The Brazilian Amazon provides important hydrological cycle functions, including precipitation regimes that bring water to the people and environment and are critical to moisture recycling and transport, and represents an important variable for climate models to simulate accurately. This paper evaluates the performance of 13 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models. This is done by discussing results from spatial pattern mapping, Taylor diagram analysis and Taylor skill score, annual climatology comparison, cumulative distribution analysis, and empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. Precipitation analysis shows: (1) This region displays higher rainfall in the north-northwest and drier conditions in the south. Models tend to underestimate northern values or overestimate the central to northwest averages. (2) The southern Amazon has a more defined dry season (June, July, and August) and wet season (December, January, and February) and models simulate this well. The northern Amazon dry season tends to occur in August, September, and October and the wet season occurs in March, April, and May, and models are not able to capture the climatology as well. Models tend to produce too much rainfall at the start of the wet season and tend to either over- or under-estimate the dry season, although ensemble means typically display the overall pattern more precisely. (3) Models struggle to capture extreme values of precipitation except when precipitation values are close to 0. (4) EOF analysis shows that models capture the dominant mode of variability, which was the annual cycle or South American Monsoon System. (5) When all evaluation metrics are considered, the models that perform best are CESM2, MIROC6, MRIESM20, SAM0UNICON, and the ensemble mean. This paper supports research in determining the most up-to-date CMIP6 model performance of precipitation regime for 1981–2014 for the Brazilian Amazon. Results will aid in understanding future projections of precipitation for the selected subset of global climate models and allow scientists to construct reliable model ensembles, as precipitation plays a role in many sectors of the economy, including the ecosystem, agriculture, energy, and water security. The Andes Cordillera plays a role in driving moisture and heat from tropical onto subtropical South America. It forces the development of a lee-side trough that covers most of western Argentina and a low-level jet that maximizes over Paraguay, eastern Bolivia and northern Argentina and is tightly linked to precipitation variability over much of central and southeastern South America. Its steep slopes and the large zonal gradients in topography between the Equator and 40°S are misrepresented in climate simulations using Global Climate Models (GCM) with resolutions coarser than about 100 km, since they naturally have a poor representation of the Andes and related circulation features. This paper analyses the impact of varying artificially the altitude of the Andes Cordillera in a GCM as well as increasing the horizontal resolution to study how these variations determine moisture fluxes and precipitation over selected regions of South America. Results show that the height of the Andes is crucial in shaping moisture fluxes pathways onto subtropical South America all year long. In particular, the low-level jet is only simulated when the Andes heights are doubled. At the same time, the relationship between the Andes shape and the location of the Bolivian High in summer is also discussed. In terms of precipitation, the lowest bias in the simulations is achieved when the horizontal resolution is increased, while in particular near the Andes foothills the simulated annual rainfall is largely determined by the Mountains shape. On a hemispheric scale, it is now well established that stratospheric ozone depletion has been the principal driver of externally forced atmospheric circulation changes south of the Equator in the last decades of the 20th Century. The impact of ozone depletion has been felt over the entire hemisphere, as reflected in the poleward drift of the midlatitude jet, the southward expansion of the summertime Hadley cell and accompanying precipitation trends deep into the subtropics. On a regional scale, however, surface impacts directly attributable to ozone depletion have yet to be identified. In this paper we focus on South Eastern South America (SESA), a region that has exhibited one of the largest wetting trends during the 20th Century. We study the impact of ozone depletion on SESA precipitation using output from 6 different climate models, spanning a wide range of complexity. In all cases we contrast pairs of model integrations with and without ozone depletion, but with all other forcings identically specified. This allows for unambiguous attribution of the computed precipitation trends. All 6 climate models consistently reveal that stratospheric ozone depletion results in a significant wetting of SESA over the period 1960-1999. Taken as a whole, these model results strongly suggest that the impact of ozone depletion on SESA precipitation has been as large as, and quite possibly larger than, the one caused by increasing greenhouse gases over the same period. • Due to skilful forcing, hindcasts of runoff and discharge have much skill in north and in southeast South America. • Due to initial conditions, hydrological hindcasts have much skill in the drier regions of the continent. • Spatial patterns of theoretical (compared to reference simulation) and actual skill (compared to observed discharge) are similar. The first aim of the present paper is the determination of the magnitude, annual variation and spatial distribution of skill in seasonal hindcasts of runoff and discharge in the entire continent of South America. We evaluated 35 years of hindcasts generated with the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) hydrological model forced with SEAS5 hindcasts. Initial conditions of terrestrial water and so-called pseudo-observations were computed with a reference (i.e. historic) simulation. Skill was determined with monthly temporal resolution for the entire annual cycle and mostly using the pseudo-observations for verification. The second aim of the paper is the explanation of skill in terms of its sources, namely meteorological forcing and the initial conditions. Therefore, two sets of restricted hindcasts, which isolate the sources of skill, were analysed. The SEAS5 precipitation hindcasts exhibit significant skill even at the longest lead times (7 months). Beyond the first lead month we found significant skill in 13–43 % of the grid cells, depending on target and lead month. Levels of skill are higher in the full hindcasts (significant skill in 31–89 % of the grid cells). At the continental scale more of the skill is caused by the forcing than by the initial conditions. The runoff hindcasts are skilful in large parts of the continent. In a 1000 km wide band along the north coast of the continent and in southeast South America, most of the skill is due to the forcing. A typical feature of these regions is an increase of skill with lead time during specific parts of the year, which is against the common tendency. In Argentina and north Chile most of the skill in the runoff hindcasts can be attributed to the initial conditions of soil moisture. Interannual variability is an important modulator of synoptic and intraseasonal variability in South America. This paper seeks to characterize the main modes of interannual variability of seasonal precipitation and some associated mechanisms. The impact of this variability on the frequency of extreme rainfall events and the possible effect of anthropogenic climate change on this variability are reviewed. The interannual oscillations of the annual total precipitation are mainly due to the variability in austral autumn and summer. While autumn is the dominant rainy season in the northern part of the continent, where the variability is highest (especially in the northeastern part), summer is the rainy season over most of the continent, thanks to a summer monsoon regime. In the monsoon season, the strongest variability occurs near the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ), which is one of the most important features of the South American monsoon system. In all seasons but summer, the most important source of variability is ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation), although ENSO shows a great contribution also in summer. The ENSO impact on the frequency of extreme precipitation events is also important in all seasons, being generally even more significant than the influence on seasonal rainfall totals. Climate change associated with increasing emission of greenhouse gases shows potential to impact seasonal amounts of precipitation in South America, but there is still great uncertainty associated with the projected changes, since there is not much agreement among the models' outputs for most regions in the continent, with the exception of southeastern South America and southern Andes. Current climate models project that Antarctic sea ice will decrease by the end of the twenty-first century. Previous studies have suggested that Antarctic sea ice changes have impacts on atmospheric circulation and the mean state of the Southern Hemisphere. However, little is known about whether Antarctic sea ice loss may have a tangible impact on climate extremes over the southern continents and whether ocean–atmosphere coupling plays an important role in changes of climate extremes over the southern continents. In this study, we conduct a set of fully coupled and atmosphere-only model experiments forced by present and future Antarctic sea ice cover. It is found that the projected Antarctic sea ice loss by the end of the twenty-first century leads to an increase in the frequency and duration of warm extremes (especially warm nights) over the southern continents and a decrease in cold extremes over most regions. The frequency and duration of wet extremes are projected to increase over South