We discuss linear and nonlinear topological edge states on the bearded-bearded edge (BBE) and armchair-armchair edge (AAE) of two helical waveguide arrays with opposite helicity. The robustness of the linear topological edge state can be controlled by the helix radius, the angle of the incidence, and the amplitude of lattice potentials. In the nonlinear regime, multipole-like lattice quasisolitons may be found with a certain saturable nonlinear factor for AAE. The long-distance propagation dynamics of such quasisolitons are numerically studied from the evolution of their intensity patterns and the “center of mass”. On the contrary, no quasisoltion exists for BBE under the same conditions.

There is an obvious aerodynamic interference problem that occurs for a quad tilt rotor in near-ground hovering or in the conversion operating condition. This paper presents an aerodynamic interference test of the quad tilt rotor in a wind tunnel. A 1:35 scale model of the quad tilt rotor is used in this test. To substitute for the ground, a moveable platform is designed in a low-speed open-loop wind tunnel to simulate different flight altitudes of the quad tilt rotor in hovering or forward flight. A rod six-component force balance is used to measure the loads on the aircraft, and the flow field below the airframe is captured using particle image velocimetry. The experimental results show that the ground effect is significant when the hover height above the ground is less than the rotor diameter of the quad tilt rotor aircraft, and the maximum upload of the airframe is approximately 12% of the total vertical thrust with the appearance of obvious fountain flow. During the conversion operating condition, the upload of the airframe is reduced compared with that in the hovering state, which is affected by rotor wake and incoming flow. The aerodynamic interference test results of the quad tilt rotor aircraft have important reference value in power system selection, control system design, and carrying capacity improvement with the advantage of ground effect.

We investigate the existence and stability of nonlocal surface solitons at the interface between linear media and nonlocal nonlinear media with two-dimensional (2D) parity-time ( PT )-symmetric optical lattices. We analytically obtain the nonlinearity-induced change of the refractive index by introducing a reasonable step function with the method of Fourier transform, and carry out the linear stability analysis for the surface solitons based on the response function of the infinite nonlocal medium. Numerical results show that nonlocal PT surface solitons can exist and be stable in 2D PT -symmetric optical lattices.

We numerically investigate the existence and stability of nonlocal vector solitons with pseudo spin-orbit-coupling (SOC). The pseudo SOC is realized by a framework based on the spatial-domain copropagation of two beams with mutually orthogonal polarizations and opposite transverse components of the carrier wave vectors in nonlocal optical media. The numerical results show that there are two kinds of solutions for vector solitons, one is central symmetric, and the other is noncentral symmetric. The solitons may exist below a certain threshold value of the effective SOC strength in the system.

A method for the generation of tunable multi-degree-of-freedom rotations of vector beams on demand along a propagation direction is theoretically proposed. This generation can be achieved by a suitable vector superposition of three monochromatic non-coplanar beams, including a plane wave with elliptical polarization and two Bessel–Hermite–Gauss (BHG) beams with orthogonal polarization, the parameters of which were systematically chosen to obtain the different longitudinal characteristics of the field, i.e., the state of polarization (SoP), phase, and intensity. On one hand, both the incidence angles of the two BHG beams and the additional phase of the plane wave affect the rotation of the beam intensity and phase, but the incidence angle does not affect the rotation of the SoP. Moreover, the additional phase can lead to a change of the rotation angle of the SoP. On the other hand, the weight coefficients of the two BHG beams periodically change the beam intensity distribution along the propagation direction. Interestingly, the beam is non-diffracting, which means that energy is only exchanged internally and is conserved as a whole. This approach may find applications in dynamic multi-beam optical tweezers, atom guiding, materials processing, microscopy, and optical communications.

In this paper the configurations of shock wave-boundary layer interactions (SWBLI) are studied theoretically and experimentally in Mach number 2 and 2.5 flows on test models with various wedge angles ranging from to. The proposed theoretical method couples the free interaction theory (FIT) with the minimum entropy production (MEP) principle to predict the appearance of separation shock, resulting in convex, straight and concave separation shock waves according to different solution combinations, which agree well with current experiments. Additionally, several influences on SWBLI are studied experimentally, in which the parameters related to theoretical solutions are found mostly determining the flow configuration, and SWBLI is much more sensitive to incident shock strength than incoming flow properties. Separation could be suppressed by incident shock when the MEP solution is smaller than the FIT, while it could be intensified when the MEP solution is larger than FIT; by contrast, the effects of separation position and model mounting height could be very weak.

