Sapphyrin is a pentapyrrolic expanded porphyrin with a 22π aromatic character. Herein, we report the synthesis of a 20π antiaromatic sapphyrin isomer 1 by oxidative cyclization of a pentapyrrane precursor P 5 with a terminal β-linked pyrrole. The resulting isomer 1, containing a mis-linked bipyrrole unit in the skeleton, exhibits a reactivity for further oxidation due to the distinct antiaromatic electronic structure, affording a fused macrocycle 2, possessing a spiro-carbon-containing [5.6.5.6]-tetracyclic structure. Subsequent treatment with an acid afforded a weakly aromatic pyrrolone-appended N-confused corrole 3, and thermal fusion gave a [5.6.5.7]-tetracyclic-ring-embedded 14π aromatic triphyrin(2.1.1) analog 4. Sensing of metal ions and anions is of great importance because of their widespread distribution in environmental systems and biological processes. Colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensors based on organic molecular species have been demonstrated to be effective for the detection of various ions and possess the significant advantages of low cost, high sensitivity, and convenient implementation. Of the available classes of organic molecules, porphyrin analogues possess inherently many advantageous features, making them suitable for the design of ion chemosensors, with the targeted sensing behavior achieved and easily modulated based on their following characteristics: (1) NH moieties properly disposed for binding of anions through cooperative hydrogen-bonding interactions; (2) multiple pyrrolic N atoms or other heteroatoms for selectively chelating metal ions; (3) variability of macrocycle size and peripheral substitution for modulation of ion selectivity and sensitivity; and (4) tunable near-infrared emission and good biocompatibility. In this Review, design strategies, sensing mechanisms, and sensing performance of ion chemosensors based on porphyrin analogues are described by use of extensive examples. Ion chemosensors based on normal porphyrins and linear oligopyrroles are also briefly described. This Review provides valuable information for researchers of related areas and thus may inspire the development of more practical and effective approaches for designing high-performance ion chemosensors based on porphyrin analogues and other relevant compounds.

XS1-XS3 have been synthesized by introducing an auxiliary acceptor into D-π-A dyes for simultaneous filling up of both absorption valleys of porphyrin dyes at around 550 and 380 nm. Thus, panchromatic DSSCs with the highest efficiency of 10.75% were achieved by cosensitization. This work provides a strategy for designing cosensitizers for porphyrin dyes.

The first neo-confused hexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.0) was synthesized by oxidative ring closure of a hexapyrrane bearing two terminal "confused" pyrroles. The new compound displays a folded conformation with a short interpyrrolic C⋅⋅⋅N distance of 3.102 Å, and thus it readily underwent ring fusion to afford a neo-fused hexaphyrin with an unprecedented 5,5,5,7-tetracyclic ring structure. Furthermore, coordination of Cu(II) triggered a ring opening/contracting reaction to afford a Cu(II) complex of an N-linked pentaphyrin derivative. One of the most important outcomes of organic nanotechnologies could be development of well-integrated systems for sensing of particular chemical species. Use of color indicators is an attractive approach to guest reporting. Of the known chromophores, porphyrin and its derivatives are the most widely studied functional chromophores in a diverse range of research fields. In this review, recent developments in colorimetric indicator functions of porphyrin derivatives and related compounds in their molecular and nano-architectures are reviewed according to the classification: (i) rather simple porphyrin derivatives, (ii) porphyrin conjugates, (iii) porphyrins embedded in bulk materials, and (iv) porphyrins in organized films. Porphyrin derivatives with unusual structures, such as expanded and N-confused ones have been used for color indicators in specific cases. Electron and energy transfers in porphyrins conjugated with other functional moieties resulted in dynamic sensing systems including switch-on and switch-off actions. Immobilization of porphyrin color indicators in appropriate matrices is important for practical applications. Use of supramolecular films such as self-assembled monolayers, Langmuir-Blodgett films, and layer-by-layer assemblies as porphyrin nanoarchitectures often offers opportunities for colorimetric outputs based on control of their aggregate structures.

