Abstract: The design and parameters of the polarized-beam facility at U-70 proton synchrotron of NRC Kurchatov Institute - IHEP are presented. 2. Calculation method of R1234yf phase equilibrium curve within temperature range from 122.6 K to 367.85 K

Abstract: A new calculation method is considered for calculating pressure ps and density ρ− of saturated steam, density ρ+ of saturated liquid and of the heat of vaporization r within the temperature range from Tt to Tc, where Tt is the triple-point temperature, Tc is the critical temperature. A specific feature of the method is the ability to predict the ps, ρ−, ρ+ values even in the absence of experimental data on the particular properties in the vicinity of the triple point. The method has been tested on the example of computation for the R1234yf refrigerant within the temperature range of 122.6≤T≤367.85 K. For this purpose, for R1234yf, on the basis of the modified Clapeyron-Clausius equation ρ−=Tps′(T)/r*(T) and the perfect gas law, a set of mutually agreed equations including equations ps = ps(T), ρ− = ρ−(T), ρ+ = ρ+(T) and r*(T) = r(T)/(1−ρ−/ρ+) has been developed. In addition to the above, in the vicinity of the critical point, the mean diameter of the saturation curve satisfies the Yang-Yang model. Within the temperature range from Tt = 122.6 К to Tc = 367.85 К, the thermodynamic tables for R1234yf have been calculated including for the values of ps, ρ−, ρ+, r and r*.

3. Recombination Waves in Dusty Plasma of a Non-Self-Sustained Discharge

Abstract: The steady-state, spatially periodic, structures generated by the evolution of the nonlinear stage of recombination instability in dusty plasma of a non-self-sustained discharge are studied. The research has revealed two types of structures typical for this kind of discharge; they differ in the rates of the increment of recombination instability. The features of each type of structure are described, and the mechanism of their formation is presented. It is shown that the calculation results qualitatively and, with a small variation of discharge parameters, quantitatively agree with the experimental data.

4. Construction of a system of kinetic equations for a nonideal gas

Abstract: For molecules interacting among each other with the potential having both repulsive and attractive components, a system of kinetic equations is derived using the Bogolyubov method, which takes into account the effect of forming bound states by molecules. This system implies all conservation laws and their corollaries that are invariant under the Galilean transformation. With consideration of the relaxation problem for the given system of kinetic equations, the Н-theorem can be obtained. It is noted that the equation of state, which is derived in this case, coincides in form with the van der Waals equation of state.

Abstract: The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum ($0.4$1\,GeV/$c$) direct-photon yield $dN_{\gamma}^{\rm dir}/d\eta$ is a smooth function of $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$ and can be well described as proportional to $(dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta)^\alpha$ with $\alpha{\approx}1.25$. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different, $A$$+$$A$ collision systems. At a given beam energy the scaling also holds for high $p_T$ ($>5$\,GeV/$c$) but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield., Comment: 673 authors from 82 institutions, 10 pages, 4 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters. 6. Analytical reconstruction of pp elastic scattering amplitudes from the complete sets of experiments at the SPASCHARM facility at U70

Abstract: The direct reconstruction of the pp elastic scattering amplitudes at the energy of 16 GeV is discussed. At the SPASCHARM experiment, the 19 different spin dependent observables will be measured in pp elastic scattering. The suggested selection of observables allows a complete analytical reconstruction of elastic scattering amplitudes as a solution of the system of bilinear equations. A set of physical observables, which are necessary for model independent reconstruction of all five complex elastic pp scattering amplitudes, is defined.

