Hydropower plays an essential role in Europe's energy transition and can serve as an important factor in the stability of the electricity system. This is even more crucial in areas that rely strongly on renewable energy production, for instance, solar and wind power, as for example the Peloponnese and the Ionian islands in Greece. To safeguard hydropower's contribution to total energy production, an accurate prediction of the annual precipitation is required. Valuable tools to obtain accurate predictions of future observations are firstly a series of sophisticated data preprocessing techniques and secondly the use of advanced machine learning algorithms. In the present paper, a complete procedure is proposed to obtain accurate predictions of meteorological data, such as precipitation. This procedure is applied to the Greek automated weather stations network, operated by the National Observatory of Athens, in the Peloponnese and the Ionian islands in Greece. The proposed prediction algorithm successfully identified the climatic zones based on their different geographic and climatic characteristics for most meteorological stations, resulting in realistic precipitation predictions. This paper is dealing with the assessment of climate change scenarios on selected meteorological variables at the Lake Karla watershed, central Greece and it is a contribution to the "HYDROMENTOR" research project. A statistical downscaling method has been employed to estimate monthly precipitation and temperature time series for future climate periods. The outputs of the Canadian Centre for Climate Modeling Analysis Global Circulation Model CGCM3 were applied for three socioeconomic scenarios, namely SRES B 1, SRES A 1B and SRES A2 for the assessment of climate change impact on precipitation and temperature. The methodology has been developed for the historical period 1980-2000 and applied for two future periods 2030-2050 and 2080-2100. Historical and future periods were compared for monthly and annual basis using various statistical criteria such as the mean and standard deviation. Results showed that climate change will have minor impacts on precipitation and even smaller impacts on temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The underwater gamma-ray spectrometer GeoMAREA was utilized for in situ continuous monitoring of radon progenies in the atmosphere near the city of Anavyssos, Attica, Greece, during the period from 1 November 2017 until 1 April 2018. The acquired spectra before and during rainfalls were used to derive rainwater's spectra revealing that the major contributors to the observed photo-peaks are the progenies of 222Rn (214Pb, 214Bi). The total counting rate of the spectra and the counting rate of the net areas of 352 keV and 609 keV photo-peaks (214Pb and 214Bi, respectively) proved to be effective parameters for rainfall identification and investigation. Statistical analysis did not reveal a significant association between radon progenies and temperature, pressure, humidity and dew point during rainfalls or dry meteorological conditions. However, preferable wind directions for rainwater rich in radon progenies revealed the impact of the atmospheric masses trajectories before a precipitation event. According to HYSPLIT modelling of selected rainfall events, air masses that pass over terrestrial areas at low altitudes (< 1500 m above ground level) 48 h before the event result in rainwater enriched in radon progenies. On contrary, air masses that pass before an event over terrestrial areas at higher altitudes (> 3000 m above ground level) result in rainwater of low radon progenies concentration. Overall, the method was considered promising for continuous in situ measurements of radon progenies in the atmosphere and may extend the use of radon as a tracer for studies related to climate investigation. The evaluation of weather forecast accuracy is of major interest in decision making in almost every sector of the economy and in civil protection. To this, a detailed assessment of Bologna Limited-Area Model (BOLAM) seven days fine grid 3 h predictions is made for precipitation, air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed over a large lowland agricultural area of a Mediterranean-type climate, characterized by hot summers and rainy moderate winters (plain of Arta, NW Greece). Timeseries that cover a four-year period (2016–2019) from seven agro-meteorological stations located at the study area are used to run a range of contingency and accuracy measures as well as Taylor diagrams, and the results are thoroughly discussed. The overall results showed that the model failed to comply with the precipitation regime throughout the study area, while the results were mediocre for wind speed. Considering relative humidity, the results revealed acceptable performance and good correlation between the model output and the observed values, for the early days of forecast. Only in air temperature, the forecasts exhibited very good performance. Discussion is made on the ability of the model to predict major rainfall events and to estimate water