America and Antarctica, whereas changes in dry days and the longest dry spell vary with regions. Further Antarctic sea ice loss under a quadrupling of CO2 leads to similar but larger changes. Comparison between the coupled and atmosphere-only model experiments suggests that ocean dynamics and their interactions with the atmosphere induced by Antarctic sea ice loss play a key role in driving the identified changes in temperature and precipitation extremes over southern continents. By comparing with global warming experiments, we find that Antarctic sea ice loss may affect temperature and precipitation extremes for some regions under greenhouse warming, especially Antarctica. Southeastern South America (SESA)'s precipitation is thought to be influenced by both El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Antarctic Oscillation (AAO), especially in austral spring. Previous studies conclude AAO can modulate ENSO's impact on precipitation over the SESA region without differentiating between El Niño and La Niña events. In the present study, we use composite analysis to further explore the combined impact of AAO and ENSO on austral spring precipitation over Southeastern South America (SESA) to answer this question and explain the dynamic mechanisms. We found that different AAO phases can influence La Niña's impact on SESA austral spring precipitation considerably, while this does not apply for El Niño events. From our analysis, we found that AAO exerts more impact on austral spring precipitation over SESA compared to ENSO during La Niña years by influencing northerly wind and southward water vapor flux, which contributes most of the moisture into the SESA region, due to the strengthening of South Atlantic subtropical anticyclone and stronger meridional gradient in low-level pressure. Besides, there is an upper-level trough (ridge) over subtropical South America indicating advection of cyclonic (anticyclonic) vorticity inducing anomalous increase (decrease) of precipitation over that region during La Niña/AAO− (La Niña/AAO+). Planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes parameterize unresolved turbulent mixing within the PBL and free troposphere (FT). Previous studies reported that precipitation simulation over the Amazon in South America is quite sensitive to PBL schemes and the exact relationship between the turbulent mixing and precipitation processes is, however, not disentangled. In this study, regional climate simulations over the Amazon in January–February 2019 are examined at process level to understand the precipitation sensitivity to PBL scheme. The focus is on two PBL schemes, the Yonsei University (YSU) scheme, and the asymmetric convective model v2 (ACM2) scheme, which show the largest difference in the simulated precipitation. During daytime, while the FT clouds simulated by YSU dissipate, clouds simulated by ACM2 maintain because of enhanced moisture supply due to the enhanced vertical moisture relay transport process: (a) vertical mixing within PBL transports surface moisture to the PBL top, and (b) FT mixing feeds the moisture into the FT cloud deck. Due to the thick cloud deck over Amazon simulated by ACM2, surface radiative heating is reduced and consequently the convective available potential energy is reduced. As a result, precipitation is weaker from ACM2. Two key parameters dictating the vertical mixing are identified, p, an exponent determining boundary layer mixing and λ, a scale dictating FT mixing. Sensitivity simulations with altered p, λ, and other treatments within YSU and ACM2 confirm the precipitation sensitivity. The FT mixing in the presence of clouds appears most critical to explain the sensitivity between YSU and ACM2. Plain Language Summary: Predictions of weather and climate in terms of clouds and precipitation over the Amazon in South America are quite uncertain. This uncertainty has been largely attributed to errors in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) scheme, which represents turbulent mixing. A lack of understanding of the relationship between turbulence, clouds, and precipitation processes prevents us from improving PBL representation in models to achieve better weather and climate simulations. This study disentangles the turbulence/clouds/precipitation relationship, and identifies the root cause of model errors in PBL schemes using regional climate simulations over the Amazon. Two PBL schemes, the Yonsei University (YSU) scheme, and the asymmetric convective model v2 (ACM2) scheme, are examined, which show the largest difference in the simulated precipitation. The main difference between the two PBL schemes is the dissipation (YSU) or maintenance (ACM2) of clouds during daytime above the boundary layer, which modulates surface heating and consequently precipitation. The maintenance of a thick cloud deck over the Amazon in ACM2, is caused by enhanced vertical transport of moisture from the surface to above the boundary layer. Such an improved understanding of the turbulence/clouds/precipitation relationship allow us to propose potential solutions to improve PBL schemes in weather and climate models. This study examines the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) modulation of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnections in its decaying stages with the tropical ocean by focusing on the Indian Ocean Basin‐Wide (IOBW) mode and the precipitation over South America (SA) in the 1901–2012 period. Composite analyses revealed that the ENSO teleconnections are IPO‐modulated due to the differential ENSO decaying speed, which is slower during the positive than negative IPO phase, for both El Niño (EN) and La Niña (LN) cases. Negative precipitation anomalies related to EN persist over northeastern SA until austral winter for the positive IPO phase (POS IPO), while significant opposite sign anomalies occur in this region for the negative IPO phase (NEG IPO). These results are associated with the Walker circulation's reversal during NEG IPO which is, in turn, accompanied by negative IOBW. During the POS IPO, the positive IOBW causes upward movements over there and, by continuity, downward movements over SA. In the NEG IPO, for LN events the wave train originating in the north of Australia propagates toward subtropical SA, which, coupled with the surface circulation, causes dryness in this region. In addition, the rapid decay of LN in the NEG IPO, followed by the emergence of EN, caused changes in the Walker circulation, such that enhanced upward movements occurred over the Pacific and SA region, and downward movements over the Indian Ocean until austral winter. In turn, the slower decay of the LN in the POS IPO maintains strong subsidence over the central Pacific and weak upward motions over western SA. So, the EN (LN) and positive (negative) IOBW during the POS (NEG) IPO prolong the scarcity of precipitation over equatorial (subtropical) SA. Understanding the exchange of energy between the surface and the atmosphere is important in view of the climate scenario. However, it becomes a challenging task due to a sparse network of observations. This study aims to improve the energy balance estimates for the Amazon, Cerrado, and Pampa biomes located in South America using the radiation and precipitation forcing obtained from the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) and the precipitation CPTEC/MERGE datasets. We employed three surface models—Noah-MP, Community Land Model (CLSM), and Integrated Biosphere Simulator (IBIS)—and conducted modeling experiments, termed South America Land Data Assimilation System (SALDAS-2). The results showed that SALDAS-2 radiation estimates had the smallest errors. Moreover, SALDAS-2 precipitation estimates were better than the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) in the Cerrado (MBE = −0.16) and Pampa (MBE = −0.19). Noah-MP presented improvements compared with CLSM and IBIS in 100% of towers located in the Amazon. CLSM tends to overestimate the latent heat flux and underestimate the sensible heat flux in the Amazon. Noah-MP and Ensemble outperformed GLDAS in terms latent and sensible heat fluxes. The global impacts of El Niño on precipitation have been long‐recognized, but more understanding of the mechanisms behind this influence is needed. For instance, previous studies have largely overlooked the potential impacts of El Niño on terrestrial moisture recycling (TMR). We perform a 40‐year forward tracking simulation to derive a global climatology of recycled precipitation and use a composite analysis to investigate how El Niño affects TMR. We identify seven regions where the El Niño impact on TMR is most significant and find that, in these regions, changes in precipitation and TMR are directly related: they increase or decrease together. In addition, we find a marked latitudinal contrast between the Southern Hemisphere, where TMR increases during El Niño, and the Northern Hemisphere and the tropics, where it decreases. Our results indicate that the weakening and strengthening of TMR can be behind precipitation changes caused by El Niño globally. Plain Language Summary: El Niño is recognized as a climate variability phenomenon with significant impacts on precipitation worldwide. However, the mechanisms behind these impacts are not fully understood. Here we use model simulations to argue that one of those mechanisms is the effect of El Niño on terrestrial moisture recycling (TMR), that is, the fraction of precipitation fed by atmospheric moisture originating not in the ocean but on the continents. We show that El Niño significantly affects TMR globally, especially in seven regions of South America, Africa, North America, Europe, and Asia. In these regions, precipitation and TMR increase or decrease together. We find a contrast between the South and North of the planet: during El Niño, TMR increases in the Southern Hemisphere while decreasing in the Northern Hemisphere and the tropics. Overall, our results indicate that TMR weakening or strengthening are previously overlooked mechanisms behind precipitation changes caused by El Niño