This study takes the teaching innovation of compulsory basketball courses as the research object in the context of teaching innovation of information technology in physical education disciplines in Chinese higher education. It adopts the method of using literature, action research and mathematical statistics. An experimental study was conducted on the application of the offline combined with online group flipped classroom teaching model in the basketball major compulsory course to explore the impact of the model on improving students' basketball instructional design ability. The experiment shows that the post-test t-test result of instructional design ability is -32.217 with a p-value of 0.000, and the experimental group is significantly better than the control group in terms of instructional design ability. It is concluded that the application of offline combined with online group flipped classroom teaching model can very significantly improve students' basketball instructional design ability. The aim is to construct a scientific and feasible teaching practice model for the teaching innovation of physical education courses, and to promote the educational quality change and teaching innovation of physical education professional courses.

A mixed-methods study was used to determine if an online, mastery-based learning resource was successful in improving content knowledge and retention of critical elements and developmental stages of 16 fundamental movement skills (FMS); a secondary purpose was to determine participant perceptions of their experience with the online resource. Participants (N = 323; motor development (MD) = 94; movement education (ME) = 124; elementary physical education (EPE) = 105) were Teacher Candidates (TCs) in a Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) Program. Pre- and post-survey data, and pre-, post-, and retention test scores were used to evaluate the program's effectiveness. Paired samples t-tests indicated higher post-test scores for MD ([delta]37.23, p < 0.001, d = 2.32) and ME ([delta]32.12, p < 0.001, d = 1.72). Results from a one-way ANOVA indicated significant improvement and retention of test scores over time, F(3, 331) = 27.761, p < 0.001, [eta-squared] = 0.963. Perceptions of PETE TCs reported positive reactions to the use of the online modules to improve their ability to analyze FMS. Based on these findings, the authors propose that implementing an online, mastery-based resource to analyze FMS may be a positive learning experience for TCs and could lead to long-term content knowledge acquisition of critical elements of FMS.

The current study was conducted to investigate the relationship between occupational personality types, 21st-century skills, and teaching motivation. The study was conducted in the descriptive relational survey model, one of the quantitative research methods. The study group consisted of all the students attending the Physical Education Teaching Department at Faculty of Sports Sciences of Mugla Sitki Koçman University. A total of 148 (F=59, M=89) students were included in the study. The questionnaire method was employed to collect the data in the study. The questionnaire consists of four parts: a personal information form in the first part and three scales in the following three parts. In the second part, there is the "21st Century Skills Self-Efficacy Perception Scale" consisting of 42 items, in the third part, there is the "Occupational Personality Types Inventory" consisting of 30 items and in the fourth part, there is the "Teaching Motivation Scale" consisting of 12 items. The SPSS v22 program package was used in the analysis of the collected data. As a result of the study, a significant correlation was found between occupational personality types and 21st-century skills self-efficacy perceptions, between the six personality types of occupational personality and intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and between 21st-century skills self-efficacy perceptions and intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. According to the results of regression analyses, occupational personality types had a significant effect on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

Given that teacher dropout is an issue for beginning teachers, it is important to be proactive in order to retain teachers within the profession. Physical Education pre-service teachers' education programs represent a crucial part of their professional development in preparing them to face the challenges that often explain retirement, especially students' motivation. Authors recognize the importance of considering pre-service teachers' needs during teacher education programs and their concerns about the challenges to be faced once they start teaching (Richards et al., 2013). Using a qualitative approach, this study aims to: (1) identify pre-service Physical Education teachers' perceptions of anticipated challenges in general, (2) identify the specific challenges they anticipate about supporting students' motivation and (3) describe how they can be prepared to support students' motivation. Participants consisted of 18 pre-service Physical Education teachers (M[subscript age] = 25; SD = 3.61 years) from French-language universities in Quebec (Canada). Four focus groups were conducted, and data were analyzed consistent with the four steps suggested by Boutin (2007). Results indicate that the main challenges anticipated by pre-service Physical Education teachers are classroom management and students' lack of motivation. In terms of supporting students' motivation, five specific challenges were highlighted: (1) student heterogeneity, (2) proposal of learning activities to support motivation, (3) student engagement, (4) management of disengaged students, and (5) gender differences. As for their needs during teacher education program, participants wished to learn how to plan motivational strategies, be given more opportunities to practice, and discuss how to implement these strategies. Recommendations for teacher education programs are discussed in the conclusion.

The study determined the self-reported Zoom exhaustion and fatigue (ZEF) levels of physical education teacher education (PETE) students in the Philippines who are attending a flexible learning setup (i.e., synchronous and asynchronous learning) offered by their university as a solution to continue classes during the coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 pandemic. Utilizing a cross-sectional comparative research design, the study indicates that PETE students were very tired and exhausted both in general and visually after a series of video conferencing within a semester. Furthermore, they were socially-, motivationally-, and emotionally- moderately tired and exhausted. It was observed that students in the PETE program experienced moderate to very tired and exhausted levels of fatigue whenever they participated in synchronous online classes, such as attendance at a video teleconferencing platform. Exploration of how specific mental aspects relate to their general health with regard to their culture and habits is worth exploring, either for students, teachers, or professionals in general.

Interprofessional Education (IPE) prepares students in the healthcare field for collaborative practices. Faculty perceptions of IPE have been investigated among several health professions. We assess athletic training (AT) faculty perceptions of the importance of the four IPE competencies, their attitudes towards IPE, their attitudes and beliefs about IPE in the academic settings, their perceived barriers, and opportunities towards implementing IPE in AT curricula; and how these have changed. This study utilized a cross-sectional online survey administered anonymously in 2017 and 2022. The study population was faculty from accredited AT education programs in the USA identified through the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA). We find that in the last five years, faculty perception of IPE has shifted to a more positive attitude toward understanding and implementing IPE in AT programs. However, data showed no significant differences between the initial and follow-up studies. Values and ethics and teams and teamwork were the two competencies ranked the highest in both studies. Younger respondents ranked communication higher than older respondents. Barriers to IPE implementation included lack of resources, allocated funding, and institutional support. The creation of an IPE program coordinator was one of the opportunities highlighted. Faculty of AT programs are aware of the importance of IPE and demonstrated a general positive attitude toward implementing IPE in their AT curricula. However, several barriers have been identified, including a perceived negative attitudes toward AT from other health professions.

