Sublethal effects of low and high molecular weight phthalates were assessed in Unio with a biomarker approach using gills and digestive gland as the main targets of xenobiotic uptake. Diisononyl phthalate, diisodecyl phthalate and dimethyl phthalate were studied for aquatic toxicity to nontarget freshwater mussels. Adult Unio sp. were exposed to sublethal concentrations. After 96 h exposure, total hemocyte counts in hemolymph and malondialdehyde, glutathione, superoxide dismutase, advanced oxidation protein product and protein yields in gill and digestive gland were determined. Total hemocyte counts increased significantly in the dimethyl phthalate and diisodecyl phthalate exposure groups, but decreased in diisononyl phthalate group. Malondialdehyde levels were higher in dimethyl phthalate in both tissues; whereas diisodecyl phthalate caused increase only in gills. Gill glutathione levels were lower in the diisodecyl phthalate while higher in the dimethyl phthalate in both tissues. Superoxide dismutase activities of both tissues decreased in test groups. Advanced oxidation protein product levels were higher in digestive gland than gill and in test groups compared to control. Differences in xenobiotic bioavailability may cause dissimilar responses even though these phthalates have low solubility. Changes in the biomarkers of lipid peroxidation indicate possible initial physical absorption by the mussel.

Wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.) is a widespread weed of the southeastern cropping region of Australia. Seed germination ecology of S. arvensis populations selected from different climatic regions may differ due to adaptative traits. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of temperature, light, radiant heat, soil moisture, salt concentration, and burial depth on seed germination and seedling emergence of two populations (Queensland [Qld] population: tropical region; and Victoria [Vic] population: temperate region) of S. arvensis. Both populations germinated over a wide range of day/night (12-h/12-h) temperatures (15/5 to 35/25 C), and had the highest germination at 30/20 C. Under complete darkness, the Qld population (61%) had higher germination than the Vic population (21%); however, under the light/dark regime, both populations had similar germination (78% to 86%). At 100 C pretreatment for 5 min, the Qld population (44%) had higher germination than the Vic population (13%). Germination of both populations was nil when given pretreatment at 150 and 200 C. The Vic population was found tolerant to high osmotic and salt stress compared with the Qld population. At an osmotic potential of −0.4 MPa, germination of Qld and Vic populations was reduced by 85% and 42%, respectively, compared with their respective controls. At 40, 80, and 160 mM sodium chloride, germination was lower for the Qld population than the Vic population. Averaged over the populations, seedling emergence was highest (52%) from a burial depth of 1 cm and was nil from 8-cm depth. Differential germination behaviors of both populations to temperature, light, radiant heat, water stress, and salt stress suggest that populations of S. arvensis may have undergone differential adaptation. Knowledge gained from this study will assist in developing suitable control measures for this weed species to reduce the soil seedbank.

Wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.) is well-known as an important weed for cultivated land, particularly when found among cereal crops. It produces large amounts of heteromorphic (black and brown) seeds. This study aimed to estimate the critical temperature thresholds of wild mustard heteromorphic seeds. For this purpose, a novel Weibull-based thermal time model was developed, which was applied to compare the germination characteristics of the heteromorphic seeds of wild mustard. Germination was investigated by exposing the seeds to eight constant temperatures of 7.5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 37.5 °C. Over both the sub- and supraoptimal ranges, the proposed model reasonably explained the germination patterns of both seed types in response to temperature. Heteromorphic seeds of wild mustard exhibited different germination behaviors in response to different temperatures. Brown seeds were more cold-tolerant and could germinate rapidly to a high percentage (68%) in a wider range of temperature environments (2.78–38.05 °C); black seeds germinated at a narrower temperature range (4.99–37.97 °C) and a large proportion of black seeds remained dormant (77%). These differences could lead to the temporal distribution of seed germination throughout the growing season.

Sinapis arvensis, belonging to the genus Sinapis of the family Brassicaceae, has good agronomic characters that make it a valuable genetic resource for crop improvement and is a cytoplasmic source of heterologous cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS). In addition, S. arvensis has played an important role in the evolution of the six major cultivated Brassica species involved in the triangle of U. Using next-generation sequencing, we assembled and revealed the gene composition of S. arvensis cytoplasmic genome. The chloroplast genome comprises 153,590 bp, with 112 individual genes, including 4 rRNA, 29 tRNA, and 79 protein-coding genes. The mitochondrial genome comprises 240,024 bp, with 54 genes, including 18 tRNA, three rRNA and 33 protein-coding genes. Genome structure and evolutionary analysis indicated that the sequences of the S. arvensis organellar genomes were more similar to those of Brassica nigra and B. carinata than to those of other Brassicaceae species. Four mitochondrial open reading frames displaying chimeric structural features and encoding hypothetical proteins with transmembrane domains may account for the infertility of Nsa CMS previously derived from somatic cell hybridization between B. napus and S. arvensis. These results will not only contribute to utilize the germplasm resource of S. arvensis, and comprehend the evolution of organelle genomes within the Brassicaceae family, but also help to identify genes conditioning the alloplasmic male sterility of Nsa CMS in B. napus.

One side effect of human activity and global climatic change is more airborne dust. This not only has undesirable effects on human health and the environment, but may also adversely affect many agricultural processes, including herbicide efficacy. This is particularly relevant in parts of the world where dust storms are common and limited rainfall means dust persists on plants for protracted periods. Accordingly, a series of greenhouse dose–response pot experiments was carried out to quantify the effect of a dust concentration of 1,500 µg/m³ on the performance of paraquat, glyphosate, sulfosulfuron and 2,4‐D+MCPA. Dust‐treated and untreated seedlings of Hordeum spontaneum and Sinapis arvensis were sprayed with sulfosulfuron and 2,4‐D+MCPA, respectively, while paraquat and glyphosate were applied to both weed species. The efficacy of glyphosate and paraquat decreased significantly in the presence of dust on both species. Similar results were observed for 2,4‐D+MCPA on S. arvensis. In contrast, the efficacy of sulfosulfuron on H. spontaneum was not affected by dust. In the presence of dust, the doses of glyphosate, paraquat and 2,4‐D+MCPA required for a 90% effect were enhanced by a factor of 1.9 to 2.6. The negative impact on glyphosate efficacy was more pronounced in S. arvensis than H. spontaneum, while it was similar for paraquat. Future studies should consider the amount, duration and composition of dust as well as its impact on other weeds and herbicides. Potential approaches to overcome the detrimental influence of dust on the performance of herbicides were also suggested for future studies.

