There is growing interest in polymers with high ionic conductivity for applications including batteries, fuel cells, and separation membranes. However, measuring ion diffusion in polymers can be challenging, requiring complex procedures and instrumentation. Here, a simple strategy to study ion diffusion in polymers is presented that utilizes ion-chromic spiropyan as an indicator to measure the diffusion of LiTFSI, KTFSI, and NaTFSI within poly(ethylene oxide)-based polymer networks. These systems are selected, as these are common ions and polymers used in energy storage applications, however, the approach described is not specific to materials for energy storage. Specifically, to enabling the study of ion diffusion, these salts cause the spiropyran to undergo an isomerization reaction, which results in a significant color change. This colorimetric response enables the determination of the diffusion coefficients of these ions within films of these polymers simply by optically tracking the spatial-temporal evolution of the isomerization product within the film and fitting the data to the relevant diffusion equations. The simplicity of the method makes it amenable to the study of ion diffusion in polymers under a range of conditions, including various temperatures and under macroscopic deformation.

A general and quantitative method to characterize molecular transport in polymers with good temporal and high spatial resolution, in complex environments, is an important need of the pharmaceutical, textile, and food and beverage packaging industries, and of general interest to the polymer science community. Here we show how the amplified infrared (IR) absorbance sensitivity provided by plasmonic nanoantenna-based surface enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) provides such a method. SEIRA enhances infrared (IR) absorbances primarily within 50 nm of the nanoantennas, enabling localized quantitative detection of even trace quantities of analytes and diffusion measurements in even thin polymer films. Relative to a commercial attenuated total internal reflection (ATR) system, the limit of detection is enhanced at least 13-fold, and as is important for measuring diffusion, the detection volume is about 15 times thinner. Via this approach, the diffusion coefficient and solubility of specific molecules, including l-ascorbic acid (vitamin C), ethanol, various sugars, and water, in both simple and complex mixtures (e.g., beer and a cola soda), were determined in poly(methyl methacrylate), high density polyethylene (HDPE)-based, and polypropylene-based polyolefin films as thin as 250 nm.

The protein resistance of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) brushes grafted from silicon wafers was investigated as a function of the chain molecular weight, grafting density, and temperature. Above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of 32 °C, the collapse of the water-swollen chains, determined by ellipsometry, depends on the grafting density and molecular weight. Ellipsometry, radio assay, and fluorescence imaging demonstrated that, below the lower critical solution temperature, the brushes repel protein as effectively as oligoethylene oxide-terminated monolayers. Above 32 °C, very low levels of protein adsorb on densely grafted brushes, and the amounts of adsorbed protein increase with decreasing brush-grafting-densities. Brushes that do not exhibit a collapse transition also bind protein, even though the chains remain extended above the LCST. These findings suggest possible mechanisms underlying protein interactions with end-grafted poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) brushes.

Layered polymer/nanoparticle composites have been created through the one-step two-beam interference lithographic exposure of a dispersion of 25 and 50 nm silica particles within a photopolymerizable mixture at a wavelength of 532 nm. The polymerizable mixture is composed of pentaerythritol triacrylate (monomer), 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone (monomer), and photoinitiator. In the areas of constructive interference, the monomer begins to polymerize via a free-radical process and concurrently the nanoparticles move into the regions of destructive interference. The effects of exposure time, power density, nanoparticle size, and periodicity on the final nanocomposite structure were measured with transmission electron microscopy to determine the mechanism for particle segregation. Diffraction from the sample was monitored as well, though its magnitude was not a good predictor of nanostructure in this relatively low index contrast system. Exposure time did not have a strong effect on the final structure. The best nanoparticle sequestration was observed at reduced laser power density, smaller interferogram periodicity, and decreased nanoparticle size, indicating that particle segregation is dominated by diffusion-limited nanoparticle transport directed by a matrix containing a gradient of polymerization kinetics.

We demonstrate a facile method for fabricating novel 3D microfluidic channels by using two-photon-activated chemistry to locally switch the interior surface of a porous host from a hydrophobic state to a hydrophilic state. The 3D structures can be infilled selectively with water and/or hydrophobic oil with a minimum feature size of only a few micrometers. We envision that this approach may enable the fabrication of complex microfluidic structures that cannot be easily formed via current technologies.

