Bioelectronics holds great potential as therapeutics, but introducing conductive structures within the body poses great challenges. While implanted rigid and substrate-bound electrodes often result in inflammation and scarring in vivo, they outperform the in situ-formed, more biocompatible electrodes by providing superior control over electrode geometry. For example, one of the most researched methodologies, the formation of conductive polymers through enzymatic catalysis in vivo, is governed by diffusion control due to the slow kinetics, with curing times that span several hours to days. Herein, the discovery of the formation of biocompatible conductive structures through photopolymerization in vivo, enabling spatial control of electrode patterns is reported. The process involves photopolymerizing novel photoactive monomers, 3Es (EDOT-trimers) alone and in a mixture to cure the poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene)butoxy-1-sulfonate (PEDOT-S) derivative A5, resulting in conductive structures defined by photolithography masks. These reactions are adapted to in vivo conditions using green and red lights, with short curing times of 5-30 min. In contrast to the basic electrode structures formed through other in situ methods, the formation of specific and layered patterns is shown. Vanillyl alcohol has emerged as a widely used building block for the development of biobased monomers. More specifically, the cationic (photo-)polymerization of the respective diglycidyl ether (DGEVA) is known to produce materials of outstanding thermomechanical performance. Generally, chain transfer agents (CTAs) are of interest in cationic resins not only because they lead to more homogeneous polymer networks but also because they strikingly improve the polymerization speed. Herein, the aim is to compare the cationic chain-growth photopolymerization with the thermally initiated anionic step-growth polymerization, with and without the addition of CTAs. Indeed, CTAs lead to faster polymerization reactions as well as the formation of more homogeneous networks, especially in the case of the thermal anionic step-growth polymerization. Resulting from curing above the T G of the respective anionic step-growth polymer, materials with outstanding tensile toughness (>5 MJ cm -3 ) are obtained that result in the manufacture of potential shape-memory polymers., (© 2024 The Author(s). The use of photopolymerization is expanding across a multitude of biomedical applications, from drug delivery to bioprinting. Many of these current and emerging photopolymerization systems employ visible light, as motivated by safety and energy efficiency considerations. However, the "library" of visible light initiators is limited compared with the wealth of options available for UV polymerization. Furthermore, the synthesis of traditional photoinitiators relies on diminishing raw materials, and several traditional photoinitiators are considered emerging environmental contaminants. As such, there has been recent focus on identifying and characterizing biologically sourced, visible light-based photoinitiator systems that can be effectively used in photopolymerization applications. In this regard, several bio-sourced molecules have been shown to act as photoinitiators, primarily through Type II photoinitiation mechanisms. However, whether bio-sourced molecules can also act as effective synergists in these reactions remains unknown. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of bio-sourced synergist candidates, with a focus on amino acids, due to their amine functional groups, in combination with two bio-sourced photoinitiator molecules: riboflavin and curcumin. We tested the effectiveness of these photoinitiator systems under both violet (405 nm) and blue (460-475 nm) light using photo-rheology. We found that several synergist candidates, namely lysine, arginine, and histidine, increased the polymerization effectiveness of riboflavin when used with both violet and blue light. With curcumin, we found that almost all tested synergist candidates slightly decreased the polymerization effectiveness compared with curcumin alone under both light sources. These results show that bio-sourced molecules have the potential to be used as synergists with bio-sourced photoinitiators in visible light photopolymerization. However, more work must be done to fully characterize these reactions and to investigate more synergist candidates. Solvent-free photopolymerization of vinyl monomers to produce high modulus materials with applications in 3D printing and photoswitchable materials is demonstrated. Polymerizable eutectic (PE) mixtures are prepared by simply heating and stirring various molar ratios of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), acrylamide (AAm) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). The structural and thermal properties of the resulting mixtures are evaluated by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). UV photocuring kinetics of the PE mixtures is evaluated via in situ photo-DSC and photorheology measurements. The PE mixtures cure rapidly and display storage moduli that are orders of magnitude greater than equivalent copolymers cured in an aqueous medium. The versatility of these PE systems is demonstrated through the addition of a photoswitchable spiropyran acrylate monomer, as well as applying the PE formulation as a stereolithography (SLA)-based 3D printing resin. Due to the hydrogen-bonding network in PE systems, 3D printing of the eutectic resin is possible in the absence of crosslinkers. The purpose of this work is to explore the properties of the lignin-derived amine-free photoinitiating systems (PISs) during the curing process. Four novel hydrogen donors (HD1, HD2, HD3, and HD4) derived from lignin α-O-4 structural were designed and synthesized by simple methods, and their low C-H bond dissociation energies on methylene were determined by molecular orbitals theory. Four experimental groups using CQ (camphorquinone)/HD PIs formulated with Bis-GMA/TEGDMA (70 w%/30 w%) were compared to CQ/EDB (ethyl 4-dimethylamino benzoate) system. The photopolymerization profiles and double bond conversion rate was tracked by FTIR experiments; the color bleaching ability of the samples and color aging test assay were performed using color indexes measurements; The cytotoxicity of the samples was also compared to EDB related systems. All of the experimental groups with new HDs were compared to the control group with EDB by statistical analysis. Compared to CQ/EDB system, new lignin-derived hydrogen donors combined with CQ showed comparable or even better performances in polymerization initiation to form resin samples, under a blue dental LED in air. Excellent color bleaching property was observed with the new HDs. Aging tests and cytotoxicity examination of the resin were performed, indicating the new lignin compounds to be efficient hydrogen donors for amine-free CQ-based photo-initiating system. The development