In this paper, an approximate aggregated impedance model (AAIM) of a grid-connected wind farm with multiple wind turbine generators (WTGs) for the small-signal stability study is derived. The derivation is conducted under the condition that the WTGs inside the wind farm are of the same type and from the same manufacturer. The AAIM derived can be seen as the impedance model (IM) of a grid-connected aggregated WTG. The IM of the aggregated WTG is the weighted average of the IMs of the individual WTGs in the wind farm and hence is simple to be built. The reactance of the line connecting the aggregated WTG to the external AC grid is the maximum eigenvalue of the network reactance matrix of the grid-connected wind farm. In addition, the derivation justifies the representation of a wind farm by an aggregated WTG in the IM-based small-signal stability analysis. Finally, two example grid-connected wind farms are used to evaluate and demonstrate the effectiveness of the AAIM proposed in the small-signal stability analysis. Voltage and current waveforms contain the most authentic and granular information on the behaviors of power systems. In recent years, it has become possible to synchronize waveform data measured from different locations. Thus large-scale coordinated analyses of multiple waveforms over a wide area are within our reach. This development could unleash a set of new concepts, strategies, and tools for monitoring, protecting, and controlling power systems and apparatuses. This paper presents an in-depth review and analysis of the advancements in synchronized waveform data, including measurement devices, data characteristics, use cases, and comparisons with synchrophasor data. Based on the findings, five strategies are proposed to discover and develop synchronized waveform based applications over multiple application areas. The paper also presents three complementary measurement platforms and two data screening algorithms for application implementation. This paper analytically examines how the condition of weak grid connection affects the torsional sub-synchronous oscillations (SSOs) induced by a grid-connected DFIG in a power system. The examination focuses on the SSO mode of grid-connected DFIG, which is dominated by the phase locked loop (PLL) or DC voltage control. Theoretical analysis is carried out to prove that the condition of weak grid connection amplifies the impact of modal resonance between the DFIG and torsional dynamics of synchronous generators. The amplifying effect of weak grid connection exhibits as the decrease of damping of SSO mode of DFIG and increase of the associated residue when the grid connection weakens. Consequently, the DFIG is more likely to induce torsional SSOs under the condition of weak grid connection, leading to system instability in the worst case. Analytical examination presented in the paper reveals the mechanism about how the condition of weak grid connection plays a key role for the DFIG to induce the torsional SSOs. An example multi-machine power system with the grid-connected DFIG is presented. To accurately capture the dynamics of a large-scale ac/dc system as a whole and the interactions between its individual components, a simulation method with high precision and efficiency is in great demand. For this purpose, we develop a multi-domain co-simulation method, in which the target system is partitioned into multiple dc and ac subsystems, represented by our proposed shifted-frequency phasor (SFP) models and the traditional EMT models, respectively. SFP models can be simulated with a much larger time step, leading to a significant improvement in simulation efficiency under a given requirement of precision. Further, a new interface model, namely, hybrid multi-domain transmission-line model (HMD-TLM), is developed to reflect the interactions between SFP models and EMT models, with the additional benefit of producing instantaneous and phasor waveforms simultaneously. Thus, the multi-domain co-simulation is implemented based on the efficient SFP models, the HMD-TLM, and a designed time sequences of simulation. The performance (efficiency and accuracy) of the proposed method has been validated on the well-known CIGRE ac/dc system as well as a practical system integrating large ac grids and modular-multilevel-converter-based multi-terminal dc grids. Recently, emerging oscillation issues have been caused by subsynchronous interaction (SSI) between voltage source converters (VSCs) based renewable generators and ac/dc grids. To investigate the dynamics of SSI, several impedance models (IMs) of VSC have been developed in previous studies. They are established in different reference frames and consider the entire or just parts of the control systems. However, it is still an unanswered question whether or not the existing IMs are suitable for SSI analysis and to what extent the IMs with different modeling details affect subsynchronous dynamics. To fill in this gap, this paper, first, reviews the existing IMs of VSC and clarifies their relationship. Then, their frequency characteristics are examined so as to select the proper models for the studies of sub-/supersynchronous and high-frequency dynamics. Next, both zero-pole and IM-based SSI analyses are carried out on a simplified system and a real-world wind-farm system that suffered actual SSI incidents. The results indicate that the outer-loop control has a significant impact on the subsynchronous dynamics, and only those IMs taking full-scale controls and frequency-coupling effects into account can reflect SSI accurately. Electromagnetic transient (EMT) and transient stability hybrid simulations are predominantly