Weeds are among the main limitations on chickpea production in Iran. The efficacy of herbicide treatments including linuron PPI, imazethapyr PPI, PRE, and POST, pendimethalin PPI and POST, bentazon POST, pyridate POST, and oxadiazon POST along with one or two hand weedings were evaluated for weed control and yield response in rain-fed chickpea in Aleshtar, Lorestan, Iran in 2015 and 2016. Wild safflower, threehorn bedstraw, wild mustard, and hoary cress were the predominant weed species in both experimental years. Total weed dry biomass in weedy check plots averaged 187 and 238 g m–2 in 2015 and 2016, respectively, and weed density and biomass were reduced in all treatments compared to the weedy check in both years. Treatments composed of pyridate followed by one hand weeding or imazethapyr POST followed by two hand weedings resulted in the lowest weed biomass. The presence of weeds reduced yield by 74% and 66% in the weedy check plots compared to the weed-free control plots in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Application of oxadiazon, bentazon, and imazethapyr PPI, PRE, and POST resulted in lower chickpea yields. All herbicides tested injured chickpea slightly, with pyridate causing the least injury.Nomenclature: Bentazon; imazethapyr; linuron; oxadiazon; pendimethalin; pyridate; hoary cress, Cardaria draba (L.) Reduced water availability can cause physiological stress in plants that affects floral development leading to changes in floral morphology and traits that mediate interactions with pollinators. As pollinators can detect small changes in trait expressions, drought-induced changes in floral traits could affect pollinator visitations. However, the linkage between changes in floral traits and pollinator visitations under drought conditions is not well explored. We, therefore, tested whether drought-induced changes in floral morphology and abundance of flowers are linked to changes in pollinator visitations. We conducted flight cage experiments with a radio frequency identification system for automated visitation recordings with bumble bees (Bombus terrestris) and common charlock (Sinapis arvensis) as the model system. In total, we recorded interactions for 31 foraging bumble bees and 6569 flower visitations. We found that decreasing soil moisture content correlated with decreasing size of all measured morphological traits except stamen length and nectar tube width. The reductions in floral size, petal width and length, nectar tube depth and number of flowers resulted in decreasing visitation rates by bumble bees. These decreasing visitations under lower soil moisture availability might be explained by lower numbers of flowers and thus a reduced attractiveness and/or by increased difficulties experienced by bumble bees in handling smaller flowers. Whether these effects act additively or synergistically on pollinator behaviour and whether this leads to changes in pollen transfer and to different selectionp ressures require further investigation., Under dry conditions, plants can reduce their flower number and size to save water. Such changes, however may lead to reduced pollinator visitations as these traits play an important role in pollinator attraction. In this study, we explored how drought affects pollinator visitation via changes in floral traits. Therefore, we conducted a flight cage experiment with an automated visitation recording system observing bumblebee interactions with drought stressed and well-watered plants. Our results show that decreasing flower number and size under drought conditions resulted in decreasing bumblebee visits. This indicates that drought-stressed plants become less attractive for pollinators.

Wheat is one of the most important crops grown all around the world. Weeds cause significant yield loss and damage to wheat and their control is generally based on herbicide application. Regular use leads to herbicide resistance in weeds. This study aims to reveal molecular detection of Sinapis arvensis resistance mutation against ALS inhibiting herbicides. For this purpose, survey studies have been carried out in wheat growing areas in Amasya, Çorum, Tokat, and Yozgat provinces and wild mustard seeds have been collected from 310 different fields. According to bioassay tests with tribenuron-methyl, 13 of these populations, have not been affected by the registered dose of herbicide. When survived populations were subjected to dose-effect study and herbicides were applied at 26-fold, the highest and lowest resistance coefficients were determined as 7.2 (A-007) and 1.02 (T-034) respectively. In addition, B domain region from ALS gene was amplified and analyzed in molecular studies to determine point mutation in wild mustard against ALS herbicides. The PCR products were sequenced and target-site mutation to Leucine was observed at Trp-574 amino acide. In the study, point mutation in Trp-574 amino acide and Trp-574 Leu mutation in Sinapis arvensis have been detected for the first time in Turkey.

Weed resistance to herbicides is a serious agricultural issue that threatens the sustainability of world food production, as its widespread appearance has reduced the diversity of weed control practices and posed economic and environmental risks. Wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis), a very competitive weed in winter cereals, has evolved resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides used in Greece. As growth rate and genetic structure of weeds affect their competitive ability against crops, the purpose of this work was to study the effect of geographical origin and resistance profile on growth rate and genetic structure of five S. arvensis populations. In particular, the cross-resistant to tribenuron and imazamox P2, P3 and P4 populations originating from the counties of Larissa, Phthiotida, and Pieria, respectively, the resistant to tribenuron P1 originating from Chalkidiki and the susceptible PS originating from Thessaloniki were evaluated. The growth rate was studied by determining fresh weight, number of leaves, height, and seed weight of plants, whereas the genetic structure by using six inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) molecular markers. Regarding growth rate, the b slope values of the linear equation fitted on fresh weight regression against sampling time were 10.87, 9.94 and 11.41 for P2, P3 and P4 populations, respectively, which were higher than those of P1 (8.03) and PS (6.79) populations, while the b slopes of leaf number were 3.8 and 4.63 for P3 and P1 populations, which were higher than those of PS (2.1), P2 (2.79) and P4 (2.84). The use of ISSR markers showed also differences between populations in their genetic structure parameters [genetic diversity (h), Shannon index (I), number of alleles (Na), percentage of polymorphic loci for each population (P%), variance among and within populations, and FST value, that is a measure of differentiation among populations due to genetic structure], which attributed to origin and herbicide resistance profile. The ISSR bands indicated that 80% of the molecular variation was within populations and 20% among populations. In addition, the dendrogram produced by the combination of GenALEx and MEGA7 statistical software, along with the corresponding PCoA graphical output indicated similar groups of the individuals belonging in these populations.

The weed species in the common barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) fields in the Diyarbakir were observed with this study. For this purpose, 50 quadrats of 1m by 1m (1 m-2) were randomly placed and examined at each study site. In every set of the quadrat, frequency and density were observed throughout the cropping season of 2015-2016. During the course of field study 72 weed species belonging to 21 families, 13 grasses, 59 broadleaves were recorded. The common families were Asteraceae and Poaceae in the common barley fields. The encounter frequency of weeds was determined by observing 80% wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis L., 80%), animated oat (Avena sterilis L., 63%), common wild oat (Avena fatua L., 54%), corn buttercup (Ranunculus arvensis L., 54%), corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas L., 52%), creeping thistle (Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop., 51%), volunteer lentils (Lens culinaris Medik., 51%). Wild mustard, which had the highest frequency was also the densest weed species (5.18 plant m-2), and other species such as animated oat (4.33 plant m-2), creeping thistle (1.77 plant m-2), common wild oat (1.72 plant m-2), corn buttercup (1.47 plant m-2), cleavers (1.38 plant m-2), corn poppy (1.22 plant m-2), volunteer lentils (1.07 plant m-2) were important species at all the observed fields. It was observed that the great infestation was shown by broadleaf weeds due to the lack of effective weed control in the barley areas.