globally. The effect of multiyear La Niña (LN) events on precipitation in South America (SA) was assessed considering 10 persistent LN events over two successive years, referred to as Y1 and Y2 for the 1901–2012 period. Y1 spans from the austral winter of the first year to autumn of the second year, and Y2 spans from the austral winter of the second year to autumn of the third year. Comparisons were performed season by season of the Y1 and Y2. Composites revealed that the teleconnections related to a multiyear LN event during its Y1 and Y2 years, responsible for distinct seasonal precipitation anomaly patterns in SA, were associated with different tropical ocean conditions. In spring, the negative sea surface temperature (SST) dipole in the Indian Ocean during the Y2 was not observed during Y1. Different LN‐related SST anomaly patterns in the tropical Atlantic between Y1 and Y2 occurred in the other seasons. Over northern/northeastern SA, the positive precipitation anomalies became weaker (stronger) during austral summer and autumn (winter and spring) of the Y2 than Y1 and were associated with changes in the Walker cells. During austral spring and summer, southeastern presented drier conditions during the Y2 than Y1. In the spring of Y2, two Rossby wave trains, one associated with the LN‐related anomalous cooling in the equatorial Pacific and another triggered by the upper‐level anticyclone in the tropical Indian Ocean, characterized the circulation pattern over SA which explains the difference in precipitation anomalies between the Y2 and Y1. These drier (wetter) conditions during austral spring and summer (winter and spring), particularly over southern and southeastern Brazil (Colombia) in the Y2, might have more severe effects on the regional hydrological cycle than those in the Y1. This study addresses the interannual variability and trends in weather regimes in subtropical South America and their impact over Uruguay. Weather regimes are found by applying a clustering method to the sea level pressure field in every season. We evaluate for all seasons their frequency of occurrence and transition pathways among them, their statistical relationship with global climate variability modes and their impact on precipitation and temperature in Uruguay. Overall, we find that there are five weather regimes that represent well the atmospheric dynamics over all seasons with two additional regimes in austral winter. The interannual variability in their frequency of occurrence and preferred transitions are sensitive to the phases of El Niño–Southern Oscillation and to other modes of variability. In addition, some weather regimes show positive and others negative trends in their frequency of occurrence over the last 70 years. In particular, we find that the weather regime that represents the development of a low‐pressure system over Uruguay has a negative trend (10–15% over 70 years) in all seasons except spring. Nowadays, a challenge in Climate Science is the seasonal forecast and knowledge of the model's performance in different regions. The challenge in South America reflects its huge territory; some models present a good performance, and others do not. Nevertheless, reliable seasonal climate forecasts can benefit numerous decision-making processes related to agriculture, energy generation, and extreme events mitigation. Thus, given the few works assessing the ECMWF-SEAS5 performance in South America, this study investigated the quality of its seasonal temperature and precipitation predictions over the continent. For this purpose, predictions from all members of the hindcasts (1993–2016) and forecasts (2017–2021) ensemble were used, considering the four yearly seasons. The analyses included seasonal mean fields, bias correction, anomaly correlations, statistical indicators, and seasonality index. The best system's performance occurred in regions strongly influenced by teleconnection effects, such as northern South America and northeastern Brazil, in which ECMWF-SEAS5 even reproduced the extreme precipitation anomalies that happened in recent decades. Moreover, the system indicated a moderate capability of seasonal predictions in medium and low predictability regions. The representation of the South American Monsoon System (SAMS) by general circulation models (GCMs) is of key relevance for a better understanding of the physical rationale behind the recent climate changes over South Tropical South America (STSA) and their expected changes in a global warming scenario. During the last four decades, STSA experienced a lengthening of the dry season associated with diverse forcings. In this work, a set of 16 GCMs historical Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 coupled simulations were evaluated during 1979–2014 in terms of how well they reproduced the atmospheric circulation over STSA through a circulation‐patterns (CPs) approach. Nine CPs were first identified based on low‐level winds from the ERA5 reanalysis. Focus was put on the representation of CPs during the dry‐to‐wet transition season (July‐October). Model performance depended on the seasonal cycle and spatial structure of the CPs. GCMs adequately reproduced the different CPs, with lower skills in the transition seasons. GCMs tended to go from dry to wet conditions too quickly, evidencing deficiencies in the representation of the SAMS onset, related to a poor representation of the southerly wind intrusions to STSA and the variability of the South American low‐level jet. Some GCMs were able to associate the occurrence of anomalous dry and wet years with specific CPs, suggesting well‐represented physical mechanisms controlling precipitation variability. This study could identify a few GCMs that adequately simulated the CPs in STSA (among them, CESM2, CMCC‐CM2‐HR4 and MPI‐ESM1‐2‐HR), which is relevant for driving high‐resolution models and the analysis of future projections. In this study the simulated extreme and moderate El Niño events (e.g., frequency of occurrence and spatial variability) are characterized and the historical teleconnections on precipitation and temperature climate extremes in South America are analysed. Future projected changes in these teleconnections under a global warming context are also addressed. For this purpose a set of 10 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) global climate models (GCMs) simulations derived from three experiments (historical, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) are considered. The study period is 1916–2100. As El Niño is seasonally phase‐locked, peaking in late austral spring and summer, the present analysis is carried out for these two seasons, as well as annually. Results indicate that extreme El Niño events are projected to double their occurrence considering RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, while a less pronounced increase is projected for moderate El Niño events. Most of these events show a similar pattern of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies: a positive centre in the central equatorial Pacific that extends eastward to the coast of America. In a global warming context, the resemblance between these events may decrease. Overall, the spatial structure of the impacts of El Niño are expected to be similar between moderate and extreme events, although in some cases (regions and seasons), a higher intensity is observed considering the events characterized as extreme El Niños rather than moderate ones. As extreme El Niño events are expected to be more frequent in the future, the impacts on climate extremes as well as the associated socioeconomic impacts would also take place much more frequently too. Future projections in austral winter characteristics of explosive extratropical cyclones (EECs) in three CORDEX Southern Hemisphere domains (Africa-AFR, Australia-AUS and South America-SAM) are investigated. The projections are obtained with a fine resolution (25 km) Regional Climate Model (RegCM4) within the CORDEX-CORE framework driven by three Global Climate Models (GCMs: HadGEM2-ES, MPI-ESM-MR and NorESM-1 M) under the RCP8.5 scenario. The cyclone database was obtained using a tracking scheme applied to 6-hourly mean sea level pressure fields and EECs are selected using the Sanders and Gyakum criterion. EECs represent ~ 13–17% of the total number of extratropical cyclones during austral winter in the ERA-Interim reanalysis (1995–2014), while both GCMs and RegCM4 ensembles underestimate this percentage. The frequency of EECs is projected to increase in AFR and in SAM domains at the end of the twenty-first century. However, the magnitude of the projected changes needs to be considered with caution because it is smaller than the underestimations in the frequency of EECs of both ensembles in the present climate. EECs in the future will be deeper and faster but with a shorter lifetime. Eady Growth Rate composites, when EECs reach the explosive phase, indicate a less baroclinic large-scale environment in the future. On the other hand, the intensification of precipitation associated with EECs in the future indicates an increase in the contribution of the diabatic processes acting to strengthen the local baroclinicity of the EECs. Oceanic heat sources disturb the atmosphere, which, to come back to its initial state, disperses waves. These waves affect the climate in remote regions, characterizing the teleconnection patterns. In this study, we describe eight teleconnection patterns that affect South America climate: the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), the Tropical Atlantic Dipole (TAD), the South Atlantic Dipole (SAD), the Southern Annular Mode (SAM), the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO), and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). Precipitation and winds at 850‐hPa anomalies, considering these teleconnection patterns in ENSO neutral periods, are also presented. Overall, southeastern South America and the north sector of the North and Northeast regions of Brazil are the most affected areas by the teleconnection patterns. Abstract: This paper documents the