of visible light-regulated polymerizations for precision synthesis of polymers has drawn considerable attention in the past years. In this study, an ancient dye, indigo, is successfully identified as a new and efficient photoacid catalyst, which can readily promote the ring-opening polymerization of lactones under visible light irradiation in a well-controlled manner, affording the desired polyester products with predictable molecular weights and narrow dispersity. The enhanced acidity of indigos by excitation is crucial to the H-bonding activation of the lactone monomers. Objectives: This study demonstrates the use of photopolymerization to create semi-crystalline linear polymers suitable for thermally reversible materials in dental cast moldings produced from 3D printing., Methods: An aromatic diallyl, aliphatic dithiol chain extender, and monofunctional thiol were used in a photoinitiated system. The photopolymerization and crystallization kinetics as a function of chemistry and temperature were investigated using spectroscopy and calorimetry. These insights were used to realize vat photopolymerization-based 3D printing of functional objects that could be remotely melted and thereby removed using induction heating., Results: The addition of monothiol was shown to decrease the polymer molecular weight which correspondingly increased the crystallization rate. Photopolymerization kinetics are independent of temperature while crystallization was slowed as the temperature approaches the melting point of the materials. Through inclusion of chromium oxide, semicrystalline materials could be melted through induction heating. The problem of plastic waste in the environment calls for the development of new polymeric materials designed specifically for easy recycling at the end of their life cycle. Herein, a green polymer system comprising a series of necklace-shaped polydimethylsiloxanes bearing anthracene dimer units is developed. The polymers have low environmental impact and are easily recycled. Further, their flexibility and glass transition temperatures are easy to control. These necklace-shaped inorganic polymers are synthesized by photopolymerizing (dimerizing) anthracene-terminated oligo-dimethylsiloxane monomers. A key achievement of the present work is the successful chemical recovery of the monomers from the polymers through thermal depolymerization, enabling monomer-polymer recycling. By applying equilibrium polymerization with base catalysts, monomers with a controlled distributed chain length are synthesized from monomers with a constant chain length. The necklace-shaped polymers synthesized from these randomized monomers have amorphous structures and readily form transparent films. It is possible to modulate the thermal and mechanical properties of the polymers by controlling the average chain length of the polydimethylsiloxane between the anthracene dimers. Metal halide perovskites have emerged as versatile photocatalysts to convert solar energy for chemical processes. Perovskite photocatalyzed polymerization draws special attention due to its straightforward synthesis process and the ability to create advanced perovskite-polymer nanocomposites. Herein, this work employs Cs 3 Sb 2 Br 9 perovskite nanoparticles (NPs) as a lead-free photocatalyst for light-controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Cs 3 Sb 2 Br 9 NPs exhibit high reduction potential and interact with electronegative bromide initiator with Lewis acid Sb sites, enabling efficient photoinduced reduction of initiators and controlled polymerization under blue light irradiation. Methacrylate monomers with various functional groups are successfully polymerized, and the resulting polymer showcased a dispersity (Đ) as small as 1.27. The living nature of polymerization is confirmed by high chain end fidelity and kinetic studies. Moreover, Cs 3 Sb 2 Br 9 NPs serve as heterogeneous photocatalysts, demonstrating recyclability and reusability for up to four cycles. Dyes based on quinoline and quinoxaline skeletons were designed for application as visible light photoinitiators. The obtained compounds absorb electromagnetic radiation on the border between ultraviolet and visible light, which allows the use of dental lamps as light sources during the initiation of the photopolymerization reaction. Their another desirable feature is the ability to create a long-lived excited state, which enables the chain reaction to proceed through the mechanism of intermolecular electron transfer. In two-component photoinitiating systems, in the presence of an electron donor or a hydrogen atom donor, the synthesized compounds show excellent abilities to photoinitiate the polymerization of acrylates. In control tests, the efficiency of photopolymerization using modified quinoline and quinoxaline derivatives is comparable to that obtained using a typical, commercial photoinitiator for dentistry, camphorquinone. Moreover, the use of the tested compounds requires a small amount of photoinitiator (only 0.04% by weight) to initiate the reaction. The research also showed a significant acceleration of the photopolymerization process and shortening of the reaction time. In practice, this means that the new two-component initiating systems can be used in much lower concentrations without slowing down the speed of obtaining polymer materials. It is worth emphasizing that these two features of the new initiating system allow for cost reduction by reducing financial outlays on both materials (photoinitiators) and electricity., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

Many natural organisms, such as fungal hyphae and plant roots, grow at their tips, enabling the generation of complex bodies composed of natural materials as well as dexterous movement and exploration. Tip growth presents an exemplary process by which materials synthesis and actuation are coupled, providing a blueprint for how growth could be realized in a synthetic system. Herein, we identify three underlying principles essential to tip-based growth of biological organisms: a fluid pressure driving force, localized polymerization for generating structure, and fluid-mediated transport of constituent materials. In this work, these evolved features inspire a synthetic materials growth process called extrusion by self-lubricated interface photopolymerization (E-SLIP), which can continuously fabricate solid profiled polymer parts with tunable mechanical properties from liquid precursors. To demonstrate the utility of E-SLIP, we create a tip-growing soft robot, outline its fundamental governing principles, and highlight its capabilities for growth at speeds up to 12 cm/min and lengths up to 1.5 m. This growing soft robot is capable of executing a range of tasks, including exploration, burrowing, and traversing tortuous paths, which highlight the potential for synthetic growth as a platform for on-demand manufacturing of infrastructure, exploration, and sensing in a variety of environments.