Different species have different sensitivity to heat waves; therefore, interspecific competition may affect the crop response to heat waves. We investigated the effects of heat waves on spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) grown with and without wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.) as well as the recovery of barleys from stress. The plants were exposed to a 7‐day 35/28oC (day/night) heat wave at ambient CO₂ (400 μmol/mol) and elevated CO₂ (800 μmol/mol). All seedlings were rehydrated and returned to control conditions (21/14oC, CO₂ 400 μmol/mol) after the cease of heat wave and grown for a 7‐day period of recovery. Heat wave had more pronounced negative effect on the barley's aboveground biomass under competition with mustard, whereas the response of root biomass was not influenced by the presence of weeds. The heat wave induced reductions in barley's photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and water use efficiency under interspecific competition were higher compared to monocultured conditions. Interspecific competition impaired and delayed the recovery of barley's biomass production and leaf gas exchange parameters after heat wave. Elevated CO₂ slightly mitigated negative heat wave impact on the growth and leaf gas exchange parameters but had no effect during the recovery period.

The nematicidal efficiency of two types of extracts (aqueous and methanolic) of 5 plants Peganum harmala L., Raphanus raphanistrum L., Taxus baccata L., Sinapis arvensis L., and Ricinus communis L. on second stage juveniles (J2s) of Meloidogyne incognita was evaluated at 4 doses in vitro (40, 50, 60 and 80%) at 4 exposure times (12, 16, 24, and 32 h). In a greenhouse, methanol extracts obtained from 0.75, 1.5, or 3 g of the dry matter of T. baccata, S. arvensis, and P. harmala were added in pots of tomato plants (Moneymaker cultivar) to test the effect of the extracts on the nematode, its reproduction, and the plant’s growth. After 32 h of exposure, the in vitro results on J2s showed that all the aqueous and methanolic extracts of the 5 plants had positive effects on J2 mortality compared to controls; water and DMSO (2%) (dimethyl sulfoxyde). In general, methanolic extracts were significantly more effective than the aqueous ones. Methanolic extracts of T. baccata, P. harmala, and S. arvensis had the highest mortality rates (100, 89.2, 86.6%), respectively, followed by the aqueous extract of T. baccata (73.8%). After 12 days, the hatching inhibition varies between (61.4%) for the aqueous extract of R. communis and (84.2%) for the methanolic extract of T. baccata. The average was significantly different from controls (DMSO 23.8 and water 21.8%) for all extracts. Methanolic extracts were not always significantly different than the aqueous ones. In vivo methanolic extracts of S. arvensis, P. harmala, and T. baccata reduced infestation than the controls. The gall index varied between 3.5 and 5.5 for the extracts than the positive control 6.5. The present study revealed the effectiveness of all tested plant extracts to root-knot nematodes without any chemical inputs.

Tolpyralate is a new 4-hydroxyphenyl-pyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)-inhibiting herbicide for POST weed management in corn; however, there is limited information regarding its efficacy. Six field studies were conducted in Ontario, Canada, over 3 yr (2015 to 2017) to determine the biologically effective dose of tolpyralate for the control of eight annual weed species. Tolpyralate was applied POST at six doses from 3.75 to 120 g ai ha-1 and tank mixed at a 1:33.3 ratio with atrazine at six doses from 125 to 4,000 g ha-1. Regression analysis was performed to determine the effective dose (ED) of tolpyralate, and tolpyralate + atrazine, required to achieve 50%, 80%, or 90% control of eight weed species at 1, 2, 4, and 8 wk after application (WAA). The ED of tolpyralate for 90% control (ED90) of velvetleaf, common lambsquarters, common ragweed, redroot pigweed or Powell amaranth, and green foxtail at 8 WAA was ≤15.5 g ha-1; however, tolpyralate alone did not provide 90% control of wild mustard, barnyardgrass, or ladysthumb at 8WAAat any dose evaluated in this study. In contrast, the ED90 for all species in this study with tolpyralate + atrazine was ≤13.1 + 436 g ha-1, indicating that tolpyralate + atrazine can be highly efficacious at low field doses.Nomenclature: Atrazine; tolpyralate; barnyardgrass, Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Some 154 Brassicaceae genotypes (78 Brassica napus, 38 B. carinata, 25 B. juncea, three Raphanus sativus, two each of Rapistrum rugosum and B. incana and one each of Crambe abyssinica, B. fruticulosa, Hirschfeldia incana, B. insularis, B. oleracea and Sinapis arvensis), were inoculated with a mixture of seven isolates of Hyaloperonospora brassicae to identify effective host resistances. Many highly resistant genotypes were identified, particularly R. sativus Krasnodar Market B (%Disease index 6.6) and Pegletta (%DI 9.0); B. carinata Tamn Rex-sel Green (%DI 7.6), BRA926/18 (%DI 9.7) and PI360884 (%DI 9.7); and B. juncea, Ringot1 (%DI 9.7). A further 13 B. carinata, seven B. juncea and single R. sativus (Boss) and B. incana (UPM6563) genotypes were also highly resistant (%DI 11.1), as were B. oleracea CPI106844 (%DI 14.6) and Crambe abyssinica (%DI 17.4). Almost all B. carinata and B. juncea genotypes showed high resistance (%DI 7.6–22.2). In contrast, B. napus genotypes showed wide ranging responses, from high resistance in SN-8 (%DI 22.2%) to extreme susceptibility in Hyola 450TT and Thunder TT (%DI 83.7, 95.5, respectively). R. rugosum, B. fruticulosa, H. incana and B. insularis genotypes ranged from moderately to highly susceptible (%DI 55.2–78.8). This study highlights the ready availability of very high levels of pathotype-independent resistance across diverse Brassicaceae to H. brassicae, particularly R. sativus, B. carinata, B. juncea, B. oleracea and C. abyssinica. Resistances identified can be utilized as sources of resistance in oilseed and vegetable Brassicaceae breeding programs and/or directly deployed as new varieties where downy mildew is prevalent.

Wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.) is a weed that frequently infests winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) fields in Golestan province, Iran. Tribenuron-methyl (TM) has been used recurrently to control this species, thus selecting for resistant S. arvensis populations. The objectives were: (1) to determine the resistance level to TM of 14 putatively resistant (PR) S. arvensis populations, collected from winter wheat fields in Golestan province, Iran, in comparison to one susceptible (S) population; and (2) to characterize the resistance mechanisms and the potential evolution of cross-resistance to other classes of acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides in three populations (AL-3, G-5, and Ag-Sr) confirmed as being resistant (R) to TM. The TM doses required to reduce the dry weight of the PR populations by 50% were between 2.2 and 16.8 times higher than those needed for S plants. The ALS enzyme activity assays revealed that the AL-3, G-5, and Ag-Sr populations evolved cross-resistance to the candidate ALS-inhibiting herbicides from the sulfonylureas (SU), triazolopyrimidines (TP), pyrimidinyl-thiobenzoates (PTB), sulfonyl-aminocarbonyl-triazolinone (SCT), and imidazolinones (IMI) classes. No differences in absorption, translocation, or metabolism of [14C]TM between R and S plants were observed, suggesting that these non-target mechanisms were not responsible for the resistance. The ALS gene of the R populations contained the Trp-574-Leu mutation, conferring cross-resistance to the SU, SCT, PTB, TP, and IMI classes. The Trp-574-Leu mutation in the ALS gene conferred cross-resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides in S. arvensis from winter wheat fields in Golestan province. This is the first TM resistance case confirmed in this species in Iran.