We design a framework based on the spatial-domain copropagation of two light beams with mutually orthogonal polarizations and opposite transverse components of carrier wave vectors in a nonlinear waveguide with randomly varying birefringence, the averaging with respect to which introduces an effective Manakov nonlinearity in the system. The corresponding two-component system of nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations is derived, being similar to the system of coupled one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equations for a binary spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate. The system may also include an effective Rabi coupling (direct linear mixing of the components) and a periodic potential, representing a photonic-crystal structure in the underlying waveguide. For self-focusing and self-defocusing signs of nonlinearity, soliton solutions of several symmetry types are obtained by means of numerical methods, and their stability is investigated, including gap solitons in the case when the periodic potential is present.

This paper presents the design of microwave bandpass filters with frequency-dependent (FDC) coupling for power wireless private network communication. The filters are composed of four resonators arranged in the in-line and folded topology using substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology. The frequency-dependent coupling is implemented bya magnetic coupling iris and a balanced microstrip line with a pair of metallized via-holes, which produces an extra zero in comparison to classical approaches. To verify the characteristics of the proposed FDC, an in-line fourth-order substrate integrated waveguide bandpassfilter (BPF) with one transmission zero and a folded configuration BPF with one small negative slope for independently controlled transmission zero are designed.

Soliton complexes provide an effective way to study the interaction of solitons and the dynamics of nonlinear systems. Based on the realization of pseudo-Zeeman lattice in optics, the soliton components of the soliton complexes have different potential fields, and thus have different propagation characteristics. The interaction of the soliton components makes the soliton complexes exhibit novel and unique propagation characteristics, that is, passing through the lattice without reflection and the weak light controlling the strong light through the attraction between the components of the soliton complexes.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can extract energy to improve their range and endurance due to thermal updrafts in the environment via static soaring. In this paper, a soaring control strategy is improved based on multi-hole probe technology. A vertical wind speed estimation method based on the multi-hole probe is proposed to design thermal updraft identification, mode switching logic, and the soaring controller. Turn logic is used to determine the correct turn direction for UAVs when a thermal updraft is detected. A simulation environment containing a six-degree-of-freedom glider model and a thermal updraft model is described. The induced roll effect caused by the asymmetric vertical velocity distribution of thermal updraft is included in the simulations. The results show an improved soaring capability from the proposed soaring strategy. Thus, the proposed method based on a multi-hole probe is more accurate and robust, and the turn logic allows a glider to enter a thermal updraft more quickly. The more energy a glider can obtain from thermal updraft enables a lower soaring speed during static soaring.

We investigate numerically the propagation of an Airy-Gaussian vortex (AiGV) beam in the defected photonic lattices. The propagation properties of the AiGV beam are affected by positive and negative defects. Interestingly, we find that the intensity distribution of the AiGV beam focuses on the position of the defect and then forms a lattice soliton for the positive defect. On the contrary, the AiGV beam is diffused for the negative defect. The higher value the defected depth is, the more energy can be constrained by the positive defect and the shorter transmission distance for the beam forming a lattice soliton is. And the effect of nonlinear is smaller than the effect of defects. Moreover, by changing the effects of nonlinearity, the lattice modulation depth, the defect depth and the distribution factor, we can control the propagation distance for the AiGV beam focusing for the positive defect.

We investigate the “inverted” solitons in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate with one-dimensional spatially periodic Zeeman field. Soliton existence depends on the exact invert for the condensate components in the spatially periodic Zeeman field. And the position and the total pseudomagnetization density of the solitons can be controlled by the spatially periodic Zeeman field. Simulated results show that the inverted solitons can be stable for the interatomic attractive interactions.

We report on the existence and stability of fundamental and out-of-phase dipole gap solitons in parity-time (PT)-symmetric mixed linear-nonlinear optical lattices with a fourth-order diffraction. These solitons exist in the semi-infinite gap. For fundamental gap solitons, they can bifurcate from the higher edge of the first Bloch band, solitons are stable in the low power region. For dipole gap solitons, they cannot bifurcate from the higher edge of the first Bloch band, they can stably exist in the moderate power region. The coupling constant of the fourth-order diffraction can influence the stability of these gap solitons.