used to analyze the interactions between HVDC systems and the ac grids. However, the dynamics of the converters will be greatly affected by the waveforms of adjacent ac systems. Waveform distortion as well as time delay caused by interfacing can significantly increase interface errors, resulting in the decrease of the overall accuracy of the simulations. To solve such problems, a dynamic phasor based interface model (DPIM) is proposed in this paper to improve the accuracy of interfaces, especially when the fault occurs near the converters. In doing so, the whole system is partitioned into three parts: the transient stability (TS) subsystem, the EMT subsystem, and the DPIM. During each iteration, the interfaces between the TS subsystem and DPIM are represented by their Norton equivalents at the fundamental frequency and Thevenin equivalents in the dynamic phasor form. Similarly, the interfaces between DPIM and EMT subsystems are represented by their three-phase Norton equivalents and Thevenin equivalents in dynamic phasors, respectively. When investigating voltage and current stresses in critical main circuit components during faults of the converter, a detailed equivalent model capable of representing the balancing control strategies of the capacitor voltages on the submodule level, along with blocking and delocking, is always necessary. Among previously proposed equivalent models of the modular multilevel converter (MMC), only submodule averaged models (SAMs) can capture interested inner dynamics inside each arm. However, the simulation accuracy of SAMs is not always satisfactory, especially when the time step is larger than 10 $\mu$s. In order to further improve the simulation accuracy with guaranteed simulation efficiency, the shifted frequency modeling of the half- and full-bridge hybrid MMC is proposed in this paper. Therein, each submodule is represented by Thévenin equivalents derived by submodule dynamic phasors. The arm of the MMC is represented by Norton equivalents to guarantee the efficiency, considering both normal and dc-blocking conditions. This paper proposes a novel multirate co-simulation method to improve simulation efficiency of large-scale AC plus multiterminal DC (MTDC) grids. In this method, the whole system is partitioned into different AC and MTDC subsystems. They each are simulated with different time steps according to their requirements of accuracy. Unlike the existing methods where simplified models are adopted, the proposed approach fully reserves both the detailed behavior of converters and the nonlinear dynamics of large-scale AC systems. To realize the coordination between different subsystems, updating and discretization of the interface models are significant to guarantee the overall numerical accuracy and stability of the co-simulation method. Accordingly, the interface models of the partitioned AC and DC networks are represented by time-varying Thevenin and Norton equivalents. To eliminate the aliasing or time-delay errors, their parameters are derived using moving-window prediction, stepwise correction, and averaging techniques. A numerical oscillation suppression algorithm is developed for the discretization of the interface model. Thus, numerical stability is well guaranteed. The variables inside each subsystem as well as the interfaces, which are derived by augmented network equations (ANEs), are calculated simultaneously. The rate ratio of large AC and MTDC systems is determined based on our proposed criterion of electromagnetic transient simulation accuracy. The dynamics of load, especially induction motors, are the driving force for short-term voltage stability (STVS) problems. In this paper, the equivalent rotation speed of motors is identified online and its recovery time is estimated next to realize an emergency-demand-response (EDR) based under speed load shedding (USLS) scheme to improve STVS. The proposed scheme consists of an EDR program and two regular stages (RSs). In the EDR program, contracted load is used as a fast-response resource rather than the last defense. The estimated recovery time (ERT) is used as the triggering signal for the EDR program. In the RSs, the amount of load to be shed at each bus is determined according to the assigned weights based on ERTs. Case studies on a practical power system in China Southern Power Grid have validated the performance of the proposed USLS scheme under various contingency scenarios. The utilization of EDR resources and the adaptive distribution of shedding amount in RSs guarantee faster voltage recovery. To make better use of local generators' dynamic var reserve to improve short-term voltage stability (STVS), this paper proposes an integrated high side var-voltage control (IHSV^2C) for power plants in receiving-end power systems. The IHSV^2C consists of a plant-level multi-machine var coordinator (MMVC) and several unit-level high side voltage controllers (HSVCs). MMVC coordinates the reactive power output among generators and provides control parameters for HSVCs, while HSVCs can maintain the voltage of a pre-defined voltage control point (VCP) by regulating the voltage reference of the excitation control of each generator. Therefore, when the system suffers a serious fault, IHSV^2C can drive the generators to provide stronger var support. Consequently, the voltage stability can be improved. A conceptual model of the receiving-end power system in China Southern Power Grid (CSG) is established, and the IHSV^2C has been validated through a simulation analysis on the system. Both time-domain simulation results and the voltage sag severity index (VSSI) have fully demonstrated its performance.