main features of the climate and climate variability over South America, on the basis of instrumental observations gathered during the 20th Century. It should provide a modern reference framework for paleoclimate research in South America, targeting high-resolution proxies over the past few centuries. Several datasets suitable for present-day climate research are first described, highlighting their advantages as well as their limitations. We then provide a basic physical understanding of the mean annual cycle of the precipitation and atmospheric circulation over the continent and the adjacent oceans. In particular, the diversity of precipitation, temperature and wind patterns is interpreted in terms of the long meridional extent of the continent and the disruption of the large-scale circulation caused by the Andes cordillera, the contrasting oceanic boundary conditions and the landmass distribution. Similarly, the intensity and timing of the interannual and interdecadal climatic fluctuations exhibit considerable geographical dependence, as some regions are more influenced by large-scale phenomena rooted in the tropical oceans while others are more influenced by high-latitude phenomena. The impact of these large-scale phenomena over South America is documented by a regression analysis between selected atmospheric indices and the precipitation and temperature fields. We have included a discussion on the seasonality and long-term stability of such impacts, and complemented our general description by an updated review of the literature on climate variability over specific regions. Climate change will result in more dry days and longer dry spells; however, the resulting impacts on crop growth depend on the timing of these longer dry spells in the annual cycle. Using an ensemble of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 and phase 6 (CMIP5 and CMIP6) simulations, and a range of emission scenarios, here we examine changes in wet and dry spell characteristics under future climate change across the extended tropics in wet and dry seasons separately. Delays in the wet seasons by up to 2 weeks are projected by 2070–99 across South America, southern Africa, West Africa, and the Sahel. An increase in both mean and maximum dry spell length during the dry season is found across Central and South America, southern Africa, and Australia, with a reduction in dry season rainfall also found in these regions. Mean dry season dry spell lengths increase by 5–10 days over northeast South America and southwest Africa. However, changes in dry spell length during the wet season are much smaller across the tropics with limited model consensus. Mean dry season maximum temperature increases are found to be up to 3°C higher than mean wet season maximum temperature increases over South America, southern Africa, and parts of Asia. Longer dry spells, fewer wet days, and higher temperatures during the dry season may lead to increasing dry season aridity and have detrimental consequences for perennial crops. The interseasonal and interbasins hydrological coupling between the Amazon and the La Plata watersheds is obtained with the help of ERA-5 atmospheric reanalysis, MERGE/CPTEC precipitation, GLEAM evapotranspiration, and the GLDAS/Noah soil moisture datasets. The hypotheses formulated in a previous work by Zanin and Satyamurty about the hydrological processes interconnecting the Amazon Basin and the La Plata Basin are tested. A new method for finding the source–sink relationships among the boxes (regions) is presented. The precipitation recycling, frequency of source–sink behaviors, the soil moisture memory, and the continental moisture transport between remote regions are evaluated. The main result of this study is that the amount of water precipitated over the southeastern region of the Amazon Basin at the end of the South American monsoon during the autumn season influences the amount of precipitation during the winter season over the central-western region of the La Plata Basin. Modern precipitation over northeastern (NE) South America is strongly controlled by the seasonal meridional migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Ample evidence from the Northern Hemisphere suggests a mid‐ to late Holocene southward migration of the ITCZ. Such a shift would be expected to increase precipitation over semi‐arid northern NE Brazil (Southern Hemisphere). However, the most robust precipitation record from northern NE Brazil shows a drying trend throughout the Holocene. Here, we address this issue presenting a high‐temporal resolution reconstruction of precipitation over northern NE Brazil based on data from a marine sediment core, together with analyses of mid‐ and late Holocene simulations performed with the fully coupled climate model FGOALS‐s2. Both, our data and the climate model simulations show a decrease in precipitation over northern NE Brazil from the mid‐ to the late Holocene. The model outputs further indicate a latitudinal contraction of the seasonal migration range of the ITCZ that, together with an intensification of the regional Walker circulation, were responsible for the mid‐ to late Holocene changes in precipitation over NE South America. Our results reconcile apparently conflicting precipitation records and climate mechanisms used to explain changes in precipitation over NE South America. Plain Language Summary: The tropical rainbelt impacts food and water security for 1 billion people. Knowing its dynamics is of utmost importance. The suggestion of a southward migration of the tropical rainbelt through the Holocene (last 11,700 years) has influenced paleoclimatology for two decades. However, most of the available evidence supporting this suggestion comes from tropical Northern Hemisphere precipitation reconstructions like northernmost South America. They systematically show a decrease in precipitation through the Holocene. In the tropical Southern Hemisphere like northeastern Brazil, at the opposite side of the tropical rainbelt, precipitation reconstructions are, however, rare. We reconstructed mid‐ to late Holocene (last 5,200 years) changes in precipitation over northeastern Brazil (tropical Southern Hemisphere), where modern precipitation is associated with the southern border of the tropical rainbelt. We analyzed three independent indicators of changes in precipitation recorded in marine sediments collected off northeastern Brazil. All indicators suggest a decrease in precipitation over northeastern Brazil from the mid‐ to the late Holocene. Together with climate model simulations, our results indicate a latitudinal contraction of the tropical rainbelt. A Holocene contraction of the rainbelt, in contrast to a southward migration, reconciles apparently conflicting precipitation reconstructions and provides valuable insights into the dynamics of the tropical rainbelt. The study of the spatial and temporal variability of the precipitation concentration is necessary, due to its high environmental and socioeconomic impact. For this reason, this study aims to contribute to the knowledge of daily rainfall in southeastern South America. Daily records of precipitation for 48 stations are used (period 1979–2018) to calculate the concentration index (CI). High CI is linked to rapid physical processes such as convection, and low CI can be interpreted as a consequence of regular patterns such as the continuous passage of fronts. The spatial and temporal distribution of CI brings information about frequency and changes in heavy rainfall days. The spatial distribution of the CI at an annual level has a range of variation between 0.54 and 0.68. The CI temporal variation shows different regional behaviour. In Brazil, there is an increase in the CI, while in Uruguay and the north‐central part of Argentina negative trends are present in the four seasons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Assessing the regional and local impacts of climate changes on rainfall and streamflow patterns is often challenging, as most results tend to be very dispersed and inconsistent across models. We offer a complementary alternative for climate change impact studies by focusing primarily on climate indices. In particular, we analyse the historical and future variability of key climate indices associated with the South America Monsoon System (SAMS) as simulated by Coupled Model Intercomparison Project—Phase 5 (CMIP5) models. We use climate indices related to the tropical Atlantic interhemispheric surface temperature gradient, associated with the meridional position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), as well as the land‐ocean temperature contrast in the tropical Atlantic‐South America region, and the intensity and position of the South Atlantic Subtropical High (SASH). We selected 14 CMIP5 models to estimate climate indices for the retrospective period (1980–2005) and future period (2006–2099), the latter under the RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenarios. For comparison purposes during the retrospective period, the indices were also calculated using data from the Era‐Interim reanalysis. The seasonal behaviour of the Era‐Interim based indices is well reproduced by CMIP5 models, although the magnitude is significantly higher. For the future period, most models under both scenarios showed a consistent and asymmetrical intensification of the dipole index, suggesting, in a future climate, a potential wider displacement of the ITCZ during its seasonal cycle. As for the land‐ocean contrast index, the CMIP5 simulations indicated consistent increase in the magnitude for the positive phase (land warmer than ocean) and a decrease for the negative phase (land colder than ocean). Finally, CMIP5 models consistently predict a strengthening and southward displacement of the SASH centre. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to reveal future changes in climate indices associated with the SAMS that shows relevant coherences across models and scenarios. The precipitation behaviour at different timescales (interannual, intraseasonal and synoptic) and extreme events in a warmer scenario over South America is analysed. This study is based on a set of Regional Climate Models (RCM) from the CORDEX database and their driving Global Climate Models (GCM) from the CMIP5 Project. Historical simulations for 1979–2005 and from the RCP4.5 scenario for 2071–2100 are used. The projected changes in the precipitation behaviour are evaluated in terms of the consistency between the pairs RCM-GCM aiming to explore the added value of RCMs. The agreement between projected changes from RCMs is also evaluated as a measure of confidence of the regional climate change signal. The analysis is carried out for two extended seasons (April to September and October to March). The projected change in the mean precipitation over subtropical latitudes is associated with both changes in the frequency of rainy days and in the intensity of extreme events, while for the tropics the changes are mainly associated with changes in the wet day frequency. The increase of extreme precipitation events over the subtropics arises as a robust signal among models, while for tropical latitudes the dispersion among models is high, which reduces the confidence of the projections. In general, the consistency of the projections in the pairs RCM-GCM and the agreement among models are higher for the low frequency variability patterns during winter, while for summertime a better agreement in the projected changes of the precipitation behaviour at different timescales among RCMs is found. This work presents an analysis of the observed trends in extreme precipitation events in the Paraná River basin (PRB) from 1977 to 2016 (40 yr) based on daily records from 853 stations. The Mann–Kendall test and inverse-distance-weighted interpolation were applied to annual and seasonal precipitation and also for four extreme precipitation indices. The results show that the negative trends (significance at 95% confidence level) in annual and seasonal series are mainly located in the northern and northeastern parts of the basin. In contrast, except in the autumn season, positive trends were concentrated in the southern and southeastern regions of the basin, most notably for annual and summer precipitation. The spatial distributions of the indices of annual maximum 5-day precipitation and number of rainstorms indicate that significant positive trends are mostly located in the south-southeast part of the basin and that significant negative trends are mostly located in the north-northeast part. The index of the annual number of dry days shows that 88% of significant trends are positive and that most of these are located in the northern region of the PRB, which is a region with a high number of consecutive dry days (>90). The Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the leading driver of intraseasonal rainfall variability in the global tropics. However, the influence of MJO on western tropical South America (WTSA) has not been a focus of research. This is not surprising since the MJO convective core becomes nondescript as it propagates across the eastern Pacific, such that its influence on the Pacific coast of tropical South America is not obvious in global analyses. In this study, we examine MJO impacts on subseasonal rainfall variability in the rainiest season for WTSA (February–April). In order to avoid confusion with El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signals, only ENSO-neutral years are included in the analysis. We found that the MJO convective core reemerges when it propagates onto land in WTSA, and that it is associated with subseasonal precipitation anomalies of 20–50% relative to climatology. The MJO signal is evident in the real-time multivariate MJO (RMM) index; however, the signal is clearer when a custom subseasonal index for the region based on WTSA outgoing longwave radiation is employed. Dynamically, the MJO influence is consistent with a modulation of the Pacific Ocean Walker Circulation descending branch, which is climatologically located in or near WTSA. Furthermore, MJO drives zonal and vertical motions on moisture and wind fields that influence precipitation in the region. We found that the timing of deep convection on subseasonal timescales captured by the regional index is consistent with a dominant role of the MJO convective core, rather than propagation of equatorial Rossby or Kelvin waves. However, there is evidence that equatorial Rossby waves that emerge over the tropical Atlantic Ocean also influence precipitation in WTSA on MJO timescales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Six years of cloud to ground lighting strokes from Sferics Timing And Ranging NETwork (STARNET) and rain estimates from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM 3B42) gridded in a box of 1° × 1° of longitude by latitude have been combined to investigate how thunderstorm efficiency (rain yield − daily rain accumulations/daily number of strokes) varies spatially and seasonally over South America. Based on daily rain yields, 98% of the thunderstorms can be represented by four regimes: continental‐arid (106.5–107.5 kg per stroke), continental (107.5–108.5 kg per stroke), continental‐maritime (green‐ocean; 108.5–109.5 kg per stroke), and maritime (109.5–1010.5 kg per stroke). The continental‐arid regimes are found over the Andes Mountains while the continental regimes extend from southern to central northern South America. The continental‐maritime regime runs from the Amazon basin to northern South America, and the maritime regime is found over the ocean and along the coastline. Mean radar reflectivity profiles from coincident measurements of 2A25 TRMM‐Precipitation Radar obtained for each rain yield regimes show that (a) the continental regimes have a higher concentration of ice and supercooled water droplets above the 0 °C isotherm height; (b) maritime regimes have larger rain volumes in the warmer phase; (c) the continental‐arid regime shows the highest concentration of ice and supercooled water droplets at temperatures below −20 °C; (d) the continental‐maritime and maritime regimes are similar, but the continental‐maritime regime has slightly higher reflectivities (1–2 dBZ) and has greater 30‐dBZ height; and (e) the partition of ice and supercooled water droplets between 0 and −40 °C influences the lightning frequency. Plain Language Summary: Rain yield is a parameter that can be used as a benchmark to diagnose and compare thunderstorm efficiency worldwide. Efficient thunderstorms (more lightning per rainwater) have more ice particles above the freezing level, while the more efficient rainstorms (more rainwater per lightning) show higher‐precipitation amounts in the warm phase and low ice concentration aloft. The combination of continuous lightning and rainfall measurements over large areas and longer periods of time provides a unique framework to understand how those systems vary spatially and seasonally. In addition, by adding coincident 3‐D vertical precipitation features it is possible to identify which hydrometeors are helping in the electrification process. This study presents evidence that thunderstorms vary spatially and seasonally in South America and are influenced by topography, land cover, insulation, mesoscale circulations, and monsoon regimes. The number of paleoprecipitation records from the South American Monsoon domain that cover the last millennium has increased substantially in past years. However, hitherto most studies focused only on regional aspects, thereby neglecting the role of large‐scale monsoon variability and the mechanisms that link proxy locations in space and time. Here we decompose the South American Monsoon into its main modes of variability by applying a Monte Carlo principal component analysis to a compilation of 11 well‐dated summer paleoprecipitation records from tropical South America. The first mode represents changes in precipitation over the core monsoon domain, while the second mode is characterized by high loadings along the fringes of the South American Monsoon over Southeastern South America and the northern monsoon limit. Composite analysis reveals an enhanced monsoon with a wider, rather than a southward displaced, South Atlantic Convergence Zone during the early Little Ice Age, in contrast to previous interpretations. Due to the lack of data prior to the middle of the twentieth century, the long‐term variability of the monsoon is poorly understood. To better understand how the monsoon responds to such perturbations, detailed knowledge of how it varied in the past is crucial. Precipitation, low‐level flow and atmospheric moisture transport fields over the Intra‐Americas region from a Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) multi‐decadal simulation are presented. The period of analysis is 1982–2012, and the focus is on mean monthly states and their variability. WRF results are compared to global precipitation products and to the Interim Reanalysis from the ECWMF (ERA‐Interim). An analysis of the coupling between precipitation over northern South America and regional scale sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and winds within ERA‐Interim and WRF is also presented. Over land, precipitation biases in WRF are mostly positive, especially over Central America and northern South America. This bias is associated with an excess in atmospheric moisture convergence in WRF compared to ERA‐Interim, which in turn is related to stronger low‐level circulation structures and differences in the moisture transport field between WRF and ERA‐Interim at the regional scale. The largest differences in the flow are observed over the eastern Pacific, where the flow is correlated with precipitation over southern Mexico, Central America and northern South America during the boreal summer. During early winter, correlation patterns of WRF precipitation and SST anomalies over the tropical Pacific are substantially weaker over western Texas and northwestern South America compared to the coupling between the global precipitation products and observed SSTs. For northwestern South America, the low correlation seems