To develop cosensitizers for fabricating dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on porphyrin dyes, C2 and C3 have been synthesized using a diphenylamine donor, an anthracene based π-spacer and a benzoic acid acceptor on the basis of our previously reported cosensitizer C1. Thus, two hexyloxy chains have been introduced in the diphenylamine donor to synthesize C2 with the purpose of extending the absorption wavelength range and suppressing the charge recombination, and C3 has been synthesized by introducing two bulky 2,4-bis(hexyloxy)phenyl groups in the diphenylamine donor to effectively suppress dye aggregation and charge recombination between the injected electrons and the electrolyte. On this basis, DSSCs have been fabricated by using C1–C3 based on the cobalt electrolyte. As expected, an obviously higher Jsc of 13.03 mA cm−2 has been obtained for C2 relative to that of 11.92 mA cm−2 obtained for C1. As a result, C2 shows a slightly improved efficiency of 7.59%. On the other hand, the molecular structure of C3 has been further optimized with two bulky dihexyloxyphenyl units, and thus the suppressed interfacial back electron transfer improves the Jsc to 13.23 mA cm−2 and the superior anti-aggregation ability enhances the Voc to 857 mV. Finally, the highest PCE value of 8.95% is achieved for C3. On this basis, cosensitization with XW66 affords remarkable efficiencies of 9.06%, 9.89% and 10.22% for C1–C3, respectively. Directly linked porphyrin dimers have attracted considerable attention because of their intriguing electronic features. Most emphasis has been placed on either dimers with large dihedral angles between the constituent planar monomeric subunits or those with overall planarity, referred to as "Planar-Twisted-Planar" and "Planar-Planar-Planar", respectively. Herein, we report a "Twisted-Planar-Twisted" framework, the hexaphyrin dimer D that exists in a trans configuration. Treatment of D with MeOH affords two isomeric dimers, MD1 and MD2, both of which incorporate a methoxy moiety and exist in cis orientations with respect to the tethering linkage. The methanol-promoted conversion is accompanied by a readily discernible color change from green to brown and is not induced to an appreciable level by other alcohols. Dimer D thus acts as a rudimentary, albeit highly selective, reaction-based methanol indicator. This work provides a promising approach for constructing reaction-based chemosensors using porphyrinoid dimers of nonplanar subunits with biased reactivity. Directly linked porphyrin dimers show intriguing electronic features but emphasis has been placed on planar monomeric units. Oxidation of a thiophene‐hexapyrrane hybrid S‐P6 afforded a stable conjugated open‐chain thiaheptapyrrolic helix 1 with the terminal thiophene and confused pyrrole units lying at a long distance that is adverse for further cyclization. Chelation of 1 with copper(II) ion afforded 1‐Cu, which exhibits more distant terminal units. Interestingly, further oxidation of 1 triggered an intramolecular C−N fusion reaction to afford a unique 5,5,5‐tricyclic fused linear thiaheptapyrrin 2, with the two terminals positioned in proximity, which favors the oxidative ring‐closure reaction to give a unique 5,5,5‐tricyclic fused thiaheptaphyrin (1.1.1.1.1.1.0) 3 under air. The inner‐fusion strategy for positioning the reactive sites in proximity to promote oxidative cyclization offers a new approach for constructing large porphyrinoids through conjugated oligopyrrins without the assistance of metal ions. A series of new porphyrin dyes (XW42–XW44) containing oligo(ethylene glycol) units have been designed and synthesized. Two triethylene glycol units were introduced into the phenothiazine moiety of XW42, whereas diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol chains were introduced to afford XW43 and XW44, respectively. Interestingly, the efficiencies of the DSSCs were clearly dependent on the chain lengths. Among the three dyes, XW42 and XW43 exhibited relatively high open‐circuit voltages of 751 and 750 mV, respectively, and XW43 exhibited the highest efficiency of 10.32 % owing to the presence of the DEG chains with suitable lengths and excellent ability to trap Li+. Furthermore, through a combined coadsorption and cosensitization approach, the efficiencies were dramatically enhanced. As a result, a highest efficiency of 12.10 % was obtained for the XW43+chenodeoxycholic acid+PT‐C6 (a metal‐free organic dye) system, which ranks among the highest efficiencies of cells based on the traditional iodine electrolyte. A hybrid thia‐norhexaphyrin comprising a directly linked N‐confused pyrrole and thiophene unit (1) revealed unique macrocycle transformations to afford multiply inner‐annulated