Temporal and spatial control over polydopamine formation on the nanoscale can be achieved by installing an irradiation-sensitive polymerization system on DNA origami. Precisely distributed G-quadruplex structures on the DNA template serve as anchors for embedding the photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX, which-upon irradiation with visible light-induces the multistep oxidation of dopamine to polydopamine, producing polymeric structures on designated areas within the origami framework. The photochemical polymerization process allows exclusive control over polydopamine layer formation through the simple on/off switching of the light source. The obtained polymer-DNA hybrid material shows significantly enhanced stability, paving the way for biomedical and chemical applications that are typically not possible owing to the sensitivity of DNA., (© 2019 The Authors. In a significant breakthrough from classical molecular (i.e., nonpolymeric) iodonium salts in light-induced photochemistry, the synthesis and use of new safer polymeric iodonium salts are reported here. They are shown to be involved in charge transfer complexes (CTCs) while in interaction with a safe amino acid derivative (N-phenylglycine). Also, this study demonstrates i) the formation of CTCs between the iodonium (acceptor) and an aryl/alkyl amine (donor) through UV-vis measurements of the monomer, ii) the formation of radicals in electron spin resonance spin trapping experiments when the CTCs are irradiated by visible light (405 nm), and iii) their efficiency as a photoinitiator to polymerize three different acrylic monomers under LED irradiation at 405 nm under air and their application to 3D resolved laser writing of thick samples (3 mm). High reactivity for polymeric iodonium salts comparable with molecular ones is exhibited with the advantage of potential lower migration. The development of convenient synthetic methods and improved materials for the production of high load-capacity and biocompatible drug delivery systems is a challenging task with important implications in health sciences. In this work, acrylamide/2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate and N-isopropylacrylamide/2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate hydrogels were synthesized by photopolymerization using energy-efficient green-LEDs. A functionalized silsesquioxane was used as both crosslinker and co-initiator for the photopolymerization. The hybrid organic-inorganic nature of the silsesquioxane improved the resulting hydrogels' properties increasing their swelling capacity and biocompatibility. Additionally, the mild conditions used during the photopolymerization allowed the synthesis of hydrogels in the presence of antibiotics yielding high load-capacity materials in which the drug preserves its molecular structure and antimicrobial activity (as confirmed by HPLC and microbiological assays). The materials were characterized by FTIR, DSC and SEM. Additionally, the kinetics of gels´ swelling and drug release were studied under physiological conditions (pH 7.4 and 37 °C). The results demonstrate how hydrogel composition affects the antibiotics-release kinetics. The final drug release percentage increased with increasing molar fraction of acrylamide or N-isopropylacrylamide and in most cases exceeded 85%. Finally, the antibacterial effect of loaded gels was characterized using a number of assays against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. The observed antibacterial effect correlated well with swelling and drug release results. Furthermore, gels are not toxic for isolated erythrocytes as demonstrated by haemolytic tests. Photopolymerization of nanocomposite materials using near infrared light is one of the unique technologies based on the luminescent properties of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). We explored the UCNP-triggered radical polymerization both in oligomer bulk and on the nanoparticle surface in aqueous dispersion. Core/shell UCNPs NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ and Tm 3+ /NaYF 4 with emitting lines in the ultraviolet and blue regions were used to activate a photoinitiator. The study of the bulk photopolymerization in an initially homogeneous reaction mixture showed the UCNP redistribution due to gradient density occurring in the volume, which led to formation of UCNP superlattices and spheres "frozen" in a polymer matrix. We also developed a strategy of "grafting from" the surface, providing polymer shell growth directly on the nanoparticles. The photosensitization of the endogenous water-soluble photoinitiator riboflavin by the resonance energy transfer from UCNPs was demonstrated in the course of monomer glycidyl methacrylate polymerization followed by photocrosslinking with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate on the nanoparticle surface.

Challenges especially in the minimal invasive restorative treatment of teeth require further developments of composite polymerization techniques. These include, among others, the securing of a complete polymerization with moderate thermal stress for the pulp. The aim of this study is to compare current light curing sources with a blue diode laser regarding curing depth and heat generation during the polymerization process. A diode laser (445 nm), a LED, and a halogen lamp were used for polymerizing composite resins. The curing depth was determined according to the norm ISO 4049. Laser output powers of 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 2 W were chosen. The laser beam diameter was adapted to the glass rod of the LED and the halogen lamp (8 mm). The irradiation time was fixed at 40 s. To ascertain ΔT values, the surface and ground area temperatures of the cavities were simultaneously determined during the curing via a thermography camera and a thermocouple. The curing depths for the LED (3.3 mm), halogen lamp (3.1 mm) and laser (0.5/1 W) (3/3.3 mm) showed no significant differences (p < 0.05). The values of ΔT surface as well as ΔT ground also showed no significant differences among LED, halogen lamp, and laser (1 W) . The ΔT surface values were 4.1 LED , 4.3 halogen lamp , and 4.5 °C for the laser while the ΔT ground values were 2.7 LED , 2.6 halogen lamp , and 2.9 °C for the laser. The results indicate that the blue diode laser (445 nm) is a feasible alternative for photopolymerization of complex composite resin restorations in dentistry by the use of selected laser parameters.