Abstract: The SPASCHARM experiment at U70 aims an exploration of a fundamental problem in modern particle physics, the role of spin in strong interactions. At present, the first physics data have been accumulated at a negative 28 GeV beam, interacting with a frozen polarized proton target. The SPASCHARM wide-aperture spectrometer can detect both charged and neutral particles in the large solid angle with 2π azimuthal coverage in the fragmentation region of beam-particles. It covers the kinematic region of non-perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD), where the theoretical predictions are difficult and unreliable due to the full strength quark confinement at low and medium momentum transfers. In this report, the current status of the experiment is presented. The algorithm for reconstructing charged tracks is discussed along with its results on real data and the comparison with the Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Based on a real track reconstruction, the statistical errors for the measurements of single-spin asymmetries in inclusive charged pion production are estimated. The data analysis is in progress.

Abstract: In the Spring 2018, the first physics data was accumulated in the new SPASCHARM experiment at U-70 accelerator of IHEP, Protvino. The first stage of SPASCHARM’s physics programs prursues the goal of studying spin effects in the beam fragmentation region at an unpolarized negative 28 GeV beam, interacting with a frozen polarized proton target. In this resport, the feasibility of measuring the single spin asymmetry AN in the reaction: π − + p↑→K 0 S + X is evaluated by Monte-Carlo simulations. We present estimates of the detection efficiency as well as for expected event statistics. It is shown that, in the process of interest above, the attainable statistical errors for AN would be at the scale of a few percents.

Abstract: In this article, the derivation of the Boltzmann equation from BBKIY of the chain is generalized for the case when the intermolecular interaction potential has both repulsive and attractive components. In this case, the application of the Bogolyubov method leads to situation when the term taking into account the transfer of molecules from the region where the hypothesis of the molecular chaos occurs into the region where molecules are arranged in a bound state is added to the usual collision integral. A two-particle distribution function of molecules in the bound state is assumed to be quasi-equilibrium with parameters depending on the variables that characterize the Boltzmann gas. Kinetic equations are written for these parameters performing the corresponding averaging over the region of bound states. Thus, this resulted in a closed set of kinetic equations describing nonideal gas. After introducing the corresponding macroparameters, all conservation laws and their consequences invariant relative to the Galileo transform follow from the corresponding set. The equation of state derived for such gas resembles the van der Waals equation by form. When considering the relaxation problem, the H-theorem is proven.

Abstract: We report a measurement of e+e− pairs from semileptonic heavy-flavor decays in p+p collisions at sNN=200 GeV. The e+e− pair yield from bb¯ and cc¯ is separated by exploiting a double differential fit done simultaneously in dielectron invariant mass and pT. We used three different event generators, pythia, mc@nlo, and powheg, to simulate the e+e− spectra from cc¯ and bb¯ production. The data can be well described by all three generators within the detector acceptance. However, when using the generators to extrapolate to 4π, significant differences are observed for the total cross section. These difference are less pronounced for bb¯ than for cc¯. The same model dependence was observed in already published d+A data. The p+p data are also directly compared with d+A data in mass and pT, and within the statistical accuracy no nuclear modification is seen.

Abstract: The only comparative study of the inclusive pion single-spin asymmetries produced in the interactions of the polarized protons and antiprotons in collisions with unpolarized proton was carried out at E-704 experiment. Significant asymmetries were found at large $x_{F}$ and middle $p_{T}$, $\pi^{+}$ and $\pi^{0}$ asymmetries have positive signs while $\pi^{-}$ has negative one in the $p^{\uparrow}+p$ collisions, while in the $\bar{p}^{\uparrow}+p$ interactions the $\pi^{-}$ and $\pi^{0}$ asymmetries have positive signs while $\pi^{+}$ has negative sign. 14. Numerical study of unsteady rarefied diatomic gas flows in a plane microchannel

Abstract: The numerical solution of a kinetic equation for a diatomic gas (nitrogen) is used to study two-dimensional unsteady gas flows in a plane microchannel caused by discontinuous in the initial distributions of macroscopic gas parameters. The plane discontinuity fronts are perpendicular to the walls of the channel. The arising flows are model ones for gas flows in a shock tube and a microchannel. The reflection of an incident shock wave from a flat end face is studied. It is found that the gas piles up at the cold wall, which slows down the shock wave detachment. The numerical results are in qualitative agreement with experimental data.

