Developing green and simple methods for the preparation of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) is of great significance. Herein, a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) system based on choline chloride (ChCl) and citric acid (CA) is employed to pretreat cellulose fibers for the preparation of CNFs. The effect of the pretreatment temperature on the chemo-physical properties of the CNFs is comprehensively investigated. A high CNFs yield of up to 84.19% can be achieved under optimized conditions. The optimal CNFs show a narrow diameter distribution and length up to several microns, high crystallinity and thermal stability, as well as excellent dispersibility in water. Furthermore, semi-transparent and flexible cellulose nanopaper (CNP) was fabricated through a facile vacuum filtration process. The optimal CNP shows high tensile strength (175.15 MPa) and toughness (7.51 MJ/m3). Therefore, this work provides a sustainable and facile approach to fabricate CNFs and CNP, which can be potentially used for various high-tech applications.

Flexible pressure sensors have attracted considerable attention because of their potential applications in healthcare monitoring and human-machine interactions. However, the complicated fabrication process and the cos of sensing materials limit their widespread applications in practice. Herein, a flexible pressure sensor with outstanding performances is presented through an extremely simple and cost-efficient fabrication process. The sensing materials of the sensor are based on low-cost carbon black (CB)@airlaid paper (AP) composites, which are just prepared by drop-casting CB solutions onto APs. Through simply stacking multiple CB@APs with an irregular surface and a fiber-network structure, the obtained pressure sensor demonstrates an ultrahigh sensitivity of 51.23 kPa-1 and an ultralow detection limit of 1 Pa. Additionally, the sensor exhibits fast response time, wide working range, good stability, as well as excellent flexibility and biocompatibility. All the comprehensive and superior performances endow the sensor with abilities to precisely detect weak air flow, wrist pulse, phonation, and wrist bending in real time. In addition, an array electronic skin integrated with multiple CB@AP sensors has been designed to identify spatial pressure distribution and pressure magnitude. Through a biomimetic structure inspired by blooming flowers, a sensor with the open-petal structure has been designed to recognize the wind direction. Therefore, our study, which demonstrates a flexible pressure sensor with low cost, simple preparation, and superior performances, will open up for the exploration of cost-efficient pressure sensors in wearable devices.

Latent fingermarks (FMs) present unique, and sometimes the only, evidence found at a crime scene. Several factors affect their quality, including deposition pressure (DP). Its effect on FM size and quality, and on STR amplification success rate, is an emerging area of interest in forensic science. This study examined 540 FM samples, each consisting of index, middle and ring fingers, deposited by 30 donors on glass, polythene (PE) and paper under a range of weights from 0.1 to 10 kg. Both length and width of FMs increased with the increasing DP. FMs deposited under lower (≤0.5 kg) DPs varied in size (p 0.01), while those deposited at higher (≥3 kg) DPs were more consistent. FM quality on glass and PE, as determined by the AFIS minutiae count and by a fingerprint examiner on a scale from 0 to 4, improved with the increasing DP, but it deteriorated on PE at DP of 10 kg. FM quality on paper continued to improve from DP of 1 kg up to the maximum DP of 10 kg. The effect DP has on the efficacy of DNA profiling from latent FMs was significant as shown by an increase in the DNA amount recovered, the number of amplified loci per FM sample, and the number of forensically useful DNA profiles (defined here as those with ≥8 full STR loci detected) as DP increased. This effect was most pronounced with PE (R = 0.98) and paper (R = 0.96). Altogether, the success rate of DNA profiling varied from 16.3% in FMs deposited on paper to 21.2% and 22.5% of those on PE and glass. The highest number of useful DNA profiles was obtained from glass under DP of 10 kg. Forensically useful FMs obtained at low (≤1 kg) DP from all three substrates significantly outnumbered that of STR profiles, while an opposite, though less pronounced trend, was observed at high (≥3 kg) DP on PE and paper. Application of the simple device for collecting of FMs under controlled pressure designed for this study, and the palm-up mode of FM deposition as described, allowed us to eliminate the undesirable effect of the hand self-weight and to objectively assess the actual effect of increasing DP on FM size and quality, as well as on the efficacy of DNA profiling.