A series of hydrophilic poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (PPEGMA) macroinitiators and stabilizers are synthesized in methanol through in situ photo-controlled bromine-iodine transformation living radical polymerization, where ethyl α-bromophenylacetate (EBPA) is the initial initiator and is converted to an iodo-type initiator in the presence of NaI. The subsequent photo-controlled polymerization-induced self-assembly (photo-PISA) process is achieved by adding a second monomer, hydrophobic benzyl methacrylate (BnMA), under irradiation with blue light emitting diode (LED) light at room temperature. The effect of the target degree of polymerization (DP) of PPEGMA, PBnMA, as well as the solids content on the self-assembly behavior of block copolymer PPEGMA-b-PBnMA is evaluated by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) characterization. Nonspecific binding or adsorption of biomolecules presents as a major obstacle to higher sensitivity, specificity and reproducibility in microarray technology. We report herein a method to fabricate antifouling microarray via photopolymerization of biomimetic betaine compounds. In brief, carboxybetaine methacrylate was polymerized as arrays for protein sensing, while sulfobetaine methacrylate was polymerized as background. With the abundant carboxyl groups on array surfaces and zwitterionic polymers on the entire surfaces, this microarray allows biomolecular immobilization and recognition with low nonspecific interactions due to its antifouling property. Therefore, low concentration of target molecules can be captured and detected by this microarray. It was proved that a concentration of 10ngmL -1 bovine serum albumin in the sample matrix of bovine serum can be detected by the microarray derivatized with anti-bovine serum albumin. Moreover, with proper hydrophilic-hydrophobic designs, this approach can be applied to fabricate surface-tension droplet arrays, which allows surface-directed cell adhesion and growth. Developing and regenerating neurites respond to a variety of biophysical and biochemical cues in their micro-environment to reach target cells and establish appropriate synapses. Defining the hierarchal relationship of both types of cues to direct neurite growth carries broad significance for neural development, regeneration, and, in particular, engineering of neural prostheses that improve tissue integration with native neural networks. In this work, chemorepulsive biochemical borders are established on substrates with a range of surface microfeatures to determine the potential of physical cues to overcome conflicting biochemical cues. Physical micropatterns are fabricated using photomasking techniques to spatially control photoinitiation events of the polymerization. Temporal control of the reaction allows for generation of microfeatures with the same amplitude across a range of feature frequencies or periodicities. The micropatterned substrates are then modified with repulsive chemical borders between laminin and either EphA4-Fc or tenascin C that compete with the surface microfeatures to direct neurite growth. Behaviour of neurites from spiral ganglion and trigeminal neurons is characterized at biochemical borders as cross, turn, stop, or repel events. Both the chemical borders and physical patterns significantly influence neurite pathfinding. On unpatterned surfaces, most neurites that originate on laminin are deterred by the border with tenascin C or EphA4-Fc. Importantly, substrates with frequent micropattern features overcome the influence of the chemorepulsive border to dominate neurite trajectory. Designing prosthesis interfaces with appropriate surface features may allow for spatially organized neurite outgrowth in vivo even in the presence of conflicting biochemical cues in native target tissues., (Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

To address the challenge of metal contamination, a "graft from" approach via organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (O-ATRP) is developed to synthesize poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-co-CTFE)) graft copolymers. N-phenylphenothiazine is utilized as a model organic photoredox catalyst for catalyzing the (co)polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), methacrylate (MA), and n-butyl acrylate (BA). By employing this technique, high temporal control of polymerization and graft content are achieved. A series of P(VDF-co-CTFE)-g-PMMA, P(VDF-co-CTFE)-g-PMA, and P(VDF-co-CTFE)-g-PBA is prepared under mild conditions. The resultant graft copolymer can be used as macroinitiator to re-initiate O-ATRP to synthesize P(VDF-co-CTFE)-g-(PMMA-b-PMA), which might exhibit the potential application as novel dielectric material., (© 2017 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Ene-functionalized ionic liquids with a range of different cationic groups and counteranions react stoichiometrically within a tetrathiol-divinyl ether formulation within 20 minutes to form thiol-ene polymers with measurable ionic conductivities via a photoinitiated polymerization and crosslinking reaction. Dynamic mechanical analysis indicates that these networks are more spatially heterogeneous and possess higher glass transition temperatures (T g ) compared with thiol-ene formulations without charge. While tuning the molar content of ionic liquid monomer is one method for adjusting the crosslink and charge densities of the thiol-ene polymeric ionic liquid networks, the presence of cation-anion interactions also plays a critical role in dictating the thermomechanical and conductive properties. Particularly, while cationic structure effects are not significant on the polymer properties, the use of a weakly coordinating hydrophobic anion (bistriflimide) instead of bromide-based networks results in an apparent decrease in hydrated ion conductivity (7.4 to 1.5 mS cm -1 ) and T g (-9.6 to -17.8 °C)., (© 2017 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Well-defined poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) are prepared via photochemically induced atom transfer radical polymerization (photoATRP) using ppm amounts of CuBr 2 /tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine and CuBr 2 /tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine catalyst complexes, respectively, without degassing of polymerization mixture and with no need to introduce an external reducing agent to the system. The effect of ligand to CuBr 2 ratio on kinetic and induction period during the polymerization of MMA and MA is investigated. The induction period is influenced also by the amount of oxygen in the polymerization system. Both the kinetics of MA polymerization and the induction period are affected by light intensity. Finally, the high livingness and initiation efficiency of the photoATRP system in the presence of air are proved by chain extension polymerizations. Vinyl ketone polymers, including phenyl vinyl ketone (PVK), are an important class of polymers due to their ability to degrade upon irradiation with ultraviolet light which makes them useful for a variety of applications. However, traditional radical methods for synthesizing PVK polymers give rise to poor control or are unable to produce block copolymers. This work uses reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) and photochemistry to polymerize PVK. When visible blue radiation of 440 ± 10 nm is used as the light source for the photopolymerization, rapid polymerization and well-defined polymers are created. This RAFT method uses PVK as both monomer and radical initiator, exciting the PVK mono-mer by 440 ± 10 nm irradiation to avoid the use of an additional radical initiator. Once the poly-mer is synthesized, it is stable against degradation by blue light (440 ± 10 nm), but upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation (310 ± 20 nm) significant decrease in molecular weight is observed. Self-initiated photografting polymerization is used to couple the polymerizable initiator monomer 2-(2-chloropropanoyloxy)ethyl acrylate to a range of polymeric substrates. The technique requires only UV light to couple the initiator to surfaces. The initiator surface density can be varied by inclusion of a diluent monomer or via selection of initiator and irradiation parameters. The functionality of the initiator surface is demonstrated by subsequent surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. Surfaces are characterized by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ellipsometry, and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and