Cardiovascular changes have been reported in late pregnancy in mares. However, there are no data on changes in peripheral blood flow. Doppler ultrasound represents a sensitive method for assessing the blood flow directed to the hoof. The aims of this study were to evaluate the blood flow parameters of the lateral palmar digital artery (LPDA) in pregnant mares and to assess intra- and interrater agreement between two observers with different levels of experience. The LPDAs of pregnant Italian Standardbred mares were examined. The vessels were located with B-mode ultrasound and analyzed with color and pulsed wave Doppler. The following parameters were recorded by the operators: heart rate (HR), peak systolic velocity (PSV), end-diastolic velocity (EDV), and resistive index (RI). Measurements were performed between 2 and 3 months of gestation (T1), in the last month of pregnancy (T2) and a week after delivery (T3). Seventeen mares aged 3-18 years met the inclusion criteria. Ultrasound examinations of the LPDA were subjectively easy to perform and well tolerated by the mares. Interrater and intrarater agreement were good and moderate, respectively. The HR was higher at T2 than at T1 and T3. The PSV and RI changed significantly during pregnancy, with higher values at T2 and T3, whereas the EDV remained unchanged throughout the examination. Doppler examination showed that peripheral flow changes were present in mares in late pregnancy. However, the persistence of higher values after delivery invites further investigation to assess the correlation between metabolic/endocrine changes related to pregnancy and Doppler parameters., (© 2024 American College of Veterinary Radiology.)

The aim of this study was to compare uterine and umbilical artery blood flow and fetal heart rate (FHR) in small, medium and large body weight (BW) dogs during the second half of pregnancy. Purebred pregnant bitches were assigned to one of the following groups according to their BW: small (S; ≤10 kg), medium (M; 11-25 kg) and large (L; >25-45 kg). Uterine and umbilical Doppler and M-mode ultrasonography was conducted every 10 days from Day 30-60 (Day 0 = first day of gestation). From Day 40, uterine and umbilical artery resistance index (RI) progressively and differentially decreased in the three groups (P < 0.01) being less in L than S bitches (P < 0.01). Litter size but not maternal BW (P > 0.1) affected uterine RI on Days 40 (r = 0.39; P < 0.01) and 50 (r = 0.41; P < 0.01). Conversely, on Day 60, maternal BW (r = 0.61; P < 0.01) had an effect on uterine RI while litter size did not (P > 0.1). Fetal heart rate increased from Day 30-50 and decreased to the time of parturition (P < 0.01) without differences among groups at any time point (P > 0.1). Uterine and umbilical blood flow differentially increased throughout mid- and late-pregnancy in breeds with large and small BW. These differences were affected by litter size on Days 40 and 50, and by maternal BW on Day 60. Conversely, during this same period, FHR did not vary among BW groups. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the uterine artery blood flow during the second half of normal pregnancy in small breed dogs and to determine the RI reference values of this artery in these bitches. Fifty-two, 1.5-6.5 kg, purebred healthy pregnant bitches were included in this study. Doppler ultrasonographic examinations of the uterus were performed every 10 days from Day 30 of the estrous cycle to parturition. Peak systolic velocity (PSV) and end diastolic velocity (EDV) of the uterine artery were measured while RI [(PSV-EDV)/PSV] was automatically calculated. Values of PSV, EDV and RI were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA followed by Tukey test using age, body weight, litter size and parity as covariates. Resistance index reference ranges were constructed by regressing this index on gestational age. Equation of the polynomial regression curves was used to calculate the mean, 95th and 5th centiles for each gestational age (GA). A gradual increase of PSV (P < 0.01) and EDV (P < 0.01) and a decrease in RI (P < 0.01) were found throughout the study period. PSV and EDV were influenced by litter size (P < 0.05), while RI was not. None of the Doppler parameters were influenced by age, body weight or parity. A second-degree polynomial described the relationship between RI of uterine artery and GA in the different time points: [RI = 0.993 + 8.4x10-5 x GA2- 0.0117 x GA]. It is concluded that uterine artery blood flow progressively increased throughout normal pregnancy in small breed bitches. In addition, reference ranges of uterine artery RI were 0.64-0.79, 0.57 to 0.75, 0.53 to 0.71 and 0.52 to 0.66 on Days 30, 40, 50 and 60 of gestation, respectively., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. In sheep, there is a lack of information on the behaviour of hemodynamic indices and parameters of blood flow velocity of the uterine artery during pregnancy, making it impossible to determine the real meaning of the values found and their probable relevance in normal physiological or pathological states. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the blood flow velocity parameters and hemodynamic indices of the uterine artery in ewes (18) during pregnancy (33). Based on non-invasive colour Doppler sonography, we evaluated the peak systolic velocity (PS), end diastolic velocity (ED), time-averaged maximum and minimum velocity in a cardiac cycle (TAMAX and TAMEAN), pulsatility index (PI), resistance index (RI), systolic/diastolic ratio (S/D), heart rate (HR), arterial diameter (AD) and the blood flow volume (BFV). Examinations started on day 28 and continued at two-week intervals until parturition. The Doppler parameters and the diameter of the uterine artery underwent significant changes during pregnancy. In the evaluated animals, indices related to resistance of the uterine artery, namely the impedance of blood flow, decreased throughout the initial, middle and late stages of gestation (PI: 1.15, 1.04, 0.97; RI: 0.61, 0.59, 0.57; S/D: 2.68, 2.52, 2.39, respectively) (p < 0.05). In contrast, the contents related to higher uterine irrigation increased during gestation (PS, ED, TAMAX, TAMEAN, HR, AD and BFV) (p < 0.05). No