BACKGROUND: Sneezes produce many pathogen-containing micro-droplets with high velocities of 4.5-50.0 m/s. Face masks are believed to protect people from infection by blocking those droplets. However, current filtration efficiency tests can't evaluate masks under sneeze-like pressure. The goal of this study was to establish a method to evaluate the filtration efficiency of mask materials under extreme conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Efficiency of surgical masks, gauze masks, gauze, cotton, silk, linen and tissue paper on blocking micro-droplet sized starch particles (average 8.2 µm) and latex microspheres (0.75 µm) with a velocity of 44.4 m/s created by centrifugation was qualitatively analyzed by using imaging-based analysis. RESULTS: The 4 layers of silk could block 93.8% of microspheres and 88.9% of starch particles, followed by the gauze mask (78.5% of microspheres and 90.4% of starch particles) and the 2 layers of cotton (74.6% of microspheres and 87.5-89.0% of particles). Other materials also blocked 53.2-66.5% of microspheres and 76.4%-87.9% of particles except the 8 layers of gauze which only blocked 36.7% of particles. The filtration efficiency was improved by the increased layers of materials. CONCLUSION: Centrifugation-based filtration efficiency test not only compensates shortcomings of current tests for masks, but also offers a simple way to explore new mask materials during pandemics. Common mask materials can potentially provide protection against respiratory droplet transmission.

Lignin in chemical pulping waste, or black liquor (BL), can be converted into various products via supercritical water gasification (SCWG). However, the inherited alkaline contents from the pulping chemicals may affect the product yields and properties. In this research, the influence of the residual alkali on the product distribution via SCWG of soda BL and kraft BL was evaluated. The SCWG was performed in a batch quartz reactor for 10 min at various temperatures (673, 773 and 873 K) and pressures (250, 300 and 400 bar). The highest hydrogen (H2) production occurred at 873 K for the soda BL. The water–gas shift reaction with sodium ions played an important part in the H2 production, while only small amounts of methane and carbon monoxide were detected. We present an innovative, simple, and versatile hydrophobic valve enabling all-important complex liquid manipulations on self-powered, channel-based microfluidic devices and as such being extremely valuable for the design of highly demanding point-of-care (POC) platforms. The presented hydrophobic valve is made of filter paper treated with a fluorinated compound (i.e., Aquapel) and shows both superhydrophobic properties (contact angle up to 155°) and high resistance to liquid pressure (up to 9 kPa), while retaining gas permeability and utter fabrication simplicity. Whereas this valve can be integrated in any channel-based system and can be used both as a vent, to delay liquid displacement on chip, or as a barrier, to stop the liquid flow in a certain direction, in this work we demonstrate some of its capacities by combining it with our in house developed self-powered SIMPLE and iSIMPLE platforms. First, we integrated it with the infusion iSIMPLE pump, thus generating completely fail-proof activation regardless of how the operator is actuating the system. Second, we used hydrophobic valves as both barrier and vent in the same microfluidic chip, which allowed the combination of two SIMPLE pumps for splitting one sample in two parallel channels. This attribute is fundamental for achieving multiplex analysis on completely autonomous microfluidic platforms. Finally, we achieved an unprecedented liquid manipulation for a self-powered microfluidic platform, namely, shuttling of liquid, after a single user activation by combining for the first time SIMPLE and iSIMPLE with the developed hydrophobic vent and barrier, all in a single chip. A novel paper electrode-based flexible pressure sensor modified with multiwalled carbon nanotubes was designed for point-of-care (POC) immunoassay of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) with digital multimeter readout. The portable POC testing device consisted of flexible pressure sensor equipped with a paper electrode and connected through syringe tubing to a single-break microplate. The immunoreaction was initially carried out on the microplate with a sandwich-type assay format using platinum nanozyme-labeled secondary antibody for the gas generation. Upon addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), platinum nanozyme (catalase-like mimic) reduced it into hydrogen oxide and oxygen (O2). The overflowing oxygen gas increased the pressure of the multiwalled carbon nanotube-functionalized paper electrode in a homemade pressure-tight system, and the increased pressure could be readily monitored using the paper electrode-based flexible pressure-tight sensor with a digital multimeter readout. This paper investigates online moisture measurement of biofuel employing a strip line cavity resonator at approximately 366 MHz, attached above and below the conveyor belt. An existing sensor design is modified for the factory assembly, and the correct operation has been tested prior to this paper with a small number of measurement points and collected reference samples (n = 67). The purpose is now to concentrate on the accuracy of the measurement and increase the number of measurement points (n = 367). The measurements were made in 5 different lots, and the thickness and moisture properties of the biomaterial mat were varied between minimum and maximum levels by adjusting the settings of the belt filter press that presses pulp slush into a mat. In order to further reduce inaccuracy, at the maximum one standard deviation was allowed from the average height of the equivalent water layer for each dataset, and consequently the number of samples was reduced to 235. A linear fit and a parabola fit were determined for thickness of the equivalent water layer vs. the relative resonant frequency shift: R2 = 0.82 and R2 = 0.78.