In the present study, field experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy and compatibility of herbicides and fungicides in durum wheat under Mediterranean semi-arid conditions, in Central Greece. Our results indicate that the herbicide florasulam+2.4-D was safe and did not cause any injury when applied alone or with fungicides, while bromoxynil+2.4-D mixed with azoxystrobin or trifloxystrobin+prothioconazole caused injury symptoms on leaves. The injury symptoms were transient, and observed only at Velestino area, where low temperatures and broad diurnal temperature fluctuations were recorded during the pesticides application period. Regarding septoria leaf blotch control, good results showed strobilurin alone or in mixture with a triazole, regardless the herbicide that was added to the mixture. The results of this study showed that bromoxynil+2.4-D caused injury when mixed with fungicides and applied under cold temperatures, while one fungicide application at stem elongation provided adequate Septoria leaf blotch control.

Wild mustard plant (Sinapis arvensis), Brassicaceae, is a wild vegetable found in forest area, domestic orchards and it is consumed by rural population. This study aimed to evaluate chemical composition (moisture, total dietary fiber, lipids, proteins, ash, carbohydrates and total energetic value), concentration of carotenoids, vitamins (C and E) and minerals (K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn, Na, Cr, Se and Mo) and the contribution by this vegetable to the recommendations of daily consumption of nutrients for adult individuals. Concentrations of provitamin A (252.21 RAE/100 g), Se (0.04 mg/100 g) and Fe (5.91 mg/100 g) stood out, in which this vegetable was considered as an excellent source for these nutrients. In addition, wild mustard was considered a good source of K (435.65 mg/100 g), Ca (123.25 mg/100 g) and Mn (0.40 mg/100 g) and source of Total Dietary Fiber (TDF) (3.20 mg/100 g), Mg (26.82 mg/100 g) and Cu (0.07 mg/100 g). Wild mustard stood out as source, good source or excellent source of the evaluated nutrients, and they may contribute to reduce nutritional deficiency of those nutrients in the populations living in the region where this vegetable occurs. RESUMO Plantas de mostarda silvestre (Sinapis arvensis), Brassicaceae, é uma hortaliça silvestre encontrada em área de florestas, pomares caseiros e consumida por populações rurais. O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar a composição química (umidade, fibra alimentar total, lipídios, proteínas, cinzas, carboidratos e o valor energético total), a concentração de carotenoides, vitaminas (C e E), minerais (K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn, Na, Cr, Se e Mo) e a contribuição desta hortaliça para as recomendações da ingestão diária de nutrientes para indivíduos adultos. Destacaram-se concentrações de provitamina A (252,21 RAE /100 g), Se (0,04 mg/100 g) e Fe (5,91 mg/100 g), sendo a hortaliça considerada excelente fonte desses nutrientes. Ainda, a mostarda silvestre foi considerada boa fonte de K (435,65 mg/100 g), Ca (123,25 mg/100 g) e Mn (0,40 mg/100 g) e fonte de Fibra Alimentar Total (FAT) (3,20 mg/100 g), Mg (26,82 mg/100 g) e Cu (0,07 mg/100 g). Em conclusão, a mostarda silvestre destacou-se como fonte, boa fonte ou excelente fonte dos nutrientes avaliados, e pode contribuir para diminuir a carência nutricional destes nutrientes nas populações residentes na região de ocorrência desta hortaliça.

Four crop-infecting begomoviruses were found naturally affecting Charlock mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.) plants in Jordan and characterized at the molecular level. Symptoms included leaf curling and stunting. PCR analysis showed the presence of Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), Tomato yellow leaf curl Sardinia virus (TYLCSV), Squash leaf curl virus (SLCV) and Watermelon chlorotic stunt virus (WmCSV). These viruses were associated with Cotton leaf curl Gezira betasatellite (CLCuGβ). Sequence analysis revealed that TYLCV and TYLCSV had 98.5% and 99.3% nucleotide (nt) sequence identities with a previously described TYLCV strain from Florida and TYLCSV from Sardinia, respectively. The other two viruses, SLCV and WmCSV, shared 99.7% and 99.5% nt identities with previously described strains from Jordan. Sequence analysis also showed that CLCuGβ had 98.8% nt identity with a strain from Israel. To our knowledge, this is the first report of S. arvensis as a natural host of SLCV, WmCSV, TYLCSV and CLCuGβ.

Concern over the development of herbicide-resistant weeds has led to interest in integrated weed management systems that reduce selection pressure by utilizing mechanical and cultural weed control practices in addition to herbicides. Increasing crop seeding rate increases crop competitive ability and thus can enhance herbicide efficacy. However, it is unknown how increasing the seeding rate affects an herbicide’s efficacy. The objective of this study was to examine the interaction between increasing seeding rate and herbicide dose to control weeds. To meet this objective, the herbicide fluthiacet-methyl was applied to field-grown lentil, with Indian mustard, a proxy for wild mustard, used as a model weed. The experiment was a factorial design with four lentil seeding rates and seven herbicide rates. Overall the herbicide dose response was altered by changing lentil seeding rate. Increasing lentil seeding rate decreased the weed biomass production when herbicides were not applied. In two of the four site-years, increasing lentil seeding rate lowered the herbicide ED50, the dose required to result in a 50% reduction in weed biomass. Increasing the crop seeding rate altered the dose response to provide greater weed control at lower herbicide rates compared with normal crop seeding rates. Increased seeding rates also resulted in higher and more stable crop seed yields across a wider range of herbicide dosages. These results suggest that dose–response models can be used to evaluate the efficacy of other weed management practices that can interact with herbicide performance.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of weed density and different weed control treatments on chickpea yield and yield components. The experiment was carried out in split plot design with 3 replications in experimental fields of Kirsehir Ahi Evran University during 2016 and 2017 crop seasons. Total nine treatments (no weed control, permanent weed control, one-time hoeing, two-time hoeing, three-time hoeing, herbicide application after emergence, one-time hoeing with herbicide application, two-time hoeing with herbicide application and three-time hoeing with herbicide application) were compared to know the most effective weed control method. Vaccaria pyramidata Medik., Sinapis arvensis L., Acroptilon repens L. weed species were found to be the most intense in the experimental area. All weed control applications had significant effect on chickpea yield and yield components compared to weedy plots. Three-time hoeing with herbicide application increased the yield by 361.55-478.50% compared to weedy plots. Likewise, three-time hoeing application even increased the yield by 348.50-357.09% compared to weedy plots. The results revealed that threetime hoeing with herbicide and three-time hoeing applications stood out in weed management to obtain a good yield in chickpea cultivation at Kirsehir province. © 2020, Agricultural Research Communication Centre. The aims of this study were to determine the effects of burial on germination and longevity, and of water stress and temperature on germination and dormancy induction of the weed Sinapis arvensis L. During exposure to the high temperatures of summer, seeds buried in the field became nondormant, but low water potential and supra-optimal temperatures (constant not alternating) induced them into secondary dormancy. The threshold temperature for dormancy induction (TTDI) was about 19 °C when water was not limiting germination, and it decreased with a slope of 10 °C per MPa as water potential decreased. Seeds had minimum dormancy (Dmin) when T < TTDI, and Dmin decreased by 81.5% per MPa increase in water potential. Dormancy induction increased linearly with a slope of 13.23% for each additional centimetre of burial depth from 1.0 to 5.19 cm. Dormancy was induced to its highest level (96%) in seeds buried at a depth of ≥5.19 cm; the remaining seeds were dead or were presumed to be dead Sinapis arvensis can form a persistent soil seed bank, and either water stress or conditions associated with increased burial depth can promote induction of secondary dormancy in the seeds.

