Marine microplastic pollution is a major environmental challenge that threatens marine ecosystems and human health. Several models have been used to calculate and predict the theoretical amount of plastic waste discharged into the sea by coastal countries. Unlike earlier theoretical models of source discharge, we used the method of data normalisation to focus on the actual distribution of microplastics and their potential ecological risk in offshore surface waters. Our findings indicate that the average normalised abundance of microplastics in near-shore region of Bohai Sea was greater than the average normalised abundance of microplastics in the seas near the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration and the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration. Moreover, the average amount of plastic waste discharged from terrestrial sources to the ocean per kilometre exhibited the following order: Bohai Rim urban agglomeration (150.90) (tonnes km -1 ) < the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration (274.30) (tonnes km -1 ) < Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration (577.44) (tonnes km -1 ). Further, the average microplastics abundance in offshore areas of different countries and the amount of plastic discharged per kilometre of the coastline were significantly negatively correlated, implying that microplastics were not necessarily abundant in coastal areas where large amounts of plastic are discharged into the sea. Hydrodynamic conditions had the greatest influence on the distribution of microplastics in offshore surface waters. The transport of nutrient salts from terrestrial areas to offshore waters was also influenced by hydrodynamics, with enrichment patterns in offshore areas exhibiting similar to those of microplastics. Therefore, when the offshore microplastic accumulation area overlapped with the nutrient salt enrichment zone, the health risk associated with the consumption of edible fish from offshore communities increased. This study investigated the distribution and characteristics of microplastics in surface sediments of the Gulf of Thailand (GoT), and discussed the correlation between sediment grain size and microplastic content. The results indicate the abundance of microplastics is 150.4 ± 86.2 pieces/kg dry weight, representing a medium microplastic pollution level compared to other sea areas. Small microplastics (0.5-1 mm) take up >70% of total microplastic numbers. Fibrous microplastics are the dominant component of microplastics. According to micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, rayon (37%) and polyester (PES: 16%) are the most typical polymer types found in sediments. The results imply that secondary microplastics are the dominant pollutant, while fibrous microplastics are mainly from municipal sewage discharge. We also find that inconspicuous correlation between grain size and microplastics, which is caused by the multi-sources and different flow field. Primary microplastics are mostly produced as part of the daily plastic product use. The emission process is often invisible but poses potential ecological hazards. Thus, primary microplastics deserve public attention. Due to China's huge population base and its rapid economic development, primary microplastics emissions are of both regional and global significance. This study is the first to establish the emission inventory of primary microplastics in mainland China. It was estimated that the primary microplastic waste from mainland China amounts to 737.29 Gg, and one-sixth of this amount entered the aquatic environment in 2015. The highest proportion of this waste was attributable to tire dust and synthetic fiber, accounting for 53.91% and 28.77% of the total respectively, in mainland China. The primary microplastics emissions mainly depend on the population, followed by the level of economic development. It was roughly estimated that 538 g of microplastics is produced by each person in China. At the grid scale, the spatial difference in the total primary microplastics emissions in mainland China primarily depends on the population density distribution and transportation network. We studied the entire life cycle of several sources of microplastics, from production to discharge into the aquatic environment. We suggested different control measures under different nodes. Increasing microplastics treatment in sewage treatment plants should be a short-term viable way to achieve some measure of reduction in their entry to the environment in mainland China. At present, the study of microplastic sources is in a relatively preliminary stage due to the complexity of microplastic features in the environment. Based on a literature review, we developed a source-specific classification system for the quantitative analysis of microplastic sources. The classification system includes ten types of microplastics based on morphology and composition and can identify their main sources and the associated probabilities. To reflect the complexity of types and sources in the regional combination of microplastics, we first propose a microplastic diversity index (D 1-D '(MP)). We use the South China Sea as an example to carry out quantitative source analysis and calculate the diversity index. Eight types of microplastics were found, mainly consisting of maritime coatings (type "Gran&#95;coat") (33.0%) and synthetic fibers (type "Fib&#95;thin") (29.6%). We also found that the diversity increased with offshore distance. In addition, we partitioned surface microplastics globally according to a two-dimensional microplastic abundance-diversity index. We believe that these indicators can effectively reflect pollution status and ultimately lead to different types of control measures. In the future, additional indicators for the characterization of microplastics must be included in the classification system to establish a one-to-one source analysis system for microplastic characteristics and source apportionment. Despite the rapid construction of offshore wind farms, the available information regarding the risks of this type of development in terms of emerging pollutants, particularly microplastics, is scarce. In this study, we quantified the level of microplastic pollution at an offshore wind farm in the Yellow Sea, China, in 2016. The abundance of microplastics was 0.330 ± 0.278 items/m 3 in the surface water and 2.58 ± 1.14 items/g (dry) in the sediment. To the best of our knowledge, the level of microplastic pollution in our study area was slightly higher than that in coastal areas around the world. The microplastics detected in the surface waters and sediments were mainly fibrous (75.3% and 68.7%, respectively) and consisted of some granules and films. The microplastics in the samples might originate from garments or ropes via wastewater discharge. The abundance of plastic in the water and sediment samples collected from the wind farm area was lower than that in the samples collected from outside the wind farm area. The anthropogenic hydrodynamic effect was the main factor affecting the local distribution of microplastics. The presence of a wind farm could increase the bed shear stress during ebb tide, disturbing the bed sediment, facilitating its initiation and transport, and ultimately increasing the ease of washing away the microplastics adhered to the sediment. Microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment, eventually becoming part of the geological record as 'technofossils'. However, research on the chronological characteristics of microplastics remains limited. This study reviewed dating methods, microplastic abundance, and microplastic polymer type in sedimentary cores globally. Furthermore, the 'evolution' of plastic types was compiled in sequence, and a microplastic chronological sequence in the sedimentary record was established. This microplastics chronological sequence was applied to 39 published cores with microplastic polymer analysis. The sediment age ranges determined by microplastic type were found to correspond to the published ages, indicating that microplastics could be useful for dating sedimentary cores on a centennial scale. Furthermore, good preservation and limited mobility of microplastics in burial records make microplastic dating an effective supplementary dating method for determining ages of Anthropocene sediments. As prime coastal recreational areas, beaches attract an increasing number of users worldwide. However, current studies have shown that beaches are subject to plastic pollution, one of the most significant global environmental threats. Considering the health of tourists and ecological environmental management of beaches, microplastics on recreational beaches are urgently being studied. This paper first focused on microplastics on the recreational beaches of Haichow Bay, which is located on the central coast of China and faces the Yellow Sea. The microplastic pollution level, occurrence, and distribution were investigated. Our study demonstrated that microplastics were consistently found on all studied beaches, which emphasized their extensive distribution throughout recreational beaches. The average microplastic abundance was 106.50 ± 34.41 items/kg, demonstrating that the microplastic pollution level on the studied beaches tended to be in the middle-to-low position compared with previous studies. In total, eight colors were found, more than 90% of microplastics were less than 1 mm in size, and fiber and fragments were the dominant shapes. Resort beaches contained the highest number of microplastics, indicating that the microplastic pollution level on recreational beaches was directly related to the tourism intensity. Five types of plastic were found in the samples, i.e., polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), PS (polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and nylon. Land inputs were the main source of pollution. This study provided baseline information on microplastic pollution that can be used for effective and comprehensive management of recreational beaches and suggests that the management of plastic use and recycling on beaches should be integrated into China's'coastal zone management practices.