budget components as rainfall and reference evapotranspiration. The need for skilled weather forecasts from improved versions of the examined model that may incorporate post-processing techniques to improve predictions or from other forecasting services is underlined. The present study investigated future temperature and precipitation changes over Greece using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. WRF was driven by EC-EARTH over Greece at very high resolution for the historical period (1980–2004), along with projected simulations, in the near future (2025–2049) and far future (2075–2099) under the Representative Concentration Pathways 4.5 (RCP4.5) and 8.5 (RCP8.5). Climatic variables were produced at 5-km grid spacing and 6-h interval. The historical simulation was evaluated against the available station observations. The analysis showed that the model underestimated the maximum temperatures and slightly overestimated the minimum temperatures. Also, the model simulated a small dry bias in precipitation with an excellent representation of the spatial patterns. The model projections for temperature under the two emission scenarios compared to the historical simulation revealed a robust magnitude of future warming with the most pronounced changes predominantly over the eastern areas of the country under the RCP8.5 in the far future. Projected precipitation changes were more evident in the far future with an overall decrease of the annual precipitation all over the eastern part of the country (with islands included) with the most dramatic reductions (above 40%) of seasonal precipitation observed under RCP8.5. Increases in the number of hot days were found everywhere with more pronounced changes over the plain areas under RCP8.5 in the far future. The assessment of future precipitation variations prevailing in an area is essential for the research regarding climate and climate change. The current paper focuses on 3 selected areas in Greece that present different climatic characteristics due to their location and aims to assess and compare the future variation of annual and seasonal precipitation. Future precipitation data from the ENSEMBLES anthropogenic climate-change (ACC) global simulations and the Climate version of the Local Model (CLM) were obtained and analyzed. The climate simulations were performed for the future periods 2021–2050 and 2071–2100 under the A1B and B1 scenarios. Mann–Kendall test was applied to investigate possible trends. Spatial distribution of precipitation was performed using a combination of dynamic and statistical downscaling techniques and Kriging method within ArcGIS 10.2.1. The results indicated that for both scenarios, reference periods and study areas, precipitation is expected to be critically decreased. Additionally, Mann–Kendall test application showed a strong downward trend for every study area. Furthermore, the decrease in precipitation for the Ardas River basin characterized by the continental climate will be tempered, while in the Sperchios River basin it will be smoother due to the influence of some minor climatic variations in the basins' springs in the highlands where milder conditions occur. Precipitation decrease in the Geropotamos River basin which is characterized by Mediterranean climate will be more vigorous. B1 scenario appeared more optimistic for the Ardas and Sperchios River basins, while in the Geropotamos River basin, both applied scenarios brought similar results, in terms of future precipitation response. In this paper, we study δ15N enrichment as an indicator not only of marine protein diet, but also of climate change. The slope of the variation of δ15N with precipitation was calculated equal to 0.38/100 mm of precipitation for Greek plants, 0.38/100 mm of precipitation for herbivores, and 0.32/100 mm of precipitation for the Greek human population (hair samples). As a case study, the slope was used to re-evaluate the published mean δ15N human bone collagen values from the Early Neolithic to Late Bronze Age for 22 archaeological sites. The results indicate that climate has a significant impact on the final δ15N values of plant and animal tissues. Furthermore, for the same sites, we investigated the intra-site diet patterns, while taking into account the environmental effect on the observed δ15N human bone collagen values. Abstract: This paper reviews all available stable isotopic data concerning precipitation and spring water in Greece, from the 1960s until today. Spatial variability is investigated in order to provide basic information and identify the locally significant parameters that affect isotopic distributions. The area of interest was partitioned into eight sections according to geographical location and climatic characteristics. The distance of the station from the sea and the altitude are the main factors imprinted in the isotopic signature of precipitation. Local meteoric water meteoric line (LMWL) for precipitation and spring water were calculated for each section and for Greece as a whole. Precipitation LMWLs differ from the Global Meteoric Water Line (GMWL) in