Due to their wide distribution and availability, plant leaves can be considered interesting candidates as biomonitoring substrates for the evaluation of atmospheric pollution. In addition, some species can also retain historical information, for example, related to environmental pollution, due to their leaf class age. In this study, the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Abies holophylla and Pinus tabuliformis needle samples in the function of their class age has been investigated to obtain information regarding the degradation constant for each PAH under investigation (α values ranging from 0.173 to 1.870) and to evaluate the possibility to correlate the presence of PAHs in needles with some important pollution environmental factors. Considering air pollutant variables registered in Jilin Province, interesting correlations (at 95% confidence level) have been found between coal consumption per year and anthracene contents in needles, while fluorene, phenanthrene, and anthracene results correlated with coal consumption. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the total PAH concentration in needles, for both species, increased with their age (from 804 to 3604 ng g -1 dry weight), showing a general tendency to accumulate these substances through years. PAH degradation rates increased instead with molecular complexity. This study could be considered a first trial to obtain historical environmental information by pine needles biomonitoring., (© 2021. This study developed a traceless clean-up method by combining solid phase extraction (SPE) with gas purge-microsyringe extraction (GP-MSE) to purify sample extracts for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in plant leaves. SPE exhibited good purification performance for the removal of polar lipids, while the GP-MSE technique effectively eliminated less-volatile lipids hence realizing zero damage to the instrument, and significantly improved the peak tailings. After ultrasonic extraction, the combined two-step clean-up procedure successfully removed over 99% of lipids from nineteen types of tree leaves, and PAHs in tree leaves were determined by GC-MS. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for intra-day (n = 3) and inter-day (n = 3) analyses of PAHs in spiked willow samples were in the range of 0.8%-12.1% and 4.7%-15.3%, respectively. The recoveries of PAHs from spiked willow extracts ranged from 74 to 90%, with an average of 86%. The method detection limit (MDL) of PAHs in tree leaves ranged from 0.1 to 4.9 ng g -1 dry weight. In conclusion, the clean-up method in this study realized the analysis of PAHs in plant leaves with high accuracy, sensitivity and reproducibility. Most importantly, the two-step purification method significantly minimizes damage to the GC-MS system particularly to the column and ion source, which is beneficial to ensure continuous analysis of a large number of samples with good performance.

A novel cleanup technique termed as gas purge-microsyringe extraction (GP-MSE) was evaluated and applied for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) determination in road dust samples. A total of 68 road dust samples covering almost the entire Shanghai area were analyzed for 16 priority PAHs using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results indicate that the total PAH concentrations over the investigated sites ranged from 1.04μg/g to 134.02μg/g dw with an average of 13.84μg/g. High-molecular-weight compounds (4-6 rings PAHs) were significantly dominant in the total mass of PAHs, and accounted for 77.85% to 93.62%. Diagnostic ratio analysis showed that the road dust PAHs were mainly from the mixture of petroleum and biomass/coal combustions. Principal component analysis in conjunction with multiple linear regression indicated that the two major origins of road dust PAHs were vehicular emissions and biomass/fossil fuel combustions, which contributed 66.7% and 18.8% to the total road dust PAH burden, respectively. The concentration of benzo[a]pyrene equivalent (BaPeq) varied from 0.16μg/g to 24.47μg/g. The six highly carcinogenic PAH species (benz(a)anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, dibenz(a,h)anthracene, and indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene) accounted for 98.57% of the total BaPeq concentration. The Changbai (also known as "Baekdu") Mountain, on the border between China and North Korea, is the highest mountain (2750 m) in northeastern China. Recently, this mountain region has experienced a dramatic increase in air pollution, not only because of increasing volumes of tourism-derived traffic but also because of the long-range transport of polluted westerly winds passing through major industrial and urban cities in the eastern region of China. To assess the relative importance of the two sources of pollution, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as model substances were determined in the mountain soil. A total of 32 soil samples were collected from different sides of the mountain at different latitudes between July and August of 2009. The ∑PAH concentrations were within the range 38.5-190.1 ng g(-1) on the northern side, 117.7-443.6 ng g(-1) on the southern side, and 75.3-437.3 ng g(-1) on the western side. A progressive increase in the level of ∑PAHs with latitude was observed on the southern and western sides that face the westerly wind with abundant precipitation. However, a similar concentration gradient was not observed on the northern side that receives less rain and is on the leeward direction of the wind. The high-molecular-weight PAH compounds were predominant in the soils on the southern and western sides, while