+415. We combine our observations of PG 0953+415 with those for other QSOs to update the estimate of the low-redshift number density of intervening O VI systems. Over a total unobscured redshift path of Δz = 0.43, we detect six O VI systems with rest-frame equivalent widths of the O VI λ1031.93 line exceeding 50 mA, yielding dN/dz = 14 for z = 0.09. This implies a low-redshift value of the baryonic contribution to the closure density of the O VI systems of Ωb(O VI) > 0.002 h, assuming that the average metallicity in the O VI systems is 0.1 solar.

We report new observations of circumgalactic gas from the COS-Dwarfs survey, a systematic investigation of the gaseous halos around 43 low-mass z $\leq$ 0.1 galaxies using background QSOs observed with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. From the projected 1D and 2D distribution of C IV absorption, we find that C IV absorption is detected out to ~ 0.5 R$_{vir}$ of the host galaxies. The C IV absorption strength falls off radially as a power law and beyond 0.5 R$_{vir}$, no C IV absorption is detected above our sensitivity limit of ~ 50-100 m$��$. We find a tentative correlation between detected C IV absorption strength and star formation, paralleling the strong correlation seen in highly ionized oxygen for L~L* galaxies by the COS-Halos survey. The data imply a large carbon reservoir in the CGM of these galaxies, corresponding to a minimum carbon mass of $\gtrsim$ 1.2$\times 10^6$ $M_\odot$ out to ~ 110 kpc. This mass is comparable to the carbon mass in the ISM and more than the carbon mass currently in stars of these galaxies. The C IV absorption seen around these sub-L* galaxies can account for almost two-thirds of all $W_r$> 100 m$��$ C IV absorption detected at low z. Comparing the C IV covering fraction with hydrodynamical simulations, we find that an energy-driven wind model is consistent with the observations whereas a wind model of constant velocity fails to reproduce the CGM or the galaxy properties., 18 Pages, 11 Figures, ApJ 796 136

We analyze the physical conditions of the cool, photoionized (T $\sim 10^4$ K) circumgalactic medium (CGM) using the COS-Halos suite of gas column density measurements for 44 gaseous halos within 160 kpc of $L \sim L^*$ galaxies at $z \sim 0.2$. These data are well described by simple photoionization models, with the gas highly ionized (n$_{\rm HII}$/n$_{\rm H} \gtrsim 99\%$) by the extragalactic ultraviolet background (EUVB). Scaling by estimates for the virial radius, R$_{\rm vir}$, we show that the ionization state (tracked by the dimensionless ionization parameter, U) increases with distance from the host galaxy. The ionization parameters imply a decreasing volume density profile n$_{\rm H}$ = (10$^{-4.2 \pm 0.25}$)(R/R$_{\rm vir})^{-0.8\pm0.3}$. Our derived gas volume densities are several orders of magnitude lower than predictions from standard two-phase models with a cool medium in pressure equilibrium with a hot, coronal medium expected in virialized halos at this mass scale. Applying the ionization corrections to the HI column densities, we estimate a lower limit to the cool gas mass M$_{\rm CGM}^{\rm cool} > 6.5 \times 10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ for the volume within R $, Comment: 19 pages, 12 Figures, and a 37-page Appendix with 36 additional figures. We use high-resolution UV spectra of the radio-quiet QSO H1821+643 (z_em = 0.297), obtained with STIS and FUSE, to study the ionization and metallicity of an intervening O VI absorption line system at z(abs) = 0.1212. This absorber has the following notable properties: (1) Several galaxies are close to the sight line at the absorber redshift, including an actively star-forming galaxy at a projected distance of 144 kpc. (2) There is a complex cluster of H I lya absorption lines near the O VI redshift, including at least five components spread over a velocity range of ~700 km/s . (3) The strongest lya line in the cluster appears to be composed of a mildly saturated component with a typical b-value blended with a broad component with b = 85 km/s . (4) The O VI absorption is not aligned with the strongest H I absorption, but instead is well-aligned with the broad component. (5) The only detected species (>4sigma) are O VI and H I despite coverage of strong transitions of other abundant elements. Based on these constraints, we find that the absorption line properties can be produced in collisionally ionized gas with roughly 5.3 < log T < 5.6 and -1.8 < [O/H] < -0.6. However, we find that photoionization is also viable if the pathlength l through the absorbing gas is long enough; simple photoionization models require 85 < l < 1900 kpc and -1.1 < [O/H] < -0.3. Hydrodynamic simulations of growth of cosmic structure suggest that 30%-50% of the total baryons at z = 0 may be in a warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) with temperatures of ~105-107 K. The O VI λλ1032, 1038 absorption line doublet in the far-UV portion of quasar spectra provides an important probe of this gas. Utilizing recent hydrodynamic simulations, it is found that there should be about five O VI absorption lines per unit redshift with equivalent widths of ≥35 mA, decreasing rapidly to ~0.5 per unit redshift at ≥350 mA. About 10% of the total baryonic matter or 20%-30% of the WHIM is expected to be in the O VI absorption line systems with equivalent width ≥20 mA; the remaining WHIM gas may be too hot or have too low a metallicity to be detected in O VI. We find that the simulation results agree well with observations with regard to the line abundance and total mass contained in these systems. Some of the O VI systems are collisionally ionized and some are photoionized, but most of the mass is in the collisionally ionized systems. We show that the gas that produces the O VI absorption lines does not reside in virialized regions such as galaxies, groups, or clusters of galaxies but rather has an overdensity of 10-40 times the average density. These regions form a somewhat connected network of filaments. The typical metallicity of these regions is 0.1-0.3 Z☉.

