The biosafety and sustainability of inorganic perovskites or organic piezopolymers is a major concern in the field of wearable piezoelectric sensors. Naturally occurring, silk fibroin (SF), is a promising alternative for the realization of organic piezoelectric devices due to its excellent biocompatibility and tunable material properties. Nevertheless, its scope for practical sensing applications is limited by the weak innate piezoelectricity of 1 pC N−1. This research aims to improve the piezoelectricity of pristine SF by intrinsically growing non‐toxic metal‐free perovskite (MFP) to achieve organic and bendable silk fibroin‐metal free perovskite (SF‐MFP) composite films. The increase in MFP loading has an influence on the resulting morphology and crystallinity of SF‐MFP films. In comparison to pristine SF, the films with the highest perovskite loading exhibit an enhanced normal piezoelectric response of 4.6 pm V−1. The poled SF‐MFP sensors display an appreciable sensitivity of 0.61 ± 0.05 V N−1 with a fast response time and outstanding stability arising from a synergistic combination of mechanically robust SF and piezoelectric MFP. Furthermore, these sensors can detect various joint bending and muscle movements in human subjects, proving their suitability for wearable bioelectronics. Piezoelectric biomaterials have attracted great attention owing to the recent recognition of the impact of piezoelectricity on biological systems and their potential applications in implantable sensors, actuators, and energy harvesters. However, their practical use is hindered by the weak piezoelectric effect caused by the random polarization of biomaterials and the challenges of large-scale alignment of domains. Here, we present an active self-assembly strategy to tailor piezoelectric biomaterial thin films. The nanoconfinement-induced homogeneous nucleation overcomes the interfacial dependency and allows the electric field applied in-situ to align crystal grains across the entire film. The β-glycine films exhibit an enhanced piezoelectric strain coefficient of 11.2 pm V−1 and an exceptional piezoelectric voltage coefficient of 252 × 10−3 Vm N−1. Of particular significance is that the nanoconfinement effect greatly improves the thermostability before melting (192 °C). This finding offers a generally applicable strategy for constructing high-performance large-sized piezoelectric bio-organic materials for biological and medical microdevices. Dental caries and traumatic injuries to teeth may cause irreversible inflammation and eventual death of the dental pulp. Nevertheless, predictably, repair and regeneration of the dentin-pulp complex remain a formidable challenge. In recent years, smart multifunctional materials with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and pro-regenerative properties have emerged as promising approaches to meet this critical clinical need. As a unique class of smart materials, piezoelectric materials have an unprecedented advantage over other stimuli-responsive materials due to their inherent capability to generate electric charges, which have been shown to facilitate both antimicrobial action and tissue regeneration. Nonetheless, studies on piezoelectric biomaterials in the repair and regeneration of the dentin-pulp complex remain limited. In this review, we summarize the biomedical applications of piezoelectric biomaterials in dental applications and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms contributing to the biological effect of piezoelectricity. Highly compact and geometrically complex piezoceramics are required by a variety of electromechanical devices owing to their outstanding piezoelectricity, mechanical stability and extended application scenarios. 3D printing is currently the mainstream technology for fabricating geometrically complex piezoceramic components. However, it is hard to print piezoceramics in a curve shape while also keeping its compactness due to restrictions on the ceramic loading and the viscosity of feedstocks. Here, we report a gravity-driven sintering (GDS) process to directly fabricate curved and compact piezoceramics by exploiting gravitational force and high-temperature viscous behavior of sintering ceramic specimens. The sintered lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics possess curve geometries that can be facilely tuned via the initial mechanical boundary design, and exhibit high piezoelectric properties comparable to those of conventional-sintered compact PZT (d33 = 595 pC/N). In contrast to 3D printing technology, our GDS process is suitable for scale-up production and low-cost production of piezoceramics with diverse curved surfaces. Our GDS strategy is an universal and facile route to fabricate curved piezoceramics and other functional ceramics with no compromise