Mixed sludge from a pulp and paper mill was hydrothermally carbonized at 180–260 °C for 0.5–5 h with the use of HCl or NaOH for determining the effect of acid and base additions during sludge carbonization. Based on the results carbonization was mainly governed by dehydration, depolymerization and decarboxylation of sludge components. Additive type had a statistically significant effect on hydrochar carbon content and carbon and energy yield, of which especially energy yield increased through the use of HCl. The theoretical energy efficiencies of carbonization increased with decreasing reaction temperature, retention time and the use of HCl and suggested that the energy requirement could be covered by the energy content of attained hydrochar. The BOD5/COD-ratios of analyzed liquid samples indicated that the dissolved organic components could be treated by conventional biological methods.

This paper is devoted to study a structure of SiC-based materials using ultrasonic tomography method. The SiC-based materials were fabricated from preceramic paper using spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. Also as part of the study the Young's modulus and density of sintered materials were determined and the effect of sintering pressure changing to this parameters value was investigated. The preceramic paper is a composite material including a matrix of organic cellulose fibers and inorganic powder filler (SiC). The sintering temperature and pressure were 2373 K and 20-40 MPa, respectively. The holding time for the sintering process was 10 min. The density of sintered materials was investigated by the hydrostatic weighing method. In this work, we present a new iSIMPLE concept (infusion Self-powered Imbibing Microfluidic Pump by Liquid Encapsulation), which requires no external power for activation nor liquid manipulation, it is easy to use while its fabrication method is extremely simple, inexpensive and suited for mass replication. The pump consists of a working liquid, which is - after finger activation - absorbed in a porous material (e.g. filter paper). The air expelled from the porous material increases the pressure in the downstream outlet channel and propels the outlet liquid (i.e. the sample) through the channel or ejects it. Here we investigated the influence of different filter papers on the iSIMPLE flow rates, achieving a wide range from 30 down to 0.07 μL/min. We also demonstrated the versatility of the iSIMPLE in terms of the liquid volume that can be manipulated (from 0.5 μL up to 150 μL) and the working pressure reaching 64 kPa, unprecedented high for a self-powered microfluidics pump. In addition, using a 34 G microneedle mounted on the iSIMPLE, we successfully injected liquids with different viscosities (from 0.93 up to 55.88 cP) both into an agarose matrix and a skin-like biological ex vivo substrate (i.e. chicken breast tissue). This work validated the compatibility of the iSIMPLE with drug delivery in a controlled way into a skin-like matrix, envisioning a whole new scenario for intradermal injections using self-contained skin patch. In forensics, bloodstains on dark fabrics might be invisible for the naked eye. Although several visualization, presumptive, and confirmatory blood tests have been developed, all have one or more disadvantages, especially on DNA analysis. We report here the use of a visualization assay that can visually detect blood drops up to 1/20 dilution. In this assay, the fabric is placed between two wet filter papers and covered by glass surfaces on both sides. Pressure is applied on the glass surfaces in which bloodstains transfer onto the filter papers through capillary forces. Detected stains can be tested with other more sensitive presumptive blood tests performed on the filter paper. Even more, DNA analysis can be performed on the transferred bloodstains. The presented visualization assay is easy to perform, extremely cheap, requires little hands on time, and does not affect bloodstain pattern analysis.

