Abstract

The reduced transition probabilities for the 4-> and 2->0 transitions in 92Mo and 94Ru and for the 4->2 and 6->4 transitions in 90Zr have been determined in this experiment making use of a multinucleon transfer reaction. These results have been interpreted on the basis of realistic shell-model calculations in the f5/2, p3/2, p1/2, and g9/2 proton valence space. Only the combination of extensive lifetime information and large scale shell-model calculations allowed the extent of the seniority conservation in the N=50 g9/2 orbital to be understood. The conclusion is that seniority is largely conserved in the first πg9/2 orbital.

Abstract

The Large Hadron-Electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy-recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operations. This report represents an update to the LHeC's conceptual design report (CDR), published in 2012. It comprises new results on the parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, and electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics by extending the accessible kinematic range of lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to its enhanced luminosity and large energy and the cleanliness of the final hadronic states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, this report contains a detailed updated design for the energy-recovery electron linac (ERL), including a new lattice, magnet and superconducting radio-frequency technology, and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described, and the lower-energy, high-current, three-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented, which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution, and calibration goals that arise from the Higgs and parton-density-function physics programmes. Abstract

Precise spectroscopic information on the fast neutron induced fission of the 238U(n,f) reaction was recently gained using a new technique which involved coupling of the Miniball high resolution y-ray spectrometer and the LICORNE directional neutron source. The experiment allowed measurement of the isotopic fission yields for around 40 even-even nuclei at an incident neutron energy of around 2 MeV where yield data are very sparse. In addition spectroscopic information on very neutron-rich fission products was obtained. Results were compared to models, both the JEFF-3.1.1 data base and the GEF code, and large discrepancies for the S1 fission mode in the Sn/Mo isotope pair were discovered. This suggests that current models are overestimating the role played by spherical shell effects in fast neutron induced fission. In late 2017 and 2018 the nu-ball hybrid spectrometer will be constructed at the IPN Orsay to perform further experimental investigations with directional neutrons coupled to a powerful hybrid Ge/LaBr3 detector array. This will open up new possibilities for measurements of fission yields for fast-neutron-induced fission using the spectroscopic technique and will be complimentary to other methods being developed.

Abstract

The LICORNE neutron source is a new device at the ALTO facility. Its use of inverse kinematics makes the production of naturally focused neutron beams possible with an energy range of 0.5 to 4 MeV. This is perfect for any studies concerning fast neutron induced reaction based on detection setup that require to be placed in a compact geometry – such as Ge based γ detection setup. In this paper, neutron production with LICORNE is described. The development of a gascell target and the extension of the energy range up to 7 MeV with the p(11B,n)11C are presented. An overview of the major research fields studied with LICORNE is given and two types of experiment are presented. The first one dedicated to prompt fission γ-ray emission in fission, as a function of incident neutron energy, is described. Some preliminary results are shown. The second, in the context of the MINORCA campaign, is detailed. The most recent outcomes in the data analysis process are also presented.

Abstract

Using the On-Line Nuclear Orientation method, POLAREX (POLARization of EXotic nuclei) is a new facility allowing to study the anisotropic decay of spin-oriented nuclei. Based on the combination of on-line implantation of radioactive nuclei with Low Temperature Nuclear Orientation technique and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, POLAREX allows to measure nuclear electromagnetic moments and ground-state spins, in the aim to get information about the wave function composition of the nuclear state. Polarized nuclei can also be used to study fundamental interactions involving nuclear β-decay asymmetries. The POLAREX infrastructure will be installed at Accélérateur Linéaire auprés du Tandem d’Orsay in order to study neutron-rich nuclei, some of which have not been studied yet. Will be presented here, all the possibilities of this new facility and a non exhaustive scientific program.

Abstract

LICORNE is a new neutron source recently installed at the tandem accelerator of the Institut de Physique Nucléaire d'Orsay, where a Li7-beam is used to bombard a hydrogen-containing target to produce an intense forward-directed neutron beam. The directionality of the beam, which is the unique characteristic of LICORNE, will permit the installation of γ-ray detectors dedicated to the investigation of fission fragment de-excitation which are unimpeded by neutrons from the source. A first experimental program will focus on the measurement of prompt γ-ray emission in the neutron-induced fission of fertile and fissile isotopes at incident neutron energies relevant for the core design of Generation-IV nuclear reactors. Other potential uses of the LICORNE facility for both fundamental and applied physics research are also presented.

