The article presents a study which examines the population trends and patterns in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) as illustrated by data from the October 2005 census. It evaluates the national and regional total populations, including nationality composition, migration and the trends in urbanization, from the war-torn republic. The results of the Soviet census in the region, particularly the difference of population in the NKR from the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast of Azerbaijan, are discussed.

This paper describes and analyzes the chief national and regional population trends to emerge in Azerbaijan between 1989, the year of the last Soviet Union census, and 1999, Focus is on the national total, urban, and rural population and urbanization trends, and especially to trends in such characteristics among the more than 60 rayons. In addition, fertility, mortality, natural increase (fertility minus mortality), migration, and nationality patterns, as well as the impact of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, are also addressed when appropriate, particularly with regard to their impact on those more general trends.

In this article, the author has attempted to investigate briefly the major nationality population trends and patterns in Belarus during the intercensal period of 1989-1999. At the nationwide level, results revealed that of the major nationalities, only the ethnic Belarusians experienced a total population increase, although it was only a slight one. In contrast, the ethnic Russian and Ukrainian populations declined especially sharply. As a result, the Belarusian share of the total population increased to over 80 percent in 1999 and the second-ranking Russian share dropped to barely more than 10 percent. The Belarusian share of the urban population increased appreciably, although their corresponding share of the rural population declined slightly. This study provides some initial observations on the general nationality population trends and patterns that have emerged from first census of post-Soviet Belarus.