UV-induced changes to the initiator are assessed by (1) H NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). A novel procedure has been developed for the Gilch reaction leading to poly(p-phenylene vinylenes) (PPVs). In the first step, selective activation of the starting material is achieved at low temperature. Subsequently, controlled chain growth is induced by lighting the α-halo-p-quinodimethane monomer. In contrast to the thermal Gilch polymerization, the photoinduced process allows adjusting crucial parameters such as intensity and energy of light. The progress of PPV formation can be followed visually or by in situ UV-vis spectroscopy. Objectives: The use of a Type I photoinitiator (monoacylphosphine oxide, MAPO) was described as advantageous in a model formulation, as compared to the conventional Type II photoinitiator (Camphorquinone, CQ). The aim of the present work was to study the kinetics of polymerization of various composite mixtures (20-40-60-80 mol%) of bisphenol A glycidyl dimethacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (BisGMA/TegDMA) containing either CQ or MAPO, based on real-time measurements and on the characterization of various post-cure characteristics., Methods: Polymerization kinetics were monitored by Fourier-transform near-infrared spectroscopy (FT-NIRS) and dielectric analysis (DEA). A range of postcure properties was also investigated., Results: FT-NIRS and DEA proved complementary to follow the fast kinetics observed with both systems. Autodecceleration occurred after ≈1 s irradiation for MAPO-composites and ≈5-10 s for CQ-composites. Conversion decreased with increasing initial viscosity for both photoinitiating systems. However despite shorter light exposure (3s for MAPO vs 20s for CQ-composites), MAPO-composites yielded higher conversions for all co-monomer mixtures, except at 20 mol% BisGMA, the less viscous material. MAPO systems were associated with increased amounts of trapped free radicals, improved flexural strength and modulus, and reduced free monomer release for all co-monomer ratios, except at 20 mol% BisGMA., Significance: This work confirms the major influence of the initiation system both on the conversion and network cross-linking of highly-filled composites, and further highlights the advantages of using MAPO photoinitiating systems in highly-filled dimethacrylate-based composites provided that sufficient BisGMA content (>40 mol%) and adapted light spectrum are used., (Copyright © 2015 Academy of Dental Materials. In this work, hydroxyapatite (HA) was first dispersed into cyclic acetal unit based monomers (EHD), and then EHD/HA composites were obtained by in-situ photopolymerization. FTIR and XRD analyses were used to successfully confirm the chemical composition of this composite. Real-time FTIR revealed that there was no significant effect on the photopolymerization process until the HA content was up to 30%. Several samples of such a composite with different loading amounts of HA were prepared to study effects of HA concentrations on the EHD/HA composite in particular in terms of SEM, TG, DMA, water contact angel and in-vitro biocompatibility. Objectives: The degree and rate of photopolymerization in resin-based dental composites will significantly affect polymer network formation and resultant material properties that may determine their clinical success. This study investigates the mechanical properties, the generation of stress from polymerization, tooth cusp deflection and marginal integrity of experimental resin composites that contain different photoinitiators., Methods: Experimental light-activated resin composites (60vol% particulate filled in 50/50mass% bis-GMA/TEGDMA) were formulated using a monoacylphosphine oxide (MAPO) photoinitiator and compared with a conventional camphoroquinone (CQ)-based system. Similar radiant exposure was used (18Jcm(-2)) for polymerization of each material although the curing protocol was varied (400mWcm(-2) for 45s, 1500mWcm(-2) for 12s and 3000mWcm(-2) for 6s). Degree and rate of polymerization was calculated in real-time by near infrared spectroscopy and the generation of stress throughout polymerization measured using a cantilever beam method. Flexural strength and modulus were acquired by three-point bend tests. Standardized cavities in extract pre-molar teeth were restored with each material, the total cuspal deflection measured and post-placement marginal integrity between the tooth and restoration recorded., Results: Generally, MAPO- exhibited a significantly higher degree of conversion (72±0.8 to 82±0.5%) compared with CQ-based materials (39±0.7 to 65±1.6%) regardless of curing protocol (p<0.05) and MAPO-based materials exhibited less difference in conversion between curing protocols. CQ-based materials exhibited between ∼85 and 95% of the maximum rate of polymerization at <15% conversion, whereas MAPO-based RBCs did not approach the maximum rate until >50% conversion. Higher irradiance polymerization had a significant deleterious effect on the mechanical properties of CQ-based materials (p<0.05) whereas MAPO-based materials exhibited increased strength and modulus and were less affected by the curing method. Total cuspal deflection in restored extracted teeth was higher for CQ- compared with MAPO-based materials cured at the lowest irradiance curing protocol (12.9±4.0 and 8.3±1.5μm) and similar at 3000mWcm(-1) for 6s (10.1±3.5 and 9.0±1.5μm). A significant decrease in marginal integrity was observed for CQ-based RBCs cured at high irradiance for short exposure time compared with that of the MAPO-based RBC cured using a similar protocol (p=0.037)., Significance: Polymer network formation dictates the final properties of the set composite and the use MAPO photoinitiators may provide an effective restorative material that exhibits higher curing speeds, increased degree of conversion, strength and modulus without compromise in terms of polymerization stress and marginal integrity between tooth and restoration., (Copyright © 2014 Academy of Dental Materials. Various approaches to latent polymerization processes are described. In order to highlight recent advances in this field, the discussion is subdivided into chapters dedicated to diverse classes of polymers, namely polyurethanes, polyamides, polyesters, polyacrylates, epoxy resins, and metathesis-derived polymers. The described latent initiating systems encompass metal-containing as well as purely organic compounds that are activated by external triggers such as light, heat, or mechanical force. Special emphasis is put on the different chemical venues that can be taken to achieve true latency, which include masked N-heterocyclic carbenes, latent metathesis catalysts, and photolatent radical initiators, among others. To develop resin-modified glass ionomer materials, we synthesized methacrylate-functionalized acrylic copolymer (PAlk-LeuM) derived from acrylic acid, itaconic acid and N-acryloyl-L-leucine using (N-methacryloyloxyethylcarbamoyl-N'-4-hydroxybutyl) urea as the modifying agent. The spectroscopic (proton/carbon nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) characteristics, and the gel permeation chromatography/Brookfield viscosity measurements were analysed and compared with those of the non-modified copolymer (PAlk-Leu). The photocurable copolymer (PAlk-LeuM, ~14 mol% methacrylate groups) and its precursor (PAlk-Leu) were incorporated in dental ionomer compositions besides diglycidyl methacrylate of bisphenol A (Bis-GMA) or an analogue of Bis-GMA (Bis-GMA-1), triethylene glycol dimethacrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. The kinetic data obtained by photo-differential scanning calorimetry showed that both the degree of conversion (60.50-75.62%) and the polymerization rate (0.07-0.14 s(-1)) depend mainly on the amount of copolymer (40-50 wt.%), and conversions over 70% were attained in the formulations with 40 wt.% PAlk-LeuM. To formulate light-curable cements, each organic composition was mixed with filler (90 wt.% fluoroaluminosilicate/10 wt.% hydroxyapatite) into a 2.7:1 ratio (powder/liquid ratio). The light-cured specimens exhibited flexural strength (FS), compressive strength (CS) and diametral tensile strength (DTS) varying between 28.08 and 64.79 MPa (FS), 103.68-147.13 MPa (CS) and 16.89-31.87 MPa (DTS). The best values for FS, CS and DTS were found for the materials with the lowest amount of PAlk-LeuM. Other properties such as the surface hardness, water sorption/water solubility, surface morphology and fluorescence caused by adding the fluorescein monomer were also evaluated.