to be associated to a lack of coupling between regional scale winds and SST anomalies. During the boreal summer, the coupling between Caribbean SSTs and precipitation over parts of Mexico and Central America is stronger in WRF compared to observation‐based products. Precipitation over northern South America is sensitive to sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies over the Pacific, especially during the driest season December–January. This relationship is evident in the correlation between SSTs over the Pacific and Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC)‐precipitation over the Colombian Andes (brown contours, top‐left panel). However, a regional climate simulation with Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) does not show such coupling during the early dry season (top right). Precipitation events are infrequent in the dry quarter (SON) of the Alcântara Launch Center (Centro de Lançamento de Alcântara, CLA), the main launch site of the Brazilian Space Program. However, their occurrence could be a risk for activities during launch missions. In this work, the observational features of wet days (daily precipitation total ≥ 1 mm/day) in the dry quarter of the CLA region were studied. Daily precipitation totals over the course of 37 years (1979-2016, except 2006), outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) data and ERA-Interim reanalysis data were used. On average, in the dry quarter, there were 9 wet days, which accumulated 32 mm. The number and quarterly precipitation total of wet days showed pronounced interannual variability. This variability was negatively and significantly correlated with the interhemispheric sea surface temperature anomalies gradient in the Atlantic Ocean and the wind speed at 925 hPa over the CLA region. Based on a theoretical distribution (lognormal), the probability of occurrence of heavy precipitation days (daily total ≥ 10 mm/day) was only 0.5%. For days with heavy precipitation and deep convection (OLR ≤ 230 W·m-2), over a large area along the northeastern coast of South America including the CLA region, negative OLR differences (from the mean) and the strengthening of favorable conditions for deep convection were found. The large-scale organization of the convective activity and atmospheric features for higher precipitation events obtained in this work could be helpful for nowcasting and short-range weather forecasting during launch missions at the CLA. Global climate models (GCMs) have, in general, problems representing precipitation over southern southeastern South America (SSESA), namely southern Brazil, Uruguay and eastern Argentina. In this study, 18 models were selected from the Coupled Model Inter‐comparison Project Phase 5 to evaluate rainfall of the warm semester (October–March) when most of the rain takes place. Though GCMs reproduce the main features of the two main low‐level circulation variability modes over southeastern South America, east of the Andes, particularly the two flow patterns associated with the active and weak SACZ, most of them underestimate the northern flow that brings water vapour into SSESA, as well as the mean precipitation in this region. According to an index that stands for the northern flow towards SSESA, all models, except one, have lower northern flow into SSESA than the observed reanalysis field. In addition, this index has a significant correlation across GCMs with mean SSESA precipitation, indicating that lower northern flow into SSESA is generally associated with a greater underestimation in the model precipitation. Hence, it is concluded that the weaker northern flow into SSESA simulated by most GCMs is a cause of their simulated lower precipitation in this region. Though Global climate models (GCMs) reproduce the main features of the low‐level circulation variability field over southeastern South America (SESA) and of the surrounding region, most of them underestimate the northern flow that brings water vapor into this region. Since, there is a significant correlation across GCMs between the underestimation of this flow and the average SESA precipitation, it is concluded that underestimation of the northern flow into SESA is one cause of the precipitation deficit by GCMS over this region. The intraseasonal variability of the frontal activity and its connection with the variability of the atmospheric circulation and precipitation in the Southern Hemisphere is studied. The frontal activity is defined as the relative vorticity times the local temperature gradient. A band-pass filter was applied to retain the intraseasonal timescales. An empirical orthogonal function analysis was applied to the filtered frontal activity anomalies. The two main modes show positive and negative centers located mainly over the southern Pacific Ocean and South American sector and are in quadrature with each other. A similar pattern was found when the main modes of intraseasonal variability of the 500 hPa geopotential height were projected on the frontal activity, suggesting that the variability of fronts are influenced by the variability of the large scale atmospheric circulation. Moreover, the precipitation anomalies projected on the main modes of both frontal activity and 500 hPa geopotential height show similar structures, especially over the southern Pacific Ocean and South America, which may indicate that the variability of fronts controls the variability of precipitation. The lagged regression of the time series of the frontal activity areally-averaged over one of the centers of action against the frontal activity anomaly field shows at lags −8 and 8 a similar pattern, suggesting a period of around 17 days for each mode. Moreover, lagged regression between times series of frontal activity and precipitation anomalies reveals an opposite pattern between southeastern South America and southern Chile, being precipitation anomalies over these two regions anti-correlated due to the frontal activity. The regional influence of the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) on South America is described. Maps of probability of weekly-averaged rainfall exceeding the upper tercile were computed for all seasons and related statistically with the phase of the MJO as characterized by the Wheeler-Hendon real-time multivariate MJO (RMM) index and with the OLR MJO Index. The accompanying surface air temperature and circulation anomalies were also calculated. The influence of the MJO on regional scales along with their marked seasonal variations was documented. During December-February when the South American monsoon system is active, chances of enhanced rainfall are observed in southeastern South America (SESA) region mainly during RMM phases 3 and 4, accompanied by cold anomalies in the extratropics, while enhanced rainfall in the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) region is observed in phases 8 and 1. The SESA (SACZ) signal is characterized by upper-level convergence (divergence) over tropical South America and a cyclonic (anticyclonic) anomaly near the southern tip of the continent. Impacts during March-May are similar, but attenuated in the extratropics. Conversely, in June-November, reduced rainfall and cold anomalies are observed near the coast of the SACZ region during phases 4 and 5, favored by upper-level convergence over tropical South America and an anticyclonic anomaly over southern South America. In September-November, enhanced rainfall and upper-level divergence are observed in the SACZ region during phases 7 and 8. The contribution of extreme convective storms to rainfall in South America is investigated using 15 years of high-resolution data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR). Precipitation from three specific types of storms with extreme horizontal and vertical dimensions have been calculated and compared to the climatological rain. The tropical and subtropical regions of South America differ markedly in the influence of storms with extreme dimensions. The tropical regions, especially the Amazon basin, have aspects similar to oceanic convection. Convection in the subtropical regions, centered on La Plata basin, exhibits patterns consistent with storm life cycles initiating in the foothills of the Andes and growing into larger mesoscale convective systems that propagate to the east. In La Plata basin, convective storms with a large horizontal dimension contribute ~44% of the rain and the accumulated influence of all three types of storms with extreme characteristics produce ~95% of the total precipitation in the austral summer. The La Plata River basin (LPRB) is the second largest basin of South America and extends over a highly populated and socioeconomically active region. In this study, the spatiotemporal variability of sources of moisture for the LPRB are quantified using an extended version of the Dynamic Recycling Model. Approximately 63% of mean annual precipitation over the LPRB comes from South America, including 23% from local LPRB sources and 20% from the southern Amazon. The remaining 37% comes mostly from the southern Pacific and tropical Atlantic Oceans. The LPRB depends largely on external sources during the dry winter season, when local evaporation reaches a minimum and moisture outflow increases. Variations in the transport of moisture from the Amazon to the LPRB depend more on variations of the atmospheric circulation than on evaporation, at both the monthly and daily time scale. In particular, weak atmospheric flow allows the accumulation of moisture over the Amazon basin, followed by an above-normal release of moisture downwind when the atmospheric flow strengthens again. Water vapor transport with these characteristics was observed for 20% of the days of the summer season during the 1980-2012 period, leading to higher-than-average convergence of moisture of terrestrial origin over the LPRB. During the positive (negative) phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), more (less) moisture from Amazonian evaporation reaches the LPRB. Machine learning has experienced great success in many