aromatic macrocycles. Oxidation with 2,3‐dichloro‐5,6‐dicyano‐1,4‐benzoquinone triggered a cleavage of the C−S bond of the thiophene unit, accompanied with skeletal rearrangement to afford unique π‐conjugated products: a thiopyrrolo‐pentaphyrin embedded with a pyrrolo[1,2]isothiazole (2), a sulfur‐free pentaphyrin incorporating an indolizine moiety (3), and a thiopyranyltriphyrinoid containing a 2H‐thiopyran unit (4). Furthermore, 2 underwent desulfurization reactions to afford a fused pentaphyrin containing a pyrrolizine moiety (5) under mild conditions. Using expanded porphyrin scaffolds, oxidative thiophene cleavage and desulfurization of the hitherto unknown N‐confused core‐modified macrocycles would be a practical approach for developing unique polypyrrolic aromatic macrocycles. Oxidation of a nonaromatic thia‐modified norhexaphyrin with directly linked N‐confused pyrrole and thiophene rings triggered cleavage of a C−S bond to afford three multiply annulated polypyrrolic aromatic macrocycles with global or local aromaticity. Porphyrin dyes containing the carbazole electron donor have been designed and optimized by wrapping the porphyrin framework, introducing an additional ethynylene bridge to extend the wavelength range of light absorption, and further suppression of the dye aggregation by introducing additional alkoxy chains. Application of a cosensitization approach results in improved current density ( Jsc) and open-circuit voltage ( Voc) values, thus achieving the highest cell efficiency of 10.45 %. This work provides an effective combined strategy of molecular design and cosensitization for developing efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Two complementary examples of porphyrin nanoarchitectonicsare presented. The fabrication of binary molecular monolayers usingtwo different porphyrin molecules, tetrakis(3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (1) and tetrakis(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (2), by depositionin ultrahigh vacuum was demonstrated. Two unusual heteromolecularmonolayer structures were observed, with one exhibiting good separationof 1molecules within the monolayer. Also, a syntheticnanoarchitectonic approach was used to prepare self-assembled molecularnanowires at a mica substrate. The nanowires could be observed togrow using atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the network structuresof the nanowires could be influenced by manipulation using the AFMprobe tip. The porphyrin macrocycle is one of the most frequently investigated functional molecular entities and can be incorporated into advanced functional nanomaterials upon formation of organized nanostructures. Thus, study of the science and technology of porphyrin assemblies has attracted many organic, biological and supramolecular chemists. A wide variety of nanostructures can be obtained by supramolecular self-assembly because the porphyrin moiety is amenable to chemical modifications through thoughtful synthetic design and moderate preparative effort. Some recent developments in porphyrin assembly, obtained through various supramolecular approaches, are briefly summarized. Topics described in this review are classified into four categories: (i) non-specific assemblies; (ii) specific assemblies; (iii) assemblies in organized films; (iv) molecular-level arrangement. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have attracted intensive attention in developing photovoltaic devices for employing solar energy. For developing panchromatic and efficient porphyrin sensitizers, it has been demonstrated to be an effective approach to introduce an electron-withdrawing benzothiadiazole unit as an extra electron acceptor. In contrast, the structurally similar benzotriazole moiety remains relatively unknown in this respect. In this work, we have synthesized a novel porphyrin dye containing an extra electron acceptor of benzotriazole. Photophysical and electrochemical investigations revealed red-shifted absorption and a narrower band gap induced by the benzotriazole unit. Thus, a reasonable efficiency of 8.39% has been achieved with a J sc of 17.00 mA cm −2 and a V oc of 712 mV. On this basis, to investigate the effect of the dihedral angle between the benzotriazole and the adjacent phenylene ring, one or two methyl groups were attached to the ortho -positions of the phenylene ring. As a result, the enlarged torsion angles induce poor electronic coupling between the LUMO of the dyes and TiO 2 , resulting in lower efficiencies of 6.61% and 3.62%, respectively. With the purpose to further improve the efficiencies, coadsorption and cosensitization approaches were employed. And the efficiencies have been successfully elevated to 9.32%, 8.49% and 7.34%, respectively. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of incorporating an auxiliary benzotriazole acceptor into porphyrin dyes on achieving extended light-harvesting wavelength ranges and illustrate the importance of avoiding severe torsion within the acceptor part of the porphyrin dyes. In contrast to the commonly used cosensitizers with absorption peaks lying in the absorption valley between the Soret band and the Q bands of porphyrin dyes (500–600 nm), the utilization of an organic dye with broad absorption in this work has been demonstrated to be effective for improving the efficiencies despite the fact that its absorption peak at 450 nm largely overlaps with the Soret band of the porphyrin dyes. Biothiols, such as cysteine (Cys), homocysteine (Hcy), and glutathione (GSH), play essential roles in many physiological and pathological processes. In this work, three porphyrin derivatives, XQ1 , XQ2 and XQ3 , were synthesized by combining the porphyrin framework with nitroethylene, bis(methoxycarbonyl)ethylene and dicyanoethylene moieties, respectively. XQ1 was almost nonfluorescent, which could be utilized as a good starting point for developing fluorescence turn-on probes. Thus, XQ1 exhibits fast fluorescence enhancement and high selectivity towards the biothiols based on the Michael addition mechanism. It also exhibits high sensitivity towards the biothiols with the detection limits of 0.65–1.1 μM. In addition, XQ1 was successfully applied to cell imaging in living A549 cells for visualizing the biothiols. The results compose a good example of designing porphyrin derivatives for detecting biothiols, with the advantages of dramatic fluorescence enhancement in the NIR wavelength range, which exhibits good cell membrane permeability and practicability in detecting both exogenous and endogenous biothiols. With the purpose to develop efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), a series of push-pull porphyrin dyes have been designed and optimized by introducing additional electron-donating diphenylamino and electron-withdrawing benzothiadiazole moieties. Electrochemical, photophysical and photovoltaic investigations indicate that the introduction of additional donors and acceptors can effectively extend the absorption spectra, resulting in better sunlight harvesting. However, the HOMO levels of the dyes are elevated by the additional donors, resulting in decreased driving forces for dye regeneration and decreased cell efficiencies. Upon coadsorption with 5 mM chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), the cell efficiencies can be elevated from 1.37% - 5.01% to 1.70% - 6.97%. Furthermore, based on the subtle absorption characteristics of the porphyrin dyes, we delicately designed a cocktail co-sensitization strategy using the solutions containing two of the porphyrin dyes as well as CDCA. Finally, a high photovoltaic efficiency of 8.6% was successfully achieved at an optimized molar ratio of 10:1 for the two porphyrin dyes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Four alkoxy-wrapped push-pull porphyrin dyes containing the phenothiazine derived donor and the ethynylbenzoic acid acceptor have been designed, synthesized and used as sensitizers for fabricating efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Branched or linear alkoxy chains were introduced to the ortho -positions of the meso- phenyl moieties to suppress the dye aggregation and charge recombination. The effect of alkoxy chains were investigated in the absence and presence of an additional electron-withdrawing benzothiadiazole unit. In the former cases, almost identical photovoltaic efficiencies of ∼8.3% were achieved for both the branched and the linear alkoxy chains, while in the latter cases, the planar benzothiadiazole unit induces serious dye aggregation and charge recombination, resulting in lower efficiencies of 6.46% and 7.50% for the linear and branched chains, respectively, even though broader absorption was achieved. The relatively higher efficiency achieved for the dyes with branched chains may be related to the better effect of suppressing the dye aggregation and charge recombination. Furthermore, the coadsorption approach was employed, and a highest efficiency of 9.62% was achieved for the dye that features branched chains and the benzothiadiazole unit. These results compose a novel approach for developing efficient DSSCs by combining the coadsorbent with a porphyrin dye containing both the additional benzothiadiazole acceptor and branched alkoxy chains. In the past decades, porphyrin analogues have attracted increasing attention in light of their unique properties and potential applications in various areas. In this work, novel nonconjugated thiophene-embedded N -confused homoporphyrins 1 and 2 as well as a fully-conjugated N -fused homoporphyrin 3 have been prepared through acid-catalyzed condensation reactions followed by oxidation. Both 1 and 2 comprise two meso-sp3-carbon atoms. However, they are insensitive to the air or common oxidants. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that 2 adopts a highly distorted boat-like conformation, with the NH moieties of two pyrrolic units pointing outwards and an O atom attached to the α position of the N -confused pyrrole unit. As a result, hydrogen-bonded dimers are formed through the intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the lactam-like moieties. In contrast to the highly distorted structure of 2 , N -fused homoporphyrin 3 contains a unique 5,5,5–tricyclic fused ring, and thus demonstrates a relatively coplanar conformation except one inverted pyrrole unit. Because of the different structural characters, 3 exhibits F− binding behavior distinct from that of 1 and 2. To fabricate efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), three porphyrin dyes XW65 − XW67 have been designed and synthesized using a bulky triphenylamine donor. Based on our previously reported dyes with a carbazole donor, a bulky triphenylamine unit was employed as the donor to synthesize XW65 with the aim to enhance the electron donating ability and suppress dye aggregation. As a result, XW65 shows enhanced photocurrent density (J sc) and open circuit voltage (V oc), affording a high efficiency of 9.02%. On this basis, XW66 was synthesized with a methyl group introduced into the carboxyphenyl acceptor to further suppress dye aggregation and improve the V oc , achieving an enhanced efficiency of 9.23% with improved V oc of 849 mV and J sc of 14.87 mA cm−2, which can be ascribed to the further suppressed dye aggregation and enhanced adsorption amount on the TiO 2 film induced by the additional methyl group. To further improve the J sc , a benzothiadiazole (BTD) unit has been introduced as the auxiliary acceptor to afford XW67 , which exhibits a strikingly red-shifted monochromatic photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) onset wavelength of 830 nm, obtaining the highest J sc value of 15.83 mA cm−2 among the three dyes. Consequently, despite the sacrifice of V oc caused by the severe dye aggregation associated the extended conjugation framework, XW67 exhibits the highest efficiency of 9.43%. On this basis, cosensitization with WS-5 afforded elevated efficiencies of 10.07%, 10.38% and 10.13% for XW65 − XW67 , respectively, owing to the simultaneously enhanced J sc and V oc. These results indicate that it is effective to develop efficient DSSCs based on cosensitization of optimized porphyrin dyes containing a bulky triphenylamine donor, a methyl group on the carboxyphenyl acceptor, and an auxiliary electron acceptor. Three porphyrin sensitizers XW54 – XW56 containing a carbazole donor have been designed and synthesized by introducing a benzothiadiazole (BTD) unit as the auxiliary electron acceptor to extend the absorption spectra and/or bulky dihexyloxyphenyl groups into the carbazole unit to suppress dye aggregation and improve the photovoltage (V oc). The BTD unit incorporated in XW54 obviously broadens and red-shifts the absorption threshold to ca. 700 nm, as compared with that of 650 nm observed for XW1. Thus, XW54 exhibits a much broader monochromatic photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) spectrum with an extremely red-shifted onset wavelength of 780 nm, resulting in a photocurrent density (J sc) of 11.60 mA cm−2, higher than that of XW1. Unfortunately, the V oc value was decreased owing to the more severe dye aggregation caused by the large conjugation framework induced by the presence of the BTD unit. As a result, XW54 shows an efficiency of 6.26%, slightly higher than that of 6.11% obtained for XW1. On the other hand, with the bulky dihexyloxyphenyl donor groups introduced to XW55 , a highest V oc of 860 mV was achieved, which can be ascribed to the efficient prevention of charge recombination and suppression of dye aggregation. Thus, XW55 -based cells exhibit an improved efficiency of 6.60%. On the basis of XW54 and XW55 , two bulky dihexyloxyphenyl groups and a BTD unit were simultaneously introduced to XW56 , affording a highest efficiency of 7.03%, with the J sc and V oc values of 12.5 mA cm−2 and 785 mV, respectively. These results compose a novel approach for developing efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) by simultaneously introducing bulky dihexyloxyphenyl groups and a benzothiadiazole unit, which may synergistically broaden the absorption spectra and suppress the dye aggregation, resulting in improved photocurrent and photovoltage.
