The Balkans are considered a major glacial refugium where flora and fauna survived glacial periods and repopulated the rest of Europe during interglacials. While it is also thought to have harboured Pleistocene human populations, evidence linking human activity, paleoenvironmental indicators and a secure temporal placement to glacial periods is scant. Here, we present the first intra-tooth multi-isotope analysis for the European straight-tusked elephant Palaeoloxodon antiquus, on an adult male individual excavated in association with lithic artefacts at the MIS 12 site Marathousa 1 (Megalopolis basin, Greece). The studied find also exhibits anthropogenic modifications, providing direct evidence of hominin presence. We employed strontium, carbon and oxygen isotope analysis on enamel bioapatite to investigate its foraging and mobility behaviour, using a sequential sampling strategy along the tooth growth axis of the third upper molar, to assess ecological changes during the last decade of life. We found a geographically restricted range, in a C3-dominated open woodland environment, and relatively stable conditions over the examined timeframe. Our results show that, despite the severity of the MIS 12 glacial, the Megalopolis basin sustained a mesic habitat, sufficient plant cover and limited seasonal fluctuations in resource availability, pointing to its role as a glacial refugium for both fauna and hominins. The Palaeolithic record of Greece remains highly fragmented and discontinuous in both space and time. Nevertheless, new surveys and excavations, along with the revisiting of known sites or old collections, and the conduction of lithic and faunal laboratory analyses, have altogether enriched the Greek Palaeolithic dataset with important new evidence and novel interpretations. The goal of this paper is threefold: 1) to critically review the most important aspects of the Greek Pleistocene archaeological record, from the Lower to the Upper Palaeolithic; 2) to provide a synthesis of current knowledge about the Palaeolithic of Greece and in the framework of broader discussions in human evolution research; and 3) to put in prospect the Greek record by addressing a research agenda for the future. The review of the evidence shows that Palaeolithic research in Greece has expanded its focus not only geographically but also temporally: it now includes investigations at previously under-studied areas, such as the insular settings of the Aegean and Ionian Seas, as well as formerly overlooked targets, such as Lower Palaeolithic open-air sites. The synthesis and discussion which follows offers a state-of-the-art perspective on how the primary Palaeolithic data can be assessed within local or regional geomorphic, paleoenvironmental and chronological contexts; here, our focus is on spatio-temporal discontinuities, trends in subsistence strategies and lithic technology, as well as potentially emerging biogeographical patterns. Finally, we highlight the complex topography and mosaic landscapes of the Greek peninsula in order to address two major themes for a future research agenda: the potential role of Greece as a glacial refugium, and how the Greek record could contribute to our knowledge of early hominin mobility patterns. Two new vertebrate fossiliferous localities from the Pleistocene of the Mygdonia Basin (Macedonia, Greece), Tsiotra Vryssi (TSR) and Platanochori-1 (PLN), are presented in this article. TSR belongs to the Gerakarou Formation and its preliminary faunal list includes the corvid Corvus pliocaenus , the hyaenid Pachycrocuta brevirostris , the canid Canis etruscus , the rhinoceros Stephanorhinus sp., two species of Equus , the bovid Bison sp., the cervid Metacervocerus rhenanus and the giraffid Palaeotragus sp. PLN belongs to the Platanochori Formation (overlying Gerakarou Formation) and its fauna includes the following taxa: Stephanorhinus hundsheimensis , Equus apolloniensis , Bison sp. and Pontoceros ambiguus . The preliminary comparison of these faunal assemblages with the already known localities from the Mygdonia Basin and the wider region, combined with the geological data, suggest a Late Villafranchian age for TSR, chronologically intermediate between the localities Gerakarou-1 and Apollonia-1, while the fauna from PLN is indicative of a Latest Villafranchian age, similar to that of Apollonia-1. Abstract: In the debate about hominin dispersals, Greece is expected to have been among the core areas for the peopling of Eurasia, serving as a ‘refugium’ and source region for (re)colonizations. Yet, its early Pleistocene record is still scarce, forming a conspicuous ‘gap’ in the early human geography of the Mediterranean. Here we investigate this gap and provide for the first time a synthesis of the Lower Palaeolithic record of Greece. Our study adopts a geoarchaeological approach to explain the current status of the record and argues that the ‘absence of evidence’ should be understood as the result of the biasing effects of erosional geomorphic processes and not as an indication of a former absence of hominins. In this line, the potential for archaeological preservation and recovery is assessed as a function of landscape dynamics. Climatic seasonality, tectonic activity, high relief and marine inundations have altogether contributed to significant reworking and/or total loss of archaeological sites: in spatial terms, only about 2–5% of the Lower Palaeolithic record of Greece may have survived up to the present. On the other hand, we interpret recent geological data, which show that half of the Aegean Sea would have been subaerially exposed for most of the early Pleistocene. Our results emphasize the potentially central role of the Aegean region in hominin dispersals, both as a biogeographical landbridge and as a highly productive landscape for occupation. This conclusion opens up new prospects for future fieldwork in an area that was hitherto essentially neglected. Finally, in showing how geomorphic processes bias site distribution patterns, the results and methodological perspective developed here can be seen as having implications that are wider than the geographical limits of the Greek Peninsula: they are pertinent to the investigation and interpretation of the early Pleistocene archaeological records in the highly dynamic landscapes of southern Europe – if not in even broader scales.