Abstract: We have set a task to develop a system of self-consistent models in the article. The first and the second models let us describe the liquid density and the gas density on the saturation line; the third one is connected with the saturation pressure. To build these models, we have used a methodical approach based on the Clapeyron-Clausius equation. The approach also includes some requirements of the scaling theory of critical phenomena. To calculate the adjustable coefficients of these models, experimental data on the liquid density, the gas density and the saturated pressure of SF6 have been selected. The new system let us describe the named properties in a wide interval of temperature. A comparative study has been made for these calculated properties as well as for the mean diameter of the coexistence curve. Numerical results of the study are discussed.

Abstract: A model kinetic equation approximating the Boltzmann equation on a wide range of the intensities of nonequilibrium states of gases is derived to describe rarefied gas flows. The kinetic model is based on a distribution function dependent on the absolute velocity of gas particles. Themodel kinetic equation possesses a high computational efficiency and the problem of shock wave structure is solved on its basis. The calculated and experimental data for argon are compared.

Abstract: Measurements of the fractional momentum loss $({S}_{\mathrm{loss}}\ensuremath{\equiv}\ensuremath{\delta}{p}_{T}/{p}_{T})$ of high-transverse-momentum-identified hadrons in heavy-ion collisions are presented. Using ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ in $\mathrm{Au}+\mathrm{Au}$ and $\mathrm{Cu}+\mathrm{Cu}$ collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{{}_{NN}}}=62.4$ and 200 GeV measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and and charged hadrons in $\mathrm{Pb}+\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions measured by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, we studied the scaling properties of ${S}_{\mathrm{loss}}$ as a function of a number of variables: the number of participants, ${N}_{\mathrm{part}}$, the number of quark participants, ${N}_{\mathrm{qp}}$, the charged-particle density, $d{N}_{\mathrm{ch}}/d\ensuremath{\eta}$, and the Bjorken energy density times the equilibration time, ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{\mathrm{Bj}}{\ensuremath{\tau}}_{0}$. We find that the ${p}_{T}$, where ${S}_{\mathrm{loss}}$ has its maximum, varies both with centrality and collision energy. Above the maximum, ${S}_{\mathrm{loss}}$ tends to follow a power-law function with all four scaling variables. The data at $\sqrt{{s}_{{}_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and 2.76 TeV, for sufficiently high particle densities, have a common scaling of ${S}_{\mathrm{loss}}$ with $d{N}_{\mathrm{ch}}/d\ensuremath{\eta}$ and ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{\mathrm{Bj}}{\ensuremath{\tau}}_{0}$, lending insight into the physics of parton energy loss.

Abstract: Measurements of midrapidity charged particle multiplicity distributions, $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$, and midrapidity transverse-energy distributions, $dE_T/d\eta$, are presented for a variety of collision systems and energies. Included are distributions for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$, 130, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 14.5, and 7.7 GeV, Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ and 62.4 GeV, Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193$ GeV, $d$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, and $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms of the number of nucleon participants, $N_{\rm part}$, and the number of constituent quark participants, $N_{q{\rm p}}$. For all $A$$+$$A$ collisions down to $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7$ GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with $N_{q{\rm p}}$ than scaling with $N_{\rm part}$. Also presented are estimates of the Bjorken energy density, $\varepsilon_{\rm BJ}$, and the ratio of $dE_T/d\eta$ to $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$, the latter of which is seen to be constant as a function of centrality for all systems.

Abstract: A model kinetic equation approximating the Boltzmann equation in a wide range of nonequilibrium gas states was constructed to describe rarefied gas flows. The kinetic model was based on a distribution function depending on the absolute velocity of the gas particles. Highly efficient in numerical computations, the model kinetic equation was used to compute a shock wave structure. The numerical results were compared with experimental data for argon.