Phosphate diacrylates (CO-DAP, TMP-DAP) based on castor oil or trimethylolpropane were synthesized and evaluated in dental adhesive formulations in comparison with 3-acryloyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate phosphate (AMP-P). In an attempt to promote antibacterial activity, another photopolymerizable monomer (TCS-UMA) containing 5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol moiety (triclosan) was prepared and incorporated in adhesive resins. Each of these monomers had a molecular structure confirmed by spectral methods. The photopolymerization rates for monomers (0.063-0.088s(-1)) were lower than those determined in the monomer combinations (0.116-0.158s(-1)) incorporating phosphate diacrylate (11wt.%), BisGMA (33wt.%), TEGDMA (10wt.%), UDMA (10wt.%) and HEMA (15wt.%), the degree of conversion varying between 63.4 and 74.5%. The formed copolymers showed high values for water sorption (18.65-57.02μg/mm(3)) and water solubility (3.51-13.38μg/mm(3)), and the contact angle was dependent on the presence of CO-DAP (θF1: 66.67°), TMP-DAP (θF2: 55.05°) or AMP-P (θF3: 52.90°) in the photocrosslinked specimens compared to the sample without phosphate monomer (θF4: 82.14°). The scanning electron microscopy image of the dentin-resin composite interface after applying our F1 formulation (pH: 4.1) and its light-curing for 20s supports the evidence of the formation of the hybrid layer with the tooth structure created by self-etching approach, with no gaps or cracks in the adhesive. A comparative analysis of the adhesion achieved with commercial adhesive systems (Single Bond Universal, C-Bond) rather indicates similarities than differences between them. Two coumarinacyl bromides, 3‐(bromoacetyl)coumarin (BAC) and 3‐(bromoacetyl)‐7‐methoxycoumarin (BACO), were developed for the photopolymerization of N‐ethylcarbazole to construct conjugated polymer under visible and near‐infrared light irradiation. BAC outperformed the conventional phenacyl bromide photoinitiator, exhibiting superior photoinitiation performance due to its optimal absorption characteristics and electron transfer efficiency. The obtained poly(N‐ethylcarbazole) was thoroughly characterized, demonstrating the successful synthesis of a conjugated polymer with desired properties. Dedoping led to improved optical properties and film morphology. The polymerization mechanism was elucidated using transient absorption spectroscopy, revealing efficient electron transfer from the excited photoinitiators to N‐ethylcarbazole. Thio-benzothioxanthene imide (BTXI) exhibits long excited state lifetime (τT = 17.7 μs) and high ISC efficiency (ΦΔ = 97%). For the first time, BTXI derivatives were used as photosensitizers for triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion, achieving the highest efficiency of 13.8%. Controlled radical polymerization (CRP) techniques enable the preparation of diverse, chemically tailored polymers with a variety of chain architectures. Separately, light‐mediated polymerization reactions offer a number of advantages over thermal polymerizations in terms of energy efficiency, sustainability, and versatility. Recent work has combined photopolymerization and CRP techniques to advance the synthesis of polymers with nonlinear architectures, including bottlebrush polymers, star polymers, hyperbranched polymers, and cyclic polymers. These photoCRP methods offer novel routes to nonlinear polymers using mild reaction conditions. In this review, we provide an overview of photoCRP techniques for the synthesis of nonlinear polymers. We start with a discussion of photoCRP applied to the synthesis of linear polymers and discuss the underlying reaction mechanisms. Then, we discuss photoCRP applied to the synthesis of bottlebrush, star, hyperbranched, cyclic, and surface‐initiated polymer brushes. For each case, we discuss the synthetic strategy and the unique properties and characteristics of the resulting polymers, and we provide a perspective on potential future directions for research. A novel method has been developed for fabricating cholesteric liquid crystal polymer composite containing a luminescent europium complex. It involves creating porous cholesteric polymer networks, introducing the europium complex into the pores and encapsulating it through the UV-induced polymerisation of a nematic diacrylate. The resulting composite exhibits bright red luminescence upon excitation by UV light which is strongly circularly polarised. Currently, most photoredox catalysis polymerization systems are limited by high excitation power, long polymerization time, or the requirement of electron donors due to the precise design of efficient photocatalysts still poses a great challenge. Herein, we propose a new approach: the creation of efficient photocatalysts having low ground state oxidation potentials and high excited state energy levels, along with through‐space charge transfer (TSCT) induced intersystem crossing (ISC) properties. A cabazole‐naphthalimide (NI) dyad (NI‐1) characterized by long triplet excited state lifetime (τT=62 μs), satisfactory ISC efficiency (ΦΔ=54.3 %) and powerful reduction capacity [Singlet: E1/2 (PC+1/*PC)=−1.93 eV, Triplet: E1/2 (PC+1/*PC)=−0.84 eV] was obtained. An efficient and rapid polymerization (83 % conversion of 1 mM monomer in 30 s) was observed under the conditions of without electron donor, low excitation power (10 mW cm−2) and low catalyst (NI‐1) loading (<50 μM). In contrast, the conversion rate was lower at 29 % when the reference catalyst (NI‐4) was used for photopolymerization under the same conditions, demonstrating the advantage of the TSCT photocatalyst. Light‐mediated 3D printing techniques have gained significant interest due to the inherent advantages of light as external stimuli, including spatiotemporal control and easy access. As 3D printing processes require rapid polymerization, free radical or cationic polymerization methods are used. However, these polymerization reactions are limited to the production of materials with properties that cannot be chemically altered post‐printing. In this work, a rapid, open‐to‐air photo‐controlled cationic reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer polymerization of vinyl ethers is demonstrated in the presence of a three‐component photoinitiating system comprising a photosensitizer, electron donor, and acceptor as co‐initiators under the irradiation with blue light. The polymerization mechanism shows rapid kinetics and controlled, living polymerization characteristics. Trithiocarbonate chain ends of poly(isobutyl vinyl ethers) are reactivated to produce block copolymers with cyclohexyl vinyl ethers. The rapid kinetics