Pressure sensors should have an excellent sensitivity in the range of 0–20 kPa when applied in wearable applications. Traditional pressure sensors cannot achieve both a high sensitivity and a large working range simultaneously, which results in their limited applications in wearable fields. There is an urgent need to develop a pressure sensor to make a breakthrough in both sensitivity and working range. In this paper, a graphene-paper pressure sensor that shows excellent performance in the range of 0–20 kPa is proposed. Compared to most reported graphene pressure sensors, this work realizes the optimization of sensitivity and working range, which is especially suitable for wearable applications. We also demonstrate that the pressure sensor can be applied in pulse detection, respiratory detection, voice recognition, as well as various intense motion detections. This graphene-paper pressure sensor will have great potentials for smart wearable devices to achieve health monitoring and motion detection.

Economic feasibility of steam explosion pretreatment for improvement of biogas production from wheat straw and paper tube residuals was investigated. The process was simulated by Aspen plus ®, and the economical feasibility of five different plant capacities was studied by Aspen Process Economic Analyzer. Total project investment of a plant using paper tube residuals or wheat straw was 63.9 or 61.8 million Euros, respectively. The manufacturing cost of raw biogas for these two feedstocks was calculated to 0.36 or 0.48 €/m(3) of methane, respectively. Applying steam explosion pretreatment resulted in 13% higher total capital investment while significantly improved the economy of the biogas plant and decreased the manufacturing cost of methane by 36%. The sensitivity analysis showed that 5% improvement in the methane yield and 20% decrease in the raw material price resulted in 5.5% and 8% decrease in the manufacturing cost of methane, respectively.

Wood shortages, environmental pollution and high energy consumption remain major obstacles hindering the development of today’s pulp and paper industry. Energy-saving and environmental friendly pulping processes are still needed, especially for non-woody materials. In this study, soda-oxygen pulping of bagasse was investigated and a successful soda-oxygen pulping process for bagasse at 100 °C was established. The pulping parameters of choice were under active alkali charge of 23%, maximum cooking temperature 100 °C, time hold at maximum temperature 180 min, initial pressure of oxygen 0.6 MPa, MgSO4 charge 0.5%, and de-pithed bagasse consistency 12%. Properties of the resultant pulp were screened yield 60.9%, Kappa number 14, viscosity 766 dm3/kg, and brightness 63.7% ISO. Similar pulps were also obtained at 110 °C or 105 °C with a cooking time of 90 min. Compared with pulps obtained at higher temperatures (115–125 °C), this pulp had higher screened yield, brightness, and acceptable viscosity, while the delignification degree was moderate. These results indicated that soda-oxygen pulping at 100 °C, the lowest cooking temperature reported so far for soda-oxygen pulping, is a suitable process for making chemical pulp from bagasse. Pulping at lower temperature and using oxygen make it an environmental friendly and energy-saving pulping process.