applications. Precipitation is a hard meteorological variable to predict, but it has a strong impact on society. Here, a machine-learning technique—a formulation of gradient-boosted trees—is applied to climate seasonal precipitation prediction over South America. The Optuna framework, based on Bayesian optimization, was employed to determine the optimal hyperparameters for the gradient-boosting scheme. A comparison between seasonal precipitation forecasting among the numerical atmospheric models used by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE, Brazil) as an operational procedure for weather/climate forecasting, gradient boosting, and deep-learning techniques is made regarding observation, with some showing better performance for the boosting scheme. ABSTRACT This article quantifies the relationship between sea ice cover ( SIC) on the Southern Ocean and precipitation and river discharges over southeastern and eastern South America. The period of analysis covers from 1981 to 2008 and includes monthly mean data of SIC over the Ross, Amundsen-Bellingshausen and Weddell Seas, as well as atmospheric variables and discharges of selected rivers in eastern South America. To isolate the effect of known modes of climate variability on SIC, the signals of El Niño-Southern Oscillation and the Southern Annual Mode are removed from all time series through regression analysis. Composites of precipitation differences over South America reveal a pattern of enhanced rainfall activity over the South Atlantic Convergence Zone ( SACZ) in summer ( JFM) when SIC is above average particularly over the Weddell Sea area, while winter ( ASO) SIC anomalies show negative and significant correlations with rainfall over much of South America. Moisture fluxes patterns in summer reveal increased moisture transport towards the SACZ region and decreased low-level jet activity (and precipitation) over northern Argentina. In particular a large dry bias over southeastern South America associated to positive SIC anomalies on the Weddell Sea in September is shown to impact the discharges of the Uruguay and Iguazú Rivers, with the largest effects found two months after the SIC anomaly (November). Although less robust, a relationship with the Paraná River is also found. These results suggest that increased SIC over the Weddell Sea during September can help to forecast drier conditions particularly on the Uruguay basin and somewhat wetter conditions in the SACZ region within the following season. The dominant mode of coupled variability over the South Atlantic Ocean is known as 'South Atlantic Dipole' (SAD) and is characterized by a dipole in sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies with centers over the tropical and the extratropical South Atlantic. Previous studies have shown that variations in SST related to SAD modulate large-scale patterns of precipitation over the Atlantic Ocean. Here we show that variations in the South Atlantic SST are associated with changes in daily precipitation over eastern South America. Rain gauge precipitation, satellite derived sea surface temperature and reanalysis data are used to investigate the variability of the subtropical and tropical South Atlantic and impacts on precipitation. SAD phases are assessed by performing Singular value decomposition analysis of sea level pressure and SST anomalies. We show that during neutral El Niño Southern Oscillation events, SAD plays an important role in modulating cyclogenesis and the characteristics of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone. Positive SST anomalies over the extratropical South Atlantic (SAD negative phase) are related to increased cyclogenesis near southeast Brazil as well as the migration of extratropical cyclones further north. Ten years of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission precipitation radar data are used to study the physical properties of the precipitating cloud systems that account for the summer rainfall of tropical and subtropical South America. Radar echoes in the continental subtropics tend to be of an intensely convective nature, especially at the eastern foothills of the Andes where diurnally forced deep convective cells of small horizontal scale form when moist low-level flow is driven toward the foothills in connection with a midlatitude disturbance. As the disturbance moves east over the La Plata basin, nocturnal convective systems of larger horizontal scale with wide stratiform regions occur in a zone of general convergence. Precipitation in the continental tropics is generally produced by convective systems with greater stratiform composition. At the northeastern foothills of the central Andes, radar echoes of nocturnal convective systems of medium to large horizontal scale occur where moist low-level flow is lifted over the foothills. Growth of systems to large size is inhibited by daytime divergence at the foothills. Over the Amazon basin, daytime systems are also smaller than nocturnal systems. Radar echoes of precipitation over the Brazilian Highlands are generally smaller in horizontal scale, more convective, and mostly occur during the afternoon over elevated terrain. In the oceanic South Atlantic convergence zone, radar echoes grow to extremely large sizes. The South American monsoon system (SAMS) is the most important climatic feature in South America and is characterized by pronounced seasonality in precipitation during the austral summer. This study compares several statistical properties of daily gridded precipitation from different data (1998-2008): 1) Physical Sciences Division (PSD), Earth System Research Laboratory [1.0° and 2.5° latitude (lat)/longitude (lon)]; 2) Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP; 1° lat/lon); 3) Climate Prediction Center (CPC) unified gauge (CPC-uni) (0.5° lat/lon); 4) NCEP Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) (0.5° lat/lon); 5) NASA Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) reanalysis (0.5° lat/0.3° lon); and 6) Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B42 V6 data (0.25° lat/lon). The same statistical analyses are applied to data in 1) a common 2.5° lat/lon grid and 2) in the original resolutions of the datasets. All datasets consistently represent the large-scale patterns of the SAMS. The onset, demise, and duration of SAMS are consistent among PSD, GPCP, CPC-uni, and TRMM datasets, whereas CFSR and MERRA seem to have problems in capturing the correct timing of SAMS. Spectral analyses show that intraseasonal variance is somewhat similar in the six datasets. Moreover, differences in spatial patterns of mean precipitation are small among PSD, GPCP, CPC-uni, and TRMM data, while some discrepancies are found in CFSR and MERRA relative to the other datasets. Fitting of gamma frequency distributions to daily precipitation shows differences in the parameters that characterize the shape, scale, and tails of the frequency distributions. This suggests that significant uncertainties exist in the characterization of extreme precipitation, an issue that is highly important in the context of climate variability and change in South America. The majority of precipitation in central Chile falls during austral winter with the passage of surface and upper-level low pressure systems and their associated surface fronts. Earlier studies have found the presence of a terrain-parallel, low-level barrier jet during cold front passage and low-level wind convergence in the region of heaviest precipitation. This study advances these findings by developing multiyear climatologies for a rainfall event in central Chile using a broad cross section of observational datasets: the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) Global Surface Summary of the Day (GSOD), the Integrated Global Radiosonde Archive (IGRA), the Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT), and the NCEP-NCAR reanalysis. For this study, a precipitation event was defined as daily rainfall exceeding a certain threshold at a Santiago observing station (Pudahuel). Climatologies were developed for a five-day period surrounding the precipitation event: the three days leading up to the day of precipitation at Pudahuel, the day of the precipitation itself, and the day after. Precipitation was found to move northeastward over the southeast Pacific toward central Chile and increase in intensity upon reaching reached the coast between 33° and 40°S. At middle levels, a pronounced 500-hPa trough moved eastward and amplified during the same period, and at the surface, an area of low pressure deepened and followed the same path to the east. In the boundary layer and lower troposphere, winds at 925 and 850 hPa became exclusively north-northwesterly, suggesting the existence of a low-level jet, and surface winds backed with time and increased in speed ahead of a well-defined cold front wind shift. As these winds became more northwesterly ahead of the upper-level trough and surface low, precipitable water values increased, and a tongue of high precipitable water air intersected the coast at the same location as the region of heaviest precipitation. These climatologies, based on hundreds of cases, together provide strong confirmation that forcing associated with an eastward-progressing upper-level trough, a terrain-parallel low-level wind maximum, and an advancing surface cold front together constitute the complex, complementary mechanisms for precipitation in central Chile. Extreme orogenic convective storms in southeastern South America are divided into three categories: storms with deep convective cores, storms with wide convective cores, and storms containing broad stratiform regions. Data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite''s Precipitation Radar show that storms with wide convective cores are the most frequent, tending to originate near the Sierra de Cordoba range. Downslope flow at upper levels caps a nocturnally enhanced low-level jet, thus preventing convection from breaking out until the jet hits a steep slope of terrain, such as the Sierra de Cordoba Mountains or Andean foothills, so that