Sclerotinia stem rot, caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, is a serious disease of many cruciferous crops and frequently poses a threat to the sustainable and profitable production of these crops worldwide. Differences in seedling resistance to S. sclerotiorum across 46 diverse cruciferous genotypes from 12 different species were assessed by comparing the extent of pathogenesis on inoculated cotyledons under controlled conditions. Selections of Brassica carinata, B. incana, B. juncea, B. napus, and B. napus introgressed with B. carinata, B. nigra, B. oleracea, B. rapa var. rosularis, B. rapa var. chinensis, B. tournefortii, Raphanus raphanistrum, R. sativus, and Sinapis arvensis were tested. The average size of lesions on cotyledons 48 h post inoculation varied from 0.8 to 7.3 mm. The three most resistant genotypes with the smallest lesions were all from B. oleracea (viz., B. oleracea var. italica ‘Prophet’ and B. oleracea var. capitata ‘Burton’ and ‘Beverly Hills’). Representatives of R. raphanistrum, S. arvensis, B. juncea, and B. carinata were the most susceptible to S. sclerotiorum, with the largest lesions. To our knowledge, this is the first report of high levels of resistance to S. sclerotiorum in B. oleracea at the cotyledon stage and also the first report of the host cotyledon reactions against S. sclerotiorum for all tested species except B. napus and B. juncea. The mean lesion size for B. napus introgressed with B. carinata was 5.6 mm, which is midway between the lesion size for the two parent species B. napus (5.1 mm) and B. carinata (5.8 mm). Separate genetic control for cotyledon versus mature plant resistance was demonstrated by the lack of correlation between lesion size from S. sclerotiorum on the cotyledon with the severity of disease initiated by stem inoculation or natural processes in a previous field test. On the most resistant genotypes, B. oleracea var. italica Prophet and var. capitata Burton, growth of S. sclerotiorum on the cotyledon surface prior to penetration was severely impeded, production of appressoria inhibited, and both cytoplasm shrinkage and protoplast extrusion in S. sclerotiorum hyphae prevalent. This is the first report of such resistant mechanisms in B. oleracea. Genotypes with cotyledon resistance identified in this study will be of great value not only in furthering our understanding of resistance mechanisms across different cruciferous species but also could be exploited for developing commercial crucifer cultivars with high-level resistance against S. sclerotiorum.

The initial aim of this study was to evaluate an effect of elevated CO2 concentration and air temperature (future climate) and O3 pollution on mono- and mixed-culture grown summer rape (Brassica napus L.) and wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.). The second task was to reveal the mechanisms of the shift in plants’ competitiveness in response to single and combined environmental changes. Plants were grown in mono- and mixed-cultures under current climate (CC) (400 μmol mol−1 of CO2, 21/14 °C day/night temperature) or future climate (FC) conditions (800 μmol mol−1 of CO2, 25/18 °C day/night temperature) with and without O3 treatment (180 μg m−3). Competition had relatively little effect on growth of both species at current climate, independent of O3 treatment. In contrast, competitive effect of both plant species considerably increased under FC, and especially FC + O3 conditions, when growth of mixed-culture rape reduced up to 48% and that of wild mustard up to 80%. The mechanisms of elevated competitiveness of rape under the future climate consisted of better antioxidative protection, particularly elevated total antioxidative capacity and activities of peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase. Whereas stronger oxidative damage, disproportionally high activities of H2O2 scavenging enzymes and lower pool of soluble sugars in mixed-culture wild mustard reduced its competitiveness under FC + O3 conditions. In conclusion it must be pointed out, that regardless improved competitive abilities of rape under FC and FC + O3 conditions, competition with wild mustard reduced growth, indicating increased weed-induced yield losses in the future climate, especially with concomitant intensification of O3 pollution.

Wild plants may play an important role in human nutrition and health and, among them, many are the leafy species. We hypothesized that the wild greens could be profitably grown as microgreens and baby greens, specialty products whose market is increasing. We compared three wild leafy species (Sanguisorba minor Scop., Sinapis arvensis L., and Taraxacum officinale Weber ex F. H. Wigg.) harvested at the microgreen and baby green stages. Seedlings were grown hydroponically in a half-strength Hoagland nutrient solution under controlled climatic conditions. At harvest, the yield was assessed, and chlorophylls, carotenoids, anthocyanins, phenolic index, nitrate, and mineral elements were measured in the two types of product. The potential contribution to human mineral intake was calculated, and the possible risk due to the presence of metals potentially detrimental for health was estimated. Results showed that micro/baby greens of the studied wild plants achieved competitive yields and could contribute to the dietary intake of macroelements, microelements, and non-nutrient bioactive compounds. On the other hand, the wild greens showed high amounts of nitrate and traces of some metals potentially detrimental for health, suggesting the need for caution in the use of wild species for producing microgreens and baby leaves.

Seeds are notoriously high in polyphenols and polysaccharides, which reduce RNA quality and yield, and interfere with downstream applications. We present simple modifications to a rapid RNA extraction protocol for use with seeds. The inclusion of polyethylene glycol in place of polyvinylpyrrolidone reduced polyphenol and polysaccharide contamination. In addition, replacing NaCl with KCl improved the RNA yield from Arabidopsis seeds still bound by mucilage. On extraction of Arabidopsis seed recovered from field soils clean RNA pellets with no accompanying gelatinous matrix (polysaccharide) were seen, with A260/230 ratios greater than 1.8 confirming the lack of polysaccharide carry-over. WhenBrassica oleraceaandSinapis arvensisseeds were extracted, 260/230 ratios greater than 1.8 were seen. RNA yields in excess of 10 µg per 100 mg seed suitable for RT-QPCR were obtained.

The basic units of ecological and evolutionary processes are individuals. Network studies aiming to infer mechanisms from complex systems, however, usually focus on interactions between species, not individuals. Accordingly, the structure and underlying mechanisms of individual-based interaction networks remain largely unknown. In a common garden, we recorded all interactions on flowers and leaves of 97 Sinapis arvensis individuals from seedling stage to fruit set and related interindividual differences in interactions to the plant individuals' phenotypes. The plant individuals significantly differed in their quantitative and qualitative interactions with arthropods on flowers and leaves. These differences remained stable over the entire season and thus were time-invariant. Variation in interacting arthropod communities could be explained by a pronounced intraspecific variability in flowering phenology, morphology and flower scent, and translated into variation in reproductive success. Interestingly, plant individuals with a similar composition of flower visitors were also visited by a similar assemblage of interaction partners at leaves. Our results show that the nonuniformity of plant species has pronounced effects in community ecology, potentially with implications for the persistence of communities and populations, and their ability to withstand environmental fluctuations.