of their functionalities. Fabricating geometrically complex piezoceramics in compact sintered bodies has been difficult to achieve. Softening of piezoelectric materials facilitates the development of flexible wearables and energy harvesting devices. However, as one of the most competitive candidates, piezoelectric ceramic-polymer composites inevitably exhibit reduced power-generation capability and weak mechanical strength due to the mismatch of strength and permittivity between the two phases inside. Herein a flexible, air-permeable, and high-performance piezoceramic textile composite with a mechanically reinforced hierarchical porous structure is introduced. Based on a template-assisted sol-gel method, a three-order hierarchical ceramic textile is constructed by intertwining submillimeter-scale multi-ply ceramic fibers that are further formed by twisting micrometer-scale one-ply ceramic fibrils. Theoretical analysis indicates that large mechanical stress can be easily induced in the multi-order hierarchical structure, which greatly benefits the electrical output. Fabricated samples generate an opencircuit voltage of 128 V, a short-circuit current of 120 μA, and an instantaneous power density of 0.75 mW cm-2, much higher than the previously reported works. The developed multi-order and 3D-interconnected piezoceramic textile shows satisfactory piezoelectricity (d33 of 190 pm V-1), air permeability (45.1 mm s-1), flexibility (Young's modulus of 0.35 GPa), and toughness (0.125 MJ m-3), collectively. The soft millirobot is a promising candidate for emerging applications in various in‐vivo/vitro biomedical settings. Despite recent success in its design and actuation, the absence of sensing ability makes it still far from being a reality. Here, a radio frequency identification (RFID) based battery‐less soft millirobot that can move, sense, and communicate remotely by coupling the magnetic and piezoelectric effects is reported. This design integrates the robot actuation and power generation units within a thin multilayer film (<0.5 mm), i.e., a lower magnetic composite limb decorated with multiple feet imparts locomotion and a flexible piezoceramic composite film recovers energy simultaneously. Under a trigger of external magnetic guidance, the millirobot can achieve remote locomotion, environment monitoring, and wireless communication with no requirement of any on‐board battery or external wired power supply. Furthermore, this robot demonstrates the sensing capability in measuring environment temperature and contact interface by two different sensing models, i.e., carried‐on and build‐in sensing mode, respectively. In this paper, we propose a truss-based compressive-mode piezoelectric energy harvester to harness energy from low frequency vibrations with a wide bandwidth and a high-power output. The design is an integration of mainly three modules: separated excitation mechanism from transduction mechanism for low resonant frequency, truss mechanism for magnification of the applied force onto the piezoelectric element, and amplitude limit mechanism to induce impact forces. We then formulate the harvester as a two-degrees-of-freedom system featured by superposition of harmonic and impact-induced nonlinear responses. Based on our structure design, we fabricate a prototype to conduct experimental studies. The experimental results show that the harvester is capable of harnessing energy efficiently from vibrations at the resonant frequencies of 3.3 and 6.09 Hz. The total bandwidth is expanded to 4.2 Hz owing to the structure nonlinearity and bifurcation. The open circuit voltage reaches 83.3 V and maximum power gets up to 38.2 mW with the matching impedance. Piezoelectric energy harvesting is envisioned as an ideal complement to batteries for long-life operation of wireless or remote electronic devices. Most piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs) utilize piezoelectric plates or discs as the energy transducing elements, and they cannot generate enough power for most potential applications. In this study, we explore a new way of using arc-shaped piezoelectric patches as the core transducing elements in energy harvesters to improve their performance. An analytical model is developed via the Castigliano’s theorem to elucidate the low stiffness characteristic of the arc-shaped structure. A finite element analysis is conducted, and the results indicate that high and evenly-distributed stress can be easily induced in the arc-shaped PEHs. Prototypes are fabricated with arc-shaped piezoelectric elements and flat piezoelectric plates, respectively, and tested under the same conditions. The experimental data demonstrate that the arc-shaped PEHs are capable of generating 2.55–4.25 times as much power as the equivalent flat-plate PEHs. Piezoelectric energy