In online learning as a form of distance education, "Learning Management Systems (LMS)" have become one of the most dynamic forms of higher education today. LMS components play an important role in assessing both the quality of online educational offerings and student performance. The focus of this study is whether LMS activities significantly predict student academic performance in online pedagogical education. The participants of the study consisted of 511 prospective physical education teachers taking pedagogical online education via LMS in the spring semester of 2022-2023 at a state college in Turkey. The study data consisted of the participants' learning activity assessments via LMS and their academic performance at the end of the semester. The learning activity scores were obtained from the LMS student tracking report and the end-of-semester academic performance scores were obtained from the college's "Student Information System (SIS)". The results of this study, in which correlation and hierarchical linear regression analyzes were conducted, showed that each online learning activity significantly predicted academic performance. The relative order of importance of learning activities on academic performance was found to be "number of course document downloads," "asynchronous course viewing time," "course video viewing time," and "synchronous course participation time." While the number of course document downloads alone explained 36% of the variation in academic performance scores, this variation increased to 41% with synchronous course participation time, 52% with asynchronous course viewing time, and finally 68% with course video viewing time. Although each LMS activity had a positive effect on academic performance, following lessons from downloaded documents, asynchronous lesson viewing, and video viewing were found to rank first in increasing academic performance, while synchronous course participation ranked last. Consequently, asynchronous LMS activities have a stronger impact on students' academic performance in online learning.

This study examined how preservice teachers (PSTs) develop adaptive competence in teaching peers in an introductory physical education pedagogy course underpinned by a pedagogical cycle designed to promote adaptive teaching competence. Two guiding research questions were: (a) what was the total number of adaptations that PSTs made in their peer teaching? and (b) what were the total numbers of missed content (MC) that PSTs had in their peer teaching? We used a descriptive-analytic study to evaluate teaching data from 22 PSTs. The course included different pedagogical strategies (e.g. discussing teaching scenarios, repeated teaching, and reflecting on teaching) to develop adaptive competence. A total of 85 teaching videos were analyzed using three coding variables (adaptations added, adaptation corrections, and MC) by comparing them with the PSTs' lesson plans. The descriptive analyses showed that all PSTs were able to make substantive and consistent teaching adaptations across the five-week period. The amount of MC decreased across the five weeks. This study demonstrated that the pedagogical cycle designed to promote adaptive teaching competence was effective in helping PSTs make adaptations to their teaching. Simply providing PSTs opportunities to teach or teach repetitively is not sufficient to develop adaptive competence. Intentional integration of the pedagogical strategies is essential to equipping PSTs with effective teaching skills and knowledge, and helping them connect theory and practice with ongoing feedback and reflection.

Teacher educators shape curriculum in the pedagogical decisions they make (Lunenberg et al., 2007). Yet, evidence is lacking about how physical education (PE) teacher educators make decisions about what to include in their teacher education pedagogies. Four teacher educators in four different PE teacher education (PETE) programmes collaborated to examine their decision-making as they explored ideas related to Meaningful PE and social justice pedagogies. Insight into how teacher educators make decisions can add nuance to understanding pedagogical decision-making in PETE. A self-study of teacher education practices frame supported collective and individual interrogation of our decision-making processes. Data included planning documentation for each teaching episode (n = 42), individual reflections (n = 33), recordings of conversations with critical friends (n = 15), and recordings of collective meetings (n = 8). Pedagogical confrontations (Moran et al., 2019) provided a lens for each teacher educator to gain perspective and insight into their decision-making related to Meaningful PE and social justice pedagogies The findings are presented in the form of four individual cases that illustrate the distinct story of each teacher educator's engagement with Meaningful PE and social justice pedagogies. Teacher educators' decisions were guided by their purposes and influenced by their contexts. Additionally, peers were an important source of pedagogical confrontations to influence decision-making practices. This research contributes to the understanding of innovation in PETE by illustrating how clarity about priorities promotes deliberate decision-making by teacher educators resulting in adoption or rejection of innovation.

This paper reports on the first phase of a longitudinal project investigating the perceived purposes that different stakeholders have for primary physical education (PE). In the study, the views of 19 teacher educators from seven countries across Europe were sought. While teacher educators may have some influence across the layers of an education system, little is known about this stakeholder group and their views about primary PE. Analysis of focus group conversations depicts that, while the teacher educators come from a wide range of contexts, their views on the purposes of primary PE were more similar than different. With primary PE in danger of disconnecting into different schools of thought, this finding is important because it suggests that more coherent and connected approaches have the potential to be developed. In line with most government policies from the seven countries, similarities focused on both an educational and outward-looking view of primary PE. Significantly, while the teacher educators recognised the key role of physical learning in primary PE, they also highlighted how children's social, emotional, and cognitive learning form part of an integrated view of primary PE. Teacher educators recognised the importance of primary PE expanding beyond the hall/gymnasium and into classroom, school, and community settings. However, some concerns were voiced about the influence of outsourcing and sport agendas that currently dominate. The views of these teacher educators offer a useful starting point for further investigation, particularly as they present the purposes of primary PE from both an integrated and educational perspective.

The goal of this study was to predict the preservice physical education teachers' (PPETs) occupational socialization (OS) by their pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and to investigate the relationship between them. The participants were 56 PPETs from a physical education teacher education (PETE) undergraduate program in the northeastern United States. This research work utilized the mixed-methods research design. An online survey with the PCK standard test, the teachers' occupational beliefs survey, and a semistructured interview were used to collect data. The PPETs' PCK significantly predicted their OS. More PCK would lead to more positive and professional OS development. Furthermore, the methods classes were the most important resource to learn PCK and develop the OS of the PPETs. There is a close and direct relationship between PPETs' PCK and OS, and early field experience (EFE) is a common carrier. It is possible to use PPETs' PCK to infer their OS development, and quantitative methods are effective for examining both factors. PETE programs should purposefully set up EFEs to improve PPETs' PCK and OS simultaneously.