Abstract: The results of investigations of dust grain behavior in plasma formed by a proton beam in inert gases (He, Ar, Kr) are demonstrated. Stable ordered dust structures, namely “a plasma-dust crystal” formed of dust grains 1.0, 3.0, and 4.8 μm in diameter are obtained in the proton beam range for the first time. The mathematical model which allows for numerical simulation of crystal formation from dust grains formed by proton beam plasma is developed.

Abstract: A system of model kinetic equations is proposed to describe flows of a diatomic rarefied gas (nitrogen). A conservative numerical method is developed for its solution. A shock wave structure in nitrogen is computed, and the results are compared with experimental data in a wide range of Mach numbers. The system of model kinetic equations is intended to compute complex-geometry three-dimensional flows of a diatomic gas with rotational degrees of freedom.

Abstract: A nuclear excited dusty plasma can be used effec� tively in systems of direct nuclear energy conversion, for example, into optical radiation energy. However, to compensate for gravity and to confine charged dust particles, a potential trap must be formed in a nuclear excited plasma. High pressures (1–100 atm) are needed to effectively use a nuclear excited plasma. Here, we investigate the possibility of using a corona electric discharge to provide the existence of dust structures before the action of hard radiation on a plasma–dust medium. The problem is considered in terms of continuum equations. We consider the case where a nuclear excited dusty plasma is in a cylinder of length L and radius R (L/R 1) with a wire of radius r 0 stretched through the center. The distributions of the number densities of electrons (ne), singly charged atomic (ni) and molecular (nmi) ions, excited atoms (n*), and metastable atoms (nam) and molecules (nMm) depend on the specific kinetics of elementary processes and the local electric field Er(r). Abstract: This paper deals with a fundamental equation of state (FEOS) for substances. We have suggested a new method. It allows constructing FEOS that is based on the scaling theory of critical phenomena and describes thermodynamic properties related to liquid and gas phases of a substance in a wide range of the pressures and temperatures. In the framework of the methodological approach, we have provided: (i) a transition of FEOS in a virial equation of state in the low density region; (ii) a transition of FEOS in a Widom equation of state in the critical region. The method has been tested on the example of FEOS of R218. The area of applicability of FEOS is 0 < ρ/ρ c < 3.2 in the density and 133 < T < 440 K in the temperature. We have compared FEOS with some equations of state and discussed the results.

Abstract: The highly ordered levitating structures of radioactive dusty particles in nuclear excited plasma oftube capacitor are studied using the Brownian dynamics. Models with potential and non potential forces acting on charged dusty particles have been investigated. Types and stability of obtained dust particle structures are analyzed at atmospheric pressure and normal conditions. The stationary crystal – like structures have been obtained only for potential forces acting on dusty particles, while in model with non potential forces the formation of two slowly rotating in opposite direction highly ordered vortices has been predicted (© 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract: We present the first measurement of photoproduction of J/psi and of two-photon production of high-mass e(+)e(-) pairs in electromagnetic (or ultra-peripheral) nucleus-nucleus interactions, using Au + Au data at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The events are tagged with forward neutrons emitted following Coulomb excitation of one or both Au* nuclei. The event sample consists of 28 events with m(e+e-) > 2 GeV/c(2) with zero like-sign background. The measured cross sections at midrapidity of d sigma/dy (J/psi + Xn, y = 0) = 76 +/- 33 (stat) +/- 11 (syst) pb and d(2)sigma /dm dy (e(+) e(-) + Xn, y = 0) = 86 +/- 23(stat) +/- 16(syst) mu b/ (GeV/c(2)) for m(e+e-) epsilon vertical bar 2.0, 2.8 vertical bar GeV/c(2) have been compared and found to be consistent with models for photoproduction of J/psi and QED based calculations of two-photon production of e(+)e(-) pairs. Abstract: The time-dependent one-dimensional problem of the normal reflection of a shock wave propagating at constant velocity in a gas (vapor) at rest from the plane surface of its condensed phase under steady-state condensation-evaporation conditions on the interphase plane is considered within the framework of the kinetic equation for a monatomic gas with a model collision operator (S-model). The solution is obtained using a conservative second-order finite-difference method. Attention is concentrated on the steady-state regime of the condensation process. The effect of the condensation (evaporation) coefficient on the velocity of the reflected shock wave is studied.