A sensitive and fast-responding membrane-free amperometric gas sensor is described, consisting of a small filter paper foil soaked with a room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL), upon which three electrodes are screen printed with carbon ink, using a suitable mask. It takes advantage of the high electrical conductivity and negligible vapour pressure of RTILs as well as their easy immobilization into a porous and inexpensive supporting material such as paper. Moreover, thanks to a careful control of the preparation procedure, a very close contact between the RTIL and electrode material can be achieved so as to allow gaseous analytes to undergo charge transfer just as soon as they reach the three-phase sites where the electrode material, paper supported RTIL and gas phase meet. Thus, the adverse effect on recorded currents of slow steps such as analyte diffusion and dissolution in a solvent is avoided. To evaluate the performance of this device, it was used as a wall-jet amperometric detector for flow injection analysis of 1-butanethiol vapours, adopted as the model gaseous analyte, present in headspace samples in equilibrium with aqueous solutions at controlled concentrations. With this purpose, the RTIL soaked paper electrochemical detector (RTIL-PED) was assembled by using 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide as the wicking RTIL and printing the working electrode with carbon ink doped with cobalt(ii) phthalocyanine, to profit from its ability to electrocatalyze thiol oxidation. The results obtained were quite satisfactory (detection limit: 0.5 ?M; dynamic range: 2-200 ?M, both referring to solution concentrations; correlation coefficient: 0.998; repeatability: ±7% RSD; long-term stability: 9%), thus suggesting the possible use of this device for manifold applications. © 2012 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Secondary pulp/paper-mill sludge (SPP) and sewage sludges (primary, secondary, and digested sewage sludges) were treated in supercritical water at temperatures ranging between 400 degrees Celsius and 550 degrees Celsius over 20-120 min for energy recovery. Low temperature and short reaction time favored the formation of heavy oil (HO) products, which were mainly composed of a variety of phenol and phenolic compounds, as well as some nitrogen-containing compounds, long-chain alkenes and alcohols, etc., with high gross calorific values (>36 MJ/kg). By contrast, the formation of synthetic gases, a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, and other light hydrocarbons, were not significantly affected by reaction time but greatly enhanced with increasing temperature. The highest gas yield was obtained at 550 degrees Celsius, where 37.7 wt.% of the SPP (on dry basis) was converted into gases, with hydrogen yields as high as 14.5 mol H(2)/kg SPP (on a dry basis). In comparison to sewage sludges, SPP exhibited a greater capability for the production of HO and gases owing to its higher contents of volatiles and alkali metals, indicating a prospective utilization potential for SPP as a source of bio-energy.

Different operating conditions ( viz . pulp consistency, oxygen pressure and treatment time) in the biobleaching of eucalyptus kraft pulp with the laccase–HBT system was tested in order to describe their effect and normalize a biobleaching protocol. A high O 2 pressure (0.6 MPa) was found to result in improved laccase-assisted delignification of the pulp. Also, a high pulp consistency (10%) and a short treatment time (2 h) proved the best choices with a view to obtaining good pulp properties (kappa number and ISO brightness) under essentially mild conditions. The laccase–HBT treatment was found to result in slight delignification (in the form of a 20–27% decrease in kappa number); however, an alkaline extraction stage raised delignification to 41–45%, a much higher level than those obtained in the control tests (16–23%). Also, the use of hydrogen peroxide in the extraction stage resulted in improved brightness (14–19%), but in scarcely improved delignification (4–7%). Treating the pulp with the laccase–HBT system reduced the amount of hydrogen peroxide required for subsequent alkaline bleaching by a factor of 3–4 relative to control tests.

The potential of a laccase mediator system on the delignification of Eucalyptus globulus kraft pulp was investigated under diverse operating conditions. A series of enzymatic treatments were performed to determine how biodelignification is influenced by pulp consistency, oxygen pressure, reaction time, dose of laccase, and dose of mediator. The mediator used was violuric acid. The results revealed that the extent of biodelignification remains practically constant between 1% and 2.5% of pulp consistency then decreases. However, its effect is less pronounced than the mediator or laccase charge. In fact, an increase in the mediator charge from 1% to 4% leads to an increase in the extent of delignification (fixed laccase charge = 20 IU/g and reaction time 120 min) from 28.4% to 52.2%. On the other hand, at a mediator charge of 4%, the increase of laccase charge from 10 to 40 IU/g has a similar impact on delignification. As for oxygen pressure, the extent of delignification increases with oxygen pressure, from 38.9% to 48.6%, when air and pure oxygen at 4 bar gauge are used. From the standpoint of reaction time, delignification is characterized by a very fast phase followed by a much slower one, leading to a plateau.

This paper proposes a new disposable soft 3D force sensor that can be used to calculate either force or displacement and vibrations. It uses three Hall Effect sensors orthogonally placed around a cylindrical beam made of silicon rubber. A niobium permanent magnet is inside the silicon. When a force is applied to the end of the cylinder, it is compressed and bent to the opposite side of the force displacing the magnet. This displacement causes change in the magnetic flux around the ratiomatric linear sensors (Hall Effect sensors). By analysing these changes, we calculate the force or displacement in three directions using a lookup table. This sensor can be used in minimal invasive surgery and haptic feedback applications. The cheap construction, bio-compatibility and ease of miniaturization are few advantages of this sensor. The sensor design, and its characterization are presented in this work.

