Subwavelength photonic structures and metamaterials provide revolutionary approaches for controlling light. The inverse design methods proposed for these subwavelength structures are vital to the development of new photonic devices. However, most of the existing inverse design methods cannot realize direct mapping from optical properties to photonic structures but instead rely on forward simulation methods to perform iterative optimization. In this work, we exploit the powerful generative abilities of artificial intelligence (AI) and propose a practical inverse design method based on latent diffusion models. Our method maps directly the optical properties to structures without the requirement of forward simulation and iterative optimization. Here, the given optical properties can work as "prompts" and guide the constructed model to correctly "draw" the required photonic structures. Experiments show that our direct mapping-based inverse design method can generate subwavelength photonic structures at high fidelity while following the given optical properties. This may change the method used for optical design and greatly accelerate the research on new photonic devices.

Combining resonant excitation with Purcell-enhanced single quantum dots (QDs) stands out as a prominent strategy for realizing high performance solid-state single photon sources. However, optimizing photon efficiency requires addressing challenges associated with effectively separating the excitation laser from QDs' emission. Traditionally, this involves polarization filtering, which limits the achievable polarization directions and the scalability of photonic states. In this study, we have successfully tackled this challenge by employing spatially-orthogonal resonant excitation of QDs, deterministically coupled to monolithic Fabry-Perot microcavities. Leveraging the membrane cavity structures, we have achieved filter-free single photon resonant fluorescence. The resulting source produces single photons with a simultaneous high extraction efficiency of 0.87, purity of 0.9045(4), and indistinguishability of 0.963(4)., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Cavity-enhanced single quantum dots (QDs) are the main approach towards ultra-high-performance solid-state quantum light sources for scalable photonic quantum technologies. Nevertheless, harnessing the Purcell effect requires precise spectral and spatial alignment of the QDs' emission with the cavity mode, which is challenging for most cavities. Here we have successfully integrated miniaturized Fabry-Perot microcavities with a piezoelectric actuator, and demonstrated a bright single photon source derived from a deterministically coupled QD within this microcavity. Leveraging the cavity-membrane structures, we have achieved large spectral-tunability via strain tuning. On resonance, we have obtained a high Purcell factor of approximately 9. The source delivers single photons with simultaneous high extraction efficiency of 0.58, high purity of 0.956(2) and high indistinguishability of 0.922(4). Together with a small footprint, our scheme facilitates the scalable integration of indistinguishable quantum light sources on-chip, and therefore removes a major barrier to the solid-state quantum information platforms based on QDs., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is enabled by local surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) in metallic nanogaps. When SERS is excited by direct illumination of the nanogap, the background heating of lattice and electrons can prevent further manipulation of the molecules. To overcome this issue, we report SERS in electromigrated gold molecular junctions excited remotely: surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are excited at nearby gratings, propagate to the junction, and couple to the local nanogap plasmon modes. Like direct excitation, remote excitation of the nanogap can generate both SERS emission and an open-circuit photovoltage (OCPV). We compare SERS intensity and OCPV in both direct and remote illumination configurations. SERS spectra obtained by remote excitation are much more stable than those obtained through direct excitation when photon count rates are comparable. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are representative models of artificial neural networks (ANNs), that form the backbone of modern computer vision. However, the considerable power consumption and limited computing speed of electrical computing platforms restrict further development of CNNs. Optical neural networks are considered the next-generation physical implementations of ANNs to break the bottleneck. This study proposes a spectral convolutional neural network (SCNN) with the function of matter meta-imaging, namely identifying the composition of matter and mapping its distribution in space. This SCNN includes an optical convolutional layer (OCL) and a reconfigurable electrical backend. The OCL is implemented by integrating very large-scale, pixel-aligned metasurfaces on a CMOS image sensor, which accepts 3D raw datacubes of natural images, containing two-spatial and one-spectral dimensions, at megapixels directly as input to realize the matter meta-imaging. This unique optoelectronic framework empowers in-sensor optical analog computing at extremely high energy efficiency eliminating the need for coherent light sources and greatly reducing the computing load of the electrical backend. We employed the SCNN framework on several real-world complex tasks. It achieved accuracies of 96.4% and 100% for pathological diagnosis and real-time face anti-spoofing at video rate, respectively. The SCNN framework, with an unprecedented new function of substance identification, provides a feasible optoelectronic and integrated optical CNN implementation for edge devices or cellphones with limited computing capabilities, facilitating diverse applications, such as intelligent robotics, industrial automation, medical diagnosis, and astronomy.