differences were found between the means of the variables in relation to the right and left uterine arteries and between single and multiple pregnancies in the hemodynamic indices. In contrast to cattle or horses, uterine blood flow in small ruminants has been investigated predominantly after surgical intervention and chronic instrumentation. The objective of the present study was to investigate the clinical applicability of noninvasive color Doppler sonography to characterize blood flow in the maternal uterine artery of sheep, n = 11 (18 pregnancies) and goats, n = 11 (20 pregnancies). The following parameters were measured transrectally or transabdominally: blood flow volume, time-averaged maximum velocity (TAMV), resistance index (RI), pulsatility index (PI), Time-averaged mean velocity, impedance of blood flow (AB or systolic/diastolic [S/D] velocity ratio), peak velocity of blood flow and blood flow acceleration. Examinations started 2 weeks after breeding and continued at 2-week intervals until parturition. Outcomes for sheep and goats were similar and will be discussed together. Based on noninvasive color Doppler sonography, blood flow volume increased (approximately 60-fold, P < 0.0001) until the end of pregnancy, with a rapid increase early in gestation, and a slow increase after week 18. Time-averaged maximum velocity in the uterine artery increased (approximately 4-fold; P < 0.0001) throughout pregnancy in sheep and goats. Furthermore, for uterine artery blood flow, there was an effect of stage of pregnancy on PI and RI (P < 0.001 and P < 0.0001, respectively), both indices decreased until the end of gestation. Time-averaged mean velocity decreased from week 18 to 20 in both species. The blood flow acceleration increased (P < 0.0001) until week 16 and week 14 in sheep and goats, respectively, and then decreased until parturition. Similar to PI and RI, vascular impedance of the uterine decreased (P < 0.0001) throughout pregnancy. This is apparently the first study using noninvasive color Doppler sonography of uterine blood flow throughout physiological pregnancy in small ruminants. Transrectal color Doppler ultrasonography is a useful technique to get new information about physiologic and pathophysiologic alterations of the uterus and ovaries in female cattle. During all reproductive stages characteristic changes in uterine blood flow are observed. Cows with puerperal disturbances show delayed decrease in uterine blood flow in the first few weeks postparturition compared with healthy cows. Measurement of follicular blood flow is used to identify normally developing follicles and predict superovulatory response. Determination of luteal blood is more reliable than B-mode sonography to distinguish between functional and nonfunctional corpora lutea. The aim of this study was to measure uterine artery blood velocity daily using Doppler ultrasonography in 10 young and 10 older clinically normal bitches throughout oestrus. Typical arterial waveforms identified in young bitches were characterised by a systolic peak and subsequent flow throughout diastole, whereas in older bitches, flow was sometimes absent in diastole. For 3 days immediately prior to ovulation, at the time of declining plasma oestrogen and increasing progesterone concentrations, resistance index (RI) increased, principally associated with decreased diastolic velocity; in some bitches there was absent late diastolic flow during this time. In older bitches, the waveform appearance was more variable, with absent late and early diastolic flow observed in some cases. Mean RI was higher throughout oestrus for older bitches compared with young bitches, although both groups had a similar 3-day duration increase before ovulation. Nine of the young bitches and five of the older bitches became pregnant; litter size was smaller for the older bitches. Non-pregnant bitches: (1) were significantly older; (2) had fewer waveforms with continuous diastolic flow 2 days before ovulation; (3) had lower end diastolic velocity, higher RI and fewer waveforms with continuous diastolic flow 2 days after ovulation, and (4) had lower plasma progesterone concentrations 5 days after ovulation. These are the first detailed observations of uterine artery blood velocity and waveform appearance throughout oestrus in bitches, and this is the first description of a link between impaired diastolic flow and reduced fertility. Assessment of uterine artery velocity could be useful to promote understanding of physiological mechanisms and could also become an important tool to assess potential infertility., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Yorkshire gilts either remained in their individual stall from d 40 to term (CON; n = 7) or were subjected to exercise for 30 min 3 times per week from mid to late gestation (EX; n = 7) to determine the impact of increased maternal activity during gestation on maternal behavior, fetal growth, umbilical blood flow, and parturition. In parity 1, maternal body composition (10th rib back fat and LM area), maternal behavior, and farrowing characteristics were recorded. In parities 1 and 2, fetal growth, fetal heart rate, pulsatility index and resistance index, and umbilical blood flow were monitored beginning at d 39 of gestation continuing to d 81 of gestation. Exercise continued until d 104. Gilts allowed to exercise sat less (P < 0.01), stood more (P < 0.01), tended (P = 0.06) to lie down less, and had fewer postural changes (P < 0.01) compared with CON gilts. Umbilical blood flow increased (P < 0.01) in EX compared with CON gilts. Moreover, gilts had greater (P < 0.01) umbilical blood flow in their first parity compared with their second. Indices of vascular resistance were not affected (P ≥ 0.15) by maternal treatment; however, EX gilts reached peak pulsatility index earlier than CON gilts (56.2 vs. 64.3 ± 3.6 d). Fetal weights, piglet birth weights, placental weight, interval between piglet births, and blood lactate of newborn piglets were unaffected (P ≥ 0.15) by maternal treatment. Although maternal exercise during gestation in the pig increased umbilical blood flow and appeared to reduce maternal restlessness, impacts on offspring development in postnatal life are not known.