The integration of paper with an electrochemical device has attracted growing attention for point-of-care testing, where it is of great importance to fabricate electrodes on paper in a low-cost, easy and versatile way. In this work, we report a simple strategy for directly writing electrodes on paper using a pressure-assisted ball pen to form a paper-based electrochemical device (PED). This method is demonstrated to be capable of fabricating electrodes on paper with good electrical conductivity and electrochemical performance, holding great potential to be employed in point-of-care applications, such as in human health diagnostics and food safety detection. As examples, the PEDs fabricated using the developed method are applied for detection of glucose in artificial urine and melamine in sample solutions. Furthermore, our developed strategy is also extended to fabricate PEDs with multi-electrode arrays and write electrodes on non-planar surfaces (e.g., paper cup, human skin), indicating the potential application of our method in other fields, such as fabricating biosensors, paper electronics etc.

This study characterizes the combustion of paper and sewage sludge in a pilot-scale fluidized bed. The highest temperature during combustion within the system was found at the surface of the fluidized bed. Paper sludge containing roughly 59.8% water was burned without auxiliary fuel, but auxiliary fuel was required to incinerate the sewage sludge, which contained about 79.3% water. The stability of operation was monitored based on the average pressure and the standard deviation of pressure fluctuations. The average pressure at the surface of the fluidized bed decreased as the sludge feed rate increased. However, the standard deviation of pressure fluctuations increased as the sludge feed rate increased. Finally, carbon monoxide (CO) emissions decreased as oxygen content increased in the flue gas, and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions were also tied with oxygen content.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of a brain tissue oxygen (P ti o 2 ) guided treatment in patients with traumatic brain injury. Methods: P ti o 2 was monitored in 93 patients with severe traumatic brain injury. Forty patients admitted from 1993 to 1996 were treated with intracranial pressure/cerebral perfusion pressure (ICP/CPP) management alone (ICP 70 mm Hg). Fifty three patients admitted from 1997 to 2000 were treated using ICP/CPP management, but in this second group CPP was also increased as individually required to raise the P ti o 2 above 1.33 kPa (10 mm Hg) (P ti o 2 guided group). Results: Cerebral hypoxic phases with P ti o 2 values below 1.33 kPa occurred significantly less often in the P ti o 2 guided group. P ti o 2 values were higher over the whole monitoring period. No statistical differences could be observed in outcome at six months, despite a positive trend in the P ti o 2 guided group. Conclusions: Cerebral hypoxic events can be reduced significantly by increasing cerebral perfusion pressure as required. To show a clear beneficial effect of P ti o 2 guided cerebral perfusion pressure management on outcome, a multicentre randomised trial needs to be undertaken.

A hybrid technique incorporating a wet oxidation stage and secondary fermentation step was used to process Pinus radiata pulp mill effluent sludge. The effect of hydrothermal oxidation at high temperature and pressure on the hydrolysis of constituents of the waste stream was studied. Biochemical acidogenic potential assays were conducted to assess acid production resulting from anaerobic hydrolysis of the wet oxidised hydrolysate under acidogenic conditions. Significant degradation of the lignin, hemicellulose, suspended solids, carbohydrates and extractives were observed with wet oxidation. In contrast, cellulose showed resistance to degradation under the experimental conditions. Extensive degradation of biologically inhibitory compounds by wet oxidation did not show a beneficial impact on the acidogenic or methanogenic potential compared to untreated samples.

