This article proposes a novel application method, inverse application of artificial intelligence (IAAI) for the control of power electronic converter systems. The proposed method can give the desired control coefficients/references in a simple way because, compared to conventional methods, IAAI only relies on a data-driven process with no need for an optimization process or substantial derivations. Noting that the IAAI approach uses artificial intelligence to provide feasible coefficients/references for the power converter control, rather than building a new controller. After illustrating the IAAI concept, a conventional application method of artificial neural network is discussed, an optimization-based design. Then, a two-source-converter microgrid case is studied to choose the best droop coefficients via the optimization-based approach. After that, the proposed IAAI method is employed for the same microgrid case to quickly find good droop coefficients. Furthermore, the IAAI method is applied to a modular multilevel converter (MMC) case, extending the MMC operation region under unbalanced grid faults. Model predictive control (MPC) is a very attractive solution for controlling power electronic converters. The aim of this paper is to present and discuss the latest developments in MPC for power converters and drives, describing the current state of this control strategy and analyzing the new trends and challenges it presents when applied to power electronic systems. The paper revisits the operating principle of MPC and identifies three key elements in the MPC strategies, namely the prediction model, the cost function, and the optimization algorithm. In this paper, a model predictive control (MPC) based on optimal switching sequences (OSSs) for a single-phase grid-connected full-bridge neutral-point-clampled (NPC) power converter is presented. The predictive control algorithm is formulated in terms of OSSs, which was originally proposed to govern three-phase power converters. In this paper, the OSS concept is extended to control single-phase power converters. The proposed MPC algorithm belongs to the continuous control set MPC and is able to provide fixed switching frequency while handling system constraints. The proposed algorithm has been experimentally tested in an NPC power converter prototype. Experimental results show the desired fixed switching behavior in the steady-state condition and the intrinsic fast dynamic provided by MPC during transients. The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) poses a major challenge to the operation of the electricity grid owing to the intermittent nature of their power output. The ability of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) to provide grid support and smooth the output of RES in combination with their decrease in cost has fueled research interest in this technology over the last couple of years. Power electronics (PE) is the key enabling technology for connecting utility-scale BESS to the medium-voltage grid. PE ensure energy is delivered while complying with grid codes and dispatch orders. Simultaneously, the PE must regulate the operating point of the batteries, thus for instance preventing overcharge of batteries. This paper presents a comprehensive review of PE topologies for utility BESS that have been proposed either within industry or the academic literature. Grid-connected power converters play a key role in several applications such as the integration of renewable energy sources and motor drives. For this reason, the development of high performance control strategies for this particular class of power converters has increasingly attracted the interest of both academic and industry researchers. This paper presents the predictive optimal switching sequence (OSS) direct power control (DPC) (OSS-DPC) algorithm for grid-connected converters. The OSS-DPC method belongs to the predictive-DPC family and provides the desired power references by calculating globally OSSs. To address computational and implementation issues, an efficient control algorithm, named reduced OSS-DPC, is introduced. The implementation of the proposed control strategy in a standard DSP is evaluated on a two-level power converter prototype working as a STATCOM. Energy storage systems (ESSs) are enabling technologies for well-established and new applications such as power peak shaving, electric vehicles, integration of renewable energies, etc. This paper presents a review of ESSs for transport and grid applications, covering several aspects as the storage technology, the main applications, and the power converters used to operate some of the energy storage technologies. Special attention is given to the different applications, providing a deep description of the system and addressing the most suitable storage technology. Multilevel cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converters have been presented as a good solution for high-power applications. In this way, several control and modulation techniques have been proposed for this power converter topology. In this paper, the steady-state power balance in the cells of a single-phase two-cell CHB is studied. The capability to be supplied with active power from the grid or to deliver active power to the grid in each cell is analyzed according to the dc-link voltages and the desired ac output voltage value. The limits of the maximum and minimum input active powers for a stable operation of the CHB are addressed. Simulation results are shown to validate the presented analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, a multilevel cascaded converter fed with a single dc source has been presented. An analysis of the steady-state working limits of this type of converter is presented in this paper. Limits of the maximum output voltage and the minimum and maximum loading conditions for stable operation of the converter are addressed. In this paper, a way to achieve any dc voltage ratio (inside the stable operation area of the converter) between the H-bridges of the single-dc-source cascaded H-bridge converter is presented. The proposed dc-voltage-ratio control is based on a time-domain modulation strategy that avoids the use of inappropriate states to achieve the dc-voltage-ratio control. The proposed technique is a feedforward-modulation technique which takes into account the actual dc voltage of each H-bridge of the converter, leading to output waveforms with low distortion. In this way, the dc voltage of the floating H-bridge can be controlled while the output voltage has low distortion independently of the desired dc voltage ratio. Experimental results from a two-cell cascaded converter are presented in order to validate the proposed dc-voltage-ratio control strategy and the introduced concepts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