A cruciform-finned slender body can excite a limit-cycle rolling oscillation at high angles of attack. To suppress the unwanted motions, flow control approaches should be employed if the aerodynamic control surfaces lose control efficiency at high angles of attack. As a promising technology, the ns-dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator has been successfully used in high-speed and high-Reynolds-number flow control applications. The present work employs a π-type ns-dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator and vortex generators to suppress self-excited rolling oscillation at α = 50°. The free-to-roll tests show that the plasma actuator ignited at F+ ∼ 1.5 and that the vortex generators can suppress rolling oscillation. The flow patterns from particle image velocimetry measurement at different cross-sections and rolling angles suggest that the vorticity decrease of the leeward vortices may be the control mechanism for the plasma actuator. For the vortex generators, evident modification of the flow field structure can be observed due to the vortices generated from the vortex generators, which decreases the rolling moment induced by the asymmetry vortices to suppress the self-excited rolling oscillation.

We report on the properties of fundamental defect matter-wave gap solitons in spin–orbit-coupled Bose–Einstein condensates in one-dimensional Zeeman lattices with attractive nonlinearity. One component of these solitons is a real even function, and the other is an imaginary odd function. When the defect is repulsive, these solitons can be stable in the semi-infinite, first, and second gaps. Increasing the strength of spin–orbit coupling, stable defect gap-stripe solitons in the semi-infinite and first gaps are found. However, for an attractive defect, the solitons only stably exist in the semi-infinite gap and cannot be close to the lower edge of the first Bloch band.

We investigate the nonlocal gray solitons in parity-time (PT)-symmetric potentials with spatially modulated nonlinearity. If the nonlinear modulated function (nonlinear potential) is real, the coefficient of the function can control the grayness and the existence domain of these gray solitons. Especially, if the coefficient of the nonlinear modulated function is below a threshold, the gray solitons will be changed into anti-dark solitons. The effects of the degree of the nonlocality and the imaginary part of the PT-symmetric potentials on the grayness and the existence of the gray solitons are also discussed. If the nonlinear modulated function is also PT symmetric, the imaginary part of the function will obviously affect the existence and stability of the nonlocal gray solitons.

Uncommanded self-induced roll oscillations cause significant challenges in flight control and are ubiquitous in high-attack-angle flights in the flying-wing configuration. Spanwise blowing slots were designed in this article to suppress these roll oscillations with nonzero mean angles of a 53° swept flying-wing model. Three flow control strategies were proposed and studied successively. The open-loop symmetric blowing successfully suppressed oscillations below the nominal angle of attack of 24° before losing its effectiveness. Subsequently, adaptive continuous blowing using the proportion-integral-differential algorithm was performed with symmetric pre-blowing to eliminate the ineffective region with a small blowing coefficient. Using this strategy, roll oscillations under all tested nominal angles of attack were successfully addressed as the nonzero trim angles were eliminated and the oscillations were suppressed. However, the air consumption needed to maintain the model balance was too large, which necessitated the development of pulsed blowing. Static force measurements showed that the blowing-induced rolling moment had a linear relationship with the duty cycle of blowing. The results from the particle-image-velocimetry tests revealed that the mechanism of the linear relationship was the increased duration of coherent vortices over a period at longer duty cycles. Based on the static experimental results, the model was stabilized via proportion-integral-differential adaptive blowing, which utilized the duty cycle as the control variable. Compared to the second strategy, the last one reduced the required mean blowing momentum coefficient by two orders of magnitude while maintaining a great control effect.

We propose a design of a center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL) based on Fresnel lens. The Fresnel lens is divided into four layers. The first layer collimates the beam of Light Emitting Diode (LED) along the direction perpendicular to optical axis; The second layer makes the output light uniformly distributed; The third layer collimates the beam along the optical axis direction; The fourth layer scatters the collimating light to make the last light distribution meet the relevant regulations. The simulation and test results show that the efficient of this CHMSL is 38.3 % and the uniformity is about 92.4 %. This CHMSL is practical and can applicable to vehicle lighting.