PURPOSE To compare the relative gentleness of a silicone tape to a paper tape in healthy infants and children. DESIGN A randomized, grader-blinded, comparative study. SUBJECTS AND SETTING The sample group comprised 24 healthy infants and children 9.1 to 46.7 months of age (mean ± SEM, 34.0 ± 2.21). The study was conducted at a dermatological research facility (cyberDERM, Inc) located in Broomall, Pennsylvania. All volunteers were recruited from the surrounding community. METHODS Tapes measuring 1 × 1.5 inches were randomly applied to the left and right intrascapular regions of the upper back. Tapes were removed in a standardized fashion after 24 hours. The primary study outcome, gentleness, was based on visual assessments of skin damage, discomfort, and quantification of keratin removal. Four-point scales were used to assess skin damage, and a 10-point Faces, Legs, Activity, Cry, and Consolability instrument was used to assess discomfort. Secondary assessments included hair removal, tape edge-lift assessments, and parent preference for either tape. RESULTS There was a significantly lower mean ± SEM erythema response for the silicone tape (0.93 ± 0.14 vs 1.35 ± 0.11, P = .0129) than for the paper tape. No measurable epidermal stripping occurred with the silicone tape compared to a mean ± SEM response of 0.29 ± 0.11 for the paper tape (P = .0039). Discomfort was significantly lower (P = .0002) for the silicone tape as compared to the paper tape (Faces, Legs, Activity, Cry, and Consolability score mean difference from baseline 0.5 vs 3.3, P = .0002). Keratin removal was significantly less with the silicone as compared to paper tape (8.7 ± 0.5 μg/mL vs 15.2 ± 1.3 μg/mL, P < .0001). Few hairs were removed with either tape. There was significantly less (P < .0001) edge-lift with the paper tape than the silicone tape; no statistically significant differences in parent preferences for silicone versus paper tapes were measured (P = .3359). CONCLUSIONS Gentleness assessments favored the silicone tape compared to a paper tape and warrant further clinical investigation in the neonatal intensive care unit.

The novel technique is used to measure the pressure profile of a thin viscous film (i.e. coating suspension) in the nip between a soft viscoelastic roll and a smooth metal rod. We have studied the influence of the components, the solids content and the viscosity of the coating suspension on the measured nip pressure profile during different process conditions.

In order to remove wood extractive compounds from pulp mill sludge and thereby enhancing anaerobic digestibility, samples were subjected to either oxidative hydrothermal treatment (wet oxidation) or non-oxidative hydrothermal treatment (thermal hydrolysis). Treatments were carried out at 220 °C with initial pressure of 20 bar. More than 90% destruction of extractive compounds was observed after 20 min of wet oxidation. Wet oxidation eliminated 95.7% of phenolics, 98.6% fatty acids, 99.8% resin acids and 100% of phytosterols in 120 min. Acetic acid concentration increased by approximately 2 g/l after 120 min of wet oxidation. This has potential for rendering sludge more amenable to anaerobic digestion. In contrast thermal hydrolysis was found to be ineffective in degrading extractive compounds. Wet oxidation is considered to be an effective process for removal of recalcitrant and inhibitive compounds through hydrothermal pre-treatment of pulp mill sludge.

The exponentially decaying acoustic pressure of scattered surface acoustic waves (SAWs) at the contact line of a liquid film pinned to filter paper is shown to sustain a high curvature conic tip with micron-sized modulations whose dimension grows exponentially from the tip. The large negative capillary pressure in the film, necessary for offsetting the large positive acoustic pressure at the contact line, also creates significant negative hydrodynamic pressure and robust wicking action through the paper. An asymptotic analysis of this intricate pressure matching between the quasistatic conic film and bulk drop shows that the necessary SAW power to pump liquid from the filter paper and aerosolize, expressed in terms of the acoustic pressure scaled by the drop capillary pressure, grows exponentially with respect to twice the acoustic decay constant multiplied by the drop length, with a universal preexponential coefficient. Global rapid aerosolization occurs at a SAW power twice as high, beyond which the wicking rate saturates.

This paper describes the fabrication of pressure-driven, open-channel microfluidic systems with lateral dimensions of 45-300 microns carved in omniphobic paper using a craft-cutting tool. Vapor phase silanization with a fluorinated alkyltrichlorosilane renders paper omniphobic, but preserves its high gas permeability and mechanical properties. When sealed with tape, the carved channels form conduits capable of guiding liquid transport in the low-Reynolds number regime (i.e. laminar flow). These devices are compatible with complex fluids such as droplets of water in oil. The combination of omniphobic paper and a craft cutter enables the development of new types of valves and switches, such as "fold valves" and "porous switches," which provide new methods to control fluid flow.