various ways across Greece. Elevated deuterium excess values are observed, probably due to water vapour originating from the Aegean or the Mid-eastern Mediterranean. Spring LMWLs are more or less consistent throughout the country. Furthermore, a high resolution map of precipitation and freshwater spring (Cl− <200ppm and T <25°C) δ 18O reveals several interesting features such as an orographic shadow effect induced by the Pindos Mountains, a strong climatic signal in southern Greece and a local city-microclimate effect around Athens. Summary: The contribution of stable isotopes in meteorological, climatological and hydrological research is well known. Until this date and despite the fact that several hydrological studies of water sources in Greece have been published, no systematic isotopic study of precipitation has been performed in the country. This paper presents all the available isotopic data collected since 1960 in several Hellenic measurement stations. This data is divided in two periods: the first covers data that was collected in the past, in the frame of a preliminary survey of the isotope composition of precipitation in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and specific hydrological studies; the second is the result of a three-year coordinated research project of the International Atomic Energy Agency, in which the authors participated, aiming at the systematic study of stable isotopes (2H and 18O) and 3H in precipitation around the Mediterranean basin. No statistically significant behavior between the two periods of data was found. The isotopic content of precipitation presents characteristics intermediate of those of the Eastern and Western Mediterranean. The tritium concentration in precipitation declines as expected towards the pre-bomb levels, however there is an indication that tritium concentrations are higher in Northern Greece. This study presents the results of high-resolution dynamical downscaling of 5 km on maximum (TX) and minimum (TN) air temperature and precipitation, for Greece, with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The ERA-Interim (ERA-I) reanalysis dataset is used for initial and boundary conditions. The model results (WRF_5) are evaluated against available ground observations for the period 1980–2004 through the calculation of mean climatology, statistical metrics, and distributions of extreme events on daily, monthly and seasonal scales. WRF_5 model captures very well the geographical distribution of TX and TN of the study area, and illustrates finely the seasonal differences. Statistical results for TX (TN) indicate a cold (warm) bias of − 0.6 °C (1 °C) regarding WRF_5 and − 3 °C (0.5 °C) for ERA-I. The efficiency metrics for temperatures showed a highly improved performance of the model compared to reanalysis for all temporal scales investigated. The observed mean annual cycle and inter-annual variability of precipitation are also well represented by model simulation. Although WRF_5 overestimates rainfall during most of the year, the seasonal pattern of WRF_5 presented similar correlation coefficients for all stations with a range of 0.6–0.85, showing a good model ability to simulate the precipitation in Greece. The results reveal the capability of the configured WRF high resolution model to reproduce the main climatological variables of the study area, outperforming the coarse resolution ERA-Interim in a region that is dominated by highly variable topographic characteristics. Gridded climate datasets are among the most used datasets in the study of weather and climate. Given the large range of such products currently available, investigators must consider their strengths and weaknesses. This research evaluated the comparative performance of two reanalysis datasets (ERA‐Interim, and Agri4Cast [e.g. MARS‐STAT]) and one reprocessing dataset (E‐OBS) in replicating selected spatiotemporal characteristics of precipitation and drought at 20 wine production regions in Greece during 1981–2012. The results highlighted the abilities of E‐OBS and Agri4Cast, whose performance varied with season and the specific rainfall characteristic in question. The former product: (1) reproduced better the annual decreasing trends in spring, summer, and autumn, (2) captured a larger portion of the observed monthly variability in spring and summer, associated better and showed the lowest errors with observations, and (3) computed better or equal to Agri4Cast different skill scores applied on the daily time series, replicated better the probabilities of wet and dry days and equally well with Agri4Cast the extreme precipitation indices. Agri4Cast replicated better the monthly cycle of precipitation (underestimating though the station averages) and the increasing trend from SE to NW, on spatial basis. With regards to drought monitoring, frequency and detection of very and extremely wet and dry spells, SPI was superior to SC‐PDSI (the self‐calibrated version of Palmer's index), particularly when E‐OBS data was used. We present evidence of a recent drying in the eastern Mediterranean, based on weather