and water tolerance of the reported system enable the 3D printing of polymeric solids under ambient (e.g., room temperature and open to air) conditions, followed by the effective reactivation of trithiocarbonate chain ends to post‐synthetically modify the object with an acrylate‐based fluorescent monomer via a controlled radical polymerization strategy. Photopolymerizations have garnered significant attention in polymer science due to their low polymerization temperature, high production efficiency, environmental friendliness, and spatial controllability. Despite these merits, the poor penetration and severe chemical damage from ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) light resources pose significant barriers to their success in conventional photopolymerizations. A recent breakthrough involving the utilization of near‐infrared (NIR) laser with long wavelength has been exploited for diverse applications. With the combination of a NIR photosensitizer (PS), NIR‐induced photopolymerizations have been successfully developed to alleviate the challenges in conventional methods. The enhancement of penetration depth and safety of NIR‐induced photopolymerizations can contribute significantly to improving the efficiency of polymerization for production of intricate structures across various scales. In this concept, the typical types of PSs and polymerization mechanisms (PMs) within the NIR‐induced photopolymerization systems have been classified in detail. Additionally, the applications of various polymers achieved by NIR‐induced photopolymerizations are summarized. In this work, photoinitiation systems based on dibenzo[a,c]phenazine sensitivity to visible light were designed for their potential application in dentistry. Modification of the structure of dibenzo[a,c]phenazine consisted of introducing electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents and heavy atoms into position 11. The synthesized compounds are able to absorb radiation emitted by dental lamps during photoinitiation of the polymerization process. In the presence of acrylates, dibenzo[a,c]phenazines show excellent photoinitiating abilities in systems containing an electron donor or a hydrogen-atom donor as a second component. The developed systems initiate the polymerization process comparable to a commercial photoinitiator, i.e., camphorquinone. Moreover, the performed studies showed a significant shortening of the polymerization time and a reduction in the amount of light absorber. This indicates that polymeric materials are obtained at a similar rate despite a significant reduction in the concentration of the newly developed two-component photoinitiating systems. The possibility of using a series of methacrylate-containing N,N-diethyl-4-(phenyldiazenyl)anilines with various para-substituents (–H, –Br, –NO2) relative to the azo group as photoinitiators of radical polymerization is considered. The electrochemical and photoluminescent properties of these compounds have been studied. In the presence of azo dyes, two-photon photopolymerization of pentaerythritol triacrylate was carried out using focused 780-nm radiation from a femtosecond laser. Structures with minimal dimensions of linear elements of 94 ± 5 nm were obtained by means of the DLW nanolithography technique, and 3D microstructures of complex architecture were fabricated. Decades of advances in understanding and simulating the polymerization kinetics and structural evolution that arises in free‐radical photopolymerizations of multifunctional monomers are combined into a single, first‐principles 3D model. The model explicitly accounts for polymerization features including diffusion‐controlled kinetics, oxygen inhibition, light attenuation, chain‐length dependent termination, reaction‐diffusion termination, heat transfer, composition and conversion‐dependent material properties, crosslinking effects, and species diffusion. Using the homopolymerization of 1,6‐hexanediol diacrylate as a model system, a minimum of two kinetics experiments performed at different initiation rates are required to fit model parameters. The model accurately predicts known relationships regarding oxygen inhibition, light intensity, and curing temperature for samples of different geometries and boundary conditions. The emphasis of the results herein is placed on the interactions between polymerization features, motivating the importance of a model that accommodates these features all in one simulation. The model is shown to be robust in its handling of thermal boundary conditions, alternative polymerization techniques or mechanisms, and characteristics of 3D voxel formation. The model in this work provides a useful tool for property prediction in a wide variety of applications, most notably coatings, dental materials, industrial photocuring processes, additive manufacturing, and holography, where complex interactions of the various features of polymerization play a substantial role. A new family of ionic Ir(III) cyclometalated complexes with general formula [Ir(CN)2(NN)][Br], was designed and prepared to be assessed as photocalysts for the visible light assisted ATRP polymerization of MMA. To this purpose, our design strategy involved both: i) the decoration of the cyclometalating (CN) and the ancillary (NN) ligands with various electron withdrawing and/or electron donor substituents and, ii) the use of Br− as the counter anion for these cationic Ir(III) species. After an extensive screening in which the [Ir(CN)2(NN)][Br]‐type compounds were compared to the model neutral complex fac‐[Ir(ppy)3], the "fully" amino‐substituted ion pairs abbreviated as [10][Br] and [11][Br], exhibited the best photocatalytic performances under irradiation with CFL lamps. It is worth noting that the outcomes of transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) experiments combined with theoretical DFT calculations, enlightened the role played by the Ir(III) complexes in the mechanism of the photoATRP process, and suggested the rationalization of the different performances that were highlighted by our Ir(III) catalyst in the visible light assisted photopolymerization of MMA. The electrically‐directed, isothermal response of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) to an applied electric field is a compelling approach to realize spatially tailorable, sequence‐controllable, and high‐frequency deformation. The electromechanical response is facilitated by coating aligned LCEs with compliant electrodes. Upon application of an electric field, the electrodes attract and generate Maxwell stress. The directional difference in moduli for aligned LCEs produces directional deformation of the material