Abstract: PHENIX has measured the electron-positron pair mass spectrum from 0 to 8 GeV/c(2) in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV. The contributions from light meson decays to e(+)e(-) pairs have been determined based on measurements of hadron production cross sections by PHENIX. Within the systematic uncertainty of similar to 20% they account for all e(+)e(-) pairs in the mass region below similar to 1 GeV/c(2). The e(+)e(-) pair yield remaining after subtracting these contributions is dominated by semileptonic decays of charmed hadrons correlated through flavor conservation. Using the spectral shape predicted by PYTHIA, we estimate the charm production cross section to be 544 +/- 39(stat) +/- 142(syst) +/- 200(model) pb. which is consistent with QCD calculations and measurements of single leptons by PHENIX. Abstract: Slow low-Knudsen-number monatomic-gas flow past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated on the basis of a model kinetic equation. The gas flow is described by a new kinetic equation, from which the continuum equations for slow nonisothermal gas flows containing temperature stresses follow rigorously. It is shown that a closed convective-flow region arises near a nonuniformly heated cylinder in a slow gas flow if the flow impinges on the hot side of its surface. Using a new model of the Boltzmann equation makes it possible to study gas flows both in continuum and rarefied flow regimes.

Abstract: The structure of a normal (direct) shock in a gas for the parameters corresponding to nitrogen is investigated with allowance for the rotational degrees of freedom on the basis of a model kinetic equation. For various Mach numbers the structure is compared with both the known experimental results and the solutions of the Navier-Stokes approximation within the framework of two-temperature hydrodynamics. The possibility of assuming the constancy of the fraction of excited rotational degrees of freedom is studied.

Abstract: Correlations between p and (p) over bar at transverse momenta typical of enhanced baryon production in Au + Au collisions are reported. The PHENIX experiment has measured same and opposite sign baryon pairs in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. Correlated production of p and p with the trigger particle from the range 2.5 < p(T) < 4.0 GeV/c and the associated particle with 1.8 < p(T) < 2.5 GeV/c is observed to be nearly independent of the centrality of the collisions. Same sign pairs show no correlation at any centrality. The conditional yield of mesons triggered by baryons (and anti-baryons) and mesons in the same p(T) range rises with increasing centrality, except for the most central collisions, where baryons show a significantly smaller number of associated mesons. These data are consistent with a picture in which hard scattered partons produce correlated p and (p) over bar in the p(T) region of the baryon excess. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We present the first measurement of elliptic ($v_2$) and triangular ($v_3$) flow in high-multiplicity $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Two-particle correlations, where the particles have a large separation in pseudorapidity, are compared in $^{3}$He$+$Au and in $p$$+$$p$ collisions and indicate that collective effects dominate the second and third Fourier components for the correlations observed in the $^{3}$He$+$Au system. The collective behavior is quantified in terms of elliptic $v_2$ and triangular $v_3$ anisotropy coefficients measured with respect to their corresponding event planes. The $v_2$ values are comparable to those previously measured in $d$$+$Au collisions at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy. Comparison with various theoretical predictions are made, including to models where the hot spots created by the impact of the three $^{3}$He nucleons on the Au nucleus expand hydrodynamically to generate the triangular flow. The agreement of these models with data may indicate the formation of low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma even in these small collision systems.