We detect 21-cm emission from the Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxy SBS 1543+593, which gives rise to a Damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) absorption line in the spectrum of the background QSO HS 1543+5921 (z=0.807). We obtain an accurate measure of the velocity of the H I gas in the LSB galaxy, v=2868 km/s, and derive a mass of 1.3e9 solar masses. We compare this value with limits obtained towards two other z~0.1 DLA systems, and show that SBS 1543+593 would not have been detected. Hence LSB galaxies similar to SBS 1543+593 can be responsible for DLA systems at even modest redshifts without being detectable from their 21-cm emission., 4 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in A&A

We examine the Ly-alpha absorber population at z

Ground-based & HST images of the nearby galaxy SBS 1543+593 (z=0.009) show it to be a Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxy with a central surface brightness of mu_B(0)=23.2 mag/arcsec-2 and scale length 0.9 h-1 kpc, values typical for the local LSB galaxy population. The galaxy lies directly in front of the QSO HS 1543+5921 (z=0.807); an HST STIS spectrum of the quasar reveals a damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) line at the redshift of the interloper with an HI column density of log N(HI) = 20.35, as well as several low-ionization metal lines with strengths similar to those found in the Milky Way interstellar medium. Our data show that LSB galaxies are certainly able to produce the DLA lines seen at higher redshift, and fuels the speculation that LSB galaxies are a major contributor to that population of absorbers.

To measure interstellar atomic deuterium abundances, we used the Interstellar Medium Absorption Profile Spectrograph (IMAPS) to obtain spectra of gamma2 Vel and zeta Pup over the wavelength interval 930-1150 A at a resolving power of 80,000. The interstellar D I features are resolved and cleanly separated from interstellar H I in the Ly-delta and Ly-epsilon profiles of both sight lines, and also in the Ly-gamma profile of zeta Pup. The D I profiles were modeled using a velocity template derived from several N I lines in the IMAPS spectra recorded at higher S/N. To find the best D I column density, we minimized chi-squares for model D I profiles that included not only the N(D I) as a free parameter, but also the effects of several potential sources of systematic error which could also be varied. For both stars, H I column densities were measured by analyzing Ly-alpha absorption profiles in a large number of IUE high dispersion spectra. Ultimately we found that D/H = 2.18(+0.36,-0.31)e-5 for gamma2 Vel and 1.42(+0.25,-0.23)e-5 for zeta Pup, values that contrast markedly with D/H derived in Paper I for delta Ori (the stated errors are 90% confidence limits). Evidently, the atomic D/H ratio in the ISM, averaged over path lengths of 250 to 500 pc, exhibits significant spatial variability. Furthermore, variations in D/H do not appear to be anticorrelated with N/H. Within the framework of standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, the large value of D/H found toward gamma2 Vel is equivalent to a cosmic baryon density of Omega_B h^2 = 0.023 (+-0.002), which we regard as an upper limit since there is no correction for the destruction of deuterium in stars., Comment: 37 pages, 10 figures, to appear in the Astrophysical Journal