harvesters have great potential for achieving inexhaustible power supply for small-scale electronic devices. However, the insufficient power-generation capability and the narrow working bandwidth of traditional energy harvesters have significantly hindered their adoption. To address these issues, we propose a nonlinear compressive-mode piezoelectric energy harvester. We embedded a multi-stage force amplification mechanism into the energy harvester, which greatly improved its power-generation capability. In this article, we describe how we first established an analytical model to study the force amplification effect. A lumped-parameter model was then built to simulate the strong nonlinear responses of the proposed energy harvester. A prototype was fabricated which demonstrated a superior power output of 30 mW under an excitation of 0.3g ( g = 9 . 8 m/s2). We discuss at the end the effect of geometric parameters that are influential to the performance. Harnessing ambient vibration energy using piezoelectric materials is a promising alternative solution to batteries to inexhaustibly power small-scale mobile devices. This paper presents an innovative energy harvester, named high-efficiency compressive-mode piezoelectric energy harvester (HC-PEH). It consists of a pair of elastic beams and a flex-compressive center where the piezoelectric element bears a dynamic compressive load. The compressive mode is preferred than the commonly-used bending mode and tensile mode due to the superior compressive strength of piezoceramics. To cater to the characteristic of piezoceramics: large ultimate stress, but extremely small ultimate strain, a multi-stage force amplification mechanism is developed in the design. The HC-PEH shows superior capability of high power output and favorable nonlinear phenomena at low frequency range. Under an acceleration of 0.5 g (g = 9.8 m/s 2 ), a maximum power of 19 mW is produced at 21 Hz, which is about one order of magnitude higher than the power output of energy harvesters previously reported. In this paper, we originally report an approach for cantilever piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs) for frequency tuning and performance improvement. The proposed scheme implements embedment of revolute joint(s) into PEH structure. We investigated two ways of embedment: the prior one is to replace the clamped edge partially with a joint and the other is to incorporate joint(s) into the substrate plane. Introducing joint mechanism reduces stiffness of the harvester, leading to more intense vibration and higher voltage of the piezoelectric element. We conducted FEA to validate hypothetical stiffness reduction by deriving resonant frequency considering parameters of joint width, length and number. Furthermore, experimental studies were conducted to compare open-circuit voltages in the frequency domain, power generation and capacitor-charging capabilities. The resonant frequencies from experiments display a good agreement with those from our simulation estimations. The embedded joint(s) effectively lowers resonant frequency by ∼43.1%. The output voltage of jointed cases increases ∼71.2 V, 2.83 times as high as that of the counterpart case. The mean power of the jointed cases reaches 0.49 mW, 7.3 times as high as that of the counterpart case. This paper originally investigates the influence of frequency-up conversion effect on piezoelectric stack generators for high-performance energy harvesting. A compressive-mode piezoelectric generator is proposed comprised of a piezostack and a spring-mass system for electromechanical transduction and mechanical excitation, respectively. The frequency-up conversion effect is induced by amplitude truncations of the mass under external excitation. A control group, i.e. without truncation, is set for performance comparisons. Experimental results indicate that, with the frequency-up conversion, instantaneous power and average power are enhanced by over 1000 and 177 times, respectively. Each voltage response cycle consists of two stages: high-frequency high-amplitude oscillation and the rest of low-frequency low-amplitude harmonic vibration. The frequency of the former stage determines impedance matching. Due to the frequency converted up by 69 times, and intrinsic high capacitance of the stack, the matched resistance is significantly reduced from over 5 kΩ to 73.10 Ω, resulting much higher power response than that without conversion. Additionally, increase of spring stiffness causes the decrease of voltage responses and less effectiveness of frequency conversion effect. In this work we conclusively report that an instantaneous peak power output of 0.32 W can be generated from a millimeter-size piezoelectric generator, which can foster development of high-viability self-powered applications.