Nowadays, public concern relating to ecological deleterious effects of heavy metals is on the rise. To evaluate the potential of Rapistrum rugosum and Sinapis arvensis in lead- contaminate phytoremediate, a pot culture experiment was conducted. The pots were filled by soil treated with different rates of leadoxide (PbO) including 0 (control), 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 mg Pb per 1 kg soil. Germinated seeds were sown. Surprisingly, with increasing concentration of Pb, dry weight of R. rugosum and S. arvensis did not decrease significantly. In both of species, the concentration of Pb was higher in roots than shoots. In general, S.arvensis was absorbed more Pb compared to R. rugosum. The results revealed high potential of R. rugosum and S. arvensis in withdrawing Pb from contaminated soil. For both species, a positive linear relation was observed between Pb concentration in soil and roots. However, linear relationship was not observed between Pb concentration in the soil and shoots. Although both species test had low ability in translocation Pb from roots to shoots but they showed high ability in uptake soil Pb by roots. Apparently, these plants are proper species for using in phytoremediation technology.

With transgenic crop development it is important to evaluate the potential for transgenes to escape into populations of wild, weedy relatives. Ethiopian mustard (Brassica carinata, BBCC) is easily transformed and is being investigated for uses from biodiesel fuels to biopharmaceuticals. However, little work has been done evaluating its ability to cross with relatives such as wild mustard (Sinapsis arvensis, SrSr), an abundant, cosmopolitan weedy relative. Here we conducted bidirectional crosses with Ethiopian mustard as a maternal parent in 997 crosses and paternal parent in 1,109 crosses. Hybrids were confirmed using flow cytometry and species-specific ITS molecular markers and indicate a high hybridization rate of 6.43 % between Ethiopian mustard (♀) and wild mustard (♂) and a lower, but not insignificant, hybridization rate of 0.01 % in the reverse direction. The majority of the hybrids were homoploid (BCSr) with less than 1 % of pollen production of their parents and low seed production (0.26 seeds/pollination) in crosses and backcrosses indicating a potential for advanced generation hybrids. The accession used had a significant effect on hybrid seed production with different accessions of Ethopian mustard varying in their production of hybrid offspring from 2.69 to 16.34 % and one accession of wild mustard siring almost twice as many hybrid offspring per flower as the other. One pentaploid (BBCCSr) and one hexaploid (BBCCSrSr) hybrid were produced and had higher pollen viability, though no and low seed production, respectively. As wild mustard is self-incompatible and the outcrossing rate of Ethiopian mustard has been estimated as 30 % potential for hybrid production in the wild appears to be high, though the hybridization rate found here represents a worst case scenario as it does not incorporate pre-pollination barriers. Hybridization in the wild needs to be directly evaluated as does the propensity of Ethiopian mustard to volunteer.

Background For most cruciferous plants, which are known as important crops and a number of weeds, hybrid breeding is hampered by the unavailability of a pollination control system. Male sterility induced by a gametocide can be useful for the utilization of plant heterosis. Results The gametocidal effect of sulfonylurea herbicide tribenuron-methyl was tested across seventeen cruciferous species or subspecies including Brassica juncea, B. carinata, B. oleracea ssp. capitata, B. oleracea ssp. acephala, B. rapa ssp. pekinensis, B. rapa ssp. chinensis, B. rapa ssp. parachinensis, B. nigra, Orychophragmus violaceus, Matthiola incana, Raphanus sativa, Sisymbrium altissimum, Eruca sativa, Sinapis alba, Sinapis arvensis, Capsella bursa-pastoris and Camelina sativa. The plants of 23 cultivars in these species or subspecies were foliar sprayed with 10 ml of 0.2 or 0.4 mg/L of tribenuron-methyl before the vacuolated microspore formed in the largest flower buds; the application was repeated ten to twelve days afterwards. Tribenuron-methyl exposure significantly changed the flowering phenology and reproductive function. The treated plants demonstrated a one to four day delay in flowering time and a shortened duration of flowering, as well as other slight phytotoxic effects including a reduction in plant height and floral organ size. Approximately 80% to 100% male sterility, which was estimated by both pollen staining and selfing seed-set rate, was induced in the plants. As a result, plants were rendered functionally able to out-cross, with an average 87% and 54% manually pollinated seed-set rate compared to the corresponding controls at the 0.2 mg/L and 0.4 mg/L doses, respectively. Conclusions The results suggested that male reproductive function was much more sensitive to tribenuron-methyl exposure than female function. This sulfonylurea herbicide has a promising use as the gametocide for hybrid production in cruciferous plants. In the years 1977-1980 phytosociological investigations were performed on field cultures in the Wyspowy Beskid, Sądecki Beskid, Żywiecki Beskid and Gorce mountains. In the collected material (481 phytosociological records) not only presence and degree of contamination with weeds, but also coefficients of coverage were calculated. Moreover weed species were classified to ecological-sociological groups (H i l b i g et al., 1962). The results indicate that both cereals and their roots were contaminated in the whole examined area mostly by weeds belonging to the following ecological-sociological groups: Sinapis arvensis, Tripleurospermum inodorum and Stachys palustris. Abundant was also in all localities Stellaria media and Agropyron repens.

Gene flow from acetolactate synthase-resistant (HR) Brassica juncea oilseed canola to related weed, Sinapis arvensis (density 1 plant/m2) was assessed in a 100 m2 field plot of HR B. juncea. Two HR F1 hybrids (H1 and H2) were detected among 109 951 seedlings screened with imazethapyr (hybridization frequency – 1.8 × 10−5). Hybridity was confirmed using flow cytometry, B. juncea-specific amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) markers, genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) and PCR-based detection of B. juncea's HR gene. H1 and H2 had 2n = 27 and 2n = 45 chromosomes, corresponding 3x (SrAB) and 5x (SrAABB) genomic structures and reduced male fertility, 3.2 and 16.6% pollen viability, respectively. H1 was self-incompatible, whereas H2 set seed when selfed (B. juncea trait). Selfed F2, F3 and F4 plants showed HR trait persistence and vigorous growth and high (80–100%) pollen fertility in 22% and 39% of the F2 and F3 plants, respectively. No progeny were obtained from F1, F2 or F3 hybrids × S. arvensis backcrosses, suggesting the likelihood of introgression of traits is low to negligible.