low-molecular-weight PAHs dominated the northern side soils. In this work, two different extraction procedures for the analysis of different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water by microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS) have been compared in terms of sensitivity, reliability and time of analysis. The first method, called "draw-eject", consists of a sequence of cycles of aspirations and injections in the same vial; the second one, called "extract-discard", consists of a similar cycle sequence, but the aspired sample in this case is discarded into waste. The relevant partition equilibriums and extraction rates have been calculated by multivariate regression from the data obtained after MEPS gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (MEPS-GC-MS) analysis of 16 PAHs from water samples. Partitioning parameters for a priori prediction of solute sorption equilibrium, recoveries and preconcentration effects in aqueous and solvent systems have been calculated and compared for the two extraction procedures. Finally, real samples from sea, agricultural irrigation wells, streams and tap water were analyzed. Detection (S/N≥3) and quantification (S/N≥10) limits were calculated for the extraction processes. Under the experimental conditions used for the "draw-eject" procedure, these values were in the range 0.5-2 ng L(-1) and 1.6-6.2 ng L(-1), while for the "extract-discard" procedure they ranged from 0.2 to 0.8 ng L(-1) and from 0.8 to 2.0 ng L(-1), respectively., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Sample pretreatment before chromatographic analysis is the most time consuming and error prone part of analytical procedures, yet it is a key factor in the final success of the analysis. A quantitative and fast liquid phase microextraction technique termed as gas purge microsyringe extraction (GP-MSE) has been developed for simultaneous direct gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of volatile and semivolatile chemicals without cleanup process. Use of a gas flowing system, temperature control and a conventional microsyringe greatly increased the surface area of the liquid phase micro solvent, and led to quantitative recoveries of both volatile and semivolatile chemicals within short extraction time of only 2 min. Recoveries of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and alkylphenols (APs) determined were 85-107%, and reproducibility was between 2.8% and 8.5%. In particular, the technique shows high sensitivity for semivolatile chemicals which is difficult to achieve in other sample pretreatment techniques such as headspace-liquid phase microextraction. The variables affecting extraction efficiency such as gas flow rate, extraction time, extracting solvent type, temperature of sample and extracting solvent were investigated. Finally, the technique was evaluated to determine PAHs, APs and OCPs from plant and soil samples. The experimental results demonstrated that the technique is economic, sensitive to both volatile and semivolatile chemicals, is fast, simple to operate, and allows quantitative extraction. Background, Aim and Scope: The climatic characteristic is a major parameter affecting on the distribution variation of organic pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The Tumen River is located in Northeastern of China. The winter era lasts for more than 5 months in a year, and the river water was frozen and covered by ice phase. Coal combustion is an essential heating source in the Tumen River Basin. The objective of this research is to study ice phase effect on the seasonal variation of PAHs in the Tumen River environment., Materials and Methods: Samples were collected from 13 sites along the River in March, July, October, and December of 2008. In addition, the ice sample, under ice water and air particulate were also collected in winter. The samples were analyzed for 16 PAHs (naphthalene, acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, beazo[a]anthene, chrysene, beazo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene, indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene, dibenz(a,h)anthracene, and benzo(ghi)perylene). The compounds were extracted from the water samples and solid samples using LLE and Soxhlet extraction technique, respectively, and it is determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry., Results and Discussion: Among 16 PAHs, fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene were found to be present in high concentrations and at high detection frequencies. The total concentration of PAHs in the water, particulate, sediment and ice phase ranged from 35.1-1.05 x 10(3) ng L(-1), 25.4-817 ng L(-1), 117-562 ng g(-1)and 62.8-136 ng g(-1), respectively. The levels of PAHs were generally higher in spring than other seasons. The ice phase in winter acts like a major reservoir of the pollutants and it is major contributor on the seasonal variation of PAHs in Tumen River. The PAHs found in water, particulate, and sediment in the Tumen River were possibly derived from similar pollution sources a proposition based on the compositions and isomer ratios of PAHs., Conclusions: The distribution of PAHs was showed clear seasonal variation in the Tumen River environment, the ice phase and air pollution look like an important factor affecting on the seasonal variation., Recommendations and Perspectives: The ice phase as an important factor affecting on the seasonal variation of PAHs in Tumen River environment. Further studies regarding the effects of air pollution on the river and the mechanisms of migration and transformation of them in the environment are currently being conducted in our laboratory.