and tree-ring data for Samos, an island of the eastern Aegean Sea. Rainfall declined rapidly after the late 1970s following trends for the entire Mediterranean and was associated with reduced tree-ring width in Pinus brutia. The most recent decline led to the lowest annual radial stem increment after the last 100 years (as far as records reach). As moisture availability decreased best correlations of tree growth with rainfall were obtained for progressively longer integration periods (1–2 years in moister periods, 5–6 years during the severe dryness of 20th century's last decades), suggesting increasing dependency in deep soil water. Such long-term integration periods of tree-growth responses to precipitation have not been reported before. They may reflect a tree-rooting pattern adapted to cope with even several successive dry years. In late summer 2000, moisture reserves became exhausted, however, and a substantial fraction of low altitude pines died, including some 80-year-old trees, which underlines the exceptional extent this trend had reached. Our findings provide empirical support for Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change projections derived from global circulation models that the Mediterranean, its eastern basin in particular, should become drier as temperature rises, as was the case in the recent past. Acid mine drainage (AMD), red mud (RM) and coal fly ash (CFA) are potential high environmental pollution problems due to their acidity, toxic metals and sulphate contents. Treatment of acidic mine water requires the generation of enough alkalinity to neutralize the excess acidity. Therefore, red mud types from Germany and Greece were chosen for the neutralization of AMD from South Africa, where this problem is notorious. Because of the high alkalinity, German red mud is the most promising precipitation agent achieving the highest pH-values. CFA is less efficient for a neutralization and precipitation process. An increase in temperature increases the adsorption kinetics. The maximum pH-value of 6.0 can be reached by the addition of 100 g German red mud at 20 °C to AMD-water with an initial pH value of 1.9. German red mud removes 99% of the aluminium as aluminium hydroxide at pH 5.0. The rare earth elements (yttrium and cerium) are adsorbed by Greek red mud with an efficiency of 50% and 80% at 60 °C in 5 min, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Iron control in the atmospheric acid leaching (AL) of nickel laterite was evaluated in this study. The aim was to decrease acid consumption and iron dissolution by iron precipitation during nickel leaching. The combined acid leaching and iron precipitation process involves direct acid leaching of the limonite type of laterite followed by a simultaneous iron precipitation and nickel leaching step. Iron precipitation as jarosite is carried out by using nickel containing silicate laterite for neutralization. Acid is generated in the jarosite precipitation reaction, and it dissolves nickel and other metals like magnesium from the silicate laterite. Leaching tests were carried out using three laterite samples from the Agios Ioannis, Evia Island, and Kastoria mines in Greece. Relatively low acid consumption was achieved during the combined precipitation and acid leaching tests. The acid consumption was approximately 0.4 kg acid per kg laterite, whereas the acid consumption in direct acid leaching of the same laterite samples was approximately 0.6–0.8 kg acid per kg laterite. Iron dissolution was only 1.5–3% during the combined precipitation and acid leaching tests, whereas in direct acid leaching it was 15–30% with the Agios Ioannis and Evia Island samples and 80% with the Kastoria sample. The aim of the present study is to assess the future spatial and temporal distribution of precipitation and temperature, and relate the corresponding change to water resources’ quantitative status in Pinios River Basin (PRB), Thessaly, Greece. For this purpose, data from four Regional Climate Models (RCMs) for the periods 2021-2100 driven by several General Circulation Models (GCMs) were collected and bias-correction was performed based on linear scaling method. The bias-correction was made based on monthly precipitation and temperature data collected for the period 1981-2000 from 57 meteorological stations in total. The results indicate a general trend according to which precipitation is decreasing whilst temperature is increasing to an extent that varies depending on each particular RCM-GCM output. On the average, annual precipitation change for the period 2021-2100 was about − 80 mm, ranging between − 149 and + 35 mm, while the corresponding change for temperature was 2.81 °C, ranging between 1.48 and 3.72 °C. The investigation of potential impacts to the water resources demonstrates that water availability is expected to be significantly decreased in the already water-stressed PRB. The water stresses identified are related to the potential decreasing trend in groundwater recharge and the increasing trend in irrigation demand, which constitutes the major water consumer in PRB.