Olfactory ability is an element of fitness in many animals, guiding choices among alternatives such as mating partners or food. Ground beetles (Coleoptera; Carabidae), exhibit preferences for prey, and some species are well-known weed seed predators. We used olfactometer-based bioassays to determine if olfactory stimuli are associated with detection of Brassica napus L., Sinapis arvensis L., and Thlaspi arvense L. seeds by ground beetles characteristic of agroecosystems, and whether behavioural responses to seed odors depended on seed physiological state (imbibed or unimbibed). Imbibed B.napus seeds were preferred over other weed species by two of the three carabid species tested. Only A. littoralis responded significantly to unimbibed seeds of B. napus. Sensitivity to olfactory cues appeared to be highly specific as all carabid species discriminated between the olfactory cues of imbibed brassicaceous weed seeds, but did not discriminate between weed seeds that were unimbibed. Overall, our data suggest that depending on seed physiological state, odours can play an important role in the ability of carabids to find and recognize seeds of particular weed species.

Summary Although we know that alterations in crop density, crop spatial pattern and inclusion of more selective weed control can improve weed suppression for organic growers, it is unknown whether these result in changes to the weed seedbank that increase cropping system profitability over time. Data collected from field trials conducted in 2009 and 2010 in Maine, USA, comparing regional grower practices (Standard) with management that aimed to (i) facilitate better physical weed control through the use of wide row spacing and inter-row cultivation (Wide) or (ii) enhance crop–weed competition through increased seeding rate and narrow inter-row spacing (Narrow HD), were used to construct a matrix population model with an economic sub-model. Using field measurements of grain yield and weed survival and fecundity, we investigated the lasting implications of employing alternative organic spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) production practices on Sinapis arvensis population dynamics. In most scenarios, the model indicated that regional production practices were not sufficient to prevent an increase in the weed seedbank, even with excellent weed control. The two alternative methods, on the other hand, were able to limit weed population growth when initial densities were low or cultivation efficacy was >80%. Due to higher seed costs in the Narrow HD system, net returns were still lower after 10 years of simulation in this system compared with wide rows with cultivation, despite a lower weed seedbank.

Analysis of gene flow between Brassica napus L. and its sexually compatible relatives that could be found in the wild in Slovenia was performed by microsatellite analysis using fifteen selected primer pairs. Genotypes included in the study were obtained from the field survey of sexually compatible relatives of B. napus in natural habitats around Slovenia and from reference collections. Two different wild species of all the presented sexually compatible relatives of B. napus were found in Slovenia, B. rapa and Sinapis arvensis. The reference genotypes included varieties and wild forms from internal collections as marketable seeds or from gene banks. Reference genotypes were represented by the following species and subspecies: B. napus ssp. napobrassica, B. napus ssp. napus, B. nigra, B. oleracea, B. rapa ssp. oleifera, Diplotaxis muralis; D. tenuifolia, Raphanus raphanistrum, R. sativus, R. sativus var. oleiformis, Rapistrum rugosum, S. alba and S. arvensis. Estimation of gene flow described by average number of migrants was 0.72 followed by 0.20 migrants. Due to the observed gene migrations, genetic drift and selection, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was not met. The study on weed infestation of root crops in different soils in the protective zone of Roztocze National Park was conducted in the years 1991-1995. As many as 240 phytosociological records, made with the use of Braun-Blanquet method, were taken in potato and sugar beet fields. The number of weed species in sugar beet and potato in the area depended on the soil and type of root crop. In the same environment conditions. the iiuinber of weed species was higher in potato than in sugar beet. The most difficult weed species iii all types of soil were: Chenopodium album, Stellaria media and Convolvulus arvensis. Podsolic soils were highly infested by two acidophylic species: Spergula arvensis and Raphanus raphanistum. Potato in loess soil and brown soil made of loamy sands were highly infested by Echinochloa crus-galli, Equisetum arvense and Galinsoga parviflora. Root crop plantations in brown soils formed from gaizes of granulometric loam texture and limestone soils were infested by: Galium aparine, Sonchus arvensis, Sinapis arvensis and Veronica persica.

Forty leaf samples were collected from symptomatic wild plants grown in natural ecosystems in northeast of Tehran. These plant samples were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using broad-spectrum potyvirus antibodies. Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) was identified in four ELISA-positive samples by sequencing of their 3′ end of genomes and subsequently by specific ELISA tests. This study reports Arctium lappa and Sinapis arvensis as new hosts for TuMV in Iran. The results also seem to indicate the possible presence of a new genogroup of the virus.

Période 2000-2012. http://prodinra.inra.fr/record/256699; To determine to what extent wild species related to crops might serve as refuges for insect pests and their natural enemies, we compared the performance of the aphid Myzus persicae and its endoparasitoid Diaeretiella rapae on one cultivar of Brassica napus and Brassica oleracea, two wild species Brassica nigra and Sinapis arvensis, and one cultivar of Solanum lycopersicum. These species differ in traits associated with plant defences that may have an impact on the herbivore and its parasitoid. In contrast to our initial hypothesis, aphid population growth rate was significantly smaller on B. napus than on the other Brassicaceae species. Similarly, the performance of the parasitoid was affected by the host plant on which the aphid was feeding. However, aphid and parasitoid performance was not correlated. Thus, in temporally changing landscapes, pests and natural enemies may utilize crops and wild-related host species with contrasting impacts on their fitness.

The ameliorating effects of different inorganic materials were investigated on a soil originating from a zinc smelter dumping site contaminated by toxic metals. Wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.) was used as a test plant. The soil was amended with different doses of mining sludge, Perferric Red Latosol (LVj), steel shots, cyclonic ash, silifertil, and superphosphate. The most effective amendments improved plant growth with 45% and reduced metal uptake by over 70% in comparison to untreated soil. Reductions in availability as estimated by BaCl2-extractable metals reached up to 90% for Zn and 65% for Cd as compared to unamended soil. These reductions were associated with lower shoot and root metal contents. Shoot Zn content was reduced from 1,369 microg g(-1) in plants grown on untreated soil to 377 microg g(-1) when grown on cyclonic ash amended soil while Cd decreased from 267 to 44 microg g(-1) in steel shots amended soil. Superphosphate addition had no ameliorating effect. On the contrary, it increased BaCl2-extractable amounts of Zn. Considering all parameters we determined, steel shots, cyclonic ash and silifertil are the most promising for remediating metal contaminated soil in the tropics. Further studies evaluating impacts, cost-effectiveness and durability of effects will be conducted.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY Traditional taxonomy and nomenclature of Brassiceae (Brassicaceae) species do not reflect their phylogeny. Revision of the species and generic limits supported by extensive molecular data seems crucial. METHODS AND RESULTS Genome-specific polymorphisms extracted from non-coding and coding sequences were used to develop 14 sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) markers specific for the Brassica B genome. These SCARs were verified against 77 accessions of six U-triangle Brassica species and used to screen 23 accessions of seven wild Brassiceae species to test for their cross-species amplification. SCARs were found in all B-genome Brassica species and also in Sinapis arvensis. CONCLUSIONS SCAR markers can be employed for discerning B-genome chromosomes in Brassica species and S. arvensis to reliably identify B-genome species and their natural hybrids. The combined molecular evidence supports the suggestion to revise the generic limits of Brassica and Sinapis.