the moist low-level air is lifted enough to release the instability and overcome the cap. This capping and triggering is similar to the way intense convection is released near the northwestern Himalayas. However, the intense storms with wide convective cores over southeastern South America are unlike their Himalayan counterparts in that they exhibit leading-line/trailing-stratiform organization and are influenced by baroclinic troughs more similar to storms east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States. Comparison of South American storms containing wide convective cores with storms in other parts of the world contributes to a global understanding of how major mountain ranges influence precipitating cloud systems. In this study, the authors document the extent to which the precipitation statistics of the new CFS reanalysis (CFSR) represent an improvement over the earlier reanalyses: the NCEP--NCAR reanalysis (R1) and the NCEP--DOE Second Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP-II) reanalysis (R2). An intercomparison between the CFSR, R1, R2, and observations over South America was made for the period 1979--2006. The CFSR shows notable improvements in the large-scale precipitation patterns compared with the previous reanalyses (R1 and R2). In spite of these improvements, the CFSR has substantial biases in intensity and frequency of occurrence of rainfall events. Over west-central Brazil, the core region of the South American monsoon system (SAMS), the CFSR displays a dry bias during the onset phase of the SAMS wet season and a wet bias during the peak and decay phases of the SAMS wet season. The CFSR also displays a dry bias along the South American coast near the mouth of the Amazon and along the east coast of northeastern Brazil. Observations, atmosphere models forced by historical SSTs, and idealized simulations are used to determine the causes and mechanisms of interannual to multidecadal precipitation anomalies over southeast South America (SESA) since 1901. About 40%% of SESA precipitation variability over this period can be accounted for by global SST forcing. Both the tropical Pacific and Atlantic Oceans share the driving of SESA precipitation, with the latter contributing the most on multidecadal time scales and explaining a wetting trend from the early midcentury until the end of the last century. Cold tropical Atlantic SST anomalies are shown to drive wet conditions in SESA. The dynamics that link SESA precipitation to tropical Atlantic SST anomalies are explored. Cold tropical Atlantic SST anomalies force equatorward-flowing upper-tropospheric flow to the southeast of the tropical heating anomaly, and the vorticity advection by this flow is balanced by vortex stretching and ascent, which drives the increased precipitation. The 1930s Pampas Dust Bowl drought occurred, via this mechanism, in response to warm tropical Atlantic SST anomalies. The atmospheric response to cold tropical Pacific SSTs also contributed. The tropical Atlantic SST anomalies linked to SESA precipitation are the tropical components of the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation. There is little evidence that the large trends over past decades are related to anthropogenic radiative forcing, although models project that this will cause a modest wetting of the climate of SESA. As such, and if the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation has shifted toward a warm phase, it should not be assumed that the long-term wetting trend in SESA will continue. The mechanisms associated with the intraseasonal variability of precipitation over South America during the spring season are investigated with emphasis on the influence of a quasi-stationary anomalous circulation over the southeastern South Pacific Ocean (SEP). A spectral analysis performed to the bandpass-filtered time series of daily precipitation anomalies for the La Plata Basin (LPB) and the South Atlantic convergence zone (SACZ) regions revealed several statistically relevant peaks corresponding to periods of roughly 23 days and 14–16 days—with the lower (higher) frequency peaks more prevalent for the SACZ (LPB). The large-scale circulation patterns preconditioning precipitation variability over both regions were explored by means of a regression analysis performed on the daily 500-hPa geopotential anomaly field provided by the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis dataset. The most prominent feature of the regression fields is the presence of a quasi-stationary anomalous anticyclonic (cyclonic) circulation over the southeastern South Pacific Ocean associated with positive rainfall anomalies over the LPB (SACZ) and, emanating from that high (low), an external Rossby wave propagating northeastward toward the South American continent. The synoptic-scale activity, quantified in terms of a frontal activity index, showed a strong influence on precipitation over the LPB and to a lesser extent over the SACZ. Moreover, the frontal activity is actually modulated by the anomalous high circulation over the SEP region. The behavior of this anomalous circulation may be supported by a positive feedback mechanism that can enhance the response of the high anomaly itself, which in turns reinforces the Rossby wave train propagating toward the South American continent. This work presents an updated climatology of blocking episodes for the Southern Hemisphere between 1960 and 2000, based on data from NCEP/NCAR reanalysis. Five contiguous areas of blocking activity are considered; Southeastern Pacific, Southwestern Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Oceania. The impact of the three most important areas of onset blocking episodes (Southeastern Pacific, Atlantic and Oceania) upon the climate of the adjacent continental areas (South America and Australia) was evaluated. Composites of the meteorological variables (temperature and precipitation) were obtained for periods of diagnosed blockings. The impact of the blocking episodes over the climate of South America and Australia is highlighted whenever anomaly fields of temperature and precipitation are significant at the 5% and 10% levels, respectively. Impacts of Southeastern Pacific and Atlantic blockings are observed on the temperature field over several regions of South America. Significantly higher (lower) temperatures than climatology occur in southern Brazil, northern Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, and lower (higher) than climatology in the extreme south of South America for the Southeastern Pacific (Atlantic) blocking episodes. Precipitation over South America is also affected by the Southeastern Pacific and Atlantic blockings in different ways. The Southeastern Pacific blocking has higher impact on precipitation in summer (dry conditions in northeast Brazil) and spring (wet conditions in central and southern Brazil), while the Atlantic blocking affects precipitation in autumn and winter (wet conditions in parts of central and southern Brazil). The blocking cases over Oceania affect southeastern Australia with normal to higher than climatological precipitation and with negative temperature anomalies in that region. Finally we provide a detailed analysis of a South Atlantic blocking episode, which occurred between the 4th and the 8th of June 1997. This event shows clearly the split of the jet stream into two branches (subtropical and polar) surrounding the anticyclonic sector, and satellite imagery revealed the presence of transient systems in the periphery of the blocking anticyclone responsible for high values of precipitation in the southeastern sector of South America. The Southern Annular Mode (SAM, also known as the Antarctic Oscillation—AAO) explains most of the climate variability in the Southern Hemisphere. A ring pattern in mean sea level pressure (MSLP) or 500 hPa geopotential height around Antarctica characterizes SAM. Differences of MSLP values between SH mid and high latitudes define positive and negative SAM phases with impacts on mean atmospheric circulation. Thus, investigating how different models represent SAM is of paramount importance, as it can improve their ability to describe or even predict most of the SH climate variability. Here we examine how the Brazilian Earth System Model (BESM) represents SAM's signal compared with observations, reanalysis, and other climate models contributing to the Coupled Modeling Intercomparison Project version 5 (CMIP5). Daily precipitation data from three stations in subtropical Argentina are used to describe intraseasonal variability (20–90 days) during the austral summer. This variability is compared locally and regionally with that present in outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) data, in order to evaluate the performance of this variable as a proxy for convection in the region. The influence of the intraseasonal activity of the South American Seesaw (SASS) leading convection pattern on precipitation is also explored. Results show that intraseasonal variability explains a significant portion of summer precipitation variance, with a clear maximum in the vicinity of the SASS subtropical center. Correlation analysis reveals that OLR can explain only a small portion of daily precipitation variability, implying that it does not constitute a proper proxy for precipitation on daily timescales. On intraseasonal timescales, though, OLR is able to reproduce the main features of precipitation variability. The dynamical conditions that promote the development of intraseasonal variability in the region are further analyzed for selected summers. Seasons associated with a strong intraseasonal signal in precipitation variability show distinctive wet/dry intraseasonal periods in daily raw data, and are associated with a well defined SASS-like spatial pattern of convection. During these summers, strong large-scale forcing (such as warm El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events and/or tropical intraseasonal convective activity), and Rossby-wave-like circulation anomalies extending across the Pacific Ocean, are also observed.