Abstract: We have studied the dependence of azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$ for inclusive and identified charged hadrons in Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions on collision energy, species, and centrality. The values of $v_2$ as a function of transverse momentum $p_T$ and centrality in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200~GeV and 62.4~GeV are the same within uncertainties. However, in Cu$+$Cu collisions we observe a decrease in $v_2$ values as the collision energy is reduced from 200 to 62.4~GeV. The decrease is larger in the more peripheral collisions. By examining both Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions we find that $v_2$ depends both on eccentricity and the number of participants, $N_{\rm part}$. We observe that $v_2$ divided by eccentricity ($\varepsilon$) monotonically increases with $N_{\rm part}$ and scales as ${N_{\rm part}^{1/3}}$. The Cu$+$Cu data at 62.4 GeV falls below the other scaled $v_{2}$ data. For identified hadrons, $v_2$ divided by the number of constituent quarks $n_q$ is independent of hadron species as a function of transverse kinetic energy $KE_T=m_T-m$ between $0.1

Abstract: The standard model (SM) of particle physics is spectacularly successful, yet the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment (g−2)μ deviates from SM calculations by 3.6σ. Several theoretical models attribute this to the existence of a “dark photon,” an additional U(1) gauge boson, which is weakly coupled to ordinary photons. The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has searched for a dark photon, U, in π0,η→γe+e− decays and obtained upper limits of O(2×10−6) on U−γ mixing at 90% C.L. for the mass range 30

Abstract: Measurements of bottomonium production in heavy-ion and p + p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are presented. The inclusive yield of the three states, (1S + 2S + 3S), was measured in the PHENIX experiment via electron-positron decay pairs at midrapidity for Au + Au and p + p collisions at root sNN = 200 GeV. The (1S + 2S + 3S) -> e(+)e(-) differential cross section at midrapidity was found to be B(ee)d sigma/dy = 108 +/- 38 (stat) +/- 15 (syst) +/- 11 (luminosity) pb in p + p collisions. The nuclear modification factor in the 30% most central Au + Au collisions indicates a suppression of the total. state yield relative to the extrapolation from p + p collision data. The suppression is consistent with measurements made by STAR at RHIC and at higher energies by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.

Abstract: Results are presented from experimental studies of the behavior of dust grains in a track plasma produced by an accelerated proton beam. Dynamic dust structures in such a plasma are obtained for the first time, and their spatiotemporal evolution is thoroughly investigated. The structures develop from a dust spiral, which abruptly transforms with increasing dust density into a differentially rotating dust cloud across which dust-sound waves (including spiral waves generated by the dense central core) propagate. As time elapses, the dust cloud loses its fragments and gradually vanishes. At constant experimental conditions, the lifetime of the structures attains a few minutes.

Abstract: First observations of the dust grain crystal formation in the plasma generated by the slowing-down proton beam have been described. The crystal being formed has a simple cubical lattice with the mean distances between particles for different gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) from 90 to 140 μm. For a calculation of parameters of plasma the model of kinetic processes was developed. Results of our simulation showed that the anisotropic dust particles interaction can be the main physical reason of the appearance of the crystal like structure.

Abstract: Results are presented from experimental and theoretical investigations of the behavior of dust grains in a track plasma produced by a beam of accelerated protons. The dynamic ordered dust structures in a proton-beam-produced plasma are obtained for the first time. The processes leading to the formation of such structures are simulated numerically. The experimentally obtained dynamic vortex dust structures in a track plasma of a proton beam are explained theoretically, and the theoretical model developed to describe such a plasma is verified experimentally. Numerical investigations carried out by the method of Brownian dynamics made it possible to qualitatively explain the characteristic features of the formation of vortex dust structures.