The wild mustard (Brassica juncea L.), an invasive weed of winter crops in Brazil, was evaluated for glucosinolate content of its plant tissues and nematicidal activity of its dry leaf meal (LM), whole seed meal (WSM) and hexane defatted seed meal (DSM) against Meloidogyne incognita on tomato plants. Sinigrin was the major glucosinolate in LM, WSM and DSM, occurring at concentration of 0.11, 12.2 and 21.9 mg/gdw, respectively. Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) was the major degradation product and its concentration was highest in DSM followed by WSM and LM. The number of galls, egg masses and eggs on tomato plants was reduced by over 90% by amending soil with 1.6% LM, 0.2% WSM, or 0.05% DSM. Exposure to the volatiles from the amended soils reduced egg eclosion. The soil amendment with LM, WSM and DSM killed the second stage juveniles of M. javanica, M. enterolobii (=M. mayaguensis) and Heterodera glycines. The efficacy of the LM, WSM and DSM for nematode suppression was related to the amount of AITC released in soil.

This study was conducted to improve our understanding of how earthworms and microorganisms interact in the decomposition of litter of low quality (high C : N ratio) grown under elevated atmospheric [CO2]. A microcosm approach was used to investigate the influence of endogeic earthworm (Aporrectodea caliginosa Savigny) activity on the decomposition of senescent Charlock mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.) litter produced under ambient and elevated [CO2]. Earthworms and microorganisms were exposed to litter which had changed in quality (C : N ratio) while growing under elevated [CO2]. After 50 d of incubation in microcosms, C mineralization (CO2 production) in the treatment with elevated-[CO2] litter was significantly lower in comparison to the ambient-[CO2] litter treatment. The input of Charlock mustard litter into the soil generally induced N immobilization and reduced N2O-emission rates from soil. Earthworm activity enhanced CO2 production, but there was no relationship to litter quality. Although earthworm biomass was not affected by the lower quality of the elevated-[CO2] litter, soil microbial biomass (Cmic, Nmic) was significantly decreased. Earthworms reduced Cmic and fungal biomass, the latter only in treatments without litter. Our study clearly showed that A. caliginosa used the litter grown under different [CO2] independent of its quality and that their effect on the litter-decomposition process was also independent of litter quality. Soil microorganisms were shown to negatively react to small changes in Charlock mustard litter quality; therefore we expect that microbially mediated C and N cycling may change under future atmospheric [CO2].

Conservative agriculture includes a range of management strategies with low energy inputs such as no-tillage, minimum tillage, and low application of fertilizers. Weed flora in arable fields is strictly affected by agronomic practices such as tillage and fertilization management. This study was conducted seven years after the beginning of a long-term&mdash, durum wheat&ndash, faba bean&mdash, rotation. It analyzes the combined effects on the soil seed bank of three different tillage systems (conservative, reduced, and conventional tillage) and two levels of nitrogen fertilization. The effects were investigated both using stepwise discriminant analysis and analysis of variance in order to find statistical differences among main factors and their interactions. The seed bank of Conyza canadensis, Papaver rhoeas, Solanum nigrum, Fallopia convolvulus, and Fumaria officinalis was higher in conservative or reduced tillage plots. The magnitude of the response to nitrogen supply varied among weed species. Conyza canadensis seemed to be favored by low nitrogen supply, whereas Sinapis arvensis by higher doses of nitrogen. Anagallis arvensis showed the lowest seed bank in conventionally tilled plots, without distinction of nitrogen supply. The results suggest that different tillage systems and, to a lesser extent, different nitrogen supply, produce changes in the seed bank size and composition, along the soil profile.

Summary To assess the effects of timing and frequency of weed harrowing on weed abundance and crop yield, different pre- and post-emergence weed harrowing sequences were applied to spring cereals and peas in field experiments performed during 2003 and 2004 in Sweden. Post-emergence harrowing was performed at crop growth stages 2–3 and 5–6 true leaves respectively. The best weed control was obtained by a combination of preand post-emergence harrowing, but these treatments also caused yield losses of 12–14% in spring cereals, while no yield losses were observed in peas. Preemergence weed harrowing treatments alone or combined with weed harrowing shortly after crop emergence proved to be most effective against the early emerging annual weed species Sinapis arvensis and Galeopsis spp. Post-emergence harrowing alone in peas had no effect on S. arvensis. The late emerging annual weed species Chenopodium album and Polygonum lapathifolium were most effectively controlled when pre-emergence weed harrowing was combined with one or two weed harrowing treatments after crop emergence.

Levels of sinalbin (4-hydroxybenzylglucosinolate) and 28 other glucosinolates were determined in leaves and roots of 20 species that were either phylogenetically close to Sinapis alba, Sinapis arvensis, or Sinapis pubescens (tribe Brassiceae, Brassicaceae), or were expected to contain arylalkyl nitrilase activity. Comparison with a molecular phylogenetic tree based on ITS DNA sequences identified two separate occurrences of sinalbin. The first in a group of species related to S. alba (including members of the genera Coincya and Kremeriella); and the second in S. arvensis, nested among sinalbin deficient species. Significant 4-hydroxyphenylacetonitrile degrading enzyme activity was found in both S. alba and S. arvensis, but in S. alba the major product was the corresponding carboxylic acid, while in S. arvensis the major product was the amide. Both investigated enzyme activities, nitrilase and nitrile hydratase, were specific, accepting only certain arylacetonitriles such as 4-hydroxy and 4-methoxyphenylacetonitrile. Only the S. alba enzyme required an oxygen in para position of the substrate, as found in sinalbin. Indole-3-acetonitrile, arylcyanides, and arylpropionitriles were poor substrates. The nitrilase activity of S. alba was quantitatively comparable to that reported in the monocot Sorghum bicolor (believed to be involved in cyanogenic glycoside metabolism). Glucosinolates derived from methionine were found in all Sinapis clades. Glucosinolate patterns suggested a complex evolution of glucosinolates in the investigated species, with several apparent examples of abrupt changes in glucosinolate profiles including chain length variation and appearance of glucosinolates derived from branched-chain amino acids. NMR data for desulfated homosinalbin, 9-methylsulphonylnonylglucosinolate, 3-methylpentylglucosinolate and related glucosinolates are reported, and a facultative connection between sinalbin and specific nitrilases is suggested.

Plants of wild species Sinapis arvensis L . — (wild mustard) with severe mosaic symptoms were established all around different farm crops in Sofia valley and even in the Sofia suburbs in 2006. Two viruses were identified by ELISA method (DAS-ELISA) and by the indicator method. Those were the virus of the genus Caulimovirus , family Caulimoviridae — Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) and a virus of the genus Potyvirus , family Potyviridae — Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV). Both viruses were found in wild mustard plants, often in mixed infection. Turnip yellow mosaic virus (TYMV) wasn’t determined in wild mustard plants. CaMV was identified by the infection of its diagnostic indicator species Brassica oleracea var. botrytis (cv. Snowball) — cauliflower. Besides cauliflower, TuMV was also identified in cabbage — Brassica oleracea var. capitata, cv.