The manipulation of coupled quantum excitations is of fundamental importance in realizing novel photonic and optoelectronic devices. We use electroluminescence to probe plasmon-exciton coupling in hybrid structures consisting of a nanoscale plasmonic tunnel junction and few-layer two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenide transferred onto the junction. The resulting hybrid states act as a novel dielectric environment that affects the radiative recombination of hot carriers in the plasmonic nanostructure. We determine the plexcitonic spectrum from the electroluminescence and find Rabi splittings exceeding 50 meV in strong coupling regime. Our experimental findings are supported by electromagnetic simulations that enable us to explore systematically, and in detail, the emergence of plexciton polaritons as well as the polarization characteristics of their far-field emission. Spectral imaging extends the concept of traditional color cameras to capture images across multiple spectral channels and has broad application prospects. Conventional spectral cameras based on scanning methods suffer from low acquisition speed and large volume. On-chip computational spectral imaging based on metasurface filters provides a promising scheme for portable applications, but endures long computation time for point-by-point iterative spectral reconstruction and mosaic effect in the reconstructed spectral images. In this study, we demonstrated on-chip rapid spectral imaging eliminating the mosaic effect in the spectral image by deep-learning-based spectral data cube reconstruction. We experimentally achieved four orders of magnitude speed improvement than iterative spectral reconstruction and high fidelity of spectral reconstruction over 99% for a standard color board. In particular, we demonstrated video-rate spectral imaging for moving objects and outdoor driving scenes with good performance for recognizing metamerism, where the concolorous sky and white cars can be distinguished via their spectra, showing great potential for autonomous driving and other practical applications in the field of intelligent perception.

On-chip spectral imaging based on engineered spectral modulation and computational spectral reconstruction provides a promising scheme for portable spectral cameras. However, the angle dependence of modulation units results in the angle sensitivity of spectral imaging, which limits its practical applications. Here, we proposed a design for angle-robust spectral recovery based on a group of topology-optimized plasmonic metasurface units under a 30{\deg} field-of-view, and demonstrate angle-insensitive on-chip spectral imaging in the wavelength range of 450 to 750 nm for average polarization. Furthermore, we experimentally verified the angle-insensitive spectral filtering effects of the fabricated metasurface units, and demonstrated angle-robust spectral reconstruction with a fidelity of 98%. Our approach expands the application scale of spectral imaging, and provides a guidance for designing other angle-robust devices.

Highly compact lasers with ultra-low threshold and single-mode continuous wave (CW) operation have been a long sought-after component for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs), due to their excellent ability of trapping light and enhancing light-matter interaction, have been investigated in lasing configurations combining various BIC cavities and optical gain materials. However, the realization of BIC laser with a highly compact size and an ultra-low CW threshold has remained elusive. We demonstrate room temperature CW BIC lasers in the 1310 nm O-band wavelength range, by fabricating a miniaturized BIC cavity in an InAs/GaAs epitaxial quantum dot (QD) gain membrane. By enabling effective trapping of both light and carriers in all three dimensions, ultra-low threshold of 12 {\mu}W (0.052 kW/cm^2) is achieved. Single-mode lasing is also realized in cavities as small as only 5*5 unit-cells (~2.5*2.5 {\mu}m^2 cavity size) with a mode volume of 1.16({\lambda}/n)^3. With its advantages in terms of a small footprint, ultralow power consumption, robustness of fabrication and adaptability for integration, the mini-BIC lasers offer a perspective light source for future PICs aimed at high-capacity optical communications, sensing and quantum information.

Spectral imaging paves way for various fields and particular in biomedical research. However, spectral imaging mainly depending on spatial or temporal scanning, cannot achieve high temporal, spatial and spectral resolution simultaneously. In this study, we demonstrated a silicon real-time ultra-spectral imaging chip based on reconfigurable metasurfaces, comprising of 155,216 (356$\times$436) image-adaptive micro-spectrometers with ultra-high center-wavelength accuracy of 0.04 nm and spectral resolution of 0.8 nm. It is employed for imaging brain hemodynamics, and the dynamic spectral absorption properties of deoxyhemoglobin and oxyhemoglobin in a rat barrel cortex were obtained, which enlighten the spectroscopy in vivo studies and other real-time applications.