and does not require mechanical bias or framing. Here, LCEs prepared from a newly reported thiol‐ene reaction are explored as DEAs with improved mechanical and dielectric properties. This report details that incorporating a difunctional liquid crystalline monomer composed of allyl ether functional groups reduces Young's modulus, increases the dielectric constant, and improves cyclic recovery compared to an analogous LCE prepared by thiol‐ene polymerization. Electrically‐induced, isothermal deformation of as much as 30% strain is reported. Photopolymerization kinetics affects the curing time, degree of conversion, polymerization shrinkage, and mechanical properties of composites. The aim of this study was to compare three methods (temperature, heat flow, and polymerization shrinkage) for photopolymerization kinetics measurement of composites. The photopolymerization kinetics of four composites (2 packable and 2 flowable) were measured with an LED light for 20 s (radiant emittance: 2,100 mW/cm² ). For the two packable composites, photopolymerization kinetics was measured with varying the radiant emittance and exposure time. For each measurement method, peak times were determined as the time when maximum temperature rise, heat flow, and shrinkage rate occurred, respectively. The photopolymerization kinetics differed among the measurement methods. The photopolymerization kinetics of composites changed as the radiant emittance and composite type varied. Hydrogels with polymer networks formed through physical interactions have received attention because of their post‐moldability and self‐healing properties upon physicochemical stimulation. Although hydrogels become fragile without covalent crosslinking, poly(N‐acryloyl‐glycinamide) (PNAGA) hydrogels, which are formed through hydrogen bonding among PNAGA molecules, have recently demonstrated exceptional strain. In this study, we prepared a series of PNAGA hydrogels with different molecular weights and constant weight concentrations of PNAGA. Stress–strain tests demonstrated that higher molecular weights of PNAGA promote extensibility. The swelling ability of the hydrogel also increased with higher molecular weights of PNAGA, suggesting that high molecular weights of PNAGA significantly increase the tolerability of hydrogels to shape change, which opens up new possibilities for developing robust hydrogels without the requirement for cross‐linking. Although different behaviors were not observed with changes in the molecular weight, we achieved hydrogel re‐construction using the PNAGA powder obtained from hydrogels, which demonstrates an advantage of such polymer networks based on hydrogen bonding. Regarding the healing ability of the cut surfaces, hydrogels with a lower molecular weight exhibited higher recoveries, probably owing to the high PNAGA mobility in the hydrogels. Pathway‐dependent self‐assembly, in which a single building block forms two or more types of self‐assembled nanostructures, is an important topic due to its mimic to the complexity in biology and manipulation of diverse supramolecular materials. Here, we report a pathway‐dependent self‐assembly using chiral glutamide derivatives (L or D‐PAG), which form chiral nanotwist and nanotube through a cooperative slow cooling and an isodesmic fast cooling process, respectively. Furthermore, pathway‐dependent self‐assembly can be harnessed to control over the supramolecular co‐assembly of PAG with a luminophore β‐DCS or a photopolymerizable PCDA. Fast cooling leads to the co‐assembled PAG/β‐DCS nanotube exhibiting green circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), while slow cooling to nanofiber with blue CPL. Additionally, fast cooling process promotes the photopolymerization of PCDA into a red chiral polymer, whereas slow cooling inhibits the polymerization. An approach of 'polymerization of monomers in its aggregated form' is unprecedentedly introduced to (i) tailor the water wettability of fibrous and porous substrates from hydrophobicity to superhydrophobicity, and (ii) associate patterned wettability. A solution of selected monomers—i.e., alkyl acrylate in a good solvent (indicating high solubility; ethanol) was transferred into a bad solvent (refers to poor solubility; water) to achieve a stable dispersion of monomer aggregates of size <1 μm for deposition on fibrous and porous substrates. Its photopolymerization provided a durable coating with the ability to tailor the water wettability from 134° to 153°. Furthermore, a spatially selective photopolymerization process yielded a patterned interface of superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity. Such a facile chemical approach with the ability to provide a durable coating embedded with tailored and patterned wettability would be useful for various potential applications. Two common bio-sourced naphthoquinone derivatives, vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) and vitamin K3 (menadione), were employed in free radical photopolymerization under LED light exposure at 405 nm. In comparison with juglone, a previously reported natural naphthoquinone derivative, both vitamins exhibited enhanced properties in inducing free radical photopolymerization as sole initiators (monocomponent type II) and in combination with amines, and they can act as typical type II photoinitiators. In a three-component photoinitiating system consisting of an iodonium salt, amine and the vitamin, the polymerization process of TMPTA was significantly accelerated/improved too. These three-component systems resulted in faster reactions than the system that solely contains the iodonium salt or amine as the coinitiator, and they can additionally act as sensitizing dyes. Notably, the more polar vitamin K3 alone can initiate PEGDA polymerization with a high conversion rate, suggesting its potential utility in the development of biopolymer materials. The analysis of steady-state photolysis experiments revealed that K3 rapidly reacted with the electron-rich amine under light but was also more likely to generate by-products. In contrast, the inclusion of the iodonium salt in the three-component system significantly accelerated the photolysis of K3, demonstrating the superior chemical reactivity of the three-component system. Electron spin resonance spin trapping experiments successfully captured the radicals that initiated the photopolymerization reaction. Hence, these results facilitated the further deduction of potential reaction pathways. Finally, K1/iodonium salt and K3/amine, two systems that demonstrated strong performance in free radical polymerization experiments, were successfully applied to direct laser write experiments.
