Graphical abstract A series of truxene-containing alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complexes has been synthesized, which are found to show two-photon absorption and two-photon induced luminescence properties. A high two-photon absorption cross-section has been achieved for the trinuclear platinum(II) complex, which might provide insights into the future design of related complexes with non-linear optical properties. Abstract A series of truxene-containing alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complexes has been designed and synthesized, with their UV–vis absorption and emission properties determined. The two-photon absorption and two-photon induced luminescence properties for selected complexes have also been evaluated. More interestingly, an enhancement in the two-photon absorption cross-section has been achieved and demonstrated by increasing the number of platinum(II) terpyridine moieties in the molecular design.