The interruption of regular physical exercise among Chinese college students is a key cause of the lack of motivation to exercise. Therefore, on the basis of self-efficacy theory, this study analysed the interrelationships between the perception of transformational leadership in physical education (PE) by teachers, physical self-efficacy, and exercise adherence among Chinese college students. A questionnaire survey was conducted using a convenience sample of 448 students from five universities in Hebei Province, China. They perceived transformational leadership by PE teachers to significantly positively influence exercise adherence. In addition, physical self-efficacy partially mediated the relationship between college students' perceptions of transformational leadership by PE teachers and exercise adherence. These findings suggest that university administrators could encourage PE teachers to make greater use of transformational leadership and improve education and guidance regarding physical self-efficacy for college students to promote exercise adherence.

Introduction: Different international guidelines indicate the need for improving educational procedures. This study aims to contribute to the professional development training program of higher education professors from a Physical Education Teacher Education degree in México. Methodology: This qualitative study used a participatory action research design through four cycles: (a) diagnosis; (b) elaboration of the action plan; (c) implementation and evaluation; and (d) feedback. The participants were the professor, six experts, and 17 students. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with students and the professor, the analysis of the class syllabus, and nonparticipatory observations. Findings: The importance of carrying out a diagnostic cycle allowed us to identify the specific needs of the class. Similarly, the model of development and evaluation of academic competencies (M-DECA) allowed the professor to develop specific pedagogical and disciplinary competencies from the training program. Conclusion: A continuous professional development training program for university professors in pedagogical and disciplinary strategies generates better learning results. The inclusion of innovative content in the class syllabus was also crucial.

Working with trauma-affected youth in physical education (PE) can be a challenging and, at times, stressful and emotionally demanding process. Whilst little is known about how student trauma affects in-service teachers, even less is known about how it might impact pre-service PE teachers. The aims of this paper are therefore to (1) explore pre-service PE teachers' experiences of working with students affected by trauma, and (2) consider the potential implications of this for their well-being. Through an online professional learning programme, we worked with three distinct groups of pre-service PE teachers (n = 22). The workshops generated data through individual activities and group tasks that allowed participants to reflect on their experiences. Findings revealed that pre-service teachers had several encounters during their school-based placements with young people who may have experienced trauma. These experiences were felt by the pre-service PE teachers -- both emotionally and physically. Pre-service PE teachers were encouraged to develop self-care strategies; however, our participants indicated that this was not always easy to do. That said, pre-service PE teachers were able to describe some of the strategies they engaged with to take care of themselves and safeguard their own well-being. Many of these strategies were relational and involved spending time with others -- such as school colleagues (teachers and/or mentors) -- who were available to offer both practical and emotional guidance and support. Thus, our findings reinforce the importance of pre-service teachers learning about self-care and emotional regulation as part of initial teacher education courses.

Assessment is a key element in the teaching-learning process in physical education (PE). In 2020, the Association Internationale des Écoles Supérieures d'Éducation Physique (AIESEP) published a position statement on PE assessment, in which it reviews the current state of the field and establishes the current yet forward-looking main lines of research on this topic. The most widely used approach, which this article reviews in depth, is assessment for learning (AfL). In Spain, the most widespread approach employed in PE throughout primary and secondary education in the last 25 years has been formative and shared assessment, which clearly aligns with the AIESEP position statement. The objective of this study was to gain an understanding of the main contributions of the formative and shared assessment model in PE and PE teacher education (PETE). Four databases (ERIC, SCOPUS, WOS and DIALNET) were explored, and 51 documents were selected on which an inductive thematic analysis was conducted. The evidence obtained at different educational levels and contexts seems to show a positive influence of formative and shared assessment on learning outcomes, which has favoured the expansion of the model, especially in PETE. Research on the transfer of PETE to educational practice has indicated that adequate continuing professional development seems necessary to help teachers integrate formative and shared assessment in their PE classroom. In conclusion, this model can provide an answer to some of the current questions being raised at an international level about PE assessment, especially in relation to students' involvement in the assessment process and its role in PETE.

Scholars have long questioned the impact of teacher education programmes. Persistent claims are that pre-service teachers have fixed ideas about pedagogy when they enter training and that they become enculturated once in the profession. Within physical education (PE), similar concerns have been raised with respect to ball games. Research suggests that pre-service PE teachers typically have substantial experience of ball sports and find it difficult to implement non-traditional ball games pedagogies when they enter schools. Against this background, the aim of the study is to explore how pre-service teachers recontextualise ball games as pedagogic discourse in their transitions from university to school placement. Bernstein's pedagogic device and pedagogic discourse are employed as the theoretical framework. The investigation focuses on a Swedish PETE programme and the participants are six pre-service teachers. The empirical material consists of written assessments, observations of the pre-service teachers' lessons during school placements, and individual interviews. Findings suggest that the pedagogic discourse of ball games at the university was aligned with course learning outcomes and included the need to communicate goals, adapt and modify teaching, and combine different approaches. The pedagogic discourse at school placement involved traditional ball games, minimal curriculum references, progression in two or three lessons, and inclusive, enjoyable lessons. Factors that regulated the discourse were: familiarity with the pupils; the conceptualizing of inclusive teaching; norms regarding ball games in PE; expectations of the pre-service teachers; and the framing of ball games education in PETE. Recontextualising rules highlight challenges in transitions related to ball games.

This year-long action research (AR) study, conducted in the context of a physical education teacher education (PETE) program in Portugal, explored how critical reflection among preservice teachers (PSTs) developed in response to tailored questioning by an external facilitator (EF). Participants were six PSTs and the first author, who assumed the dual role of EF and researcher. Four AR cycles, each involving a self-reflection analysis, intervention, and the development of the PSTs' reflections were completed. During each AR cycle, the EF examined the PSTs' teaching-learning practices and views and generated tailored questions to support critical reflection. Data were collected through focus group interviews and written reflective journals. The EF also made participant observations to contextualize each PST's teaching-learning process, resulting in field notes. Using various question types (e.g. leading, probing, and procedural next-step questions) designed to address individual needs, PSTs progressed from a basic reflection level to thinking critically about their teaching-learning practices. The questions were helpful for PSTs in interpreting daily issues faced in teaching-learning and understanding the relevance of self-analysis and attention to learners' needs in fostering critical reflection. Given these results, we recommend that PETE programs incorporate a component or module explicitly promoting reflection on and analysis of PSTs' pedagogical practices.