With the advancement of gestation, blood flow increases preferentially to the caruncular bed of the gravid uterus in association with a decreasing sensitivity of the uterus to the vasoconstrictive effects of circulating catecholamines. This study directly compared the sensitivity of the caruncular artery (CA) of the isolated bovine placentome to phenylephrine (PE), a specific alpha 1-adrenergic receptor (AR) agonist, with that to norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (E), both of which are alpha 1-, alpha 2-, and beta-AR agonists, at two stages of gestation (140 to 170 d, mid-pregnant; 210 to 270 d, late pregnant). The CA of each placentome was perfused with oxygenated Krebs Ringer solution into which PE, NE or E were administered; increases in intra-arterial pressure were recorded. Further, NE content and numbers of alpha 1- and alpha 2-AR in the CA, intercaruncular arteries (ICA) and uterine arteries (UA) were quantitated. The CA from mid-pregnant cows exhibited greater (P less than .05) contractile responses to NE and E than did the CA from late pregnant cows, whereas responsiveness to PE remained constant. No difference in NE content, alpha 1-AR or alpha 2-AR numbers were observed in the UA, ICA or CA between mid-pregnant or late pregnant cows. Alpha 1-AR numbers were similar in CA, ICA and UA. However, CA contained threefold greater alpha 2-AR numbers than either the ICA or UA (50.2 +/- 6.1 vs 14.6 +/- 1.6 and 14.8 +/- 2.4 fmol/mg protein, respectively; P less than .01).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Twenty fetal lambs were studied in utero using continuous wave Doppler ultrasound to analyse the fetal umbilical artery flow velocity waveforms. Satisfactory waveforms were obtained. Prepregnancy surgical removal of uterine caruncles was used to produce intrauterine fetal growth retardation in 14 of these ovine pregnancies of whom 8 delivered a small for gestational age fetus. In only one fetus was the umbilical artery flow velocity waveform abnormal with a high systolic diastolic ratio. We conclude that the growth restriction occurring in the ovine fetus following a reduction of placental implantation sites is not related to a restriction in the fetoplacental circulation and this is different from the most frequently observed human fetal growth retardation.

A chronic animal model is described which permits for the first time the continuous measurement of uterine artery blood flow velocity in the pregnant guinea-pig by using a miniaturized Doppler flow probe. Preliminary validation revealed that alterations in actual blood flow are directly and proportionally related to the change in the Doppler shift (r = 0.984) from 0 to 100 ml/h. The velocity signal baseline was as stable as that of systemic blood pressure. Depending upon the individual animal's flow velocity, a deviation of 2-5% from baseline was statistically significant. With experience, greater than 90% of preparations were successful and a 30-day interval was often available for study. Uterine artery flow velocity increased steadily between 45 and 55 days of gestation. Instrumentation did not result in fetal growth retardation. A reduction in flow velocity occurred during general anaesthesia using ketamine and the antianxietal xylazine. In agreement with the reports of other investigators using a different model, both hydralazine and angiotensin II increased uterine blood velocity and adrenaline reduced it.

Blood flow to each uterine horn of cows during the oestrous cycle and early pregnancy was determined daily by use of electromagnetic blood flow probes placed around both middle uterine arteries. The pattern of blood flow to uteri of pregnant and non-pregnant cows was similar until Day 14 after mating or oestrus. Between Days 14 and 18 of pregnancy blood flow to the uterine horn containing the conceptus increased (P less than 0.01) 2- to 3-fold, whereas blood flow to the non-gravid uterine horn in these cows remained constant. No corresponding increase in blood flow to the uterine horn ipsilateral to the ovary bearing the CL was observed in non-pregnant cows during this 4-day period. By Day 19 of pregnancy, blood flow to the gravid uterine horn had returned to a level similar to that observed on Day 13. Blood flow to both uterine horns of pregnant cows remained constant from Days 19 to 25 and then increased to the gravid horn (P less than 0.01) markedly until Day 30 whereas blood flow to the non-gravid horn remained low. Uterine blood flow during the oestrous cycle of non-pregnant cows was positively correlated (P less than 0.01) with systemic concentrations of oestradiol and the ratio of oestradiol (pg/ml) to progesterone (ng/ml). There was no association between oestradiol concentrations and blood flow to the gravid uterine horn. These data indicate local control of uterine blood flow by the bovine conceptus which may function to create optimal conditions for the continuation of pregnancy.