Abstract

Transition probabilities of intermediate-spin yrast and non-yrast excitations in 80, 82Se were investigated in a recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) experiment performed at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The Cologne Plunger device for deep inelastic scattering was used for the RDDS technique and was combined with the AGATA Demonstrator array for the γ-ray detection and coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. In 80Se, the level lifetimes of the yrast (6+1) and (8+1) states and of a non-yrast band feeding the yrast 4+1 state are determined. A spin and parity assignment of the head of this sideband is discussed based on the experimental results and supported by large-scale shell-model calculations. In 82Se, the level lifetimes of the yrast 6+1 state and the yrare 4+2 state and lifetime limits of the yrast (10+1) state and of the 5−1 state are determined. Although the experimental results contain large uncertainties, they are interpreted with care in terms of large-scale shell-model calculations using the effective interactions JUN45 and jj44b. The excited states' wave functions are investigated and discussed with respect to the role of the neutron g9/2 orbital.

Abstract

An island of isomers have recently been observed on both sides of the N=40 shell below the Ni isotopes. Isomeric states in the $^{65}$Fe and $^{67}$Fe allow the knowledge of the single particle structure around the $\nu$g_9/2$ shell. Moreover, the excitation energy of the first $2^+$ and $4^+$ states in the $^{68}$Fe have been established by $\beta$-$\gamma$ correlation. The evolution of the structure of the Fe isotopes going far away from the valley of stability is, for the first time, given for N>40

Abstract

Multi-nucleon transfer reactions are useful tools to populate exotic nuclei, particularly the neutron-rich ones. In this view, two different experiments have been performed employing a stable (22Ne) and a radioactive (24Ne) beam, both impinging on a 208Pb target. The first reaction has been studied using the CLARA-PRISMA-DANTE set-up at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (Legnaro-Italy), while the second reaction was performed at Ganil (Caen-France) employing a SPIRAL radioactive beam of 24Ne. In this case recoils and coincident γ rays were detected with the VAMOS-EXOGAM set-up. The data show that MNT reactions can selectively populate states of different nature and, therefore, are a good tool to study nuclear structure further away from stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; The features of fission fragments formed in the near barrier reaction $^{32}\hbox {S}$ + $^{197}\hbox {Au}$ ($E^\mathrm{lab}_\mathrm{beam}=166\,\hbox {MeV}$) are investigated. The measurement was performed at the ALTO facility of IPN Orsay, France, with the aim of clarifying the quantitative contribution of the quasi-fission process to the total fission events. The mass and total kinetic energy of the fission fragments were compared to the expectations of the liquid drop model, revealing an asymmetric fission component which may be traced back to a quasi-fission process mixed with the fusion–fission events. The $\gamma $-rays and neutrons measured in coincidence with the fission fragments were used to yield additional information for the discrimination of the two aforementioned mechanisms. All observed trends are consistent and fairly well reproduced by the statistical model.

Abstract

The current status of fission dynamics studies in heavy-ion collisions around the Coulomb barrier is illustrated with the 34S + 186W reaction. The fission-fragment mass and total kinetic energy were measured at the ALTO facility at IPN Orsay, France, with a dedicated set-up using the (v, E) approach. The measurement reveals the presence of an asymmetric fission component on top of a predominantly symmetric distribution. The asymmetric structure, pointed out for the first time, is discussed along with results of previous experiments studying the same reaction. While these analyses suggested the contribution from either quasi-fission or pre-equilibrium fission, we offer an alternative interpretation, in terms of shell-driven compound-nucleus fission. The present measurement demonstrates the critical influence of resolution when addressing puzzling cases, situated at the crossroads of the various channels opened in a heavy-ion collision. Current status in the field clearly calls for innovative measurements involving manifold correlations and new observables. The outcome of the attempt done in this work in this direction, based on the coincident measurement of prompt \( \gamma\)-rays is reported, and encouraging perspectives are discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The reaction 34S + 186W at Elab=160 MeV was investigated with the aim of diving into the features of thefusion-fission process. Gamma rays in coincidence with binary reaction fragments were measured using the high efficiencygamma-ray spectrometer ORGAM at the TANDEM Accelerator facility of I.P.N., Orsay, and the time-of-flight spectrometerfor fission fragments (FF) registration CORSET of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (FLNR), Dubna. The couplingof the ORGAM and CORSET setups offers the unique opportunity of extracting details for characterizing the fusion-fissionprocess and gives information regarding production of neutron-rich heavy nuclei. The FF-$\gamma$ coincidence method is of betteruse then the $\gamma$ - $\gamma$ coincidence method when dealing with low statistic measurements and also offers the opportunity toprecisely correct the Dopler shift for in-flight emitted gamma rays.Evidence of symmetric and asymmetric fission modes were observed in the mass and TKE distributions, occurring due toshell effects in the fragments. Coincident measurements allow for discrimination between the gamma rays by accepting aspecific range within the mass distribution of the reaction products. Details regarding the experimental setup, methods ofprocessing the acquisitioned data and preliminary results are presented.