Differentiated instruction remains one of the most important frameworks for the global education community to achieve sustainable educational development goals and inclusive education. It is also one of the most critical challenges for teachers in different subjects. This study used structural equation modeling to examine the role of teachers' practices and beliefs in implementing differentiated instruction in physical education. Using a sample of 527 preservice teachers, we found that a growth mindset was the strongest predictor of differentiated instruction, followed by flexible grouping and differentiating the curriculum. In addition, multiple mediation analyses revealed that differentiating the curriculum and flexible grouping mediated the relationship between a growth mindset and differentiated instruction. We also guide teacher educators to develop teachers' growth mindsets and help teachers better understand differentiated instruction in physical education.

This study was conducted to examine the effect of design thinking on the creative thinking of physical education and sports teacher candidates. The research group of the study, which was created by using the pretest-posttest single-group experimental design, consisted of 14 women and 15 men, who were studying at Ankara University, Faculty of Sport Sciences, Physical Education and Sports Teaching Program and taking the Community Service Practices lesson in the fall semester of the 2022-2023 academic year and it consisted of 29 students in total. As a data collection tool, the "How Much You Have Created Scale" developed by Whetton and Cameron (2002) and adapted into Turkish by Aksoy (2004) and the "Demographic Information Form" prepared by the researchers were used. In this study, the Stanford design thinking model was applied to physical education and sports teacher candidates for 9 weeks in the community service practices lesson. According to the results of the analysis, it was observed that there was a significant change in the pre-test and post-test scores of the physical education and sports teacher candidates from the creative thinking scale after the application. The findings reveal that the design thinking approach is effective in developing the creative thinking of physical education and sports teacher candidates.

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between physical education teacher candidates' epistemological beliefs and academic self-efficacy beliefs. The research group consisted of a total of 220 preservice physical education teachers (age = 22.32 ± 1.514), 99 female (45%) and 121 male (55%), studying at the Faculties of Sport Sciences of four different universities in the 2022-2023 academic year. A correlational survey model was adopted to examine the relationship between physical education teacher candidates' epistemological beliefs and academic self-efficacy levels. The personal information form and Epistemological Belief Scale that Schommer (1990) developed and Deryakulu and Büyüköztürk (2002) adapted and the Academic Self-Efficacy scale that Ekici (2012) developed consisting of three sub-dimensions and 33 questions were used as data collection tools. It was found that preservice physical education teachers had high levels of epistemological beliefs, and it was determined that the academic self-efficacy levels of the teachers were low.

The iterative process of writing a co-authored manuscript may take several months to complete. Draft-in-a-day is an alternative group-based approach to writing that draws on concepts from social cognitive and group dynamics theories to efficiently write the first draft of a manuscript, while providing rich opportunities for trainees to develop their writing skills. The purpose of this paper is to explore the usefulness and acceptability of draft-in-a-day by examining individual's experiences using the draft-in-a-day protocol. Twelve participants (four professors, eight trainees) who had used the draft-in-a-day protocol completed an online questionnaire about their experiences. Participant responses were analyzed using Braun and Clark's (2006) thematic analysis. There were four broad themes: group/social aspects, writing process, effectiveness/efficiency, and other. Overall, participants found a benefit to using the draft-in-a-day protocol for team-based writing. Participants were receptive to the draft-in-a-day method of writing, reported being very likely to use it in the future (M = 4.9, SD = 0.28; scale 1-5), and provided suggestions for improvement. This early-stage research provides a framework for efficient group-based writing in sport and exercise psychology.

Background and Aim: Physical activity is an important means to promote the comprehensive and healthy development of children's bodies and minds. The national health strategy and population policy adjustment, the development of kindergartens, and the deterioration of children's physical health have all worked together to bring unprecedented opportunities for the development of children's sports in China. The purpose of this paper is to study the background information of the contents of the curriculum of preschool physical education ability of year 4 students and develop the curriculum to improve the preschool physical education ability of year 4 students. Materials and Methods: The researcher has studied the literature on the development of physical education teachers' physical education ability curriculum to cultivate year 4 students' physical education ability from the aspects of the curriculum development process, components, implementation, and evaluation, and has studied the quality of students' teachers from textbooks, academic documents, and related research. The researcher also used a simple random sampling method to have 4 teachers as a sample. The population is 8 expert teachers in physical education. The research instruments of this study are an interview questionnaire on preschool's physical education ability and lesson plans. Results: Research findings: 1) The 6 components of the course include principles, objectives, content, instructional strategies using situational teaching methods, materials, and evaluation. 2) Preschool physical education ability which includes: 2.1) General ability, 2.2) Special ability, and 2.3) Application ability. After that, the researcher designed and completed the training course components of preschool physical education, and then evaluated the quality by five experts. The IOC value was between 3.80-4.00, and the interrater reliability value was between 0.77-0.79> 0.5. The course components were modified according to the experts' suggestions. Conclusion: The components of the course which include 6 components could improve the preschool physical education ability of year 4 students effectively.

The rapid spread of COVID-19 has forced schools and universities to close. Globally, education systems face unprecedented challenges, and learning management systems (LMS) are the only solution. The current study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a Blackboard collaborative breakout group on the cognitive achievement of physical education teaching styles. The quasi-experimental method involved creating two groups: one experimental and one control, with the experimental group using Blackboard collaborative breakout groups and the control group relying exclusively on online lectures and continuing with the same method without breakout groups. The study sample consisted of 40 students who were randomly assigned and divided equally into the two groups. Based on the research sample, homogeneity within the group and equivalence between groups in terms of age, Grade Point Average (GPA), and high intelligence test (IQ) were evaluated. The results showed that the experimental group's cognitive achievement was superior to that of the control group. Therefore, the design of the learning process enhances student collaboration, participation, and reinforcement. Additionally, the experimental group retained the learning outcomes for a month after the cessation of all teaching and learning processes. To conclude, giving a lecture using webinar tools such as Blackboard Collaborate Ultra does not necessarily mean achieving the intended educational goals. As a result, it is necessary to look for ways to integrate active learning strategies, such as collaborative learning, to enhance student involvement in distance learning.

Physical education teachers in colleges and universities have the crucial responsibility of acting as mentors and guides for the healthy growth of students. The work engagement of these teachers affects the quality of higher education personnel training and health education. Based on the job demand-resource model, this study conducted a questionnaire survey on 500 physical education teachers in 20 colleges and universities in Hebei Province, China. The subjects were selected through convenience sampling. Out of the total, 456 valid questionnaires were recovered. The intermediary effect was tested through the AMOS model analysis and the Bootstrap method. The results revealed that the perceived organizational support of the participating physical education teachers in colleges and universities can positively affect their sense of teaching efficacy, which in turn positively affects work engagement and has a partial mediating effect on the relationship between perceived organizational support and work engagement.