We study the existence of discrete solitons in saturable nonlinearity media with parity-time symmetric lattices. We find that there exist two kinds of discrete solitons, they share the same parameters but different energy flows. The degree of saturable nonlinearity can influence the properties of such discrete solitons. Stable discrete solitons are found near the anti-continuum limit.

We investigate numerically the existence and stability of discrete multipole dark solitons in saturable nonlinearity media with parity-time ( $\mathcal{PT}$ ) symmetric lattices. The dipole and triple solitons share the same existence domain associated with the propagation constant, gain-loss coefficient and the degree of saturable nonlinearity. However, the solitons stably propagate in a different area of the aforementioned three parameters. The beam power monotonously increases with the increase of propagation constant and the saturable degree, but gently decreases with the gain-loss coefficient. Moreover, the power of the triple solitons is higher than that of dipole solitons under the same conditions.

We investigate numerically the interaction between two finite Airy-Gaussian (AiG) beams in different media with the defected photonic lattices in one transverse dimension. We discuss that the beams with different intensities and phases launch into the different lattice structures but accelerate in opposite directions. During interactions, the interference fringe, breathers, and soliton pairs are observed. In the linear media, the initial deflection direction of the accelerated beams is changed by adjusting the phase shift and the beam interval. For a certain lattice period, the periodic interference fringe can form. A constructive or destructive interference can vary with the defect depth and phase shift. While the nonlinearity is introduced, the breathers is generated. Especially in the self-defocusing media, the appropriate AiG beam amplitude and lattice depth may lead to the formation of soliton pairs, On the contrary, the interaction of two Gaussian beams is diffraction.

We investigate numerically that a finite Airy-Gaussian (AiG) beam varies its trajectory and shape in the defected photonic lattices. The propagation properties and beam self-bending are controlled with modulation depth and period of the photonic lattices, positive and negative defects, beam distribution factor and nonlinearity change. For positive defects, the pseudo-period oscillation and localization of the AiG beam may be formed under a certain condition, while the beam is diffused for negative defects. Moreover, the solitons may appear during the propagation process when the self-focusing nonlinearity is introduced., 15 pages, 8 figures

We embed a helical lattice into a portion of a bulk photorefractive medium to form a synthetic structure and numerically investigate the nonlinear transmission of a probe vortex beam in the structure. Numerical demonstrations confirm that the structure can stabilize multisoliton states in the form of nonrotating and nonexpanding necklacelike solitons. Lattice structure and the amplitude, width, and topological charge of the probe vortex beam can influence the structure of necklacelike solitons. Interestingly, an increase in beam intensity may lead to multiplication of the number of bright “spots.”

Sideslip-induced asymmetrical vortices are critical to the performance of canard-configuration aircraft. In this paper, a canard-configuration model was found to roll around a nonzero trim angle in a free-to-roll experiment, indicating a loss of lateral static stability. This loss was also evidenced by the positive slope of the rolling-moment versus sideslip curve. To reveal the underlying mechanism of this phenomenon, we focused on sideslip effects, taking surface-pressure measurements and conducting PIV (particle image velocimetry) tests. At the attack angle of 16°, sideslip causes inward extension of the windward low-pressure area on the main wings, which leads to a decrease in rolling moment. The inferred cause is the inward movement of the windward reattachment point. At the attack angle of 35°, complex multi-vortex structures were analyzed using PIV for three forms of the model: with all components; without canard; with neither canard nor strake. The effects of sideslip on vortex flow at high attack angle were then studied. As sideslip angle changed from -1° to 1°, sideslip promotes the breakdown of windward vortices, causing a sharp decrease in windward suction. Subsequently, as sideslip angle changed from 1° to 4°, the backward movement of the breakdown point and an increase in strength of vortices are observed on the leeward side, which coincides with an increase in both leeward suction and the rolling moment. As the sideslip angle continues to increase, the inboard vortex on the leeward side rises and becomes weak, which leads to a decrease in leeward suction, and hence, the recovery of lateral static stability. Moreover, the coiling of leeward vortices weakens under sideslip.Sideslip-induced asymmetrical vortices are critical to the performance of canard-configuration aircraft. We propose a method for generation of tunable three-dimensional (3D) helical lattices with varying helix pitch. In order to change only the lattice helix pitch, a periodically varying phase along the propagation direction is added to the central beam - one of the interference beams for lattice construction. The phase periodicity determines the helix pitch, which can be reconfigured at ease. Furthermore, a helical lattice structure with an interface (domain wall) is also achieved by changing the phase structure of the lateral beams, leading to opposite rotating direction (helicity) on different sides of the interface. When a Gaussian beam is used to probe the bulk lattice, it can evolve into a spiral beam with its helicity varying in accordance with that of the lattice. Probing along the interface with two dipole-like optical beams leads to unusual propagation dynamics, depending on the phase and size of the two beams. This approach could be further explored for studies of nonlinear interface solitons and topological interface states. In addition, the helical lattices may find applications in dynamical multi-beam optical tweezers.