Abstract: A new single-sided silicon strip detector has been developed for the silicon vertex tracker of the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The novel "stripixel" detector concept developed by the BNL Instrumentation Division was applied to the first prototype silicon sensor. The novel feature of the stripixel concept is two-dimensional (2-D) position sensitivity with single-sided processing achieved by charge sharing between two interleaved electrodes in one pixel. Signals are read out projectively by double layers of aluminum strips. The first prototype stripixel sensors with the size of 34.3 /spl times/ 64.6 mm and thickness of 250 and 400 /spl mu/m were fabricated. The detector with readout electronics was constructed to evaluate the prototype sensor performance by using an analog multiplexer chip with charge sensitive preamplifier-shaper circuits (VA2 chip of IDEAS). The sensor performance on charge sharing, detection efficiency, signal-to-noise ratio, and position resolution has been tested with a radioactive source and a GeV particle beam at KEK-PS. The stripixel detector concept, the specification of the first prototype stripixel sensor, and the test results are presented.

Abstract: Novel detector type, named “Stripixel” detector developed at BNL, has been applied in the development of a prototype Si strip detector for the PHENIX Upgrade at RHIC. This novel detector type can generate X–Y two-dimensional position sensitivity with single-sided processing and readout. The prototype Si stripixel detector has an active area of about 3 cm×6 cm, which is divided into two identical halves. Both X and Y pitches are 80 μm, with a stereo angle of 4.6°. There are 384 X strips and 384 Y strips on each half of the detector. The first batch of prototype Si stripixel detectors has been produced at BNL. The initial tests of detector electrical properties have yielded good results. Charge collection tests on test-structure strip detectors have shown both X and Y position sensitivities to laser light. Beam tests on the Si strip detectors have been done at RIKEN in November 2002.

Abstract: An overview of the strangeness measurements made by the STAR collaboration at RHIC for Au-Au collisions at √s NN = 130 and 200 GeV plus p-p collisions at √s NN = 200 GeV is presented. A wealth of information has been generated on the kinematics and scale of strange particle production by this experiment. When viewed in combination a picture emerges of particles demonstrating a surprisingly high degree of collective motion, suggestive of strong internal pressure within the source which builds up rapidly. The non-resonance yields are consistent with statistical hadron formation. Although there appears to be a rapid decoupling of the source, resonance particle measurements show signs of rescattering during the hadronic phase. Meanwhile the observed suppression of high momentum probes and their large azimuthal asymmetry indicate that this hot dense matter has significant interactions with particles moving through it.

Abstract: Values of the ratios in the mid-rapidity yields of Λ / Λ =0.71±0.01( stat. )±0.04( sys. ) , Ξ + / Ξ − =0.83±0.04( stat. )±0.05( sys. ) , Ω + / Ω − =0.95±0.15( stat. )±0.05( sys. ) and K + /K − =1.092±0.023(combined) were obtained in central s NN =130 GeV Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector. The ratios indicate that a fraction of the net-baryon number from the initial system is present in the excess of hyperons over antihyperons at mid-rapidity. The trend in the progression of the baryon ratios, with increasing strange quark content, is similar to that observed in heavy-ion collisions at lower energies. The value of these ratios may be related to the charged kaon ratio in the framework of simple quark-counting and thermal models.

Abstract: The STAR detector has made a variety of measurements of strange and other hadronic species in Au+Au collisions at s N N = 130 GeV. A comparison of kaon and pion production enables an examination of the systematics of strangeness production with energy by comparing them to lower energy collisions. Anti-baryon to baryon ratios indicate a much reduced net-baryon density and transverse momentum spectra show that a picture of transverse expansion seems appropriate.

Abstract: The current status of the STAR Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) is presented. The performance of the Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) is discussed. Results for a recent 15 layer SDD tracker which prototypes all components of the SVT are presented. The enhanced physics capabilities of the STAR detector due to the addition of the SVT are addressed.

Abstract: The design and parameters of the polarized-beam facility at U-70 proton synchrotron of IHEP, Protvino, are presented. The polarized proton and antiproton beam line 24A is currently under development at IHEP. It will serve as a main playground for carrying out the rich program of the SPASCHARM experiment for comprehensive studies of spin phenomena in a wide variety of hadronic reactions in the beam energy range of ~10–45 GeV.
