Patients with Behçet's disease often use complementary and alternative medicine for treating their symptoms, and herbal medicine is one of the options. This systematic review provides updated clinical evidence of the effectiveness of herbal medicine for the treatment of Behçet's disease (BD). We searched eleven electronic databases from inception to March 2020. All randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-RCTs of BD treatment with herbal medicine decoctions were included. We used the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions to assess the risk of bias and the grading of recommendations assessment, development and evaluation (GRADE) approach to assess the certainty of evidence (CoE). Albatross plot was also used to present the direction of effect observed. Eight studies were included. The risk of bias was unclear or low. The methodological quality was low or very low. Seven RCTs showed significant effects of herbal medicine on the total response rate (Risk ratio, RR 1.26, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.45, seven studies, very low CoE). Four RCTs showed favorable effects of herbal medicine on the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) level compared with drug therapy. Herbal medicine favorably affected the ESR (MD -5.56, 95% CI -9.99 to -1.12, p = 0.01, I 2 = 96%, five studies, very low CoE). However, herbal medicine did not have a superior effect on CRP. Two RCTs reported that herbal medicine significantly decreased the recurrence rate after three months of follow-up (RR 0.23, 95% CI 0.09 to 0.63, two studies, low CoE). Our findings suggest that herbal medicine is effective in treating BD. However, the included studies had a poor methodological quality and some limitations. Well-designed clinical trials with large sample sizes are needed.

Background: This survey aimed to investigate clinicians' perceptions and current practice patterns of Korean medicine (KM) treatment for female infertility., Methods: A questionnaire on clinical practice patterns of KM treatment for female infertility was constructed and distributed to 703 KM doctors (KMDs)., Results: A total of 20.5% of physicians (n = 144/703) completed the survey and delivered integrative care for female infertility patients. Integrative care mainly consisted of acupuncture, herbal medicine, and moxibustion. The participants largely relied on radiological findings on ultrasonography and hormone tests for diagnosis. The most frequently prescribed herbal medication was Jogyeongjongok-tang (Tiaojing Zhongyu decoction), and the most frequently applied acupoints were SP6, CV4 and ST36., Conclusions: This study provides expert opinions and information on actual clinical practice patterns of KM for treating female infertility. However, we cannot completely discount the possibility that biased selection of subjects and the low response rate limit the interpretations of the study results., (Copyright © 2020 The Authors. Introduction: Many infertile patients have used Korean medicines (KMs) as a primary or adjuvant therapeutic method to improve in vitro fertilization success rates. The aim of this multicenter observational study is to investigate the effects of KMs on poor ovarian reserve (POR) in infertile patients., Methods and Analysis: We will perform a prospective multicenter observational study. This study will recruit 50 women between 25 and 44 years of age with infertility caused by POR from among patients who visit the KM clinic. All participants will visit the KM clinic on the 2nd or 3rd day of menstruation to receive the KMs. KM treatment will be delivered for 3 menstrual cycles (3 months) and will include herbal decoction, acupuncture, or moxibustion on demand. Every participant will be assessed based on KM clinical symptoms, a quality of life questionnaire, and ovarian reserve test results., Ethics and Dissemination: The study was approved by Institutional Review Board of Semyung University (SMU-IM-190501). The data will be extracted independently by 2 authors using predefined criteria. Disagreements will be resolved by discussion between the authors. Background: Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is often used in women's health care to treat dysmenorrhea, increase the milk supply, and address symptoms of menopause. The object of this review is to evaluate the current evidence on the efficacy of fennel for the management menopausal symptoms., Methods and Analyses: Thirteen databases will be searched from their inception to the present. These include PubMed, AMED, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, six Korean medical databases (Korean Studies Information Service System, DBPIA, the Korean Institute of Science and Technology Information, the Research Information Service System, KoreaMed, and the Korean National Assembly Library), and 3 Chinese databases (the China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database [CNKI], the Chongqing VIP Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database [VIP], and Wanfang Database). Study selection, data extraction, and assessments will be performed independently by 2 researchers. Background: Chinese herbal injections (CHIs) are commonly used for the treatment of heart failure in China. Due to the variety of CHIs used in clinic, selecting a suitable CHI for patients with heart failure is vital. This study aims to assess and compare the effect of different CHIs for heart failure using network meta-analysis (NMA)., Methods: Six electronic databases, including PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database will be search from inception to January 2018. Randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing CHI with another CHI will be included. The primary outcome will be changes in heart function classification and left ventricular ejection fraction. Risk of bias assessment of the included RCTs will be conducted according to the Cochrane Handbook 5.1.0. A Bayesian NMA will be performed using WinBUGS 14 software and the result figures will be generated using Stata 13 software. GRADE will be used to explore the quality of evidence., Results: The results of this NMA will be published in a peer-reviewed journal., Conclusion: Our study will generate evidence of CHIs for patients with heart failure and provide suggestions for Chinese medicine clinical practice or guideline., Ethics and Dissemination: Ethics approval and patient consent are not required because this study is an NMA based solely on the published literature. Background: Danggui Liuhuang (DLH) decoction is a traditional herbal medicine that is widely used in East Asia to treat menopausal symptoms. Most of the available clinical trials that investigated DLH decoction have been included in this review. The objectives of this protocol are to provide the information of how to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of DLH decoction for the treatment of menopausal symptoms., Methods and Analysis: Fourteen databases will be searched from inception until February 2018. We will include randomized controlled trials (RCTs) testing any type of DLH decoction. All RCTs investigating DLH decoction or modified DLH decoction will be included. Background: Bojungikki-tang, a herbal medicine for strengthening the digestive system, has been widely used in East Asian countries since the Yuan Dynasty in China. Moreover, Bojungikki-tang has reportedly exhibited anti-allergy effects in many clinical trials. This systematic review will assess the effectiveness and safety of Bojungikki-tang for allergic rhinitis (AR)., Methods and Analysis: Eleven databases, including Asian databases, will be searched for studies conducted through October 2017. We will include randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing Bojungikki-tang for AR. Danggui Shaoyao San (DSS), a traditional herbal prescription, has long been used to treat menopause-related symptoms, including dysmenorrhea. We conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy of DSS for dysmenorrhea. We searched the following electronic databases through October 2015: PubMed; EMBASE; the Cochrane Library; AMED; five Korean databases (KoreaMed, DBPIA, OASIS, RISS, and KISS); three Chinese databases (CNKI, Wan Fang Database, and VIP), and one Japanese database (CiNii). The Cochrane criteria were used to assess the risk of bias for the individual studies. All randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of DSS or modified DSS were included. Data from all articles were extracted by two independent reviewers. Meta-analysis was used to pool the data. A total of 746 potentially relevant studies were identified, and four RCTs met our inclusion criteria. All of the included RCTs had a high risk of bias across their domains. Three RCTs showed favourable effects of DSS on response rate compared with conventional medicine, and a meta-analysis showed that DSS had superior effects compared to analgesics (RR: 1.31, 95%CI, 1.06-1.63, I(2)=73%). One RCT showed a beneficial effect of DSS on pain compared with placebo control. Our systematic review and meta-analysis provided suggestive evidence of the superiority of DSS over analgesics or placebo for dysmenorrhea. The objective of this review was to analyze the trial data on the efficacy and safety of Gan Mai Da Zao (GMDZ) decoction for depression. PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and EMBASE, AMED, Korea Med, DBPIA, OASIS, RISS, KISS, CNKI, Wan Fang Database, and VIP were searched through to May 2014. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) testing GMDZ decoction for any type of depression were considered. All RCTs of GMDZ decoction or modified GMDZ decoction were included. Data were extracted by 2 independent reviewers. Meta-analysis was used for the pooled data. A total of 298 potentially relevant studies were identified, and 13 RCTs met our inclusion criteria. All of the included RCTs had a high risk of bias across their domains. Three RCTs failed to show favorable effects of GMDZ decoction on response rate or HAMD score in major depression. One RCT showed a beneficial effect of GMDZ decoction on response rate in post-surgical depression, while another failed to do so. Two studies showed favorable effects on response rate in post-stroke depression, while another two failed to do so. A meta-analysis, however, showed that GMDZ decoction produced better response rates than anti-depressants in post-stroke depression (RR: 1.17, I(2)=15%). One trial failed to show any beneficial effects of GMDZ decoction on response rate or HAMD score in depression in an elderly sample. Two trials tested GMDZ decoction in combination with anti-depressants but failed to show effects on response rate in major depression, while another did show beneficial effects on response rate in post-stroke depression. In summary, our systematic review and meta-analysis failed to provide evidence of the superiority of GMDZ decoction over anti-depressant therapies for major depression, post-surgical depression, or depression in the elderly, although there was evidence of an effect in post-stroke depression.