Purpose: This study examined how physical education preservice teachers (PSTs) developed adaptive skills in the planning of the lessons in the 5 weeks of an introductory physical education method course using the practice-based teacher education framework. Method: Twenty-two PSTs edited three lesson plans over the 5 weeks. A total of 150 lesson plans were analyzed using descriptive statistics to explore (a) the total number of adaptations, (b) the total number of adaptations made to core practices, and (c) the types of adaptations. Findings: The PSTs made a wide-ranged number of adaptations from lesson plan one to three (one [median = 38.50, range 6-101]; two [median = 49.00, range 14-184]; three [median = 38.00, range 18-97]). They made adaptations most frequently in providing clear instruction and type two adaptations (refine). Conclusions: The results support the use of pedagogical approaches within the practice-based teacher education framework effective in developing PSTs' adaptive competence in lesson plans.

Purpose: To explore preservice teachers' (PSTs) implementation of cooperative learning (CL) during their school-based student-teaching after undertaking a CL course in a Chinese physical education teacher education program. Method: An interpretive qualitative case study design gathered data from eight PSTs using classroom observations, semistructured interviews, reflective journals, instructional materials, and field notes. Interactive cycling coding was used to analyze the data. Findings: The two themes, "putting five key elements into practice" and "learning to facilitate with CL," convey how the PSTs implemented the procedures of CL and adapted CL to the contexts they were teaching in. Discussion and Conclusions: The eight PSTs appropriately implemented CL and contextualized CL practice in their classrooms. They shifted their teaching approaches away from direct instruction and toward more independent, pupil group-based tasks. This growth is particularly important in the Chinese physical education context, where policies advocate for CL yet student-centered teaching which is rarely seen in practice.

Research has noted the constraints to applying constructivist pedagogical models such as Sport Education and Teaching Games for Understanding in practicing and prospective physical education teachers. This study was an investigation of prospective physical educators' preferences for Direct Teaching, Sport Education, and Teaching Games for Understanding in physical education and what they liked and disliked about each model. The sample consisted of 309 undergraduate physical education students who received preliminary training and experience with each instructional approach in an upper-level undergraduate university games course. There was substantial support for each of the three instructional models although students preferred Sport Education and Teaching Games for Understanding over Direct Teaching. These findings provide valuable insight into the relative strength and specificity of prospective physical educators' views about these models and evidence that, in settings where these models are explicitly taught and practiced, prospective physical educators can have progressive knowledge and beliefs about them.

This article focuses on a comparative analysis of traditional Physical Education games and experiential learning on the part of teacher candidates enrolled in an Ontario Faculty of Education and one in Southwest China. Funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) partnership grant for research on Reciprocal Learning between Canada and China, the researchers conducted a qualitative study interviewing ten teacher candidates from the reciprocal Faculties of Education. Emergent themes included risk-taking and resilience, willingness to implement foreign practices, division of sport-related skills, and daily physical activity (DPA). Findings suggest that DPA is overlooked in Canadian classrooms; Chinese teachers are more likely to implement foreign practices, and skills development in traditional PE games is disparate between Canada and China.

This study, it was aimed to determine the predisposition levels of teachers and pre-service teachers to ethical values. The sample of the study consisted of 1305 educators, 784 teachers, and 521 pre-service teachers in 15 different branches in the 2021-2022 academic year. The sample of the research conducted in the relational survey model was selected by a simple random sampling method. In the research, the Inclination to Ethical Values Scale developed by Kaya (2015) was used as a data collection tool. The scale has three dimensions: Love, justice, and cooperation. In the analysis of the data, mean, standard deviation, frequency, percentage, Mann-Whitney U test, and Kruskal Wallis test were used and .05 significance level was taken into account in the interpretation of the data. According to the research findings, teachers and pre-service teachers got very high scores on the scale. While there was no difference in gender for the level of susceptibility to ethical values; significant results were founded-determined in favor of teachers in terms of status; in favor of physical education teachers in-branch comparison; in favor of those with more than 16 years of service according to professional seniority and in favor of those who do regular physical activity. As a result of the research; it has been seen that teachers and pre-service teachers are very inclined to ethical values and they internalize the value of love the most. Planning functional pre-service and in-service training for pre-service teachers who have not yet started the profession or for teachers who are newly started to the profession. In-depth research is recommended to examine why teachers who engage in regular physical activity have a high ethical orientation.

The inclusion of physical education in the curriculum in the new normal, and with the mandate on the adoption of flexible learning at the tertiary level caused by the COVID-19 pandemic forced physical educators to do quaranteaching or teaching in the quarantine. This study described the lived experiences of physical education (PE) teachers in quaranteaching utilizing Edmund Husserl's phenomenological qualitative research design. A total of seven PE teachers from two universities participated in this study which achieved data saturation. Anchored to Colaizzi's phenomenological approach and guided by different philosophies, data were analyzed and presented in two prong clustering. The results revealed that tertiary PE teachers experienced difficulties and yet learnt to innovate in terms of teaching the course, assessing, monitoring, and giving feedback to students, dealing with the internet and technology, and handling physical and cognitive situations. It is recommended that tertiary PE teachers undergo pedagogical and technological trainings and workshops especially in the utilization of different learning platforms to help them improve their pedagogy and in the innovative use of digital tools and technologies to teach PE in the new normal. Purpose: The sudden shift from face-to-face to online learning compelled educators including physical educators to teach PE in the midst of quarantine, with no face-to-face interaction. This study described the experiences of tertiary PE teachers in teaching PE in the quarantine. Methodology: The study utilized the descriptive phenomenological qualitative research design by Edmund Husserl. The participants were seven PE teachers from two state universities in Cebu, Philippines, selected through purposive snowball sampling. Data gathered were analyzed through Colaizzi's approach of data analysis and presented in two prong clustering. Findings: The study revealed that the experiences of tertiary PE teachers in teaching PE during quarantine can be described under two classifications. They experienced difficulties and yet learnt to innovate in terms of teaching the course, assessing, monitoring, and giving feedback to students, using the internet and technology, and handling physical and cognitive situations. Significance: The study has provided a better understanding of PE teachers by revealing their challenges, struggles, needs, strengths and weaknesses in quaranteaching. Results of the study could serve as a basis for implementing trainings, workshops and webinars related to pedagogy and technology enhanced learning to assist PE teachers in teaching in the new normal.