We investigate Airy-soliton interactions in self-defocusing media with PT potentials in one transverse dimension. We discuss different potentials in which the interacting beams with different phases are launched into the media at different separation distances. During interactions, there exist a primary collision region and a relaxation region accompanied by continuous interaction with the dispersed Airy tail. In the relaxation region, the beams exist soliton-like and breathers-like propagation. The beam width and mean power are influenced by initial separation, phase shift and modulation depth of PT potentials. Especially, the collision distance decreases with the spatial beam separation and the mean power possesses sinusoidal dependence on the phase shift., 16 pages, 5 figures

We address multipole surface solitons occurring at the interface between a linear medium and a nonlocal nonlinear medium. We show the impact of nonlocality, the propagation constant, and the linear index difference of two media on the properties of the surface solitons. We find that there exist a threshold value of the degree of the nonlocality at the same linear index difference of two media, only when the degree of the nonlocality goes beyond the value, the multipole surface solitons can be stable.

We address two-dimensional surface solitons occurring at the interface between a semi-infinite linear medium and a semi-infinite nonlocal nonlinear medium. We find that there exist stable single and dipole surface solitons. The properties of the surface solitons can be affected by the degree of nonlocality. Interestingly, only when the degree of nonlocality is greater than a critical value, the surface solitons can exist.

We investigate numerically surface-wave solitons occurring at the interface between semi-infinite linear and thermal nonlinear optical media, with the refractive index of the linear medium being greater than that of the nonlinear medium (in the absence of light). We find that the threshold energy flows of the existence of the surface solitons depend on the linear refractive index difference of the two media. Their fitting empirical formula has been obtained. Furthermore, we elucidate that the optical beams propagating in thermal nonlinear optical media, either as a single surface soliton or as a dipole surface soliton, can be attracted to the surface, even when launched from far away.

Classical electromagnetic theory is applied to determine the eigenvalue equation and the fields of the allowed guided modes in a symmetric metal-clad planar uniaxial crystal waveguide for an arbitrary orientation of the optical axes. There are different hybrid guided modes in the different uniaxial crystals. For each mode, the conditions for their existence, the dispersion equation, and the accuracy of the solutions of the modal fields are analytically discussed. We report the propagation conditions and the asymmetry of various electric field distributions of the single modes.

We report on the nonlocal fundamental defect soliton in parity-time (PT)-symmetric superlattices with defocusing nonlinearity. For positive defect, soliton exist in the second gap, the first gap and the semi-infinite gap. They can be stable in the low power region in the first gap and semi-infinite gap. For negative defect, defect solitons only exist in the second gap, and can also be stable in the low power region. The degree of nonlocality can significantly affect the stability of these defect solitons. We also study the transverse power-flow of these defect solitons in the PT-symmetric superlattices.

We investigate the properties of gap solitons in spin–orbit-coupled Bose–Einstein condensates in mixed linear–nonlinear optical lattices. The mixed linear–nonlinear optical lattices can support parity-time (PT)-symmetric soliton solutions, and these PT-symmetric solitons can stably exist in the semi-infinite gap of linear optical lattices. The PT-symmetric gap-stripe solitons are found by increasing the strength of the spin–orbit coupling. It is found that the amplitude of the nonlinear optical lattices can significantly affect the stability of these gap and gap-stripe solitons. With an increase of the amplitude of the nonlinear optical lattices, the stable domains of the gap and gap-stripe solitons are shrunk. The unstable solitons can show unique evolution characteristics and the stability analyses are also confirmed by the evolution simulations.