Different cellulose pulps were produced from sulfur-free chemical treatments of Empty Palm Fruit Bunch Fibers (EPFBF), a by-product from palm oil processing. The pulps were microfluidized for deconstruction into nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and nanopaper was manufactured by using an overpressure device. The morphological and structural features of the obtained NFCs were characterized via atomic force and scanning electron microscopies. The physical properties as well as the interactions with water of sheets from three different pulps were compared with those of nanopaper obtained from the corresponding NFC. Distinctive chemical and morphological characteristics and ensuing nanopaper properties were generated by the EPFBF fibers. The NFC grades obtained compared favorably with associated materials typically produced from bleached wood fibers. Lower water absorption, higher tensile strengths (107–137 MPa) and elastic modulus (12–18 GPa) were measured, which opens the possibility for valorization of such widely available bioresource.

Cellulosic wastes, from sources such as low-quality cardboard and paper, are regarded as potential feedstocks for bioethanol production. One pathway from these cellulosic materials to ethanol is saccharification (hydrolysis) followed by fermentation. Saccharification is commonly performed using enzymes that are able to cleave the cellulosic structure to smaller units, preferably to glucose monomers. During the hydrolysis, mixing conditions have a considerable impact on the performance of the enzymes. Thus mixing conditions in the hydrolysis tank can also influence the downstream operations and, consequently, the overall economy of the bioethanol process. In this experimental study, four types of impeller, at different hydrolysis conditions were used. The effect of mixing on the glucose yield and on the filtration characteristics of the hydrolysate was evaluated. It was shown that not only the sugar yield depended on the mixing conditions: the effect on the solid–liquid separation step was even more significant. Post-print / Final draft

The red algae, Gelidium corneum, was used to produce bleached pulp for papermaking and ethanol. Aqueous extracts obtained at 100-140 °C were subjected to saccharification, purification, fermentation, and distillation to produce ethanol. The solid remnants were bleached with chlorine dioxide and peroxide to make pulp. In the extraction process, sulfuric acid and sodium thiosulfate were added to increase the extract yield and to improve de-polymerization of the extracts, as well as to generate high-quality pulp. An extraction process incorporating 5% sodium thiosulfate by dry weight of the algae provided optimal production conditions for the production of both strong pulp and a high ethanol yield. These results suggest that it might be possible to utilize algae instead of trees and starch for pulp and ethanol production, respectively.

The removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) from solid matrices has received considerable attention because of the environmental persistence, bioaccumulation, and potential toxicity of these compounds. This study presents a simple method using concentrated HNO(3) as a suppression agent, and methanol-modified supercritical carbon dioxide (Sc-CO(2)) extraction for removing PFOS and PFOA from solid matrices. The optimal conditions were 16 M HNO(3) and 20% (v/v) methanol containing Sc-CO(2), under a pressure of 20.3 MPa and a temperature of 50 °C. Extraction time was set at 70 min (40 min for static and 30 min for dynamic extraction). PFOA and PFOS were identified and quantitated by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. The extraction efficiencies (with double extractions) were close to 100% for PFOA and 80% for PFOS for both paper and fabric matrices. The extraction efficiencies for sand were approximately 77% for PFOA and 59% for PFOS. The results show that this method is accurate, and effective, and that it provides a promising and convenient approach to remediate the environment of hazardous PFOA and PFOS contamination.

This paper describes the results of laboratory experiments using a thermophilic aerobic MBR (TMBR) at 50 °C. An innovative use of submerged flat-sheet MBR modules to treat circuit wastewater from the paper industry was studied. Two experiments were conducted with a flux of 8–13 L/m 2 /h without chemical membrane cleaning. COD and BOD 5 elimination rates were 83% and 99%, respectively. Calcium was reduced from 110 to 180 mg/L in the inflow to 35–60 mg/L in the permeate. However, only negligible membrane scaling occurred. The observed sludge yield was very low and amounted to 0.07–0.29 g MLSS/g COD eliminated . Consequently, the nutrient supply of ammonia and phosphate can be lower compared to a mesophilic process. Molecular-biological FISH analysis revealed a likewise high diversity of microorganisms in the TMBR compared to the mesophilic sludge used for start-up. Furthermore, ammonia-oxidising bacteria were detected at thermophilic operation.