Online learning democratizes and provides flexibility in accessing education, but it also places greater demands on students' self-regulated learning strategies. Previous studies have explored the important impact of effort regulation on academic performance. However, there remains more to explore on the dynamics of effort regulation among undergraduates and their group differences. This study investigates how the effort regulation of the learning process varies between achievement categories in an online learning environment using a sample of 240 undergraduates. Findings suggest that students in the high-achieving group had significantly higher effort regulation throughout the semester than their low-achieving counterparts on three dimensions: conversation, navigation, and click-through events. However, there were no significant differences in task time. Further test results also show that the high-performing students had significantly higher levels of engagement in all behaviours compared low-performing students during anaphase. Surprisingly, all students significantly lowered their effort levels near the final exam period. Results herein ultimately provide insight into the design of online learning environments.

This research responds to calls for the decolonization and indigenization of education and higher education spaces and institutions within Canada, specifically within the physical education (PE) and physical education teacher education (PETE) sub-disciplines. Recognizing our own responsibility to attend to decolonization and indigenization, we recently engaged in a collaborative self-study of our own teaching practice so that we might be better able to appropriately infuse Indigenous content and Treaty Education into our university's PETE program. We identified this goal -- infusing Indigenous content and Treaty Education -- as one that would support us on our reconciliatory journeys as we aim to decolonize and indigenize our PETE spaces in authentic, genuine, and meaningful ways. Our collaborative self-study yielded findings related to our PETE practice, framed herein as six themes. Four of these themes relate to the tensions observed and felt (pushing past performative fears, inviting imposter syndrome, honouring the local Mi'kmaq contexts/peoples, critical friend[ships] as key) and two of the themes relate to our perceived positive outcomes and additional potential happenings (knowing better/doing better, possibilities beyond 'simply' infusing Indigenous content and Treaty Education). A discussion of these findings is offered and would be especially insightful to others who are interested in or engaged with self-study, indigenization and decolonization, and/or PE and/or PETE.

With the rapid development of internet technology, the importance of data in various industries has become increasingly prominent. However, in the field of domestic education, especially the research on teaching quality evaluation is relatively sparse. This paper aims to build an evaluation model of physical education teaching quality with big data and machine learning in order to comprehensively evaluate teachers' physical education teaching ability. Firstly, a multi-dimensional evaluation system is designed to measure teachers' teaching level. Secondly, through the questionnaire and the statistical analysis of students' physical education teaching evaluation, the availability of the college physical education teaching evaluation system is verified. On this basis, a teacher's ability prediction model based on a neural network is established, and the experimental results show that the prediction accuracy of the model is 90.17%. This provides strong support for improving the quality of physical education teaching.

Guided by the bright and dark side described in Self-Determination Theory, and following hierarchical and integrative conceptualisation of motivational climates, the primary objective of this research was to test the predictive relationships between pre-service teachers' perceptions of educator-created (dis-)empowering climates and need-based and novelty-based experiences with their academic self-concept. Bearing in mind that the pre-service teachers' academic self-concept might vary depending on the knowledge domain, a secondary objective was to test invariance in the predictive model across the four knowledge domains (i.e. STEM, social studies, language, and physical education). The convenience sample included 1,410 pre-service secondary teachers (40.30% men; M[subscript age] = 23.85; SD[subscript age] = 5.13; domain: 23.2% STEM, 24.8% social studies, 30.5% language, and 21.4% physical education) who participated in this cross-sectional study. The results from the structural equation modelling showed positive relationships between an educator-created empowering climate and need and novelty satisfaction, and negative relationships with need and novelty frustration. A disempowering climate was positively associated with need and novelty frustration, and negatively related to novelty satisfaction. Need satisfaction and novelty satisfaction were positively associated with academic self-concept, while need frustration and novelty frustration were associated negatively. The paths were invariant across the knowledge domains of STEM, social studies, language, and physical education. The results show that, regardless of the knowledge domain, the educator-created motivational climate represents a differential social-contextual factor explaining the need-based and novelty-based experiences, and academic self-concept of pre-service teachers throughout their initial teacher education programme.

Background: In Belgium, and elsewhere, the use of portfolios as a reflective practice for pre-service primary and secondary teachers has long been established in higher education. Reflective thinking is recognised as an effective process for examining daily practices, awakening students to the key elements of their profession, and fostering lifelong learning. With the emergence of the competency-based approach to employability, the link between portfolio-based reflective practice and the development of students' employability competences remains to be explored. Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine how portfolios, as a reflective practice, can promote pre-service physical education (PE) teachers' reflective thinking and their employability competences, and to consider the support that might need to be offered to help pre-service teachers better reflect on their employability competences. Method: Qualitative research was conducted through semi-structured interviews with 16 pre-service PE teachers in one Belgian university. Thematic analysis, based on a dual deductive and inductive coding approach, was undertaken to discover patterns in the data. To investigate the role of portfolio-based reflective practice for reflection and employability, co-occurrences between the identified codes were examined. Findings: Analysis of the interview data showed that students used the portfolio as a reflective practice. The portfolio experience appeared to foster employability competences, particularly expertise, lifelong learning, social competences and efficacy beliefs. In addition, the portfolio enabled students to explore their beliefs and knowledge and to validate their assumptions and beliefs. The support of peers and tutors was crucial during this experience. Conclusion: Course designers may wish to improve portfolio use by thoughtfully incorporating all phases of reflective practice, encouraging students not only to reflect on their competence development but also to take meaningful action. Organising portfolios in a way that prompts students to draw on prior knowledge, beliefs, and experiences, while facilitating with key stakeholders, such as peers and teachers, could further support their professional development.