Studies on seasonal distribution characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Salix matsudana leaves covering its annual life cycle were carried out in order to evaluate plant leaf response sensitivity to air pollution. Salix matsudana leaves were collected throughout different development phases of plant leaf inclusive of bud break to fallen leaves, covering from spring (May) to autumn (November). Simultaneously, particle and gas samples were collected using a high volume air sampler. Seven different PAHs were determined simultaneously in these samples. The temperature dependence of the partitioning of PAHs in air and plant leaves was investigated and the results were incorporated into a mathematical model. The measured plant/air partition coefficients have been found to be exponentially proportional to the reciprocal temperature, in agreement with theoretical expectations. Furthermore, in order to define the influence of different parameters on PAH adsorption on plant leaves, area and lipid leaf content were also measured. Results demonstrated that temperature plays a very important role in PAHs partitioning and that this value should be carefully considered during sampling, in order to obtain the best correlation between PAHs concentration in air and leaves. Abstract: Monitoring of atmospheric organic pollutants is usually conducted by means of active or passive air samplers. In this study, we developed a simple, conventional, economic and fast sampling method for volatile and semivolatile compounds that is based on a liquid-phase organic solvent. Laboratory tests showed the feasibility of the method, and the major parameters of the method, such as temperature, organic solvent, carrier gas and air flow rate, were preliminarily optimized. For 16 kinds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the recovery, relative standard deviation and detection limit were ranged from 87.0 to 104.4%, 2.6 to 15.6% and 0.08 to 0.45 ng mL−1, respectively. Field application of the new method also showed good sampling efficiency for PAHs in real air samples, comparable to the results with an XAD-2 resin-based method. The similarity was closed to 1, suggesting that the new method is suitable for sampling of volatile and semivolatile organic pollutants in air and has great potential for air-pollution monitoring. Abstract: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in air particulates, ice particulates, snow particulates and river water samples collected during December 2008 to February 2010 in Tumen river area, Northeast China. The total concentration of 15 PAHs in the air particulates, water, water particulates, and particulates in the ice and snow ranged: 3.2–776 ng m−3, 12.9–383 ng L−1, 19.4–2.10 × 103 ng L−1, 62.8–136 ng L−1 and 9.68 × 103–6.96 × 104 ng g−1, respectively. Elevated PAHs were found in winter season, followed by autumn, and lowest in summer. Seasonal variations of air particulate PAHs well reflected by the local residential heating period, which maybe the main contributive factor for high PAH levels in winter. PAH congeners and principal component analysis of 15 PAH congeners in particulate samples of air, water, snow and ice show similar patterns suggesting common sources of PAHs. Fluorene, phenanthrene and pyrene were found to be dominant compounds. PAHs observed in the air particulates appeared to be strongly related to those in other particulate samples, and atmospheric deposition can be an important factor in the environmental quality of the Tumen river area. Additionally, other meteorological factors such as temperature and CO2 levels affecting PAHs distribution in the atmosphere were discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The gas purge microsyringe extraction (GP-MSE) technique offers quantitative and simultaneous extraction, and rapid gas chromatographic–mass spectrometric determination of volatile and semivolatile chemicals is possible. To simplify the application, a new automatic temperature control system was developed here. Stable heating and cooling over a wide range of temperatures were achieved using a micro-heater and thermoelectric cooler under varying gas flow conditions. Temperatures could be accurately controlled in the range 20–350°C (heating) and 20 to −4°C (cooling). Temperature effects on the extraction performance of the GP-MSE were experimentally investigated by comparing the recoveries of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) under various experimental conditions. A sample treatment was completed within 3min, which is much less than the time required for chromatographic analysis. The recovery of chemicals determined ranged from 81 to 96%. High reproducibility data (RSD≤5%) were obtained for direct extraction of various analytes in spiked complex plant and biological samples. The data show that the heating and cooling system has potential applications in GP-MSE system for the direct determination of various kinds of volatile and semivolatile chemicals from complex matrices without any, or only minor, sample pretreatment. Abstract: There is a trend towards the use of enrichment techniques such as microextraction in the analysis of trace chemicals. Based on the theory of ideal gases, theory of gas chromatography and the original headspace liquid phase microextraction (HS-LPME) technique, a simple gas flow headspace liquid phase microextraction (GF-HS-LPME) technique has been developed, where the extracting gas phase volume is increased using a gas flow. The system is an open system, where an inert gas containing the target compounds flows continuously through a special gas outlet channel (D =1.8mm), and the target compounds are trapped on a solvent microdrop (2.4μL) hanging on the microsyringe tip, as a result, a high enrichment factor is obtained. The parameters affecting the enrichment factor, such as the gas flow rate, the position of the microdrop, the diameter of the gas outlet channel, the temperatures of the extracting solvent and of the sample, and the extraction time, were systematically optimized for four types of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The results were compared with results obtained from HS-LPME. Under the optimized conditions (where the extraction time and the volume of the extracting sample vial were fixed at 20min and 10mL, respectively), detection limits (S/N=3) were approximately a factor of 4 lower than those for the original HS-LPME technique. The method was validated by comparison of the GF-HS-LPME and HS-LPME techniques using data for PAHs from environmental sediment samples. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Of the many parameters that affect the enrichment factors in headspace liquid-phase microextraction, in this study, we systematically investigated the influence of the vapor pressure of the extracting solvent. Seven extracting solvents with different vapor pressures were selected and tested. It was found that the vapor pressure of the extracting solvent dramatically affects the enrichment factor and the factor was increasing by decreasing the extracting solvent vapor pressure under given experimental conditions. The result was validated for volatile organic compounds such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