Thermal transport in aqueous suspensions of Au-core polymer-shell nanoparticles is investigated by time-resolved measurements of optical absorption. The addition of an organic cosolvent to the suspension causes the polystyrene component of the polymer shell to swell, and this change in the microstructure of the shell increases the effective thermal conductivity of the shell by a factor of approximately 2. The corresponding time scale for the cooling of the nanoparticle decreases from 200 ps to approximately 100 ps. The threshold concentration of cosolvent that creates the changes in thermal conductivity, 5 vol % tetrahydrofuran in water or 40 vol % N,N-dimethylformamide in water, is identical to the threshold concentrations for producing small shifts in the frequency of the plasmon resonance. Because the maximum fraction of solvent in the polymer shell is less than 20 vol %, the increase in the effective thermal conductivity of the shell cannot be easily explained by contributions to heat transport by the solvent or enhanced alignment of the polystyrene backbone along the radial direction.

Gold nanoparticles stabilized by thiol-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ethers with molecular weights ranging from 350 to 2000 have been prepared at thiol-to-gold molar ratios ranging from 3:1 to 1:8. Particle size distributions have been constructed for these particles from transmission electron microscopy images of hundreds of particles for each variation in synthetic conditions. The mean diameters of these particles range from 1.5 to 3.2 nm, with a slight increase in particle size with decreasing thiol content; these particles are smaller than those prepared using alkanethiols at similar thiol-to-gold ratios. Particles prepared under thiol-poor conditions exhibit much greater polydispersity than those prepared under thiol-rich conditions and include numerically rare large-particle outliers that contain much of the gold in the sample. The mean diameters of the gold nanoparticles decrease slightly with increasing polymer weight, especially under thiol-rich conditions. A simple model is developed to predict the trends in nanoparticle diameter that would result were the polymer's steric bulk protecting the nanoparticles from additional growth the principal factor controlling nanoparticle size in this system. This model predicts a much stronger dependence on thiol concentration than has been experimentally observed and a dependence on polymer molecular weight opposite to that experimentally observed. This suggests that the polymers' steric bulk is not the principal reason that these polymers yield smaller nanoparticles than alkanethiols at similar thiol-to-gold ratios. It is instead proposed that polar polymers may yield small nanoparticles by accelerating particle nucleation via coordination between functional groups in the polymer and atomic gold.

We present an electrically switchable, compact metasurface device based on the metallic polymer PEDOT:PSS in combination with a gel polymer electrolyte. Applying square-wave voltages, we can reversibly switch the PEDOT:PSS from dielectric to metallic. Using this concept, we demonstrate a compact, standalone, and CMOS compatible metadevice. It allows for electrically controlled ON and OFF switching of plasmonic resonances in the 2–3 µm wavelength range, as well as electrically controlled beam switching at angles up to 10°. Furthermore, switching frequencies of up to 10 Hz, with oxidation times as fast as 42 ms and reduction times of 57 ms, are demonstrated. Our work provides the basis towards solid state switchable metasurfaces, ultimately leading to submicrometer-pixel spatial light modulators and hence switchable holographic devices.

The authors describe the fabrication and characterization of three dimensional silicon inverse woodpile photonic crystals. A dual exposure, two-photon, conformal phasemask technique is used to create high quality polymer woodpile structures over large areas with geometries that quantitatively match expectations based on optical simulations. Depositing silicon into these templates followed by the removal of the polymer results in silicon inverse woodpile photonic crystals for which calculations indicate a wide, complete photonic bandgap over a range of structural fill fractions. Spectroscopic measurements of normal incidence reflection from both the polymer and silicon photonic crystals reveal good optical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-resolution, conformable phase masks provide a means to fabricate, in an experimentally simple manner, classes of 3D nanostructures that are technologically important but difficult to generate in other ways. In this approach, light passing through a phase mask that has features of relief comparable in dimension to the wavelength generates a 3D distribution of intensity that exposes a photopolymer film throughout its thickness. Developing this polymer yields a structure in the geometry of the intensity distribution, with feature sizes as small as 50 nm. Rigorous coupled-wave analysis reveals the fundamental aspects of the optics associated with this method; a broad-range 3D nanostructures patterned with it demonstrates its technical capabilities. A nanoporous filter element built inside a microfluidic channel represents one example of the many types of functional devices that can be constructed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pressure dependence of thermal conductivity provides a critical test of the validity of the model of the minimum thermal conductivity for describing heat transport by molecular vibrations of an amorphous polymer. We measure the pressure dependence of the thermal conductivity Λ(P) of poly(methyl methacrylate) using a combination of time-domain thermoreflectance and SiC anvil-cell techniques. We also determine Λ(P) from a computational model of amorphous polystyrene. In both cases, Λ(P) is accurately predicted by the minimum thermal conductivity model via the pressure dependence of the elastic constants and density. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