Sport- and physical activity-related participatory action research (PAR) often involves voluntary partnerships spanning institutions, organizations, and jurisdictions. Negotiating and maintaining multi-stakeholder and multi-jurisdictional research partnerships can be likened to a delicate balancing act fraught with potential challenges and strains impacting project outcomes (e.g., waning commitment, emerging external factors, new and/or revised stakeholder/organizational requirements, fidelity to the necessary care given when working with community partners and participants). This article presents PAR as a methodology in sport and physical activity that can potentially engage all research participants as co-researchers, sharing power equitably. Recognizing the need for continued attention and action in this area, we provide an overview of PAR in practice, identifying significant ideas and principles. Additionally, we outline Game Changers--a PAR project involving students with various disabilities, schools, PE teachers, coaches, national and community sport partners, and university researchers. Based on lessons learned from this multi-stakeholder and multi-jurisdictional research project, we interrogate the possibilities associated with engaging in PAR by exploring challenges and opportunities related to sport and physical activity-focused PAR.

Purpose Researching on lesson studies in initial training of physical education (PE) teachers in Portugal, our group is especially interested in the potential of this methodology for developing the pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) of future PE teachers. The purpose of the present text is to synthesize the knowledge relating to this subject. Design/methodology/approach Exploratory searches in four multiple search databases were carried out, resulting in 51 records. Information about authors, year of publication, purposes, methodology and results was collected and analyzed. Findings Results highlight the diversity of purposes. The interview is recurrent in the qualitative studies, while the questionnaire is used in all the large quantitative studies. Regarding the findings, it appears the centrality of PCK, its development potential and its measurability, the consistency of the concept and its evolutionary dynamics, as well as the constructive criticism of initial teacher training models and practices. Originality/value To emphasize the relationship between lesson studies and the development of PCK in initial teacher training of PE teachers.

This paper presents the lived experience of a practitioner researcher working as a teacher educator engaging in action research with primary pre-service teachers (PSTs). Aligning with the work of Cook (2009) ['The Purpose of Mess in Action Research: Building Rigour Though a Messy Turn.' "Educational Action Research" 17 (2): 277-291] this paper aims to make visible the decisions and reflections that occurred during the multiple cycles of action research that were significant in the transformations that occurred throughout the study. We argue that embracing and acknowledging the chaos and messiness of the process is essential to initiating change. Therefore, in making visible the often invisible actions and discomfort experienced this paper hoped to contribute as a catalyst for greater articulation of mess across research. Employing a seven-phase longitudinal action research approach, this paper draws on data from the practitioner researcher's reflective journal maintained throughout the research and field notes based on participant observation. The challenges, complexities, and benefits of action research are discussed including the impact on the research study and the practitioner researcher's practice as a teacher educator in primary physical education. Making visible the challenges of being comfortable in the uncomfortable elements of data collection, in accessing the PSTs, and the multiple roles of the researcher throughout the research are discussed.

Purpose: To investigate the adaptive competence of two physical education preservice teachers (PSTs) across two high school placements. Methods: TwoPSTseachtaughtfour6-lessonfrisbeeunitsacrosstwodifferenthighschools.Feedbackonlessonplans prior to teaching, guided reflection-on-action, and repeated teaching was used to support adaptations to six core teaching practices. PSTs made three iterations of each lesson plan. Results: PSTs made 589 adaptations across the core teaching practices of management (28%), task presentation (16%), content development (16%), active supervision (16%), goals and assessment (7%), and rules and routines (3%). Between 16% and 30% of adaptations were made in the last iteration. The number of adaptations decreased from the first to the second school placement and from Lessons 1 to 6. Conclusion: Feedback on lesson plans, guided reflection-on-action, and repeated teaching aided PSTs' development of adaptive competence during school placements.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the ways in which physical education teacher education (PETE) prepares preservice physical education teachers (PPETs) to select and implement appropriate assessments. Methods: PPETs (N = 14) enrolled in the secondary teaching methods course at two US universities participated in the study. Semi-structured interviews were completed to collect data concerning how assessment knowledge and skills were taught and learned. Constant content comparison method was used to analyze the data. Results: Two major themes with varying sub-themes emerged from the data: 'Scratching the surface of assessment with unclear learning objectives', and 'Perceiving the importance of assessment, but still not integrate it into instruction' Overall, assessment was not found to conjunctionally taught with instruction. School-based field experiences pertaining to assessment content and pedagogical knowledge were also weak. Conclusions: Minimum assessment knowledge and skills were taught in secondary methods courses with little field experience pertaining to assessment. Future research is needed on examining PETE program content and pedagogy courses to highlight the need for assessment instruction and transform our approaches to preparing PPETs.

Using occupational socialisation framework, the purpose of this study was to understand preservice physical education teachers' perceptions of and intention to utilise assessment in their future teaching practice. 41 preservice teachers were selected to participate across four universities in the southeast United States. Data was collected through individual and focus group interviews and was analysed thematically through deductive and inductive approaches. Trustworthiness included data triangulation, peer debriefing, negative case analysis, and the maintenance of an audit trail. Four main themes included: (a) prior contact with quality assessment was limited; (b) varying focus on assessment during PETE; (c) assessment is related to but separate from teaching; and (d) desire to use assessment, but uncertain how to use it effectively. Preservice teachers' desire to use assessment and how to use it in the future were influenced by their prospective PETE program preparation, however, largely related to their acculturation experiences.

Peer assessment has been proven to improve learning for both the observer and the observed. One dimension of peer assessment that has been given little attention in the context of physical education teacher education (PETE) is the tension that exists when peers give feedback on each other's work. In this paper, we report on Swedish preservice teachers' (PST) views on peer assessment used in PETE school placements. Our findings reveal four mechanisms of peer assessment assigned value in PETE: (i) building social relations, (ii) making 'what to learn' visible, (iii) giving correct feedback, and (iv) handling sensitive and gendered comments. Inspired by Bourdieu, we discuss learning potentials and complex challenges with peer assessment, where the combination of social capital and physical capital decides what is possible to say and to whom when peer assessment is used in the PETE school placement and in school physical education (PE).