We report the discovery of an O VI absorption system at z(abs) = 0.14232 in a high resolution FUV spectrum of PG0953+415 obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). Both lines of the O VI 1032, 1038 doublet and multicomponent H I Lya absorption are detected, but the N V doublet and the strong lines of C II and Si III are not apparent. We examine the ionization mechanism of the O VI absorber and find that while theoretical considerations favor collisional ionization, it is difficult to observationally rule out photoionization. If the absorber is collisionally ionized, it may not be in equilibrium due to the rapid cooling of gas in the appropriate temperature range. Non-equilibrium collisionally ionized models are shown to be consistent with the observations. A WIYN survey of galaxy redshifts near the sight line has revealed a galaxy at a projected distance of 395 kpc separated by ~130 km/s from this absorber, and three additional galaxies are found within 130 km/s of this redshift with projected separations ranging from 1.0 Mpc to 3.0 Mpc. Combining the STIS observations of PG0953+415 with previous high S/N GHRS observations of H1821+643, we derive a large number of O VI absorbers per unit redshift, dN/dz ~20. We use this sample to obtain a first estimate of the cosmological mass density of the O VI systems at z ~ 0. If further observations confirm the large dN/dz derived for the O VI systems, then these absorbers trace a significant reservoir of baryonic matter at low redshift., Accepted for publication in Ap.J., vol. 542 (Oct. 10, 2000)

We have obtained moderate resolution spectra of the bright QSO H1821+643 (z=0.297) in the wavelength interval 990-1185A with FUSE. Strong, complex OVI 1032 and FeII 1145 absorption arising in gas above several spiral arms and the outer warp of our Galaxy is detected. We have identified absorption by a high negative-velocity (-215 km/s) component of OVI, which corresponds to the limiting velocity of v_LSR = 190+/-20 km/s for Milky Way gas along this line of sight, assuming corotation of disk and halo gas and a flat rotation curve for the outer galaxy. We report the detection of four absorbers in the intergalactic medium, through detections of Lyman beta at z=0.2454 and z=0.1213, Lyman delta, epsilon, zeta in a system at z=0.2249, CIII 977 at z=0.1705, and OVI 1032 at z=0.12137. The FUSE data show that the Lyman absorbers at z=0.225 are composed of 2 components separated by 70 km/s. Finally, we have observed associated absorption from OIII 832, OIV 787, and possibly SV 786 at the redshift of the QSO (z= 0.297). NeVIII 770,780 is not detected in this associated system. When combined with the previous detection of associated OVI 1032 (Savage et al, 1998), we conclude that this system is a multiphase absorber, and we discuss the origin of the absorption in this context.

The ultraviolet spectrum (1145¨1720 of the distant quasar Q0302(003 (z \ 3.286) was observed at Ae ) 1.8 resolution with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope .A Ae total integration time of 23,280 s was obtained. The spectrum clearly delineates the Gunn-Peterson He II absorption trough, produced by He II Lya along the line of sight over the redshift range z \ 2.78¨3.28. Its interpretation was facilitated by modeling based on Keck HIRES spectra of the H I Lya forest (provided by A. Songaila and by M. Rauch and W. Sargent). We —nd that near the quasar, He II Lya absorption is produced by discrete clouds, with no signi—cant diUuse gas; this is attributed to a He II ii proximity eUect ˇˇ in which the quasar fully ionizes He in the diUuse intergalactic medium, but not the He in denser clouds. By two diUerent methods we calculate that the average He II Lya opacity at z B 3.15 is q " 4.8. In the Dobrzycki-Bechtold void in the H I Lya forest near z \ 3.18, the average He II opacity Such large opacities require the presence of a diUuse gas component as well as a q \ 4.47 ~0.330.48. soft UV background spectrum, whose softness parameter, de—ned as the ratio of the photoionization rate in H I over the one in He II