Background: Background: Research demonstrates the benefits of communities of practice (CoP) for teachers' professional learning in Physical Education (PE). However, much less is known about how CoPs can be used to understand pre-service teachers' (PSTs) professional learning in their Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) programmes. Negotiation of meaning (NofM) is a crucial concept regarding learning inside of a CoP. Hence, understand how meaning is negotiated in initial teacher professional development might allow the enhancement of the social learning strategies in PETE programmes. Purpose: Purpose: This article draws on the CoP theoretical framework, and specifically the concept of NofM to understand how PSTs negotiated meaning during a two-year PETE programme. In particular, the focus is on the challenges faced by PSTs throughout the PETE social interactive process. Participants and settings: Participants and settings: The setting was a PETE programme in Portugal. In year one, the participants were three university teacher educators (TE) and 25 PSTs. In year two, the participants were three PSTs from year one who were in their school placement, a university supervisor (US) and one cooperating teacher (CT). Data collection and analysis: Data collection and analysis: This study was an ethnography with a two-year longitudinal design. Data were collected through the ethnographer's participant-observations (first author), meetings of the PSTs with the mentoring team (TEs, US, CT), and the ethnographer's field diary, reflexive log, and audio-recordings. Data analysis involved the constant-comparative grounded theory method. Findings: Findings: Analysis resulted in the identification of three key challenges during the course units, for PSTs in the first year of their PETE programme: (a) the diversity and disconnections within the course units; (b) (the lack of) membership; and (c) the absence of democratic spaces in PETE class discussions. In the year two of PETE during the school placement, three challenges were identified for the negotiation of meaning (NofM): (a) the lack of dialogue with and focus on pedagogical practice by the cooperating teacher; (b) working together and the pressure to individualise PSTs' education process; and (c) unreachable support and supervision from the university. Implications: Implications: We suggest that PETE programmes should emphasise pedagogical strategies that create spaces for the cultivation of CoPs. For instance, we suggest PST engagement in continuous and planned group work across curricular years (e.g. peer-teaching and micro-teaching experiences) to increase work group membership. We recommend the emphasis on discussion sessions mediated by a facilitator (e.g. TEs, CTs, or US) where the different working groups could share their repertoire of learning experiences as a CoP. Moreover, we suggest optimisation of a base of pedagogical knowledge regarding course units' integration between the TEs of the PETE to systematise the process and also, an increased connection between the university and the host school. Additionally, we propose continuous professional development by the CTs to facilitate the requirements of the PETE programme.

Drawing from a variety of conceptual and theoretical frameworks, this article provides a summary of decades of research into a university-district partnership that in multiple ways could be considered a systemic success. It describes the practices and processes of how two sectors of the broader physical education system (i.e., in-school physical education and teacher education) have complemented each other in the pursuit of the ongoing workforce development of physical education professionals. Physical education professionals belonging to the participating school district and teacher preparation program have sustained a working partnership based on sound professional learning community (PLC) principles (e.g., ongoing professional development, collaborative teaming, common vision, mission, and language, strong support from the central office) long before PLCs became fixtures in districts and schools. Indeed, this partnership could, in many respects, be described as a PLC before its time. This article highlights the partnership's early days and several features that have supported its success and longevity. It also offers supporting evidence from the perspectives of the students, parents, and teachers who have been associated with this partnership.

The inclusion of children with disabilities in physical education (PE) classes is of the utmost importance and is addressed in teacher training programmes through a range of courses, aimed at providing teachers with knowledge and tools for enhancing inclusion in their PE classes. This paper provides a scoping review of research papers on such courses that are conducted online. The search was conducted through Google Scholar, Sport Discus (via EBSCO Host), and PubMed databases, using two search term clusters: population and subject matter and teaching. Eight articles were then assessed according to participants, programme content and procedures, methodology and instruments, and outcomes and discussion. Four studies provide comparative online/face-to-face courses data between participants. One applied a mixed methods design, three were quantitative, and four were qualitative studies. Most of the findings indicate participant satisfaction with online courses on inclusive PE classes, with scores of knowledge and self-efficacy regarding such inclusion being similar to those seen in face-to-face courses. However, some studies lacked important background variables, such as gender and previous experience working with people with disabilities. The findings of this scoping review highlight several directions for future exploration of such online courses.

Weight stigma is the negative social judgment of people based on their weight. Despite the negative consequences of weight stigma, its prevalence is well-documented including within the physical activity (PA) landscape. Research shows that a wide range of PA-related professionals hold negative attitudes toward fat people, including physical education teachers, kinesiology students, and fitness trainers. This article describes a collaboration across disciplines and fields to develop a weight stigma reduction intervention for exercise professionals. Weight Inclusive Thinking for Fitness Spaces (WIT FITS) is a two-hour, self-paced, interactive online course grounded in the Health at Every Size® paradigm and research-informed strategies for improving exercise professionals' attitudes toward fatness and fostering weight inclusivity in fitness settings. WIT FITS was the result of a three-year interdisciplinary collaboration with scholars from pedagogy, public health, sport and exercise psychology, and nutrition. Community partners involved in the development, implementation, and evaluation of WIT FITS included body liberation activists, web and instructional designers, and campus recreation leaders.

Purpose: To understand the process of an international doctoral physical education teacher education instructor instituting change during one semester of teaching a university course in the United States. Method: Data included reflexive journal entries, recordings of peer debriefing meetings with a critical friend, informal WhatsApp messages, and anonymous feedback from students. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Results: The three main themes were (a) action research as a tool for change, (b) the challenges of the first year as a doctoral physical education teacher education instructor, and (c) the power of reflection. We discuss the main challenges the first author faced and the complexities of the process of developing her pedagogical philosophies in teaching higher education for the first time in a new culture. Conclusions: Action research served as a tool to overcome challenges, develop confidence, and autonomy. The support system provided by her advisors was the main asset for achieving pedagogical change.

Purpose: The broad aim of this paper is to use Noddings' theory of ethical care to analyse mentors' caring experiences. More specifically, it aims to analyse how physical education (PE) mentors provide care, how they are cared for and how this impacts their role within the context of secondary PE initial teacher training (ITT). Design/methodology/approach: Semi-structured interviews were used to generate data from 17 secondary PE mentors within the same university ITT partnership in the north-west of England. Questions focused on the mentors' experiences of care and the impact this had on their wellbeing and professional practice. A process of thematic analysis was used to identify, analyse and report patterns in the data. Findings: The participants reflected established definitions of mentoring by prioritising the aim of developing the associate teachers' (ATs) teaching rather than explicitly providing support for their wellbeing. This aim could be challenging for mentors who face personal and professional difficulties while supporting the training of an AT. Mentors frequently referred to the support of their departmental colleagues in overcoming these difficulties and the importance of developing interdependent caring relationships. Receiving care did not impede mentors from providing support for others; it heightened awareness and increased their desire to develop caring habits.
